Today's yap: Commedia dell'arte & Gay subtext; Why is Közi dressed as the Pierrot in Verte Aile?

I've talked about this on Twitter a few months ago but since it is now banned to me i'll post my thoughts here as well. Hear me out.

First of all, let's just summarize the plot: Gackt and Judith are a happy couple who live with the nobleman Kami, Judith's brother Yu~ki and Mana, a maid/prostitute. Everything was fine until Gackt dreamed that a misfortune would befall them. Worried, he and Judith go to visit a fortune teller who, after a blood pact, warns them that they are cursed and Judith will die. Gackt gets depressed and spends his days at the bar lamenting the inevitable. When Judith finally dies, Gackt is left with the regret of not having enjoyed the time he still had with her.

There is also a subplot involving the hooded man and the book that leads to Gekka no Yasoukyoku PV, but that's not the focus right now.

You see, the Pierrot is originally a Commedia dell'arte character. It was an improvised form of theater, the shows took place on improvised stages and carts, the actors using whatever they could find around. The plot of the plays usually revolved around stories of lovers who could not stay together or master-servant relationships. the actors wore masks to play their characters, which were usually the same regardless of the story. Here are the three most relevant ones: Arlecchino, Colombina and Pierrot.

The most popular script involving them is simple: Pierrot is in love with Colombina and writes letters to her in secret, as he doesn't have the courage to confess his feelings. Then he gets his heart broken when Colombina gets with Allerchinno, who is more charismatic and flirtatious. Basically a love triangle.

Now, what does this have to do with Verte Aile?The thing is that there is also a love triangle, although more subtle. Gackt, Judith and Kami, I wouldn't say Kami is in love with Judith though, but with Gackt.

Notice that while Kami's character is in the spotlight, he's always looking at the couple, especially at Gackt. His expression is not one of joy though, he looks upset. And just like Pierrot, he does nothing but watch.

back to Közi, in his pantomime play is interesting to note how the soundtrack gives us clues about the characters' feelings. The scene begins with Közi performing a cheerful song, we have a close-up on each of the characters watching the performance and then... when the camera stops on Kami, he is gazing at Gackt and the music becomes melancholic.

Közi then simulates crying in his performance and cut his wrist, which Kami also did soon after that.

Also, Közi was wearing a mask that he took off just before he cut himself. Kami is the only character to appear wearing masks after this (Bel Air PV.) The mask may symbolize the feelings he was hiding the whole time.

I believe Közi's Pierrot symbolizes Kami's feelings for Gackt. seems very plausible to me, since it's not the first time Malice Mizer includes queer elements and Gackt participated in the script writing. If you know him you know he includes BL in his works quite often.

If you don't like this theory, you can also just say that Kami was in love with Judith. But I honestly don't see him paying any special attention to her during the movie. So it's up to you! Maybe I'll write more another day. ^3^

You squinted, trying your best to see through the fog and downpour. It offered virtually no help, so all you could do was return your attention to the monster in front of you.

It was tall, much taller than you. Yet still, the only time you'd see its form is when it cut through the fog with a large fist. So the flash of white fur lasted only for a moment before you heard the sparkle of ice, which meant another attack you had to spend all of your energy to dodge.

“Monsieur Neuvillette! Look out, I can't tell where the monster is aiming to hit!” You called. But other than that, the only thing you could do was keep your ears peeled. There was no visibility. None of your senses would help drag you out of this mess.

But if you would do anything, it would be coming out victorious.

“Thank you,” the voice came from some distance behind you. Neuvillette's voice was almost in sync with the large crash of ice and it sent a shiver down your spine.

Though perhaps, it was from the chilled air and not the thought of losing him to the monster. He was strong enough to survive this after all, was he not?

You questioned if you were only slowing him down. But in your foolish distracted mind, you nearly missed another slash from the monster.

One hit and you'd be instantly frozen. You wanted to curse the rain, but you couldn't find it in yourself to do so. The storm would rage on, as it was meant to. That was just the way of life.

The tip of your sword finally made contact with the monster after being tossed around aimlessly.

It screamed and it howled, begging for another chance. It hurt knowing this monster was not always this way. Lawachurls, just like the rest of their kind, used to be regular citizens of Khaenri’ah. You winced at the pain it was experiencing like it was your own.

