ā€”on the topic of psychotic Summers brothers, I only just caught up with six months of X-Men after stopping for six months the topic of Gabriel referring to the tags of my last X-Men post a month ago ā€” but I was happy to see Scott's torture-induced psychosis didn't (definitively) turn out just to be that he'd calculated what others hadn't. Yes, the woman he'd accurately calculated would save him was Dr. Gregor, not Jean, but that doesn't change that he remained unsure if Jean was real (and thought she was alive) while the all-seeing Enigma knew on the contrary that Scott was delusional because Phoenix thus equally (an equivocation which casts further doubt of Scott's fiery visions ever being genuine, as Jean's dying mind had departed Scott well before Mother Righteous sacrificed Jean's dead fragmented self for Dominion, before Scott was tortured) Jean ā€” were so utterly dead that Rachel and Hope had to cancel out death to reverse it. Yet Scott, hyper-vigilant traumatized autistic brain-damaged neurodivergent soldier that he is, seemingly accomplished all these strategic calculations while having a psychotic ā€œbreak,ā€ which is extremely in character for himā€”
#I know it still technically coulda been *intended* a shard of jeans unaware consciousness. mayhaps writers lost track with so many threads#but the narrative reads to me like Scotty is psychotic and as usual ignoring non-tactical distractions if they aren't actively impeding him#scott summers#and again- it wouldn't be like chronic psychosis (not just episodes) don't run in the Summers family (see: Gabriel)#it also wouldn't be like TBI doesn't often cause psychosis (ā€œbreakā€ word only used by Dr Stasis' duressed psychiatrist anyways)#hence the ā€œ ā€. and lets not get it twisted- Scott can -at times- be v paranoid. which doesn't always work out for him#words by seaweed#the mini breakdown he has when he realizes Xavier is living people to the Orchis AIs in exchange for Krakoa *chefs kiss*#Scott is: 1) demonstrably hypervigilant 2) canonically traumatized 3) word-of-god autistic 4) canonically brain damaged#5) canonically neurodivergent bc TBI alone is neurodivergence according to someone I know with TBI#ā€œJean is the Phoenix and the Phoenix is Jean- now and forever. But they are like planets orbitingā€”#sometimes close- sometimes far away. In the time of the Phoenixā€™s birth they are as close as it gets.ā€#I have been IMMERSED UNDERWATER in x-men for days. im so relieved I caught up. now: reading six months of spidey comics!#I wanna see my overhated boy chasm#don't take this too seriously I know its just an interpretation. but it's one that Fall of the Powers of X left VERY open

wild that when you miss 10% of highschool just bc you don't want to go you get called in for interventions and several letters sent home to figure out why you aren't going, but when you miss way over 2/3rds of your time there because it's physically killing your braincells to show up, they don't say anything and suddenly don't care about your reasons for not showing up being told to the higher ups

A lot of younger people have no idea what aging actually looks and feels like, and the reasons behind it. That ignorance is so dangerous. If you donā€™t want to ā€œbe old,ā€ you arenā€™t talking about a number of years. I have patients in their late 80s who could still handily beat me in a raceā€”one couple still runs marathons together, in their late 80sā€”and I lost someone who was in her early 60s to COPD last year. What you want is not youth, it is health.
If you want to still be able to enjoy doing things in your 60s and 70s and 80s and even 90s, what you want to do, right now, is quit smoking, get some activity on a regular basis (a couple of walks a week is WAY better for you than nothing; increasing from 1 hour a day of cardio to 1.5 will buy you very little), and eat some plants. Thatā€™s it. No magic to it. No secret weird tricks. Donā€™t poison yourself, move around so your body doesnā€™t forget how, and eat plants.
If you have trouble moving around now because of mobility limitations, bad news: you still need to move around, not because itā€™s immoral not to, but because thatā€™s still the best advice we have. I highly recommend looking up the Sit and Be Fit series; it is freely available and has exercises that can be done in a chair, which are suitable for people with limited mobility or poor balance. POTS sufferers, Iā€™m looking at you.
