Faye Wong’s Cult Fashion Looks, From Margiela to Vivienne Westwood (2022)
We look back at the Canto-pop queen’s boldest looks—and the fashion brands she wore before they were cool
Is there anyone cooler than Faye Wong? From being a muse to filmmaker Wong Kar-wai to collaborating with dream-pop pioneers Cocteau Twins, the Hong Kong musician has always forged a unique path to stardom.
While Wong’s status as the queen of Canto-pop is as undeniable—she holds a Guinness World Record for best-selling video game theme song for 1999’s Eyes On Me—she’s also known for a daring sense of style.
In true Leo fashion, Wong has boldly experimented with her outfits across her three-decade career. Reflecting her unconventional tastes, her wardrobe is an Instagram fashion archivist’s dream, boasting avant-garde brands like Yohji Yamamoto, Rick Owens, Helmut Lang and Raf Simons. With the help of stylists Thomas Chan and Titi Kwan, Wong wore Margiela before “Tabi boots” entered the mainstream vocabulary, and understood the cult appeal of a Vivienne Westwood corset before Pinterest existed. Oh, and did we mention she’s a Philophile?
In celebration of her 53rd birthday this month, we take a look at Wong’s singular style and all the covetable fashion pieces that would have made her an Internet It-girl today.
1. Vivienne Westwood dog print corset, 1992
Before they became popular with the likes of Bella Hadid and Kourtney Kardashian, Wong performed in a Vivienne Westwood corset from the brand’s “Always on Camera” fall/winter 1992 collection. This one is distinguished by its puppy print, taken from the art of 18th-century English painter Thomas Gainsborough. Wong’s accessories, featuring layers of beads and a cross necklace, was also an edgy styling trick borrowed from the godmother of punk.
2. Plastic slip dress and mohair knit crop top, 1993
In a look that is quintessentially ’90s, Wong wore a see-through slip dress and a crop top to perform at a music awards in 1993. It has certainly lived on in fashion moodboards: 29 years later, a similar outfit was worn by pop star Olivia Rodrigo for her Sour tour.
3. Ann Demeulemeester backless top and leather pants, 1996
Wong threw on another daring look when she returned to the stage in 1996, this time pulling off a full look from Ann Demeulemeester’s spring/summer 1996 collection that made her resemble a rockstar.
4. Ann Demeulemeester asymmetrical jacket, 1996
Wong demonstrated her penchant for the Antwerp Six designer yet again by wearing this striking suit jacket that came with only one shoulder.
5. Yohji Yamamoto Harlequin coat dress, 1997
For the cover of her self-titled album, Wong transformed into a goth goddess by wearing a long checkerboard coat from Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto’s fall/winter 1997 collection.
6. Helmut Lang top and slit skirt, 1997
Wong certainly embraced ’90s minimalism, as this Helmut Lang ensemble she wore for a magazine shoot shows us.
7. Raf Simons cobweb knit top, Jurgi Persoons skirt, Jeremy Scott’s sole-less heels, 1998
Avant-garde Belgian designer Jurgi Persoons had only opened his eponymous label two years before Wong sported one of his pieces, which is extremely telling of the singer’s pre-Internet intuition of what’s cool. Besides styling it with a Raf Simons grail piece, what makes this outfit all the more impressive are the sole-less shoes from Jeremy Scott: Wong is the only person to wear them off the runway.
8. Maison Martin Margiela sweater, 1999
More minimalism, this time courtesy of the cult fashion label formerly known as Maison Martin Margiela.
9. Custom Titi Kwan knit dress, 2010
Besides sourcing pieces from the edgiest fashion brands around the world, Wong also turned to her longtime stylist Titi Kwan for dramatic ensembles to take to the stage in, like this voluminous textured dress.
10. Alexander McQueen skull dress, 2011
A year after Alexander McQueen’s death, Wong performed in a dress from the British designer that featured his famous skull motif.
11. Custom Titi Kwan crystal chandelier dress, 2011
Forget swinging from the chandelier; Wong sang in one for a concert in Taipei, a feat achieved with the design brilliance of Titi Kwan and over 10,000 sparkling Swarovski crystals.
12. Céline turtleneck and pleated skirt, 2016
Even when dressing down, Wong opts for a fashion label unlike any other: old Céline, helmed by Phoebe Philo. The singer is a known fan of the brand, having made rare public appearances to attend its fashion shows.

