Zounds! Tis the King of Daventry, after all these years!
A portrait of King Graham for the 40th anniversary of the King’s Quest adventure game series❤️🩵 It is my favorite video game franchise and every so often, I return to it. I have such fond memories playing them as a child as well—I was fortunate enough to have an older cousin who introduced my brother and I to them. Some of you may remember the 2015 reimagining, but I grew up with the original 80s-90s games.
For those who don’t know, King’s Quest is a fantasy adventure series that follows the Royal Family in the Kingdom of Daventry. The first game sees the heroic Knight Graham inherit the throne, and in the last (which I actually haven’t finished playing) the mantle passed to another knight. Every member of the family takes the spotlight at least once - though Graham, being the one who started it all, puts on his adventurer’s cap most often.
Though my favorite game is actually the AGD fan remake of King’s Quest 2 (and I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone, fan or otherwise,) my favorite official installment is King’s Quest 5. This is largely because Graham is my favorite character, but also I have the most memories of playing this game, along with KQ6 (which is arguably the best in the franchise, with Prince Alexander as the protagonist.)
TL;DR - I wanted to draw something to honor both this anniversary and a fond piece of my childhood, so here’s the good King Graham👑
Any other KQ fans out there? Let me know! Maybe I’ll do more art in the future…only time will tell!

Tale of Three Treasures
DISCLAIMER: I have a habit of feeling bad to invalidate a timeline variant so I just make really weird ways to merge the timelines together
The first part of this story comes from the 3 AGDI remakes of the first three King’s Quest games, and uses years before and after Graham’s coronation (BGC- before graham’s coronation and GC- graham’s coronation).
Due to a scientific revolution in the world that we call ours, humans, influenced by the words of intellectuals bound by their jealousy to those with magic, started to hunt magical beings to test their reality. All found solace in the wise and powerful mage Crispin, who vowed to find a solution. In 1695 BGC, using his magic, he was able to shift the axis of space (all worlds lie on a 2 dimension graph of time and space) and thus create a new world. To aid him to replenish civilization, Crispin drew magic from each star and personified it. He trained them all in magic, and they became The First Mages, from whom all the other mages (e.g. Manannan, Mordack, Hagatha, etc.) are descended from. He soon announced his prodigy, Legenimor, who was born from the North Star, as his successor and King of All the Land.
Legenimor ruled piously after Crispin’s retirement and created treasures to aid him in his rule, naming his serene kingdom, Serenia. This did not stop the other mages from harvesting their jealousy, and waging a war, known as the Grand War. After 715 years of violence, during which Legenimor’s general and younger brother Morgeilen (born from the little star next to the North Star) disappeared, Legenimor decided to end the war completely. In 980 BGC, he hid all his treasures and created one last one, a pair of hands made of emerald, which he held up, and through that, he relinquished his magic back to the heavens from which he was born.
Without his superpower, Legenimor was murdered and the war had finally come to an end. Before he died, Legenimor bewitched the crown of his kingdom to only fit the head of the true king, prompting the advisors to check the head of every figurehead in the court, until it finally fit the head of Grantithor, the farmer turned First Knight of Serenia. He was crowned king and aimed to rule with equality and justice for both the powerful mages as well as the helpless citizens harmed by the war. In honor of the citizens, he erected a well where the first tree in Serenia was planted, coincidentally by Grantithor’s father Dafa. He thus split the continent into half, keeping the western side as Serenia, and renaming the eastern side and the continent as Dafa’s tree, which became Daventry.
Grantithor’s many kids spread to new lands and founded new kingdoms, like Kolyma, Llewdor, Tamir, and more. He then decreed that if the king did not have any biological heirs, the throne should go to the First Knight if they prove worthy. To back up his decree, he married his eldest daughter to his First Knight, born from the House of Cracker. Their descendants continued to be First Knights to the kings for centuries. The emerald hands, entitled The Item, alongside a green healing orb and the Chest of Gold, an everlasing chest always filled with gold, were buried with Legenimor, but stolen by the pirate, Saren.