If you have trouble eating plants because of dietary issues (they cause gas, etc.) or just because theyā€™re bitter (super taster with texture issues here!), bad news. You still want to find a way to get some plants into your body on a regular basis. I know. It sucks. The only way I can do it is restaurantsā€”they can make salads taste like food. I can also tolerate some bagged salads. On bad weeks, the OCD with contamination focus gets so bad I just canā€™t. However, canned beans always seem ā€œsafe,ā€ and they taste a bit like candy, so theyā€™re a good fallback.
If you smoke and you have tried quitting a million times and youā€™re just not ready to, bad news. You still need to quit. Your body needs you to try and keep trying. Your brain needs it, too. Damaging small blood vessels racks up cumulative damage over time that your body can start trying to reverse as soon as you quit. I know itā€™s insanely, absurdly addictive. You still need to.
You cannot rules lawyer your way past your bodyā€™s basic needs. It needs food, sleep, activity, and the absence of poison. Those are both small things and big asks. You cannot sustain a routine based on punishment, so donā€™t punish your body. Find ways to include these things that are enjoyable and rewarding instead. Experiment. There is no reason not to experimentā€”you donā€™t have to know instantly whatā€™s going to work for you and what wonā€™t, you just need to be willing to try things and make changes when things arenā€™t working for you.
You will still age. Your body will stop making collagen and elastin. Tissues you can see and tissues you canā€™t see will both sag. Cushioning tissues under your skin will get thinner. Youā€™ll bruise more easily. Skin will tear more easily. Accumulated sun damage will start to show more and more. Joints will begin to show arthritis. Tendons and ligaments will get weaker and get injured more easily, as will muscles. Bones will lose mass and get easier to break. Youā€™ll get tired more easily.
But you know what makes the difference between being dead, or as good as, in your 60s vs your 90s? Activity, plants, and quitting smoking. And donā€™t do meth. Saw a 58-year-old guy this week who is going to have a heart attack if he doesnā€™t quit whatever stimulant heā€™s on. I pretended to believe it was just the cigarettes, and maybe it is, but meth and cocaine will kill you quicker. Stop poisoning yourself.
Baby steps; take it one step at a time; you donā€™t need to have everything figured out right now. But you do need to be working on figuring things out.

No no I get this. I call this the timothee chalamet effect. Literally any character heā€™s played has that energy, and even him in real life.
May I also bring to the table young Gru from Despicable Me (Iā€™ve not seen the minions movies with his backstory Iā€™m only taking from the flashback scenes in Despicable Me)

i think I'm on Tumblr too LITTLE actually. not ENOUGH lately and my psyche is getting worse as my Tumblr screen time decreases.
as an update for basically only future me propably no one else :
I feel like I'm crying more easily. that's bad. let's hope it's briviact. actually maybe not maybe let's hope that it's the fact that I'm not on Tumblr enough.
kinda stopped taking pics of myself, only rarely and only for good reason or for vinted cause it made me kinda insane it made my body image waaay worse and Ive been in a body image crisis for a while now so I needed to do that. Thank God I only have two tiny mirrors these days and one is in a weird place so I don't remember I own it half the time.
Feel like being an anxious woman is BAD SIN BOOOO. but maybe it's more so misogyny. I feel like my alcoholic father is less judged about it than I am about anxiety and shit but maybe it's because he's a Man Who Can Pretend (is Can the right word. He's just a man who pretends)
trying to do more things concentrate better and maaaaybe that will be the Thing that will help my life get better and all. but also realising how insanely bad my concentration IS. like I tried putting on nature sounds instead of my regular playlist in the morning and now I get ready to leave faster so apparently if I put on nature sounds or piano (I Do have a whole folder on Spotify for piano Ive listened to that for years. Just not while Doing something usually when I'm tired or overthinking) when I get ready I can wake up a bit later. If I want to. Didn't work tho. And! Trying to do like a social media cleanse even tho I hate the word cleanse whatever. But I remember when I didn't really have a phone for over a year in like 2021? or something and I only checked things other than my emails like. once a month and I didn't feel bad about it at all lol it was pretty good for me but I don't wanna go on a whole tangent that could be another post but. it was good I should be minimal about it again I should be minimal about my skincare and shit too but. thats Another tangent.
