The car makes the man

James didn't actually want a car. Cars were the death of the planet. Cars were an expression of a cult of masculinity. Cars were time wasters. But the new job he had required a car. He couldn't cope with his deadlines without one. The new job paid well. The car was paid for twice and three times over thanks to the pay rise. And he only wanted something small and used. The car had to be reliable and use little or no fossil fuel. And above all, it had to be small. Finding a parking space in James' neighborhood was hell.

James had prepared himself. On his iPad, he had selected a number of possible offers. And now he was walking through the rows of used car dealers far outside the city, looking for the small cars he had liked on the internet. And then he saw his nightmare: the epitome of a used car dealer approaching him. A man almost 2 meters tall, corn-fed, toothpaste grin. And a handshake like a vice.

"Hi, I'm Honest Pete, how can I help you son?" James said looking around first, thank you very much! Pete said that wouldn't be a problem. Could he offer a coffee? James nodded and tried as hard as possible not to make eye contact with the pushy salesman. Pete disappeared, only to return shortly afterwards with a tin cup. James was surprised, he had expected an espresso cup. "You look like a guy who drinks his coffee strong, black and hot. Am I right?" James was actually more of an herbal tea drinker. But to be polite, he took the cup and took a sip. Shit! It was bloody strong! "So son, who's the car for? Your girlfriend? You won't have a daughter who can drive yet." Pete laughed boomingly. James smiled curiously and said that he needed a car for work. "I knew you were lost. Follow old Pete!" James actually wanted to protest. But my God, Pete was a professional. Maybe he should make a suggestion. "On a side note, son: I like your haircut! A good honest mullet is the only way a man can wear his hair long. Not that hipster man bun shit. Am I right?" Hehehe, thought James. Business in the front, party in the back. And he had a lot of partying in the back. Pete asked what his name was. James replied and Pete slapped him on the shoulder. "Jim, nice to meet you. I bet we're going to have a lot of fun today.“ Just as James was about to reply that it was "James" and not "Jim", Pete took a tin of chewing tobacco out of his pants, took a pinch and held it out to James. "Sorry, smoking's not allowed here. But maybe this will help you." Shit, Pete was a good judge of character. James's fingers and teeth were more than enough to recognize the smoker. James gratefully accepted a pinch. Good stuff!

James and Pete passed a row of sports cars. James looked not uninterested. But Pete recognized his look and waved it right off. "Son, this European shit is not for you. You'll only fit in these cars if you're anorexic. And you easily weigh 260 pounds, don't you?" The man was good, James thought to himself…. It might be closer to 280 pounds right now, he thought as he patted the beginnings of a beer belly. "Son, no shame! A man's belly has to jiggle when he laughs. Otherwise he's not a man." Pete laughed again and his belly jiggled. James joined in and his belly jiggled too. "Besides," Pete punched James' shoulders again. "I know the problem. Still a brick wall of a man in high school, but once you have to work…" "You said it, Pete!" replied James. "I mean, in high school days, I lived on the football field and in the gym formally. But now…" Pete said, not fishing for compliments here, Jim was still one of the big boys. It was all the more important to find the right car for him. James snorted out the chewing tobacco and took a sip of coffee. It was still hot, but now it didn't burn the roof of his mouth. Pete indicated that James had something on his mouth. Fuck yeah, dew tobacco liked to get stuck in his mighty full beard. He rubbed his beard and asked "better?". Pete nodded and asked Jim's shoe size. At least a 12, right? James replied a 12 in tuner shoes, more like a 13 in boots like now. "I thought so" Pete replied. "We need something with big pedals, don't we James?" "Mate, it's Jim, not James! And the pedals shouldn't be the only thing that's big about the car." "Sure, it should suit you, big boy! But I think we've got just the thing for you here! Perfect for work. You can fit all your tools in the back. And if you go hunting, you'll have room for a dog, a rifle and a deer."

Jim took off his trucker's cap and ran his fingers through his sweaty, greasy hair. 8,000 dollars was way over his limit. His heating business wasn't making that much money at the moment. Oil heaters weren't particularly popular at the moment. But the car was awesome: big, powerful and manly! He opened the door and climbed into the driver's seat. Damn, it was like coming home. Pete was an asshole. Of course he had hit his taste exactly. He liked the car so much that he got a hard-on in his old army pants. And it didn't get any smaller when he felt Pete's hand on the bulge in his pants.

Pete became Jim's best buddy. At first they only fucked so that Jim could get a good price for the pickup. But they became the best fuck and gym buddies you could imagine. The only thing Jim couldn't persuade Pete to do was a mullet. Honest Pete was just a miserable white-collar bourgeois. But he sucked Jim's cock like the devil!

P1 Saburov and Viktor are so terribly underrated and it's such a shame because their characters are immensely interesting and way more developed beyond "evil corrupt politician" and "isolated and rich single father with much children cooler than him", which is how I've seen some people halk about them. You are doing god's work

Oh deeply... I do think there's an effect where an important part of both of their arcs as rulers is that they're rendered obsolete halfway through the game, as soon as the Inquisitor shows up and overtakes their authority. from that point on only their associated healer gets to interact with them at any depth, but both of them are also planning to die (...normal reaction to being rendered obsolete) so it's harder for their dialogue to stick outside what's most vital for quests. also since nobody plays changeling route :-(

