Film Genre Introduction
What is this module about?
Within this module we will be gaining a better understanding of film genres and how they relate to the filmmaking process. Beggining with the initial idea and working through the full pre-production, production, and post-production process. We will also be looking at the effects genre has on audiences. Obviously some films subvert ideas of their genre, but in order to do this it is important that the rules of the genre are understood. You have to understand the rules in order to break them.

Projects:
Within this module there are two main projects:
The Film Genre Project (Tagged #the film genre project )
This project is split into four sections.
1. The Film Still, in which we choose a still from a film and present its links to its genre to our groups and lecturers. (This is an individual task)
2. The Master Shot, in which we must work in our groups to create our own still image which will link to the next aspects of the project. After which we will present this still to the other groups and our lecturers.
3. Writing A Script, each member of our group must write a script of no more than 3 pages that is suitable for a single location and actor. This should be a development of The Master Shot and should fit a specific genre.
4. Making A Film, we will choose one script from our group and it will be made into a 2-3 minute short film, using techniques developed during previous aspects of the project.
Sound Design Exercise (Tagged #sound design exercise )
This project will begin on October 1st. In this exercise we will work in groups to create the sound design for an assigned short film.

View from the Moon Pyramid to the Road of the Dead in the ancient Teotihuacán Pyramids in Mexico.Tais Policanti
This story was originally published in Spanish by HuffPost Mexico. A version of it has been adapted and republished here in English with permission from HuffPost Mexico.
Millions of tourists visit the ruins of Teotihuacán every year. They climb the pyramids, walk the Avenue of the Dead, and learn about the spectacular artifacts recovered from the ancient Mesoamerican city. Looking across the vast and remarkably well-preserved stone complex, built by hand by a pre-Aztec civilization, many likely assume that only a powerful despotic king—directing hordes of slave or serf laborers—could have orchestrated the construction of such a carefully planned city. Indeed, this is what archaeologists once believed. If tourists make the effort to visit some of the excavated residential compounds outside the main archaeological zone, however, they may start to understand why such assumptions about Teotihuacán society are changing. For these structures lie at the heart of our shifting perspective of the ancient city: namely, that it was far more egalitarian than we had previously imagined possible.
I began my archaeological career in the 1970s as an undergraduate examining artifacts at Teotihuacán. That first trip to Mexico cemented my love not only for the archaeology, but also for Mexican life and culture. In the decades since, I moved on to excavating Aztec-period sites in the provinces of that civilization’s empire. In 2015, when I was appointed director of Arizona State University’s archaeological lab in San Juan Teotihuacán, I got to return to my first love among Mexican sites, armed with new ideas about ancient cities and urban life. But after just a few years of work, I began to see Teotihuacán in a very different light.
Compared with the Aztec sites I have studied, Teotihuacán seems very strange, and not just because of its huge size (100,000 people, living in an area of close to 20 square kilometers). For one, it’s the only pre-modern Mexican city completely planned with a grid layout. For another, its residents lived in a form of housing—apartmentlike multifamily compounds with white lime-plaster floors, ornamented roofs, and porches—remarkably spacious and luxurious for the ancient world. These complexes are key to the conclusion of many researchers, including myself, that the city’s residents lived far more economically equal lives than any other known Mesoamerican society.
These new insights into Teotihuacán have come thanks to extensive fieldwork on the site. This includes decades of study from archaeologists excavating the pyramids and apartment compounds, who have helped to more fully reconstruct the architecture of the long-abandoned city and unearthed artifacts that are giving us clues about the lives of the people who inhabited it. It also includes work from anthropologists like René Millon and George Cowgill, who mapped the entire city and took more than 5,000 collections of artifacts from the surface of the ground. These materials are now stored in the lab I direct, where they are being studied by archaeologists.
Map from the Teotihuacán Mapping Project, provided by Michael E. Smith.