What's the point in making scented toilet paper paper towels etc. Is it just to make me suffer. When I was at the worst shelter ever they only had fucking camomile scented toilet paper that gave me an allergic reaction (like all of this scented paper shit does) and I had to keep my own little secret roll of toilet paper hidden in the shared bathroom. And naturella is a crime against womankind kinda and by womankind I mean me personally but also im so sensitive I can't even use organic bio pads so :/
Am I regressing anxiety wise sometimes I think Yes absolutely sometimes I think no I'm a brave woman what is the truth?

The Anatomy of Punching a Character in the Face
Tumblr media
Punching scenes are a staple of action sequences in many genres. Whether itā€™s an intense brawl, a quick defense, or an emotional outburst, a punch can carry a lot of weight both physically and narratively. As a writer, itā€™s essential to understand what really happens when a fist meets a faceā€”from the immediate impact to the longer-lasting effects on both the person getting punched and the one throwing the punch.
This guide will help you craft authentic, detailed, and believable punch scenes by exploring different areas of the face, types of punches, and the aftermath of such an impact.
1. Target Areas of the Face and Their Vulnerabilities
A punch isnā€™t a one-size-fits-all situation. Depending on where the fist lands, the consequences will vary significantly. Different parts of the face have varying levels of vulnerability, and targeting these areas produces different effects, from knockouts to broken bones.
A. Jawline: The Knockout Zone
The jawline is a classic target in many fight scenes, especially when knockout punches are involved. This area is highly vulnerable because a hit here causes the head to snap to the side, leading to a sharp rotational movement of the brain inside the skull. This movement disrupts the brainā€™s communication and often results in a temporary loss of consciousnessā€”what we commonly refer to as a "knockout."
Common Effects: Dislocation or fracture of the jaw, loss of consciousness, slurred speech, and severe pain.
Visual Aftermath: Swelling around the jawline, bruising, and possible misalignment of the jaw if broken.
B. Nose: Breaking and Bleeding
The nose is another vulnerable target, known for being easily broken. Itā€™s not just a fragile bone structure, but itā€™s also connected to many blood vessels, meaning a direct punch to the nose often results in immediate bleeding. The nasal bone can fracture, causing difficulty in breathing, and in some cases, the nose may need surgical intervention to reset.
Common Effects: Intense pain, bleeding, difficulty breathing, potential for a broken nose.
Visual Aftermath: Blood running from the nostrils, swelling, and significant bruising around the nose and eyes.
C. Cheekbones (Zygomatic Bones): Bruising and Fractures
The cheekbones are one of the more solid structures in the face but are still susceptible to breaks, particularly from a heavy blow. Damage here can lead to not just bruising, but potentially severe injuries that can affect the entire facial structure.
Common Effects: Fractures of the zygomatic bone, swelling, bruising, and pain extending to the eye socket.
Visual Aftermath: Black eyes, noticeable swelling on one side of the face, and a sunken appearance if the bone is fractured.
D. Forehead: A Hard Target
The forehead is much harder than most parts of the face and is less vulnerable to severe damage. However, punches to the forehead can still cause pain, disorientation, and dazing of the recipient. While itā€™s less likely to result in a knockout, itā€™s effective in dazing an opponent, especially if the puncherā€™s goal is to create an opening for another strike.
Common Effects: Swelling, redness, and potential concussions if hit with enough force.
Visual Aftermath: Redness, minimal bruising, and a dazed expression.
E. Eyes: Black Eyes and Swelling
A punch to the eyes is particularly brutal because the area around the eyes is delicate, and the skin is thin. Itā€™s not just about swelling but also potential damage to the orbital bones. The impact can cause "black eyes," characterized by intense bruising and swelling that may close the eye shut for days.
Common Effects: Swelling, black eyes, potential orbital bone fractures, temporary blurred vision.
Visual Aftermath: Discoloration that starts purple and turns yellowish-green as it heals, swollen shut eyes.
