Black Beetle Headcanons
(Only for you pookie bear, I will write headcanons for your boy.)
————————————————————
[General Headcanons]
Probably over seven feet tall, I’m just getting that out there, he likely has sharp teeth as well.
If he liked anything about Earth, I feel like it would be music, specifically jazz or old timey music, he just gives off those vibes. That or metal.
The moment any Reach stepped onto Earth they immediately had a sneeze attack because they are not used to the pollen.
I think the closest thing you could possibly compare their species to, is a reptile, I don’t know why, it just feels the most accurate. (Or even a reptile-bug mix)
I think the Reach in general have slit pupils like cats instead of circle pupils.
Black Beetle has two expressions, angry and angrier. Or on the rare occasion, very very smug.
Black Beetle is a warrior so he has a very strict schedule and he won’t deviate from his routine for anything that isn’t a threat. He’s very meticulous with his training and work, he makes sure he’s doing everything with the intent of it being perfect.
He probably doesn’t really like Ambassador (even before the final episodes of season two) because he finds him incredibly incompetent but he had no proof so he needed to wait before taking away his title.
If there’s any Reach he actually likes, it's the Scientist, and that’s only because he actually knows she’s intelligent and is thinking about the Reach as a whole, especially when she was insisting on trying to find out why Blue Beetle’s scarab was off mode.
Black Beetle just does not show interest in anything or anyone because it’s not in his training and he is just not good at being nice.
He has a resting bitch face. That’s it.
Likely has really cold and cool skin and body temperature.
[Romantic Headcanons]
OH BOY! Now trying to romance this big fucker is a challenge for the gods.
Black Beetle doesn’t really think much about love as he’s very warrior mindset driven, so if you managed to catch his eye, you’re very lucky.
I feel like the Reach would have a sort of courtship thing, like providing the person they like with food or gifts, and he’d also partake in it.
If you didn’t know anything about their species, you’d probably be very confused when Black Beetle starts bringing you food or random trinkets he found, even if you asked him about it, I don’t think he’d explain what he’s doing, you’d have to ask Ambassador or Scientist about it, then you’d get your answer.
After that the realization that he’s trying to court you would hit you like a truck, especially if you’ve been subconsciously accepting the offerings.
It’d be a few months of this courting before he finally asks you out, and even then it’s the most blunt way possible.
A relationship with Black Beetle would definitely be interesting, he’d likely be very protective if you aren’t a Reach, like a human, though he’d likely be subtle with his protective nature.
Oddly enough, if you are smaller than him (which is likely true), he’d be very gentle with touching you in any manner due to having claws.
On his breaks or days off, he’d probably spend them resting or training, and if he’s resting, you will be laying next to him, he is actually really cool to the touch, so if you’re human then you’re like his own personal heater.
He likes when he can compare his hand size to yours, and your hair (if you have any), he finds it interesting and soft.
ABSOLUTELY HAS NO CLUE WHAT KISSES ARE. He does nuzzle though, that’s his species version of kissing, but he’ll indulge your kisses as well.

Story summaries for the week of May 21st
"Sour" - Jaime Reyes
May 22nd
Summary: Of all the things Jaime expects to find in his partner's fridge, a whole bag of seedless lemons certainly is not one of them. At first, he thinks it’s for food and drinks as a garnish or ingredient, but then he never sees them used for such things. It isn’t until one afternoon when he stays over to study that he finally finds out how his chaotic partner eats them.

"When You Come Home" - Cassandra Cain
May 25th
Summary: You would never trade Cass for anything – even if it meant anxiety when she came home a little rough from patrol or she needed to vanish for a few days at a time for a more complex mission. It never lessened the worry you felt when she walked out the door. So, when she is gone for two weeks longer, you’re almost a wreck. The reprieve comes when she makes it back in the door, after 3 am, only for you to find out she must head out again soon after for another extended trip. But Cass is facing worries of her own.

Introduction
Hi! My name's Doll, I'm 19 and I like reading fanfiction a lot and I just had the thought of slightly dabbling in it, so I made this account :)
What to expect
I don't really have a preference on what I want to write, I'm fine with x reader, I'm with character ships, I'm fine with all that. Obviously no weird shit (incest, r@pe, age play, super wide ass age gaps like no-) but, I more so wanted to use this account as a way to get better at writing fanfiction myself as well as just a way to grow as a writer. I'll mostly do Drabbles or imagines but I also like to hear people's ideas so if you want to request something or share ideas I'm also down for that. ( ꈍᴗꈍ) when I write x reader if you want the reader to have a specific race that's fine but I'll only write for black readers, because I'm black and ik that experience. Most of the time though I'll make it to where anyone can read.
Fandoms I'll write for
Jjk
Chainsaw man
Aot
Mha
Spy x family
Demon slayer
One punch man
Jojo bizarre adventures (I'm in part 4 so keep that in mind lol)
Naruto
Supernatural
Spiderverse (MCU in general)
DC (like the Batman/Flash/Blue beetle/ etc)
Mod psycho 100 (mainly reigen)
Soul eater
These the few I can remember off the top of my head, put the ones I'll mainly write about at the top
Conclusion
In conclusion, hope you'll start requesting stuff from me. Also, when I write im totally down for criticism. And if you don't wanna write a comment, just shoot me a dm, repost if you want a see more :) keep in mind I am 19 and I have school and stuff, okey byeee

The Metagene Revealed (Young Justice x GN!Reader)
word count: 3.7k
I'm almost done writing season two so expect more Shadow Of A Bluebird soon, hope you enjoy!
Warnings: Canon typical violence (which I usually wouldn't mention but there's a lot of it) and mild descriptions of torture
Summery: Even after the capture of Lagoon boy the team is nowhere closer to finding the light's partner, unfortunately the light takes matters into their own hands allowing Kaldur to prove his loyalties.
Mount Justice
March 23rd
You sat with Dick in a side room in the cave looking over files and data the league had about the light’s partner. Both of you were stumped.
There were really no leads to this mysterious partner besides the fact that there was one and either way you couldn’t focus on it. Too much was going on all at once, all of which were big enough to demand your attention.
“We’re not getting anywhere looking through the same files and records we’ve been looking through for the past few days.” You finally told Dick. It was just the two of you in a side room so masks were off and you were both perfectly comfortable with each other.
You used to have a rivalry with Dick, you were both sidekicks named after birds who worked with black themed superheroes that specialized in martial arts. It was only natural. But as the two of you grew up your rivalry melted away into friendly teasing and occasionally flirting. When he changed his hero name to Nightwing there wasn’t even a rivalry at all. Technically you won, you stayed Bluebird and Dick chose a name that (while related to birds) was not a bird name.
“There has to be something. Something we can use to figure out where they’re holding L’gann or at least who this partner is or what they want '' He sighed and slumped back in his chair.
“I don’t have any proof yet but I have a theory about that” You told Dick and he immediately peered at you with interest.
“At this point, anything might be useful” He said and you nodded while taking out a small tablet.
“I can’t completely understand what this Metagene that the crolatiens keep referring to is but it looks familiar to one of the genes Lady Lilith isolated when creating her metahuman shadows. I very well might be wrong but is there a possibility that part of the reason they were kidnapped was to experiment on metahumans?” You asked and Dick was deep in thought.
“We don’t have nearly enough information to come to any conclusions” He said and you nodded.
“How did you know what genes Lady Lilith was using anyways?” He asked and you smirked.
“I’ve been busy these past few years” You simply answered and his face shifted to slight annoyance.
“Where did you get those files Y/N?” He asked and you crossed your arms.
“Na ah Wonder bird. All I can tell you is that the shadows won’t miss them. They shut down the program.” You told him and your tone shifted mid sentence. It started off playful but changed to solemn. Dick’s face reflected the change in mood.
“Why?” He asked. It had been five years since you first shared your past with the team and after a while they all realized why.
You did everything in your power not to be reminded of it. Even though now you were much more open about it there were things that hadn’t changed.
You never referred to Lady Lilith as your mother. After being taken in by Dinah you learned what a real mother is supposed to be and you knew that Lady Lilith was not that. But even though you were more open about life with the shadows and your training the program that brought you into the world was never mentioned.
Project: Mother Of Demons was not brought up. Everyone respected that and you had come a long way from keeping all of your life a complete secret. A few topics being off the table was something they were all fine with. But this was different and you didn’t get mad at Dick for bringing up Project MOD this time.
“It wasn’t worth the resources anymore. I was the last one, their pièce de résistance, when I was deemed a failure they started relying more on Metahuman mercenaries. It was simpler.” You told Dick. When you had stolen the files you were conflicted to see the records. You were the last twisted creation your Lady Lilith made for the shadows and while you were glad no one else will have to suffer the tests and training you got you were also bitter. Why you? Why couldn’t she have stopped before you?
Of course you knew the answer. You were a huge failure in the eyes of the League of Shadows. Lady Lilith promised them you would be a perfect weapon at their disposal and you turned out to be a less than eager child who happened to fly.
Before Dick could say anything about the swift change in your tone or mood the both of you heard the computer announce an incoming zeta beam.
“Recognized, Blue Beetle B22, Impulse B23”
You and Dick both put on your masks and went to greet the young heroes.
“Haha! Left them in the dust!” Impulse AKA Bart Allen exclaimed and Immediately Dick was in team leader mode.
“Left who in the dust? And what is that?” He questioned as the two of you stopped in front of the young heroes.
“Souvenir!” Bart exclaimed and you crossed your arms. He was so much like young Wally it was almost as if that’s who he was related to and not Barry Allen the flash himself (who was his grandfather in the future). As if that wasn’t confusing enough. Honestly you found that with the team and the League it was important to deal with the here and now. And here and now Bart and Jaime AKA Blue Beetle had brought in a tracking device Kaldur had used to track them. Let’s just say Dick was not happy.
“So you brought foreign, possibly alien tech into the cave? Rookie mistake.”
You sighed. Over the years and as you took on a more mentoring role within the team you wondered how your own mentors ever had the patience to deal with your and your friends' antics as kids.
“Hand it over Jr” You told Bart and he looked at you annoyed.
“Hey-” You cut him off before he could complain though.
