So I am really bad at understanding things that aren't said or I just easily lose them cause I have a hard time maintaining focus,I am watching Cyrano right now and this scene just happened and I would love to know and understand more about what exatcly wasn't said out loud about christian in this scene honestly this was one of the only few moments that i could see a bit more of him but before he was kinda just a character there a bit in the way

it’s just like. Cyrano sees Roxanne as this solid pillar of perfection that the world can’t influence. She’s aristocracy, she’s beautiful and rich and poised and charming and sought after and everything he thinks he’ll never be or deserve. He thinks their relationship is friendship, or at best a courtly love where he’s allowed to love but not touch.

Meanwhile Roxanne is constantly on the edge of starvation, her money is running out; she’s entirely dependent on a crowd of suitors perceiving her as desirable and rich so they will keep giving her gifts they think she could buy for herself. She is a skilled poet but could never support herself through patronage because an aristocratic lady is supposed to have money, not earn it. She looks at Cyrano and sees someone who is loved for his accomplishments, who has a stable income as a respected officer in the military, who can move through the world freely and yet chooses to stay by her side. She loves him but thinks that someone like that, someone who works for what he wants and never relents, surely if he loved her back he would have said something. Surely his silence means he doesn’t. So she looks for love elsewhere, and where does she find it? In a young soldier, looking to prove himself in the world. In a man who is beautiful and trapped in the path his parents laid out for him. In a man much like herself, and much like Cyrano.

@pegasusdrawnchariots so I remembered something about their pourpoints and I was right. Here is the original French text and a word-for-word translation from yours truly:

Roxane n’aura pas de désillusion!

From my leather pourpoint into your embroidered one!

Pourpoints (aka old jackets) were a staple of men’s fashion for a good two centuries. From my understanding, they were already old-fashioned by Cyrano’s time, emphasising his poverty and Christian’s inadequacy with the social expectations of his time (remember that when he is first introduced, his clothing is described as elegant, but not up to date with the latest trends).

Obviously, the focus of the French line is on the materials themselves, and what they reveal about the characters: Cyrano’s pourpoint is made of rough, reliable leather, while Christian’s is prettier and therefore fragile.

But! Because pourpoints cover the chest, they are frequently associated with the heart in poetry! Add to this:

The lexical field of the soul

Both of the boys’ pourpoints being used to carry love letters to Roxane at different points in time

Cyrano’s Totally Normal Behaviour throughout this entire scene

And you get a very a strong basis for the English translation. The original text does not include the Equally Normal Stage Direction, but that is absolutely how I would instruct actors to play it if I were directing the play.

"The first and final insult" one-shot fan fic with Cyrano (X reader?)

Fic is under a read more for length and hopefully just easier to bypass my above text.

Soooo... A while back I cut my hair really short, which reinspired and on idea/daydream I would have with Cyrano. And I wrote it down then COMPLETELY forgot about it.

Until recently when I remembered a song I rewrote for ANOTHER daydream/story idea. Only, it's lost. D: Instead I found this. Reread it, and thought... Well, why not?

I've seen so many more self insert stuff and feel way more comfortable sharing now. PLUS, it's rather ambiguous so it could almost be an X reader fic? Maybe? XD

This would be near the middle/end of the story(maybe).

This is stupid. Roxanne is stupid, and Christian is stupid. Cyrano is stupid! Most of all, I am stupid, for letting this go on so long and letting my anger get the best of me. For what I'm about to say to Cyrano might get me killed, or at least injured if he's feeling gracious.

"Cyrano! Have you ever heard of Pinocchio?" I do my best to calm myself, there's still time to back out.

Cyrano spins around to face me. He and the other Garsons watch curiously. Think I might be a century or two, too early. The man carefully shakes his head, curious as to where I am taking this.

"It's a story about a lonely toy-maker that makes a wooden boy who comes to life and tries to become a real boy."

Suddenly more curious he starts walking toward me slowly. He knows I'm mad, and I have yet to insult him in the time we've known each other. There is a hint of a smile in his eyes, as he readies himself for whatever pathetic insult I might throw at him. Honestly, I'm not starting off very well.

"No one questions it. A wooden boy running around. Until…" I pause, staring him down as I take a deep breath. This is it. There will be no going back. "He tells a lie, and his nose grows."

The collective noise from our audience makes it impossible to know what anyone is saying. None of it matters, as I now have Cyrano's full attention. His eyes are starting to burn with intensity. A hand trembles towards his sword. Were this anyone else, he may have drawn it immediately. But being a woman, even one who has been dressing as a man, pretending to be one, and is well-known in skill with a sword now, is still a woman.

Our audience is unaware of my true nature, I've hid it well. Cyrano has only found out recently himself. Thus why he holds himself back now despite my manly disguise.

