how the Bishops handled revival
while originally they could handle their injuries as Bishops, the same cannot be said when they're "mortal" and without their crowns.
Shamura: initially unconscious upon arrival and heavily bleeding. It’s only thanks to the quick work of Kallamar (who was on his feet by then) and the healers that prevented them from dying again. Upon coming out of a fragile state they're agitated, confused and aggressive; lashing out and hurting anyone who came near them, even their own siblings. Only Witness Allocer and Kallamar handled them. Eventually they settled, which happened much quicker with Narinder by their side. On bad days they tend to lash out or have episodes similar to dementia. That's thankfully happening less and less as time goes on. Sewing and knitting calms them so that's their job.
Kallamar: woke up and was unable to stand up straight and walk properly due to the damage to his ears. Eventually he succumbed to illness due to having a weakened immune system (he always had a weak one before the Blue Crown chose him.) Saleos mostly took care of him with Narinder helping. He had to be taught sign language for days when there's a lot of noise (think festivals). [Sign language is taught to many of the cultists. they may be a cult but they ARE inclusive!] Mostly avoids Narinder and tries not to catch Lamb's eye. Lives with Saleos (he was the youngest of Kallamar's disciples so he out lived Haborym and Baalzebub.) Will fall sick easily when there's sickness around, so as a healer he focuses his expertise on common colds (which he has an easier time shaking off) and physical injuries.
Heket: was choking on her blood when she awoke, would have died from blood loss had the healers not stepped in quick enough. Because of her ripped throat Heket was unable to eat food for several days, which was agony for her. All she could 'eat' was the water and thin broth the healers dripped into her mouth. Narinder and Leshy stayed by her side as she slowly recovered. Struggles to talk due to physical trauma so she had to be taught sign language to speak. She's a decent cook.
Leshy: was bleeding from his eyes but wasn't in any danger of dying. Was a pain in the ass for the healers however, he didn't make things easier with his wriggling and cursing. Once the pain eased, however, he calmed down and took his current situation well. It helped that Narinder kept him company. Occasionally uses a cane when there's crowds, more structures built, etc. Other than that he can get around just fine using the vibrations in the earth to help guide him. Is a farmer but does bartend on occasion.
TL;DR-
Shamura: where am I? i'm scared i'm angry i'm going to rip someone's arm off if they come near me where is my cat
Kallamar: oh my god i've been puking for five days straight and my head feels like it's spinning
Heket: (sad dying frog noises as her stomach growls)
Leshy: y'know I kinda like it here.

A COLLECTION OF OVERLY DETAILED HEADCANONS ABOUT CRITTERS AS A SPECIES!
(Ahead is a wall of text! If you're prepared to read a bunch of non canon bullshit I made up to explain things that don't need explained you may proceed. If not, I would avoid clicking keep reading. Because I perhaps went a little overboard.)
General Lore:
Critters are a species of human originally created from U.S government funded human experimentation during WWII. Inspired by the extremes of the animal kingdom, the government hoped to make hyperdurable supersoldiers. Mostly unsuccessful, the main thing that sets critters apart from humans is appearance and wildly unstable genetics.
After years some of the subjects escaped and thanks to their various unusual methods of reproduction their population boomed fast enough that the world could hardly keep up. Generations later and critters are a widely abundant globally. Such abundance has allowed for them to integrate into society. However, not without difficulty. Food shortages in lower income states and social pushback has led many into bad living situations.
Physiology:
High genetic variation leads to a wide variety of critters, each with advantages and, more commonly, disadvantages.
For example; critters with proportionally larger eyes theoretically would have better eyesight. However, problems with eye dilation and distortion of eye shape leads them to more commonly have bad eyesight, or eyesight which easily wanes with age and sun damage. This is compounded with their general vulnerability to injury as they protrude due to their skulls barely keeping up.
Critters are prone to gene mutation. Two critter parents are likely to pass on faulty genes as the genetic makeup of reproductive cells often gets messed up. Upon inception these genes will mutate due to their faulty genetic code, sometimes leading to kids who looks drastically different than either parent. Even if this is not the case the faulty genes still create problems for the reproductive cells of the child as they grow, continuing to be changed and passed on.
Physical:
These mutations also lead to structural deformities. Strange growths and bone shapes aren't uncommon most commonly occurring on the skull, but can manifest as extra/less limbs unusual heights, strange spine deformations, fused/hyperflexible joints and bones presenting as cartilaginous or membranous.
Mutation of innards isn't all too uncommon either; ranging from lifelong organ issues, to benign growths of veins and nerves, to a unhealthy buildup/atrophy of fat and muscle.
Unfortunately all this genetic instability can lead to high rates of cancer, infertility, dementia, and mortality rates in infants
A few mutations are universal to most critters, most common is lack of visible nostrils and ears. Don't let appearances fool you however, they do still have functional noses and ears. Nostrils by default being closed shut by default can be opened and closed with adequate muscle control or significant air pressures. Ears meanwhile covered in a thin sensitive layer of skin allowing them to hear just as well, but with less directionality and mild trouble with environmental and internal pressure changes.
A critters epidermis has a wide variety of textures, colors, and hair lengths. Some of the texture of normal skin, some are velvety, some are fuzzy, some are scaly, some are smooth, some have hardened keratinous patches, and when exposed to cold enough climates for long periods of time, some can even develop a whole body coat of fur.
Phycological:
The high genetic variation also effects the brains of individuals. Critters are more likely to be diagnosed with mental disorders and learning disabilities of all sorts. They also tend to be highly emotional.
Interestingly as they develop their brains tend to latch on to specific emotions making them more likely to perform certain behaviors or feel a specific way. Individuals who ended up latching on to particularly negative emotions can lead rough lives as they find it difficult to feel any other way without active effort.
Despite this they aren't unable to feel other emotions if something to trigger another emotion occurs. In a sense the emotion they latch onto is more like a default then a solid state of mind.
Reproduction and development:
Critters can be seen with no reproductive organs, no visible reproductive organs, normal humanoid reproductive organs, both sexes of reproductive organs or reproductive organs not commonly found in mammals
Along with normal reproduction critters can reproduce with other means depending on the individual. This includes, but is not limited to: Parthenogenesis, external fertilization, vegetative propagation, budding and fragmentation. They can also have multiple ways to conceave and incubate the offspring. Live offspring, eggs and external fetuses, as seen in fragmentation and vegetative propagation are just some of the more common methods.
Development in critters is also highly varied depending on conception. While some are born through live birth. Some go through larval stages of sorts as they develop, some molt and spin cacoons as caterpillars would, some are closer to amphibians in that they smoothly develop as they grow, and some are raised in an almost plant-like fashion in which the fetus is placed in a sealed environment and fed nutritiants from external sources until they are developed enough to support themselves. On the whole a critter usually fully finishes their development by their early 20s
Many critters can reproduce multiple ways at the same time, leading to extremely high birthrates particularly with individuals who spawn externally. Despite high mortality rates the access to modern medical practices/technologies leads to higher survival rates than normal, offsetting the losses enough to where critters are still in the process of exponentially exploding in population.
SOCIOLOGY:
Critter populations are most dense on the North American continent where in the largest cities they can match human populations 1:1. Outside of North America, critters can also be found in relative abundance in other countries where they are better tolerated.
Due to a large chunk of their population having a rapid reproductive rate, It's speculated they will continue exponentially increasing their population until they will overtake human populations worldwide within a couple of centuries. That is assuming social pushback, laws, or lack of resources won't get involved.
Their sudden boom in population on a societal scale while surprisingly well accepted in their country of origin, worldwide they are less integrated into society and less accepted.