“Sorry kid. You will forever be Junior Flash to me.” You said and you and Dick examined the device for a second while Bart turned to Jaime thinking maybe he’d defend him but the teen just shrugged.
Dick took the tracking device and had the computer begin it’s analysis.
You looked through the diagnostic data the computer displayed and your eyes widened just as an alarm sounded.
“Ugh, I’m an idiot!” Dick said and just as he took out his escrima sticks and you took out your batons, Tommy Terror threw Superboy at you. You and Blue Beetle flew up and dodged but Conner's flying body threw Dick back and onto the ground.
You scanned the area around you. Your battleground. The Terror twins along with Icicle Jr and an assassin you didn’t recognize.
Your hands went to your utility belt and you threw a smoke bomb down towards the assassin, then you went in for the kill. You dove down and used the momentum to tackle the girl down to the ground. The two of you exchanged blows as you looked around. Since you shared your secret five years ago you finally agreed to use more of the skills the shadows taught you in combat. Talking about your past helped you accept it so you didn’t have much problem playing defense while trying to assess the status of your teammates.
Tuppence Terror had an unconscious Beast Boy over her shoulder, Nightwing and Superboy had yet to get up after being thrown at each other and Bart had just taken out Icicle Jr. He smiled proudly and ran at Tuppence Terror and you realized what he was trying to do.
“Impulse don’t!” You yelled and in that moment of distraction the assassin was able to pin you to the ground and place an inhibitor collar on you.
“Not today Bluebird” She said and before she left she pressed a button and an electric shock ran through your entire body. She ran off before you could recover, you looked around the room at your teammates.
Impulse had an inhibitor collar around his neck and was being held by his suit by Tommy Terror while Nightwing had just managed to get Superboy off of him when the assassin you had just fought jumped him.
You got up. You didn’t try to remove or fight the collar, you knew it was useless but you had other tricks up your sleeve. You finally steadied yourself enough to stand only to be shocked again. You fell to your knees and grimaced as Kaldur walked into the room with a duffle bag.
“Stand down. This battle is over.” He stated and you hated how his voice stayed steady. It was as if he held no remorse or care for his former teammates- his former friends.
This was the first time you had seen Kaldur since he turned. You hated that after everything you’d been through, after he knew your past and what the shadows and by extension the Light had done, that he would stay. But no. Your old friend stood before you now in a manta uniform matching his villainous father and you could only sneer.
“I don’t think so traitor!” Beetle said and aimed his armor’s plasma canons at kaldur. You looked at him, telling him not to do anything with only a look. But he didn’t listen. Instead Kaldur gave him a much better reason not to fire.
“Rethink Beetle. This is the same type of bomb that obliterated Melina Island. I am holding down the dead man switch. If my thumb comes off this button for any reason, Mount Justice falls.” Kaldur explained calmly and coldly. You wanted to hiss, you wanted to protest, you wanted to strangle him. But you were saving the energy you had left. Now was not the time to make a move.
In a matter of seconds Blue Beetle floated down and held his hands up in surrender. One of the Terrors put an inhibitor collar on him and Kaldur in a cruel twist of fate gave instructions to his squad of wanted criminals.
“Escort Beetle, Impulse, Beast Boy and Bluebird to the flier.” He instructed and the assassin from before made a rather bold move and questioned what to do with Nightwing and Superboy.
“As hostages here they have value. But Nightwing is an ordinary human, Superboy a human, kryptonian hybrid clone. Neither category is of any interest to our partner.” Kaldur told her and you were gritting your teeth, holding back so many comebacks and insults to Kaldur’s words. Instead you let the as of yet unnamed Assassin secure your hands behind you and lead you out of the cave. You didn’t struggle. It was useless, you surrendered, there was no reason to fight them on this. You’d find other ways.
The Terror twins carried the unconscious Gar and Bart while Icicle Jr lead Jaime to the ship.
Suddenly while Jaime talks to himself in the strange way you’ve always seen him do his armor formed weapons and he attacked. He easily knocked Icicle Jr and the assassin away as you used the momentum and the sudden lack of restraints around your arms to roll out of the way.
“Blue Beetle stop!” You yell at him but it doesn’t seem to matter as he attacked Kaldur and the atlantean falls, letting go of the deadman switch in his hand. Your eyes widen as your body immediately braces for an explosion that doesn’t come.
“It was a bluff” Beetle says and runs at Kaldur but you don’t move. Even if the bomb was a bluff you’re outnumbered and the inhibitor collars around your necks are restricting the powers of three out of the four heroes present. Two of which are unconscious. There was no way to win. And in fact you didn’t, because Kaldur used sorcery to take down Beetle and soon you were the only conscious captive. Still you didn’t put up a fight. You let them lead you onto their ship and tie you to the boys with rope.
You took off on their ship and just after takeoff Bart and Gar woke up. You turned to both of them to make sure they were okay before focussing on the ever fleeting mountain. A small part of you wasn’t sure if you’d ever seen it again but the rest of you knew it was only a matter of time before the team found you. In the meantime you had to take care of the three inexperienced heroes with you. That became your first priority. Keep Jaime, Bart and Gar safe.
A growing pit in your stomach formed before your eyes could even process what they saw.
A huge explosion engulfed the mountain and you practically saw the past five years of your life flash before your eyes along with it. You saw your first meeting with the team, your first mission, training and just hanging out. You saw your friends, your family and you screamed.
Bart and Gar let out yells as well but it wasn’t like you. Two of your best friends were still inside that mountain. You had formed ties you knew would be with you to your grave in that mountain. And you saw the fiery clouds now that it was gone.
“HOW DARE YOU! KALDUR’AHM I HAVEN’T TAKEN A LIFE IN OVER A DECADE BUT I WILL REVEL IN TAKING YOUR PATHETIC LIFE IN THE MOST PAINFUL WAYS YOUR FRIENDS IN THE LIGHT TAUGHT ME HOW, YOU TRAITOROUS, BASTARD SON OF A-” Your screaming and threats were ended by a cry of pain and another shock from your inhibitor collar. This one didn’t stop until black invaded your vision and you passed out.
Pacific Ocean
March 30th
You weren’t sure how long you’d been out.
You didn’t even know what was real and wasn’t anymore. You were sent back to memories of your time on Infinity Island, of the tests, the training.
You were strapped to a table with sensors all over your body. Mr. Morris was behind a wall of computer screens and glass and you felt your mother’s prying eyes watch you from the observation deck above.
Another wave of electricity hit your body and you screamed in pain. You had been like this for who knows how long. Between shocks they’d have you do your training exercises to see if there were any changes.
Nothing. You wanted to shrink and disappear under your mother’s glare.
Between the memories you woke up and strange creatures were monitoring you in an even stranger room. They spoke a language you didn’t understand. At some point you questioned if they were even real or if this was another trick your brain was playing on you.
It was only when you saw Kaldur himself approach your pod that you knew this was all real. You used all the energy you could muster to hiss at your former friend and he looked at you pityingly.
“Why is Bluebird here if this lab is for those whose Metagenes you wish to activate?” You heard him ask and you tuned in as much as you could to the conversation although your eyes were getting droopy and your body wished for sleep. You were partially surprised when the creatures responded in english.
“Originally they were in a different lab, one for those with active Metagenes. In our testing we found that this one has another unactivated Metagene.” The scientist Creature said and you allowed your eyes to close. If they believed you were unconscious they might let their guard down even more.
“Yes. They said something similar once about being a disappointment to their masters at the League of Shadows for only developing one of their multiple Metagenes.” Kaldur explained and you held back a grimace. How dare he share your past with these creatures. How dare he betray you like this and allow you to once again become someone’s experiment. But you were tired, your body ached in the strange pod you were in. You stopped resisting long ago and once again you allowed your body to slip into the darkness, though you didn’t know if it was sleep or unconsciousness.
You didn’t know how much time had passed, you weren’t scared, not for yourself. If this is how you were meant to go you were proud of the good you had done but Bart and Garfield and Jaime were just kids. They had full lives to live and no blood on their hands, that’s what kept you strong. The knowledge you will find them and you will get them out.
You looked around the room when the strange creatures weren’t around you noticed something you hadn’t before. You had known L’gann was there from the beginning and you dreaded what these creatures wanted with the lone atlantean but as more pods were wheeled in you saw Robin and Batgirl. They were confined to pods and placed across the room from your pod, in civilian clothes.
When they were no longer supervised Robin, Batgirl and Bumblebee broke out of their pods and began breaking everyone else out too.
Robin came to your pod and used the keypad on the exterior to open your pod. You fell out, semi-conscious and weak.
“Bluebird, are you okay?” He asked and you nodded, leaning on him to stand up.
“I will be in a second” You told the young hero and you turned your attention to the now free group of teenagers. That’s when you also realized you were on a mind link again.
“Damn it’s been a while since other people were in my head” You said through the link as you followed Bumblebee out of the lab and through the foreign ship.
“It’s good to have you back Bluebird” You heard Nightwing’s voice say in your mind and you nodded, finally able to walk without assistance.
“What about Impulse, Beast Boy and Blue Beetle? Do you know their locations?” You asked as you and the group finally made it to the docking bay where you saw the Bioship was docked.
“Negative. Miss Martian is with Beast Boy but Impulse ran off to find Beetle.” Nightwing said and you helped the teens board the ship.
“Get in too. You look sick.” Nightwing told you, this time out loud and you stretched.
“I’ll be fine. We can’t leave without Miss M, Impulse, Beast Boy and Beetle” You told him and he sighed knowing he couldn’t convince you otherwise.
That’s when things took a turn for the worse.
Every member of the team in the room (including yourself) took a fighting stance as Black Beetle came in and shut the entry ways to both the Bioship and the rest of the seemingly alien ship. “Apologies meat, but no one goes anywhere”
You were one of only two senior members of the team and you were barely in fighting shape. Superboy had just once again been thrown and you had a civilian trapped with you.
You knew running in would be useless so you stood in front of the civilian ready to fight if necessary.
“What’s your name kid?” You asked as you backed him into the wall.
“Uhm- I’m Virgil” He said and you nodded, turning around to face the fight.
“Okay Virgil. I don’t know if you saw but I was with you in those pods and I’m not exactly in fighting shape at the moment so if I start engaging Black Beetle you make sure to run and stay as far away from him as you can. Do you understand?” You asked him and he mumbled a yes.