You pulled your sword out.

“We did it. I'm still confused why a frostarm lawachurl would be in Fontaine, let alone bring a bundle of fog with it…” You turned to where you assumed Neuvillette was.

You were right in expecting him there, but what you didn't expect was him to be staring straight at you with a smile while the lawachurl—in its last few breaths of life—began to run straight at him from behind.

“Neuvillette!” You yelled, the rest of the sentence falling short as your brain was only occupied with the thought: save him.

Could you run fast enough, could you make it there? You were only a few steps away, but it felt like he was light-years far from you. Time slowed, but the lawachurl did not. Another step forward, another moment closer—

You pushed Neuvillette aside. He wore an expression of shock as he fell off balance, landing on the wet ground. The rain had already let up a few seconds ago, his stress getting lighter after the lawachurl was defeated and you weren't in danger anymore. But in the thick fog, he hadn't realized the monster still wasn't properly downed.

So when he blinked, trying to regain his senses after being knocked onto the ground, the sight he saw made him feel ill. There was not even a breath of time before the rain began to pour down harder.

Harder than it had ever been before. Not when he lost precious Melusines, not when he saw people lose themselves to the hands of justice, not when the people of Fontaine were doomed to fall.

The lawachurl was in the grass and the fog was nearly gone. But before him lay your body, claw marks covering your chest. It dawned on him exactly why he was on the ground.

You had tried to save his life. But now, you faced the consequences as a single tear streamed down your face.

“We were supposed to come out victorious, Neuvillette. We still did, didn't we? This was bound to happen…” You paused, “Right?”

He couldn't handle it.

“It wasn't, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry, [Name].” He spoke, his voice low and shaky. “It was raining because of me. The fog– it wouldn't have been that bad if I hadn't been the reason for the storm. It was because I was scared you'd get hurt but here you are…” He mumbled. He didn't say it, but it was obvious he meant to say ‘because of me.’

“Don't look at me with such a sad face. I thought the Hydro Dragon doesn't cry,” sheepishly, you smiled. But you could no longer see after these words. It hurt too much to keep your eyes open.

A nap sounded nice.

“Maybe not the Hydro Dragon, but Neuvillette can cry. If not for the court, then perhaps for his beloved's injured state.”

“Who said I'm your beloved?” Somehow, you could still laugh. Albeit, it came out a lot weaker than you would've liked it to.

“I, Neuvillette, did. Please, don't fall asleep, [Name]. You mean too much to me,” even if he would be considered weak for having such feelings towards a mere human.

“I won't.”

You knew it was a lie. He knew it was a lie. Even as your eyes did close a minute later. Even as he picked you up into his arms, carrying you back to the Court of Fontaine bridal style. Even while it poured for days after, like a cursed storm. Even while Neuvillette, Iudex of Fontaine, beat himself up for such a ridiculous mistake.

He could only hope that you would wake up soon. If at all.

Genesis: I actually HATED Genesis initially in the og CC game. I thought he was a lame addition and just like… idk, they wanted Gackt in the game so they made his presence plot relevant? OOOUGH, I was so mad… But then I saw how the rpc and fandom treats him, which is honestly even WORSE SOMEHOW??? So I decided to try writing him seriously and what do you know, I actually kinda like it.

Verdot: I literally have to make the content I wanna see in this rpc, such is my burden. my curse...

(OCs) - I wanted to write about the themes I have on my pinned and honestly, there were so many Tseng rpers who I am friends and mutuals with that knock it out of the fucking ballpark- I just didn't feel like I'd have ANYTHING new or good to contribute to the exploration of his character? So I made an OC :P And he's really changed so much! I remember when I was still making my own art for him and he wasn't QUITE like there the way I wanted him to be, but I didn't have anything better to employ as a faceclaim or reference to draw from. And then Cas was like "btw here's a manga about your HYPERFIXATION" and Kokonoi's general appearance and vibe was a great starting point to go off of instead.

Anyway, There's always things I had planned for Jae in the works or on the backburner, but he has really evolved over the span of years I've been writing him, so I really appreciate every person who took the time to check him out and build something with him.

