8 New(ish) Things To Stream During Quarantine
HI EVERYBODY!!! I’M BACK! I’ve been so distracted by what’s going on (like a fucking PANDEMIC!?!!!) that I haven’t written in a bit and Im so sorry! To be honest I’ve been playing so much Animal Crossing that I don’t have time to focus on shows that require a lot of attention so technically I didn’t have much to write about. It’s kind of awesome though that some of my old posts still get notes everyday I’m glad people could be discovering some shows or movies they haven’t seen yet! Any who, I made a list of some newish stuff I’ve been streaming that I liked I wish I had more to add but I promise I will get off my Nintendo Switch and binge some foreign shows and new stuff so I can tell y’all about it. Also, HBO Max is FINALLY out so when they come out with more original content I’ll be sure to post about it! Ok enjoy the list and remember THE 3RD AND FINAL SEASON OF THE NETFLIX ORIGINAL SHOW “DARK” COMES OUT ON JUNE 27TH! ITS THE BEST SHOW I HAVE EVER SEEN SO FUCKING WATCH IT!!! Okay now I’m done for real. I love y’all enjoy the list! Besos!
*- Netflix original
1. Big Time Adolescence (2020)
Pete Davidson stars in this film where he befriends his ex girlfriend’s little brother (Griffin Gluck). The movie is hysterical but also heartwarming. I only watched for Machine Gun Kelly but I’m glad I did.
Where to stream: Hulu
2. Duncanville (Season 1)
Fox’s newest animated show fits in perfectly with the Sunday animated line up. Duncanville follows teenage Duncan and his kooky family. Not only did Amy Poehler create the show she also writes it and voices Duncan and Duncan’s mom! If you’re a Bob’s Burgers fan you’ll love this.
Where to stream: Hulu
3. Parasite (2019)
All the hype surrounding this film is real. Please watch this Academy Award winning film (for best picture!!!) right fucking NOW.
Where to stream: Hulu
4. Never Have I Ever (Season 1)*
Mindy Kailing created and wrote this teen comedy about an Indian girl named Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) who just wants to lose her virginity. Not only do we finally have a teen brown girl at the center of the show she also has two best friends of color with actual depth! Please watch the show it’s such a gem!
Where to stream: Netflix
5. Hollywood (2020)*
Ryan Murphy’s reimagining of old Hollywood isn’t his flashiest project but it’s definitely his most heartwarming one. This miniseries stars Darren Criss, Laura Harrier, The Politicians David Corenswets, and show stopping newcomer Jeremy Pope.
Where to stream: Netflix
6. The Midnight Gospel (Season 1)*
Pendleton Ward, creator of my favorite animated series Adventure Time, has created a whole new show for Netflix about a kid named Clancy who interviews people in dying worlds for his space cast. The animation is fun because there’s always something going on but the dialogue is basically as if you’re listening to a podcast. The show goes over so many topics and it really gets you thinking. I hate podcasts but I loved The Midnight Gospel and I pray it gets renewed.
Where to stream: Netflix
7. Trolls World Tour (2020)
I’m a Trolls stan and the fact that we can rent the sequel from the comfort of our homes is honestly the only thing giving me serotonin these days. If you need a laugh or want to jam out this is the movie for you. Stormi Webster approved.
Where to watch: Available anywhere you can rent films
8. Solar Opposites (Season 1)
With this original show Hulu is finally ready to play ball when it comes to the streaming wars. From the creators of Rick and Morty comes another balls to the walls insane show. A group of four aliens migrate to earth and try to fit in. It’s only eight episodes long but I need a season two like now! There’s also a subplot I’m not gonna give away but I was so invested in it I’m so excited to see what happens.
Where to stream: Hulu

History of Lip Sync & Industry Examples In the process of lip synchronization, the animator must have an understanding of how phonetics work, and how our mouths are positioned in order to produce certain sounds which are represented by letters and letter combinations. In this post, I want to briefly delve into the history of the technique and the basics of lip syncing for animation.
What is lip sync? Lip sync, which is short for lip synchronization, is a technical term for matching a speaking or singing person’s lip movements with prerecorded sung or spoken vocals that listeners hear through an audio output system. The term can refer to any number of different techniques and processes from film production, concerts, and dubbing, but for the purposes of this assignment, we are exploring the use of lip sync in animation.
This is the art of making an animated character appear to speak, to a pre-recorded track of dialogue or sound. This technique of making an animated character appear to talk involves a range of key ideas, but mainly figuring out the timings of the speech and the actual animation of the lips and mouth to match the dialogue track.
A Brief History Historically, the earliest examples of lip synchronization in animation were attempted by Max Fleischer in the 1926 short My Old Kentucky Home, but for obvious reasons (racial discrimination and insensitivity) I will not show it here. The technique, however, has since been refined and honed since this early example and is a staple of the animation industry to this day. The technique is used by all types of animated works, from feature films such as Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs to American animated sitcoms like The Simpsons and Family Guy.
