Always thinking about Cucumber's refusal of the call. Specifically in the context of the masculine ideal "Legendary Hero" represents in this context, and how that ties into many other characters' feelings about narrative as well as gender roles. Cucumber, ALSO, regardless of their feelings about their role, wants to help and save people. they want to protect people and they want to protect Almond. Interesting to consider how Pumice ties into that as both the feminine archetype of a magical girl and a hero. And yknow the whole magical girl transformation thing. Much to ponder.

When it comes to the instrument servants in Legato Manor, there are two possibilities:

A: they're just normal instruments that we're taken control of and talking instruments are the norm in Dreamside (boo!! Boring answer!!)

Or

B: they were once normal instruments that are now possessed by the souls of Legato's victims. When the original Legato sealed his soul away in the contact lense, he could've also sealed away their souls inside of the instruments. They could've already been somehow brainwashed by the original Legato to be his servants when Legato was still ruling Organetto, and they were still alive. If this is the case, his reasoning for doing so would most likely be to preserve them for whoever puts on the contact lense in the future (that person being Panpipe).

If you have anything else to add to this please tell me (or if you just have anything to say about count Legato in general because I love him, he's honestly such an interesting and underrated character!!!)

Reading SVSSS: Chapter 9

For those who don't know, I am reading SVSSS for the first time and sharing my thoughts!

eeyyuh ye, how do youpick out the colour palettes for your characters like tomiko or alice? i can never get satisfied with the colour palette while my friends claim they are nice. (i feel like i can't tell whether a colour combination looks good)

Uhhh gonna be real it’s a little bit color symbolism and theory, and a LOT of bullshit and throwing paint at the wall to see what sticks. Again it’s all story based, so color symbolism will depend on story (red might mean evil in one context, but power and strength in another) To me, characters serve the story first and foremost, so color palettes will follow that, or story follows the characters and their colors.

I like assigning a color to a character based on personality (Alice and Tomiko pink, Edith blue, etc etc), and then picking a secondary color that’s close to the primary color on the color wheel, and a highlight color to add interest. (LEARN COLOR THEORY!!! THERE’S PLENTY OF TUTORIALS OUT THERE!!!! I recommend Gigi DG’s color tutorials, and their whole comic Cucumber Quest is a master of color theory) Alice’s secondary color is purple, and her highlight color is cream/peach orange. Tomiko’s palette is the pinks, cream, and very dark purple of her fur, all very warm colors, but then she has the bright blue eyes, an offsetting cool color (then her outfit is related to those colors. Red for Lucky Cats, teal to offset the pink of her fur and match the cool color of her eyes, and peach shorts to match the pink). Edith has a lot of medium blues and navy blues/blacks, and her highlight color is white. All these colors have story meaning attached to them.

But even with the amount of thought, you can still noodle around with different palettes. “Adjust hue/saturation/brightness” can be your best friend. Just select the color you want to adjust and go off tweaking it as you like.

i don't remember if you answered something like this before, but i was wondering: what colors do you usually like to paint/draw with the most? is it because they're fun, they're a favorite color, etc?

i used to use purple so often that my color theory teacher teased me about it. it was kind of my trademark all throughout cucumber quest. i still use a lot of purple and blue in my work, but maybe not quite as much. i wouldn't really say i have a favorite color at all...i like working with all of them depending on the context.

Door Reviews: Soul of Sovereignty Prelude (2023)

There was a time when I was very much into webcomics. Don’t get me wrong, I still am into them in theory, but I have not had energy to read as voraciously as I did before. I haven’t had time to get into new ones either. I am still fond of them, however, and keep up with a couple webcomics.

It is during my webcomics phase that I discovered the works of ggdg. I found myself reading Cucumber Quest and enjoyed it a lot! When the comic went on indefinite hiatus, I kind of lost track of what they were up to, though I have faint memories of reading Lady of the Shard.

Years later, a friend of mine told me about this game. When they linked it, I realized that wait, this is from ggdg! And the memories came flooding back. It made me so excited to play this game. Well, now I have! I’m excited to talk about it :)

What’s it about?

“Soul of Sovereignty is a tale of deadly kindness and selfish virtue in a world of magic and ruin,” says the game’s itch.io page. It is a visual novel about two souls whose fates become intertwined. They go on a journey that will be of more importance than they would expect.

