Campaign Recap: Session 0

Joe and Sxaxha made their way from their respective homes to Central City, where they’d heard the Witchlight Carnival was going to set up sometime soon.

Joe hitched a ride with Ellywick Tumblestrum, who was there specifically for her, traveling from the Solan City of Eclipses to Central. Along the way, Ellywick saw her without her disguise, but treated her with the same kind, fun-loving demeanor. They shared stories and played music along the way. When they got to the city, Ellywick told Joe she’d find a way to get her a ticket to the Carnival, though its wouldn’t open until tomorrow. She then took her to the Golden Grotto Farm, where she promised a friend would be able to keep her until then.

Sxaxha discovered his knack for burrowing underground, and used that to sneak through the shortcut tunnels used to deliver ore and metals to the rest of the world. Pierwhit, a faerie-dragon familiar, ended up having to follow him the whole way after just barely missing him in Terramine. When they made it to the city, Sxaxha finally noticed that he was being followed and, intrigued by the faerie-dragon, agreed to be led to the Golden Grotto farm with the promise that it would help him regain his smile.

This is where Joe and Sxaxha met, after Joe spent some time being unable to see him thanks to his stealth. It was revealed that they were both brought here for a specific reason, to help one Madryk Roslof with a task. Joe vaguely recognized the name, Sxaxha did not. While Joe is more than ready to go inside and hear Madryk’s request, Sxaxha doesn’t trust this situation, prompting Pierwhit to fetch Madryk and bring him to the front gate to talk.

Joe managed to quickly win Sxaxha over with her penchant for rambling and her fun personality. He thinks she is incredibly funny and likes her already.

Sxaxha intimidates Joe. She is unable to tell when he is in a good mood versus when he’s genuinely unhappy with something. But she views them as friends.

Madryk shows up and watches the conversation until there’s a natural lull. Here, he relays his request: help him find his Warlock patron, the archfey Zybilna. As his magic is tied directly to her, and he’s getting along in age, it is rather unlikely that he would succeed should he try to undertake the task himself. He says that if they follow the path to finding her, they will find the people responsible for their respective curses. He also reveals that he knows exactly who the two of them are. He’s friends with Joe’s parents and has spoken with Fevni.

Upon Madryk’s request, Joe and Sxaxa follow him inside the house, where they both can tell that he is very well-off. Joe is taken in by the largest painting in the room: one of  a gorgeous Wood Elf named Valissa Goldenbow. He tells her that Valissa was his wife, and that even though she is gone, she left him with a wonderful gift. Sxaxha understands this to mean a child.

Madryk talks more about Zybilna and points out her painting. Upon seeing it, both Joe and Sxaxha recall a memory of her where she provided some comfort during hard times. For Joe, she brought a plethora of books and smiled at her through the window. For Sxaxha, she gave him a cupcake and promised that he’d find his joy again, even if he couldn’t show it. Both of these memories are fleeting, but provide a sense of comfort.

Sxaxha demands proof that this set-up isn’t a trap. Madryk can’t offer any, but offers Iora as collateral instead, since he intends to send them along anyway and he knows his own intentions are pure, guaranteeing their safety. He says they can heal, which will keep them alive. Sxaxha agrees to this deal, but says that he would like to meet Iora first before fully accepting. The last thing he wants to do is travel with another stranger. He does offer a kindness to Madryk by offering to get him something before he goes, though.

Joe, overwhelmed by all the information she’s been given, goes out for a walk-and-talk with Bricker-Brak. She leaves a feather on her chair, which Sxaxha notices. While on this while, she comes across Iora, who’d just smashed a pumpkin to paste with their hammer. Bricker-Brak wheezes, making Iora laugh despite themself. This is the scene Sxaxha comes upon.

With the three finally converged, Joe suggest doing ice-breakers. Sxaxha asks Iora’s intentions. They answer honestly and say that they want to find Zybilna and get home as quickly as possible. Iora asks Joe’s and Sxaxha’s intentions. Joe wants something to eat. Sxaxha wants to get into the Carnival and take care of his business. Iora accepts these answers and prompts Joe to ask her ice-breaker question.

After a tangent, Joe asks what Iora’s and Sxaxha’s biggest regrets would be if they died right then. Upon seeing the looks on their faces, she wonders if she should’ve asked for favorite colors instead. Iora answers yellow. Sxaxha answers purple. Joe says she loves all colors.

After some more conversation, the three of them decide to get snake-on-a-stick together. Joe runs off to recast Disguise Self. She also goes through everything with Bricker-Brak and asks if she’s over her head. He reassures her that she can do this. Meanwhile, Iora ran off to check with Madryk and, seeing how Sxaxha and Joe kept making them laugh, grab their cloak so they can hide their face.

The three find a popular cart run by Goldenscale and Goregut: a talkative, exuberant dragonborn with a love for loud cheer and his quiet but just as excitable wife who cooks all the food. Joe, after screaming at the top of her lungs, earns a discount and orders the best thing on the house along with a bag of bugs. That earns her three huge hunks of anaconda.