From these labors, scientists studying the site have been able to present some remarkable theories. For one, we haven’t found any direct evidence of a king. The city’s extensive mural paintings contain no obvious images of royalty, and, to date, no one has found signs of a royal burial under the city’s pyramids. Archaeologists David Carballo at Boston University and Linda Manzanilla at the National Autonomous University of Mexico suggest that this is because Teotihuacán’s government may have been closer to a democracy than a dictatorship: It likely involved shared power, and the people may have had more say in selecting their ruler than in many ancient societies. Researchers like ASU’s Saburo Sugiyama, who works in our lab, on the other hand, think that the city’s carefully planned layout points to the work of a powerful despot whose tomb we have yet to find. However, comparative research shows that gridlike city planning can be carried out by nonautocratic societies. The ancient Greeks, for example, had grid-planned towns and democratic rule.
Other evidence, too, points to the idea that Teotihuacán society was exceptionally egalitarian. When Mexican archaeologist Laurette Séjourné first excavated one of Teotihuacán’s living compounds in the 1950s, she called it a “palace in the city of the gods.” This building—known as Zacuala—had large, spacious rooms with walls covered in colorful murals. Each living area had one or more patios open to the sky, with drains under the floors to channel rainwater out of the compound. Family members were buried in graves under the house floors, often with rich and elaborate offerings. As archaeologists unearthed more structures in the city, however, they found more and more that resembled Zacuala. Apparently, these seemingly luxurious living quarters were not reserved for the elite few, but housed thousands of residents. The Aztec commoner houses I excavated averaged only 25 square meters each (slightly smaller than two parking spaces), while a standard Teotihuacán family dwelling was over 200 square meters (about the size of a tennis court) in a compound of over 2,000 square meters (about one-third as large as the White House). Nearly everyone at Teotihuacán lived in a “palace.”
A fresco painting of a jaguar from the residential compound known as Atetelco, and living quarters in the residential compound known as Tetitla.Photos by DEA/G. DAGLI ORTI/Getty Images and Michael E. Smith.
Yes, there are a few fancier residences, surely the homes of high-society families. But if most commoners lived in these palaces, it would appear that the quality of life for average residents was quite high. The presence of luxury goods in most compounds, including items imported from throughout Mexico, further supports this idea. If this was the case, Teotihuacán may have had the most prosperous residents of any city in the ancient world. This contradicts the common stereotype that ancient peoples were impoverished and powerless.
I decided to test this notion by quantifying the level of wealth inequality at Teotihuacán. To do this, I used a method devised by a group of archaeologists I work with who determine the wealth of individual families by measuring the sizes of their houses. We then use the Gini index—a measure of wealth concentration among a population—to calculate the level of inequality and compare it to other cities and settlements.
A Gini value of 1.0 indicates that a single household controls all of the wealth, while a value of 0 means that wealth is distributed equally among all households. Inequality is quite high in many nations today: The Gini index for Mexico is 0.75, and for the U.S., it is 0.80. Ancient Old World cities like Roman Pompeii and Egyptian Kahun have Gini values of about 0.6, and Aztec cities are in the range from 0.3 to 0.4. When a student calculated an initial Gini index of 0.12 for Teotihuacán, I assumed she had made an error and asked her to check her work. How could a huge city filled with big pyramids and stone buildings be so egalitarian? This must be a student error. Then I checked it myself: The low Gini value is indeed correct. The wealth of Teotihuacán, as measured by the size of houses, was remarkably evenly distributed among the population. Though there were a few larger, fancier houses and some small huts in the mix, more than 90 percent of the city’s population lived in the “palaces” of apartment compounds.
These findings that suggest this level of egalitarianism in Teotihuacán require a radical rethinking of the nature of life and society in the ancient city. Whether they support ideas like those from Manzanilla and Carballo that propose the government of the city was more collective than autocratic remains a topic of discussion. But the discoveries do suggest that it was possible for civilizations to create large and prosperous cities—in this case, one that flourished for five centuries—without the presence of a large underclass of poor, disenfranchised people.