I see victor reduced to 'wifeguy' more than 'guy with important kids' more often (and enjoy it, even partake!) but he stands out to me as having the most personal, even self-centered wants in the cast- repairing his relationships with (living) family, the wish to leave and finish his university degree; in fact I'd say victor is someone who's been deprived of the things most important to him for a long time, and is in a position where he could get them back, if he only abandoned the project of leading the Town towards utopia which the kains have devoted themselves to for the past 5 years / forever. and nina's soul is present in and tied to that project, but there is some level on which only victor remembers her as a person instead of a divine instrument- and that lends itself to the ability to grieve and move on. if victor kain walked out of pathologic I think he'd ultimately be happy, and I think he's unique among the rulers for that. but the tragedy of all of the families is that they're embedded in a town and traditions that Will Not Let Them Out

whereas saburov is like. he grew up in this town, his mother would've been a Mistress herself, the town's needs and impositions as a structure are so ingrained to him that he doesn't conceive of any selfhood or duty that Doesn't involve his role as The Saburov, putting himself on the line for everything that might befall the town. and the patterns are also so ingrained to him that he starts to think he can change or at least outsmart them. come to think of it, the whole first half of changeling route is his trying to find someone responsible for the plague, and ultimately when there is no such person he takes that responsibility onto himself but He Tries so hard first... clara's presence disrupts the balance and therefore taking her in might allow him to control the balance (and per recent discussion there's a masculinity in his need for control), except the conjectures he makes don't really apply to something completely new and unknown. and to his credit saburov loves changing his mind when presented with new information and there's a lot of guilt accumulating because of it and ultimately he gives up that control to clara, being one of few characters to genuinely grow over the course of the game. But in a way that's still symbolically equivalent with death 🙂

So they're two self-abnegating people who are the "less important" member of their ruling family and become surpassed by their daughters in the town to come, but from totally perpendicular backgrounds that cross just at this point... it's very fun that they don't get along as administrators when rulerhood is the one thing they kind of share

hello you two!!! i’m gonna be real i’ve been a bit all over the place lately (pjsk brain has put dangan brain on hold surprisingly enough, and also i’m prepping to go back to college next semester lmao), so i don’t have. too many priest au thoughts. but i HAVE been thinking abt some of the other characters who live in the town of jabberwock, illinois! :]

ok first off. i can’t put hajime anywhere without allowing him his soul bro. even i am not that cruel. so yes souda exists here! he is a mechanic, as to be expected, working out of the shop his dad runs. he and hajime meet when hajime spots him working on like…. let’s say a tractor or smth and goes over to help bc he recognizes the model. they’re buddies, they’re tight! souda is chill, but he’s also like. the epitome of 2000s casual homophobia. most of it comes from his dad, and tbh it wouldn’t be unlikely for souda to be bisexual and not know it (just like canon <3), BUT this au doesn’t focus on him so that’s just a little bonus nuance. For Funsies. as previously mentioned, souda and hajime get along well (souda’s is hajime’s closest male friend, aside from the Father), and they often hang out together. at first souda kind of calls into question some of hajime’s gentler/girlier habits, but overall he does see hajime as Very Masculine so he tries not to give him too much shit, especially since it really seems to bother him. he HAS absolutely called hajime a metrosexual for like. Conditioning His Hair. that sort of thing. but it’s all lighthearted and he does really care abt hajime. that’s his bestie

funnily enough the only other character whose role i’m 100% sure of is gundham’s. he’s one of hajime’s coworkers at the farm supply store! hajime works in more botany-related departments, whereas gundham focuses more on animal husbandry. hajime is on polite terms with gundham, but they’re not too close. in all honestly, hajime’s kind of intimidated by gundham. this guy dresses super scary and actively associates himself with demons and the occult….. it’s a little offputting for him (hajime has never met an alt person before </3 which is such a shame bc he would make a wonderful emo but i digress). overall though, he can tell that gundham cares a lot about his animals and treats them well, so he has respect for him regardless of his reservations. so long as he’s a good person, right? gundham is also dating sonia who comes to visit him at work sometimes (she and chiaki are friends as well, so hajime’s acquainted with her) but that’s all i really have on her right now.

i’ve been trying to think about who would usually run the sunday school. i think chiaki would help, but she wouldn’t be the type to actually teach it. y’know who i think would be fun for that, though? mahiru! this is very not-fleshed-out, but i think she possesses just the right balance of strict and caring to be a good teacher, and i think she’d be good with the woh. i… don’t actually know that much about church structure so i need to research if she’d get a fancy title for being the sunday school teacher, but overall that’s What She Does. of course she’s still best friends with hiyoko, but idk what hiyoko’s deal will be yet so that’ll take some time.

i think jabberwock absolutely has a hanamura diner, owned by a much less creepy teruteru (my au my rules i can fix him if i want) who’s trying to keep the place running to help his mom cover her medical bills. i think it’d be fun if imposter works there (i . may have to give them a name now that i’m thinking about it) but that’s a very young idea, needs time to germinate

that’s all i got for now! a little bit of worldbuilding, a little bit of making jabberwock feel like a real town. yah 👍 oh idea i just got now. what if chiaki works at a local arcade….. the kind that’s old and kinda musty…. yeaahhhh

Today: Zorro the Gay Blade (1981)

Guys, this movie is A Lot. Still needs to be talked about at some point….

Zorro the Gay Blade is a 1981 comedy movie made with the intention of poking fun at the swashbuckling genre. The story starts like most Zorro sequels, with Don Diego’s son (also called Diego) returning home after his father’s death, only to find injustice running rampant. Discovering that his late father was once the legendary outlaw Zorro, he takes up his mantle and his fight for justice…

… only that in this version, he immediately hurts his ankle and is no longer able to continue being Zorro. Luckily his estranged brother, Ramón arrives at that very moment, and it is he who continues being Zorro, with a gay twist on the character.

This movie is a lot. I’m not sure of. I could actually recommend it.

Firstly, I must say that it is genuinely well-made. The world they’re creating is believable, and a lot of the jokes stick the landing. Also, introducing the idea of queerness into such a traditionally masculine universe really allows them to question the fundaments of the genre. That having been said…

Good gay representation it is not.