The three new ‘friends’ sit down and dig in. Joe pulls out utensils and starts eating like the delicate elf she is, while Sxaxha pulls from his dragon instincts and horks his portion down. Iora borrows a fork and pulls apart theirs with their fingers. Once Joe loses all delicate sensibilities, though, they swiftly join and eat like a messy dragon too. The three of them talk, have a good time, and share the bag of bugs, finding amusement in Joe eating a giant millipede and becoming slightly paralyzed in the mouth. Afterwards, they head out for candied apples.

Chelastian Campaign #5.b - Battle at Karloff’s

As the party rests, Tohmoh’s unseen servant reports that Sheriff Chaney is gathering a small army to rise up against the party under the charges of plotting to murder, assaulting an official, and treason. The party discovers an empty mine tunnel and plan on going up there, dealing with Chaney later.

Our returning PC’s are:

Sir John “Ducky” Mallard, level 3 Human Paladin who has sworn the Oath of the Ancients. Son of Duke Mallard, Ducky was sent to the Diamond Hills mercenary guild as a silencing tactic.

Tohmoh the Damarrion, level 3 Human Warlock with Cthulu as a patron. Joined the Diamond Hills mercenary guild as a way to gain power while helping others.

Marrow, level 3 dhampir Bard, as played by @the-pantsing-panda

Rohss, level 3 Half-Elf Ranger, guardian of the forest.

Aiyiri, level 3 Khajit Fighter with a two-weapon fighting style, former assassin.

Captain Voess, level 2 Half-Orc Barbarian, and pirate. Also member of the Diamond Hills mercenary guild.

Rorimac “Rori” Bracegirdle, level 2 Halfling rogue, and a member of the Dauntless of Silverstring City

Our Companions, who don’t feature in this game, are:

Fred, a devotee to the Mallard family who admires Ducky and most polishes armor

George, a more grumbly fellow who washes boots and sharpens swords, and has a fine word to say about being essentially a manservan

We are introduced to the PC for a player who also may not make it every game:

Ulfric Stormcloak, level 1 Dwarven fighter, smithy of Sapphire Lake Town.

Marrow and Rori appear from tunnel. Rori screams at Tohmoh, declaring him to be a cannibal warlock. The party out of character debates whether a human eating a halfling would be considered cannibalism, considering their different races. It was decided that if two creatures share skintypes and intelligence levels, it’s considered cannibalism. Therefore, a dragon can eat a salamander and it isn’t cannibalism, but a human cannot eat a halfling, dwarf, or elf without it technically counting as cannibalism.

Tohmoh then clears his name once Rori reveals his captor’s name had been Johmbo. Tohmoh isn’t surprised. His “grandpa” went crazy a long time ago, and the family had disowned him. Tohmoh was the only one to follow in Johmbo’s footsteps and unwittingly dedicated his life to the same god. As he begins to realize that his devotion might drive him just as mad as his grandfather, Tohmoh also decides to start being more selfless and make his legacy better.

We also, as a note, discover that Voess loves cats. In fact, as he realizes that Aiyiri is part feline, he slowly gets closer to her, wanting to “pet the kitty kitty.”

Rori lets the party know that Karloff has a place he calls home, and it’s located somewhere above them. He then begins leading the party to it.

- MEANWHILE -

Ulfric Stormborn, of the Sapphire Lake Town, has been exploring the mines. Although familiar with the local lore, he has always felt like the mines couldn’t be barren, and has spent a few days searching for any gems.

He stumbles into a large room that is encircled by the lake. On both sides of the cavern are waterfalls, which pour sixty feet down into a pool. The pool then continues on through the mountain. Although Ulfric is aware that he’s too far up for the lake to be pouring downwards, he doesn’t thinking too hard on the fact. There is a safety fence built out of rope and iron bars.

The room has a small alter in the corner, barrels of rotten fruit and vegetables, two large bookshelves with a collection of encyclopedia's and historical records from 100 years ago, and a large firepit in the center. Ulfric hears someone approaching and ducks behind the barrels, rolling an 18 to Stealth.

None of the party sees Ulfric as they enter. Ducky and Tohmoh go for the books, seemingly unimpressed by their perfect condition and collectors value. Voess goes for the fountain because it sparkles and books bore him. Marrow opens a few barrels to confirm that the food is rotten, which Aiyiri could smell before the lids came off and which overwhelmed her senses after.

Aiyiri stumbles to the side of the “room” and peers over the rope. She notices a small, pink lizard skittering around, slowly climbing up. As she warns the others, a purple lizard jumps up over the rope barrier, giggling.

The creature is described as a lizard that would stand 5 foot tall on it’s hind legs, with a distinctly dragon appearance if a dragon was drawn by someone who loved flowers. It’s wings more resembled a butterfly’s than a dragon’s, and it’s scales sparkled, like glitter.

It’s a faerie dragon, not that the party succeeds any of their Nature checks.

