Here's the short version from ao3: Summer 2019, 77-year-old Paul wakes up feeling surprisingly good. One tiny problem: he is back in December 1965.

Why I like this fic:

This fic is SUPER popular, I wanted to be the first one to recommend it on here because it is genuinely my favorite beatles fic Ever. Paul somehow time travels back to 1965 and gets to be a beatle all over again. Most importantly, he gets to see John again, and say the things he never got to say :) It ripped my heart out the first time I read it and sewed it all back together again. I laughed, I cried, I aww'd, I got angry, everything! It is a Very long read (over 360k.. in like sixty some chapters) but ALL of it is worth it. The world building, characterization, the smut, all of it is a 10/10 across the board. Every beatles fan that hasn't tackled this monster yet deserves to read it!

“so y/n, what exactly do you plan to do after you and connor graduate?” larry murphy asked from across the dinner table.

“well, sir, quite frankly i’m not sure yet.” you said, giving a small awkward laugh at the end, quite embarrassed.

“it’s okay, y/n, sweetie, connor doesn’t know what he wants to do yet either.” cynthia smiled, it’s like she knows my every move, you thought. lary gave a small shake of his head, showing slight disappointment, as it was obvious zoe knew what she wanted to do.

“well, connor will figure it out, he’s just cool like that. he can do almost anything just, on the fly like that.” you said, giving the two parents a small smile.

connor looks up from his food, for the first time since you and connor had left his bedroom, more specifically he looks up at you. “thank you, n/n.” he says, smiling at you, but going back to his food.

“what?” zoe gasped, with a confused look on her face.

“exactly what i’m thinking, connor are you high-?” lary began, but was interrupted by their guest.

“i’m sorry what, i’m a little confused, heh.” you said giving a small, bashful, smile.

“oh my god, i knew it! i knew it would come!” cynthia said, hugging you from across the table.

“what would come?” you asked, even more confused.

“the day connor would smile.” zoe said bluntly.

you have a confused look, unsure of what they meant.

“as you may know, connor struggles, a lot. we don’t even remember the last time connor ever smiled. he’s been so alone for so many years, we’re just…glad he has you.” cynthia smiled.

you were so confused, what do they mean connor doesn’t smile? he always smiles around you? i mean, you knew he struggled but you never knew this badly? and speaking of, when was the last time his family saw him smile? you began to wonder if-

“i don’t get why it’s a big deal.” connor said, rolling his eyes at his mother, who was just previously rambling and on the brink of tears.

“y/n makes me happy, they always have, and always will.” connor shrugged, getting up to put his plate away. his family - and you, more flabbergasted then before.

hate the fact so many people think dear evan hansen is supposed to be “oh! good story good protagonist” when it’s not. every character we follow is incredibly flawed and it’s portrayed that way. it’s your fault if you can’t see OBVIOUS criticism of our main character’s actions through the show.

“but! but the end! he got scot-free!”

he lost the only actual friends he had. he lost the murphy family who he felt was his only family at that moment. before speaking about the letter being his, he already lost alana and jared, and the ONLY person he had after the fact of revealing that the letter was his was his MOTHER. a woman who, throughout the show, he had a strained relationship with.

not to mention did we just ignore good for you, which came BEFORE the letter.

also i think….? complaining that the murphy’s didn’t out evan is SO weird.

in the end of the show the murphy family literally gets doxxed (in the novel, they quite literally SAY where the family lives online, as well as zoe’s number. jfc poor girl), because of something these people believe to be connor’s suicide note, which quite literally doesn’t say ANYTHING bad about the murphy family. people just decide to dox the family because they have the interpretation that the murphy family is all at fault.

can you IMAGINE what would have happened to evan if the murphy family came out about that? it would be SO much worse.

the murphy family is dysfunctional, yes, but they aren’t evil people. there’s a REASON they didn’t come out with it because. they didn’t want evan getting the same treatment as them, no matter how badly he fucked up. because they have REASONING in their brains.

this is so easy to understand and people so lack the skills to think about media in the current day. like no. the show doesn’t explain it to you outright, and it doesn’t come to a perfect ending for you. and it shouldn’t have to if you’re able to understand media to an extent.

larry was a high income christian lawyer in rochester new york in the mid 2010s who played golf and believed weed was a hard drug worthy of sending his child to rehab. REHAB. y'all i am sorry this man is an Abuser full stop I know you love evan's idealized version of larry but it is just not true