Ramón is a joke character, with close to no personality beyond “being gay”, a thing this movie associates with being effeminate. Despite being the titular character, it is his straight brother who is the protagonist and who gets to ride into the sunset with a love interest. The gay jokes are all based on (now) outdated stereotypes, and the movie is very clearly aimed at a straight main audience, instead of being by and for queer people.

I don’t know if I can recommend actually watching this movie, but still it is an important glimpse in the past and the way queer men were depicted forty years ago. It is also interesting to compare it with queer action movies today.

I have so many thoughts and headcanons and so many of them are making there way into my fics.

I love Ratso he's so much fun to think about and write, I definitely think he's autistic, just everything about him, things he says and how other characters interact with him I'm like 'wow, you are just. So fucking relatable' the obsession with baseball and turbo troll action figures, he's just such a geek and I love it. I definitely think he's super smart with math and science stuff, like top of his class sort of smart. I headcanon that he went to college for theoretical physics right after high school and got a job working as like security for a bar or club at night and he got recruited for The Dark Hand through that, working at a club The Dark Hand owns. In my long fic I'm working on he dropped out of college to work for The Dark Hand full time so he never finished his degree and still has major regrets about that.

I bet Ratso is wicked smart with math shit, like he'll just rattle off some insane mental math when the situation arises and everyone just stares at him like, how can you possibly know that?? But he does! Check it on a calculator and he's right! He might not be able to tell you what Valmont is thinking but he can tell you how long its going to take to fly from San Francisco to Chicago based off of flight patterns, the weight of the plane and their speed.

I think that Ratso and Finn and Chow all met working at The Dark Hand, that was their one connection and then they became best friends and ride or die. They've got this intense ride or day relationship, like, 'fuck the rest of the world, I'd sacrifice the entire city if it meant keeping you safe' sort of thing going on.

Ratso loves baseball so much, it's been his special interest since he was a kid, he's got memorabilia, he was on the baseball team in high school, he just loves baseball so much. In baseball its good to have a tall person on first base so they can reach up and catch stray high balls and throw it real fast to second base (yes I researched baseball just because Ratso likes it) so I hc that he was the first baseman when he played baseball.

Finn and Chow could definitely care less but they are supportive boyfriends so they both let Ratso just infodump and ramble for hours about baseball and anything else, just sat on the couch "uh huh, yeah sure" while Ratso rambles. They go to baseball games and Finn and Chow let Ratso explain all the rules and about each role of each team member and the history of the team and everything and they all have a great time.

Ratso's family stays pretty much the same in like everything I write, he's got his mom who is fucking amazing, I love his mom, super supportive, great mom, and he's got three sisters, two older and one younger. Ratso strikes me as a guy who grew up with sisters and a mother who never allowed any toxic masculinity to fester, so he's super secure in himself and his relationships and he was determined to be a good person and not be an asshole like all the guys his sisters would date and complain about. Ratso's got an absent father because I love angst because it just makes sense in my mind but he's got this really big Italian extended family who he knows well and grew up with and is really close with. His mom definitely taught him how to cook so he's a really good cook, making all these nice Italian American dishes which is good because Finn and Chow live off of take out, and Ratso likes cooking so he'll definitely be in the kitchen every night making something great 🤌

I hc Ratso as gay, I never write him as anything else. I think he probably dated some girls in high school before realizing that that wasn't really his thing and subsequently coming out to his family, who were all really nice and supportive about it which is great considering it was the 80s and when people at school found out he got kicked off the baseball team and lost a lot of friends he had made. But its okay, he keeps it trucking. Ratso's got this upbeat optimistic attitude, and it's not born from ignorance, its born from this attitude of "I'd rather hope for a better life and be let down then to give up on hope all together." He'd rather see the best in people. Which makes working for a crime syndicate...difficult, to say the least.

Finn is not the same. Finn is a cynic. He's happy with his own life, his personal life and his hobbies but he doesn't think people are inherently good or kind. He believes everyone is selfish, and he isn't going to go out of his way to not be selfish because that's just how the world works. People are shitty to each other and there's nothing you can do to stop it so there's not even a point in trying.

Finn strikes me as a man who is deeply insecure about himself, and he masks that by being the complete opposite. He is out going and loud and conceited and has so much confidence in his own skills and ability because if he doesn't put on his mask of over the top-ness then he'll start to sprial about how his life is going nowhere and 'oh god I'm 30 and I haven't done anything with my life'

My headcanons for Finn's background are much more fluid than for Ratso or Chow, and I think its because I like to see what you can do with his character. In some fics he's an only child, sometimes he has six siblings, sometimes he's got twin younger sisters. Sometimes he's close with his parents, sometimes his dad is nice, sometimes he's an asshole. Sometimes he's got this big extended family and sometimes he's functionally an orphan, it just depends on what I'm writing and what I'm trying to say with the story and his personal development.

I find Finn compelling, and I think that's because I view him as a person who, despite all his personal development, is not sorry for the things he's done. He sees working for The Dark Hand as a means to an end, the end being his own wealth and success. Now I don't say that to mean I think he's a greedy, obsessed person like Valmont is, but I think Finn knows as well as anyone that there is truly nothing money won't buy. He wants success, in the back of his mind he still wants his name in lights as some major musical artist, but in reality he wants stability and he wants a steady life. He doesn't want to have to work for the rest of his life at some dead end job just to make ends meet, and if working for a crime syndicate has the possibility of giving him the life he wants, then he's willing to do whatever is asked of him to get that.

Finn has morals, he has lines he won't cross, but if you wanted genuine regret for his actions, apologies for the people he's hurt, then its just never going to happen. He's not sorry.

