How is it I've ended up in a situation where i end up writing two costume metas a week now 🤔😂😳 We are sneak peek meta'ing as there is some juicy stuff in the sneak peaks we've had!! First up,
Madney!!
Tumblr media
Lots of check - sooooo much check going on here!! the interesting thing about having both of them in check is how they contrast each other - I think we'll see that Maddie is more confused about things than Chimney is as the episode unfolds. Maddies jacket being a variety of check hints at confusion and danger on multiple fronts - I'd be prepared to put money down on Maddie not only reckoning with the Doug of the equation, but also there being further things for her in relation to her parents and some things around Jee-Yun as well. How exactly we'll see all that play out and how much detail they'll go into over it I have no idea, but I can see 2 possibly 3 different tweed chcks on her jacket, so there are likely to be 2 or 3 things that she has to face up to.
Chimneys Check has however been lurking there below the surface all season long and that very much plays into the longer arc we've seen for him this season. I would've loved to have actually seen the joint therapy session we were supposed to get at the start of the season because I'm sure it would've played into this underlying foreshadowing of danger we have for him, but I have a theory about why we didn't end up seeing it. Chimney's check has nearly always been close to his skin - by that I mean shirts rather than jumpers or jackets - and we've seen a lot of times where it is hidden under a plain jumper or jacket. I don't want to jump the gun too much by making crazy predictions, but as well as foreshadowing his season finale injury, I think we might be seeing some foreshadowing for Chimney keeping some stuff close to his chest that we will get to see play out in season 7 - its feeling very much like this season is setting up some sort of Chimney trauma healing arc that is bigger than the smallish stuff we've been given so far - it has always felt a little off that we never really got to dig into the stuff with Chimneys father more than we did and then with the Kevin stuff we got in the last episode, it feels like the show building towards something bigger for him and the costumes are aiding this subtext.
Eddie and Chris
there are all of the things going on here in this scene!! firstly as has already been mentioned - it is the same knit hoodie that Eddie was wearing in 5x14. We'll come back to Eddie though - I want to start with Chris!
This is the first time we've ever seen Chris in a denim jacket, in fact we've never actually seen him in a jacket at all, we've only seen him in hoodies up to this point. there is something about this being the first time we see him wear one - at Shannons grave side. Denim jackets are culturally tied to westerns, cowboys and to Texas. Christopher wearing one here would appear to be a visual way of tying him to the childhood he had with his mother - backing up the conversation about making s'mores with her when he was younger.
Tumblr media
We can't not talk about the striped hoodie Stripes according to my theory are all about change incoming - the theory hasn't yet been disproven by the wardrobe department and I get the feeling that here is no different. The idea that a change is coming in Christophers life is one that has been hovering around for a little while and the narrowing of the stripes would suggest that change is getting closer. I can't not mention the fact that the hoodie is also white and grey striped - the horizontal version of Buck shirt from the shooting. this is suggesting two things to me - one it is connecting Chris directly to the fact he nearly lost both parents - sitting at the grave of one parent while wearing something that echoes an outfit from the moment he could've lost a second parent. I also think there is something in the connection to Buck specifically in this - its directly connected to the will and that Chris has a third parent - I can't wait to see if I'm just clowning hard, or if the change the stripes Chris is wearing are foreshadowing some connetion to the will!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I do want to touch on the fact that he has short trousers on here - I'm fascinated by them as a choice because again, they're not something we've seen Chris wearing before and my brain automatically went to Buck and the short trousers he has been wearing a lot of. The ones we see Chris in here are a bit shorter than the ones Buck wears but I do think it was an interesting choice - I hope we get to see Chris moving in them so I can see exactly how short they actually are, because if they are meant to mimic Bucks then that is very much a choice by the costume department - to connect Christophers past with his present and future!
Tumblr media
Back to Eddies greenish black hoodie. while there is very much the connection to Buck misunderstanding the assignment and the heart metaphors at play, there is another aspect to this outfit being worn again and that is his therapy session with Frank
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You get some weird screenshots from this scene from me because I want you to look at Eddies arm (this is literally the only vaguely decent shot of it I can get from the sneak peek!) and notice how Eddie is very much not wearing his watch - there is no watch to be seen work or home or fancy watch!!! this is very much saying that Eddie isn't racing against time here or any of the other time metaphors that are in play - other than Eddie has time, that Eddie has moved on and is at peace with Shannon now - something also supported by the choice of flowers at the grave.
I love flower meanings (if you hadn't already figured that out) and the bouquet of roses with some goldenrods is interesting! Goldenrods represent happiness and sincerity and are also associated with new beginnings. The roses are in dark red, coral orange, pale yellow and white. Roses are all generally associated with love, but each colour represents a different aspects or types of love. they do also have some other meanings attached to them. Yellow roses are symbols of friendship and they are connected with Dia de Muertos - the day of the dead, where they are a symbol of remembrance. The white roses are a symbol of innocence and purity, but also represent new beginnings (which is why they're often seen at weddings). the red roses are romantic love and the orange ones bridge the gap between romantic love and friendship - interesting that there is the most of these ones - suggesting that Eddies feelings towards Shannon sit more in the fond friendship and remembrance zone rather than the romantic zone - its saying that Eddie has and is moving on from her - that he will always think of her with love and affection, but that those feelings have subsided into something more like friendship. This is a clear symbol of Eddie being ready to move on fro her.
