a minuscule splatter of 'female coded misogynistic men in asoiaf?! how dare' echo of conversation on my dash has me thinking of how on the one hand grrm does a tiny little bit of gender play with most his characters but on the other hand, if we only look at the male characters, there are a few where he very clearly does a demasculinisation/feminisation/you-are-the-woman thing but also several where he doesn't. very clearly for instance, he does it with jaime, theon and sam, each in different ways. but i also was thinking of how aeron greyjoy has no lick of "what if he was the woman" wordplay or themeplay at all. we all know these conversations quickly devolve into several annoying directions one of which being "oh so you are saying that a victimised man becomes a woman and that's how he's feminised?" but clearly that's not it. jaime, theon and sam are feminised explicitly. aeron, for instance, while echoed with melisandre as female character, is never feminised, not in his arc, not in his victimisation, not in his relationship to euron.

On a COMPLETELY different note than my last post: am I the only porn writer that faces the conundrum of writing explictly average or tiny penises?
I can't tell if it's a ME problem or if other readers really do read it this way as well, but I feel like because of just like...the social narrative around penis size and it equating to masculinity/sexiness/ability, I feel like explictly mentioning a penis as being average or small (statistics show that women â primary readerbase for the gay smut I write â think 8in is ideal. 5in is AVERAGE. Meaning there are plenty below, just as much as above. And 8in is NOT high on the bell curve. Not sure about what other MLM think is ideal, but there's definitely a stereotype of size queens in the community, so might be just as much of a problem, but I don't know) pops the sexiness bubble, or makes it weird and uncomfortable because it feels demasculinising or depreciating (even though it's not intended to be!), OR has to be written all in as a fetish specifically for small penises. Which is also fine and nice, but is a separate thing and not what I'm aiming for, I just want more normal representation in smut without it feeling weird.
But, like, is it me? I don't really understand why it makes me so deeply uncomfortable and makes it feel instantly unsexy if an author compares the size of the characters' penises, or makes an (even lighthearted) comment about one being small, because I personally LIKE small penises, I prefer average penises, and I would prefer a small one over a very large one in a partner. But honestly, like, a partner comes with whatever they come with. And I like them all haha. I know it must be like society really having hammered in small penis = bad/shameful/less of a man, but IDK. That just makes me more concerned that most of my audience would feel the same way if I still have that ingrained so deeply even when I both have realistic expectations about penises, and actively LIKE smaller ones and don't find them to be a turn off IRL.

From a russian fandom inhabitant perspective, I should add that I feel like I disliked rochu exactly for this reason back in its popularity days. Because almost all the fics lacked character depth and Russia and China were this stereotypical yaoi couple, and this was all their dynamic was about: Russia following China in panda suit and just being huge strong seme and China - a small delicate uke. I wasn't familiar with such concepts as "Asian fetishization" or "demasculinisation of east Asian men", but those 99% of fanfiction definitely felt stupid.

