All that is for naught when Carl shows up (courtesy of Val calling him) and admitting the deed (‘a stupid fling’). Hurting with what happened with Carl, Chas tells Aaron she doesn’t like him, her own son. Well, that prompts Aaron to want to go home sooner and final harsh words from both mother and son in the last scene.

Este año, mi apuesta ha sido algo más sencilla —Señora mía, o vuestra apenas se puede comparar con Dulce y salvaje Hibernia, ni siquiera en palabras o temas a tratar—, pero ha sido una combinación de varias ideas que me llevaban persiguiendo desde hace bastante tiempo.

Y sí, añadí lo de Alfonso XII en el post sobre las epidemias de cólera morbo en España a modo de explicación de lo que se venía. Bueno, para qué mentir, todo lo que escribí fue a modo de nota para hoy.

Aunque no trate ningún tema que relacione a Irlanda con España históricamente en ese momento —más que nada una simple mención sobre el resultado de las elecciones de 1885 en Irlanda, porque al parecer en este año tenía que pasar de todo—, me gusta enlazarlo con los capítulos finales del último fic publicado de P.I.G.S. con todo el tema del cólera, porque se me había quedado la espinita clavada de cuando lo escribí.

Y Portugal simplemente tiene que aparecer en todo esto.

Al igual que México e Irlanda.

Hacedme caso.

Estoy arrancando motores.

Ya veréis después de la Hetaberia Week 2024 (si me da la gana de ponerme en serio con el fic y puede llegar este mismo año a pesar de su extensión).

For St Patrick's Day?  "Hanging at two of our favorite Irish pubs, drinking Guinness and Jameson, and listening to some great Irish bands. We constantly have Celtic music on in our house and we are planning a trip to Ireland this summer.  Our trip three years ago got squashed due to the pandemic."

This St. Patrick's Day, the podcast is really my only connection to Celtic culture, so I'll be spending the evening listening with my kids. Over the years of listening, I have moved from the US to rural Japan, where there is no other access to my Irish roots. I have to travel to even find Guinness on tap. But thanks to you, my kids have picked up on Celtic music (or "Daddy's car music", as they call it) and even recognize it when some of the common themes find their way into movie or game music. St Patrick's for us will be attending play centre (a parent run education centre) where we will be making shamrock fairy bread.( green sprinkles on buttered bread cut out with a cookie cutter) quite a conglomeration of celtic and new zealand cultures. In questi giorni mi sto tenendo aggiornata sulla scomparsa presunta del delfino Fungie, conosciuto anche come Dingle Dolphin. Da diverse settimane non è stato più avvistato nella baia di Dingle, un piccolo paese situato a Ovest dell’Irlanda il che risulta una situazione molto anomala in quanto l’animale ha sempre ospitato le acque baia per ben 37 anni. La Dingle Dolphin Tours, dopo aver ricevuto la notizia che il delfino non era più presente nei dintorni della baia di Dingle, si è subito mobilitata per svolgere ricerche in mare nella speranza di avvistarlo nuovamente, ma tutti i tentativi che sono stati compiuti fino ad oggi sono sempre andati a vuoto. Io incrocio le dita, sperando che Fungie si sia allontanato temporaneamente ma non sono molto ottimista a riguardo poiché l’animale aveva già intorno ai 40 anni di età.

Infatti, Fungie fu avvistato per la prima volta nel lontano 1983 proprio in quella baia. E da allora, non lasciò più quel tratto di mare e diventò molto amato non solo dalla popolazione locale, ma anche conosciuto a livello internazionale a tal punto che il delfino diventò una vera e propria attrazione turistica. Ed è proprio questo il dettaglio che non ho potuto fare a meno di notare, ovvero come la presenza di Fungie fosse diventata essenziale non soltanto a livello turistico, ma soprattutto economico: i turisti infatti venivano da ogni parte del globo per vederlo saltare a pochi centimetri dalle loro facce o fare balzi sorprendenti mostrandosi in tutta la sua imponenza ed eleganza. Ma ora che la baia di Dingle è vuota senza la frizzante presenza di Fungie, e sapendo bene che ora il delfino, forse, non tornerà (niente Fungie = niente turisti) mi chiedo cosa escogiteranno i cittadini di Dingle dopo che per anni hanno lucrato a spese di un animale selvatico, contribuendo a sconvolgere l’equilibrio della sua vera natura.

E qui parte l’ipocrisia di fondo. Mi spiego meglio: se tu compri un biglietto per andare a visitare un parco marino per vedere i delfini vieni etichettato come uno stronzo che non ama gli animali. Se invece vai a Dingle, compri un biglietto per andare in barca a vedere Fungie allora ti lodano per aver fatto ciò che è giusto, ovvero vedere un delfino nel suo habitat sorvolando su quanto la piccola popolazione di Dingle ci abbia lucrato sopra questo tursiope.