How did the Teotihuacános accomplish this? Can we draw lessons from them for our cities today? We’re too early in our studies to draw definitive conclusions, but it’s possible that the city’s wealth from trading and other economic activity was spread throughout a population that lacked or even actively suppressed strong social class distinctions, and that some of that wealth went into providing quality housing for most residents. But further research should yield insights about urban life that will transcend the divide between ancient and modern cities—and may make the millions who visit Teotihuacán every year, and the rest of us, rethink what life in a city could look like.

JD Sports in talks about Authentic bid for Topshop
The American owner of Barneys, the famous New York department store, is in talks with JD Sports Fashion about joining forces in a swoop on Topshop, the jewel in Sir Philip Green’s former retail empire.
Sky News has learnt that Authentic Brands Group has been holding early-stage discussions with JD Sports about the London-listed company running Topshop’s operations if its bid is successful.
The combination of Authentic, which also owns Forever 21, and JD Sports, one of the most adept players in British retailing, adds up to a powerful contender to buy Topshop from the administrators to Arcadia Group.
Final offers for Sir Philip’s former assets are due to be tabled in the coming days, with high street behemoths including Next expected to be among the bidders.
JD Sports, run by Peter Cowgill, did not make an offer of its own for any of Arcadia’s brands, but is said to have a good working relationship with Authentic and its chairman, Jamie Salter.
People close to the talks between Authentic and JD described them as preliminary and “far from concrete” but acknowledged that JD becoming operating partner for an Authentic-owned Topshop was a credible prospect.
News of their potential collaboration comes as administrators to Debenhams continue to wind down the department store chain, with stores including its Oxford Street flagship now earmarked for permanent closure.
The third English lockdown has wreaked further havoc on the retail sector, with Paperchase filing a notice of intention to appoint administrators last week.
Deloitte, which is handling Arcadia’s insolvency, is trying to secure deals for as many of the group’s assets as possible in the coming weeks.
Evans, the womenswear brand, has already been sold to City Chic, an Australian group, with a number of other parties circling labels such as Dorothy Perkins and Miss Selfridge.
Sky News revealed last month that Next and Davidson Kempner Capital Management were plotting a combined offer for the whole of Arcadia, with many analysts now regarding their bid as the frontrunner.
Mike Ashley’s Frasers Group and Boohoo Group, the online fashion retailer, may also table final offers.
Up to 13,000 jobs are at risk from Arcadia’s collapse, with brands including Evans, Wallis and Outfit seen as less likely to attract bidders.
It is the demise of Sir Philip’s high street status that is likely to emerge as the most enduring symbol of the pandemic’s impact on Britain’s economy.
Image: Sir Philip Green bought Arcadia in 2002 for £850m
Sir Philip bought the high street group in 2002 for £850m, and just three years later paid what remains one of the largest-ever dividends – £1.2bn – to Arcadia’s registered owner, his wife Lady Christina.
For years, he was feted as a high street colossus, advising David Cameron on public sector waste during his period as prime minister.
In 2012, he sold a 25% stake in TopShop’s immediate holding company to Leonard Green & Partners, a private equity firm, valuing the fashion chain at £2bn.
Sir Philip was later to buy it back for just $1.
His decision to sell the department store chain BHS in 2015 for £1 to Dominic Chappell, a former bankrupt who was recently jailed for tax evasion, set off a chain of events which cost Sir Philip his reputation and much of his fortune.
BHS collapsed just a year after that deal, sparking a bitter row about Sir Philip’s responsibilities towards its pensioners.
In early 2017, Sir Philip struck a deal with pensions watchdogs to pay more than £360m to the BHS scheme and which set the tone for negotiations over Arcadia’s retirement fund two years later.
Last year, the tycoon narrowly secured approval for a company voluntary arrangement at Arcadia, but was forced to pledge a package of assets worth more than £400m to the company’s pension scheme.