Black Beetle easily took out the rest of the team and you stormed him hoping to buy some time for the others to recover. You flew over Black Beetle, trying to keep his attention away from Virgil. In your peripheral vision you saw him take a gun from one of the unconscious soldiers and you turned.
“Virgil don’t!” And just like back at Mount Justice that moment of distraction allowed Black Beetle to swat you away with ease.
Shimmer tried attacking Virgil but you smiled once you saw Batgirl jump in to take care of Shimmer.
You recovered and flew with Superboy and Wonder girl to tackle Black Beetle once again. As you made contact with Black Beetle you released a charge of blue energy that to your surprise actually affects him. He still threw you off but you stopped yourself from colliding with the wall and looked down at your hands.
“Oh you’re gonna regret that one Beetle” You said as you charged again, keeping some distance and blasting blue energy from your hands to shock Black Beetle. At some point he had enough and threw you off once again, this time using his weird staple arm to attach you to the wall. He was about to go for Batgirl when Miss M, Beast Boy, Impulse and Blue Beetle managed to open the doors and the hatch to the Bioship. Blue Beetle took on Black Beetle while the rest of the team made sure everyone was safe.
Miss M used her telekinesis to remove the staple that bound you to the wall and you nodded.
“Good to see you M’gann” You told her and she nodded, helping you onto the Bioship.
When Batgirl announced that everyone but Blue Beetle was aboard you knew what they planned to do and you didn’t argue when Nightwing piloted the Bioship out of the docking bay.
As the Bioship was leaving you managed to pick up Blue Beetle who had flown out of a hole in the ship. And like that the mission was a success. Once you were a safe distance away your body got the better of you and practically passed out on the floor of the Bioship. You were exhausted, physically and emotionally and you really didn’t wanna think about the new powers or the memories that had surfaced while on that ship. Instead you managed to slip into a calm dreamless sleep.

The Big Ones:
Imagine this: a new animator for Warner bros comes in to work. They noticed the Warner sibling acting zany to the max and decided to doodle them one day. Once they finished their doodles of the Warner sibs, they went to buy a drink but left it on a table outside on accident. The Warner sibs see it and are amazed by it. But they are unknown to who is the artist behind these amazing drawings. The animator goes back to collect their sketchbook after getting their drink, of course, before the Warner sibs hide discreetly to see who the artist is. The animator sighs in relief to see that their sketchbook is back in their own hands. They quickly go back to their department before their lunch ends. The Warner siblings soon find their interest piqued in this animator, so they go to see them, but the animator has no clue on who “the Animaniacs” are because they were born after their show ended. They become good friends. Instead of scowling and getting mad at their jokes, they simply laugh and are patient with them. Eventually, one day, pinky and brain make a portal gun where if they shoot someone, they will be teleported to another timeline. The animaniacs find this portal gun and start to shoot everywhere for fun and accidentally shoot their animator friend. They are distraught and ask pink and brain for help. Animator friend gets teleported to animaniacs 1993, in the year 1995. They take the role of temp nurse with hello nurse and Dr Scratch n sniff . Of course, finding pinky and brain to help them to go back to their world (2024). From their animator friend disguised as temp nurse, meets the Warner siblings and start their friendship all over again except in the year 1995. The animator friend always laughed when the Warner brothers say “Hello nurse” and dot replying “it’s hard to be the strong one”. Always greeting them with a hello and how are you. Animator friend even stuck up for them when the ceo and Dr Scratch n sniff was talking smack about them. Eventually, the brain managed to find a way for the reader to go back home. The Warner sibs were sad and that’s when animator friend told them that they were from the future and that they were friends in that timeline and that they will return but instead they will work there as a different profession. Animator friend returns, and all is back to normal. The Warner sibs don’t realize that animator friends and temp nurses are the same person. So after the day animator friend went back to their timeline, the animation department got egg bombed, and all their equipment had stayed in the department, so all the animators had to take temporary jobs in the studio. Animator got the nurse job again, dr scratch n sniff recognizes animation friend (he knew it was animation friend disguised as temp nurse because they needed a disquise to stay in the studio so brain can get the portal gun ready to send friend home. Brain explained to scratch n sniff, and the 3 of them were a team temporarily) . And since the hello nurse was away on vacation dr scratch n sniff needed the help. The Warner sibs decided to pay a visit to Dr Scratch n sniff and unknowingly see temp nurse (animation friend). They were ready to cry and jump on animation friend, saying how much they’ve missed them. Dr Scratch n sniff is confused going “guys it animator friend you just saw them 15 min ago”. That’s when they connected the dots and were like “what!” During the next 3 weeks, they were attached to animator friend like glue.
Riddler and Batman rivalry, with Riddler's obsession being more romantic and Batman's being more platonic (BTAS).
You used to work with Edward back at Competitron, helping out with the game a little bit (possible romantic tension between the two of you), but distanced yourself after the whole 'Trying to kill Mockridge' thing. Batman, at one point, had come around to ask you questions about him and your employer. After Edward got sent to Arkham, maybe you were writing to him, hoping he could get better, but really not visiting him, maybe just intimidated by the place or too scared to see fully what he's become.
Batman checks up with you frequently, making sure you're not too disheartened by Edward becoming the Riddler, along with helping you move on. Later, when Riddler gets trapped in virtual reality, it's the first time you really visit him, and you really start waiting for him to wake up — Batman is there of course, because he really doesn't like the idea of leaving you alone with him, coma-like state or not.
Eventually, when Riddler comes back, you help him get used to being back in his body — physical therapy and whatnot — helping him be on good behaviour — leading up to him being on parole.
Finally, Riddler's free, the Wacko Toys deal is going great, and he actually has the connection with you he lost long ago. Things couldn't be better! Until Batman comes in, knowing he isn't reformed at all. You fight against the idea, because why wouldn't you? You believed in Edward, and you hope that eventually Batman sees it, too.
Finally, the Wacko Toys party; and Riddler and you are actually having the time of your lives — catching up, playful flirtation, all the fun stuff. Then Batman comes in again, telling Riddler in a one-on-one that he knows he 'can't help himself', and how long does 'he plan on lying to you?'

That Sounds Beautiful to Me (Loki x chubby reader)
"Hey, you were pretty good." Y/n jumped at hearing a voice call out to her after she exited the back door of the club.
She brought her hands up, reminiscent of the movement to surrender, not that the shadowy figure in the alley would know, but the connotation of the movement was quite the contrary to what it meant to her. She was readying to fight. "Please don't rape me."
"Rape you?!" The man sputtered as he stepped out of the shadows. "I swear upon the wealth of my entire industry that I won't touch you without your explicit permission. I just wanted to know if you were available for private bookings."
Y/n froze at the sight of Tony Stark standing in front of her and she struggled to keep her tongue from tripping over the words that she forced out of her mouth. "Never done any, but sure."
"Cool." He handed her his personal card. "Call if anything comes up. Next Friday, show up at Stark Tower at 5pm, the party doesn't start till 6, but I want to let you get comfortable with the equipment."
He got into his car at the edge of the alley, but before he drove off, he rolled the window down to speak to Y/n once more. "Oh, and I'm paying you $6,000 for this one."
Y/n's jaw went slack as Stark drove off, chuckling to himself.
---
It was through that gig and with the other Avengers present that Tony found out about Y/n's ability to manipulate soundwaves. Tony had made the decision to take her into the Tower with the rest of the Avengers. Tony kept her from Fury's wrath even though she eventually did join the Avengers as unconventional as a plus size lady superhero was. He would do nothing less for the lady he had grown to see as his sister.
That outlook on Y/n was also what made him wary when she had grown close to Loki. Despite being sent to serve Earth as payment for his crimes against it, he was still a trickster. His fears soon proved to be unfounded when he observed the dynamics between the two of them. Instead of Loki corrupting Y/n, it seemed that she was corrupting him in a way. Much like Jane Foster had grown close to Thor, so did Y/n grow close to Loki. She had shown him a wide array of bands and artists that she had favored songs from; Marilyn Manson, AC DC, Aerosmith, and the Beetles, just to name a few. Her favorites soon became his too, and it was common to find them relaxing to seemingly unrelaxing music in the background.
---
Y/n had taken Loki out again, wanting to teach Loki more about Midguardian customs. This time, she was taking him to the American Museum of Natural History, as they had just watched the Night at the Museum movies the previous day. Of course it was different from the movie, something they were discussing in front of the giant Easter Island head.
"You are certain that it doesn't talk?"
"Yes, I'm certain."
"I could make it talk."
"Loki, no." He grumbled under his breath, but perked up at her next offer. "We could buy a mini one at the gift shop and you could make that one talk. We could scare Tony with it too."
Loki grinned at Y/n, who had moved to read the plaque about the statue.
Whispers behind the pair soon drew their attention. A frown forming on both of their faces as they glanced at the couple of girls behind them. One was a blonde, and the other was a clearly dyed red head, each giggling to each other, speaking louder now that they had an audience of whom they were speaking.
"I still don't understand why the Tony Stark would want a fat DJ."
"Yeah, I know. She's so ugly. I think that Mr. Stark would want someone skinnier, some eye candy, not a fat ass who can't control her eating habits."
Y/n turned away, tears brimming her eyes. Loki turned from the two with a sneer, cupping Y/n's face in his hands.
He spoke loud enough for the occupants of the room to hear him, but not enough to be obnoxious. "You may not be as thin as many of the other Midguardians, but that does not mean that you are ugly. You are, by far, the most beautiful woman that I have had the pleasure of meeting. Let me show you."
With that he stepped back, and with a wave of his hand, green tendrils of his magic surrounded her, transforming her jeans and plaid shirt into an emerald green dress to match the dress shirt that he was wearing.
"Now, will you be, as you Midguardians say, my girlfriend, my Queen?" He whispered his last two words as he stepped to his previous close proximity. He formed a delicate gold and emerald crown in his hands and held it between them.
A tear escaped down her cheek, not of sorrow, but of happiness, as she whispered a yes as she nodded her head.
He placed the crown on her head and grasped her hand as they walked out of the exhibit hallway as the other occupants of the room cheered except for the two who had mocked Y/n previously.