Harry Styles
His fashion has been noted as "flamboyant", "fashion-forward" and "fun". Citing his use of the colour pink, Styles quoted English musician and The Clash's bassist Paul Simonon in a Rolling Stone interview: "Pink is the only true rock & roll colour." Ann Powers of NPR wrote that his personal style recalls the Spice Girls' "theatrical parade through pop's sartorial heritage" and that he "comforts with fashion's way of telling stories through artful accessories." Tom Lamont of The Guardian noted that some of Styles' fashion choices have contributed to "an important political discussion about gendered fashion."
Styles won the British Style Award at the 2013 Fashion Awards. In 2018, Styles was voted fourth on British GQ's list of 50 best-dressed men, in which fashion designer Michael Kors deemed him "the modern embodiment of British rocker style: edgy, flamboyant and worn with unapologetic swagger."
Journalist and editor Anna Wintour chose Styles to be a co-chair of the 2019 Met Gala alongside Lady Gaga and Serena Williams, which preceded the art exhibition Camp: Notes on Fashion. In 2020, Styles became the first man to appear solo on the cover of Vogue, for its December issue. Following criticism from conservative commentators and activists for wearing a Gucci gown on the cover, Styles defended his decision by saying, "To not wear something because it's females' clothing, you shut out a whole world of great clothes." He went on to say that "what's exciting about right now is you can wear what you like" and that the lines "are becoming more and more blurred. "He was voted GQ's Most Stylish Man of the Year in 2020.
Grayson Perry
Grayson Perry (born 24 March 1960) is an English contemporary artist, writer and broadcaster. He is known for his ceramic vases, tapestries and cross-dressing, as well as his observations of the contemporary arts scene, and for dissecting British "prejudices, fashions and foibles".
From an early age he liked to dress in women's clothes and in his teens realised that he was a cross-dresser. At the age of 15 he moved in with his father's family in Chelmsford, where he began to go out dressed as a woman. When he was discovered by his father he said he would stop but his stepmother told everyone about it and a few months later threw him out.
Perry frequently appears in public dressed as a woman, and he has described his female alter-ego, "Claire", variously as "a 19th century reforming matriarch, a middle-England protester for No More Art, an aero-model-maker, or an Eastern European Freedom Fighter", and "a fortysomething woman living in a Barratt home, the kind of woman who eats ready meals and can just about sew on a button". In his work Perry includes pictures of himself in women's clothes: for example Mother of All Battles (1996) is a photograph of Claire holding a gun and wearing a dress, in ethnic eastern European style, embroidered with images of war, exhibited at his 2002 Guerrilla Tactics show.
Perry has designed many of Claire's outfits himself. Also, fashion students at Central Saint Martins art college in London take part in an annual competition to design new dresses for Claire. An exhibition, Making Himself Claire: Grayson Perry's Dresses, was held at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, from November 2017 to February 2018.
As of 2010 he lives in north London with his wife, the author and psychotherapist Philippa Perry. They have one daughter, Florence, born in 1992.
Leigh Bowery
Leigh Bowery (26 March 1961 – 31 December 1994) was an Australian performance artist, club promoter, and fashion designer. Bowery was known for his flamboyant costumes and makeup as well as his performances. Bowery was born and raised in Sunshine, a suburb of Melbourne, Australia. From an early age, he studied music, played piano, and went on to study fashion and design at RMIT for a year. He moved to London in 1980: 'I was so itchy to see new things and to see the world, that I just left', he said in 1987. There he found himself part of the New Romantic club scene. He worked in a clothing shop and appeared in commercials for Pepe jeans. He soon became an influential and lively figure in the underground clubs of London and New York, as well as in art and fashion circles. He attracted attention by wearing wildly outlandish and creative outfits that he made himself. As a fashion designer he had several collections and shows in London, New York and Tokyo. He has influenced designers and artists. He was known for wildly creative costumes, makeup, wigs and headgear, all of which combined to be striking and inventive and often kitschy or beautiful.
Bowery influenced other artists and designers including Alexander McQueen, Lucian Freud, Vivienne Westwood, plus numerous Nu-Rave bands and nightclubs in London and New York City.