The party is hesitant to attack the creatures, aware of Karloff’s Charm and mind-control trickery. They decide to try and tame it. Ducky succeeds, offering the dragons food from his bag (the player was actually completely unaware of the Faerie Dragon, so this was delightful).

Another dragon appears, also purple in color, but more glittery, appearing pink in certain lights. Tohmoh tries to offer it food, but Ulfric ruins the moment by attacking, surprising everyone by his sudden appearance. Aiyiri tries to eat the dragon, and then argues with it about taking her food. It winds up casting a spell and making her give it the food it knows she’s hiding.

Marrow is hit by it’s purple, glittery gas and almost runs over the edge. Rori dives to hide in the firepit.

The battle ends as Tohmoh and Ducky calm the dragons down. One dragon offers safe passage, and the other promises answers. Before the party can claim their reward, Karloff appears. He stomps, and stamps, and, like a child throwing a tantrum, screams about them ruining his plans.

He Charms Voess, then tries to stand back and let the Half Orc do his damage. Ducky sees Voess entering a rage, and challenges him to a duel in order to protect the others.

Aiyiri doesn’t listen -- she strikes at Voess, missing her first attack and landing her second. Voess ignores Aiyiri and charges at Ducky. Ducky hits him hard, but he hits Ducky harder.

Ulfric and Tohmoh go after Karloff, both recognizing that he’s the real source of trouble and not Voess. Ulfric lands a powerful attack, and Tohmoh misses with an Eldritch blast.

Karloff attacks them with lightning, then starts running for the door. Marrow and Ulfric take opportunity attacks, weakening Karloff severely. Marrow then tries a spell, and fails.

Ducky and Voess swing at each other again, with Aiyiri deciding to take a step back. 

Aiyiri: “I don’t care. This isn’t my fight.”

Ducky will remember that...

Anyway, Ducky hurts Voess again, but Voess rolls critical. He digs his axes into Ducky’s chest, cutting straight through his breastplate, and leaving Ducky struggling for life.

Tohmoh sees this and comes to his friend’s rescue. He jumps in and casts Dissonant Whispers, sending such pain into Voess that he flees. Ulfric then, not emotionally attached enough to be distracted by Voess, lands the killing blow against Karloff.

Karloff, dying: “I... failed?”

Rori appears with a potion of Cure Wounds to help Ducky, who also lays hands on himself (must be nice, being a paladin). With everything calming down, the party turn to the biggest surprise -- Ulfric. The Dwarf explains what he was doing up there, posing the question, at the same time: “Who owns the mine? They tell me you can’t. I want to.”

As he’s explaining, he spots some ruby and digs it out. He tucks it away into his pack, and the player, in the face of potential fortune, forgets that Ulfric intended to use it to prove the mines weren’t barren. Marrow collects the encyclopedias, because he understands the value of knowledge.

He still doesn’t read them, though...

The Dragons answer some questions. They reveal that Karloff was a doppelganger who had come into town shortly after the real Karloff. He had taken on Karloff’s identity and learned how to cast magic by reading Karloff’s journals. The real Karloff had met his fate at the hands of the basilisk, and was one of many statues residing in the bowels of the mine.

They also reveal that Rohss made it home safe, and the mountains are home to a tunnel into the Underworld that the Mages had been digging for reasons unknown to the dragons.

One of the dragons, named Cupcake, falls to Ducky’s natural 20 Animal Handling roll and joins them as a companion.

The party, with Voess helping Ducky, head back down. Ulfric uses the fact that Sheriff Chaney lost a bet during a card game to him in order to talk Chaney and his mob down from attacking the PC’s. There is also a debate triggered about whether or not Karloff really “owned” his cave, and if he did, does Ulfric now own it by law of battle. 

Him and Chaney IC argue about it, while everyone else OOC argues about it. I’ve never seen property law become such a touchy subject in a D&D game before...

Oh, the party also explain to the mob that Karloff is dead, which helps to calm it down. They view Chaney as overreacting a bit, and disperse. 

Chaney allows them to stay at the inn. After Chaney explains that Victor the innkeeper had been beheaded “for justice”, Ulfric decides he now owns the Seahorse. Chaney tells him he only needs to find the deed, as Victor had no next of kin, and Chaney doesn’t really care what happens to it.

Nobody seems disturbed by Chaney’s obvious lack of compassion, nor his overuse of the law in order to kill. One player has to leave to pick someone up from work, so the PC’s make their way to the inn, where they fall into a troubled sleep.

Alternative Universe Bloom: Aesthetic Board

A dragon flame faerie and a princess, a fire sign with cardinal modality. Very much into cooking in general, but especially into baking cupcakes and gingerbread cookies. Her favorite food is pizza, and favorite season - winter. Pretty much a bookworm, her favorite field is history of magic. She and Kiko the Bunny are basically inseparable.

Sun Aries: a larger than life personality with a knack for leadership and a bit of an impulsive streak.

Moon Taurus: a very mellow, down-to-earth person who may struggle with being too guarded.

Ascendant Sagittarius: fun-loving and adventurous, not afraid to reinvent and start over.

