I am a simple girl. All I want is one (1) production of Cyrano de Bergerac where Christian is so moved by the balcony speech he reaches for Cyrano and breathes “Un baiser!” only to backtrack when he gets The Death Glare™

Every time I read Cyrano, I’ve always wondered one thing : what the hell the Gascons thought Cyrano did with Christian ?
Like Le Bret knows he loves Roxane and would do anything to make her happy but the others ?
They are watching this man killing everyone mocking his nose for the last fifteen years but when an abnormally handsome dude do the same he hugs him and they start hanging out 24/7, he even delivers his mail during a WAR, what did the Gascons thought about that ?
Brissaille : Do you think Bergerac is …*bends his sword*
Cuigy : Oh definitely.

Christian: We’re getting married, bitches!
Roxane: And we're about to make it everybody else's problem.

Honestly? Christian should have gotten to haunt the narrative a little longer. He deserves it for being so pretty and so sad.

#hey fellas. what the fuck #this was...not in the French as far as I remember
@pegasusdrawnchariots so I remembered something about their pourpoints and I was right. Here is the original French text and a word-for-word translation from yours truly:
Roxane n’aura pas de désillusion!
Roxane shall not be disillusioned!
Dis, veux-tu qu’à nous deux nous la séduisions?
Say, would you like us to team up and seduce her?
Veux-tu sentir passer, de mon pourpoint de buffle
Would you like to feel the soul I breath
Dans ton pourpoint brodé, l’âme que je t’insuffle!
From my leather pourpoint into your embroidered one!
Pourpoints (aka old jackets) were a staple of men’s fashion for a good two centuries. From my understanding, they were already old-fashioned by Cyrano’s time, emphasising his poverty and Christian’s inadequacy with the social expectations of his time (remember that when he is first introduced, his clothing is described as elegant, but not up to date with the latest trends).
Obviously, the focus of the French line is on the materials themselves, and what they reveal about the characters: Cyrano’s pourpoint is made of rough, reliable leather, while Christian’s is prettier and therefore fragile.
But! Because pourpoints cover the chest, they are frequently associated with the heart in poetry! Add to this:
The lexical field of the soul
Both of the boys’ pourpoints being used to carry love letters to Roxane at different points in time
Cyrano’s Totally Normal Behaviour throughout this entire scene
And you get a very a strong basis for the English translation. The original text does not include the Equally Normal Stage Direction, but that is absolutely how I would instruct actors to play it if I were directing the play.
In conclusion: bi

Christian: Wow, Roxane, you want to hold my hand before marriage? How awfully lewd of you.
Roxane: We literally slept together yesterday.
Christian: That's NOTHING compared to the lewdness of holding hands.

Link
@pegasusdrawnchariots come here this instant
Chirstian and Roxane are married. The cadets leave Paris at daybreak. In-between is one long night, which someone will spend writing a letter that he never plans to send…
Aka guess who was so unbelievably bored at work today that she wrote an angsty Cyrano fic? Hoping the link works, here it is, enjoy!

First of all, this is evil, so well done.
Second of all, I think it’s entirely dependent on which portrayals we’re talking about! In Benoît Solès’ version, I’m marrying Roxane. No hesitation. She could kill me and I’d thank her for it. Then I’d probably fuck Cyrano and kill Christian, but it honestly doesn’t matter compared to the prospect of marrying Clara Huet’s Roxane [frantic lesbian noises]
Now if we’re talking about the 1990 adaptation, that becomes harder. I love love love Depardieu’s Cyrano, he’s my favourite so far, but I can’t possibly imagine him happily married to anyone. So probably fuck. I would marry Christian because he is so pretty and sad 🥺 Which means Roxane dies, which I am OK with in this scenario (I do like this portrayal, but my best friend pointed out she might be intended to be read as more manipulative than your average Roxane, and now I can’t unsee it).
Now for the 1950 movie, I think Cyrano and Christian should marry each other. There. I said it. This Cyrano is the most thematically likely to die, though: there’s just something about his delivery of the white plume verses. Then I’d probably fuck Christian and marry Roxane.
As for the 2021 musical, I loved Christian the most so I’d marry him in a heartbeat. And then I’m annoyed because overall, I liked this Cyrano more than I liked this Roxane…? But then they had to go and do THIS:
“I have always loved Cyrano!”
“And I loved my pride.”
And just for that I am murdering him. I am murdering him a thousand times. THE PANACHE VERSE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT LINE IN ANY AND ALL FRENCH PLAYS HOW DARE YOU RUIN IT.
If we’re talking about the play itself though, and about the version of it that exists only in my mind and heart: Cyrano wins every time. I could make this man happy. He wouldn’t make it easy for me, but I can be even more stubborn and annoying than he is. I really really love both Christian and Roxane, but I have a particular tenderness for Christian so you know what this means. 🥺
STILL EVIL THOUGH.
As always with FMK, rest assured that any/all fucking/marrying is willing. Can't say the same for the killing, though!