Jaden Smith
Jaden Smith (born July 8, 1998) sometimes known by just the mononym Jaden is an American actor, rapper, singer, and songwriter. GQ described Smith as "in a league of his own" in terms of fashion and a "superstar who has taken fashion to an entirely different level". Smith has called Tyler the Creator, Batman and Poseidon his icons when it comes to fashion. Smith said that Tyler the Creator introduced him to the brand Supreme. Batman's dark, gothic scenery has influenced the clothing he has created through his brand MSFTSrep and his personal clothing style, wearing Batman protective armor to Kanye West's and Kim Kardashian's wedding and his prom. MSFTSrep's range includes hoodies, T-shirt, trousers and vests. In May 2013 Smith collaborated with a Korean designer, Choi Bum Suk, to create a pop-up store in which customers can buy clothes with their collaborated logos.
Smith raised controversy in 2016 after modelling in a womenswear campaign for Louis Vuitton wearing a skirt. Explaining his choice to wear a skirt, Smith said he was attempting to combat bullying, saying "In five years, when a kid goes to school wearing a skirt, he won't get beat up and kids won't get mad at him." Smith continued to wear womenswear throughout the rest of 2016. Smith was the first male model to model women's wear for Louis Vuitton. Smith created a denim-line with fashion brand G-Star in 2018.

Oscars 2020: From Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn to Angelina Jolie - The best in fashion, ranked - fashion and trends
The red carpet is all about being green and dressing responsibly now with Hollywood taking their efforts to reduce carbon footprints a notch higher this awards season. For the recently concluded 2020 BAFTAs, guests were invited to consider wearing a sustainable design or repeat an outfit they’d already worn before at the award ceremony. The Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild and Critics’ Choice Awards galas all served plant-based menus, instead of steak dinners that are typical of celebrity-packed events. The Oscars too will be serving a 70 per cent plant-based menu this time. While sustainability is a widespread discussion in fashion, questions have been raised towards the ‘greenism’ phenomena in the fashion industry. Speaking of the expected fashion tonight at the Oscars, a stylist predicts that this year will be a return to extravagance in terms of colour, shapes, sequins on the red carpet. Before the 1990s, several celebrities chose their red carpet dresses. Oscars fashion history is often remembered for the extraordinary and eccentric outfit choices that included torn denim, sequinned jumpsuits and even Indian headdresses on some actors. Also read: Oscar’s 2020: The much-coveted 24-karat gold-plated knight is worth only Rs 72 The New York Times asked in 2004, “Does the glamour of the Golden Globes steal the scene from Oscar?”, observing that the potential winners and nominees offered designers more opportunity to have their work featured on the red carpet. One of the most-talked-about red carpet gowns was the green Versace gown J.Lo wore to the Grammy Awards in 2000 (and was seen in again a short while ago, not to mention the debate about how Priyanka Chopra Jonas’ Ralph and Russo gown at the 2020 Grammys was inspired from Jennifer Lopez’s look). Interestingly the red carpet has turned green on several notable occasions when stars shone in vintage or custom-made gowns that have a history of their own and a narrative attached to them. Here’s our choice of the best from the red carpet, ranked according to the year of appearance. Marilyn Monroe, 1951: was never awarded or nominated for an Academy Award, but she managed to be a head-turner on the red carpet in 1951 when she was asked to present an award. The actress chose a black tulle dress with a deep neckline for the do. Audrey Hepburn, 1954: This exquisite gown made by Givenchy for Audrey Hepburn is all about style and elegance. The dress even has its own Wikipedia page! An icon on and off the screen, Audrey Hepburn often worked with the house of Givenchy for her red carpet appearances and her films. Audrey Hepburn’s little black dress designed by Hubert de Givenchy that she’s seen wearing in the opening scene of the 1961 romantic comedy film Breakfast at Tiffany’s is cited as one of the most iconic items of clothing in the history of twentieth-century fashion and probably the most famous little black dress (LBD) of all time. Elizabeth Taylor, 1961: The actress opted for a Dior dress that enhanced her slim waist for the 1961 Oscars when she won the Best Actress award for her role in A Venus in Mink. Also read| Oscar’s 2020: Lesser known interesting facts about the Academy Awards 2020 Barbra Streisand, 1969: Barbra Streisand took a slight detour for owning fashion on the Oscar red carpet in 1969. It was a trouser suit by Arnold Scaasi instead of a traditional gown that has been highly debated as both the