Tumblr media
Natalia
Oh there is so much going on here that I can't even begin to tell you!!!
first up - her hand is bound in a handkerchief with what appear to be blue roses.
Tumblr media
Roses in general terms mean love - red for romantic, yellow for friendship etc. Blue roses mean unattainable love (because they do not occur naturally - only through artificial means) - so that would suggest that both love is unattainable for both Natalia and Buck in this direction but also that any feelings etc are not real - they can only be achieved through synthetic or artificial means - suggesting that any attempt at a relationship is going to be forced. Blue roses can also mean (especially the lighter shades of blue) emotions - specifically the finding of hope peace and tranquility. So with all of this in mind we end up with the concept of Buck finding what he’s looking for and that Natalia will help him get there, but that it isn't love, its the peace, tranquility and happiness that he's been seeking.
Natalia wearing a black velvet blazer is also a telling choice - here we have a connection to Bucks date not date outfit from 6x13. Not only does this jacket therefore tie into the idea of dates not actually being dates, that one of them may think that a potential date is a date, when it is in fact not one, but it also plays into the mixed feelings title from that episode as well. overall the jacket is playing into the idea of misunderstandings on some level (Buck continuing to misunderstand the assignment!)
Tumblr media
I know you're all staring at how pretty she is, but I want you to look at that necklace!! We have seen that necklace before!!
Sorry for the jump scare, but here it is;
Tumblr media
Now why on earth would you put Natalia in the very same necklace as Taylor Kelly unless it means something?!!! I wrote this in my 5x16 costume meta about that necklace and its meaning;
The chain she was wearing however - very interesting - well to me at least!! (you might have already read this part if you read my answer to an ask!!) So chains that look like actual chains (as this one does) are usually representative of bondage or incarceration - such as the chains of slavery or the chains worn by prisoners or the idea of chattel - the concept of possession - belonging to someone or something -such as historically when women became the property of men upon the event of their marriage (the ball and chain). non of the associations with chains are positive ones! There is also the location around her neck - its not worn loose or lower down it is literally like a chain collar around her neck - a noose like position.
Basically all of this adds up to Taylor signalling that she is essentially making her self a chattel - staking her claim on Buck through the concept of her being the woman in possession. The thing is though that idea is outdated - Taylor herself is outdated (as in to be history soon) and there are so many quotes about breaking free from chains that bind you and that love frees you from your chains. So if Taylor is putting herself into the idea of being a chain - a noose about Bucks neck - the symbolism becomes as much about Taylors attempts to chattel herself as it is about the concept of Buck freeing himself of the chains binding him and the idea that Love will free him from those chains. Now because this is film/tv - the director will use that chain symbolism to point out the love - the audience knows Taylor is in a relationship with Buck so they will subconsciously connect that chain to him. But where Buck is located - that is where the love is and the audiences eye will be draw to that location - in placing Buck with Eddie and not having him come over to the conversation and therefore standing next to Lucy in any way - it is all done to show where the love that will set Buck free is - and that is with Eddie!!
I stand by all I said in that meta - it is all still relevant. However, the fact they’ve chosen to have Natalia wear the necklace we saw Tay Kay in in 5x16 for that very key scene (when Buck was off flirting with Eddie in the background) is less about Natalia herself trying to stake a claim on Buck and much more about what she represents as a death doula. She is a representation of death and this necklace is playing into the idea of death having a claim over Buck - of Buck feeling like death has a claim over him. It continues to play into the theme of Orpheus and Eurydice's that we saw at play through Carla in 6x11. the concept of Buck still wanting to look back rather than forward and the act of looking back pulling you back to the underworld.
This is telling me that Buck is still drawn by death, that he is attracted to and and chateled or attached to death because he hasn’t yet dealt with any of his route trauma.
The fact that we see the necklace on Tay Kay at the moment she has to reckon with who she thinks is the wedge in her relationship with Buck, may also be telling because reusing it here potentially has a similar theme at play - there is a third person/thing in any relationship they attempt to create - death that Natalia may end up feeling the same way as Tay Kay - not saying she’s going to be petty and weird like TK was, it is more likely she will recognise the wedge is bucks relationship with death - and it will be a catalyst to Bucks healing making progressI standby.
there is another connection that @theladyyavilee 's eagle eyes spotted - the necklace is also the same as a bracelet that Ana is wearing when Eddie comes across her in Jinx
Tumblr media
the meanings are similar to those I've already written about - with Ana the other more subtle connection is the reason Eddie bumps into her at all is because of Izzy Chainz - stuck up on his billboard.
The fact that we have Natalia connected to both Taylor and Ana in this way is in and of itself very telling - the connections to them is telling us that things with Natalia and Buck won't work out - as if we needed any further confirmation, the wardrobe department as always have our backs and just add their weight to all the other indicators. There is also the meaning behind Natalias name - birthday - specifically in connection with Christmas day and the birth of Christ - further tying into the theory that Natalia is going to help Buck move on from his death in some way and this will very likely also have some connection with the route of Bucks trauma - Daniel and the reaso he was born and allow him to get ever closer to finding happiness - it just won't be with her
Right that is quite enough going feral over the sneak peeks - hopefully it will tide you over until the episode airs and I can write my full normal meta!!!