2. Types of Punches
Not all punches are created equal. The type of punch thrown can drastically change the outcome of the scene, both in terms of damage and realism. Understanding these different types of punches will allow you to convey more varied and dynamic fight sequences.
A. Jab: Speed and Precision
A jab is a quick, straight punch, usually thrown with the non-dominant hand. Itā€™s not meant to be a knockout punch but more of a setup punch to create an opening or keep the opponent at a distance. Jabs are fast and can be disorienting, especially if they repeatedly land in quick succession.
Common Effects: Light bruising, potential cuts, and swelling in the area hit.
B. Cross: Power and Impact
The cross is a powerful, straight punch delivered with the dominant hand. Itā€™s often aimed at vulnerable spots like the jaw or nose. Unlike a jab, the cross is meant to deliver a significant amount of force, and when landed properly, it can cause serious damage.
Common Effects: Knockouts, broken bones, severe swelling, and bruising.
C. Hook: Lateral Devastation
A hook is a wide, circular punch that targets the side of the head, particularly the jaw or temple. Itā€™s one of the most powerful punches and is often used with the intent of knocking the opponent out.
Common Effects: Knockouts, severe disorientation, potential for concussions, and jaw dislocations.
D. Uppercut: Lifting from Below
The uppercut is thrown upward, usually aimed at the chin. Itā€™s a devastating punch that can lift the opponentā€™s head and jolt their brain, leading to knockouts. Uppercuts are especially dangerous when they land cleanly on the jaw or chin.
Common Effects: Knockouts, broken teeth, jaw fractures, and disorientation.
E. Haymaker: Risky but Powerful
A haymaker is a wild, swinging punch delivered with as much force as possible. Itā€™s often thrown with reckless abandon and is easy to dodge, but if it connects, it can deal significant damage. Because of its wide arc, it leaves the puncher exposed to counterattacks.
Common Effects: Knockouts, severe bruising, and possible fractures if landed correctly.
3. Punch Wounds: What They Look Like and Healing
Punches to the face leave lasting marks, some immediately visible and others taking days to fully form. Understanding the aftermath of a punch will help you describe the physical toll on your characters more accurately.
A. Immediate Effects
Swelling and Redness: Swelling can begin almost instantly, particularly in areas with soft tissue like the eyes and lips.
Bruising: Bruises start off as red, then turn purple, blue, and eventually fade into yellow or green as they heal.
Bleeding: Punches to the nose, lips, and even cheeks can result in bleeding, either from the skin breaking or from internal damage like a broken nose.
B. Long-Term Injuries
Black Eyes: Punches near the eyes can lead to bruising that darkens the skin around the eyes, giving it a purplish hue.
Fractures: Broken bones, such as the nose or jaw, may require weeks to heal, and in severe cases, surgery may be necessary.
Scarring: If the skin is cut open, thereā€™s the potential for scarring, especially if stitches are required.
C. Healing Process
Bruises: These typically take about a week to two weeks to heal, with the colors shifting as the body absorbs the blood trapped under the skin.
Fractures: Healing from fractures can take several weeks to months, depending on the severity.
Swelling: Swelling can last anywhere from a few hours to a few days, with cold compresses helping to reduce it.
4. How the Punch Affects the Puncher
While we often focus on the person receiving the punch, itā€™s important to remember that throwing a punch can also take a toll on the puncher.
A. Physical Strain
Knuckle Damage: Hitting a hard surface, like a jaw or forehead, can cause damage to the puncherā€™s knuckles. This is known as a ā€œboxerā€™s fracture,ā€ where the small bones in the hand break due to impact.
Wrist Injury: If the punch is not aligned correctly, the wrist can absorb too much force, leading to sprains or breaks.
Fatigue: After multiple punches, especially in a drawn-out fight, the puncher can become fatigued, leading to less powerful or accurate strikes.
B. Emotional and Psychological Effects
Adrenaline Rush: For inexperienced fighters, throwing a punch can lead to an adrenaline surge, which can cause tunnel vision or reckless behavior.
Moral Conflict: If the puncher is not used to violence, they may experience guilt or shock at the damage theyā€™ve caused, especially if the recipient is significantly injured.