Loki smirked as Y/n grinned through a blush on her cheeks.
---
Bonus Scene:
Marilyn Manson's cover of Sweet Dreams was playing quietly in the common room as Y/n lounged on the couch with Loki. The former painting the latter's nails the darkest shade of black that they could find on their stop into a store on their way home. Their purchases were all put away, save for the Easter Island head that rested on the island countertop of the common area kitchen.
Tony came in from the elevator, going to the bar to get a drink before settling down with Y/n and Loki. He paused at the head on the counter, but before he could get a word out to Y/n, the think spoke.
"Dum Dum give me gum gum."
Tony gave a shout of surprise as he fell back, nearly knocking his head on the counter. He swore at Loki and Y/n from his spot on the floor as they laughed from the couch.

Imagine being Raven’s former boyfriend and coming back from the dead, now partnered with Deathstroke.
Anon requested: “Hello, I’m glad you’re back (: . If it’s no trouble may I request a Raven(DC) x Male Reader? Reader is dick Grayson/Nightwing brother and once was a former member of the titans and lover of Raven but was presumed dead after a horrible accident in mission. Maybe he comes back and is now partnered with deathstroke and has a grudge against the titans but later on is reminded of old memories and returns to Raven and they get together again and returns to the Titans.”
.
Decided to go with DC animated for this one. The imagine is a little different from the request, but I hope you enjoy!
~~~~~~~~
There was so much going on at once. Everything was blurry. He could see people around him but not their faces.
“Y/n!” The sound of his name being called brought his attention to someone, their face smudged like a ruined picture. All he could see was that they had a cloak and hood.
“No!” Looking down, y/n saw a large red stain on his torso. Had something happened? He couldn’t focus on that, there were people who needed him now.
The world went sideways, there was a bright light, a loud noise like a roar, and then—
—y/n woke up with a jolt, sitting up quickly and looking around.
The room was dimly lit and outside you could see the lights of passing cars. There was no fighting, no screams, no blurry faces. A quick glance in the mirror on the wall reflected y/n’s face, skin damp with sweat and hair a ruffled mess.
The dream was the same one y/n had been having for two years since he woke up. There was always fighting, a shout, and then y/n woke up. Maybe it had something to do with his forgotten past.
A sharp knock on his door called y/n’s attention away from his thoughts. Grabbing his knife, y/n crept to the door and opened it slowly.
“L/n.” Recognizing the voice, y/n lowered the knife and opened the door all the way. In the hall of the abandoned apartment stood an old man with an eyepatch.
Slade Wilson was the first person y/n saw when he woke up, and Slade had said y/n was his apprentice. It rubbed y/n wrong but he went with it, seeing as his other option was staying in custody of the hospital (they figured he was around fifteen or sixteen years old).
“What.” Slade ignored the boy’s attitude and tossed a packet of paper at y/n.
“Job for you. Pack your bags and head to Jump City.”
<—>
“You don’t have to perform if you don’t want to, y/n.” Little y/n bounced up and down, trying to make himself seem eager to the woman in front of him. Her face wasn’t clear but y/n felt safe around her, like she was someone important to him.
“I want to! If Dick can do it, I can too!” A man came over and placed a hand on y/n’s shoulder.
“Y/n, how about you stay with the lion tamer for now? And next time you can come with us?” Y/n pouted, but nodded in agreement.
“Fine...” The three walked out, and y/n hung back with the lion tamer. Maybe it was for the best, he was still unsteady with the trapeze.
Then the trapeze rope snapped, the crowd screamed, and a shocked y/n screamed for—
BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!
The sound of the alarm y/n had set jolted him from his dream. That was a new dream. Did he know the people from it? Who was Dick? Was it an insult towards someone?
“What the hell is going on?” Shaking his head, y/n headed to the bathroom of the hideout Slade had sent him to and splashed water in his face. Today was the day he sprung the trap for the group his employers wanted gone. It was a group of vigilantes commonly known as the Teen Titans, the name setting off a flicker of recognition in y/n’s mind.
It wasn’t important now, y/n mused, as he gathered everything he needed for the trap. His various knives, a small wrist firearm, a retractable bo staff, and one sword that was a gift from Slade.
Three hours later found y/n in a warehouse, waiting for his targets to walk in. Right on cue, a group walked (or in some cases, flew) in the front door, setting off the smoke trap. Y/n jumped down from his perch, the man he had been aiming his sword at barely moving in time.
“Who are you?” Y/n, dressed in his black and orange suit, just twirled his sword like a baton.
“The person hired to get rid of you.” Y/n activated the robots Slade had sent with him, a so-called ‘gift’ from their employer. The yellow and black robots were high tech and skilled in various forms of combat.
“Titans, Go!” The group ran towards y/n and the bots; y/n pulled his sword from its sheath. The leader of the group, an older man in a black and blue suit, went head on with y/n.
“Azarath Metrion Zinthos!” A girl about y/n’s age destroyed several robots at once. Y/n was impressed, he had never seen something like it before. A voice in the back of his head claimed he had seen it before.
“Cute trick, my turn.” Y/n threw a knife towards the cloaked girl. She moved to the side to dodge and very nearly missed being beheaded by y/n’s sword.
So far, things were not going in y/n’s favor. The robots were completely destroyed and now the group was converging on him. Was there one missing?
“Damian, wait!” Y/n turned just in time to be hit in the face with the hilt of a sword. The mask that y/n wore fell from his face, and silence reigned over the Titans.
“...y/n?” The man in black and blue looked like he had seen a ghost. How did he know y/n’s name? Only Slade knew his name!
The sound of energy charging caused y/n to whip his head around, only to be hit with a blast of blue energy. The pain took a moment to register, but when it did it hit y/n like a freight train.
The last thing y/n heard before he passed out was yelling.
“Beetle, what the hell!
“Sorry! The scarab is still on high threat mode!”
<—>
“Get up y/n. You need to learn this if you’re going to go on patrol.” Y/n huffed and stood back up, dusting off his clothes.
“Not everyone has your skills, birdbrain.”
“Hey!” A man stepped in, having been watching both boys train.
“That’s enough boys. Alfred has dinner ready, go wash up and get some food.” The black haired boy ran off to wash up, leaving y/n and the man behind.
“...” The man knelt down on one knee and put a hand on y/n’s shoulder. It was quickly shrugged off.
“What’s wrong, y/n?”
“I’m not as good as Dick. I can’t even do flips right!”
“Y/n, you only just started. And Dick has experience on his side. Just give it time.” Y/n nodded, his face still showing his disappointment. “Come on. I think we can beat your brother to the kitchen.”
“—we can’t just leave him like this.”
“I know that Kori! But you saw him, he was trying to kill us. Y/n would have never done that before. Especially to Raven; he nearly took her head off!” Raven...why did that name sound so familiar to y/n? Like something he knew a long time ago.
“It’s been almost two years Dick. A lot can happen in that time.” There was that name again. Was the man the same person from y/n’s dreams?
There was only one way to find out.
“...Who the hell are you people?” The two jumped and turned towards y/n in surprise. It was the green eyed woman who spoke first.
“Y/n, do you really not know who we are?”
“If I knew you I would have called you by your name.”
“Y/n, my name is Dick Grayson. You’re my little brother.”
“I don’t have a family. I only have my mentor, Slade”
There was a knock at the door, and Kori went to go answer it. There was a muffled argument that slowly became louder.
“Raven wait—” The girl who had been wearing a cloak entered the room, now dressed in civilian clothes.
“Y/n.” His name sounded so familiar coming from her, like a lifetime ago she had known him.
“Do I know you?” The teen frowned slightly.
“It’s me, y/n. It’s Raven. We used to be...we were close.” He shook his head. How dumb did these people think he was?
“Listen, I’m gonna need a lot more than words to prove what you and anyone else is saying about me.”
“I have proof. And I’m sure Dick has some too.” Raven pulled out a photo from her pocket.
Y/n almost didn’t believe what he saw; it was him, but he was younger. In the picture were several other people (some who were in the group y/n had been fighting) including Raven, his arm wrapped around her shoulder.
“...I don’t understand.” Raven placed a hand on his shoulder, the gesture almost familiar to y/n.
“Whatever Slade told you was a lie, y/n. You were a part of our team, our family.” He shrugged the hand off and crossed his arms.
“Then why am I with Slade? Him coming to claim me from the hospital is my earliest memory and that was two years ago. I think I would remember if I died.”
“It really isn’t a good idea to tell him—” Y/n cut Dick off before he could finish his sentence.
“Just tell me. I don’t like secrets.” There was silence all around, then Kori spoke.
“Y/n, you died.”
“...What?”
“Y/n!” The cloaked figure was calling his name, trying to get him to listen—
“It was on a mission. It wasn’t going well and we were waiting for our ride out. You and Raven were covering our backs when you were injured.” Y/n’s head started throbbing, like the pain was trying to get him to stop remembering.
The red stain on his shirt spread out—
“There was an explosion. We couldn’t get to you in time.” The pain in his head was getting worse, going from a dull ache to a sharp stabbing sensation.
A bright light, a roar—
“I need to leave.” Y/n stood up and pushed his way past the three. Outside the room were the others from earlier.
“Y/n wait!” He didn’t know how he found his way out, but as soon as y/n did he headed straight towards the city.
He needed to have a talk with his ‘mentor’.
<—>
The Titans followed y/n to an abandoned apartment building. They didn’t find y/n inside, but they did find Slade in what looked to be an old ballroom—now converted to a weapons room. Slade was in the middle of it. If he was surprised that the Titans were here, he wasn’t showing it.
“Not that I don’t enjoy guests—I don’t, by the way—but what the hell are you doing here?”
“Where’s y/n?”
“Huh, so you figured out the brat was alive. I guess some secrets can’t stay safe.” Dick stepped forward, brandishing his escrima sticks threateningly.
“What did you do to him, Slade?” Slade fingered the handle of his blade but didn’t unsheathe it.
“Easy; took him from the explosion site, paid someone to erase his memories, and trained him to be a weapon. He’s better than you could have ever been.” Dick tensed up and Kori put a hand on his shoulder. He took a breathe and calmed himself down.
