I just love the idea that Cas and Dean actually manage to be sneaky in the beginning of their relationship, keeping it secret not because they don’t trust Sam or are ashamed but because they need to feel solid in it themselves before they tell anyone. So they’ve actually done a spectacular job of keeping quiet and not getting caught.

And then one day Cas and Dean are sitting at the table in the bunker kitchen, half asleep while Cas sips coffee and Dean munches halfheartedly on soggy cereal, when Sam comes back from his morning run.

“There you guys are!” He says as he pulls his headphones out of his ears. “I’ve been waiting for you to get up!”

“Why?” Dean asks, dropping his spoon into his bowl and splashing a little milk over the side. “You find us a case?”

Sam shakes his head as he heads to the fridge for a bottle of water. “I think there’s something wrong with the bunker.”

“What kind of something?” Dean asks, casting a curious glance around.

The bunker had seemed fine to him. Nothing strange had happened. No weird noises, no strange smells, nothing creepy or daunting that was outside of the ordinary as far as living completely underground went.

“Well, the lights have been acting weird.” Sam begins, thinking. “And the electricity will just randomly short out. It’s like all the fuses blow at once, or something, even when nothing has changed.”

Dean, still half asleep and only a few sips into his own coffee, doesn’t immediately make the connection. But Cas seems to go incredibly still across the table from him.

“Huh.” Dean says, pushing his bowl away and reaching for his mug. “I haven’t seen any of that. When is this happening?”

Dean still hasn’t pieced it together, but Cas is sending him a solid, desperate stare over the rim of his own mug. Dean’s mind is trying to kick on, to figure it out, and then Sam says—

“Well, most recently was last night. You were already in bed. And Cas— I don’t know where you were.”

And oh. Oh. Dean understands now.

Because yeah, he had been in bed last night. It just so happens that Cas had been in his bed, too. And they were— busy, but sleeping isn’t exactly what they were doing.

Dean purposely does not meet Cas’s gaze.

“Weird.” Dean says with a shrug that he hopes is nonchalant.

“Yeah,” Cas finally manages to agree, his fingers tight around his mug. “That is strange, I haven’t noticed it, either. We’ll have to keep an eye out for it and address it if it’s an electrical issue.”

Sam, beautiful, sweet Sam, doesn’t seem to notice anything amiss. He shrugs. “Yeah, just let me know if you notice it. Maybe it’s just a weird fluke.”

And it will be awhile yet before Sam understands why this only happens when he’s alone in the bunker at night, why it never happens when Dean and Cas stay up with him to the early hours of the morning to research. Sam will live confused but peacefully oblivious for as long as they can all get away with.

6.06 - YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH

it would make dean fucking furious, but i actually love the idea that jack sometimes calls sam "sammy" and that sam lets him. he's the only one besides dean that doesn't get "it's sam"

jack is always watching dean, and while part of that is search for dean's approval, the rest is because it teaches him how to interpret and be loved by sam

he calls him sammy when he's scared, or worried, or even relieved (seeing sam after lucifer brought him back would definitely elicit a sammy)

dean says it and it's sammy (protected)

jack says it and it's sammy (protector)

i also think he's seen dean and sam hug each other, sees how sam scrunches himself up so dean can still get his arms over his shoulders and folds beneath his brother. and when sam hugs jack, he hugs him sort of like dean hugs him, like how jack thinks dean used to hug sam twenty years ago

being enveloped, sam hunching over to keep him tucked into him, and for a moment jack feels like nothing can get to him

how sam harbours the same codependency as Dean but I feel it plays out differently for them both, maybe not always credited as frequently as it should be

Like when sam gets drunk, I think that's a prime example of his layers, needy, desperate, scared. He needs his big brother, he needs his big brother to tell him that everything's going to be OK. No matter sam's age he regresses to that little kid brother he always was in times of hardship, needs the reassurance of his big brother that he will be safe, that dean's going to take care of him.

He didn't know his mother, not really, he was taught to miss her. His father was absent. It was dean who held him to sleep, band aid his scrapped knees, walked him to school, picked him up, put his marked school work on the motel fridge, his big brother, that was sam's entire peripheral vision. dean was sam's mom and dad rolled into one, the one who raised him.