Finn is, in my mind, a bit prickly, I think is the best word for it. He doesn't open up to people, and he'll make plenty of jokes and jabs, but genuine vulnerability is hard to get to with him, he deflects and deflects and deflects. It takes time for him to trust Chow and Ratso, it takes lots of long talks and the two of them being able to see through his facades and jokes to get to the core of what he's trying to say without saying it for them to get close. The pay off being that once Finn is close with someone he is an open book. He's very affectionate, he's very sweet, it just takes some time to get there. Finn loves at 100% and he doesn't know how to turn that down, so he keeps people at arms length so they don't hurt him.

Finn is very open about his sexuality, he doesn't try and pretend he's not gay, if you don't like the fact that's gay then you can leave, but he doesn't put that part of himself in any sort of box or try to contain who he is. He's proud of his sexuality, he's proud of who he is, and he's not going to apologize for it.

Now Chow. Chow is interesting. (I love him so much its unreal) Chow has a lot of complexities and a lot of complex feelings about things, most of which he doesn't know how to say out loud. I hc that Chow grew up in Chinatown in San Francisco and he has pretty traditional immigrant parents. And while he loves his family, he doesn't have a lot of family. Most of his extended family is back in China, and while he's visited a few times he's not super close with any of his extended family, so its mostly just him and his parents as his older brother. Chow is someone who loves his family and wants so much to be close with his family, but has always felt like an outcast.

While his brother bore the brunt of the responsibility to be the perfect oldest sibling, Chow was still constantly compared to his brother and told he needed to try harder, and while his brother could fill the role of star student their parents forced on them, Chow just couldn't keep up.

He believed himself to be stupid for so many years just because he wasn't a straight A student like his brother, and it kind of did a lot of damage to his self esteem and self image.

Chow also strikes me as someone who knew he was gay from a young age, and someone who was visibly gay all growing up, he just couldn't hide it even when he tried and he was bullied pretty viciously for that all growing up.

Chow loves his family, but he's never believed they would be accepting of his sexuality, and he didn't want to cause a stir, he didn't want to be the person causing waves or breaking their family up so he just...never told them. And he just avoids questions about his love life and if he's ever going to have kids. It weighs pretty heavy on him, this feeling that he's letting his parents down by being gay.

Chow strikes me as someone who tries to act cool and does all this posturing because he was bullied so much for being gay and being a geek. He's got the leather jacket and the cool guy sunglasses and he's trying to act tough, but in reality he's as much of a geek as Ratso is. He loves video games, he was constantly at the arcade as a kid and he's always got the newest gaming systems. Finn's not one for video games but Ratso is so they will often spend hours playing Diddy Kong racing or Doom or Resident Evil or even sitting together on their gameboys playing Pokémon or Wario or Kirby.

Chow is a romantic. He loves all the cheesy stuff, the flowers and the gifts and the Valentines Day dinners. And he gets embarrassed about liking it, but Ratso and Finn are accommodating and they do the stupidly romantic things because they love him (they love it too, but the look on Chow's face is worth it everytime)

Chow I imagine has a hard time talking about his feelings, he has a hard time talking about things that really matter to him, he just didn't grow up in a household that said in words how much they loved eachother, so when he started dating Ratso who did grow up in a house like that and is very openly affectionate it was...a culture shock, to say the least. Chow gets better at talking about his feelings, but they also work around it in a lot of ways. If Chow handing Finn a stack of his favorite magazines is a declaration of love, then that's what it is, it doesn't need to be any more complicated than that.

Okay, I have even more thoughts but I've been talking for a while now and I am getting so excited thinking about them that my hands are literally shaking right now so I am going to go ahead and post this and take a break but yes! OUGH. i love lister so much. he's my favourite character for sure although rimmer is a close second. he's just such a fun silly guy but with this sad side to him....... i rlly appreciate how he's shown as tough and masculine and yet he's allowed to have hobbies like knitting and cry at romantic movies and care abt his friends without it being mocked. he's not a perfect person but i adore him anyways. very relatable at times as well lol. i also have a massive crush on him i think abt kissing him at least once a day hehehehehe

idk if this is rlly unpopular but i get a little frustrated by his inconsistent characterisation in the show, esp in s8 compared to other seasons. i get that he does whatever the writers think is funniest but sometimes he does or says something and im like ":( lister wouldn't say that......." even though he is literally saying it in canon lol

i wish his relationship with kochanski had gotten a proper resolution/he could move on from her and stop pursuing her romantically....... ive made longer posts abt this before but i just feel like his initial crush on her was just a shallow schoolboy kind of crush and it feels like a disservice to both of them that he's still chasing after her after getting to know her and them clearly not being romantically compatible. like in some episodes they're best friends but then the writing goes back to having lister treat her like an object rather than a person and it irritates me. i wish they could just be friends bc i adore their friendship and when lister interacts with her in a platonic way it's clear that there's such a fun dynamic there but it was utilised so rarely :(

ohhhh i don't rlly tend to do crossover ships so this was a hard one....... not rlly a ship more of a friendship but i would love to see him interact with the doctor from dr who lol. ik it's kind of a predictable choice as a crossover bc they're both british sci fi but i think depending on the iteration of the doctor they could either get along rlly well or hate each other and either way it would be very very funny.

it's a pretty generic opinion but i don't believe that any of his attempts at flirting with women/seeming attracted to women in canon are genuine lol. it always feels very forced and unnatural to me. that man is a deeply closeted and confused gay boy and i can't see him any other way tbh. i think he WANTS to be straight so bad but he is not. not even a little bit

one thing i wish would happen/had happened with this character in canon:

i wish his character development would stick more! like ik he has to be bitchy for the comedy and that's fine im not saying he has to suddenly be nice or whatever but it's frustrating to see him grow a little bit as a person or overcome one of his insecurities only to go back to being even worse than before in the very next episode........ he is a little more mellow in later seasons than he was in the earlier ones but not by much, and i feel like things like learning abt his real father and going off to be ace and stuff should have had a real visible impact on him instead of just. not changing anything lol

Kurt Glee Rewatch: Laryngitis

AKA: the ep with one of Kurt’s best songs. (Pink Houses, obviously XD)

Glad to see Kurt is pulling his weight with vocal warmups lol. But also, let’s appreciate that Brittany just doesn’t have a last name here? I know character wasn’t finalized yet, but I support Rachel just not knowing.

