I've been thinking about these two points of the costume and set designs for Dead Boy Detectives for weeks and now seems as good a time as any to shout out their praises:
Tragic Mick:
I love Tragic Mick's barnacle jacket in particular. I love the connection to the sea, and the way it feels with the little porthole windows in the shop and the open-faced herring sandwich on the counter.
It suits him so well, and every time we see him I imagine him patiently letting the denim soak in the sea, until he can take a part of the sea with him everywhere.
The Cat King:
All of the Cat King's outfits are wonderful, but especially for what they tell us about how tactile the character is, and then in looking at the sets, all of that is reflected in the Cat King's spaces in the cannery.
I love the contrast that we get of the softness and the scratchy glitter; the way that speaks about the tension between the Cat King's desire to posture/be seen and his longing for comfort.
The softness reflected in the fur details on his robe and the jacket that he absently strokes, the choice of the cream colored turtleneck in the woods, and the fluffy, fuzzy pillows on his bed. The scratchy glitter textures of the top in Episode 4 that acquires a similarly glittery kilt in Episode 7, the ridiculous sequined tiger stripe jacket in Episode 6, and the rough nets and glittery fishing floats that surround his bedroom.
I'm intrigued by the way all of that gives way to sleekness and black velvet and satin and leather in Episode 8. Is that an enduring change -- new life, (new cat shape,) new look? (New outlook, perhaps, with changing priorities?) Or is it an expression of the moment for him?
(I wish that we might have gotten the chance to find out more in Season Two!)

Okay, so we know that Charles' polo goes red>burgundy>black and back by the end of the season.
Because there's so much going on, I always missed the exact transitions. This time I specifically tracked them down. (Apologies if this has already been done.)
Charles shirt is bright red through the majority of the Devlin House, even in Hope's Diary scene, when he opens up to Crystal.
Even when he first swings at Mr. Devlin and gets knocked back, his shirt is red.
Tumblr media
The very subtle shift to burgundy is after he disappears and first reappears in the loop.
Tumblr media
It remains burgundy throughout the entire lighthouse leapers episode and beginning of the two dead dragons.
I finally realized the very last moment we see of Charles in the burgundy is with Crystal. She tells him after the confusing makeout night, "But I think we should be friends," and kind-hearted Charles, of course, respects that and puts on a friendly smile.
Tumblr media
It's difficult to see in the next scene with him because of his jacket, the angle he sits at on the ladder, and the lighting, but it's immediately after that when we first see him in the black polo.
Tumblr media
My brother in death, you are NOT doing well.
Tumblr media
here's another song from Jayden Revri's official Charles playlist, that I think is about this conflict with Crystal:
Tumblr media
His shirt is still black during the "I don't wanna be a bad guy" scene.
After Edwin's affirmation of Charles' inherent goodness, it is directly after this scene that the shirt goes back to burgundy!!!
Tumblr media
He's still wearing the burgundy during the confession:
Tumblr media
BUT IT GOES BACK TO BRIGHT RED LITERALLY RIGHT AFTER EDWIN'S CONFESSION AND THEY ESCAPE HELL TOGETHER!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yo I equally love Cryland and Payneland but the show canonly said "Crystal hit him in the loneliness and Edwin hit him in the loved"

I find it so interesting and lovely how Charles’ shirt color at the start of episode 7 is a deep red, maybe black, representing how he feels about himself at that point. Then he goes to hell. He rescues his best friend, and isn’t that the most heroic thing you can do? On that staircase, Edwin confesses his love for Charles, and if the most important person in the world to him can love him, then maybe he isn’t bad at all. He comes out the door, back from hell and his shirt is back to its bright red. No more doubt.