“You hurt my brother Slade. Be glad I’m willing to take you in with broken bones rather than in a body bag.” Slade laughed the comment off.
“Do you really—shit!” Slade jerked to the right as a figure descended from the shadows wielding a sword. Y/n’s sword glanced off of Slade’s armor. Had Slade not moved in time, he would have lost his arm. “What are you doing you little bastard?!?!”
“You lied to me Slade! You kept me from my family, my friends!” Y/n charged at Slade again, the old man dodging and pulling out his sword.
“You’d be a nobody without me! You were always stuck in your mentor or your brother’s shadow! Can you tell me this wasn’t better—not being outshone by them constantly?” Y/n just let out a scream and attacked more viciously.
“I’m going to kill you!” The Titans unfroze from their shock and raced after the two. By the time they found Slade, y/n was long gone. Slade was badly injured, but he would live.
Police came and the Titans met them with Slade. No one noticed a lone figure perched on the rooftop watching the commotion. Except for one. Raven flew up to the roof and landed beside y/n.
“Y/n, please don’t leave again.” Y/n shook his head.
“I’m not a Titan. I don’t belong with you guys.” Turning away, y/n was about to jump from the rooftop when Raven grabbed his hand tightly.
“Come on y/n, it’s just a store!” Raven grabbed his hand tightly and pulled a grumbling y/n into a store that featured dark colored, stylish clothes.
“At least stay a little while?” Seeing the look on Raven’s face, y/n sighed and shook his head.
“Fine. Just for a few days. But I’m leaving after that.”
“Thank you.”
Inferior 5 #1
Hopefully this will be like when Giffen made the Legion of Super-heroes super fucking dark.
How many dicks can you find, kids?!
"How many dicks can you find, kids" is the least quotable line I've ever written. The Kamandi just out of surgery cosplayer winds up getting exploded by the kid in the canvas sack face mask. You know the kid is bad news because he can make people explode with his mind. Although if you ran into him in the desert, you wouldn't know that immediately so I should have stated the other ways you can tell he's bad news so as to maybe avoid exploding. First off, he's a kid out in the desert alone. Kids by themselves are creepy. Plus he's wearing a canvas bag on his head. Canvas is always a warning sign that you might be dealing with cannibal hillbillies, especially when it's covering an almost certainly mutilated face. Also, the kid's canvas bag mask has a big red X on it. Anybody who's been through the American educational system has a strong aversion to red X's. Also spooky: the kid recites nursery rhymes. When you hear one of those, you know you're either about to die or laugh hysterically because did you hear how the Diceman said "cock" instead of "clock"?! How did we never stop laughing in the Eighties?! Oh, one more clue that not all is right with this kid: he lives in Dangerfield, Arizona. That's almost as big a red flag as some sweaty, long-haired kid in overalls from Back Swamp, North Carolina. The story picks up with some nerdy kid (probably Merrymaker since he's the big virgin of the group) whining about how his dad died in The Invasion of Metropolis (what was that? Is that a reference to the beginning of The New 52 when Darkseid attacked Earth? Or is this a reference to the Invasion by the Dominators which was compiled in three way-too-long comics?). After the Invasion, he and his mom moved to Dangerfield, Arizona. Because who wouldn't feel safer in a place with a name that causes constant anxiety over a place where the greatest hero in the world lives?
According to the date on this calendar, the Invasion mentioned was the Dominator one which created the Meta-Gene explanation of superpowers which we recently learned was a computer jargon shortening of the term "metal-gene."
The calendar isn't the only proof that this invasion was by Dominators and not Parademons! By turning the page instead of trying to ferret out what's going on by examining every panel carefully and spending an inordinate amount of my short lifespan trying to guess what's about to happen instead of just fucking turning the Goddamned page and letting the writers explain it to me, I discover the Dominators are leading an invasion of Earth Number This Is Fucked Up. At least I think it's Earth Number This Is Fucked Up because the invasion seems to have worked. Superman is dead and most of the other heroes have been placed in a space gulag. Plus that kid in the canvas bag marking X's on houses seems to play an important role in the Dominator's invasion force.
Unless this is all just a comic book on Earth Number Main Earth?
Maybe I should turn some more pages! But first, I just need to Google "Lisa Loeb's boobs." The kid complaining about the Invasion comic book is named Lisa (no relation to Lisa Loeb's boobs) and she points out to the suspiciously bloody comic book seller with a light sensitivity named Vlad that the Invasion really happened. So I guess DC is simply profiting on everybody's pain and misery. I bet just to make the series even more painful and miserable, DC hired Scott Lobdell to write it. Justin, the whiny kid from Metropolis, is being observed by some outside observers (as opposed to inside observers which would be, I guess, parasites?). He heads downtown where he's about to make contact with Dumb Bunny and Awkwardman! Except he doesn't. Man, I should probably read more than two panels at a time before writing anything. It would save everybody a lot of wasted effort, me with writing sloppy synopses of comics and the three people reading this having to fucking read this. But then I don't have any responsibility to anybody to make these "reviews" shorter. It's not my fault if somebody wanted to Google "Lisa Loeb's boobs" but found they didn't have enough time because they were reading this shit. That's their own fault for not prioritizing their desires! Googling "Lisa Loeb's boobs" was so important to me that I did it in the middle of this review! Come on, people. It's the modern age! You can view Lisa Loeb's boobs any time you want (through clothing, that is. I'm not advocating for searching for nude pics of Lisa Loeb's boobs which probably don't exist anyway and if you think they do, it was probably just Lisa Loeb's head photoshopped onto a naked torso). Lisa has been uncovering clues to the weirdness of Dangerfield, Arizona because she dresses like Velma. Unless she dresses like Velma because she searches for clues the way her hero, Velma, searches for clues. I don't know enough about Lisa's backstory to say. It's possible Lisa isn't even aware of Velma and it's just Giffen spending some easy pop culture capital so readers associate Lisa with Velma and understand her more simply by looking at her image.
Here are a bunch of the clues she's uncovered that I didn't want to try to parse through my digressions and fascination with Lisa Loeb.
Billy Shanker, the kid with the canvas bag who says things like, "Oh! The three little kittens! They fucked their mittens! Oh! Look at the way I hold my cigarette! Boom!", murders Justin's mom and takes her corpse to some guy in a hazmat suit that might be a Dominator but also might be, seeing as how Giffen is writing this, Ambush Bug. Man I hope it's Ambush Bug! Justin returns home to find his mother gone and the interior (five?) of his house covered in red X's. Oh no. That's a really bad sign! Not one black check mark in the bunch! Some people might think Keith Giffen isn't the best artist in town because he's a writer and his art isn't for everybody. Plus he never puts any thought into his panel layout and just goes the same size boxes every time (sometimes in the six variety, sometimes in the nine). I happen to love his art so I'm not one of those people. But in keeping with a guy whose art isn't what people would call great (although those people usually love mainstream great garbage art like John Romita Jr or David Finch or Tony S. Daniel), Jeff Lemire draws the back-up story. I don't think that was an insult at Lemire's expense. If it was, I'm sorry because I was really just trying to insult John Romita, Jr and David Finch and Tony S. Daniel. The back-up story features Peacemaker whom I only remember by look. According to the Who's Who, Peacemaker is a guy who loved peace so much that he realized sometimes he'd have to use extreme violence to ensure it. Also he suffered a head injury during Crisis on Infinite Earths which seems like a weird thing to mention in the Who's Who. "Trillions of lives were extinguished during the multiversal extermination event! Billions and billions of worlds destroyed! People's pasts erased in the blink of an eye! Supergirl and Flash and some other people nobody remembers killed! And Peacemaker suffered some head trauma." I suppose it's important to the character. Maybe it was meant to make him more extreme so he'd be relevant in the post-Crisis era. Peacemaker is on a mission for Amanda Waller to find some super weapon that the Russians want. His search leads him to a bunker with a dead Dominator, a mysterious capsule, and a map leading him to Dangerfield, Arizona! Inferior 5 #1 Rating: B+. I'm a sucker for Giffen stories and Giffen art. And Giffen stories backed up by Lemire's writing are probably even better. This one was pretty good so consider it evidence that my previous statement is almost certainly correct. One thing I like about Giffen is that he doesn't mind writing things that can be confusing on their first (or even second!) read through. He tells the story, makes the jokes, slowly unveils the plot, and to hell with anybody who doesn't want to invest a little time in making it all out. Seems to me, a lot of modern comic book readers could learn to love ambiguity. But they're all so desperate for the interior monologue of the main characters so they know exactly what to think after reading something. They're so coddled that they think subtlety is when a story explicitly shows them what's happening without the main character also explaining it in a monologue as they experience it. They wouldn't recognize subtlety if it...well, I mean, it's subtlety. It should be hard to recognize so I don't know how to finish that statement. Now go read Inferior 5 and hate me for recommending it when you're finished.