MY THOUGHTS / FANGIRLING

My Japanese cherry-tree faery avatar sim Sakura is an explosion of pink. I imagine her cupcake tastes like straight up sugar. It’s got candy sprinkles, jelly filling, cherry syrup, one of those edible icing flower cake-topper things, and is topped off with a giant maraschino cherry. Wrap it up with a cute obi bow and viola--diabetes on a plate.

Sakura’s beau Ryuu is an albino serpentine shadow dragon, so his cupcake is shaped like a giant horned and winged snake. I shudder to think why his cupcake is grey--I would NOT want to eat that thing. Highly likely it’s poisoned.

Alec Lightwood-Bane has a blueberry cupcake, in honor of Malec’s warlock son Max (aka “Blueberry”). As the current Consul of the Clave over all the Shadowhunters, Alec’s a busy nephilim in Idris, and reads his correspondences while he eats.

Magnus Lightwood-Bane is fabulous, and his cupcake is too. I actually have no idea what it is. But it’s MAGIC! So not only is it delicious, but it likely also gets rid of wrinkles and unwanted body hair, and files your taxes for you.

Wei WuXian’s cupcake embodies what it means to be the infamous Mo Dao Zu Shi (Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation). It’s got the death’s head skull icing, and a crescent moon of dark chocolate. Red velvet and chocolate cake swirl about like the blood-soaked dead soil of WWX’s base in the Burial Mounds, and the battlefields where the Yiling Laozu reanimated hordes of feral corpses to defeat his foes. The coffin-like cupcake wrapper holds resentful energy back, so that WWX can rest in peace during his 13-year long food coma. WWX’s favorite red hair ribbon is characteristically untidy, but there’s a touch of elegance to the black and red dish, decorated in his iconic colors.

TBH Lan WangJi’s “cupcake” is actually a snowcone, cuz eff the rules! I imagined it as one of those palette-cleansing treats fancy people eat between courses, like Mia Thermopolis in Princess Diaries (garnishes and all, LOL). It’s got a snow bunny mint candy on top, because of course it does, and is decorated with the ubiquitous GusuLan headband ribbon.

Agron has a whole social media account dedicated to posting his meal plans, so he sticks to his fitness regiments. But on Cheat Days he goes all out, piling on the carbs and fats with chocolatey cookie cupcake goodness. He’ll burn it all off with Nasir later. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Banana nut muffins and bread and cupcakes are some of my favorite snacks ever, so someone was gonna have to have one. Nasir, as usual, pulled the short stick, LOLOLOLOL.

I saw the swords decal and was like who the heck would have a frikkin weapon on their cupcake? Then it hit me--Geralt would. XD I dub this cupcake The White Wolf: it’s a chocolate cake topped with confectionery sugar like the snows over Kaer Morhen, and white icing like Geralt’s hair. The black wrapper is reminiscent of the leather armor of the Wolf School, and of course there’s 2 swords--steel for humans and silver for monsters. There’s a fork stabbing through the cupcake like the pitchfork the mob of peasants used to try and kill Geralt before he lost his memory. :P

Last but certainly not least is Yennefer’s cupcake, in an actual frikkin cup, because she’s a snob. XD True to form, her cake is dressed in black and white -- vanilla cake with chocolate swirls--a perfect compliment and polar opposite to Geralt’s tastes. And of course there’s a lilac flower, and gooseberry toppings, as per her signature perfume. Black raven/crow feathers from her Familiar add that final touch for the greatest sorceress this side of Nilfgaard.

Drowning Kings, Blood Baths and Bath Explosives

Jude is worried. She's been pacing in front of the bathroom for a few minutes now, twisting her fingers together. At first, she was just lounging on the bed, waiting for her husband to come out of his bath. 30 minutes passed. Then an hour. And now it's been two whole hours! She knows that it's important to respect someone's space, to respect their need to relax and be alone, but this is really pushing it, right? What if he's in danger?

Her immortal faerie husband killed by drowning in the tub. The image makes a hysterical laugh bubble out of her, but it's cut short by the fact that it truly is a possibility. Jude can fully imagine Cardan somehow managing to be defeated by a simple Mortal invention. So she takes a deep breath and slams her shoulder into the door, intending to break open the lock. But the door was not locked at all (not because Cardan is so comfortable with his wife which he is, but it's actually because he finds Mortal locks more than a tad bit confusing) so she stumbles in.

The sight that greets her eyes, makes her gasp and fall to her knees in front of the tub. Her heart is beating so so fast and that fear that she'd forgotten (an old frenemy) rises up again.

Cardan is confused. Well, first he was excited, then relaxed and now he's confused. "Darling, what's wrong?" he asks, one eye opening.

Jude looks shocked to see him respond, perhaps she thought he'd fallen asleep. "What's wrong?! You're- you're sitting in a pool of your blood!" She's yelling now, glaring at him (it reminds him of those times all those years ago when they'd fight. He loves that she's yelling out of concern for him now).

"Oh! Ah, I see that it looks quite gory now. It's actually just one of these bath explosives. They come in all colours, did you know?"