even if i don't particularly like one of the past love interests i'm willing to defend her for life because the fandom is always so weird about women. especially taylor. people act like she's evil incarnate and i can't take it seriously.
yeah to be clear you don't have to personally like every single woman that graces your screen, in fact i encourage you to have nuanced opinions on female characters. it's almost worse to me to just reblog a gif set of henren and say awww and then not have any tangible opinion on their storylines. the issue is (1) acting like she's the most evil thing to ever exist and taking everything she does/says in bad faith or (2) not treating her like an independent character and forcing her into a cardboard cutout love interest role when she could be/was more than that, ie abby clark

So when s7 arrives—we should see a new couch in Buck’s loft (not the grandmotherly one his mother got for him) since he asked Natalia to help him go pick out a couch.

Your recent tags on the post talking about Buck breaking up with Natalia because all she wanted to talk about was death, was so on point. Natalia perhaps didn't want to exploit peoples pain the way TK did, but she gawked at it for sure. Some may think that's a harsh read/take on Natalia, but I'm just going with what little we were ever given. So.
I think a big part of it was that she was written so flatly as a character tbh. She just reacts to what's happening in front of her and gave no professional input.
When I first heard "death doula" I was excited because "oh someone's gonna be there to help Buck process his trauma and what happened to him in a professional manner!" Lol. Lmao even. No, just a love interest who was obsessed with his death.
Doulas are supposed to be trained professionals who provide service and guidance to their clients while they navigate through a medical event like childbirth, or death in Buck's case. But she came across as so unprofessional the entire time? She wasn't sensitive at all to his trauma? I have observed not a single moment of her "seeing him," she only sees his death as something cool that happened to him.

the 911 writers are smart because the only thing that could validate a non-eddie romance for buck in my eyes is the fact that it's a non-skinny woc. like they got me there. this will tide me over spectacularly.

I’ve been thinking a lot about Natalia and Buck and there’s just something I don’t get…
What was the point of her?
They met, they dated, we saw Natalia learn about Buck’s past relationships and current speed donor situation. Then she left.
Either they:
1. Broke up for good after literally nothing of substance happened and we saw Buck want another girl who didn’t want him.
2. Get back together which would show that Buck has to convince someone to want him and that, even if Natalia apologizes and says she was wrong, she’s still someone who at any point could then think Buck is too much and leave again.
When Buck and Taylor broke up, we saw Buck make a choice. It taught him something. I truly don’t see what Natalia is supposed to be for Buck’s story. I mean, what were the writers going for? I honestly can’t see them making Buddie canon in what they thought was the series finale, so that means they had Natalia there for a reason that isn’t about Buck and Eddie, but I can’t see a single one.
If she had come in as JUST a death doula and helped Buck work through his death, and he grew as a person, that would’ve made all the narrative sense in the universe. But they didn’t.
Their romance didn’t do anything for Buck’s story that didn’t already happen in past relationships. Unless they used her to bring in Kameron, so she’d be in the apartment, and that way she can give birth on the couch (“in danger”).
Am I crazy? Was there any point to them? Did I miss something?

it's really interesting to me that natalia's interest in buck seems almsot purely non-romantic; i want to say her fascination with buck seems academic, but that's not quite what i'm looking for, i don't think. she's interested in his story and curious about his death experience, because that's her area of expertise; he's a man who's died, who's cheated death, while she's someone who helps clients come to accept death, it makes sense that she'd be curious and find it "cool" that he defied death. meanwhile, buck is misunderstanding the assignment again and taking natalia's interest in his death experience as romantic interest/attraction, and quickly conflating it into this deep, soulful connection, casting her as the first person to really see him for who he is, when he barely knows her and she hasn't yet given any real indication that she's interested in buck as a whole, just in the experience of his that's relevant to her work.
it's just fascinating that he's like deliberately misreading the signs here. the universe is screaming at him--has been screaming at him for a while now--but he's just cheerily going on about his business and humming loudly to block it out.