I think, in Rohanâs complex cultural landscape, queer issues are also viewed in complex ways. On the most basic level, various disparate Northmen cultures had a variety of ways of looking at queer sexuality but none of them truly denied non-hetero relationships from being accepted within communities. And in terms of rohirric attitudes, any negative views of queer sexuality can be reasonably assumed to come from Gondorian/dunadan influence.Â
However, some of the time those influences are hard to discern, with particularly misogynistic-originated/hypermasculanised stigmas against gay men and their committed relationships appearing to come from the oldest traditions and beliefs of the Rohir, traceable back to Eorlâs time and before. BUT even these have been influenced by Dunadain religious beliefs, for these of course were traditions descended from the Eotheod whom had been allies with Gondor long before Rohanâs creation.Â
PRACTICALLY speaking, and with reference to Theodred, stigma would have been levelled upon him most from the higher nobility within Rohan (if he had ever openly been attracted too and loved men exclusively). However, there was also a running âtraditionalistâ view, more or less prevalent depending upon the rohir community and changeable by generation, that demasculinised not necessarily sex with men, but men who were not attracted to women and whom fell in love with other men. This is often framed as a viewpoint in rebellion against Gondorian influence, a kind of flipped version of Gondorâs perception that profound love between the same sex is blessed and honourable, but sex is a corruption of the soul etc etc. However in the end at itâs root it is more of a mutated prejudice passed down and changed through generations.Â
Indeed amongst some area-specific Rider/military cultures, taking sexual partners among your comrades is commonplace and almost expected, but both positions and romantic attachments are shamed with varying frequency and harshness. Theodred had witnessed or experienced various aspects of these cultures during his youth as a Rider in different Eoreds, but he had still been mostly discreet and kept his reputation very clean.Â
In general, if (or when depending upon verse) Theodred were to âoutâ himself, it would not be such a catastrophic social death as it might be in Gondor. He would still be mostly accepted and there would be no tangible consequence to it. However there would be intangible social consequences, biases and altered opinions that would have made his life and duties significantly more difficult than before, which is not to mention Gondorian opinion. It could be equated too a similar experience of being gay in England right now, with differences of cause and expression of such opinions, but similar impacts and severities.Â
This is in tandem with @shieldarmâ âs own HC post, I think I agree that queer women had an easier time being queer, in that they were met either with nonchalant acceptance or bewilderment, viewed more as a âstrange sortâ but not with any particular malice or shame, especially when they exemplified the role they had chosen to take on (in Eowynâs case). For women, the issue was more them being women than being queer and with histories of women warriors littering Eotheod history, they had a cultural space that they could fill.Â

idk i just think its weird how people call yeonjun nonbinary (completely unironically) because his bandmates call him noona/unnie sometimes but when it comes to wendy (hyung), suyeon (oppa) and even vivi (haengnim), the 'gendered' aspect of the nicknames just isn't acknowledge at all? like are people really this eager to demasculinise an asian man...?

There's an allegory to the sensates; it's a gay allegory. Just as gays have been medicalised, and often faced oppression through that medicalisation, so have the sensates.
There are stories of what it means to be a man; does it mean cruel and violent? Men in the sensate cluster have been accused of being a queer, or a bitch, as if there's something wrong or unmanly about being a certain way. Well, women and queer have always been looked down on, so using them to dehumanise men shouldn't be surprising.
Then again, in some way, men seem to dehumanise themselves, as they seem to take pleasure in detaching themselves from sensitivity, from emotion, from violent consequences. This is another point of sense8; such men have ruled the world with an iron fist, and they are less human than those that remain connected. Such men see people like sensates as worse than dehumanised, from their perspective: they see them as demasculinised.
They don't even know such beings aren't such an undignified existence. They far more human and dignified than such men. Living such narcissistic, petty lives are hollow; people who rely on love and connection are the ones living their best lives.

It is taken for granted that Hugh Hefner exploited women, both individually and as a group, and itâs interesting to think of parallel examples of the exploitation of men, again both individually and en masse.
Generally itâs rare to refer to men as being exploited, and one could argue thatâs because fewer men are exploited, and indeed there are those who imply that men cannot be exploited, or that society refrains from exploiting men.
The canonical examples of exploited men are probably prisoners used as slave labour and conscripted soldiers, but even then exploitation is more commonly used to describe child soldiers, suggesting that adult men have sufficient agency to not be exploited even in the presence of conscription.
One suspects that people avoid describing men as exploited as it can seem like a further denial of their masculinity, in a sense revictimising them and continuing their exploitation. Even under exploitation, a man must be stoic; stories of suffering are only valued if they end in triumph and redemption.
This is most stark in cases of sexual exploitation, whether by assault or more benign examples like jokes about male strippers. Even to be described as sexually exploited is to be feminised, and hence demasculinised, which continues the exploitation.
The flip side of âmen cannot be exploitedâ is nothing you do to a man counts as exploitation.