Aw, Kurt finally getting to sing a solo! Also love how Finn complains about Jesse getting all the solos when there is zero evidence of this.

Also Kurt having the same range as a castrato... iconic.

But the fact that Burt shows up at school and Kurt’s immediate response is fear. This is the before Burt’s health stuff but my boy really thought something terrible happened. Guess there’s no other logical reason for Burt to visit? 

And this scene breaks my heart. Love Burt, but he’s still of the ‘let’s each do our own thing’ mindset. One of my fav aspects of Kurt’s character is how close he is to his dad. How even when they don’t spend much time together, Burt is still his most important person bc for so long they only had each other. And my heart just cannot take it.

I just love watching the reactions in this scene (Jenna clearly laughing here). Apparently this was inspired by a bit Lea Michele did of fake bad singing so the whole cast was struggling not to laugh.

But legit I love the Kurt and Sue dynamic so much. And I do love Sue’s line of him liking showtunes not equating being gay. Like, yes Kurt is gay, but it gets so tied up with the rest of his personality. Lowkey, with the s1 arc of Kurt being gay... there’s a bit of Kurt’s crush on Finn? But mainly the ‘problem’ of him being gay is about his clothes/etc. Later, when Blaine goes here, he’s def not bullied as much? Prob partly bc Kurt fought so hard to change the school, but maybe Blaine was more ‘passing’. 

And that frustrates me. Like obvs homophobia is bad (hot take, I know) but the jokes etc are rarely about Kurt gay as liking boys. Tbh the jokes are more in sexism/toxic masculinity bc the jokes and comments are about Kurt being effeminate and more camp. Like, what if Kurt were straight but still acted like that? What if he were gay but was more stereotypically masc?

Idk, I just have a lot of thoughts about this. Esp as even after Kurt’s out, accepted by his friends, there are still lots of jokes about him being ‘girly’ and they bug me. Esp as Kurt... isn’t as ‘girly’ as ppl make him out to be? I go into it a lot in my fashion analysis of him but s1 is the most fem-leaning he dresses and even still it’s... not that fem. I’ll def rant more about this later, as topic comes up more.

Iconic look. And when he tries to ‘butch’ it up he doesn’t dress like jock or the other guys at school. He specifically imitates his dad and my poor sweet Kurt. 

Thinking Pink Houses is about bold interior design is such a move. We get way less of this humour in later seasons (mainly bc Glee tries to be more serious and is way less fun)

Can we also appreciate how Burt clearly sees something is up but he still supports Kurt? He’s afraid of losing his dad, but Burt is never openly neglecting Kurt and would easily drop everything. It’s really just how easy Finn and Burt connect and Kurt wants that same thing, that more casual relationship when conversations with his dad all seem so hard.

Also I’d love to see how that convo went when they got burgers. Did they talk Mellencamp the whole time? Did Kurt learn some fishing facts or something??

I love Jessie’s Girl (one of Finn’s best songs) and Kurt def doesn’t react to it as much as Hello I Love You. I really think that by this point his crush is fizzling out. Esp as he’s focusing more on the situation with his dad.

I love that we’re still in baby!Kurt era but he as this angry affect to help sell the number. Also, Love when he gets to sing in his lower register, and omg the growling is so fun. And I love how right before singing you can see a hint of nervousness on him, poor sweetie

And the reactions! Will’s just like ‘wtf’ and Finn is genuinely into it (he’s just so supportive of Kurt, love to see), Artie and Rachel are just like what is going on?? And I love Rachel’s super halfhearted clap at the end.

I do find it odd that Kurt is clearly going through something and... nobody talks to him? There’s a bit from Schue after the number but like... where is Mercedes? Or could’ve given Tina some lines for once, have her talk to him.

This is one of the very few convos Kurt and Schue have and I understand Kurt being unfazed bc Schue tries to build Kurt up... after repeatedly never supporting his talent. I still say there’s should’ve been a scene in Wheels of Schue talking to Kurt, praising what he did well, etc. Like gosh, isn’t he a teacher?

Anyway, love the gay panic when Brittany offers to make out. I do find it interesting how when Kurt tries to bond with his dad, he didn’t change his sexuality. Again, the ‘problems’ were with his appearance and interests. Kurt had said to Sue that he was worried his sexuality was causing distance with his dad, but I think the main strain is from other stuff (his love for theatre and fashion etc)

I also think that Brittany’s offer here is partly a chance for Kurt to keep up his new charade, but maybe he also considers experimenting a bit. He said it he was sure in Preggers but hey, can’t hurt to try.

Did Kurt specifically set out these candles for while he kisses Brittany? Bc lol. (also has anyone seen the BTS where CHris mentions being told he was ‘too good’ at this scene and needed to look more like he didn’t know what he was doing, Iconic)

And him asking what boys lips taste like, awe sweetie

Find it weird he just lets them resume making out? But I guess he’s pretty sure they won’t really do anything. The doorhanger suggests it was more just so Burt would catch them.

This is also clearly an indication that Kurt is gay bc otherwise Brittany would totally be his type. He loves that clueless type (Finn, sorta Sam, Blaine who is hella oblivious). Omg, the real reason it didn’t work with Adam: he was way too smart.