ɪꜱ ᴛʜᴇʀᴇ ᴀɴʏᴛʜɪɴɢ ʏᴏᴜ ᴅᴏɴ'ᴛ ʟɪᴋᴇ ᴛᴏ ᴡʀɪᴛᴇ?

You know, I have been becoming more lenient with allowing myself to write certain things. I always end up being afraid of how people will react to certain themes I explore because... let's be real, a lot of people are pretty intolerant to opinions that are different than theirs. So long as whatever I and/or my partner explore is handled with the care and respect it deserves, I don't really see an issue with much anymore. Hell, I was terrified to post that one drabble fleshing out Jae meeting Veld for the first time because I was afraid people would see Jae's reaction to killing someone as somehow 'excusing abuse' because he wasn't dancing on the guy's corpse and actually showed remorse for what he did. It's fears of what I write about being misconstrued like that that really makes me hesitant to even talk about certain ideas with partners. But I'm getting over that, little by little and step by step.

ɪꜱ ᴛʜᴇʀᴇ ᴀɴʏᴛʜɪɴɢ ʏᴏᴜ ʀᴇᴀʟʟʏ ᴇɴᴊᴏʏ ᴡʀɪᴛɪɴɢ?

I actually love writing (as you can tell) introspective pieces. Something where you're really getting inside the character's head for a moment to see past all of their walls and facades, or sometimes you're still seeing what they tell THEMSELVES is the real undiluted truth, but isn't. I just love that kinda stream of consciousness really dig deep into the VOICE of a character exploration. Makes me feel lots of emotions.

ʜᴏᴡ ᴅᴏ ʏᴏᴜ ᴄᴏᴍᴇ ᴜᴘ ᴡɪᴛʜ ʜᴇᴀᴅᴄᴀɴᴏɴꜱ?

Usually I'll be doing something else like watching a piece of media or listening to a podcast and start to think "Ooh, my muse would love this" or "this makes me think of xyz muse wow", and it just kind of expands organically from there.

ᴅᴏ ʏᴏᴜ ᴡʀɪᴛᴇ ɪɴ ꜱɪʟᴇɴᴄᴇ ᴏʀ ᴅᴏ ʏᴏᴜ ᴘʟᴀʏ ᴍᴜꜱɪᴄ?

Music helps get me inspired initially, especially since I make spotify playlists for all my muses (and ships :P), so generally I'm cool with music, but usually I zone in too much on my own writing to pay attention. It's like my sense of hearing turns off.

ᴅᴏ ʏᴏᴜ ᴘʟᴀɴ ʏᴏᴜʀ ʀᴇᴘʟɪᴇꜱ ᴏʀ ᴡɪɴɢ ᴛʜᴇᴍ?

Both- There's always a general sort of... idea or outcome that me and my partner would LIKE to shoot for? And sometimes we just don't get there, because it really depends on what the characters do/say and how it's taken by the other muse.

For example, I was roleplaying a thread with @steeleidolon's Kunsel where he and Jae are trying to broker a deal and Kunsel ends up saying something to the effect of "your people" and he means the Turks. Jae, on the other hand, hears 'your people' and assumes Kunsel was bringing up his race and the perception of fellow people from Wutai or Hanuel being unfairly insular. So, it kinda went to shit, LOL.

It's little things like that that can color your muse's reaction to sometimes very different degrees than what you plan for!

ᴅᴏ ʏᴏᴜ ᴇɴᴊᴏʏ ꜱʜɪᴘᴘɪɴɢ?

I like complicated dynamics and no, I will never shut up about them. Ships for me don't even have to strictly be romantic or sexual in nature, so like- I have some interactions I'm still feeling out with @saishuu-heiki that are platonic but leaning in a distinctly enemy/frenemy/challenges other person kind of vibe? And I think it's great! They don't HAVE to be like "we're friends, we're lovers, or we hate each other'- Like, limiting all your interactions to one of those three options gets really boring for me...

ok first of all, I just think this is hilarious: I did not edit this sprite at all. this is just straight up a clerk from gen v. suit and tie? check. dark hair? check. running on not enough sleep and far too much caffeine? check. no changes needed

species: banette

ability: cursed body

item: spell tag

moves: poltergeist, facade, role play, destiny bond

ok so some Deep Lore about reeve is that he can control cait sith because he is an "inspire." to my knowledge this is only ever mentioned in supplemental material and there is not much detail at all on how this works or how common it is or... anything. wondering if they will address this in remake part 3.