'Transformers' reboot superior, Marvel reboot inferior
Marvel’s Fresh Start Reboot used to be a term thrown around in the realm of computers as the act of re-starting a computer when it acts unusually, acts crazy or simply stalls. After rebooting, the computer returns to an error-free state and works as efficiently as it could, until the memory is again flooded and corrupted with leftover data and buggy code. Nowadays, rebooting also means re-starting or re-doing an old media franchise. The purpose is often to rejuvenate a franchise or updating it to bring in modern and younger fans. Reboots can both be good or bad. The ideas involved in reboots can be cool and fresh but sometimes terrible, lazy and uninspired. Reboots can be a product of love by longtime fans of a franchise but can also be a tool by greedy, unimaginative folks just looking to cash in. There are two upcoming reboots that will affect geek culture and the public in general. One is generally welcome while the other is a mixed bag. The Transformers film franchise and Marvel Comics. The news came out a couple of days ago that Marvel Comics is about to do another soft reboot of its continuity. Something Marvel fans and comic book readers are now quite wary of. Marvel calls it a ‘fresh start’ indicating that several of its titles will be undergoing changes indicative of a reboot. The initiative sounds more like a re-launch. Something Marvel promised about a year ago not to do anymore. For several years, Marvel Comics has been releasing new series, new titles and new volumes of old titles left and right. Aside from that, they keep launching major crossover events one after, the other every other Tuesday much to the chagrin of comic book readers. A series of terrible decisions within the Marvel bullpen has resulted in stagnant comic book sales and more often than not, bad storylines, complicated by mishandling of social justice, politics, and diversity which they used to be good at. Every company enters a slump at some point and to get out of it, Marvel’s new editor-in-chief C.B. Cebulski has decided on another relaunch. Not much is known from Marvel’s Fresh Start initiative other than it being another relaunch or soft reboot much like what it did with Secret Wars 2015 which was followed by All-New All-Different Marvel (ANAD). It was a shame that Marvel didn’t completely reboot its continuity after Secret Wars as it was a great opportunity to finally escape their convoluted sliding timeline and bring new readers in and giving old readers something new just like DC did with its New 52. Well, Marvel could have done better than New 52. Unfortunately, Marvel was pre-occupied with race-bending and gender-swapping several of its main characters and seemed to focus more on politics than telling good superhero stories. Marvel is no stranger to politics and social issues but doesn’t seem to have a good handle on those lately. The stellar performance of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is supposed to help boost comic sales, but current returns are the opposite. Marvel Comics was supposed to promote more Steve Rogers Captain America but instead went with Sam Wilson. After the Success of Captain America: Civil War, Marvel comics decides to turn Steve Rogers into a Nazi., seemingly negating the film’s success as if it was a conscious effort. It was a good story but very ill-timed. Thor Odinson would have benefited from Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston’s popularity, but they instead had Jane Foster flying around. Jane Foster as Thor, however, was good storytelling. People are loving Bruce Banner Hulk thanks to Mark Ruffalo, but Marvel readers are greeted with Asian Hulk Amadeus Cho and later had Banner killed by Hawkeye during an obvious cash-in event. And finally, people can’t get enough of Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, but when they pick up an Iron Man title, they see Riri Williams. In another time, these would have been cool ideas. Some of these stories are actually good, but the targeted new readers aren’t picking them up because they aren’t relatable. We don’t mind changes to characters as long as they’re nicely timed and executed. The constant reboots and relaunches by Marvel aren’t doing them much good not just with their readers but with their retailers as well. Marvel has about five Avengers title at a given time, and they hardly last 24 issues before they’re replaced with a new volume. So because diversity and politics ‘weren’t working’, Marvel decided to launch the Marvel Legacy initiative. Legacy meaning returning to its roots and bringing back classic characters. This move worked well with DC when DC merged the New 52 reality with post-Crisis reality resulting in DC Rebirth. The aim of Rebirth was to bring back classic continuity as requested by fans, thankfully killing off emo Superman and bringing back the hopeful Blue Boy Scout and most of all, bringing back good, fantastic storytelling. With Legacy, Marvel also promised not to hold any new crossover events for at least 18 months (Venomverse anyone?). However, five months in, with sales still low and more confused readers after the company returned to its classic numbering, Marvel decided to just screw it and do another relaunch, with many news sites calling the move a reboot, perhaps hopefully. Because a reboot would certainly clean things up for both old and new readers. A reboot will certainly help older readers forget about silly events, silly costumes, dialogue that give nosebleeds, bad decisions and retcons fans just can’t wrap their heads around. And a reboot would certainly encourage more new readers to pick up comic books of characters they’ve just seen out of theaters and in TV like Black Panther the Guardians of the Galaxy, the Runaways and the Agents of SHIELD. Marvel just seems deathly afraid of throwing out decades of continuity. Again, Secret Wars could have given Marvel a clean slate to work with, but the company is afraid to let older fans down. Personally, while I’m still invested in the X-Men’s Dark Phoenix Saga, Fatal Attractions, and the Onslaught Saga, I wouldn’t mind an adaptive reset. I enjoyed reading Ghost Rider’s Rise of the Midnight Sone, Road to Vengeance and Midnight Massacre and won’t forget those. But Robbie Reyes’ Hellcharger is the dope and wouldn’t mind a fresh start with new and adaptive adventures. I say adaptive as imaginative writers can always bring in classic events and make them seem like new. They did those fairly well in X-Men: The Animated Series, Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and Spectacular Spider-Man. So letting go of old continuity is quite possible and would allow the creativity of Marvel to go wild. Not too wild as Marvel’s editor-in-chief still needs to rein things in and act like a miniature Kevin Feige. Or Marvel will just keep the current continuity but launch its titles again beginning with Number 1s, confusing the readers more and making this fresh start seem like another gimmick in a long series of uninspired cash-ins. We’re not throwing shade at Marvel Comics. Without it and its stories, we wouldn’t be having the time of our lives right now. I wish them luck on this little venture. Hopefully, they come up with something as awesome as DC’s Dark Knights Metal. Transformers Overhaul Meanwhile, in the world of transforming robots, Michael Bay’s film franchise is up for a reboot. Should we be happy with this? After the dismal performance of Transformers: The Last Knight, we should be. Transformers: The Last Knight is definitely the worst Transformers film since Revenge of the Fallen. Though it’s sad to know that there won’t be a cinematic follow-up to the Last Knight to completely wrap up the story we’ve wasted our time on since 2007. The only follow-up to it would be the Bumblebee prequel that’s currently shooting. After the poor performance of the Last film, Michael Bay will be stepping away from the director’s chair. Maybe he himself is already tired of filming the franchise because Last Knight was all over the place. It’s a terrible waste of talent of Sir Anthony Hopkins. The franchise itself is not yet out of steam with Hasbro continuing to launch toy lines and Machinima producing some G1-based web series. While I love Machinima’s generation one robots, it’s stories have much to be desired. Combiner Wars and Titans Return are based on hit IDW Publishing Transformers storylines that birthed Hasbro toy lines of the same name. Perhaps the next good Transformers film should be an animated one. It probably wouldn’t hurt as the best Transformers movie continues to be 1986’s Transformers: The Movie. What critics call a 90-minute rubout commercial has become much-elevated due to the bad taste brought about by Michael Bay’s films. Transformers fans continue to watch this classic wishing that something similar would come out, or simply justifying it as the best, giving Michael Bay the middle finger because a decades-old cartoon still bests the director’s multi-million dollar beasts. We Transformers fans now have a problem as to what stories or how to bring Transformers to the modern audience. Many want to see their favorite G1 incarnations come to life, looking much like their cartoon counterparts instead of the inconsistent, indiscernible pieces of metal Michael Bay pushes out. If so, the new film series could be a 1980s period piece much like the hit Netflix series Stranger Things. The film will please Transformers fans old and new as the period will fascinate the majority millennial audience and show off the beautiful-looking period vehicles. Hopefully, Volkswagen cooperates this time to finally give us a Volkswagen Beetle. Oh right, that’s what the Bumblebee prequel is supposed to look like now. Maybe there should be fewer humans this time as it’s the continuing complaint of all of Michael Bay’s films. The first episode of the G1 cartoon showcased only the robots where Spike and his dad only appeared at the end of the first episode. That’s entirely possible within the new film’s first hour. Spike will then play a mere supporting role for the rest of the film. The humans’ main role would be just to run away screaming while the Decepticons steal energy from power plants and to fail spectacularly while defending said plants. The Autobots meanwhile explore the planet and trying to decide whether they should stay and defend it. There’s plenty of ideas to throw around, hopefully, better than Michael Bay’s creative team of Michael Bay, Michael Bay, and Michael Bay. Poor guy has had enough trashing, and that is not my nature. We are thankful for the guy for rejuvenating this almost dead franchise, but it’s time for another rejuvenation. Time for a renewal, an escape from the convolution of stories and metal parts. Best of luck to the Transformers reboot. It will be very difficult to top the 1986 Transformers: The Movie.
Marvel vs. DC
I've wanted to write this one for a while, but I'm going to sum it up before I begin: DC does diversity and social issues better than Marvel could manage in its wettest, wildest dreams.
That's going to annoy fans. So let's even include my personal bias, just as a disclaimer: I'm really not fond of Marvel's lack of continuity, nor am I a fan of Bendis.
With Morrison's New X-Men, Grant looked at the problems which plagued the X-Men and how every time the books would just go back to telling the same stories. He wanted to unshackle these books from that curse, and he set up the means to do precisely that.
He weaved everything together so masterfully, Corporation X, the second mutant boom, the much needed nod to how mutants aren't all just these beautiful poster models, et cetera. Honestly, how can you stand for the downtrodden if you come across as the one per cent?
Being an X-Man must've had an amazing dental, physical, and mental health plan. No one dared to even be anything less than a perfect icon of the status quo, it was basically what Magneto always wanted. It was really quite difficult to distinguish between what separated him from Xavier.
Grant fixed that. Mutants could be less than beautiful and that was okay, mutants didn't always need to have MacGuffin powers and that was okay too. Then, at the very end, he edited the Marvel Universe to remove mutant prejudice.
That's wild.
It's the end goal of everything they'd just been striving for since the '80s, and the reason they had been locked in this neverending cycle. Now the X-Men could tell new stories. Stories about how it was okay to be interesting, diverse, and not just a living god. It was incredible, I had more hope for the X-Men at that point than I ever had.
Marvel retconned it with the very next issue. Prejudice returns, everyone is beautiful again, and every gift Grant gave them was generally pissed over. Marvel hates continuity. They're so wantonly, gaggingly desperate to tell exactly the same stories over and over and over again.
One of the worst casualties of it all was Beast. Before Morrison, Beast was nothing more than a one-dimensional, Silver Age character. Grant gave him a third-dimension, a dichotomy. Certainly, it was a bit of an old trope (Grant loves those), and yet he used it to give Hank McCoy depth he'd never had in all his years as an X-Man.
Bendis took that away. No more feline Beast for us, no more dichotomy, no more third-dimension. Hank is just a Silver Age airhead again.
Marvel is basically Groundhog Day. This is their problem and I promise you this will all tie together and go somewhere. This Groundhog Day syndrome is at the root of all of Marvel's problems, and why DC are trouncing them right now on every story-telling front.
So, they did it with Iron Man, too.
Tony Stark was always weirdly technophobic for what could only be described as a self-made transhumanist. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you can see him operating on himself to give himself upgrades. Not in the comics.
Warren Ellis was the first to set out to fix this -- Extremis. Extremis was pretty okay. I'd say it was definitely a step in the right direction, but Tony still had this technophobic edge to his personality that caused dissonance in anyone who had any minor level of familiarity with technology.
