Weiss: We've only gone twelve rounds! (Flips them over so she's riding top) I am not losing to your sister! Now, chug this pot of coffee and get ready!

-Across the Hall: Dragula plays in the background-

Blake: (panting and covered in hickeys and various fluids as she stares down at Yang) Come on, Baby! We’re only on round twenty! We still got ten to go!

Yang: (shotguns energy drink and crushes the can against her head. Her eyes are burning crimson, and her hair is starting to spark. She throws the can against the door, causing it to wedge itself into the cracked wood. No longer capable of coherent thoughts or words. Just feral growls and snarls as she flips them over and presses Blake face down into the mattress)

Blake: Note to self: Yang goes feral at round fifteen~~

I think L gave us a lot of hints/messages about what might be going on post-premiere in that Jimmy F appearance. Let’s note that this was after Papgate, after his and N’s social media posts in the fallout period, and after Milan if I am remember correctly? The more I think about it the more I think his team crafted the content we saw to reset his public image, explain some things, and encourage the audience to give him some grace. It was damage control/positive PR/but also some explanations for what we are seeing.

First off, he came off relaxed and confident, a big contrast from how stressed he looked when he had been papped. I think they were also trying to portray him as a friendly and relatable regular guy who had suddenly been thrust into fame as a heartthrob and romantic lead.

Him running from the carriage scene music/talking about how he is not used to the level of fame and exposure and recognition that has come with the success of the show (barber story, needing security in Brazil).

The reference to JB passing down the guide that was called “How to fall in love in front of 82 million people” - more messaging that it is difficult to have that level of scrutiny and specifically when playing a romantic lead when you have insane chemistry with your costar.

The romantic lines, read B-ton style (these are so L/N coded and reference things L or N have brought up in interviews, with the exception of “East Peasy Lemon Squeezy.) We’ve got:

Espresso lyrics - song with significance to the ship, also what L was listening to getting ready for the London premiere, Honeybee, come get that pollen lyrics

“Penelope, we were on a break!” -this is the biggest hint right here of why L was papped/appears in a relationship with another woman after we have seen his and N’s chemistry jump off the screen for 6 months and also in the show itself. THEY (N/L) WERE ON A BREAK. I don’t think he wanted to be on a break, but they were, and I think they’re now on another one while he tries to get his affairs in order. And note that he says “Penelope,” not Rachel, which would be the accurate pop culture quote. Which doesn’t really make sense because he and P are never on a break during the show unless you count the time she stops writing to him and he goes off the rails. Penelope is code for N. Also he is referencing the R/R relationship/timing issues again.

Then the Barbie quote. I think this somewhat addresses him being attached to a strong beautiful powerful woman (LWD or N, take your pick) and that dynamic of potentially being overshadowed and having to find your own self worth in order to handle it . I don’t think that last part about being her Ken was scripted (JF even gives him a wtf look and then it gets cut when it airs), but he made it clear he is happy being her Ken. He basically claims his ass as hers on National TV without meaning to.

I think the interview didn’t have purposeful mention of N for a reason, he was trying to emphasize his role as a B-bro and an actor and romantic lead in his own right, and connect him to the other male leads, and the clip they chose showed that.

He then follows up with a social media post confirming a late night/non-work/non PR beach walk with N and said security guards. I mean… that was a date, and for him to post that in the face of everyone saying he had hard-launched A and he and N were “all PR” is crazy. They also have to be aware of all of the Brazil reports and speculation.

I think the messaging was: This is level of fame and exposure is new, he’s figuring it out, give him a break. Also, everything is okay between N&L so don’t worry, there may be reasons for why what we are seeing doesn’t make sense but they are figuring it out between them.

Would the general audience pick up on all of that? No, but the hardcore fans would so they layered it all in there. Maybe his PR team isn’t that dumb afterall?

I know there’s speculation N was there- I don’t know if she was but her immediate like definitely showed support and that they are still a team. Wouldn’t surprise me if she had a hand in some of that strategy.

