During a session in the campaign I'm in, the party had to go back to the Shadowfell on behalf of the Raven Queen to fulfill a favor to fetch something for her. We had to fight some Drow in order to make it to the base where the item was held.

The surviving Drow, after seeing how powerful our party is, holed up into the bunker, where Sora breaks it open and Nash burns it down.

The Drow scatter like rats, but Nash grabs one with her Mage Hand, brings him in close, and whispers "Tag, you're it" in Deep Speech, and lit him on fire.

Pyrrha must have fucked Pash up so bad, tho. Like. Imagine. Your aunt's murderer— the aunt you've lived your whole life in veneration of, who died when you were barely old enough to remember her—looks you in the eye and says: "She loved you. She carried your picture and told me who you were, and she was so fucking proud of you."

This is the conlang dialogue from Netflix's The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep. Jessie and I created a new a posteriori language derived from Hen Linge for the merfolk. It's a wild one: relative tone levels that change by word. The cast did it beautifully. Definitely worth a watch.

One of the MANY reasons that paramount/Star trek probably won’t give out another fully fledged 7 season Star Trek series with 25ish episodes per season is because of how much the CGI would cost. Back in ye olde times when they were making TNG and others, they would just paint the planets out and use that as a background. But shows don’t really do that anymore, and to have it to the standards of other shows today, they would have to do pretty much everything using at least some special effects.

But the thing is, I would be absolutely fine if they just started painting on planets again? I’d be absolutely fine if they just started slapping glue again to people’s faces for different species? (all this stuff is pretty much the essence of Star Trek)

Like, I would rather have a brilliant, new, well thought out Star Trek show with terrible to no effects than 10 episodes of just boring but amazing looking CGI. Let the people have glue on their faces!!! And I know in the end to compete with other shows to bring in new viewers they are going to keep on giving out 5 episode series and movies with brilliant effects, but in the end, it’ll just ruin the franchise entirely, and it’ll eventually be destroyed and discarded, or just forced to keep on pushing out movies and reboots that nobody asked for. :(

humans are so attentive to human behavior that left to our own devices we frequently impute humanlike behavior even to totally inanimate phenomena (and thus create the idea of supernatural agency)

where we are dealing with actual minds ofc—different from our own but also heavily selected and socialized to be in some ways compatible with us, like dogs and cats—it can be very hard to untangle what is anthropomorphism from authentic understanding. my cat has a mind but it is much different (and simpler) than my own. even knowing this it’s hard not to speak of her in humanlike terms most of the time!

but boy I can’t help but think this would make it even harder to really grapple with sapient aliens and learn how their minds worked. like we would know they were very like us in some ways—but with a different evolutionary history possibly very unlike us as well. And I’m not taking like basic cultural misunderstandings either—I wonder if we might have real trouble at first understanding even what motivates them at a basic level

as they might us too of course. nor would this necessarily be about human or alien rationality—we might both approach such an encounter in as rational and expansive a mindset as we could manage, and both come away baffled, or worse, not even understanding what mistakes and bad assumptions we had made.

We know that at some point their timelines merged when they arrived to save her…

But we don’t know when exactly those alignments took place when they were still apart… which just makes you wonder…