best and worst outfit since. What’s more, the outfit turned out to be completely transparent which the actress later confessed that she had no idea the lights on stage would shine through. Farrah Fawcett, 1978: The actress’ gilded Stephen Burrows gown has spawned a million replicas for the disco set after it was first seen on her at the coveted awards ceremony. The same year, Goldie Hawn too exuded effortless glamour girl in a metallic wrap dress. Elizabeth Hurley, 1995: The model, actress and the quintessential Versace girl must have rained on everyone’s fashion parade that evening back in 1995 in a sparkling curve-hugging dress. Sharon Stone, 1998: The actor’s identified by her offbeat roles but she even chose to wear something entirely different at the 1998 Oscars. She walked down the Oscars red carpet in a lavender satin Vera Wang skirt with a men’s button-down shirt. Halle Berry, 2002: She became the first African-American woman to win an Academy Award for Best Actress but her partially sheer floral gown by Elie Saab is one we love to look back on. Kate Hudson, 2003: Her champagne Atelier Versace gown is no less than the stuff Hollywood royalty is made of. Michelle Williams, 2006: In a saffron Vera Wang dress, Michelle Williams created one of the most memorable fashion moments. The actress had attended the ceremony with her then-boyfriend, the late Heath Ledger, who was nominated for his role in Brokeback Mountain. Reese Witherspoon, 2006: The actress chose the vintage route which proved to be a sartorial success on the red carpet. It was a vintage (1955) Christian Dior gown for the evening. Nicole Kidman, 2007: The actress’s red Balenciaga gown was the style equivalent of businesswoman meets party girl with its bow draping from her neck into a train behind her. Marion Cotillard, 2008: French actress Marion Cotillard stood out in her Jean Paul Gaultier dress that looked as though it was made of fish scales. Penélope Cruz, 2009: The actress went vintage in a 1950 Pierre Balmain couture for her Oscars 2009 look. Anne Hathaway, 2011: The actor’s hosting gig with James Franco must not have gone down well in Oscars history but her Valentino dress from the fall 2002 couture collection surely became a talking point. Meryl Streep, 2012: The powerhouse talent had always stayed safe in the fashion department until 2012 when she wore a bold Lanvin number for the ceremony. She was awarded Best Actress for playing Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady that year. Michelle Williams, 2012: The cutesy peplum made a comeback on Michelle Williams’ red tulle Louis Vuitton gown. Angelina Jolie, 2012: If there’s the one dress we will always remember from the Oscars red carpet, it will be this one Angelina Jolie wore that also spawned a million memes. Angeline Jolie’s Atelier Versace black gown with a thigh-high slit came to be called “Angie leg” since this appearance. Gwyneth Paltrow, 2012: Another trend that started the same night was Gwyneth Paltrow’s caped trend for Tom Ford. The dress gave way to popular looks since from cocktail dresses to outerwear. Jennifer Aniston, 2013: Jennifer Aniston presented an award in this crimson Valentino Haute Couture gown. Jennifer Lawrence, 2013: J Law signed up as the face of Dior in 2012 and the French brand has dressed this gifted actor for all important moments since, including this classy gown she wore for her Oscar 2013 win. Remember her graceful fall as she went up on stage to accept the award? Loved the confidence with which she owned this moment! Lupita Nyong’o, 2015: A style icon in her own right, Lupita Nyong’o wore a baby-blue Prada dress, followed by an intricate pearl-covered Calvin Klein Collection gown. Lady Gaga, 2016: It’s difficult to not appreciate a sea of beautiful gowns on the Oscars red carpet but Lady Gaga has always done it differently. This Brandon Maxwell jumpsuit looked like an haute couture gown that Lady Gaga carried with much aplomb. In 2019 however, Lady Gaga channelled Audrey Hepburn in a custom, sculptural black gown by Alexander McQueen that she paired with a 128-carat Tiffany diamond necklace elbow-length black leather gloves. Her live performance with Bradley Cooper too became one of the talking points that year. The Oscars are not only about awarding great roles, hearing inspiring speeches or enjoying the musical presentations. Fashion, style and glamour is an important part of Hollywood’s most important evening. The fascination with Oscar outfits is eventually what stays with us once the awards wrap up. Dressing for the Academy Awards is serious business because the choice of an Oscar-worthy dress is almost as imperative as an Oscar-worthy role. BACK IN TIME: LADY GAGA ATTENDS THE VMAS 2009
Lady Gaga attended the Video Music Awards 2009 held at Radio City Music Hall in NYC on September 13. The songstress had no idea that this would be the night that changes her life forever, and we were there to witness it unfold.
