FOLLOW HER - Review

DISTRIBUTOR: Quiver

SYNOPSIS: “Jess has finally found her hook: secretly filming creepy interactions she encounters via online job listings, and using the kinks of others to fuel her streaming success. For her next episode, she’s been hired by Tom to write the ending of a screenplay in a remote, lavish cabin. Once there, the alluring self-proclaimed screenwriter hands her a script in which the two of them are the main characters. This client isn’t what he seems, and even though the money’s great… the real payment here could cost her life.” - Quiver

REVIEW: FOLLOW HER is a cleaver idea that deals with the take down of an aggressive influencer whose karma catches up with her. Actress Dani Barker is also the film’s writer and a producer. She weaves together some interesting ideas, creates a character you’ll love to hate, and is an overall above average independent genre film.

The screenplay for FOLLOW HER tackles the arc of the main character Jess. It is made clear early on that she gives little thought to taking advantage of everyone, including her family, to get what she wants. She exploits people’s fetishes, she is usually careful, but something goes wrong with her latest encounter. Instead of taking it down, she leaves it online as it continues to trend and reaches a new level. When she comes across a writing opportunity that deals with themes she is familiar with, and pays good money, she throws caution to the wind and heads to the country to meet the screenwriter. What ensues is a game of cat-&-mouse as Jess comes to realize the setup is too perfect and there is something more going on than she expected or planned for. There are moments when Jess’s ego and greed overcomes her sense of self-preservation and ultimately the climax presents a strange twist that is an overthought “Absence of Malice.” The story does not end there. There is a scene with Jess, her father and the police that feels out of place and almost like an afterthought to the entire narrative. There is a final sequence that adds another level of the strange and bizarre, which also provides the title of the film. I was in for the majority of the tale, however the subsequent scenes felt unnecessary and bewildering.

Dani Barker and Luke Cook, the two main actors, carry the story. Barker portrays a mean girl, a self-absorbed influencer of today, and I enjoyed seeing her in danger. Yes, I was rooting for the bad guy, Tom. Luke’s Tom is a charming and twisted character, and the humor flows naturally. His performance reminds me of a cross between Christian Bale’s Patrick Bateman and Jack Nicholson’s The Joker. The actors have a strong rapport and their on-screen interactions are believable and engaging. The actors have excellent chemistry, but their rapport creates a light-hearted atmosphere that undermines the suspense and makes it difficult for the audience to become fully invested in the story.

The production values are solid, the editing creates a nice pace for the majority of the film. The barn is an excellent location, the others are adequate. Jess has some interesting costume designs and Barker seems very comfortable in them.

FOLLOW HER, an adult-themed film that never achieves a level of seriousness and peril that I believe it should. There are excellent performances and some witty banter, but the story has two additional scenes, the first feels awkward and the second is an additional punchline that feels like it is there to simply set up the title of the film. Still, it is a deadly frolic where you can’t help but cheer for Jess’ demise.

Dahlia Anastasia Romanova was born in 1991. The true origin of her parents are unknown, but her mother was part Greek and after losing Natalia due to Ivan making a deal with Dreykov for money, begged the goddesses to help whilst in labour.

After giving birth to Dahlia, 4 goddesses appeared at her aid. These were Artemis, the goddess of the moon and the hunt; Athena, the goddess of wisdom; Persophone, the goddess of grain and agriculture as well as the queen of the Underworld; and Hestia, the goddess of the hearth and home.

They each blessed the girl, offering protection if needed and volunteering to being family for the baby. Dahlia's mother looked at her daughter and noticed her beauty. She decided to name the girl after the dahlia flower that was the only thing left noticing their similarities in character.

Dahlia's mother also gave her daughter, her necklace which had a dahlia pendent and Athena enchanted it, so that Dahlia could summon the 4 goddesses whenever she needed by thinking of them and rubbing the flower pendent.

In 1992 Dahlia got taken by the KGB and got put with a two Red Room operatives, Melina Vostokoff and Alexi Shostakov, as well as the Red Room agent, Natalia Romanova and another girl, Yelena Belova. Natalia, on the drive to Ohio, thought about making more American names for her and her new sisters.

She came up with "Natasha" for herself, "Daniella" or "Dani" for Dahlia and couldn't come up with one for Yelena. Natasha also changed her and Dani's last name to "Romanoff", as it's the American of "Romanov". Dani grew up thinking everything was normal until 1995 when the Red Room took her and her sisters. Dani got separated from her sisters.

The training was intense, including dancing ballet till your feet to watching Disney princess movies with way more violence to be brainwashed. Though Dani still managed to remain being an absolute sweetheart.

She would sneak bread for the younger Widows and train them in what they do know, so they wouldn't get hurt. The Red Room still called her "Dahlia", but she still went by "Dani", because she knew that she would no longer be a flower.

She eventually made some best friends there: Darya Volkov was the smart one who got the others out of trouble and had a sassy attitude, Chiara Chernova was the talkative one that liked to tease Dani a lot and loved gossip, Alice Barnes was the crazy and funny one who always found a way to make Dani laugh or start mischief with her, Sylvia Barton was the sweet one that was always there if Dani needed someone to listen to her or a hand to hold and then there was Karina Kozlov, she's the quiet and youngest one that originally didn't know Russian, but Dani taught her. Dani was very protective of her.