My legs tremble as I continue. "I think, you may be suffering this same fate." His hand grips the sword hilt. "You have been lying Cyrano, and I will not expose that lie, as your nose has done that for you already."

Some of the few braver men go to Cyrano, in hopes of turning him away. Most others come to me, to stop my foolishness. Their words fall on deaf ears, as it is too late.

"Your nose can not grow anymore despite you continuing to lie for two reasons!" My voice is getting shaky and my legs weak. The anger that fueled my foolishness is disappearing now that I've let it out. Still, I must finish it. "One! If it were to grow anymore, you would not be able to lift your own head!"

Cyrano strides towards me. The few men near him have lost all courage and quickly retreat. His fury is almost palpable. With such terrifying speed and grace, his sword is unsheathed. There are only a few steps now and little time for me to finish my final words.

"The second!" He is nearly upon me. With no need to raise my voice, I speak again only loud enough for him to hear. "You believe your own lies, that you can not be loved."

It is almost poetic to say that we are nose to nose.

His fury falters at my final statement, but it has not dissipated. "Draw your sword." His words send a shiver down my spine.

"No." There is no way I could win against him. That and I am afraid the moment I move, I'll lose all strength left in me and collapse.

I'm not sure if he can see the fear and regret in my eyes. The subtle trembling of my whole body. Tears threatening at the corners of my eyes yet somehow not showing. The fury in his own soften, but not truly gone. His grip on the sword tightens and loosens, until much to my surprise, he sheathes it once more.

He spins around so suddenly that by the time I realize I'm staring at the back of his head, he is already walking away.

There are no words to describe just how truly stunned I am. That I survived unscathed, or even had the courage-no. What I did was not courageous. Even as the other young men applaud my so-called bravery for facing him. If I was truly courageous, I would have faced him alone, with no large crowd nearby.

Not that a crowd should have stopped him.

The crowd of people has finally dispersed, and I am left with only a few male companions, still oblivious to my being a woman. I fall to my knees and am unable to hold back the tears. "What have I done?"

WIP ASK GAME: Berry, Could I beg more information on “Lemon Eyes” and “High Frequency”? I am very intrigued.

Alright!!! Thank you so much for playing, Owl dear. I answered Lemon Eyes and tagged you, but just in case, the link is here.

High-Frequency is a wip whose title origin I can't even remember, but it is, essentially, a Cyrano AU for Geralt x Eskel x Jaskier based on the Peter Dinklage and Steve Martin movies. It doesn't have any real writing going on for it, so I'll just ramble about it for as long as you let me. I don't think I'll ever really write this wip, but it was a lot of fun to imagine.

Originally, I had the more obvious choices for each character to slip into: Eskel as Cyrano, the eloquent renaissance man with a facial deformity that, despite the stoic face he exudes, impedes his self-worth. Geralt as Christian, the handsome soldier, who, despite being a good man at heart, is terrible at expressing himself and often makes bad choices when he's trying his best. And finally, Jaskier as Roxanne, the beautiful, romantic noble who wants s lover to match him/her (I wasn't sure if I wanted to genderbend at this point) wit for wit and love for love.

Then I got a little deeper into the fandom, learned more about the book and game characterizations, and pondered.

Jaskier/Dandelion is, at heart, a whore. He loves deeply, to be sure, but he's not the kind of romantic that Roxanne is. Geralt's a whore too, but he's picky about his love, and he wants a deep, committed love so much that it hurts him. Eskel is still absolutely the long-suffering, long-pining childhood friend. So I switched it around a little. Geralt is Roxanne, beautiful and disillusioned after years of trying and failing at love. Jaskier is Christian, a prettyboy who of course loves Roxanne, but doesn't truly know him at the start. And Eskel is still Cyrano, longing from the wings with the scars on his face.

Obviously, I'm still taking huge liberties with the plot, but when Geralt takes pretty, handsome Jaskier to bed, but Jaskier doesn't know how to love him, Eskel steps forward. He teaches Jaskier the art of loving Geralt, the art he knows best. This ends in a happy throuple and not death, because I'm a sap like that, but it's still a whole bunch of angst.

During freshmen year, my friends and I shipped Cyrano and Christian from Cyrano de Bergerac.

Lovely, but now that I have matured into my junior year, I am seeing the truth in Cyrano x Christian x Roxanne.

Sometimes I wonder how much fanfic of classical/iconic literature exists because of school projects. Just floating out there. In a drive somewhere. Not to mention that nothing is more unhinged than bored middle/highschoolers being forced to liven up books they might not care about. For every deranged ao3 crossover fic there is an infinitely more deranged crackfic written for the great gatsby or antigone or to kill a mockingbird or whatever by a bored highschooler and his friends for 10th grade English. I wanna read it