Tony seemed oddly unfamiliar with the tech he'd supposedly been building. Had it turned out that -- in fact -- Tony was just a pretty face, and the real tinkerer and putterer was hiding in his shadow? That would've been interesting!
They didn't go that way, though. So they had to cure Tony of his technophobia. From Extremis we moved onto Matt Fraction's run where Tony really learned to trust technology; In fact, it proved to be more reliable and faithful to him than people did. His distrust moved away from technology to authority, government, and powerful figures like the Mandarin. This provided a strong focus, it provided the reader with reasons.
It reminds me of Mark Waid and Eobard Thawne. Eobard, the Reverse Flash, was just a two-bit Silver Age airhead of a villain. Just evil because evil, no more to it than that. Waid fleshed him out by having him become an obsessive stalker, a crazed fan whose vision of Barry Allen was so idealised that the real Barry couldn't live up to it.
This gave Eobard Thawne a reason to be Barry's villain. Similarly, Tony's newfound distrust of very powerful people and authority gave him a reason to distrust a self-styled, preening, entitled figure like The Mandarin. A character who fancifully imagined himself as an emperor.
It also allowed Tony to explore technology and realise that he wanted to spend more time simply working on it and helping to create heroes to combat men like The Mandarin than showboating hismelf. It set up the scene for both Rhodey and Pepper to replace him as Iron Corps.
Continuity! Evolution! A bold new di--RETCON! Now Tony's a technophobe again who was starkly (heh) terrified of his old technology and went back to sticks, rocks, and showboating because that's what Tony does at Marvel.
And this brings me to why I dislike Marvel. You might've heard that their editors actually blamed their push for diversity for their waning sales. It couldn't have anything to do with this Groundhog Day syndrome of theirs. No, no no no. Of course not. It has to be diversity, right?
Well, no. And, weirdly, yes? You see, their attitude toward diversity is inauthentic. It isn't genuine. I think everyone's catching on. That black kid who's going to be Iron Man? That's Cat Beast, you see? Soon to be replaced by technophobic Tony, completing the cycle.
The new Lady Thor? Cat Beast. Falcon as Captain America? Cat Beast. It'll all revert. It's because they don't actually have any passion behind it. Why did Falcon become Captain America? Oh, he and Steve Rogers had an argument and now he's wearing Captain America's uniform because reasons.
Then he got Cat Beast'd, now he's Falcon again. Steve Rogers is Captain America again. Groundhog Day, everyone! It's Groundhog Day!
Lady Thor? Lady Thor is there because... Um, er, other realities? Reasons? No one really knows, but everyone knows that it's a gimmick. It's not really intended to stick. She'll get Cat Beast'd, and ultimately replaced by Man Thor again.
I mentioned the Iron Corps, right?
This is because of how DC handled things with the Green Lantern Corps. The best example I've seen yet of HOW YOU DO THIS RIGHT.
Hal Jordan? He's being a space cowboy. John Stewart? He's leading the Green Lantern Corps. Your old favourite lantern? Heavily featured in the Green Lantern Corps. New, young, diversified lanterns? Meet Cruz and Baz!
DC does do it wrong, occasionally. I feel like what they did with Barry and Wally was just a massive clusterfuck. That Barry is still present as the League's only speedster is depressing, it's very much contrary to the Lantern Corps and it feels a little Marvel-y, to be honest. It's all about the editorial staff pushing their tastes.
So DC isn't perfect. No. Are they doing almost everything better, regardless? Heck yes! Do you care about social issues? Check out Green Arrow, Batgirl & the Bird of Prey. Do you want diverse characters? Cyborg, Blue Beetle, New Super-Man and many others have you covered. Do you long for nuanced stories that cover a character's life outside of being a hero? Superman has you covered. Do you want old-fashioned superhero comics? Action Comics, Justice League, and Detective Comics have your back.
DC is inclusive. And... AND AND AND... DC never, ever Groundhog Days. If DC does something? Then it sticks. This is why I respect them so god damned much. Even if it's begrudgingly, sometimes. You know? They deserve it, they really do.
The New 52 was a failure, they knew that. So, what's to be done about that? Reboot it and just forget it ever happened? No! Do something really clever and make all continuity matter, forever! That's what DC had done up until the New 52, so it's not that unexpected, but it is refreshing.
They could've been cowardly and just set the clock back to a pre-52 state. They did actually have some pieces in place for that (Waverider, Pandora, et al). Instead, they did something much, much more compelling. They made it all matter. So any new characters they'd introduced and fleshed out? They got to stay, along with the old stable!
And that's why DC will always be better than Marvel. I mean, you know, along with the fact that I don't think that DC has featured nearly as much snuff porn and women getting kicked in the vagina as Marvel has given us (thanks, Bendis). So that's also a feather in DC's cap.
Plus, when a woman is empowered in DC comics, it doesn't just feel like a silly, colourful, 'this is my l'il Universe which is separate from everything else' gimmick (looking at you, Squirrel Girl, sorry). They really are there, in the prime reality, and working to make a difference.
Batgirl & the Birds of Prey is better than just about anything that Marvel has done in its long history. So we're back to being inclusive, can I talk about that some more? Young readers? You've got young, experimental comics with the Young Animal and Wildstorm imprints. Gay audience? You're covered, too! Especially notable, here? Apollo & Midnighter.
When DC does it, it feels authentic, real, and genuine. They put a lot of heart into the story, to set things up. It's a long, drawn out process of handing over the mantle or switching focus. Sure, they screw up occasionally but for the most part they get that right.
It's not BOOP DIVERSITY GIMMICK, which is very much Marvel's schtick. It's why no one is satisfied with Marvel, not even an old, haggard "SJW" like me. I see Marvel's insensitive, tacky gimmicks for what they really are.
If Marvel cared to understand how to do this even remotely right? Apollo & Midnighter, Batgirl & the Birds of Prey, Shade the Changing Girl, New Super-Man, and... Doctor Endless.
Oh. My. God. Doctor Endless. Here's why I'm inspired to write this. It's not just a tacky BOOP DIVERSITY GIMMICK thing, it's not a magical one issue replacement of an existing character. They put in the effort to create new characters that people would care about, it shows DC cares.
Marvel, by comparison, feels like a soulless corporate machine. They're doing diversity not because it's ethical, or inclusive, or it makes people feel good, but rather because they think they're widening the net to sell more of their hugely overpriced comics.
If you replace five existing characters with LGBTQ versions BECAUSE REASONS (without any actual reasons) in a one issue span? It's meaningless. It’s insulting. It doesn't carry any weight or gravitas. It's hard for people to get behind that as their new hero because it all just happened so suddenly that it feels like a trick, they're feeling like Marvel will tug the rug out from under them the moment those characters lose popularity. They'll be gone as suddenly as they appeared.
Inauthenticity, a lack of genuineness, and just an air of being con men. Along with an inability to ever change, evolve, or grow. This is what I think of Marvel as being, now. Like I said, they had some really obvious chances with X-Men and Iron Man to grow. They could've launched off of Matt Fraction's stories to set up an Iron Man Corps, it would've been glorious. They could've had a number of Iron heroes, each with their own fleshed out story which is separate from Stark's own. No tackiness or gimmicks needed.
And you know Marvel is going to just Cat Beast every diverse character. Give it a couple of years and no one will ever remember any of these people they invented over a one issue span, no one will remember that Falcon was Captain America because it happened and it was gone again so quickly that it was forgettable.
It's Groundhog Day, everyone! A really gimmicky, shady Groundhog Day!
There are actually a lot of characters like that throughout Marvel's history, who've either been forgotten or have lost most of their development due to Marvel's love of the reset button. DC only flirted with the reset button once and it almost doomed them. They learned from that.
So now that Doctor Endless is here, they're now here to stay. They're always going to be in the DC Universe. Everything is. Grant fucking Morrison is in the DC Universe as The Writer or somesuch. Yankee goddamn Poodle and Captain Carrot are still present. I LOVE IT.
With Rebirth, DC has made a stand. They're not going to use the reset button to fix the time they -- thanks to some poor judgement -- flirted with the reset button. They're leaving that thing well, well alone.
So while Squirrel Girl enjoys a short stint of popularity as one of Marvel's gimmicks (and this kills me because I adore Ryan North and love his writing), off in her own Universe? Black Canary exists in the Green Arrow, Birds of Prey, and Justice League of America books being generally just the most kick-ass woman ever.
I used to be such a Marvel fan, it's funny. It's just that I began to notice their over-reliance on that bloody reset button back in the '80s. It got boring by the '90s and I was fed up of it. Morrison's X-Men and Fraction's Iron Man gave me some, infinitesimal glimmer of hope, but...
I watched DC continue to grow, grow, and grow. I mean, I'd always had some love for DC thanks to the DCAU and the Justice League, but I was iffy about the comics because they took away one of my favourite characters as a gimmicky stunt (and that felt like a very Marvel thing to do). With Rebirth? I couldn't stand it any more.
I can forgive DC for its one, flawed, gimmicky stunt. The horrible, egregious error that was the New 52. I forgive you, DC. It's okay. It really is okay. You've done everything to make up for it.
However, Marvel is doing reboot after gimmicky reboot all the time. GROUNDHOG DAY, EVERYONE! All of those new first issues, and nothing ever, ever changes. It's just a new issue one to tell exactly the same stories, just with a shiny, new gimmick! And when diversity and social issues are their shiny, new gimmick? I feel especially dirty.
DC is as authentic as Marvel is just a soulless, corporate beast who's only in it for the money. Yeah, sure, DC is a company, too. Owned by Warner Bros and definitely also in it for that money, but it feels different. You can tell by reading the comics, it really feels genuine.
If DC has a book featuring women? It'll often be written (and sometimes drawn) by women. If DC has a comic book featuring minorities? It'll often be written (and sometimes drawn) by those same minorities. This is really obvious with New Super-Man, Batgirl & the Birds of Prey, and so, so, so many others. It really shows.
And there are just too many honest-to-god genuine things going on at DC -- for those who pay attention -- for me to think it's all just a bunch of clever ploys to draw in the money. There's too much effort. If you're just doing it for the money, you do it like Marvel, and you'll succeed all the more. Marvel is simply better at making money than DC comics has ever been.