5. Psychological Impact of Receiving a Punch
A punch to the face doesnā€™t only cause physical damage. For the recipient, it can have a lasting psychological effect, especially if the punch was unexpected or in a vulnerable situation. Writing this aspect adds depth to your characters and shows that a punch is more than just physical pain.
A. Shock and Fear
Fight or Flight Response: Getting punched can immediately trigger a fight-or-flight reaction. Some characters might freeze or retreat, especially if theyā€™ve never been in a physical altercation before.
Loss of Confidence: For characters not used to violence, being punched in the face may cause a significant loss of confidence. They may question their own strength, bravery, or ability to defend themselves.
Increased Aggression: Alternatively, the punch may trigger a rage-fueled response, pushing the character into aggressive, reckless action.
B. Embarrassment and Humiliation
Public Fights: If the punch occurs in front of others, thereā€™s often an added layer of humiliation. Characters might feel embarrassed, even if they werenā€™t at fault.
Internalizing the Event: The recipient of the punch may carry the emotional impact for a long time, replaying the event in their mind, feeling shame, or seeking revenge.
C. Post-Traumatic Stress
Lingering Anxiety: In extreme cases, receiving a punch can cause anxiety or even post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Characters whoā€™ve experienced significant trauma might relive the event through flashbacks or become hyper-vigilant, avoiding confrontations in the future.
Fear of Future Confrontations: A character whoā€™s been severely beaten might actively avoid scenarios where they could be hit again, making them overly cautious or paranoid.
6. Writing Tips: Making It Believable
Writing a punch scene isn't just about describing the physical action. To make the moment believable and impactful, youā€™ll need to consider various elementsā€”from pacing and sensory details to character psychology and aftermath. Hereā€™s how to make your punch scenes authentic:
A. Build Tension Before the Punch
Foreshadowing Conflict: Build up the tension before the punch is thrown. Is the character agitated? Are there verbal warnings or body language that suggests things are escalating? By slowly ramping up the tension, the eventual punch feels earned and inevitable.
Use Dialogue: A heated exchange of words can make a punch more meaningful. If the punch follows a particularly cutting remark or threat, it adds weight to the action.
B. Focus on Sensory Details
Physical Sensations: Describe not just the punch itself, but how it feels. Does the skin split? Does the puncherā€™s knuckles scrape against teeth or bone? Is there an immediate sting or delayed throbbing pain?
Sound: The sound of a punch can enhance the realism of the scene. A dull thud as a fist connects with soft tissue, the crack of a bone breaking, or the splatter of blood hitting the floor are all effective auditory details.
C. Show Immediate and Delayed Reactions
Physical Reaction: After being punched, characters rarely shake it off immediately. Staggering, falling, or momentarily losing their vision are realistic reactions. You can also show how the puncher feelsā€”did their hand hurt from the impact?
Emotional Fallout: Punches are often emotional events. Show how your characters feel right afterā€”whether itā€™s satisfaction, regret, or shock. The emotional weight of a punch can be just as impactful as the physical consequences.
D. Consider the Aftermath
Healing Process: Donā€™t forget that punches have a lasting impact. A black eye will take days to heal, and a broken nose could require medical attention. Characters might have to deal with soreness, swelling, or difficulty talking and eating.
Ongoing Tension: A punch can dramatically shift relationships. A once-trusting friendship could be shattered, or a bitter rivalry could be born. Make sure to carry the emotional weight of the punch forward in your story.
7. Common Misconceptions About Punching
Many writers fall into the trap of perpetuating unrealistic portrayals of punches. These misconceptions can make your scenes feel less authentic or overly cinematic. Hereā€™s how to avoid them.
A. The Myth of the "Clean Knockout"
Reality: A punch to the jaw might cause a knockout, but itā€™s not always instant. In real life, knockouts are often messy and unpredictable. The recipient might stagger or struggle before finally losing consciousness, and they could wake up with serious concussions, memory loss, or nausea.
B. Punches Always Cause Immediate Bleeding
Reality: While a punch to the nose often causes immediate bleeding, not all punches result in visible blood. Even when skin splits, it might take a moment for blood to pool and become visible. Bruising and swelling often take hours to fully appear.