Those on the North American continent, particularly the U.S, are treated as any other person particularly by those in higher density areas who have lived with them longer. Classified as legal citizens they are entitled to the given benefits and privileges this brings. This is not without flaw however. Prejudice still exists, biases and income inequality are sadly common.
Interestingly due to a lack of visible sexual organs on some, it has become socially acceptable for said critters to wear minimal clothes. It is still preferable to wear at least some article of clothing, so most of the time you will see these individuals wearing an accessory or just a shirt/pants

disclaimer: this has already been posted on ao3 and quotev, i'm just reposting this beach episode special as a promo for the fic. after this is all my previous author notes.
this is a fem!reader and also a half chinese!reader insert.
previous ♡ next
The rest of the dinner had consisted of the group finding more and more extreme ways to remove Lilia's 'dessert' off of their plates. Malleus and Silver, experts at this craft, had simply casted spells under the table to remove spoonfuls of the 'cake' every so often while Lilia's eyes were elsewhere. Ortho helped Idia by blasting the 'food' with micro beams of technomatic energy to give off the illusion of Idia slowly eating it. Trey simply casted his unique magic and enjoyed the dessert wholeheartedly, nevermind the fact that it tasted distinctly like candied violets and not like a red velvet cake.
You absentmindedly spinned the dainty silver spoon in your hand as you debated the merits of merely excusing yourself from dinner with 'monthly problems' as the root cause. On one hand, there'd be no need to eat the most poisonous creation you'd ever seen. On the other, having a bunch of awkward eye contact and boys trying to 'help' with offerings of chocolate and the like was not on your agenda for this vacation. You continued to spin your cutlery as you watched Trey take pity on Riddle and Cater enough to help them out, just as Jamil finished faking his test for poison and proclaimed the dessert contained a certain food dye additive that Kalim was totally allergic too. And in fealty to his master, Jamil too would not partake in the cake.
Vil and Rook already had the excuse of watching their figures to avoid partaking in dessert, an excuse that Lilia took at face value, promising to use less oil to reduce trans fat next time he makes a cake. The question, of course, was how much oil was Lilia putting in his cakes before? From a glance at Silver's face, way too much. It does explain the yellow liquid with suspended droplets of red that flowed out of the moist yet dry mass in front of you.
Leona had already conked out, declaring that he only eats meat and will never partake in a food that contains 'herbivore products' whatever that meant. Ruggie, meanwhile, was eating the food with gusto, gladly eating Leona's portion as well. You could guess why, starvation had a knack for making one distinctly more appreciative of food. Even if Lilia's cooking was barely edible, Ruggie would still eat and enjoy it. Tragic, was it not?
Floyd and Jade had started moving their food to Azul's plate, letting the oblivious housewarden magic away their food as well as his own. From the frustrated look on Azul's face, you could guess he hadn't figured out the ruse to the game just yet.
Lilia flourished in all of you 'enjoying' his food, flushed with pride as he described the painstaking process of making the cake. "At first," he said, "I added two drops of the food colouring. But then, I realised, it was never gonna be a 'red velvet cake' without more red! So I dumped the whole bottle in." Lilia puffed his chest out, awaiting praise for correcting this foolhardy decision.
"T-that's lovely." Silver said weakly in reply. "I'm glad you corrected your mistake early on."
"And Trey didn't say a word, that sly devil." Lilia continued, wagging his finger teasingly at his cooking partner. "You were waiting for me to learn it myself, were you not?"
Trey nodded with a smile and a twitching eye. "Yep, I figured you'd realise it eventually."
Lilia guffawed at that. "I'm glad you have such respect for your elders, boy, but next time you should keep in mind that my memory is not as pristine as your own."
Lilia really needs to stop saying such mysterious things. Even if Fae age slower than humans, shouldn't he act more his 'mental age' than his physical one? Though... with his cooking I'd gladly accept dementia as its excuse.
You sighed quietly, as you decided to take the path of least resistance. You used your food to push the pile of ashes around your plate, giving an illusion of eating it. It seemed less like you weren't eating the food at all, merely picking at it slowly due to a lack of appetite. It really was too bad that Lilia wasn't a better cook.
Soon enough, the conversation petered out and you stood to dump the 'rest of' your dessert in the food waste bin. Lilia never noticed, not with his distraction and the purposeful silence of your movements. As you went to wash your dishes in the sink, more and more of the boys filed in, all having made deals or negotiations for one to do their dishes for the night.
The suds and the hot water that ran over your skin was familiar as you quickly cleaned up, casting a quick spell under your breath to dry off the dishes and put them away. As you turned around, you smiled at Ruggie and Jamil, the two of them rapidly scrubbing through the plates at a practiced pace. Not too slow to be noticed, but slow enough to get away with just a few moments to themselves. But your attention was taken away by the dark sky, signaling it was about time for you to take some time to yourself. You wanted the opportunity to check up and fix up your wards, with Idia's presence, they were likely weakened a little.
It was a habit by this point, constantly keeping an eye or two on the wards around your room. The incident was ingrained in your head, to the point where even a day where you didn't check up on them caused this debilitating feeling of fear. Another intruder in your room was something you hoped to never happen again.
(You were resigned, of course, to the truth of the matter. That it would continue to happen for as long as you were alive. This bloodline that you were born into came cursed with the constant threat of assassins, or worse. For all you could act trusting of your friends, you were never sure when, exactly, they'd come to sell you out. You just hoped it wasn't soon. Hoped to be able to enjoy this illusion of camaraderie for a little while longer.)
You quietly walked up the steps to your room, the group already dispersing amongst themselves into groups of each dorm. A distinct feeling of loneliness overcame you as you watched them separate, yet were never alone. What you would give to have that easy friendship.
There was a knock on your door at 9 o'clock in the evening, just as you were finishing up with warding your room once more.
"Who is it?" You called out, a pleasant lilt to your voice as you awaited an answer from behind the door. A quick brushstroke to finish off the character for 'warning' and you should be done for the day.
"it's Trey." A familiar voice replied.
"And Cater!" Another chimed in. "We were wondering if you wanted to play a board game with the rest of us? Apparently Jade brought monopoly with him."
"Oh, sure, I'd love to play." You stood up from your desk and made way to the door, snagging your magic pen as you opened it up. "Shall we go downstairs, then?"
"Of course!" Cater perked up and dashed down immediately.
Trey smiled softly at you and offered an arm. "My lady." He said with a chuckle and a teasing look in his eye.
You giggled in reply. "How chivalrous." You took the proffered arm and walked downstairs with him at a more sedentary pace.
"We don't have enough pieces for all of us." Jade sighed with a faked look of regret on his face, before his ever-present smile snapped back on. "It seems like we'll have to be in teams, perhaps teams of four?"
"There's eighteen of us," Riddle noted, "so teams of three would be the perfect number."
The smile on Jade's face froze over, though he continued his pleasant countenance. "Of course. I guess the dorms will be splitting up then."
"I think the dorms with three members already work out." Jamil spoke up, "So some of the groups of two will be splitting up instead."
"Rook and I claim (Y/N)." Vil said from his seat on the sofa. "Any objections?"
The glares he got from Leona and Jade were harsh enough to kill, yet they said no word in reply. Always happy to hang out with the pomefiore students, you sat sandwiched between Vil and Rook when the two shifted to make room.
"I can team up with Ruggie and Leona!" Kalim exclaimed from where he was seated, ecstatic grin on his face. "This is gonna be super fun!"
"It'd be even better with a feast..." Ruggie sighed to himself, a glint of sardonic humour in his eye.