Lip synchronization typically begins by analyzing sound frame by frame, a method which dates back to the late 1920s with the origin of sound cartoons. Traditionally, this would involve transferring the dialogue tracks for animated films ‘onto sprocketed optical sound film’. The holes on this film material would exactly match ‘with those of the motion picture film’, which enabled sound and image to be mechanically locked together on editing and sound mixing machines.
This process is called 'track reading'. The dialogue track is analyzed and the information is charted up onto camera exposure sheets, sometimes called 'dope sheets' or 'camera charts', as a guide for the animator. With contemporary animation, we have the ability to analyze a sound using digital sound tools such as Audacity or the sound workspace within TVPaint itself. These allow us to scrub back and forth over ‘a graphical depiction’ of a sound wave, and see where the sound begins and finishes.
Industry Practices Approaches to the lip synchronization process can be just as varied as the character designs themselves: simple, elaborate, restrained or exaggerated. Every individual animator’s approach to the process is different, so in larger studios where more than one animator is in charge of the same character, extensive notes, drawings and sketches will be created to instruct the rest of the team how to animate the mouth consistently throughout a series. This can be seen in Adventure Time, where creator Pendleton Ward and lead designers for the show instruct animators working overseas how to keep protagonist Finn’s mouth shapes on-model at all times. For a large production like Adventure Time where the animation is done externally, this is a key industry practice.
Often, the way a mouth works is determined by the character’s head design: animators use tricks and techniques to cut down the workload by subtly separating the head or just the mouth, in the form of beards, necklaces or neckties that allow animators to work solely on the mouth and faces during the lip sync process. Sometimes, the mouth is hidden behind a wiggling mustache or replaced altogether with a mask in the example of The Spectacular Spider-Man animated series.
The Importance of Gesture Something that contemporary animation, in particular, has been found guilty of doing is the use of talking heads: this is commonly seen in shows such as Family Guy and similar digital 2D animated sitcoms where the characters don’t move and simply talk to each other. This can quickly get boring and is something I am going to try and consciously avoid during this project. A solution to this problem would be the use of gestures and body movement. Despite the fact we are encouraged to solely focus on the lip sync itself, gestures and body movements can communicate something about the personality of a character and the way it is feeling to an audience. This also makes for something much more interesting and engaging to watch, rather than simply watching the mouth. Small movements and gestures such as shrugging the shoulders or pointing can communicate ideas of emotion and what the character is thinking, helping sell the performance to the viewer.
Economical Animation When a character’s head remains static during a passage of dialogue, animators will take this opportunity to simply cycle the mouths onto a different layer, and place these onto of a character without a mouth. This is a key industry practice and saves lots of time and energy on the animator’s part. It’s important to maintain the same sort of perspective view in the mouth, otherwise, it will look separated from the face.
A more effective and engaging technique is treating the whole head as the lip-sync component. This allows movement of the bottom jaw that can actually open and drops lower, and also allows animators to work stretch and squash into the entire face. It is ‘rare for one mouth position to be onscreen for less than two frames’, as animating on ones tends to look far too quick. This is a lesson that I had to learn myself in my initial response to the assignment, animating the sequence frame by frame in TVPaint.
The Hold One important principle of modern lip sync animation is ‘the hold’. This is a technique which describes the animation of the body, which is held for numerous frames whilst the lip sync takes place. As a rule, animators work on gestures and body language first, and then go back and add the mouth in afterward. This will inform my own process in TVPaint, as I will begin the animation by developing the body movements first before moving onto the actual mouth shapes.
Whilst classic Disney animated films featured characters that rarely actually stopped moving, it is far more commonplace to have still illustrations be held for multiple frames whilst the lip sync animation takes place. This saves time and effort but also places the focus on a handful of expressive gestural poses that work to convey the emotion of the scene. This approach can be seen in almost any animated television production, we can see this in the example from Regular Show, in which only select parts of the two main characters move. The face and arms are animated, but the body stays still as to not detract from the lip sync.
As a rule, lip synchronization is ‘best underplayed’, with the exception of important accents and vowel sounds. Emphasis on the size and mechanics on the mouth can detract from a good lip-sync animation - this is an idea that I will be considering with my own animation.
It’s in the Eyes A final interesting idea that I found is the focus on the eyes of the characters: ‘the audience often watch the eyes, so emphasis and accents can be initiated here’ before the rest of the face and mouth is considered. It’s often said that the eyes are the window to the soul: it’s a powerful way of getting a character to communicate their inner feelings without actually saying anything, and even the act of thinking of words can speak can be expressed in the eyes. This is something that I found to be true in my own video reference for this assignment, as I observed how my eyes would move around as I was delivering the dialogue, in character.
Summary Through my own independent research into the history of lip synchronization in animation and other online sources presented below, I have been able to really develop my understanding of this crucial animation process. Having looked at a few industry examples here, next I want to continue this line of inquiry further and explore some actual tutorials by animators on some more basic principles of lip synchronization for animation.

Dysfunction at DC Veterans Medical Center Shows Rot in Federal Workforce
When the majority of Americans look at Washington, they see a broken, bureaucratic system that far too often fails to defend their interests.