C. Punching Doesnā€™t Always Lead to a Win
Reality: Throwing a punch doesnā€™t guarantee victory. The puncher could hurt themselves, miss entirely, or end up escalating a fight they werenā€™t prepared for. Additionally, punches to the forehead or temple might not have the knockout effect portrayed in moviesā€”they could just make the puncherā€™s hand hurt more than the opponent.

Me earlier: oh actually I donā€™t think my PMS has been that bad this time around?? Maybe microgynon is stabilising my mood
Me just now: *reading peopleā€™s stories about knee sprains and sobbing from sympathy*
#i had the bright idea to research knee sprains. as if 1) i donā€™t already know enough (having now experienced FOUR)#and 2) that wouldnā€™t cause my anxiety to spike through the fucking roof#there was this one manā€™s story though that got me#he said he went to the urgent care and the doctor was more focused on telling him about how overweight he was than examining his knee#he ended up getting his prescription and going home but then while he was trying to limp around doing his chores he put his weight on his#knee wrong and it TWISTED#and i was reading this going šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜ because i know EXACTLY what he means#the pain of a partial knee dislocation isā€¦ not something i can explain to anyone who hasnā€™t experienced it or something similar#it is. gut wrenching. i donā€™t know how i didnā€™t throw up any of the times itā€™s happened to me#what hits you before the actual pain is the Wrongness of it. it feels like youā€™ve broken yourself. and you feel so so sick#then the pain hits you and all you can do is scream#itā€™s so horrible. the first time i did it i thought iā€™d broken my leg. i felt on some intrinsic level that i had damaged myself irrevocably#i saw like weeks or months of hospital stays and rehabilitation in my brain. i thought i was disabled; possibly permanently#then i went to a&e and found out iā€™d partially dislocated my knee leading to an overextended ligament#and i was back on my feet just over a week later šŸ™ƒ but seriously#this time around itā€™s been 2 weeks and i still canā€™t straighten my knee while iā€™m standing up; i canā€™t put my weight on it#and i canā€™t stand or walk for longer than 5 minutes. with or without my brace#itā€™s scary!! like helloooo. i would like to go back to my (extremely physical; iā€™m talking 7.5 hours a day on my feet) job sooner or later#and i know iā€™m improving but it really feels like itā€™s absolutely minute. like. i was going to send my boss an update but then i realised it#would be exactly the same as the one i sent last week. i still get fatigued if i stand for more than a few minutes. iā€™m still just barely#getting around my house. likeā€¦#people keep asking ā€˜howā€™s the kneeā€™ every single day and iā€™m like ā€˜itā€™s the fucking SAMEā€™ like use your brain.#itā€™s not going to fully heal overnight!! itā€™s not even going to be much different#god i Wish iā€™d gone to the hospital when i first did this. i wish i knew for certain i hadnā€™t torn anything#like i donā€™t think iā€™d be able to move as well as i can if i had. and i think iā€™d have a lot more pain#but SERIOUSLY. i know i probably shouldnā€™t clog up the a&e but is there a way to go to the hospital with a knee sprain after 2 weeks#and be taken seriously. or should i pretend it only just happened.#i donā€™t think i could pull that off considering thereā€™s only minimal swelling left. but my knee does look fucking bizarre iā€™ll give it that#okay if i still canā€™t walk properly in another week iā€™m showing up at a walk in or somewhere and refusing to leave til someone looks at me#personal

actually really mad now bc i just realized that time loop shenanigans would be SUCH a fun and easy way to play with branching options and ive done TWO sv time loop fics and didnt think abot this when doing either
abruptly rather nostalgic for like old choose your own adventure novels where you flip to the page indicated by your choice and like. how hard do you think it would be to rig something like this in ao3
like obv it would be easy to like. be like "if you choose A go to chapter 32" or whatever but like you can embed hyperlinks into fics so you could have it as a thing you click and it takes you there yourself. but then That has me wondering just how far one could, hypothetically, push the limits of a fic on ao3 using just html and sheer force of will.... like that could be really fucking fun to toy with actually....