She was styled by Nicola Formichetti for this special occasion.
Gaga wanted to make an impression for her first ever VMA red carpet, and she sure did when she showed up in this Jean Paul Gaultier Fall/Winter 2008 black & nude lace dragon illusion maxi dress with keyhole detail, short lace sleeves and quilted black velvet waist panel.
The accessories were more than exquisite and the rule here clearly was: the more the merier!
To start from top to bottom, the singer wore the Veil crochet hat from the Fall/Winter 2009 collection of Le Tour de Force.
The superstar also wore a heavily embellished feathered neck brace...
...with matching long feather ring, both custom-made by London-based young designer Keko Hainswheeler for the night.
Both her gold-plated Death spike ring and Phantom of the Opera-esque gold half face mask were created by jeweller Carol Wiseman for House of Blueeyes’ Spring/Summer 2010 “I Feel Love” collection.
Around her waist she wore the black latex Diana waist waspie with lace filigree trim by Atsuko Kudo.
Underneath her dress she wore the Saint Laurent Imperiale suede platform pumps from the Fall/Winter 2009 collection.
For her one-of-a-kind ‘Paparazzi’ performance, Gaga wore a unique one-sleeved white lace cut-out bodysuit with puff sleeves, gemstone-embellishment and lace cape all custom-made by Haus of Gaga.
Her pearl and ostrich feather skull mask is custom Keko Hainswheeler and she’s rocking customized white Dagger-3000 boots by Pleaser.
The dancers all rocked bespoke Jaiden Rva James costumes.
Gaga accepted her Best New Artist award in a red lace dress with long train, full-length sleeves and attached mask from Alexander McQueen’s Fall/Winter 1998 collection dubbed “Joan”.
This look was meant to be a continuation of her performance, with the red lace symbolizing the eternal martyrdom of fame.
She also wore matching red lace wrist ruffle gloves and a crown by Haus of Gaga.
The look was completed with Christian Louboutin’s red patent Lady Page pumps with ruffled red velvet bows on the front.
For the audience & after party look Gagaloo went for a white sequinned chiffon tank dress by Jean Paul Gaultier.
She switched between a custom Philip Treacy feather helmet and an Alex Noble white lace and pearl veil headpiece.
Her crystal-embellished choker and bangles, which are all attached together with a chain is designed by Patricia Field.
For her final look, which she wore to the press room, Gaga asked Jean Paul Gaultier to create the Venus-inspired padded bodysuit seen on the Fall/Winter 2009 Haute Couture runway. This was a collaboration with Serkan Cura Couture.
Slouchy black sequined patent leather boots from Viktor & Rolf’s Fall/Winter 2009 “Statues” collection completed the look.

headcanons:
he does not make much of a fuss out of his birthday; in fact, most people outside of the volière don’t know when his birthday is, and there is a current betting pool in his gov classes about when it is. (leading bet? 25th of december because then it would explain the god complex)
from ten to thirteen, he was sent to his maternal grandparents in surrey, england and attended school there. from thirteen to eighteen, he was schooled in eton college. during these years, he changed his way of speaking and adopted an english accent (received pronunciation) to fit in. his time at whitebridge has dulled his accent somewhat, but it’s still there.
he hates being called percival or percy. do not call him that or he’ll go the fuck off. in fact, depending on one’s relationship with him, the fact that his name’s percival estlin—and not just estlin—probably isn’t even known.
he’s an asshole. like for real. he plays up his charm but he’s nothing more than a rich bastard with more money than good sense OR morals so he’s 100% just out for himself.
he also hates The Poors so heads-up for classicism and elitism, as if that hasn’t already been made obvious
he has a porsche cayenne which is just useless in his possession since he likes walking around campus more than anything else. he also has a second car—a porsche 911 gt2 rs—but it’s in his family mansion in rochester, ny. technically, a third car (a land rover) also belongs to him but his father uses it more than he does.
he writes poetry in ancient greek and latin but he will never show any of that to anyone. he says it’s because it’s ‘meant to be heard’ which is true but he’ll still never perform it for anyone. try to be his exception lmao. (how? idk tbh)
he is so vain and his appearances matter a lot to him. he will probably be walking around campus in, huntsman, henry poole&co, and alexander mcqueen. his entire wardrobe for the day will probably be worth more than your average weekly wage, and it will entirely be in monochrome except for the hint of crimson. also, this scene from american psycho will probably describe him best but tone it down to 50% ( i just want ppl to watch this scene tbh )
also, re: that scene? that monologue also applies tbh. there’s an idea of an estlin but that’s just it, an idea, and ideas are not exactly entities.
more to be added soon !!