Kalim perked up even more. "That's a great idea. Next time we have a board game night, we should make it a feast!"
Jamil sighed. "There's no way I'm making that much food for that many people in such short time Kalim."
"Great! Then I can help out!" He beamed.
"And I could as well." Lilia chimed in with a smile.
A shudder ran through the group.
"Ah... sorry Lilia..." Kalim started, "but you don't know any dishes from Scalding Sands... so..."
"I prefer to cook alone." Jamil interjected.
Lilia drooped down with a frown. "That's too bad, then."
A clap of his hands brought all eyes to Jade. "Now that the teams are sorted, shall we start choosing our pieces?"
"Oh-oh, dibs on the money bag!" Kalim moved to grab the metal piece when Ruggie revealed it in his hand with a familiar laugh. "Good job, Ruggie!" He patted the hyena beastman on the head before moving to sit back down on the floor at the feet of his team.
"Can we have the dog?" You asked politely from your place on the sofa. Jade wordlessly passed it to you, gaining a grateful smile. You turned to your teammates, wondering quietly: "Are there any strategies for monopoly?"
"Buy everything you land on and get good roles." Vil intoned. "So we should have Rook roll, since he has the best luck of all of us."
"Ah, you flatter me dear Roi du Poison." Rook said with a hand to his chest. "I'd be glad to handle the heavy work for our team. I wouldn't want to see any calluses on either of your soft hands."
Bit weird to say but I appreciate the sentiment.
"And you will handle the money." Vil looked at you. "I'll handle the talking and negotiating. If any auctions come up, I'll bet too. Got it?"
"Roger that!"
"Of course, beautiful Vil."
"Good." He leaned forwards, a competitive gleam to his eyes, "Then shall we win this game?"
"Wait- how does one even play monopoly?" Malleus wondered from his place on the couch.
Trey sighed. "This is gonna be a long night."
"A one." Lilia sighed as he moved the top hat onto another owned property. "How much do we owe you, Azul?"
Azul cackled. "Why, not too much, only 500 dollars!"
Malleus begrudgingly handed over the note to Floyd as the Octavinelle students laughed at their growing pile of money.
"This is unfair." Riddle spoke up from where his team had been sent to the floor, where 'the bankrupt should sit, so we know they're out of the game'. "Of course the board game club members will be the winning teams. We should play a better game."
"Aww, is goldfishie upset about losing so quickly?" Floyd teased with a shark-like grin. "That's too bad... maybe if you had longer arms you'd be able to make better rolls!"
Riddle slowly went red. "Is that. Another. Short joke, Floyd?" He gritted out as Trey and Cater started to coach him into calming down. Riddle only got a laugh in reply, further fanning the flames of his anger.
"We got a two and a one." Ruggie spoke up from the 'Jail' sofa. "Guess we're stuck in here for another turn."
"Good job Ruggie." Leona grinned, "We're out of the madhouse for a little longer."
"Let me out!" Kalim wailed from besides them. "I swear I did nothing wrong! I'm innocent, I swear it!"
"Kalim, this is just a game. You're not actually in jail." Jamil spoke up from his couch, bored out of his mind when Idia and Ortho were doing all the work.
"We got a lucky three!" Rook spoke up from besides you. "We escape le Roi d'Effort's tyrannical reign once more, my dear Roi et Reine."
"Good job, Rook." Vil congratulated, "But we are not out of the woods just yet."
"We don't have enough funds to reliably survive another rent from Idia's group." You murmured worriedly to him as you handed the 'banker', Trey, enough money for another house to your pink set.
"Trust me, dear, when have I ever lead this team astray?" Vil arched a perfect brow and stroked his hand through your hair in a comforting manner, smirk on his face.
"Uh oh, Azul, we got a five!" Floyd said worriedly as he looked between the board and the dice.
"I'm aware, Floyd." Azul pinched the bridge of his nose as he calculated the prices. "Jade, how is our bank looking?"
"We still have plenty of funds, sir." He reported with a smile.
"You owe us 2000 dollars." Vil interrupted. "We just added a house there."
Jade paled. "The status is dire, Azul."
"Do we need to mortgage?"
"I'm afraid we will."
"Then do so."
A wide grin came to Idia's face as he looked over the board while the Octavinelle group struggled to pay yours. "We have this W in the bag, Ortho!" He paused for a moment, before a squeak. "And Jamil! We couldn't have done this without you!"
"I did nothing."
"Which is what we needed! If I was paired with Azul we would've lost by now... he's way too much of a control freak."
"I see." Jamil frowned in thought. "Thank you, then."
"...What was that Idia?" A threatening smile. "I hope you're prepared to face the consequences of what you've said..."
"My team is plenty prepared to beat yours. We're not the ones on the verge of bankruptcy after all." Jamil grinned, always pleased to go against Azul.
"And now you've even turned Jamil against me! We just cannot let this stand, right Jade and Floyd?" Azul turned to the tweels for support as he faked heartbreak from Jamil's cruel words.
"Nah. I'm bored." Floyd said, examining his nails before deciding to go back to teasing Riddle until he exploded again.
"LOL even your team doesn't want to help you!" Idia laughed, manic grin on his face. "Ortho, roll a five for us if you'd please."
"...It's a seven."
"Goddamnit."
It's been three hours since the group started playing monopoly, with no end in sight to the horrors off the game. For all you tried to end it, only one other group has gone bankrupt since.
"Finally, we're done for!" Ruggie sighed, relieved to be done with the game and to go to bed.
"Next time you should roll better." Leona glared. "We were this close to winning."
Ruggie looked at the other four groups still in the running and back to Leona, unimpressed.
"I think we did super well anyways! We weren't the first group out and that's all that matters!" Kalim piped in, trying to diffuse the tension.
"Eh, whatever." Leona yawned before going up the steps to his bedroom.
"Wh- Leona, aren't you gonna help clean our stuff up?" Ruggie yelled after him, and with the lack of reply, he groaned and went to pack the group's stuff up.
"I think I'll stay up." Kalim said to him. "I wanna see Jamil win!"
"Kalim... I doubt we're gonna be the winners at this rate." Jamil shook his head, the group funds of Ignihyde + Jamil and Octavinelle being significantly diminished since they declared war on each other.
"Shut up Jamil! We're gonna beat that stupid octopus into the ground, got it?!" Idia hissed, muttering calculations and win rates to Ortho as he surveryed the board with a manic look in his eyes.
Vil rolled his eyes. "This game will be way too long. Let's just-"
"NO FORFIETS ALLOWED!" Both Azul and Idia yelled at the same time, wanting to win 'fair and square', whatever that meant.
You tapped Vil on the shoulder and whispered a question to him. "Can I nap for a bit on your shoulder? I'm very much tired but... we can't exactly go to bed now." You shrugged with a weary smile.
"Whatever." He sighed in reply, and didn't say a word as you leant your head against his shoulder and with soft breaths as you drifted off to sleep.
You were still asleep when the game ended. Idia and Azul burnt each other out of the game, both throwing fits and arguing with each other as they went back to their rooms. Kalim, who had drifted off during the long game, was carried up to their shared room by Jamil with a groan off annoyance. Diasomnia somehow ended up winning despite the team only learning the rules a few hours ago.
Rook spoke up as Jade finished packing up the pieces. "Roi du Poison, I can always carry our dear Reine des Cygnes up the stairs if you'd rather go to sleep as soon as possible."
Vil shook his head. "It's fine, I can carry (Y/N) up myself." He merely glared at Rook when his vice housewarden gave a smug smile in reply. "Don't say a word."
