Okayy you guys are saying its September 16, 1920 but I can't find it in the diaries and im losing my mind alreadyy
Hello. Do you have any idea where the next quote is from? I've read that it's from the diaries but I can't find it in my edition
"Verbringe nicht die Zeit mit dem Suchen des Hindernisses, vielleicht ist keines da."
In English it is translated as: "Don't spend time looking for the obstacle, maybe there isn't one."
For me it kinda sounds like a misquoting.
Hello! It's not Kafka (I think) and I tried searching the original source but couldn't find it so far.

Maybe this is parasocial but I was a little disappointed to hear that Kafka hired prostitutes and didn’t die a virgin when I first heard about him
People not being able to get over this is very funny lol (and a bit concerning if im being honest…)

What do you think about Dostoevsky?
I'm not sure how to convey this properly but I think how I feel about Dostoevsky is how a believer feels about God…
Reading Dostoevsky purifies you and I guess there's something godlike in him to be able to do that.

Hello! :) You recently answered a question about whether Franz Kafka ever mentioned drinking alcohol. Now I'm curious: did he ever write about cigarettes? I know smoking was far more common back then, but I've never come across any references to it in his diaries, aside from a mention of his doctor smoking.
I don't remember any particular instance but I'd assume he smoked since it was pretty common back then, especially in bars and cafes.

Strange question, but am i the only one that feels like I’m doing something illegal while reading Kafkas (or any other authors) diaries/letters? It’s like I’m stepping too deep into his private life, but at the same time i really want to find out more about him
Not strange at all! Obviously there's that feeling of invading someone's privacy when reading anything personal someone has written for themselves. But I think after some time it's all right because when it's been decades and centuries after that person has died, their writing being public wouldn't hurt anyone (who is alive).
Obviously it's a complicated issue, especially considering the concept of consent and intellectual property rights so I think at the end of the day every person has to decide for themselves if they are comfortable with reading someone's private writings.

year 12 essay anon: i meant which other texts i should compare it to. phone autocorrect killed me with a gun
I thought you could take the themes of Metamorphosis and take another story with the same themes and compare how differently different authors deal with portraying them.
Main themes of Kafka's Metamorphosis is change and (due to this change) alienation from others. You could compare Metamorphosis to Kafka's other work "A hunger artist" as it deals with similar themes (and is also short). Or you could compare it to other existentialist/absurdist stories, such as Albert Camus' "The stranger".
Another good story would be "The yellow wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman (I haven't read this one so I'm saying this based on its content/genre/themes).
