Animal of the Day!
Red Flat Bark Beetle (Cucujus clavipes)
Tumblr media
(Photo by Tom Murray)
Conservation Status- Unlisted
Habitat- Northern North America
Size (Weight/Length)- 10 mm
Diet- Insects; Larvae
Cool Facts- People generally have a stigma against bark beetles because they’re known to kill trees through blue stain fungus. May I introduce the red flat bark beetle, a beetle that eats the larvae of other bark beetles and protects their home tree. They make a small initial hole to crawl underneath the tree’s bark where they then hunt anything that fits in their mouth. Due to living in polar areas, red flat bark beetles have learned how to survive freezing temperatures to the extreme. They lose up to 40% of the water in their cells to prevent themselves from freezing solid. Instead, they are able to continue eating the other hibernating insects in their tree as snow continues to fall.
Rating- 12/10 (Flat as a pancake.)

Prompt - Skill
@jegulus-microfic December 28 Word count 312
They were playing a mostly friendly game of Quidditch in the Potter’s back garden. James and Sirius were one team's chasers with Peter as keeper. Marlene and Regulus made up the other team, with Lily as their keeper. Remus was lying on the grass beneath them. He’d said in no uncertain terms that he would not be playing. No, Sirius, don’t even ask.
James had the most skill out of all the players. However, the others were hardly lacking in Quidditch skills.
James was faster and managed to get the quaffle past Lily repeatedly. He could tell that Marlene, in particular, was getting frustrated by their team’s lack of points. She called a time-out. Regulus and Lily flew closer, huddling together. James watched as Marlene leant close to Regulus’s ear and whispered something that made him look up at James with a wicked grin, nodding in agreement.
They started again, racing up and down the pitch. James had the quaffle and was almost within scoring range when Regulus shot in front of him, giving him a cheeky wink as he flew by. James’s head swung around to follow Regulus’s flight. His grasp loosened for a split second, but it was long enough for the quaffle to slip from where he had it tucked under his arm and fall into the waiting hands of Marlene, flying directly beneath him. She wasted no time racing towards Peter and getting the quaffle through the goalpost.
A huge cheer went up from Marlene and Lily, having finally scored. Regulus flew back to James, hovering at his side.
“Dirty tactics, is it, love?” James asked, unable to hide his grin.
“Marlene is very competitive.” Regulus shrugged, “Though I can’t say I didn’t jump at the chance.” He leaned over and placed a chaste kiss on James’s face before shooting off again, spinning James’s broom as he did.