"Bath...explosive? Oh, you mean bath bombs," she sounds calmer now, like the fight's all gone out of her and she slumps against the side of the bathtub. He holds her shoulder with his soapy hand, and she leans into him. "Huh, you smell quite nice."

"Oh yes! These bath explosives are scented too! Aren't they simply marvellous? They even come in all sorts of shapes! There's even castles! And those miniature cakes (cupcakes) we tried once. Although they don't taste quite like them."

"Wait, what? Cardan, you've been eating the bath bombs?!" Jude is back at full energy now (she's at her best when she's fighting, on his side or against. Oh, he loves his warrior wife. That fire that shines in her eyes).

"No, no. I'm not daft. Of course I didn't try to castle or dragon ones, only the food shaped ones. And I stopped after a bite, they don't suit my taste," Cardan replies, a bit indignantly.

"Oh god," Jude says, collapsing against him in loud guffaws. "Only you, Cardan."

"What? What is it? Do the non-food ones also have some special flavour?" Cardan is confused at his wife (not for the first time and certainly not the last). He's enjoying her laughs but he would prefer to be in on the joke.

"None of them are meant to be eaten, my love. They're not edible," she tells him, kissing his cheek, consolingly.

"What?" he rears back, shocked. "Then why would they make them look like food? That's so very Mortal, always making everything unnecessarily confusing."

He still loves them though. Each day he tries out a new one and is suddenly ecstatic when it explodes in colour and scent and bubbles. The joy on his face is child-like (even though his childhood wasn't very full of joy) and not for the first time, Jude wonders what he'd have been like if he had grown up in the Mortal world.

His face moves closer to the water, his tongue out. "No! Cardan, I told you it's not edible!" Jude says rushing forward.

He sticks his tongue out at her instead and pulls her closer. "Oh, I know." He does something altogether different with his tongue and this, Jude doesn't complain about at all.

We lost a Froseth for this session because of ill effects from the booster. Still better than Covid, though. Also we had some technical difficulties as Marion wasn’t at her usual abode and the laptop she had access to was being wonky about connecting to the router and so she had to join in via her phone. We made it work. Anyway.

Remi collected Barnabus from the command tent of the local mercenaries. Remi brought Barnabus pancakes. The mercenaries were jealous. Barnabus made burritos out of pancakes and sausages to eat as they gathered to head out to town. They left Froseth behind for his very important conversation with Farideh.

They were tasked to stop on the way into town to deliver some breakfast to the wood elf refugees in the town treehouse. Hazel called out a hello and got shot at by twitchy wood elves. Then one of the wood elf refugees - specifically, Bannon, the kennel-master’s son who gave them the tour of the wood elf encampment they stopped in while in the Elvenwild - actually recognised them, and some conversation ensued to see if these wood elves had any more recent news about the Elvenwild than Rylan had. Apparently it’s still pretty bad - bad enough to try to shield the youngers from it and to get the youngers out before anything bad could happen to them. Bannon also rescued about a half-dozen blink dog puppies. So they had some playtime. That was fun.

Food delivered, they headed into town proper, and into the multi-faith shrine. They saw Estan first. Estan is still grumpy as ever, and also envious as fuck that the Cupcake Coterie’s gods love their flaily asses enough to give an aasimar permanent wings.

Rylan got the orange aventurine bracelet they continually wear enchanted by Lira as protection against the black corruption. Lira also reassured Rylan about the response Rylan would get to the particular suite of abilities that Rylan as a Shadow Sorcerer possesses.

Meanwhile, Barnabus got swarmed by faerie dragons. And when Rylan returned to the group, Rylan got swarmed by faerie dragons, except for the one violet faerie dragon that Polymorphed itself into a cat to get pettings. Meanwhile, Hazel had to bribe Sheepshank, the resident rope dragon, for access to the potatoes. Jerky was heavily involved.

Hazel and Alisaie made lunch. Rylan is not accustomed to spicy food. Lira brought out celebratory tarts for the occasion of Hazel’s first big officiated ceremony and Remi and Alisaie’s wedding.

Lira used TrueSight to navigate Hazel’s bag of weird-ass jelly beans.

They were going to go to Jenna’s forge next, but Alisaie dropped a Sending to Froseth first - after all, they were going to be asking questions about their Awakened Steelsinger weapons and Froseth has one so he would need to sit in on this (plus it was a great excuse to bring @miaaoi back next session).

I’m just so, so grateful that my players do love their fluff.