As much as some viewers perceive dean being the obsessive/possessive one about sam (he is too) but so is sam about dean. If sam wasn't the forefront thought of dean's mind he would lose his shit, as unhealthy as their codependency is to every therapist ever, that's how sam defines himself, dean's little brother 'only he gets to call me sammy' dean's smug face, that's dean's sammy, no one elses, couldn't ever be<3

Can we just take a moment to appreciate Sam Winchester's strength. It takes strength from your guts and bones to refuse temptation, to pass on opportunities that would benefit you but come with bad strings attached, to be humble, to be selfless, to say no to the evil this world is tainted with. Sam has seen the alluring darkness of the world and the underworld and every part of both. He has credentials that could get him into any parts of those worlds and set him up with positions of power, wealth, anything he wanted. At any point, Sam had the option to give up on the Winchester way "saving people, hunting things" and be selfish and corrupt. It doesn't even have to be a turning to the dark side... he wouldn't even stop hunting at multiple occasions because people might die. He could have chosen any life he wanted and left hunting behind, left his brother, all their schemes to bring down evil. He could have given it all up whenever he got tired, or depressed, or angry, or just saw how flawed everyone and everything was and became disillusioned. But he walked through the way of temptation and always did what he believed was RIGHT. He betrayed himself, denied himself, lived with hatred and disgust for himself when he could have chosen the easy path of giving in to the darkness and letting it becomes his chosen path. Dean was a huge factor in Sam's constant decision to stay on the straight and narrow, but he could have become an antagonizing influence if Sam had let bitterness rise in his heart. If Sam had been selfish, Dean's opinion wouldn't have had so much sway. But that's not how the story goes. The truth is, Sam Winchester is a hero.

What really gets me is that by the end of the series, Sam had lost everyone. The last 3 episodes of the series are just Sam losing his last 3 remaining family members. He loses Cas, he loses Dean, and he loses Jack. He lost his best friend, his brother, and his child. He’s alone in the world, he has nobody, and that’s basically the worst ending I can think of.

I mean let's be REALLY real though, with the way they set up Mary Winchester on supernatural, there was no way they could have legitimately brought her out of the woodworks and NOT have it fall flat on their faces.

She was almost this Saintly Figure this Paragon of Motherly Love and Sacrifice and then she is NOT.

Obviously cause the the writers had Amara RIP her out of some near perfect heaven where she hangs out with John and baby sam and little dean for eternity,

And then is thrust into this Dumpster Fire earth that dean just saved from getting nuked by making god and his sister see the winchester way, 'thou shalt love thy brother as thyself' which is absolute bars btw!!

Because didn't God's son HESUS! write that down for us?!

I mean dean on many levels expected her to get RIGHT BACK into her Role as Mother Mary and was super pissed that she was just weirded out by two (more like one?!) grown dude(s) and way too much testosterone for her own comfort.

Idk why it makes me so angry when it's a samcentric EP and all people can talk about are Dean and cas' background romance, like yes I agree let those men kiss BUTTTT Sam is right there literally dying. Guys c'mon 😭😭

i can't stop thinking about the first episode of season 6, when sam tries to convince dean to come with him, to come back to hunting. he says "it's just better with you around, that's all." it's an interesting line because sam is soulless, obviously. and even though he doesn't understand the details yet, he knows something's wrong with him.

"it's better with you around" he says, citing dean's compassion and care for others as the reason why. and how interesting is that? sam's working with plenty of other hunters who still have their souls—they're all more than capable of caring about the people they save. but sam needs dean specifically. he knows he's missing something, and he sees dean and recognizes that something in him. even cold and calculating and unrelentingly logical, sam recognizes that dean, alone, can "complete" him, give something back to him that he's supposed to have.

in episode 8 he tells dean he "needs his help." he doesn't elaborate; he never explains what he means by that. he has a whole family of hunters who'd be willing and able to help him, but still he needs dean. even without his soul, his hyperrational mind knows he needs him.

soulless sam isn't capable of caring about dean. but he doesn't need to care to know they need to be together, no matter what—to know dean is good for him, dean completes him, dean needs to be there for him.

it's like a sick reversal of season 1. sam drags dean back into this life because he can't keep going without him. because he needs him. because when you think about it logically, and sam has no other choice, there was never any other option for them.