Let me take you on a journey. a dumb one.
Okay so I fell down the dumbest research rabbit hole, and I need someone to come with me.
So I've been getting more into sewing, and last week I was scrolling through Vogue Patterns website and I saw this pattern:
My brain upon seeing this awfully familiar outfit:
Join me on the dumb research journey I went on this week.
Before I start, I’d like it on the record that I 10000% do not support the orange teratoma or anyone associated with him. I just was really fascinated by this specific topic for and then fell down a rabbit hole of research. January 2016, the orange Cheeto was inaugurated and the less said about that the better- the only thing I’d like to note about the whole affair is that during the inauguration Melania Trump was wearing a rather stylish blue coat and dress combo, which was a custom Ralph Lauren outfit. Custom meaning it was created specifically for Melania, for this event. There was a whole lot of hullabaloo about who was going to dress Melania for the event, with many designers outright refusing (bless them). Ralph Lauren explained why he agreed to dress Melania, but honestly I don’t give a shit.
A year and a half later, Vogue Patterns released a pattern (V9266) in their fall collection that looks identical to the blue coat and jacket, down to the dart placement on the dress. It was even made in the same colour for the pattern photo. The lookbook for the 2017 fall collection was released in July 2017. Vogue Patterns is owned by the McCall Pattern Company, as of 2001.
Fashion, especially fast fashion, has a history of copycat fashion, due to the way American copyright laws are structured, but this whole thing got me thinking- what kind of history is there of this outside of the fast fashion world? Was this common prior to the rise of fast fashion? What about patterns? Is the pattern of the Ralph Lauren dress being published by Vogue a common occurrence, or is this just an unusual case? Did Ralph Lauren tell Vogue, go ahead publish my dress, or did Vogue just say fuck it and blatantly copy him? Tell me the truth, Vogue Patterns, I need to know!!
Buckle up y’all, it’s time for a very cursory history lesson on counterfeit fashion.
Jewelry counterfeiting can be traced back to the 1800s, and probably later, with sly counterfeiters passing off “paste” jewels (paste meaning made of a type of glass) as the real things. However, you can see the intrinsic value of precious and semi-precious stones, but the value of a design of clothing seems less evident. Obviously people have wanted to dress like rich/famous people since the dawn of time, but when did copying specific designers come about?
In the 1860s, Charles Worth began signing his labels on his dresses, arguably making this the first “designer label”. Worth’s garments were highly sought after and were also exceptionally expensive. So, people started to copy his work. Just the act of labeling his clothing made it easier to forge his work, since just the label itself could make you think the garment was from the house of Worth even if it didn’t look like any of his designs.
Jumping ahead a century, in the 1900s, employees of Bergdorf Goodman would travel each year to Paris to purchase samples of garments from designers to take back to New York so that they could reproduce them and sell them to customers. While this wasn’t a case of counterfeiting patterns, perhaps this is one of the branches that leads to it? It’s easy to imagine an employee sneaking out a pattern or sample to make copies independently of the licenced retailers at Bergdorf Goodman.
In that vein, Elizabeth Hawke, an American fashion designer, was employed at one point as a “covert sketcher” by a dressmaker known for making high-quality, illegal knockoffs of designer clothing in the early 1900s. (Someone make me a blockbuster movie about this woman please)
In the 1940s-1950s Christian Dior’s New Look was so incredibly popular and in demand that many counterfeits popped up across the globe- including ones made by American fashion designer Nettie Rosenstein. Interestingly enough, she modified Dior’s silhouette to make it more accessible to the average person, notably by reducing the yardage in one dress from 15 yards to 7 yards.
During this era, department store employees that attended Dior’s couture shows had to pay an entry fee, which also went towards the purchase of a sample as well as the license to copy it.
Decades later, the process of copying designs is a lot simpler and (tragically) doesn’t involve employing covert sketchers. Rather than needing to get a hold of the actual garments, fast fashion manufacturers have instant access to the latest collections once they’re published online. This means that the timeline from original on the runway to counterfeit in the mall can be as short as two weeks.