--- vala was setting up more cupcakes, lower lip between her teeth as she fixed one that had tipped over. she rolled her shoulders as she sat up, setting the cupcake with the others before she reached to adjust one of the stars pinned to her head. the dragon looked around, watching as people meandered by, many stopping to pick up cupcakes and a few chatting to her as well, although she got the feeling many of them ended the conversation rather quickly... probably because even though she was being nice, she’d never been particularly good at being social. she smiled as a faerie brought her kid by and they picked a couple, and then looked up. her eyes widened as her gaze landed on a face she hadn’t seen in centuries, staring for a moment as she felt herself begin to panic. she had no idea how he felt about her, although she’d always assumed that her siblings, even viktor, eventually, hated her. their final words to each other certainly hadn’t been kind, on her part especially, having made snide remarks after he’d called her selfish for destroying everything. and he’d been right. she gripped the table in front of her, teeth clamping down on her lip as she contemplating whether to try to interact or simply run. even though she was running the stall on her own and definitely shouldn’t just leave it in case some kid did something like take bites out of all of the cupcakes and put them back...

   “ ...cupcake ? ” she offered eventually, voice slightly shaky as she spoke.

The café was filled with tired students and equally tired professors.

Gigi sits with jerico in a corner right up the Window, the wall like decoration separated them with the people right besides them.

--i know a great tea you could try

--oh please do tell

--its Arab Tea with Cardamom and Cinnamon, youre going to love it

Jerico was a picky eater and equally picky tea drinker.

--sounds good, lets order that

There wasnt really something to talk about.

Jerico hated talking about school.

Gigi hears jer sigh deeply with worry.

--whats up?

The djinn asked.

--its nothing really,im just missing my brother thats all..

He spends so much time going from desert to desert , and a very special holiday is coming up back at my home and I dont want to miss it,its usually celebrated with family and Friends...

--what is he after exactly?he sounds desperate as a djinn without their lamp

The dragon seems to chuckle and looks away--hes after the lamp of his ancestor... he was a djinn too

The tea arrives with some cupcakes to accompany them.

--maybe I can go with you to that holiday-- the djinn said-- you dont have to go alone

Jeri's eyes lit up-- would you go with me?

--Of course! When is it exactly?

--in three days

--do I have to wear anything in specific?

--no no..you dont have to maybe I can come up with something similar to what we wear , how do you feel about terra's style?

--oh, I really like it,the colours are too earthy for me but i gladly wear them for you

And her cheeks went red.

Jerico could only contain her giggles--that means a lot thanks gigi, ill talk with a friend see what I can get for you okay?

--ok --okay

And so evening goes by, the moon slowly makes her way up to the Sky.

--ill see you tomorrow then

--yeah, diesection class?

--Yeah, ill see you around gigi

And then jerico says something in a language she recognizes.

Her cheeks heat up as she also says goodbye and makes her way back to home.

The Next couple of days went by quickly, and finally there they were, gigi looks in the mirror of jericos house,the outfit was a mix of djinn clothing and terran style.

She looked beautiful.

The djinn and the dragon walk side by side in the festival, lively music plays as the old terran women singed and told the tales of old.

Their hands brush togheter and shyly their fingers intertwine.

Both would be lying if they said they dont feel the chemistry between the two of them.

--oh you gotta hear this one

Jer tightens her grip on gigis hand and she runs towards one of the stages that were set up.

An old woman of wich jerico couldnt quite recognize but still seemed familiar started talking.

She was pale and with a long black hair , a scar across her left eye covered by her dark locks.

-- a long time now, there was a faery that lived in a willow tree.

She had hair like Fire, emerald eyes and a beautiful voice.

A young Man heard her singing, and followed the sound towards her.

For Many Many days he tried to court her, but nothing seemed to work.

The young Man, brought down her ancient tree, and took the faery out of her forest.

When she was far away just at the entrance of the Woods she collapsed and faded into a flower, that would Bloom for a bright eve.

The Man...understanding his greed called upon Ray, the god of providence, who made a pact with the goddes of life to bring back the faery and her tree in exchange for her soul.

The soul of the Man was embeded into the old willow,so he could stay with the faery to Keep her company....

This story show us that we dont realize what we have until we lose it,and that love is stronger than the gods themselves ...

Gigi looks at jerico who had her eyes sparkling with ilusion.

The djinn suddenly feels a tug on her stomach,as the dragon goes to get something to eat, she runs as the sensation of familiar magic strenghtens.

Another djinn was close.

She ran and ran until she found him.

Sitting alone in a corner.

--excuse me?

Gigi asked.

A Man looks up, its evident that genie blood coursed through his veins.

The same blood as hers.

--youre a genie too --the Man says -- I suppose youre gigi Grant, jerico told me about you

--jerico?...so youre her brother...her half djinn brother

--Im aajab halba, yeah, I am...have you seen her around?

--yeah actually im with her

--do you mind taking me to her?

--Not at all, this way

And so they walk in silence, not uncomfortable silence but rather familiar one, after all they were genies too.

--so jerico talks about me?what does she say?

Aajab chuckles and crosses his arms-- you havent realized by now?

--re realize what?

--oh come on,you know what im talking about, youre a genie too, you tellin me you dont have a crush on her?

Genies cant lie to eachother...Its too obvious even for them.

-- fine and what about it?

--she has a crush on you too,I know my sister damn well

--oh my Ra!

Jerico runs towards aajab hugging him tightly.

The Man hugs back

A familiar voice says.

Jer steps closer grabbing her hands.