banette is a marionette pokemon. now I know what you're gonna say. when you think about ffvii and puppets, reeve is NOT the character who comes to mind. I initially considered golurk or golem for a pokemon named inspire because a golem is a perfect fit as a being animated from inorganic matter. BUT neither of them really have movesets that are fitting, so I went with banette instead.

facade and role play represent how reeve hides his identity behind cait sith and acts very differently than he does irl. destiny bond I guess is because it doesn't super matter if cait sith dies because reeve can send a new one

ability: fur coat

item: loaded dice

moves: foul play, fury swipes, switcheroo, parting shot

here he is. the little guy himself. I chose alolan persian because he's got a bit of a dark side, and also because he looks a lil silly with his round noggin and big kitty cheeks. the ability fur coat is just because he's a cat, I didn't consider what it actually does at all lol.

the loaded dice item is a reference to his dice limit break in og as well as his roll o the dice ability in rebirth (which I assume is based on the og limit break anyway). in general many of cait sith's abilities and attacks are rng-dependent.

fury swipes is just a move that works well with the loaded dice, but fits the cat theme too. I chose foul play and switcheroo because of cait's shenanigans with the keystone

ability: magic guard

item: sticky barb

moves: moonblast, metronome, misty explosion, trick

clefable is much cuter than cait sith's moogle, but it's a chunkier fairy with lil wings on its back so I liked it for this.

the sticky barb is not super specifically linked to anything in particular, but cait sith has a bunch of tricks up his sleeve so it seemed like something he'd do.

metronome is another nod to how much cait sith's moves depend on rng, and you could even say it specifically represents his moogle magic ability in rebirth, where he uses an ability from his equipped summon. I chose misty explosion due to the moogle kaboom ability, where the moogle just fucking explodes when it leaves. trick is another nod to cait sith stealing the keystone

species: exploud

ability: scrappy

item: throat spray

moves: boomburst, uproar, disarming voice, roar

hp shout is cait sith's ultimate weapon in ffvii, although really I chose exploud more generally because all of cait sith's weapons are megaphones. the item and moves are all sound-based. not much to it other than that tbh

species: conkeldurr

ability: guts

item: flame orb

moves: facade, hammer arm, brick break, bulldoze

if anyone saw the name of this conkeldurr and had a fight or flight response, never fear - I'm not bringing gackt into this. yet. the world regenesis organization is basically the government or whatever that steps in after the events of ffvii when shinra is pretty much toast. and reeve is in charge. conkeldurr is kinda weird, but I chose it both because the wro is working to rebuild after meteor and because reeve was the director of urban planning in shinra.

the move facade is similar to the theme I went with for some of his other pokemon, since reeve kinda hides behind cait sith for a lot of his taking action. the other three moves are just based on construction-related tools, materials, and activities

species: blacephalon

ability: beast boost

item: air balloon

moves: mind blown, shadow ball, psyshock, trick

the gold saucer is cait sith's stomping grounds. blacephalon is just a silly little guy and a clown, which seemed fitting for an amusement park. he's carrying around a balloon for a similar reason. the balloons in the gold saucer in rebirth are so freakin cute.

mind blown could be based on the fireworks at the gold saucer, but I could also point to the moogle kaboom ability again, just for fun. trick again for more item snatching.

next up should be vincent. in the meantime, other characters are found here

ok just watched the Bel air movie and if I'm not wrong? I think it's about a man (Gackt) who has a wife who has two brothers (Kami and Yu~ki) and a maid (Mana). they're doing fine until they go to a fortune teller (Közi) and she predicts like tragedy or a curse? and then with Gackt's nightmares + a clown's (also Közi) suicide performance he starts to neglect his wife and drinking and going to prostitutes (also Mana) until one day he finds out through her brothers that she killed herself so he goes immediately back to her place but he finds her already dead. then I think their souls meet afterwards but she ignores him while their souls cross the bridge. I can't figure out the role of the man with the book though

do correct me if I'm wrong on anything this is just my first impression after watching the movie