It should be noted that this game is just a prelude to the whole story. Not all of the questions you will find yourself asking will end up being answered here. Also! I’ll just call it SoulSov from this point on because that’s shorter lmao

STYLE (Gameplay, Graphics, Music)

SoulSov is a visual novel. It shows background art with characters in the foreground, displaying text to tell the story itself. As far as gameplay goes, it is pretty simple… but I think ggdg does some subtle things here. The layout, the way the movement of the text flows with the art, there’s a few things that help with the conveyance of the story itself. I don’t really know how common it is in the genre, as I haven’t played enough visual novels, but I appreciate these small things.

The art is beautiful. Downright ethereal at some points even! I loved seeing the old yet homey inn and the snowy woods. I loved seeing these wonderfully designed characters. They look so solid, yet soft at times.

The music, I find, is pretty good and apt. It’s nice and gentle in some places, and intense when it needs to be. The sound design is also good, shifts in the snow can be heard, creaking floorboards, the howling of the wind.

The UI is good. I like how there’s a History tab so that I can easily backtrack when I feel like I missed some words. I also like how there’s a Cast section so I can easily see descriptions of the characters. I like that the Glossary section is an external way to provide more lore to the world.

Overall, I definitely like the style of this game. Beautiful art, wonderful prose, it all combines well and lets me experience a story in a nice way.

SUBSTANCE (Story, Characters, Impact)

I loved the story. I loved how the world unfolded before me, from a cold, sleepy hamlet to a sprawling empire of a city. I loved seeing all the characters, their quirks, how they interacted with each other. Most of all, I loved how the worldbuilding revealed itself. The importance of flowers, the history of certain sites, the pantheon of the world… ggdg discusses just enough to paint a picture but leaves out enough to make me want to know more.

The story takes its time. It wants you to feel the weight of each sentence, to understand each brushstroke of a painting. ggdg makes sure that each click of the mouse moves the story in an efficient and economical way, which makes for a tight story that still expresses itself well.

I have not played much graphic novels, but what I find interesting is how you can “turn the page” so to speak. When I say turn the page, I talk of how certain forms of media dictate the flow of stories. With books, you turn the page. With comics, you go from panel to panel and turn the page. With film, you frame the story with your camera and dictate the very story itself with what you choose to record with it. With games? It’s different with each genre. But for this game, each click of the mouse (or press of the spacebar) turns the page. At some points, turning the page here means it reveals each sentence when you’re ready, showing accompanying art and changes in character sprites. At other points, it reveals each block of text, revealing changes in background and introducing new areas. While describing it this way feels a bit granular, it didn’t feel too slow when I moved through the story. And I think this approach makes the important moments hit better.

Overall, the story fucks. I enjoyed it a lot!

VERDICT

I haven’t played enough graphic novels to judge this as a graphic novel, but as a game I enjoyed SoulSov immensely. The art is great. The story is great. I’m excited to experience more installments of this game and find out more about this world! I am glad to have this game be the first game I finished in 2024. I wholeheartedly recommend it to everyone!

I can identify Rosemaster, and the rest aren’t definite. However, I can attribute some if I reach, BUT LOOK AT THIS!

Is this the disaster master of the Sky Kingdom? I wonder how accurate it is?

Considering the unique dialogue boxes and affect on the art, maybe so.

It could be a combination of those designs?

What if those freaky eye-things were in the clouds they create? Like some sort of eldritch clouds. Or like those clouds are literally part of them.

Alright. Big update and I got an idea.

I've been seeing around that people think the master who was turned into rain was the Sky Kingdom's diaster master. I have reason to believe that it might not be.

You know how the Crystal Kingdom is divided in half? Well, the Melody Kingdom was once divided in half too. That caused Nightmare Knight to give the Melody Kingdom two disaster masters. I think the same thing happened with the Crystal Kingdom. Nightmare Knight gave the Crystal Kingdom two disaster masters, the one in charge of the Winter side of the kingdom surrendered to the heros, then Nightmare Knight turns them into rain.

I could be wrong, but I think it would be odd if the Sky Kingdom hasn't had a diaster master for who knows how many cycles.

i think emotion is very important in cq, specifically fear, and how it relates to The Nightmare Knight. I think a certain connection to Almond can be made in their tendency to be guided by emotion. Not only how their fear and insecurities define them, but how strongly they care about people. they don't want to lose people.