I love how this song is kinda similar to Pink Houses with the anger, the lower voice, even in this song he does a bit of a growl at the start. But damn, what a difference.

I love how so many of Kurt’s solos are about his dad. This, hold your hand, even wheels was connected to that plot. 

ANd this song. I mean, it’s been said a million times. One of his best in the series. The amount of frustration and intensity I just. It’s so good. And that sing/scream at the end holy crap.

I get it’s for the moment with his dad, but lowkey upset he didn’t get to sing this for the club, show how freaking talented he really is.

Damn, early series Kurt was so soft and sweet and emotional. Kurt stays sweet, but he gets so hardened by the crap he goes through and he’s rarely as open and vulnerabl. Like, even s1 he represses, but not as much as later. Def not as successfully.

I love Burt so much. I will never say it enough. I love how he’s allowed to have flaws, to have to readjust to Kurt, who was not what he’d planned.

And I like how Burt calls Kurt out on the “didn’t know I was a disappointment” bc they both know that’s not what he meant.

I can’t watch this scene without tearing up. Also, def more of crew learning how great a crier Chris Colfer is bc ooh boy will we get more. Burt’s expression when Kurt says how easy it is with Finn, how it breaks his heart. 

And we’ve already seen how Kurt really took up the caretaker role, how he wants to make things easier for his dad, so ofc Kurt would also work hard, try to change himself to connect with his dad.

And I love that Burt immediately puts a stop to that bc Kurt is the son and he shouldn’t have to change who he is. Obvs Burt loves Kurt and would do anything for him, but I think this is def a turning point where he realizes that they can connect beyond that. Like, burt can accept Kurt, but he can also make the effort to learn about what Kurt’s interests (we see how much he learns about theatre as the show goes on) and this is where Burt does away with the ‘you do your thing, I do mine’ perspective on their relationship.

And I love that for them. I love them so much. I live this ep so much. Why do I love a show that I hate so much???

That’s fair! Your characterizations are some of my favorite. Butch outside of Buttercup is an enigma, especially when you ignore widely accepted fanon (which, don’t even get me started on how horrible it is that he’s been reduced to ‘violent perv’🙄). I like to think Butch is the type to just be quiet and -depending on who you are and what the subject i- listen. A big part of his journey would probably be finding his voice. I don’t necessarily think he’s smart, but I also don’t think he’s stupid. Somewhere between an average C or B student. I like to think he goes into something that requires him to focus on his hands. Maybe a mechanic? Something that keeps him busy and occupied. It’s probably why Bubbles loves having him paint her nails. Maybe lots of heavy lifting too. Blossom does appreciate it when he helps her carry her school work. He’s probably the type that is quiet but is never still. He has to keep busy because he doesn’t share his thoughts, but he doesn’t like being the only one who has them, hence the finding his voice. It’s something he works on over time, an arc where he finds the proper outlets to explore what he’s thinking without necessarily having to open up to everyone. It’s here that most people just pair him up with Buttercup and have her ‘suffer’ through him because counterparts! Who better to get it than my somewhat opposite? But I think it’d be even better if his first approach is either one of the other girls or his brothers. Depending on the fic one might be thinking of, a trusted adult would be great too. Hell, I like to think it’s be Robin of all people, because let’s face it our fave norm went through it😔. But yeah, these are just some thoughts I have about him because I really love that loser. I don’t even know if these count as part of a characterization if I’m being honest. Maybe headcanons? If that.

And I so agree with you. I hate the violent perv schtick he's stuck with, and while I recognize that in canon, the boys are pieces of shit (they *are* bad guys), and they may have been looking at a porn mag (what teenager hasn't?) in that clips episode (that has singlehandedly done more damage to this fandom than any other episode), this characterization of him totally ignores how Butch seemed to be hyperactive, fun-loving, silly, dirty little kid who liked roughhousing and fooling around with his brothers in the show/comics.

As a fandom, we can allow him to mature. He can still be a piece of shit. He can still like porn. Who cares. But the violent perv thing? I think we can move past it unless the story calls for it, ig??? Idk it just gets old pretty fast and falls into those typical "hyper-masculine" roles that, if you're trying to make a story where you are redeeming the boys as heroes, would need to be slowly written out of Butch's character. If you're keeping him a piece of shit, then go for it, but Buttercup would absolutely not be attracted to it, and that's why I think I don't like it. I always see this kind of characterization when he's shipped with one of the girls, and it ends up being more detrimental to the girl's character than to his.

I love love love how you characterize him as someone trying to find himself as an individual. I like playing with that idea, especially with "middle" siblings like Butch and Buttercup. It's honestly perfect. Like maybe he's just lost for a while, and someone has to look at him and be like, "listen, sure, things are different now, and you don't know who you really are outside of being evil, but look at all the good you've done just by being there!" And the view pans to Bubbles happy with her nails painted, and Blossom snuggled in next to her new bookshelves, and maybe, the Professor's engine doesn't make that clunking noise anymore!

I also subscribe to Butch being the quiet sibling, but solely because he’s the brother with the least amount of lines in the show. Haha idk also big middle sibling mood for those who are only children. At least, my middle brother is quiet, me and my youngest brother talk for him lol. he’s too sweet to really be like Butch tho😂

Actually prefers that you’re a sniper, makes it easier for you to stay hidden and out of a fight since your whole gig is to take out without being seen. But he does realize the disadvantage when you get pummeled into the ground and he couldn’t get to you right away because you were almost too far away. First of all, it was not “one instance of dressing like a girl”. Otherwise I’d headcanon the entire male empires cast as some form of transfem (remember that party lol). Which AGAIN leads me to wonder if you’re this harsh on the millions of transfem grian headcanoners? Because (and anyone can expand on it if they want) it looks like it’s just that one instance of Ariana Griande that caused the hc? Which, as I literally said in the post, I don’t share that headcanon, so it’s again REALLY WEIRD that you’re accusing me of seeing a man dress feminine once and headcanoning them as a trans woman when you literally JUST saw me NOT doing that.