Un altro caso molto simile è quello di Dusty, una delfina che risiede nelle acque di County Clare, a Doolin in Irlanda, dai primi anni 2000 e anche nel suo caso ci sono sub che non esitano a entrare in acqua con lei e farsi il selfie di turno per poi pubblicarlo su Instagram (es. @georgekarbus sul suo profilo Instagram troverete numerose foto di lui che interagisce in compagnia di Dusty), senza tenere conto che la delfina ha aggredito numerose volte in passato i bagnanti anche in modo violento, a tal punto da arrivare a rompere loro le ossa! Neanche Fungie si è dimostrato altrettanto amichevole nei confronti dei suoi tanto cari quanto invadenti visitatori umani, tant’è che anche lui ha manifestato segni di aggressività e violenza se qualcuno entrava in acqua per interagire con lui. Il perché di questa aggressività da parte di Dusty una ragione c’è: per la delfina, la presenza umana non è indispensabile poiché, a differenza di Fungie, Dusty è una delfina con un’identità ben marcata. Non è un tursiope stanziale ma si sposta più volte e regolarmente in vari tratti di mare e ha interazioni con altri delfini.

Nel 2013, Dusty attaccó in modo molto violento una natante, tant’è vero che la vittima subí lesioní grave ai reni poiché Dusty l’aveva colpita diverse volte con il suo rostro!

La storia di Fungie - così come quella di Dusty - dovrebbe farci riflettere su come, ancora una volta, l’uomo è sempre pronto a interferire con gli equilibri della natura ma soprattutto con le loro identità. Ora, moltissimi abitanti a Dingle sperano che Fungie ritorni nella baia. Se veramente Fungie se n’è andato, la scelta più saggia che la popolazione locale possa fare è quello di lasciarlo andare. Noi siamo sempre stati degli ospiti per questi animali tanto affascinanti quanto misteriosi e sempre lo saremo e non bisogna mai dimenticare che quando noi andiamo in escursione in mare aperto, noi entriamo in casa loro. Sono loro i padroni di casa, non noi. Bisognerebbe imparare a rispettare le loro scelte senza intromettersi nei loro istinti e senza cadere, come sempre, nell’antropomorfismo.

¡Hoy: Bobui “en concierto”!

Hoy, 22 de mayo a las 21:00, Bobui (desde México) transmitirá en vivo para amenizar un poco la cuarentena mientras disfrutamos de su música. Este grupo de indie rock está conformado -desde 2018- por los hermanos Borja, Enzo y Carlos, originarios de la ciudad Colima, México.

Conversamos un poco con Carlos; luego de que nos explicara qué significa “andar de friega”, en español mexicano, nos contó sobre los inicios de Bobui.

Bobui va a cumplir apenas dos años. Pero mi hermano y yo ya siempre hemos tocado juntos. Siempre ha sido rock, pero se ha transformado poco a poco. Teníamos una banda que se llamaba Lawall, tocamos desde el 2013 al 2017, más o menos. Hicimos una gira nacional y algunos videos, fue como nuestro primer acercamiento a la música, fue la primera búsqueda importante y en la que obtuvimos respuestas sobre sonidos, letras y estilo musical. Luego Bobui, es la suma de todas esas experiencias, una etapa diferente.

De México han salido bandas de rock muy importantes para Latinoamérica, ¿cómo ha sido la experiencia de conocer la escena, trabajar con estos músicos e incluso producir con Bacter (de Porter)?

Para nosotros, por venir de una de las ciudades más pequeñas del país, es muy estimulante y muy importante conocer todo el movimiento, estudios de grabación (en Ciudad de México, en Guadalajara) y sobretodo, músicos profesionales a los que admiramos, con los que hemos aprendido y ahora trabajado.

El disco, Pascuales (por una playa de Colima) , se produjo con dos personas. Bacter produjo “Hey chica” y otra canción que está por salir. Alan Santos (Centavrvs), produjo el resto del disco. Estamos muy orgullosos, porque es un paso más allá de lo habíamos hecho anteriormente a nivel instrumental.

Pascuales tiene este nombre, reflejado en una playa del Estado de Colima: mar abierto y aguas profundas. Una analogía que invita a sumergirse en esta búsqueda de nuevos sonidos, junto a Bobui. “Hey Chica”, la primera canción del disco, ya se encuentra en las plataformas digitales de la banda. Es una balada, dream pop, con increíbles solos de guitarra. El video fue producido por Alexis Gómez y Clare Dingle.

Como género, es difícil de definir; igual nos encanta lo que entendemos por “indie”. Al inicio fue una referencia de música independiente y así la hacemos, pero la búsqueda de cada músico es más interesante. Mi hermano es muy enérgico (el baterista), es melódico y su búsqueda va hacia esa parte. Yo (voz) soy más de acordes, de ecos, de delays, de letras. Él trae la energía, yo llevo la parte más relajada, incluso melancólica.

Por otro lado, valoro mucho el rock en español, soy fan de Spinetta, Charly, Café Tacuba, de bandas que exploran muy bien y me hacen sentir orgulloso del lenguaje.