-- no need to, I know terrans value family very high...and its nice to meet someone like me

--Its nice that I have met you

Both chuckle and press their foreheads togheter

--What does that mean?

--its terran for 'I love you'

Gigi is taken back for a bit before pressing her lips against jers.

Jerico hugs her waist holding her close.

--hungry?

Both meet the others gaze, breaking the hug while holding hands.

--yeah ,starving

--Oh let me show you this youre going to love it!

And so off they went to enjoy the festival.

The Cupcake Coterie vs Government

This session was more of a “things that you kind of have to watch” one than anything else - exposition and loose-end-tying combined with a bit of shopping.

So for starters, we brought Clarity (tiefling rogue, @lindira) back in from the Leaf and Legend. In the Bravo’s Boast’s taproom, over a very late dinner, she met one of the Sisters of Sweetwater and Sisters; the tiefling Maeva. After a nice chat, Clarity went up to the room that Mori showed her, and went straight to bed.

The next morning, Darvin (human bard, @fauxfire76) and Froseth (dragonborn monk, @miaaoi) woke up to find their wizard comrade Sigwald already gone. Flitty, their faerie dragon friend, said that Sigwald had gone to the university to give that report he’d been stressing over. When they finally came downstairs, though, they found Hazel’s adoptive sister Andromeda - Andri - who had come to deliver a letter from Sigwald and collect his things. The letter said that he had decided that he was not an adventurer, and had too much to learn at the university ... which might well kick him out if he disappeared on adventures for extended periods. He asked via Andri if Flitty wanted to come with him and be his familiar, but Flitty opted to stay with his friends.

There was breakfast and discussion and it turns out that Andri is a druid; the Academy doesn’t teach druidic magic but she borrows the books at the library there, and other places, to learn what she can. She Beast Shaped into a bear when Hazel (half-elf cleric, @true0neutral) tried to glomp-hug her. She is also apparently sharing a really small apartment with people. She still hasn’t told anyone what she does for a living.

They spoke to Governor Fortinbras, and handed off the letter that Twilly and Miranda wrote. Hazel may have made some disparaging remarks about dragons, referring largely to King Dragon Asshat III at the time ... but not realising that Hial Fortinbras, Governor of Cre-Umha and Belarys its capital, is an ancient bronze dragon. Basically I took Critical Role’s Marquet and dialed it up to 11; instead of just one city being ruled by a dragon, I took an entire country and had each of its five provinces ruled by dragons. Turns out the silver dragon living in the far north, Vieve Alled, is protecting the few remaining silver dragonborn left in the world, as the villages and townships of silver dragonborn that exist throughout the continent at least have been systematically wiped out. She would very much like to speak to Froseth someday.

In any case, all five of the dragon-governors ended up hearing what was going to be happening, because all it took was a mirror-message spell and the words “Tiamat rises” to get their attention. Turns out, though, that Bahamut has some rules about things. Basically, it’s another test of worth thing. They’re going to go wipe out a nest of sea hags hovering a little too close to bronze dragonborn territory, and they will then hear what they need to gather to bring to the Steelsinger of their acquaintance to make Remi (human paladin, @hyperewok1) a dragonslaying weapon of the sort needed to take the black dragon king of Baronsvere down.

They did decide to spend the day getting themselves as geared as their coffers would allow, though. Their first stop before their appointment to meet Andri for lunch and tours was Arcane Ink, the magical tattoo parlour. After long discussion, Darvin decided to get a single-use Tattoo of Blade Ward, with the understanding that they can barter with sea hag bits to make their gold stretch farther later if they want something else. Froseth was gifted by Vieve Alled, via Hial Fortinbras with a three-use Tattoo of Zephyr Strike, because I wanted him to have something spiffy and silver dragon who might well be his ancestor doesn’t want yet another silver dragonborn to die. Darvin had a bit of a flirt with the tiefling working at Arcane Ink, so that was fun.

There will be more (minus Froseth, because @miaaoi has other commitments) in two weeks, but ... seriously, watching Remi put her foot in it was amaaaaaaaazing...

As you may have noticed, some of our hybrids actually have a species title all their own (such as selkies, banshees, varcolacs, etc)  but others only have their combo listed (werewolf/human, vampire/demon, shapeshifter/faery, etc) However, as of now, ALL of our hybrids have official species names! You can check out the updated list below, and in the future, if anyone has any species suggestions, just let us know! Sir John “Ducky” Mallard, level 5 Human Paladin who has sworn the Oath of the Ancients. Son of Duke Mallard, Ducky was sent to the Diamond Hills mercenary guild as a silencing tactic.

Tohmoh the Damarrion, level 5 Human Warlock with Cthulu as a patron. Joined the Diamond Hills mercenary guild as a way to gain power while helping others.