It’s like… you said you love transfem headcanons, but then how are YOU making them? Because like… do you think you can only make transfem headcanons when they NEVER dress femininely? You can only headcanon it with NO BASIS otherwise it’s claiming that men who dress femininely must all secretly be women? Like yes I’m aware there are other things characters can do to make you think that, but you GOTTA ADMIT that liking feminine things IS ONE OF THEM. And that can coexist with “some men like feminine things and aren’t women at all”.

You know what the normal thing to say would’ve been? “I personally see Joel as just a guy who likes to be feminine sometimes”. And I would’ve said “yes!!! Absolutely!!!” because A) I’m chill like that B) my headcanons aren’t universal even to myself and C) like I said my headcanon was that he was a man AND a woman so I ALSO see him as a man that dresses femininely. He is just also sometimes a woman that dresses masculinely. Or a feminine woman or a masculine man. I like to think he would mix it up a lot for fun. But again my headcanon is that he’s closeted so maybe not 😭

It almost feels to me like maybe the problem is that it’s Joel? I don’t want to make assumptions about you, but like, idk maybe Joel’s masculinity is really important to you or something and the fact that he has his characters wear dresses sometimes while still identifying as a man brings you some sort of comfort. I get that, I am a trans guy who enjoys feminine things. So maybe my headcanon felt like an attack on that idea. But it’s not. You can’t just assume the worst of people. If someone told me they can’t see Joel as anything other than a cis man then as long as it’s not accusatory like your message then I would be like “cool! I can see that!”

I understand what you were getting at, of course. It is suspicious if someone headcanons every single guy who dresses femininely as a girl… but that’s the thing, you saw ONE of my headcanons that was like that and decided that I do that all the time??? It’s ONLY suspicious if it’s EVERY TIME okay. And also let people have fun lol, this doesn’t really mean anything.

If we start making a bunch of rules and requirements in order to have transfem headcanons then it’ll start to be like those headcanons aren’t allowed at all. If you REALLY loved transfem headcanons you’d let people make them on a whim, because it shouldn’t be controversial. You shouldn’t scrutinize everyone who has that headcanon.

And TRUST ME, I get it. I have OCD, as do a lot of people who fall into these traps. You get told that something ultimately harmless and at worst mildly questionable is a huge moral failing and you freak out. You feel like a bad person. because to me the implication looks like, well. in this hypothetical that we’re playing with, where we can call the doctor a lesbian for fun but flinch from the doctor, you know, interacting romantically with another lesbian, then it feels like it’s only the aesthetics of the label that were important at all. the gender exploration feels more shallow the minute you go, right, but not with bill, because bill is a real lesbian. the doctor can’t be. the doctor is only a lesbian so far as it is funny to claim this old man could be one, so far as it isn’t too challenging.

(which is not to say that you should be making bill/twelve your priority number one ship or even that it actually enhances the text to think about their relationship romantically. i mean, i don’t ship it. i’m just making a point here. that it’s a weird line to draw in the sand, when everyone loves to talk about twelve’s gender, twelve’s lesbian vibes.)

there’s a certain level of genderweirdness that is acceptable to put onto characters. this guy is a lesbian, you can just tell from his vibes. the lady’s the gayest man i’ve ever seen on television. but don’t go too far there. don’t take the next step, push it into ‘hey, but what if they are, really’. because then, well, you’re encroaching on the territory of real gay characters. as if some minor speculation could change what’s in a show filmed and aired years ago. as if it causes any harm to say what-if.

because at the end of the day, the brick wall remains that twelve is still too much of a man to be a lesbian. it’s fine for jokes, light-hearted banter! but a complex gender? even in a fictional alien? and by this, we also bar other ways for bill and twelve to relate to each other, because if he’s too close to masculinity for pairing them up, then he’s too close to be an older queer mentor, too.

maybe this doesn’t make any sense. but i think it’d just be nice to have a little more embracing of genuine genderweirdness, not as a joke but as an actual thought exercise. and to not play in that space without feeling like you’re being watched for the minute you go a little too far in exploring how messy a character’s gender can be. because. i mean. if their gender isn’t allowed outside a box, what about the rest of us? where does that leave real multigender people, nonbinary people, people who just can’t slot in neatly to a comfortable label?

I watched the school for good and evil or whatever it's called last night and i am just so conflicted and confused and confounded.

note, this is coming from someone who has never read these books. I think this is the type of series i wouldve devoured in 7th grade though

The premise is borderline dystopian. These kids are being separated into either good or evil, no inbetween, with extremely rigid but also arbitrary rules as to what is good and what is evil. there's no room for change or growth, you're either one or the other for the rest of your life.

agatha and sophia, the protagonists, are upset with this. sophia thinks she's not meant for the evil school, there's been a mistake, and agatha (who is infinitely more likeable throughout the entirety of the movie) just wants to go back to her home to take care of her mother.

as i was watching the scene early on where all the students are separated, and the good boys come out and do all the sword tricks, i sorta came to a realization.

this is a queer allegory, right? am i insane for thinking that? like, this is just But I'm a Cheerleader. the way the boys and girls in the school for good are separated to strictly, forced into these masculine or feminine roles, it's almost satirical.

and the whole movie is satirical, right? it feels like it's trying to be, at least. it's sorta campy and very clearly poking fun at these fairy tale cliches. which can be annoying sometimes, like in Enchanted, but i think this movie does a good enough job of embracing the absurdity of it all without coming off as down-right laughable and corny.