"I won't!" He grinned.
"And don't look at me like that!"
"Like what?"
Vil didn't deign him with a reply and instead picked you up in a bridal carry to get to your room on the second floor. Worryingly, as he did so, you started to stir. His quiet and gentle movements didn't encourage you to go back to sleep, instead it merely woke you up as the two of you reached the top step.
You jolted in his arms. "I- Vil?!"
"What." He said flatly.
"Did you-" You spoke haltingly, tired and disoriented. "carry me up the stairs?"
Vil arched a brow. "Do you have a problem with that?"
You glanced away. "It's just that... you didn't have to go through the trouble, waking me up would suffice. I'm sorry for the bother."
"It was no bother at all." Vil's eyes pierced you as he continued to hold you up steadily. "If I wanted to wake you up, I would have done so. I don't mind doing this much for you." A rare smile graced his face as he looked upon you. "You are... precious to me, after all."
And with that, he set you down gently and walked down the stairs to his room, leaving you frozen in place. As you registered his words, a bright flush marked your cheeks. You hid your face behind your hands for a moment and sighed ever so quietly. Your heart thumped and a sea of butterflies flooded your stomach.
You wondered what that feeling was as you tucked yourself into bed for the night.
Mini Theatre Jade, packing a monopoly board in his luggage: I can't wait to be on a team with my three favorite people! I'd love to play monopoly with (Y/N)! Vil and Riddle: Allow us to introduce ourselves. Leona: I WANTED TO TEAM WITH HER DAMMIT NOW I'M WITH KALIM. Jamil: ...Finally... freedom...
and here is the sixth part of the beach ep. if you'd like to read the rest of the fic, you can read it on ao3 here, and on quotev here.

reasons to eat healthy that don't involve weight loss
for people who struggle to stay on track
·:*¨༺ ★ ༻¨*:·.
-to improve your relationship with food, including unhealthy food (the occasional treat will feel a lot better if you're not indulging all the time!)
-to avoid cycles of self hatred that come after periods of binging or unhealthy eating
-to practice self respect and giving yourself the love and pampering you deserve
-to avoid immediate health complications such as diabetes or heart diseases, some of which may run in your family
-to expand your cooking skills for yourself and potentially people you love and may want to cook (nutritious) food for
-to learn to love foods besides the junk food (loving fruits and veggies>>>)
-to save money (cooking at home can be a lot cheaper than buying snacks and treats all the time!)
-to avoid getting your body dependent on sugar, and the complications of that dependency (constantly craving sugar, getting withdrawal symptoms, health issues that may come from that)
-to develop healthy habits to keep you aging gracefully- if you want to be active and independent into old age and avoid serious health problems such as dementia, health is going to keep getting more important. it's easier to change sooner and set yourself up for a full and complete life.
-to help with any potential issues you may have with sleep, digestion, or energy levels

Fix these things or NOTHING in your life will EVER go right!!!
In 1943, American psychologist, Abraham Maslow proposed a hierarchy of needs in his paper "A Theory of Human Motivation" in the journal Psychological Review. It is a classification system intended to reflect the universal needs of society at large and as individuals. This is a great tool to use if you are struggling with gaining a sense of direction and deciding which aspect of your ascension needs more attention than another.
But anyway~
What I actually want to focus on is the most important needs on Maslow's Hierarchy, and those are the Physiological Needs.
"What are physiological needs?" you ask. Well, they are biological requirements for Human survival. Or rather, what you body needs so that you don't drop dead. A conclusive list of physiological needs is hard to find but we shall focus on four: food, water, sleep and air.
Food 🥗
Does the importance of sustenance need to be stated? Probably not, but here you go anyway. As one of the basic necessities of life, food contains nutrients, which are essential for the growth, repair, as well as maintenance of body tissues & for the regulation of vital processes. These nutrients provide your body the energy it NEEDS TO FUNCTION!!
So following a nutritious diet is a non-negotiable. 🙅♀️
Water💧
Apart from occasionally quenching your thirst and aiding in keeping you clean on a daily basis, water serve several vital roles regarding your bodily functions. It helps your body to maintain a normal temperature whether you ingest it or submerge yourself in it. (So swimming on a hot day will do you good). It lubricates & cushions joints for ease of movement, protects your spinal cord as well as other sensitive tissues, & removes of waste from the body through urination, perspiration, and bowel movements.
So are you convinced now? 🚰
Sleep 🛌
First of all, what is sleep? It's a normal bodily process wherein you body and brain rest in order to regain energy, promote growth & repair of the tissues. Major benefits of good sleep include the improvement of your brain performance, mood, & health. Studied have suggested that prolonged sleep deprivation have a greater impact on life expectancy than smoking. YIKES. Not getting enough quality sleep on a regular basis increases the risk of various diseases & disorders. These range from heart disease & stroke to obesity & dementia.
So get you rest ladies. 💤
Air 🌬
Air is arguably the most important component for the survival of life on Earth. We need air to breathe. The oxygen present in air is necessary for the respiration of living beings and the carbon dioxide present in air is important for the plants to go through the process of photosynthesis. Considering the importance of air for our mere survival, it is no surprise that poor air quality is severely detrimental to our health. It cause wheezing or difficulty breathing. Irritation and inflammation of the respiratory tract (coughing) Shortness of breath, especially during physical activity. Aggravation of existing asthma, heart and lung conditions.
So do your best to avoid poor air, and improve the air quality in you living and work spaces. 🧘♀️
Take care of yourself first. You can't pour from an empty cup.🍶💐

Little fic or headcannons of how much lian and roy are alike please and thank you
Oooooo imma do a fic! Someone mentioned this again and I’ve been thinking about it!
———————
When possible, the parents of Omega Squad like to get together for a ‘normal day’ with their kids. Well, as normal as their lives got. They rotated who hosted and who provided what food. Their kids enjoyed spending time with their parents….likely because some of them acted like they weren’t grown ass adults with teenage children.
“Is Jade on her way?” Linda asks Roy, swatting her husband’s hand away from the cake.
Roy nods, grinning at her phone, “Yeah, she is. Li’s been antsy all day about it. Not that she’d let me see it.”
Dick fakes a gasp, “A Harper avoiding showing their feelings? Say it isn’t so, Wallace!”
“I’m afraid it’s true, Richard.” Wally says solemnly, “When will they ever understand that being ‘too cool to care’ just keeps them apart from those who love them?”
“Hey, Bianca?” Roy calls to the beautiful woman chatting with Lois and Selina, “If I kill them, do you have to report it? Are you obligated to revive them or….?”
She glances at Dick and Wally, then back at Roy, “I’d revive one of them. Let the kids pick which one.”
Laughter fills the room as the teenagers get back from their ‘mission to the store. Several speedsters, two half aliens, plus growing teens means they need all the food they can get.
“Oh dear.” Jai sighs, “I think they finally lost it. I thought we had at least another week for Dad.”
“Don’t be an ass, dude,” Jon snorts, kissing his mother’s cheek as he carries most the grocery bags. “If anyone gets dementia first, it’ll be Bruce—“
More laughs and a faux glare from the Bat himself. Roy sees his daughter staring at him, “Yes, Lian Alice?”
“Ugh, you and Mom had to go with Alice for my middle name.” She rolls her eyes. “I sound like a Bridgerton character.”
“It’s a very respectable name for a little demon.” Roy says cheerfully, kissing her temple, “You can air your grievances to your mom in twenty minutes.”