Dani would become one of the best girls there, other than Natasha and be used in a lot of things including being one of the people in the Taskmaster suit as well as training with the Winter Soldier. Dani and the Winter Soldier became close and she learned his real name.

The girls noticed how great Dani was and since she earned the title of "Red Widow", they shortened this and nicknamed her "Red".

Natasha eventually escaped the Red Room, leaving Dani heartbroken. The Red Room used this to break her, but before they did she found out that the Red Room was going to chemically subjugate the Widows, so she made a batch of antidotes in the form of red dust in secret and entrusted them to Oksana.

Dani slipped on a mission and at that the Red Room sent her to HYDRA without explanation. There she was experimented for a while, until Pierce debated just killing her, since the experiments weren't working. He finally decided not to and used her as a young female Winter Soldier instead. She became closer to Bucky Barnes since then, as well as eventually SHEILD got to her when she was 15.

As she was being interrogated, Natasha gave her peanut butter, which she excepted and it was the first food she ate outside of the Red Room and HYDRA.

She started living in an apartment with Clint Barton aka Hawkeye, her sister aka Black Widow and Laura Nelson aka Mockingbird and became close with Clint and Laura, who were both engaged at the time. She ended up being the youngest agent to join SHEILD.

Laura became her partner and Dani was either known as Red Widow or Agent Shadow by SHEILD. The public recognized how many people she's killed and gave her the nicknames "Angel of Death" as well as "Grin Reaper".

Dani had a nightmare and at one point, Nat came to check on her and when she did, Dani's eyes were glowing white and all the objects in the room levitated.

Natasha calmed her down eventually and trained her, as best she could, every so often. Later, Laura and Clint found out anyway when Laura was bringing her cookies. Dani still decided to keep her powers secret.

Laura after giving birth to Cooper Barton and Dani and Natasha became his surrogate aunts. They also became Lila Barton's surrogate aunts.

In 2011, Dani went on a mission with Natasha and shadowed Tony as "Daisy Rushman". She was to play an intern to him, who formally was at Harvard, but got offered to work as Tony Stark's intern. She also met Serena Stark ( @serenastark-official) then.

Natasha and her found out what was killing him and about Ivan Vanko. They confronted Tony and Natasha and Dani later ended up helping him.

In 2012, she finds out that Clint was mind controlled and joined the Avengers and helped fight Loki. She also meets Aurora(@whosafraidoflittleoldme17) there.

Dani continues with SHEILD, finds out that Phil Coulson is not dead and even meets some new people Skye, Leopold Fitz and Jemma Simmons that she ends up getting close to.

Dani gets information for Fury with Natasha on a mission with Steve and Aurora. She later finds out from Steve that Fury was shot and with his description figures out that it's the Winter Soldier aka Bucky Barnes. Dani with Natasha, Steve and Aurora find out that SHEILD is compromised by HYDRA and Dani joins them and Sam Wilson to take down SHIELD.

She later continues with SHEILD now commanded by Coulson. Later she helps raid a HYDRA base with the Avengers in order to get Loki's scepter, but ends up seeing the Maximoff twins not dead after an explosion happened at HYDRA in the past.

Dani then goes to Tony's party and finds out that he made Ultron. Later she helps fight Wanda and Pietro, but Wanda puts a nightmare in her head of the Red Room. She goes to Clint's house with the other Avengers and has a heartfelt conversation about what Ultron showed her and questioning whether killing people for a good cause still makes her a bad person.

She later helps Natasha, Aurora, Steve and Clint try to get the cradle but ends up getting kidnapped by Ultron along with her big sister. She helps fight Ultron with the Avengers.

Later she found out about the Sokovian Accords and thought about killing herself. She felt responsible for everything. Dani knew that she was a murderer and just puts everyone in danger. She later finds out that the government wanted to have her executed anyway, so she signs the accords at first for that reason and becomes distant.

She specifically doesn't tell Natasha about the government wanting to kill her, because Natasha would do anything to stop that. Eventually Bucky talks her out of it, but later the two get brainwashed by Zemo. Dani then joins Team Cap and later goes on the run with her big sister who now knows about the government wanting to kill her.

She reunites with Yelena who reveals the Red Room still exists and Dani joins her family in helping taking it down.

Dani then continues on the run, but ditches her sister and contacts Bucky as she heard from him about Wakanada being able to get HYDRA out her head.

She goes to Wakanada and Shuri helps her and in return she helps them fight against Killmonger. Later Dani finds out about Thanos and helps a lot in fighting him and the Black Order. She eventually gets blipped, disappearing in her sister's arms.

She comes back and kicks Thanos' ass with her powers after realizing that Natasha was gone. After that she goes into a deep depression and her old habits of self destruction including: drinking, not eating or sleeping and cutting herself.

She later finds out Natasha came back and stopped her habits. The two live now in a small house with a stray black cat they found and named Liho.