however i still thought there were problems with the tone of the film. they're trying to balance this whimsical, quirky fantasy story with like, high-stakes mature aspects that don't work very well imo. like, a kid gets turned into a bird monster and then killed by another kid who doesnt recognize the monster as him. the kid just dies. this other kid, tedros, just murdered an innocent person. but the story really wants you to like tedros, and really wants agatha to like tedros (even though shes clearly a lesbian but I'll get into that later....) so he never faces any meaningful consequences and never meaningfully changes. agatha is mad at him for like, two scenes.

another example is the weird "love" going on between sophia and the centuries-old evil big bad guy. was this necessary? could he not have just been manipulative and creepy without passionately making out with her in the climax? the actor even looks older than her, the character is supposed to be immortal and young but he looks like hes in his early-to-mid twenties while sophia is clearly a teenager. and im not saying that just because the movie is depicting this sort of relationship, that makes the movie problematic or anything. I'm saying it really, really does not fit in with the tone of the movie. depicting this sort of predatory relationship in a movie for teenagers could be really good, a way to warn the younger audience about relationships with older partners, but that requires much more commentary and critique than this film is even allowed to provide. the movie is already TWO AND A HALF HOURS LONG, adding in a subplot about an abusive predatory relationship wouldve just overstuffed it even more. so why even bother if you're just going to half-ass it? what's the point? to make the story more mature? it's about fairy tales and folklore and a magic school, it doesn't have to be dark and edgy.

but at least, i said as i was watching it, they were still seemingly trying to critique all of these things. I kept watching, hoping that this would all be resolved, and they would come to the obvious conclusion that separating children into these two factions benefits nobody and the whole concept should be gotten rid of. and also, sophia and agatha should kiss.

the entire movie these two were in love, i swear I'm not pulling this out of my ass. the way that they only ever had each other, and they were always doing things for each other, and they always had each other in mind. the movie sets up this whole idea of true love's kiss, and in typical young adult fantasy fashion sophia scrambles to find a guy to magically fall in love with, and agatha helps her. and it just felt so clear to me that logically sophia should just kiss agatha. all of this movie's sins would have been forgiven, if it was just sapphic.

and guess what. they do kiss. in the most unsatisfying way possible.

in the climax, evil big bad makes out with sophia, and the whole school starts to be destroyed and it's the apocalypse or whatever, and agatha comes to save sophia, obviously. evil big bad tries to impale agatha with a giant magic quill, sophia pushes agatha out of the way and gets impaled instead. tedros tries to kill evil big bad with excalibur, fails. sophia, with her last ounce of strength, levitates the sword into agatha's hands so she can slay the evil big bad, and agatha succeeds. agatha goes to sophia, bleeding out on the ground, cries over her dying body. sophia confesses her love for agatha, agatha reciprocates. AGATHA KISSES SOPHIA ON THE LIPS. SOPHIA IS REVIVED BY TRUE LOVES KISS. I was ecstatic.

and then.. sophia calls agatha her best friend. sophia offers to leave agatha at the school with tedros and watch over agatha's mother for her. agatha almost agrees, goes over to tedros and fully kisses him on the lips, then says she cant leave her best friend. the movie says "what's greater than the love between two best friends". they go back home, holding hands. I'm devastated.

they don't get rid of the schools for good and evil. at the end, theyre just switched, and they just decide it's okay for good students and evil students to be friends.

and that's the movie. in a word, disappointing. it couldve been so much more, it set up all these cool things, all of the pieces were there, but in the end they just ended up scrambling the whole puzzle. it's just so frustrating. I'm sure someone else could give a much better analysis of the things this movie gets wrong, and a tumblr post probably isnt the best outlet for this sort of thing, but I had to put this somewhere. if you actually read this far, thanks, if you read this far and you still love the movie, thank you sincerely for listening to my ramble.

Not only do characters have to learn the same lesson twice people around them really never have to change. If anything people who gave Wanda a chance and showed empathy are made wrong. No one has to treat Loki better and reevaluate how outsiders are treated. No one is there for Thor when he constantly spiraling because of grief and depression. No self care, healing or empathy. It's always a toughen up, get over it and sacrifice your own well-being for others is the central theme I'm getting here.

Ain't that the damn truth.

We can see it in how they handle the characters who go through a rough patch: if they do it the proper "masculine" way of booze+violence they're not held accountable and the narrative tries to paint them as good guys with a past not worth addressing (Stark and as much as it pains me to say it... Valkyrie) but the characters who don't go through that process are either considered weak or lesser than and the story is about them toughing up or taking responsibility for their and other people's actions (Bucky, Loki, Thor).

Where Stark and Valkyrie get away with what they did, Bucky is told to make amends even though none of what he did was his fault, Loki is ignored and never allowed to give his side of the story and the NYC invasion will always define him and justify the abuse thrown his way, and Thor is made fun of and mocked at every turn and in his own movie he's given someone else to care for, all his issues go unaddressed and no one is there for him.

And you're certainly right that it feels the only purpose of those around them is to joke around and tell them to "get over it", very rarely they get a word of encouragement or some acknowledgement of their troubles... and when they do the characters showing compassion are blamed for babying and coddling them or worse, justifying their mistakes (like all the hate towards Monica in WV for trying to be understanding with Wanda).

There's very little emotional availability in these movies and shows. I still remember Rocket slapping Thor in the face in the middle of a panic attack and Loki calling himself a narcissist in the middle of a beating that is framed good for him and Bucky calling Hydra "my people" and visiting the families of the victims like he had any agency whatsoever in what he did and I just...... how can these writers be so clueless. "Toughen up, be a man, don't show vulnerability or we will make you suffer"... it's so cruel.