To anyone who didn’t know her, the eye roll she gives her father would be disrespectful. But every adult in the room knows how anxious the topic of her mother is. It’s a simple way for her father to answer the question gnawing at her without her having to ask. Of course, her friends and boyfriend would never dare let her worry on it….even if she ‘doesn’t care’.
“Hey, Roja, did you ever try on that shirt I made?” Milagro asks, leaning against her father’s side on the couch.
“Aw fuck, I forgot, I’ll go try it on now.” She bats her eyes at Jai, teasing, “Any chance you want to help me change?”
“Jai Bartholomew,” Roy doesn’t turn back from where he’s putting the groceries away, “Make one move up those stairs and Irey becomes an only child.”
“I was going to say no, Uncle Roy, promise!” Not a single person believes the speedster with that mischievous look on his face. A few minutes after Lian disappears to her room, Roy notices how Dick and Wally look at him.
“What?”
“Oh, nothing. Just funny how you seem to forget where here shamelessness comes from. “If anyone else said that about his kid, Roy would kill them. But from Dick, he takes it as the teasing it is.
“Isn’t the point of parenthood making your kids better than you?”
Wally snorts at that, “Just yesterday you said ‘as long as she doesn’t do crack, murder is a cake walk.’”
“And I’ll die on that hill, thank you, Wallace.” Roy says, rolling his eyes. “Besides, I’m not shameless.”
“Right,” Dick nods, “Remind me how old Lian was when she said she knew you and Jaybird were together?”
“That depends, Uncle Dick,” Lian appears down the stairs, “How old I was when I told them? Or when I knew?”
The shirt she’d changed into is made of a sheer, deep red material. The sleeveless cut shows off her muscular back and arms. A black band of fabric hugs her breasts, a contrast against the exposed skin. Flip her long dark ponytail, Lian holds out her arms.
“I accept compliments but prefer cash.”
“Red really is your color,” Milagro says with a laugh, getting up to check the fit of the shirt. “Not too snug anywhere?”
“Not really, but if you want to check, my safe word is ‘French toast’.”
“Lian!” Roy meant to chide his daughter, but it came out as a laugh. How many times had he said the same thing to people in this room? Milagro does tug at the fabric, holding it at different lengths to see how they look. Several old scars poke out from the top, but most of them haven’t seen that burn in the center of her back before.
“What’s that, Chiquita?” Bianca asks, motioning at an old burn on her back.
“Hmm?” Lian looks over her shoulder, “Oh! Dad, isn’t that the brand from the human traffickers?”
The room goes quiet. The kids look intrigued at the new lore while the adults seem horrified. Roy glances at it. “Oh yeah. You were little bitty when it happened. I’m shocked they didn’t let you go when you called them pussies.”
“Excuse you, old man? I was a delightful child!” She scoffs, “Easily worth a few thousand.”
Were they really joking about this? Holy shit they were. Trust the Harper’s to come in with dark humor.
“Maybe nowadays, but then? You’d have settled for a sandwich and a nap.”
“Um,” Bianca blinks at the pair, “What happened?”
“Oh some jackasses kidnapped her. They were going to sell her to some creeps I’m sure, branded her to ‘keep track of merchandise’ blah blah blah.” Roy sips his soda.
It’s Lois who asks the next question, “And when you arrived?”
Oh that smile on his. Omega has seen it on Lian so many times. It’s not the Chesire cat grin she has during a fight. It’s an easy, almost laidback smile that could put anyone at ease….if the look in his eyes wasn’t murderous.
“When I left,” Roy says, ignoring the specifics of her question, “They were still breathing. I can’t say for sure if they were when my wife left.”

Ghoul Survey Results!
The Ghoul Survey managed to collect 110 responses (thank you all!). The nature of the data means that pie charts aren't working very well to display it coherently, so I'm just going to present the numbers as they are.
Without further ado...
Favourite companion:
Raul: 35 Hancock: 31 Charon: 24 Dean Domino: 9 Lenny: 4 Otto Steed (VB): 4 Herbert: 3 Billy-Bob: 3 Measles (VB): 2 Chris the Ghoulrilla: 2
Favourite non-companion character:
Gob: 20 Kent Connolly: 9 Jason Bright: 8 Beatrix Russell: 8 Daisy: 7 Carol: 5 Harold (proclaimed by one respondent as an 'honorary ghoul'): 5 Desmond Lockheart: 3 Arlen Glass: 3 Rotface: 3 Oswald the Outrageous: 3 Eddie Winter: 2 Tulip: 2 Calamity: 2 Wiseman: 2 Dr Sebastian (VB): 2 Harland: 2 Ghoulrillas generally: 2 Ghoul NCR soldiers generally: 2
And as always, a list of those with one vote: Tommy Ten-Toes, Bessie Lynn, Hadrian, Keely, Typhon, Snowflake, Talius, Skeeter, Set, Bobbi No-Nose, Vault-Tec Rep, Griffon, T-Minus, Betty Hill, Zhao, Ghoulified!Moira Brown, Sun of Atom, Greta, Argyle, Eugenie, Billy Peabody, and Bert Gunnarsson
Favourite settlement/faction:
Underworld: 49 Necropolis: 21 The Bright Brotherhood: 14 The Slog: 13 Gecko: 4 Kiddie Kingdom: 3 Kansas City/Gravestone: 2 The Reservation (VB): 1 Camp Searchlight: 1 Eugenie's ghoul settlement: 1 Broken Hills: 1
Do all ghouls eventually turn feral?
No: 97 Yes: 12
What causes ghouls to turn feral?
General level of radiation exposure post-ghoulification: 25 Social isolation: 22 The circumstances of how they ghoulified in the first place: 11 Reliance on radiation instead of food as an energy source: 10 Genetics: 9 Other: 23
Within the Other category, most said a combination of some or all of the above factors, or pure random chance. Other theories included…
Level of FEV exposure
The person's personality and morality pre-ghoulification
Infections and how well the ghoul cares for their wounds
A form of dementia
Psychic/supernatural phenomena
Brain chemistry pre-ghoulification
Level of mental duress post-ghoulification
Their level of internal connection to their own humanity
Ghouls cannot physically starve, but do feel hunger. If they don't eat for too long, they get a severe case of 'hangry' and turn feral
(Looking through the theories on this question caused me to suddenly and violently remember the glaringly absent 'What causes ghoulification in the first place?' question I'd planned to include… I guess that leaves room for Ghoul Survey 2: Electric Boogaloo?)
Do ghouls still physically need to eat, drink, sleep, all the basics?
Yes, to survive: 71 Yes, to avoid turning feral: 30 No: 9
If a child became ghoulified, would they remain child-sized, or grow?
Remain child-sized: 53 Grow to adult size as a human would: 39 Other: 18
The contents of the Other category, in loose order of how common each theory was:
They would grow to an extent, but not to what their human height would have been, and will likely have a unique appearance generally
They would eventually grow to an adult size, but over an extremely long time frame
The ghoulification process is so unique to each individual that it's impossible to predict what would happen, especially in an exceptional case like this
Children are so unlikely to survive ghoulification in the first place that asking this question is essentially irrelevant
Feral ghoul children would grow, others would not
And now we come to the final question, the blank text box. I'll add a handpicked selection of the original comments and a brief ship count under the cut for brevity's sake:
I have 3 ghoul OCs that came to life because of a joke me and my friend had. They're a group of prewar cheerleaders turned borderline raider gang. They're like 17/18 year old girls. […] So all in all while all the rest of my OCs are dying and barely getting by they're sunbathing by a murky, algae filled pool with silly sunglasses and crappy cocktails. Oh and yeah, they kept their uniforms and wear them all the time.