In 900 BGC, Grantithor’s great-grandson, King John the Compassionate, accompanied by his second cousin, Sir Robin Cracker, defeated a bandit who, through a series of thefts stemming from Saren, obtained the Chest of Gold.
Legenimor gave his magic shield to the titan Oceanus for protection. Oceanus passed it on to his son, Asopus, who lended it to his daughter Aegina for protection from teh lust of Zeus. She was ultimately kidnapped by Zeus and given her own island, named Aegina, where she gave birth to Zeus’s son and teh first king of Aegina, Aeacus, who inherited the shield and passed it down to his son Peleus. Peleus married the Nereid Thetis, and they had Achilles, who inherited the shield. Achilles and his lover Patroclus were killed in the Trojan War, but were honored by naming the shield the Shield of Achille. For their valor in the Trojan War on the trojan side, Grantithor’s 16x great-grandson, Cassux, and his contemporary First Knight, Sir Polltor Cracker, were given the shield in 520 BGC.
Finally, Legenimor sent his friend Merlin back to our world, with the Magic Mirror, where Merlin died at the hands of his unreciprocated lover, Nimue. in 220 BGC, Grantithor’s 28x great-grandson, King Anthrovale, and his First Knight, Sir Gallevain Cracker, excavated the cave and found Merlin’s coffin, where they retrieved the Mirror.
The Crackers continued to serve the House of DeVentry as First Knight, until a romantic mixup in Llewdor years later...

This is such a stupid thing, but I've been searching for *ages* trying to find these game files, and I'm hoping somebody will understand, or know the game version I'm talking about.
So King's Quest 2. The AGDI remake (when they were called Tierra) was originally released in 2002. V2.0 was released in 2003, and then they did a bigger update (v3.0) that released in 2009.
There are some *sliiiiggghhhttt* differences between verisons 2.0 and 3.0. The biggest one being the full narration, but some incredibly minor things, like some changed artwork and voices for some characters.
The only solid example I can currently find:
This is the Door of Destiny from how I remember him, from the 2.0 version.
And this is what he looks like in version 3.0.
Long story short, I've been digging so deep to try to find a download, or somebody with a backup of the older 2.0 files, but literally nobody seems to have it anymore. I used to play this SO fucking much as a kid, and the newer update is still incredibly good, but the few things that got changed are driving me bonkers, I feel like I'm being gaslit because I'm like "I KNOW this isn't how it was the last time I played this."
So anyways, if anybody knows how to find or just happens to have the pre-2009 King's Quest II remake files, PLEASE hmu.

Are you upset with your damaged hair? You have undergone several hair treatments! But no one works! Then why not try Olapex at least once? In Daventry, you will find many hair saloons offering this effective hair treatment at an affordable price. 2+3 Trust Issues and Set Up for Failure
This one is a two-in-one. I got halfway through writing for just trust issues before I realize that, hey, wait a minute, this can also be set up for failure! And so it is. Warnings for Major Character Death and Violence.
Here's some recommended listening (I found the King's Chill albums the other day and I have been enjoying them very much)
Summary: It's the end of the latest Knight's Tourney in Daventry. King Graham is here to appoint the victor as the newest knight for the kingdom. It's also the anniversary of his son's kidnapping but that has nothing to do with knighting this young man who refuses to take his helmet off, one with a bright green feathery plume.
"...And thus, you are now a knight of Daventry." The King stated, officially ending the latest Knight's Tourney. He managed to crack a brief smile before it died back down again, today was the anniversary. "Do you have any words as our latest knight?"
The newly minted knight fumbled with his helmet. "Uh, yes, but I'd rather say it. Face to face."
"Go ahead."
The young man's helmet was off now. He had familiar eyes. "...I'm sorry about this, really."
"What are you sorry for?" King Graham asked. The young knight looked like he could've been Alexander, grown up.