Last week, we all learned that the consequences of that failure can potentially be deadly.
The inspector general for the Department of Veterans Affairs announced Wednesday that the Washington, D.C. VA medical center, which serves more than 98,000 veterans, was putting many of those veterans at “unnecessary risk”—risk stemming from use of dirty equipment, lack of necessary medical supplies, and the possible use of recalled gear.
What made this announcement especially noteworthy was that it was an “interim summary.” In other words, the inspector general believed the crisis at the D.C. VA was so bad that he couldn’t wait to conclude the investigation before notifying veterans.
Among the inspector general’s findings:
Since January 2014, the D.C. VA had 194 patient safety reports regarding “the unavailability of equipment or supplies.”
In June 2016, surgical staff used expired equipment during a procedure because of “the lack of an inventory management program.”
Of 25 sterile storage areas that were inspected, 18 were found to be dirty, leading the inspector general to note that the center “lacks assurance that sterile supplies maintained their integrity.”
To make things worse, the inspector general also found that more than 27,000 items purchased by the facility—worth more than $150 million—were unaccounted for as of March of this year.
These findings are truly horrifying. But sadly, they are nothing new for the VA.
Dirty equipment, lack of proper procedures, and waste of taxpayer resources have been commonplace across the VA in recent years. But another common thread, which many veterans and their loved ones recognize, is the failure of the VA to hold its leaders accountable.
Brian Hawkins, the medical center’s director, was relieved from his position and placed on “administrative duty” after the inspector general released his report—though it is unknown what this designation entails, or whether Hawkins will have anything to do with patient care in the role.
>>> Fixing the VA for Our Veterans: What Will Trump’s Pick Need to Do?
If history is any guide, Hawkins will also continue to collect a substantial salary while performing his administrative responsibilities, and will likely retire with a handsome federal benefits package.
Recent experience shows this to be the case.
Sharon Helman, the director of the infamous Phoenix VA hospital, was fired in November 2014 following the wait list scandal that broke nationwide in the spring of 2014.
Upon appeal, an administrative judge upheld her firing not because she oversaw the creation of secret wait lists on which veterans languished and even died, or because she allowed retaliation against whistleblowers seeking to protect veterans, but because she improperly accepted Beyonce concert tickets from a lobbyist.
While federal ethics laws are important, logic suggests being responsible for veterans’ deaths should be more of a terminable offense than whether a government worker was dancing to “All the Single Ladies.”
Even worse, it took more than two years for three other hospital leaders to be fired for their roles in the scandal.
Associate Director Lance Robinson, Health Administration Service Chief Brad Curry, and hospital chief of staff Dr. Darren Deering were placed on administrative leave and continued to collect their salaries for nearly two years, despite the VA having enough evidence to suspend them at minimum.
The Phoenix example is not an isolated one, however. From Tomah, Wisconsin to central and south Texas, VA employees of varying levels of seniority have violated the VA’s own rules—in some cases leading to the death of veterans.
While VA Secretary David Shulkin was right to quickly remove Hawkins from his position as director of the D.C. VA, this action is not enough.
Across the federal government, there is a near-lack of accountability because it is next to impossible to fire federal workers. This needs to change.
A series of laws, initially created under the Pendleton Civil Service Reform Act in 1883, gave rise to the unaccountable civil service we have today.
While this law was passed to prevent raw political hiring and firing under the so-called “spoils system,” it has evolved to create a permanent, entrenched class of bureaucrats who have job protection for life.
Under Pendleton, only a few, technical government jobs were made permanent in a federal government that was tiny in size and scope compared to today. But changes under the Lloyd-Lafollette Act of 1912 and Civil Service Reform Act of 1978 added layers of protection that have extended dramatically.
Of the nearly three million federal employees, more than 90 percent have civil service protections that make firing them for even criminal offenses a nearly impossible process.
The problems at the VA are just the latest, sickening demonstration of the administrative state run amuck. Other agencies and departments have their own problems that stem from this broken system.
>>> Democracy Dies in the Administrative State
The laws originally created to promote merit today merely protect dysfunction and vice. While attempts have been made to bring more competition and accountability to federal employment, these tools are rarely utilized.
What’s needed is a wholesale change to the civil service that moves government workers toward an “at will” system of employment.
President Donald Trump, who famously uses the catchphrase “you’re fired,” is in a perfect position to push Congress to make needed changes to “drain the swamp” of the administrative state.
Several states, such as Georgia, have already successfully used similar reforms to improve their civil service, and it’s time the federal government receives the same treatment.
As this article’s co-author, Jarrett Stepman, wrote in a policy paper for the American Legislative Exchange Council, “By stripping the bureaucratic class of their special protections that few other Americans enjoy through comprehensive civil service reform, Trump can fulfill his inaugural promise, and ensure that when the people speak, Washington has to listen.
Outrageous and near-criminal treatment of our nation’s veterans should be a wake-up call to the American people that immediate change needs to take place. This process begins by bringing genuine democratic accountability to the “fourth” branch of government.