I think this is the first in depth analysis I have ever seen on the JF appearance that I mostly agree with.

thinking about how when mariner came back to the cerritos in the s3 finale she ran and hugged boims so tight

walking right past her (presumably ex) gf, and not giving the same treatment to her other two friends

in all honestly it's not even just bc it's so shippy (though it definitely is and i do love them that way as well). i just love their friendship so fucking much. the fact that they have come so far as people from seasons 1 and 2, the way they have both been humbled by their experiences and value one another above all else.

i love lwd so much. i'm so excited for s4 and beyond.

Makes me hopeful they won't kill La'an off in the s3 premiere. I've also read that Christina has pitched ideas for s3 which makes it sound like La'an will stick around for this season. Of course they could pull a Hemmer and write her out of the show anytime, but I hope that won't happen. The show is set years before TOS, there's no need to rush to the end yet.

Thinking of potential storylines, I think it would also be a lot of fun if there was an episode in s3 featuring Betazed with the crew attending one of those legendary traditional wedding ceremonies. I googled a bit and found that Betazoids were mentioned in a DISCO novel, so timeline-wise it would be possible to have them show up in the show.

It would be hilariously awkward to watch the crew try to navigate delicate diplomacy, especially when someone as flamboyant as Lwaxana or the 3 Betazoid ladies from LWD would be there turning the wedding upsidedown. The crew would draw straws to decide who would attend the ceremony.

Imo Pike would be mostly chill about the lack of clothes because he's very comfortable in his skin, but he might also get close to fainting once he sees Una out of her uniform. M'Benga doesn't seem to have a problem with public nudity due to all the public baths during his battle days. Erica and Christine would definitely seek out the bar first.

And La'an and Spock would feel absolutely awkward and La'an would complain how she can't carry a phaser. They would try to hide behind bushes or cover themselves discreetly with the first objects they can find, like empty bowls and such. They would try to be professional and not sneak a peek at each other and fail miserably doing so. And then some Betazoid would blurt out their attraction for each other during the wedding speech... there might also be a chocolate fountain involved...

And now I realize this idea would probably work better as fanfiction because it's not very PG.

Hmmmm. That's. Hm.

Okay. I know from interviews that both Mike and Ashley felt that Dasey was inevitable and played it up. With my (incredibly slow and broken up) rewatch of LWD, the costume department was definitely doing SOMETHING.

The thing is... Were they doing it seriously or for views? Were they doing it because they believed in Dasey or because they thought it was funny? Sometimes the script itself isn't that bad, it's just the way Derek or Casey says or does a thing. But sometimes the script is... A lot.

I believe they were playing with what exactly a blended family is in the 21st Century, compared to The Brady Bunch for instance. I don't think they really anticipated Mike and Ashley's chemistry. I'm also no expert, but I can see the BigWigs seeing that there was a significant and powerful portion of their audience shipping Dasey and them leaning into it just enough to keep fans salivating so that they could make money.

(does this make me cynical? Maybe. But I am more willing to believe in the greed of Hollywood/media than in their creative abilities.)

I don't know if that answers your question, but it's really all I got. To make something like Dasey canon would be a big risk for the BigWigs, so the most I can see is them toying with it just enough to keep as many as their fans happy as they can. Whether that was by accident or on purpose... 🤷‍♀️

Lower Decks notes after watching:

RUTHERFORD my sweet summer child Rutherford. favorite character best character. baby boy.

The way I just KNOW Ransom as a character was pitched in the writers room like "Zap Brannigan if he was based on William Riker, only still juuust competent enough to be serving in Starfleet" and I love that for him. Beckett and him SHOULD bone down at least once. as a treat.

Sorry SORRY but: I am rooting for Mariner/Boimler. Its a 'When Harry Met Sally' thing okay. If you get it you get it. I give the show a 50/50 on it actually happening. Ten plus years ago it would have been a nobrainer guaranteed bet, but its current year AND Beckett has already had a girlfriend. AND plus Tendi/Rutherford already have that telegraphed endgame het feel going on. Actually I'm lowering my own odds as I type this. 30/70.

I think Jack Quaid was designed in a lab to be an actor that does nothing but complain like a sopping wet kitten. and I love that for him.

Shaxs and T'Ana are SO funny. Both individually and together.