-
Ghouls have one of the most heart breaking stories. Especially the Pre-War ones. They watched many (if not all) of their friends and family die in one way or another. The best in universe example of how mentally draining being a Pre-War ghoul was is in Oswalds terminals around the Kiddy Kingdom in Nuka World. You get a real sense of the fear and loss of seeing these people you've been forced to get close with slowly stop mentally existing even if their still physically there. Oswalds hope that a cure can be found is heartbreaking because we know (as far as I'm aware) of no existing cure for Ghoulism and especially for feral ghouls.
-
Ghoulification isn't a condition or a sickness or a consequence of making poor choices, its an adaptation for life in the wasteland and a useful one at that.
-
I love all the ghoul characters and chose Lenny as my favourite because A. I think he’s underappreciated and B. Second only to Charon, he has the most potential for a really cool backstory that they never addressed. Dude is a doctor in Necropolis, he would have been treating the other vault dwellers for radiation sickness. Imagine the trauma! The angst! It included his father who’s to say there wasn’t more of his family in that vault that he tried to help and failed? How did he survive the super mutant attack on necropolis? Was he below the city or above it (was he angry at humans and got over it or just trying to live peacefully?)
-
I think 90% of the veteran rangers are all ghouls. I like to think there's large ghoul settlements all over. I like to think there's ghouls who look completely human. Chris Haversam is ghoulifing on the inside but he still looks human. The Human Companions in Fallout 4 who are all immune to radiation are that way due to that process.
-
It makes sense ghouls would think their immune to radiation, but really, it just takes longer. their resistant, not immune. places like the glowing sea would make amazing homes for ghouls to the average eye, but once you see how many feral ghouls are around you start to think about how many came there feral to begin with.
-
I have this hc about Jason Bright where he is a pskyer and the reason why his voice echos is because one of the voices you're hearing physically with your ears and the other he is unintentionally projecting into your mind with telepathy.
-
I imagine there's many Vaults that are full of just ghouls.
-
I got a headcannon that ghouls are naturally warmer, due of radiation. the 'younger' the ghoul, the warmer. pre war ghouls arent that warm as the ones who turned years ago.
-
Headcanon: if a ghoul works to maintain their voice (i.e. general vocal care like how opera singers do), they can keep their voice from getting as scraggly as most. My 76 OC was a Broadway actress before the war and continued to maintain her voice despite aging and eventual ghoulification, which allowed her to keep it (mostly) in tact.
-
I think Oswald was the reason his friends turned feral. He kept exposing them to radiation and every time he healed them with radiation or brought them back from the dead makes things harder. But ultimately it's a super rare gene that keeps non feral glowing ones.
-
I think the Eldritch Old Ones are the unofficial cause of the ghouls. The radiation is just an effect but the the Old Ones choose who to make feral, who to turn, and sometimes they'll turn without radiation at all.
-
Rn I’m working on a setting set in central MA, and one of the characters is a ghoul history teacher since he is a prewar ghoul. It’s been a fun concept to play with!
-
Bit of a headcanon- ghouls tend to have a heightened sense of smell, but are mostly nose blind to smells of burning and rot.
-
Glowing ones don't turn feral. Every feral glowing one was feral BEFORE they were glowing.
-
I hc that all ghouls are sensitive to light which is why most chill in dark places.
-
And last but certainly not least...
I want to marry Raul.
-
And so, that concludes that.
A huge thank you once again to everyone who took the survey and offered your thoughts, and I hope you found this results post interesting/insightful :D
Appendix: But Chaos, you promised us...
1 - Analysis of ghoul x ghoul ships!
So, upon an brief glance-through of the data whilst the survey was still running (I was trying not to 'spoil' the dataset for myself so I only peeked here and there), it seemed like a relatively large chunk of the recent respondents had mentioned ships, which is why I proposed adding a dedicated section for them in the results. However, in the final results we actually only have two ghoul x ghoul ships mentioned: Carol x Greta and Gob x Charon. A handful of other answers talked about shipping Charon and Gob with their LWs and Raul with their Couriers, but overall there just wasn't a whole lot of shipping discussion going on. Sorry to disappoint lol
2 - Born ghoul discussion!
Ah. Yes. That. Well, this is a similar situation again, actually. There are references to relevant characters within the dataset, but nothing went into anywhere near as much detail as I somehow convinced myself it had, and so I didn't have to leap in with the dreaded Born Ghouls 101 after all. I think my brain may have bluescreened prematurely upon seeing the slightest hinted mention of Van Buren's ghoul lore in there hgfdfgh
#ghoul survey#the results are in!#the overwhelming outcome of this survey for me has been a renewed desire to learn more about ghouls in the fallout games I tend to neglect#and I have to say. I may just not have reached the right audience but there was *zero* hancock thirst. I was shocked lol#long post

I feel like going vegan can be easy for some people but I also think a lot of people already have so much else to worry about, so they just don’t feel able to have the time or energy into researching veganism, learning new recipes, etc? It’s not that going vegan in itself is hard but if you have 100 other problems in your life sometimes small things can seem like too much?
also I feel like for some people, food may be the main source of pleasure in their life. So giving up their favourite foods can feel like a major sacrifice. I’m vegan myself, and I’m not saying this is a good enough reason not to be vegan, I don’t think it is, but I can see how it can be difficult for people - ofc I realise the animals’ suffering is far greater than the person giving up their favourite food, but to them, it might feel like a lot - and being completely honest, as a vegan, I don’t think many vegan alternatives to products taste as good as ‘the real thing’.
Idk I just think of my grandma when she was very old with dementia and not able to do much really - but she loved her food. I’d have found it really difficult to deny her non vegan food that she liked? what are your thoughts?
What you’re describing here is valid, but it’s also essentially just a description of the challenges of living an ethical life. There are always barriers to doing the right thing, and doing the wrong thing is usually quite a lot easier - that isn’t at all unique to veganism. Yes there are challenges and other things to worry about, but everyone should be doing their best to live well and to not cause harm when you can avoid it.
There are for sure people who experience real barriers to eating plant-based, some moreso than most, from health issues to food deserts, but there is really nothing unique about food when it comes to ethical decision making. We can advocate that people should do the right thing while acknowledging that doing so can be difficult.
I don’t think we need to be able to argue that vegan food tastes just as good (even though I think it does), or that it’s super easy for anyone to be vegan, we just need to be able to say that not exploiting animals and destroying our planet in the process is the right thing to do. It’s up to all of us as individuals to figure out our situation and how much we’re able to do the right thing in any context, but even if we’re not able to do it, it doesn’t change the fact that it is the right thing.
All veganism asks of us is to do our best, precisely because it is a moral principle and not a diet. Making ethical decisions will very often be more difficult - its easier to not think about companies you support, to not reflect on your own prejudices and to never challenge anyone else on theirs. You may have valid reasons for doing the wrong thing, hurting others to benefit yourself, for making other lives more difficult to make yours easier, but it being understandable and there being valid reasons behind it doesn’t make it any less wrong.

How Diet Can Help Long-Term Brain Health At Senior Citizen Home In Delhi NCR
You experience a variety of nutritional difficulties as a senior. Due to a reduced metabolism and decreased physical activity, you could feel less hungry. Due to alterations in their perception of taste and scent, you could get disinterested in eating. Eating may be difficult for you if you have health issues, such as gastrointestinal changes and tooth issues. You can also be taking drugs that prevent you from eating or that reduce your appetite.