So I saw this bit about Charles’ costume changing throughout the season just in time to keep an eye out for it during my rewatch! In case anyone else was interested in where the changes occur, here’s where I noticed them! (Spoilers ahead)
Red-> Burgundy: “3: The Case of the Devlin House”, the first time he reappears on the stairs when he’s stuck in the time loop (small continuity error- for the shot where he swings the cricket bat, they used a take where he’s in his red polo, but is in the burgundy directly before and after)
Burgundy-> Black: “5: The Case of the Two Dead Dragons”, it’s burgundy at the beginning during the scene with Crystal when says she thinks they should just be friends, and black in the next scene when they’re hearing the case from the jocks.
Black-> Burgundy: It changes between the end of “5: The Case of the Two Dead Dragons” and the start of “6: The Case of the Creeping Forest”. The ‘bad guy’ talk with Edwin and then when he’s comforting Crystal outside the butcher are the last bits with the black and he starts the next episode in burgundy. (In addition, Edwin flips up Charles’ coat collar during the ‘bad guy’ talk, revealing the burgundy lining underneath and bringing the first bit of color back into his outfit)
Burgundy-> Red: “7: The Case of the Very Long Stairway”, it’s burgundy all through Hell and the Confession, and turns Red as soon as they go through the door back into Crystal’s room.

my two cents on what kashi is that he is krishna. my evidence (as little as it is) is that krishna is often described/depicted as having blue skin and what does kashi wear?
Tumblr media
THISSSSSSSSS (I brightened & over exposed the screenshot to see it better)
AND his rings may symbolize his previous lives/reincarnations, which he calls "adventures" because, just like krishna, kashi is a chill and wise dude. Giving out advice and is obviously way more powerful than people assume

Having some thoughts about Edwin identifying more as a ghost than a person in that first pic. Then I was chatting with some friends in the Discord and we started overthinking things. . .

i think the pictures of the missing child spirits in the lost & found department are the spirits' reflections???
so i just noticed that charles' pins & his earring are on the wrong side in his lost & found picture
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(idk how to get screenshots on netflix so all i have are these pictures of my laptop screen, sorry. feel free to add in the reblogs if you have anything cleaner!)
he should have more pins on the right (our right) than the left.
also it's really hard to see in this picture & not much better in the actual show, but i believe this is his union jack patch? which should be on the right sleeve (again, our right, his left)
Tumblr media
(i'm fully aware that this picture looks like nothing, you're just gonna have to trust me haha 😅)
i can't tell what's above it though, other than that it doesn't really look like his rude boys patch (which should be on the same sleeve). idk what's up with that.
now this *could* be a different outfit, but i don't think so. i can't think of any reason why it would be. it's definitely not what he died in, or even what he was wearing before he hid in the attic. edwin is wearing his normal outfit in his lost & found photo as well (although interestingly not with his brown coat over it. i can't tell if charles is wearing both of his jackets or not though. he's definitely got the black one on, both bc of the pins & bc his shoulders never look that square without it)
his earring is definitely on the wrong side, as i mentioned earlier
Tumblr media
also seems like the buttons on his shirt open the wrong way
(the stripes on the collar are weird too but the design changes several times over the course of the show so i'm ignoring it. his normal red shirt has one stripe, the darker maroon one has two, and the black one doesn't have any as far as i can tell)
i don't have pictures of this one but i believe the buttons on edwin's suit jacket (? idk what it's actually called) are on the wrong side in his lost & found picture as well. that's basically the only part of his outfit that's asymmetrical though (other than a pocket that's next to impossible to make out normally, much less in an extremely grainy photo) so i don't see much point in analyzing it
tldr: if you're like me & you've been wondering why the pictures of the boys in the lost & found department look Weird (beyond the actual quality of the photos), it's because they're flipped!!
the reasons i think these pictures are reflections, specifically, are that:
1. they're flipped, as i just went through
2. ghosts don't have reflections
now i have a tentative theory:
these pictures are from the lost & found department. they're the pictures/reflections of lost (child) spirits; spirits that aren't in a designated afterlife, aka ghosts still on earth
charles & edwin both have reflections in hell (a separate plane from earth)
it seems like they get their reflections back just from being in any afterlife? charles hasn't gotten his afterlife assignment yet, but still has a reflection in hell, which to me implies that he's not considered a 'lost' soul while he's there, even if that's not where he's actually supposed to end up. i'm definitely open to other interpretations on this though.
i also feel like there's some connection between this & ghosts being able to travel through mirrors, but i'm blanking on what exactly that could mean
thank you to anyone who has read to the end of this, i would love to know your thoughts!!