Tendi episodes where she struggles with the expectations people have of Orions :3 ALSO the one episode where her and Beckett have a girls trip and they don't actually know each other very well. Really funny.

DS9 fanservice bait episode my beloved.

Im very excited for the Vulcan girl to be part of the cast. Her bit on the Vulcan ship was SO FUNNY. The ep with the lower decks from the other species was one of my favs.

The episode where that little robot species from next gen has sex with a bird man. I don't know that it was the most 'trek' episode but. it was definitely funny.

EDITED TO ADD: when they go back to the planet were Picard took away their drugs in tng. thank GOD. that was fanservice for me and everyone else that was annoyed with that ep.

IN CONCLUSION (before I go on too long). The first thing I see when I go into the Lower Decks tag is that there is going to be a crossover with Strange New Worlds (where Quaid and Newsome are going to play their characters in live action). And so I'm pretty sure I've been tricked in to watching snw? By virtue of lwd being fun.

I've been thinking about this post a lot and aside from the NUMEROUS comments that prove it wrong (at least partially) I do want to point out that Klingon operas are a contemporary form of media in the 24th century.

I get that the concept of "opera" calls to mind a wildly inaccessible musical genre and experience for most of us (I have seen exactly one opera in my life, many people don't even get that chance), with mostly music from previous centuries and entry tickets that cost a fortune. But in DS9 a literal Klingon opera writer is mentioned, with Martok telling Worf to go seek one out to have an opera written about his heroic deeds. It is a contemporary genre, it is widely loved by Klingons and considered a staple of Klingon culture, with studying it being mandatory in Federation schools.

It wouldn't be out of place to call Klingon operas pop culture, even. By contrast, the Klingon acid punk that gets mentioned in the comments seems like more of contemporary alt music, with punk being a term reserved for a specific kind of counterculture. Still, that is contemporary media, so it's fair to mention in this context.

So mentioning Klingon operas in a list of things that are arguably less futuristic than one would expect from people living in the 24th century (though in my opinion, the holodeck and its uses are its own form of contemporary media, kinda like fantasy novels set in medieval times) is unfair to the ongoing relevance and accessibility of the genre. Klingon opera in the 24th century is alive, it is thriving, it is popular, and it is listened to by people from all walks of life from all over the Alpha and Beta Quadrants.

(I am aware that new operas are still being written in our society as well, but that doesn't do anything to combat the general inaccessibility of the genre, making the two situations functionally incomparable.)

It does not belong in the list you mentioned, and frankly, with recorded media being as old as it is by the time of TNG/DS9/VOY/LWD, I think people would listen to it even if it wasn't still an active genre. People still listen to the Beatles, and they haven't been together since 1970. Queen is still considered one of the greatest bands of all time, and their music is still really popular, even though Freddie Mercury died over 30 years ago. Add to this another 350 years of recorded media and over 150 other species (not to mention the different cultures those species have), and what is popular and what is contemporary may simply not always overlap. But I digress.

So while I do agree with the sentiment of the post, and it would be fun to see more creativity with the different things a 24th century person might enjoy, Klingon operas are definitely a contemporary genre and do not belong on that list.

(In terms of my own suggestions: Bajoran marching/working songs, and dirges, and protest songs. Hardship is one of the biggest reasons to start singing, and by DS9 the Bajoran people are newly freed from Cardassian subjugation. How did that shape their music?)

My one problem with Star Trek is that no one is ever consuming contemporary media. As in media that's contemporary for their time period. Everyone is always reading old novels and practicing classical music. They study Klingon Opera or read old Cardassian mysteries. No one is ever like really into obscure Klingon Nightcore. Nobody is reading shitty Ferengi pulp novels. There's no kids media of any kind. Where is space Sesame Street or junior novels about gaining superpowers from a warp core accident? What about comic books? Nobody is playing crappy indy holodeck games. It's always some recreation of a historical battle or just lounging in a mud pit at some alien spa. Someone give me angsty Bajoran protest music. I need some rebellious teens producing the worst most cacophonous death metal techno that they recorded in an empty cargo bay. I need contemporary pop culture in Star Trek.