Sorry, DC.
But DC comics puts out some damn good comics. And they're trying. It's not gimmicks, they are trying and I can tell. I love them for trying.
You need only look at Doctor Endless to fully understand why DC are trying, whereas Marvel is just taking the piss (and your money).
It genuinely reminds me of the Nostalgiasaurus Parx thing I was talking about, recently. Where it turns out that the tyrannosaur had feathers and scales, it wasn't merely scaly as has been incorrectly reported so frequently of late. When people heard it really might've been a Nostalgiasaurus Parx, though, instead of a Tyrannosaurus Rex? Well, it was like their football team had won, or something. Fireworks, celebrations, people crying in the streets, riots. Crazy shit.
I guess that some of us want to preserve the status quo no matter what, right? Some just want to uphold that, keep it steady, no matter how much jury-rigging they have to do, no matter how much Don Quixote-esque self-delusionary nonsense they have to engage in just to keep the world as this overly simple construct that they already knew everything about.
Others? Well... I imagine that this is a scale, where it kind of slides and it has extremes. But on the other end of this sliding scale? I imagine that people will become more open-minded, they'll actually want a constant evolution of change borne out of an ever growing understanding. They can accept that the world is changing around them. There are likely traits and quirks that get swapped between and around to dictate where on this scale a person sits, but that's how ultimately it seems to be.
It also, quite interestingly, ties back into the toxic ideals of perfection that some people have and how problematic they are. And the importance of valuing being humble and understanding diversity instead of just upholding the status quo as some kind of holy default state that must never, ever be questioned.
Marvel kind of does the status quo thing. Yeah, they have gimmicks, and tomorrow it'll be a new gimmick, but they're doing the same kinds of stories they always have. Miles Morales comes along and could serve as the Spidey on the Streets role that people enjoy, allowing Peter to slip into the background as an older person and enjoy a family life, perhaps even take on a team leadership role. Growth, yo! But, no... Peter's still a small-time bank robbery solvin' sort of guy. Which makes Miles Morales utterly redundant, since that's what they brought him in to do.
So Morales was a gimmick. Peter being a teacher, then Peter being a CEO? Gimmicks. Nothing will stick. Ultimately, Peter's always going to be dealing with gang bangers and hoods. He's always going to be stuck at that frozen point in history, never to evolve, grow, or change. And that's Marvel.
Which is... why I prefer DC, and that's that, I guess?
Crisis On Infinite Earths: DC Comics Crossover Explained
The 2019 Arrowverse crossover Crisis On Infinite Earths stands poised to forever alter its reality, and challenge the rules regarding what can and cannot be done with superheroes within the context of several television series. Fans who are only familiar with the TV shows may not know the story of the original Crisis On Infinite Earths comic books, which inspired the event and had a major effect upon DC Comics and the comic book industry at large.
To call Crisis on Infinite Earths revolutionary would be an understatement. While some historians argue that Marvel's Secret Wars was the first major comic book crossover event, it lacked the scope and scale of Crisis on Infinite Earths, focusing on only a handful of characters and originally being conceived as a tie-in comic for a line of action figures. By contrast, Crisis On Infinite Earths was intended to showcase every character DC Comics' had ever created, and was meticulously planned over the better part of a decade.
While it remains to be seen how closely the Arrowverse Crisis will follow the story of the original comic book storyline, it has set itself up in a similar vein by introducing the mysterious Monitor. It has also established similarly high stakes, with Oliver Queen destined to die as part of the coming battle, after he bargained with the Monitor to save the lives of his friends. The event is also borrowing the tagline from the advertisements that promoted the original comics: "Worlds will live. Worlds will die. And the universe will never be the same!"
What Crisis On Infinite Earths Was All About
Crisis On Infinite Earths came about for two distinct reasons. The first was a desire to streamline and simplify the DC Comics' line of books so that it could be made more accessible to new readers. The second was to showcase everything that made DC Comics unique, as a way of celebrating the company's 50th anniversary.
The planning for Crisis began in 1981, after writer/editor Marv Wolfman received a letter from a reader asking why a character didn't recognize Green Lantern in the most recent issue, when the two had met before in a different comic published 3 years earlier. The letter exemplified the reasons why Wolfman felt DC Comics had been slowly losing their audience for years; it was too hard for new readers to become attached to a series, due to the sheer size of the DC Comics multiverse and the different versions of popular characters that existed. For instance, one Superman book might depict Clark Kent as he was in the Christopher Reeve movies, while another showed him as an older man with graying temples, happily married to Lois Lane.
Wolfman pitched a revolutionary story that would allow the whole of DC Comics' multiverse to be condensed into a single reality. After DC Comics' top brass approved the basic idea, Wolfman began to lay the groundwork in the comics that he wrote. At the same time, DC Comics hired a professional researcher to go through every book DC Comics had ever published and catalog all of their characters, so that they could all appear in Wolfman's proposed story.
This undertaking took two years, by which point it was decided that the story should be delayed until 1985, so that its release would coincide with the 50th anniversary of DC Comics' foundation. During that time, Wolfman's frequent artistic collaborator and co-creator of the New Teen Titans, George Perez, heard about the project and requested the assignment of drawing the 12-issue maxi-series be given to him. With Perez and executive editor Dick Giordano assisting him on the plotting duties, Wolfman began to shape the story of Crisis On Infinite Earths.
What Happens In Crisis On Infinite Earths
Wolfman lay the groundwork for Crisis On Infinite Earths with the introduction of the Monitor - an alien who appeared throughout the DC Comics' multiverse. At first the Monitor seemed to be an intergalactic arms-dealer, supplying supervillains with advanced alien weaponry. Yet the Monitor was also depicted engaging in noble acts, such as saving a young girl called Lyla Michaels from being lost at sea. Between his ill-defined powers and the seeming randomness of his actions, the Monitor was an enigma for many years.
The opening chapters of Crisis Of Infinite Earths explained the Monitor's actions, if not his background or the limits of his powers. A physical manifestation of the positive matter multiverse, the Monitor had come to learn of the existence of a being of pure evil who was his equal and opposite - an Anti-Monitor who ruled over the anti-matter universe. Somehow, the Anti-Monitor had discovered that the destruction of positive matter universes expanded his realm and increased his power, leading him to start destroying the multiverse in a bid to become all-powerful.
Steadily weakened by the destruction of the realities that empowered him, the Monitor hit upon a bold plan. He would build an army of heroes, forged from the mightiest beings across the multiverse and set them upon the Anti-Monitor. To that end, he began empowering the evildoers of the multiverse as a means of testing the heroes. Beyond building his army, the Monitor also empowered two champions to act as his agents.
The Monitor transformed Lyla Michaels, whom he had come to raise as his own daughter, into the heroine Harbinger, giving her the power to spread her consciousness throughout the multiverse in a series of clone bodies. It was Harbinger who gathered those champions the Monitor had found worthy of joining his epic crusade. The Monitor also gave immortality and invulnerability to a scientist he dubbed Pariah, who had accidentally developed a connection to the Anti-Monitor after his experiments opened a portal to the anti-matter universe, leading to the destruction of his Earth. The Monitor used Pariah to track the Anti-Monitor's movements, as Paraiah's connection forcibly teleported him from reality to reality, arriving in a universe just before the Anti-Monitor and his forces began destroying it.
The Aftermath Of Crisis On Infinite Earths
In the end, the Anti-Monitor was defeated, but only thanks to the sacrifice of many heroes. The most notable among these were Barry Allen, The Flash of Earth-1, and Kara Zor-El, the Supergirl of Earth-1. In the end, only five Earths survived the Crisis: Earth 1 (home of the Justice League), Earth-2 (home of the Justice Society), Earth-S (home of Shazam and all the heroes once owned by Fawcett Comics), Earth-4 (home of Blue Beetle and all the heroes once owned by Charlton Comics) and Earth-X (home of Plastic Man and all the heroes once owned by Quality Comics).
These five Earths merged into a single Earth with a single shared history, dubbed New Earth. The heroes of Earth-2 and Earth-X, who had existed during World War II in their original timelines, were now the first generation of superheroes on New Earth. The heroes of Earth-1, Earth-4 and Earth-S constituted the new generation of heroes, operating in modern times.
Most of DC Comics' major titles were rebooted, with new origin stories being commissioned to explain the heroes' origins on New Earth. The Superman mythos were changed so that Kal-El was the sole survivor of Krypton, with no Supergirl, Krypto the Super Dog or Beppo the Super Monkey to assist him. Batman's background remained largely the same, but the editors of the Batman titles pushed the idea that Batman no longer operated in the open and was considered an urban legend by most of the people of Gotham City. Black Canary became a legacy character, with Dinah Drake having served in the Justice Society and her teammates acting as an army of uncles to her daughter, Dinah Lance, who went on to become a founding member of the Justice League as the second Black Canary.
How Crisis On Infinite Earths Will Be Different On The Arrowverse
The creators behind the Arrowverse have been building towards producing a live-action version of Crisis on Infinite Earths for years. The first hints were dropped in the pilot episode of The Flash, with a newspaper from the future describing how The Flash disappeared during a crisis where the skies turned red and shadowy demons stalked the streets of Central City. These events matched the Crisis On Infinite Earths comics, where the skies turned red during the event and the Anti-Monitor's followers included shadowy demons.
While the Arrowverse has grown to encompass dozens of worlds, it has not become as unmanageable as the DC Comics' multiverse of 1981. With the exceptions of Supergirl (which is set on Earth-38) and Black Lightning (which was only recently established as being a part of the Arrowverse), all of the Arrowverse shows have been set on Earth-1. As such, there has been no indication that there will be a single, solitary universe once Crisis on Infinite Earths comes to a close, though it has been announced that there will be one new Arrowverse show starting up in Fall 2020.
Given that, Crisis On Infinite Earths could be just the thing to shake-up the Arrowverse and streamline the whole line-up. It would be far easier for Supergirl and Batwoman to have team-ups if they were living on the same Earth. It would also simplify things for the benefit of new viewers if the new universe were to eliminate some of the excess characters and leave Caity Lotz as the only Black Canary. With infinite Earths in play, literally anything is possible.