All of this is really interesting, and the copyright laws surrounding sewing patterns and designers are super whack, but this doesn’t answer my ultimate question of WHY DOES VOGUE PATTERN 9266 EXIST?!
The Melania Trump outfit isn’t the only occasion where pattern companies have released patterns for well known outfits. Simplicity and McCalls have both released many look-a-like patterns for costumes worn on Game of Thrones, The Addams Family, The Hobbit, and Mirror Mirror (you know… that Julia Roberts movie from 2012?? me neither).
Due to my own lack of knowledge on couture fashion, I wasn’t able to locate any other cases of designer looks being reproduced by pattern companies. So, like, they might exist? But as I am a fashion newb, I was unable to find any further examples.
What I did find is that some designers have collaborated with Vogue Patterns to release licensed sewing patterns. For example, Vogue released 11 patterns by Alexander McQueen for Givenchy between 1998 and 2002.
More importantly, I discovered that Ralph Lauren had done the same thing with Vogue Patterns in the past as well! I found photos of patterns from the 1970s to the 1990s. However, something to note about these patterns is that they were all very clearly labeled “Ralph Lauren” in all capital letters, which Vogue Pattern 9266 lacks.
So, conclusion? Tl;DR? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Vogue Patterns and Ralph Lauren have a history of collaboration, but V9266 doesn’t have the same labeling. Also, if Ralph Lauren had decided to give Vogue Patterns his pattern to license and distribute, why would it take a year and a half? Couldn’t he just like email them his notes or whatever? Conclusion: I have no fucking clue you guys. Someone with an actual background in this field needs to take over for me.
In conclusion, I think the blue dress/coat combo is really stylish and I’m super annoyed that it was worn by someone I want absolutely no association with because otherwise I’d be 100% down for making my own. Morals : 1 Fashion : 0

Oprah Winfrey is the Latest Powerful, Inspiring Black Woman to Appear on the Cover of British Vogue
Oprah is no stranger to magazine covers – she’s appeared on every single cover of O magazine since its inception in 2000 – but now she’s taking her influence across the pond to appear on the August cover of British Vogue.
This was an incredibly regal experience. Thank you @edward_enninful and @britishvogue for making me Empress for a day. And @mertalas, @macpiggott…a dream I didn’t even know I had to be photographed by you two.
A post shared by Oprah (@oprah) on Jul 2, 2018 at 10:55am PDT
Oprah Winfrey is the latest in a series of powerful, inspiring Black women to be featured on the cover of Edward Enninful’s British Vogue, including Adwoa Aboah and Gugu Mbatha-Raw. Enninful was appointed editor-in-chief of British Vogue in April 2017 and is the first Black editor of a mainstream British fashion magazine.
This is Oprah’s second Vogue cover. In 1998, she famously graced the cover of the October issue of American Vogue in what Anna Wintour refers to as “one of our mostsuccessful covers.” Wintour admits she suggested Winfrey lose wight to appear on the cover. “It was a very gentle suggestion,” she revealed in a TV interview. Oprah appeared on the cover wearing a strapless gown under the tagline “Oprah! A Major Movie, An Amazing Makeover.”
No such dictates haunt the new cover of British Vogue. Oprah looks her zaftig self, wearing a ruffled taffeta dress by Stella McCartney – who also dressed Winfrey for the recent Royal Wedding – and poses with the haughty, refined poise of a mid-century model in a Richard Avedon photograph. In addition to the McCartney dress, Oprah wore a made-to-order duchesse-satin dress by Alexander McQueen as well as a custom gown and bejewelled shoes by Erdem.
” Thanks @BritishVogue @edwardenninful @mertalas @macpiggott. for the regal experience, felt like an “Empress 4 a day!,” Oprah wrote on Twitter.
In accompanying story, Oprah quashes any hopes of an #Oprah2020 presidential campaign. “In that political structure – all the non-truths, the bullshit, the crap, the nastiness, the backhanded backroom stuff that goes on – I feel like I could not exist,” Winfrey says. “I would not be able to do it. It’s not a clean business. It would kill me.”
Oprah also took the opportunity to apply her ‘power of positive thinking’ philosophy to the #MeToo movement: “People talk about ‘these are such dark times’, but what if we shift the paradigm? Because I see it differently. I see, ‘Isn’t this remarkable that we’re waking up?’… You’ve got to lean to the happiness,” she says.
The cover hits newsstands on July 6th.