I feel like rambling about my headcanon/take on what season 5 and 6 meant for Eddie, about how he's ended up where he is now, how that relates to buddie in my mind. I've already made a similar post about the feelings realization but I need to ramble some more.
First of all, I think that Eddie has feelings for Buck - he's even aware of it. Eddie is also trying to ignore his feelings, and move on - he thinks that it's one-sided and can only ever be one-sided.
The reason why I think Eddie knows about his feelings starts with the scene where Ana and Chris visit Eddie at the fire station.
That's the day when Eddie really realises his feelings for Buck, and finally starts to understand why the relationship with Ana is causing him so much anxiety.
Here:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He sees Chris with Buck, is drawn into the conversation about probies who get into trouble, makes a trip down a memory lane... And forgets to introduce Ana.
In fact Eddie doesn't even really look at her here, talk to her, include her in the conversation... It's like suddenly she's invisible to him.
He's just too busy looking at Buck and Chris interacting, having a nostalgy trip about his trouble-making probie era (naturally co-starring Buck),
and it's quite obvious that Eddie's attention pretty much lingers on Buck.
(Just look at those camera angles! Buck has the stage here! He's taking most of the space, he remains in the spotlight while other people keep drifting in and out of the shot! It's that way even when Ravi is the one who's actively talking - Ravi stays to the side of the shot, disappears for a moment. I mean sure, Eddie's looking at Chris first but then Chris actually mostly disappears from the shot. We see just the back of Christopher's head, Eddie lifts his gaze too high to be looking at Chris. All of this implies that Eddie's main focus here is Buck, his memories of Buck, Buck's words, Buck's reactions.)
Then all of a sudden Eddie's startled from his thoughts - by Ravi's assumption that Ana is his wife. That's a shock. Eddie is reminded of how serious his relationship with Ana seemingly is - even though it doesn't feel right, even though he knows that he isn't in love with her. Panic really sets in when even Chris is on board with the assumption that Ana is his wife.
They're acting like a family, but Eddie doesn't love her, people keep assuming that Eddie is already married to her, but Eddie doesn't want to marry her.. It not right, it wouldn't be right because Eddie has just been hit with the cruel reality of how one-sided their relationship truly is:
Ana is someone who barely even occupies his thoughts.
Because the truth of what just happened here is that for a moment Eddie forgot that Ana even exists,
even though she was standing right there,
next to him.
Eddie forgot to introduce her because he wasn't thinking of her at all. Why so? Because it's like she's not even there when Buck is in the same room. Buck steals the spotlight.
So Eddie panics.
And then there are just so many allusions to one-sided attraction.
There's just something about the way that Ana says:
Tumblr media
What's one-sided love but amazing darkness? So wonderful... yet lonely, sad.
Then there's that talk Eddie has with Buck about one-sided love.
It starts with the dialogue about how 'Eddie was trying to sleep until Buck interrupted'. So Eddie was trying to avoid the reality, trying to dream. But Buck interrupted. Now he's awake, aware.
And then Buck talks about how much one-sided love hurts and Eddie looks so tired and sad because he yes, he also knows what that hurt feels like.
Tumblr media
I mean... Why does the idea of one-sided love and "ready-made family" terrify and bother Eddie so much just now? Why not call things off way earlier? Eddie must have known before that day that Ana was more interested in him that he was in her!
So why was he able to ignore that one-sidedness for so long, why was he set on pretending that nothing was wrong? Why does he break up with Ana only after her visit to the station?
