Painting With Blocks

Written for Hermit-a-day-May, day 21: Bdubs!

Bdubs paints with blocks.

A landscaping job is nothing more than brushstrokes of oils overlapping each other, finding just the right hue and the right shade to make a painting breathe and pulsate.

Bdubs walks through his forest, each block chosen with care and devotion, specifically picked out with its effect in mind. As he looks up through the branches and leaves, he know. Nothing was out of place.

His feet crunch the grass below, and he can almost feel stains of paint forming on the hem of his pants with every blade of grass stroking against him.

The sound of rushing water makes him smile, and he turns around at his false river and miniature waterfall.

How does it look like the river is snaking along? That new and new water crash below with a plume of water droplets around it? How does that happen, when nothing truly moves?

A job well done. That’s all Bdubs can think, looking over and around him. All that’s missing is ambient noise. It was a good idea, adding a single block of water hidden away near the false river to provide more immersion, and tying those bunnies in strategic spots makes the place more lively, like it’s truly a natural biome, unless you pay close attention to the details.

The cabin was also a fantastic addition. His mailbox may be a bit too far away for ease of access, but he can’t bring himself to regret the position he eventually, after many weeks of pondering, settled on. 

And the once leafless tree that breached the gap between his base and the forest now fit in with the rest of the landscape. It was a hard choice to make, but the end result made it completely worth it.

Bdubs has made a bunch of builds he’s been proud of, and the cyberpunk city he’s doing with Impulse is also up there, as well as the Tree of Whimsey of last world, and the cathedral… Well, he’s been, and is still, very proud of a lot of things he’s built over the years. Saying he’s more proud now than ever before may be a bit of an exaggeration. But he does believe this is the culmination of everything he’s been working towards for many years.

The build isn’t finished yet. Far from it.

Seeing the leaves rustle with the wind, the river and waterfall nearly flow despite their solidity, the small bursts of smoke that leave the chimney of the cabin where he hid his mailbox, and the tiny hops of the bunny rabbits, he can tell it’s all slowly locking into place.

The landscape is nearly breathing. 

He can’t wait to bring it to life.

The 219th Year Derse Rose sat alone on the Derse throne that had once been hers. Dave was off somewhere — the where of it didn’t matter anymore. He would be back… or he wouldn’t. Jade didn’t know where she was — nor June. This was, ironically enough, the last place that any of them would look for her. And if the cursed Tome was right about everything, then it wouldn’t matter anymore — not really. There were two more thrones today. She wouldn’t be alone for long. “Heyyyy… anyone there?” A voice drifting into the vast space of the Derse Cathedral. Outside, she could see the Dersites gathering in a crowd. They were hesitant to come inside — hesitant to approach her. “Rox, this is some fucking grade-A insane-o shit,” another, deeper voice — carried across the expanse of the Cathedral by some trick of acoustics. “Jake asked me to back him up on something and I thought he was drinking again… but no bullshit there was something in there.” Two people stepped through the crowd of Dersites at the front of the Cathedral, parting the crowd and walking in. A man with spiked-up hair, his features faintly resembling those of her brother — and a person with their hair in loose curls who could, if it weren’t for their age and general demeanor, pass for an echo of Rose’s own mother. She knew to expect them, already — the Tome had finally offered up the information she had been waiting for so long to obtain. “Roxy… Dirk…” Rose’s voice was soft, but it carried back across the Cathedral — that same trickery of the space that allowed her to hear their conversation before. “Welcome to Derse.”

My BG3 character, Nathe, as a Cyberpunk edgerunner!!! This took me a couple months of off-and-on work so I really hope some people like it!! ^-^

I'm a little nervous about posting this one because I'm not sure if it's too odd of a cross over. But I kinda feel like we didn't see the crazy body mods I wanted to see in Cyberpunk 2077. Like, we have all these robo limbs but no one is getting dumb shit to make themselves look like fantasy creatures??

Nathe is a Netrunner from England who recently entered the Night City merc scene. Following a job gone horribly wrong, almost having fried his brain when he got tangled in military ICE, Nathe was declared dead at a Ripperdoc's in New Manchester. However, after a seven month recovery and serious upgrades to his cyberware (some more necessary than others), Nathe donned the mantle of "Diablo," and fled the country on the first plane to Night City. After a few months of odd jobs and managing to mask his presence on the Net, Nathe received an anonymous job offer with coordinates to a small high rise in Arroyo. There, he was interviewed–or more accurately, interrogated–by a gang known as Hand And Fang, and their leader whom they simply called "The Vampire."

(why yes I do want to write a BG3 Cyberpunk AU with a dynamic akin to Absolute!Tav and Ascended!Astarion, why was it obvious?)

If anyone is interested in the actual design process of this I'm gonna break it down a little:

Horns - I wanted some of his cyberware to just be for the purpose of aesthetics, so the horns do have the ability to lay back (for more comfortable sleeping, to get through doorways, etc.) but otherwise they're just cool metal implants with blue LEDs.

Eyes - I love that tiefling eyes glow in BG3, and I love the eyes with animated flames. So to try and replicate that, Nathe's eyes have scattered LEDs that slowly pulsate to give the illusion of radiating light. I also drew them with a ring of white highlight around the entire iris to kind of mimic neon lights.

Teeth - Nathe had a couple of teeth capped with fang-shaped chrome veneers. This was my take on translating tieflings' sharp teeth into his new design, and I think it's one of my favorite parts.

Tattoos - I did some research into facial tattoos and picked some with appropriate symbolism, as well as adapting his tattoos from BG3 into just the neck portion. Nathe has his blood type over his left eye. Over the right eye is a simplified drawing of a cathedral window, as a nod to a character in Arcane (which I was watching while working on this). There is an upside down cross under his left eye, a broken chain on his left sideburn area, and carnivore teeth in the hollows of his cheeks mirrored on both sides. He also has 3 small triangles under his lips. There is a sword dripping blood in the center of his throat. Where many people get eyebrow piercings, Nathe has a semicolon to represent his diversities and the struggles he has faced due to them.

Cyberware - The sculpted ridges of the tiefling body in BG3 are just so cool, and I especially love the shoulder blades that look like partially formed wings, so I wanted his cyberware to mimic all of that. He has panels on his stomach much like the "plates" that meet at a tiefling's navel. There are panels on the obliques, placed above where the ribcage stops. The panels on his shoulder blades represent the beginnings of devil wings forming. The spine implant is both representative of the raised spine on a tiefling's body, and also based on the design of the Sandevistan from Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. The implant above the tailbone is in place of the tails tieflings have, only because I think a tail would be incredibly impractical irl, and my only idea for making it look "cyberpunk-y" was to make it into a mantis blade, but coming out of his ass, and that's dumb as hell.

Seeing these shots for the second time, I have to say they are so, so funny when you know what's literally on the other side of that street. (It's one of the largest and most beautiful Orthodox cathedrals in the city, and a strangely pretty Russian Revival-style building. Nothing cyberpunk-ish at all.)