According to a report, 5.2 million seniors are classified as "food insecure," which means they don't always have access to adequate food. In order to maintain both physical and mental health, proper eating is crucial. The prevention of cognitive decline and the fight against dementias like Alzheimer's can both be aided by a good diet. Learn the essentials of senior nutrition at senior citizen home in Delhi NCR, the ideal foods and nutrients for brain health, and certain foods and drugs to stay away from.
The Importance of Good Nutrition As You Age
A healthy diet is essential at any age. The appropriate nutrients may also aid in maintaining energy and weight while warding off conditions like heart disease, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, type 2 diabetes, and even some malignancies. You can experience chronic health issues, less energy, and compromised immune systems as a result of inadequate diet.
How Seniors Can Meet Their Nutritional Needs
When thinking about dietary requirements, you should take these things into account:
Regularly consume water. As you become older, you could lose your feeling of thirst, which increases the danger of dehydration. Avoid liquids with extra sugar or salt, and find out which drinks are best for your situation.
Consume a range of foods. Use the food categories as a guide, and make an effort to eat often from each one. Pick foods with minimal to no added salt, sugar, or saturated fats.
Consider the nutrition. Calcium, dietary fiber, potassium, vitamin B12, and vitamin D are frequently required for support.
Consume adequate protein. Lean meat, white flesh chicken, shellfish, dairy products, eggs, and beans are some examples of foods that can provide the protein needed to maintain muscle strength provided by senior citizen home in Delhi/NCR.
Keep a healthy weight. Watch your quantities and stick to nutritious snacks like carrots or celery with peanut butter or raisins as an addition.
How Foods Can Help or Hurt Your Brain Health
Health of the body and the brain are interdependent, but the brain requires particular attention provided by senior citizen home in Delhi NCR. While certain meals can harm the brain, others include the nutrients that are optimal for brain health.
The Best Nutrients To Help Support Brain Health
Specific nutrients can enhance brain health, which improves cognitive and emotional wellness, according to a National Institutes of Health research. The following nutrients are among the best:
Antioxidants - Antioxidants may also aid with inflammation and memory loss in addition to protecting the brain from harm. Antioxidants are abundant in spinach, carrots, potatoes, and broccoli.
B vitamins - B vitamins, such as B12 and folic acid, aid in the production and upkeep of brain chemicals. Additionally, they convert food into energy for the entire body. Dairy, eggs, leafy greens, legumes, meat, poultry, and shellfish are good sources of B vitamins.
The body uses choline in a variety of chemical processes. It is crucial for the growth of healthy brain function and for the upkeep of the nervous system. Choline may be found in dairy, eggs, fish, meat, and poultry, just as B vitamins.

New Elixir for longer life
To keep himself alive longer, Sam Altman, CEO of artificial intelligence lab OpenAI, is taking a diabetes drug called metformin. OpenAI developed ChatGPT, a recently popular chatbot. Metformin is a decades-old drug prescribed by doctors to millions of people with diabetes.
The World Health Organization lists this drug as an essential medicine that every strong modern healthcare system should have. In fact, Altman is not the only one who hopes to use this drug to make himself live longer. Many Silicon Valley “biohackers” take metformin as part of an antiaging regimen.
Some studies suggest the pills, which sell for about $0.10 to $0.20, can slow the effects of aging, reduce cognitive and vision loss, and protect against cancer and dementia. In addition to taking metformin, Altman says his anti-aging regimen includes “healthy eating, exercise and getting enough sleep.” This isn’t the first time he’s mentioned his health habits, having detailed his regimen in a 2018 blog post. He wrote at the time that he avoided sugar or any particularly spicy food
Because these foods can “worse” his digestion or cause inflammation. He drinks protein shakes, even though he “hates” them, and wakes up with a “big shot” of espresso. He also lifts weights three times a week and does occasional high-intensity interval training. In his blog post, he described it as an exercise program that made him “feel his best overall.” His sleep routine includes a “cold, dark, quiet room,” which he says improves sleep quality. If the room isn’t cold enough, he sometimes uses a chili pad. Whenever he suffered from insomnia, he took “low doses of sleeping pills” or “very low doses of marijuana”.
When he gets sick or gets worse, he calls his mom, dermatologist Connie Gibstine. “I have to assure him that he doesn’t have meningitis or lymphoma, he’s just stressed out,” Gistine said in an interview. One day, his longevity efforts may include a treatment from the antiaging biotech company Retro Biosciences. The startup’s mission is to “extend healthy human lifespan by 10 years.”
The company uses genetic engineering and plasma exchange to make cells younger, according to MIT Technology Review. Altman has secretly invested $180 million in Retro Biosciences’ death-delaying therapy. He joins Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, and Twitter founder Jack Dorsey in investing in those working to extend lifespan. #1896 - Datura stramonium - Jimsonweed
from Franz Eugen Köhler's Medizinal-Pflanzen
Not from @purrdence‘s NZ trip, but related to the Solanum previously, and current news on top of that.
AKA thornapple, moon flower, hell's bells, devil's trumpet, devil's weed, tolguacha, Jamestown weed, stinkweed, locoweed, pricklyburr, false castor oil plant, and devil's cucumber.
I don’t have my own photo, and a lot of those common names suggest a plant to avoid, for the same reason - it was the cause of a nationwide food recall here in Australia, recently, and that’s why I’ve decided to talk about this menace. The contamination in the packaged baby spinach wasn’t identified in the early reports, but the description of the symptoms were distinctive enough that I immediately thought ‘hang about, that sounds like Datura poisoning’, and it turns out I was correct.
Whilst the plant has been used in ethnogenic rituals by some cultures, it’s unlikely to ever be a recreational drug as the amount of scopalamine and atropine in this and other Daturas varies widely with season, growing conditions, and age of the plant making the plant exceptionally hazardous, and the results vary from ‘terrifying hallucinations’ to ‘death’. The symptoms of anticholinergic syndrome are distinctive enough there’s a traditional mnemonic: "Blind as a bat, mad as a hatter, red as a beet, hot as a hare, dry as a bone, the bowel and bladder lose their tone, and the heart runs alone" - pupil dilation and blurred vision, hallucinations and delusions, flushed skin, fever, dry mouth and dry skin, constipation and difficulty urinating, racing heartbeat and more. And if that wasn’t enough, repeated use appears to be strongly associated with later dementia.
And don’t ask me about the coffee-table herbology book that listed it as an aphrodisiac, a few decades back. I yelled blue murder when I read that.
Anyway - the binomial nomenclature derives from Sanskrit dhattūra 'white thorn-apple', and possibly from the Greek for ‘mad nightshade’. Jimsonweed comes from an incident in Jamestown, Virginia in 1676, where English soldiers found it is an unwelcome addition to a salad (much like the current case).
“This being an early plant, was gather'd very young for a boil'd salad, by some of the soldiers sent thither to quell the rebellion of Bacon (1676); and some of them ate plentifully of it, the effect of which was a very pleasant comedy, for they turned natural fools upon it for several days: one would blow up a feather in the air; another would dart straws at it with much fury; and another, stark naked, was sitting up in a corner like a monkey, grinning and making mows [grimaces] at them; a fourth would fondly kiss and paw his companions, and sneer in their faces with a countenance more antic than any in a Dutch droll.
In this frantic condition they were confined, lest they should, in their folly, destroy themselves—though it was observed that all their actions were full of innocence and good nature. Indeed, they were not very cleanly; for they would have wallowed in their own excrements if they had not been prevented. A thousand such simple tricks they played, and after eleven days returned themselves again, not remembering anything that had passed.