Because it hadn't really sunk in for Eddie how much that one-required love must hurt her. He wasn't really able to feel proper empathy for Ana before that moment - and the reason for that lack of empathy, that dismissal, was that he didn't really know how painful unrequited love is... until he felt it too. For Buck. His best friend. His best male friend. His best male friend who keeps falling for women and having girlfriends!
And then there's the way Eddie, Buck and Chris are so close, how Buck is so much like a parent to Christopher... And how wonderful and sad that must feel like for Eddie, because he must have already had some inclination of his feelings and that looming hurt. Maybe that's even why he asked Ana out. Bobby does talk with Eddie about moving on before he does. I think it's not just the idea of a ready-made family with Ana that scares Eddie.
The idea of Buckley-Diaz family unit scares Eddie too... Because it's so close to what he wants - but it's also so out of reach.
So maybe he's not ready for it.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
(... And based on Buck's reaction, maybe Eddie's not the only one with conflicted feelings about a ready-made family.
Their talk ends with Buck's biting remark about how Eddie can go back to sleep because it's not like they're going home anytime soon.)
And maybe Eddie kinda does go back to sleep, or attempts to.
I feel like Eddie's embark into the dating world is a desperate attempt to move on from Buck.
What sparks that eagerness to date? The talk Eddie has with his tia ( = aunt).
Eddie is lying about the arranged date he was pressured to go on and went, telling her it went great. Tia is of course like 'cut the crap'.
Eddie apologises, says that he isn't ready. Tia tells him that "that's the point, you're never ready!"
Then tia starts talking about her first husband - Eddie is shocked to learn that his tio Paco was actually tia's second husband. Eddie wants to know why nobody has told him about the first husband and tia explains that it's like he never even existed.
So she's telling Eddie that when he meets someone new, he'll finally move on and forget about his feelings and pain, forget the past. Which is why tia is pushing Eddie to go on dates.
She tells Eddie that she'd been trying to get over her first husband for six years and wasn't ready when she met Paco. If she hadn't gone out with the girls from work she would have never met her second husband, and she only went out because her friends forced her to go out.
So I think this conversation is what makes Eddie think that nothing that he feels now matters, it'll work, he'll move on, he just needs to try, and try harder.
He's pushing himself to forget. In the process he also falls into an old pattern - ignoring his own feelings, putting Christopher's feelings first... I think it's telling that when Eddie first meets Marisol at work he doesn't really talk to her, and we can't see him talking with her the second time they meet when they come to fix the ceiling, either. The third time they meet it's the kind of cute coincidence Eddie has been talking about... And he realises it - then walks away without asking her out.
Then we see him texting with her, and later calling her to ask her on a date. But the scene where they agree to a date... It's set after Eddie is told to meditate. To imagine.
So we don't really know how real that scene was. What we saw was Christopher urging Eddie to call her. And Eddie acting all giddy and happy... But then the scene ends with Eddie opening his eyes. Right before he opens his eyes we see Buck cuddling with Natalia, asking her to buy a couch with him... Did Eddie maybe also imagine that?
How much of it was real? Was the happiness Eddie felt with Marisol just wishful thinking?Even if the phone call 'really' happened, were Eddie's reactions honest or was he once again ignoring his heart to please others. Was he just trying to delude himself because he wants to move on and forget?
He doesn't look that excited when he opens his eyes.