Marrow Hearth, level 4 dhampir Bard, as played by @the-pantsing-panda

Aiyiri, level 4 Khajit Fighter with a two-weapon fighting style, and former assassin

Our returning Companions are:

Fred Perrin, a devotee to the Mallard family who admires Ducky and mostly polishes armor

George Navarro, a more grumbly fellow who washes boots and sharpens swords, and has a fine word to say about being essentially a manservant

The chanting grows louder and louder, filling the characters with dread and unease. They hear only one word in the entire chant that makes sense, the word “Johmbo”. The chanting ends suddenly.

The party waits around for a second. When nothing happens, they investigate to see if anything changed. It’s at this point that they notice the room has five visible, basic iron doors with hook handles. Ducky is drawn to a door directly south. It is the right side of three doors on that wall, with two bookshelves in between. Although he senses evil from the door on the left, his compulsion leads him to investigating the door on the right instead. He can feel a pulsing, and refuses to open it.

Marrow is drawn to the door on the eastern side, which has two doors. He is drawn to the one on the right as well. He opens the door for a quick peek, and sees that it leads to a hallway that cuts South after about five feet. He turns to ask everyone what they should when he sees that Aiyiri, who had been drawn to the door in the middle on the South wall, has actually gone through her door.

The smell of burnt fabric affects her and Ducky, but no one else. Marrow runs after her, cursing under his breath.

Ducky sees them leave and sighs. Tohmoh yells after them that they should wait, so Ducky goes to him. 

Tohmoh: I feel compelled to stay, which is why I’m not sure if we should... but I want to find out why.

He and Ducky investigate and he realizes that the room is one giant, watered down, Soul Binding trap. Tohmoh misreads the purpose of the trap and makes the criticism that it seemed like “sloppy work.” 

Their attention is drawn when they hear a high-pitched scream from the room where Aiyiri and Marrow disappeared.

-- MEANWHILE --

Aiyiri is drawn into the hallway. As she turns a curve, she sees a large room with old furniture haphazardly stacked and placed. There are strategically placed torches to mess with her darkvision, making it hard for her eyes to quickly adjust to the different lights. 

Marrow comes in just behind her. He grabs one of the torches off the wall and sees three plush dolls sitting in the corner, smiling with what appears to be human teeth. He screams and throws the torch at them, activating them and making them scatter.

The Pink plush jumps on his back and stabs him with a knife. Marrow begins to freak out. He pries the doll from his back and stabs it with it’s own knife. He then drops it as it silently screams. 

The Orange plush bursts from the shadows. Marrow raises his leg to stomp him, and it stabs the bottom of his foot. 

The Blue plush tries to leap off a nearby couch and stab Aiyiri, but it catches itself on the couch and falls.

Aiyiri swipes at Blue and misses, so she begins backing up. Marrow meets her halfway, making sure their backs are squarely together. He then reaches over and grabs Aiyiri, lifts her over his shoulder, and makes a run for it. He runs back down the hallway, then sets Aiyiri down as he rests. She runs the rest of the way, asking for help.

Ducky remembers when she didn’t lift a finger to help him against Voess, and decides that she and Marrow look strong enough to handle the problem themselves. She asks Tohmoh, and he decides he needs more information.

As they’re arguing, the Orange plush appears and stabs Marrow in the back. He screams, runs through the door, and slams it shut. He puts his weight against it. As he’s trying to hold it shut, the plushies try to open it, demonstrating amazing strength for cotton and felt. 

Tohmoh tells Marrow to move then sets a bonfire at the foot of the door. Pink leaps over the fire, but is promptly cut in two by Ducky. Illuminated by the bonfire, orange cast mending and recovers full health. He grins at Tohmoh, who watches, curiously. Blue also mends.

Ducky uses a charge on the magic missile ring he pulled from the sorcerer apprentice, but Marrow bumps into him, releasing the spell. Aiyiri stays at the ready, waiting for the dolls to jump the fire again. Tohmoh starts shooting fire bolts at the dolls, decimating the orange one. 

Blue runs back into the room and sounds a gong. Marrow casts unseen servant in the room and it reports that an army of dolls are coming. Marrow panics and drops the bookshelf in front of the doorway, forgetting which way the door opens. It lights on fire, and what few books were on it are not salvageable. Tohmoh reaches over his bonfire to close the door. He accidentally lights himself on fire, making the bonfire disappear.

Ducky decides to shatter the bookshelf and have Tohmoh light the shards on fire. Marrow opens the door and runs to the side. Ducky shatters the bookshelf. Tohmoh misses... the dolls charge. 

Aiyiri slices and dices one of them, Marrow shreds them by casting Cloud of Daggers, and Tohmoh starts setting fires left and right. After defeating all the creatures, they examine the body parts left over. Marrow realizes that the creatures have real baby teeth, and real eyes. This creeps the party out.

They travel through the room, ignoring a side room with a boiling Gelatinous cube in it, and towards a small hallway. Ducky notices a trap but is unable to back up, so he tries to clear it. A duct opens and smacks him in the head. A doll slides out from the duct and bites Aiyiri, infecting her with Hideous Laughter. Tohmoh lights it on fire.

The hallway leads to a sewing room that’s the only normal room in the entire dungeon. The party decides they need a long rest to recover.