He gripped something in his offhand, the other holding his helmet. "...This." He said, stabbing Graham. It went in as smooth as one of the Hobblepots cheesecakes. But without the creamy, cheesy goodness of eating a cheesecake, and all of the regret of eating an entire one in a single sitting.
Graham grasped at the wound. "...What? Why would you do this?"
"I need my freedom. This is how I get it."
"From who? If you needed help you could've asked for help, we would have helped you!" Graham's face was drawn tight in pain now.
"You couldn't have helped me. He would've found out no matter what we do to hide it." Did he stab the King right? He was still standing, and talking. Doesn't stabbing people kill them quickly?
"Who?" Graham asked again, he was flagging now. Starting to sag.
"...You're dying either way. So. I guess I can tell you. Manannan." Gwydion said. He was feeling conflicted now, this wasn't quite how it was supposed to go.
Shock entered the king's face. Manannan. The first time he hears of that wizard in nearly 17 years and he's dying from a stab wound. His vision was getting hazy now. He looked at the young man again. "What... Is your name?" he asked.
"Gwydion. Shouldn't you know that already?" He snapped back in return.
Graham's already pale face paled further. "Alexander?" he whispered. Then he collapsed. Finally. Finally, his freedom was at hand.
The king was dead now. Gwydion let his helmet fall to the ground. "Manannan, I want my freedom now." He said to the shocked arena. The horrified queen and princess, the knights who were already rushing in his direction too late to do anything. He broke a figurine that he had carried this entire time, that Manannan had said would summon him.
"Manannan. My freedom. The king is-" he said again, getting bodily tackled by a dozen royal guards.
The telltale sounds of Manannan teleporting in silenced the arena. This silence was broken by laughter. This was the first time Gwydion had ever heard Manannan laugh. The knights atop him suddenly tensed. "So he is!" the wizard laughed.
"It's Manannan! Get him!" One of the knights yelled. There was another crush as the knights swarmed off of him to rush Manannan. Screaming resulted.
"Did you really think that work on me? It didn't the first time." Manannan mocked. Knights went flying with a flourish, or were otherwise killed. "Now, back to business. Gwydion, did he see your face before his royal stubborness kicked it?"
Gwydion got back up. "Yes."
"Good, good. Now I believe I promised you something."
"My freedom."
"Before I can grant that, just one more thing." He turned to face the still petrified queen and princess, oh, magically restrained queen and princess. If looks from normal people could kill, he and Manannan both would be very dead. "Oh Valanice, and little Rosella too, my, how you've grown. I'd say this was a fantastic family reunion, wouldn't you?"
Gwydion saw a realization come across the queen's face. She spoke. "Alexander?" He didn't understand. What was it with these people and that name?
"My name is Gwydion." He looked back at Mannanan. "What are they talking about?"
"Why, that you have two names. I may be biased but I much prefer Gwydion over Alexander."
"I don't understand."
"That's fine, since you won't have to worry about that once I grant you your... freedom." His face had that expression again, like he knew a secret joke that you didn't. Gwydion didn't really care. He wanted to never see the wizard again.
"Please grant it to me already then." he asked.
"Well, you asked for it. Don't say I didn't warn you before." He cast a spell at Gwydion, who then clutched at his chest and slowly went back down.
"What. What did you do-?" He asked, gasping for breathe. "This isn't freedom, it's-"
"Death, yes. But! What is death if not freedom? Freedom from me, freedom from life, from expectations. From the consequences of messing around with my magic. You know, if you hadn't've messed with my laboratory I would have granted you living freedom. Made you a king! But it just goes to show that I can't trust this blood line anymore than I can trust a wind spirit to know to wash colors separate from whites." He leaned in to whisper the last words Gwydion would ever hear. "This is exactly what you wanted, was it worth it?" Manannan asked rhetorically, knowing that the spell he used to kill Alexander would have mostly run its course by now. He looked back up at Valanice and Rosella, and with a wave of his hand released them from their magical restraints. "Well that was fun, let's never do this again. Ciao!"
He left as suddenly as he came. This time, with more corpses than there were the last time he had visited Daventry.