considering s7 allegedly comes out in january 2024, it means buck natalia and eddie marisol will be already dating for 7-8 months and if they don’t break up off-screen or in the first ep, then we’ll have to go through a few episodes or maybe even a whole season of them dating, which means they’re gonna be buck and eddie’s longest relationships yet…that’s crazy to me
anyways, my girl ali remains buck’s best gf and eddie’s gay

Currently feeling a bit feral over the fact that Natalia means Christmas Day - as in the birth of Jesus Christ and Bucks story is so heavily leaning into the birth death and resurrection of Christ - the saviour - as a central part of his narrative arc. Her presence is literally about the birth of buck - as in processing his grief about why he was born - as a saviour baby.

I can so clearly picture Buck’s storyline with the death doula leading to him realising she’s only interested in his trauma and then him having a breakdown, because let’s be clear he has been made to feel like he only matters if he’s black, blue, bleeding or dead by his parents since he was a child and after all the progress he made he’s getting with someone who’s main interest with him is knowing all the details about his death???I’m side eyeing the writers because they better not try to make this an actual thing
Someone who has that specific trauma when it comes to his parents, that led to years of reckless behaviour and is JUST unlearning that and processing it in therapy then getting with someone who glorifies his death and his trauma??? That isn’t just unhealthy it’s flat out dangerous to him mentally
Also I swear if anyone tries to give me shit for not liking Natalia with buck I am actually gonna go batshit I’m not saying this cos of buddie or whatever I’m saying this because this is a textbook bad idea (which is an understatement)

okay but the three people I want most to interrupt Buck’s date with Natalia are:
Chris, needs help with something that instantly puts Buck in Dad Mode
Eddie, and the two of them proceed to act like Such A Married Couple
Kameron, talking about Buck’s donor baby, except in standard “roommate sperm donor story arc” style, she makes an awkward mess out of it, and Natalia thinks Buck's got a baby mama