JD Sports declined to comment on Wednesday.

🔥JD Sports fury as watchdog moves to block deal for Footasylum🔥
JD Sports today slammed Britain’s competition watchdog as it moved closer to blocking the retailer’s £90 million purchase of rival Footasylum.
The Competition and Markets Authority believes that the deal, agreed last April, “could leave shoppers worse off”.
The CMA has spent six months examining the acquisition and expressed concern that shoppers could see fewer discounts “for example from clearance sales and Black Friday promotions or receive a lower quality of customer services. It could also lead to less choice in stores and online”.
The watchdog has now asked JD to offer up remedies by February 25 or it will block the takeover and demand that JD sells the shoes retailer.
JD said the decision “demonstrates a complete misunderstanding of our market to an alarming extent”. It argues the rise of online retailers and big brands selling direct to shoppers means there is plenty of competition.
JD Sports executive chairman Peter Cowgill said: “Just take a walk down any major UK High Street or search for Nike or adidas trainers on Google and you can see for yourself how competitive this marketplace really is.
“The CMA’s provisional findings do not reflect the objective evidence.”
Cowgill argued too much weight was put on a relatively small survey of shoppers “rather than assessing the reality of how consumers actually shop on a national scale.”
Shore Capital analyst Greg Lawless said: “This deal isn’t anti-competitive and to suggest otherwise highlights that the CMA hasn’t fully understood the wider global sports retail market.”
FTSE 100 sportswear giant JD snapped up AIM-listed Footasylum after a torrid spell on the public markets. It listed at 164p in November 2017 and was sold for 82.5p a share.
Footasylum has less than 5% market share and is expected to contribute just 2% to JD’s earnings in the year to January 2020. It was founded in 2005 from a Cheshire store by David Makin, the co-founder of JD back in 1981.
JD has ridden Britain’s “athleisure” fashion boom and was the best performing stock on the Footsie last year. Today it said profits will still hit the top end of forecasts, at £404 million to £440 million. The stock rose 3% to 870p.
The CMA has placed increasing scrutiny on consumer sectors, with Sainsbury’s takeover of Asda blocked last year and a probe ongoing into Amazon’s investment in Deliveroo.

JD Sports offers to buy Footasylum for £90m
JD Sports is set to buy Footasylum in a deal that values the retailer at about £90m – and says the move will provide “significant operational and strategic benefits” to the enlarged company.
Footasylum is recommending the 82.5p per share offer, which represents a significant discount to the £171.3m the retailer was valued at when it floated on the stock exchange in November 2017. Then it sold online and through 61 stores; today it has 70.
The two retailers already have a lot in common. Footasylum was founded in 2005 by David Makin, who previously co-founded JD Sports with John Wardle. Footasylum’s current executive chairman Barry Bown, was previously chief executive of JD Sports for 14 years, while Makin’s daughter Claire Nesbitt is Footasylum’s chief executive.
While Footasylum’s size and multichannel capability has earned it a Top100 place in IRUK Top500 research, the retailer warned on its profits as discounting in a highly competitive market boosted sales at the expense of profits. In results for the first half of the current financial year, to August 25, revenue reached £98.6m. That’s 15.4% up on the previous year. But the retailer also made a statutory pre-tax loss of £2.5m, contrasting with profits of £1.7m a year earlier.
At the time, executive chairman Barry Bown said it had been a difficult trading period for Footasylum, thanks to “tough conditions on the high street and some delays in our programme of new store openings and upsizes ahead of the peak trading period.” Those challenging conditions continued, according to a January 8 trading statement, and the retailer responded as competitors discounted through higher than expected levels of promotional and clearance discounting. At that time the retailer warned that its profits would not meet expectations. Today’s news of a sale comes after the end of Footasylum’s current financial year on February 23, but before its full-year results are published.