Las letras de Bobui son bastante relajadas, algunas veces, melancólicas. Proponen puntos de vista para reflexionar, pero de una manera bastante sutil. Carlos comenta que, por ejemplo, “Agua Santa” (2019) habla del valor del agua, pero bien podrías dedicar esta canción a alguien que quieres. Bobui deja abierto siempre un espacio para la interpretación propia.

La próxima canción del disco Pascuales es “Cabana”, también maneja una letra reflexiva, y tiene acordes de Bossanova. Carlos nos dice que esperemos una canción que se sienta como una buena charla con amigos.

Dingle

«Dingle, o Dhaingean Uí Chúis, es un pueblo situado en la península del mismo nombre, cuyas costas son bañadas por el océano Atlántico. Pertenece al condado de Kerry, en la provincia de Munster, situada en el suroeste de la isla de Irlanda.»

Tras la Invasión normada de Irlanda —finales del siglo XII—, el pueblo se desarrollaría como un puerto. Un siglo después, habría superado a Limerick en número de exportaciones, lo que obligaría a Enrique III de Inglaterra a establecer controles en 1257.

Durante el siglo XIV la importación del vino cobró una gran importancia, hasta el punto de que la autoridad local de la época, el Primer Conde de Desmond, Maurice FitzGerald, tuvo que regular el comercio mediante un impuesto.

La localidad era uno de los principales puertos de comercio, exportación de peces e importación de vinos del continente europeo; normalmente desde España y Francia. En el siglo XVI, flotas de pescadores españoles y franceses utilizarían el pueblo como una base.

Otra cosa a destacar es que también resultaba el principal puerto para embarcar hacia Santiago de Compostela desde la isla.

Las conexiones de esta zona con España eran tan fuertes que este fue el primer lugar de Irlanda en recibir una misión diplomática desde la España de Carlos I. Sucedió, tal como conmemora la placa, el 28 de abril de 1529, cuando aún se creía en España que Inglaterra era confiable.

La operación estuvo presidida por González Fernández, el embajador plenipotenciario enviado por el Rey de España que, según se dice, fue recibido por un redoble de tambores ceremonial.

El denominado Tratado de Dingle fue firmado entre él y el Decimoprimer Conde de Desmond, James Fitzgerald, que el propio embajador español describió de la siguiente manera: «El conde tiene entre 30 y 40 años y su altura está bastante por encima de la media. Mantiene mejor la justicia en sus dominios que cualquier otro jefe en Irlanda. Los que cometen robos y homicidios no encuentran piedad y a sus perpetradores se les corta la mano. Sus gentes tienen gran orden y disciplina, y poseen arcos cortos y espadas. La propia guardia del Conde está armada de pies a cabeza y porta alabardas. También tiene caballos, y algunos de estos sabe incluso cómo romper una lanza. Montan de una manera admirable; sin silla ni estribos.»

Este acuerdo sirvió como base legal para los derechos de ciudadanía y otros privilegios que los exiliados y emigrantes irlandeses disfrutaron más tarde en todos los territorios de los Habsburgo; España, Austria y los Países Bajos españoles (Bélgica y Luxemburgo) desde el siglo XVI hasta el siglo XIX (firma del Tratado de Unión de 1801), aunque algunos dicen hasta el XX.

La península también sería escenario del sitio y posterior masacre de Smerwick (1580) en el escenario de la Segunda Rebelión Desmond (1579-1583), en el que entre 400 y 700 soldados enviados por el Papa, de origen español e italiano, tenían la labor de reunirse con un ejército de 4000 rebeldes, liderados por en ese entonces Conde de Desmond, Gerald Fitzgerald. Los ingleses llegaron antes que los irlandeses, asediaron a la guarnición papal —junto a la población local—, en el fuerte de Dún an Óir y, tras una rendición que los españoles aceptaron a regañadientes creyendo en las condiciones de los ingleses, la gran mayoría fueron ejecutados.

El lugar en el que se realizó dicha matanza recibió el nombre de Gort a Ghearradh (Campo de Corte) y, según se dice, las cabezas se acumularon en el Gort nag Ceann (Campo de las Cabezas) mientras los cuerpos se arrojaban al mar.

Como último detalle relacionado con Dingle, mencionar que la placa del principio fue inaugurada contando con la embajadora española en Irlanda del momento, Mercedes Rico —porque los embajadores españoles en Irlanda siempre tiene una gran actividad, por lo que veo. En el acto fue recibida, de manera similar a su homólogo más de cuatro siglos atrás —480 años, concretamente—, por la Dingle Fife and Drum Band.

La Dingle Historical Society fue la encargada de la invitación y del acto.

[R]: Tbh, I’ve been having some of the same thoughts, and I’m kinda missing the higher definition muscles (I initially meant to drown them out cause they could be a bit much by default, hence the name) but I’ll definitely tweak at some point to accommodate higher muscle definition :)