— Robert Beverley, Jr., The History and Present State of Virginia, Book II: Of the Natural Product and Conveniencies in Its Unimprov'd State, Before the English Went Thither, 1705
In the current outbreak, that’s affected over 200 people, heavy rainfall probably washed seeds into the spinach fields where the young sprouts were mistaken for baby spinach and picked.

For those that need numbers to understand- I'm going fully off my memory because unfortunately I recycled my copy
The October/November edition of the AARP magazine has a 2 page spread comparing cost of living from the 1960s and 2023- they listed $47,000 USD { again I am rounding down to the nearest thousand because I don't remember the specific to quote it} as the annual wage to survive in a household with a 65+ year old and homes cost around $400,000ish USD {which again rounding down because I don't remember if it's 449,999 or 449,000}
In my mind I consider making less than $47,000 the lower class cut off because,
1. You can't qualify to buy a house as easily if you're not in the 40k range, doubly under the US credit system and
2. fun horrifying fact, you gotta report 11 years to social security to get your full cut per month. If you don't qualify, they go by birth date and what is entitled to you on average if you pay taxes. My dad is applying this year and my mom has 9 years of receiving so I know wtf when I'm saying when I tell y'all a large portion of 65yr olds in the US get either 10k-22k a year (because no matter what $250-$300 will be put into a required medical insurance, regardless of whether one opts to use Medicare, or you'll be fined up to that amount yearly}. And that amount is barely enough to get by.
My dad and I earn, together, roughly 20k-30k a year + my mom getting her social security (she's on the $10k end unfortunately)- we barely got enough to pay our mortgage loan and I will, hopefully *knocks on wodd* inherit the home with less than 10k to owe. But what I got is not a universal experience and presently my dad and I are struggling to get food on the table, pay bills, and care for my mom since she has dementia. I'd argue the making $8k or less a year so you don't have to report taxes is a HUGE indicator of who's at poverty too. If you're renting with 2 other people and you all make 8k or less a year individually- yeah you're lower class as a unit but poor in the eyes of the government. At least one of you have to hit the $9k-$15k range to allow any of the 3 of you to take time off.
So living the under $47,000 a year experience for the majority of my life but especially having 0 adults making that amount since 2018 on their own to qualify as a living comfortably wage- $47,000 is the difference between just barely middle class and not. And with the cost of food and the US government not regulating businesses to avoid artificial inflation (tons of people are getting sued, being told not to turn into a monopoly, and investigated in the US food industry as I'm posting this) I expect that number to rise by the end of 2024 to $52k *aggressively knocks on wood* which I hope doesn't happen
Renting isn't "middle class" unless you got around $47k+ a year to start a savings account that isn't the spare change jar (at least from my experience- the highest my parents ever made was $45kish over 15 years ago and what AARP is reporting)
Ive noticed recently that my generation has... no concept of what the various economic classes actually are anymore. I talk to my friends and they genuinely say things like "at least i can afford a middle class lifestyle with this job because i dont need a roommate for my one bedroom apartment" and its like... oughh
You guys, middle class doesnt mean "a stable enough rented roof over your head," it means "a house you bought, a nice car or two, the ability to support a family, and take days off and vacations every year with income to spare for retirement savings and rainy days." If all you have is a rented apartment without a roommate and a used car, you're lower class. That's lower class.
And i cant help but wonder if this is why you get kids on tumblr lumping in doctors and actors into their "eat the rich" rhetoric: economic amnesia has blinded you to what the class divides actually are. The real middle class lifestyle has become so unattainable within a system that relies upon its existence that theyve convinced you that those who can still reach it are the elites while your extreme couponing to afford your groceries is the new normal.
#mun post#i wish i had that damn copy of the aarp magazine still - they gate keep that shit and it's not available everywhere#qnd also yes i hope i do inherit the home with no issues and a teansfer of ownership goes smoothly because I'd just open the 2#extra rooms to anybody who needs a rent space and we can split utilities and property taxes#i live by a school so#my end goal is to get a family settled in and just do a repeat transfer of power rather than forcing a sale#it would be sick to not have to force another generation to pay mortgage- especially since i would be using a squatters rights loophole#but if i did have to sell the house- ideally I'd like a native American family to move in since im 99.9% sure the land was stolen#and yes ive been secretly planting potatoes and onions to ensure the next generation has a fail safe - i need to get a sunflower bed set up#because some but not all the dirt is healthy#also no we dont have savings- we have a cash box for emergencies- if you got a cash box you're for sure lower class

The Link Between Sleep and Neurological Health: What You Need to Know
Sleep is a fundamental aspect of our daily lives, yet it is often overlooked in discussions about health and well-being. Emerging research highlights the profound impact of sleep on neurological health, revealing that the quality and duration of sleep significantly influence brain function and overall mental well-being. Understanding this relationship is crucial for maintaining a healthy brain and preventing neurological disorders.
The Importance of Sleep for Brain Function
During sleep, the brain undergoes vital processes that are essential for cognitive functioning and overall health. Sleep is divided into several stages, including rapid eye movement (REM) and non-REM sleep, each serving different purposes:
Memory Consolidation: During sleep, the brain consolidates memories, transferring information from short-term to long-term memory. This process is vital for learning and retention. Studies have shown that individuals who get sufficient sleep after learning new information perform better on memory tests than those who are sleep-deprived.
Detoxification: The brain has its own cleansing system, known as the glymphatic system, which becomes more active during sleep. This system helps clear waste products, including beta-amyloid and tau proteins, which are associated with Alzheimer's disease. Lack of sleep can hinder this detoxification process, increasing the risk of neurodegenerative diseases.
Emotional Regulation: Sleep is essential for regulating emotions and managing stress. Insufficient sleep can lead to increased irritability, anxiety, and depression, all of which can negatively impact neurological health. The brain's ability to process emotions and react appropriately is significantly impaired when sleep-deprived.
The Consequences of Sleep Deprivation
Chronic sleep deprivation can have serious implications for neurological health. Studies indicate a strong link between insufficient sleep and the development of various neurological disorders, including:
Cognitive Decline: Long-term sleep deprivation is associated with cognitive decline, increasing the risk of dementia and other cognitive disorders in older adults. Impaired cognitive function can manifest as difficulties with attention, problem-solving, and decision-making.
Mood Disorders: Poor sleep quality is closely linked to mood disorders such as anxiety and depression. These conditions can further exacerbate sleep issues, creating a vicious cycle that negatively impacts neurological health.
Increased Risk of Neurological Disorders: Research has shown that individuals who experience chronic sleep disturbances are at a higher risk for conditions like Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease. The cumulative effects of sleep loss can lead to neuroinflammation and oxidative stress, contributing to the development of these disorders.
Tips for Improving Sleep Quality
Given the critical role of sleep in neurological health, it is essential to prioritize sleep hygiene. Here are some tips to improve sleep quality:
Establish a Sleep Routine: Aim to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends. This helps regulate your body’s internal clock and improves the quality of your sleep.
Create a Sleep-Inducing Environment: Ensure your sleep environment is dark, quiet, and cool. Consider using blackout curtains, earplugs, or white noise machines to minimize disturbances.
Limit Screen Time Before Bed: The blue light emitted by screens can interfere with the production of melatonin, the hormone responsible for regulating sleep. Aim to turn off electronic devices at least an hour before bedtime.
Practice Relaxation Techniques: Incorporate relaxation techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or gentle yoga into your bedtime routine to help calm your mind and prepare your body for sleep.
Be Mindful of Food and Drink: Avoid heavy meals, caffeine, and alcohol close to bedtime, as these can disrupt sleep. Opt for lighter snacks if you’re hungry before bed.