JD Sports Fashion is a Leading retailer in IRUK Top500 research. It sells online and via more than 2,400 stores trading under a number of retail names, including Blacks, Millets, Size and Go Outdoors, in 18 countries. Like Footasylum, it takes a multichannel approach to retail: in today’s offer it said that it “embraces the latest online and in-store digital technology, providing it with a truly multichannel international platform for future growth”. Together, said JD Sports in its statement, the enlarged group would be able “to take advantage of business opportunities which are not readily available to either JD or Footasylum on a standalone basis”. Added to that, it said, Footasylum targets a slightly older consumer than JD, while “JD also believes that there will be significant operational and strategic benefits from a combination of the two businesses”.
Peter Cowgill, executive chairman of JD Sports, said: “We are pleased to make this offer for Footasylum, which is very complementary to our existing businesses in the UK. We believe that there will be significant operational and strategic benefits through the combination of the very experienced and knowledgeable management team at Footasylum and our own expertise.”
Barry Bown of Footasylum, said: "The Footasylum board has concluded that the offer represents the best strategic option for Footasylum and its employees. It believes the offer fairly reflects Footasylum’s current market position and prospects on a standalone basis and, as such, that Footasylum shareholders should be given the opportunity to realise value from the offer.”
Edison Investment Research analyst Paul Hickman said that the deal appeared to be a done deal.
“The implied valuation of £90.1m for the company is a EV multiple of 6.8 times the historic EBITDA of £12.5m for the year to February 2018 (taking net cash of £4.5m at August 2018),” he said. “However, it is 30 times the market forecast of £2.8m for the year to February 2019 and 16 times the £5.4m for February 2020.
“With 63% irrevocable undertakings this looks like a done deal.”
Addleshaw Goddard is advising JD Sports Fashion on the deal.

The Time Traveler’s Wife (2009)
Drama, Fantasy, Romance |
The Time Traveler’s Wife is a American romantic science fiction drama film based on Audrey Niffenegger’s 2003 novel of the same name. Directed by Robert Schwentke. The story follows Henry DeTamble, a Chicago librarian with a paranormal genetic disorder that causes him to randomly time travel as he tries to build a romantic relationship with Clare Abshire, who would become his wife.
Filming began in September 2007, originally in anticipation of an autumn 2008 release. The film’s release was postponed with initially no official explanation from the studio.
In the early 1970s, Henry DeTamble is in a car accident that kills his mother but which he survives by inadvertently time traveling back two weeks. Moments later, Henry is helped by an older version of himself who has also traveled back. Unable to control the timing or destinations of his traveling, Henry finds himself drawn to significant people, places, and events in his life but is incapable of changing events beyond the minor differences his presence creates.
In 1991, Henry meets Clare Abshire in the library where he works. She is overjoyed to see him although he is actually meeting her for the first time. Clare explains that she met Henry’s future self when she was a child, and that he informed her then that they would meet in the future, which is happening at the moment.

Happy Valley

One hell of a book This is a fantastic book. The companion volume to an art exhibition that is currently (2018) at the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, it provides an exceptionally succinct and up-to-the-minute summary of what we know, surmise, and wish we knew about the great city of Teotihuacan--and doubles as a fabulous catalog of exquisite artifacts from that site. UC Press really nailed the production, and all of the illustrations are beautifully handled in crisp, vivid color. The essays by major scholars of Teotihuacan--Geogre Cowgill, Sergio Gomez, Saburo Sugiyama, David Carballo, etc.--are excellent and bring a number of important recent finds, such as the tunnel under the Feathered Serpent Pyramid, into the easily-citable light. The essays alone are 200 pages. Go to Amazon
Teotihuacan. City of water, city of fire I went to this exhibit in San Francisco. This is the catalog. Very well done. There are essays on the discoveries there, and a catalog of objects from the exhibit and info about each one. Not an inexpensive book though, which is why I bought it on amazon and not at the museum. Go to Amazon
Five Stars Best "coffee table" book I've bought in a long time. Great photos accompanied by scholarly descriptions. Go to Amazon
