ahfhghikl thank you so much for all your comments on my meandering rambling post! honestly I dunno how I got from point A to point B without losing track of what I was meaning to say in the first place lol but it all came together in the end so :D

I totally understand you not agreeing 100% with me (and you don't have to! as long as you are being nice to me about our difference in opinions, I don't have a problem!) and I am glad, despite this, you could enjoy the rest of it! If I have to take a wild guess, it must be about Jack where our views differ, and while I am very curious about your thoughts, i would like to hear them after i finish my lacie post bc i wanna write about her (and Jack) from my own first impressions of the story.

Part 2: Ah I understand being frustrated seeing the fandom jumping from one opinion to another with every chapter update (that's the problem with a serially updating manga, with tons of plot twist) and i can't speak for myself what i might have done had i been reading this serially as well. reading this altogether helped me form a more solid opinion about overall events happening in the series. Although I have to confess while reading Past Arc, I saw Oswald more as a victim of circumstances (as in, I sympathized with his depressed state at the time and I solely blamed Jack for taking advantage of his friend like that) but later reading on into the last Arc, I started to hold him responsible for a major part in the Tragedy as well as I explained in that essay.

hmm, it's interesting to me that you feel that way from my writing. I won't say I like him (um, no, I don't think I like him as much as many other characters in the story. In fact, I like Lacie way way more than him) but yeah, I did pity him in the beginning when I thought he was struggling with last minute measures so the world won't come to an end bc of Jack's recklessness. I think the moment I started to.... dislike (i am so conflicted where exactly i stand on the love/hate scale for him) him was when he decided that killing Lacie was the only way to prevent the Tragedy of Sablier. That's just victim blaming at its finest. He already cast Lacie into the Abyss and killed her once. Now, he wants to drag her out out of it and kill her once again? for what? making one (1) friend in her whole life? please.

so yeah, I don't really think I like him, but I did try my best to keep my personal opinions out of this essay and keep it neutral (mostly) so maybe, that's the reason you feel like i like him.

Other than that, thank you for your words: "Even today, I'd say it's perhaps not super extended to find such a nuanced criticism of his character."

"suffering hero to Jack's villain" -> for me, this is not Oswald, but Oz. Oz (and even both Alices) is the ever suffering hero to Jack's villain. Oz never wanted to kill or hurt anybody; he agreed to become a chain for Jack for White Alice's sake. But then, he was forced to commit mass murders and even had to witness his dear Alice commit suicide right before his eyes. Like, it's all so, so, heartbreaking for a doll that got a spark of life and just wanted to do good for his two girls. Even later, when he was in Jack's body, he had to stand by and watch Jack hurt his friends until he, spurred on by Oscar's words, managed to take control of Jack's body. So, if you see Oswald and Jack, I hold his negligence partly responsible for the way Jack turned out. But Oz is a victim through and through.

Part 4: Yes, I agree with all of what you say here! Oswald had the power to end the cycle of trauma by stopping Lacie's execution (if you see Retrace 91/92, he even attacks one of the Juries there. He could have done that at his Succession Ceremony if the Jury tried to intervene in his decision or take away his title of Glen. Moreover, as I understand, there is only one Jury for one story and they are no big fighters or anything.) but in spite of having all the powers of the Abyss, he lacked the strong will to take a huge, game-changing decision and that turned out to be his undoing.

About Alice:

ahhh I am not sure if it is an artistic choice to give Oswald and Alice just enough interactions for us readers to realize that they had been on good terms once,, yet I find it super interesting that Alice has no other memories of him while she has tons of Jack. Like Jack taught her to dance, braid her hair, taught her to play the piano too (I think?) and I don't know whether that memory of Jack and Alice near Lacie's grave and listening to her music is real or manipulated, for Alice iirc was never let out of the castle. so where does that memory come from? Is it Alice's wish that she imagines to be real? On the other hand, White Alice and Glen seem to have had some small interactions after all, bc if you remember Break's teatime with her down in the Abyss, she does mention Glen telling her about chains and stuff and claims to hate him as well. again, with the context of Retrace 76/77, I don't know if I can trust those memories either because her own were already shredded and lost at the point.

And, I was not quite sure the reason she hated Glen anyway. Like, I have seen many different reasons floating around, from her knowing in some way that Glen cast her mother into the Abyss that the other Alice doesn't—to Glen not letting her talk to Jack (?) (uh, I am not sure what this exactly means, but I remember her saying the same to Break as well, I guess it's bc of her broken memories she remembers like that),, it's all very confusing—but.... I think your reason makes the most sense to me. Because, if Glen kept her caged in and didn't let her go out and that's the reason she hated him, then yeah, it makes a lot more sense, why Jack was easily able to sway her to his side with the promise of taking her to the Rose Gardens of Vessalius House.

But, on the whole, yes, I do believe Oswald dropped visiting Alices after Jack took charge of them. Because, artistic choice or not, in such a painful event as Alice witnessing her uncle getting beheaded right in front of her, she must fondly remember and regret all those other memories as well, right? but she still has flashbacks to just that one scene.... so take it as you will.

About Black Alice, it's sad if you think about it. She really loved her uncle, okay? yeah, she might be an idiot for being ok with remaining in a cage among other things, but i think of her as more of a lovable idiot. She loves everything and everyone around her without noticing faults in them. She is that impressionable and good-natured child. She even names her favorite doll after Oswald! In fact, (once again) it's Levi that realizes how Alice likes Oswald the best (and interesting how Levi does spend a lot of time with Alice up until his death in spite of her being a product of his experiments. he has his moments, i guess? lol. and idk if he ever told her that he was her dad. does Oswald know this? or, did he tell only Jack? I mean, like obviously after seeing Alice, Oswald must have realized Lacie had been pregnant when he cast her into the Abyss but does he know Levi is the dad? He might have assumed it's Jack or someone else? idk)

okay, I am rambling now but what I mean to say is Alice really did love her uncle. But Oswald was so drowned by his sorrow and regrets that he didn't open his eyes to what he could still protect, instead spent his days dwelling on what he couldn't. In the end, Alice took her own life.... and, in more than one way, Oswald failed Lacie all over once again. I know for sure, Lacie loved her kids bc she went all the way down into the Abyss to request 'her' to take care of them when they are born and hoped the plush dolls could be friends with them. So yeah. He just keeps hurting her again and again.

ahjfjshgj thank you so much!! about Lacie, I have tons to write about her but i think I hurt my hand a bit, so i am taking a little break from writing so both those essays will have to wait :(( i meant to write an analysis about Lacie separate and about Jack/Lacie (and both topics have soooo much to write idek where to start lol, but i will figure that out. rn, I must worry about my fingers more so yeah a break from fanfics and writing in general is necessary (cuz i can't avoid irl work anw :((( )

and actuaaaaally, I wanna write about Levi too. In spite of his few appearances in the story, I feel like I might have tons to write about him if I reread the series. Such as, he is the sole Plot Starter Flint for the Entire series: it's his experiment that led to the creation of the Will of the Abyss; the only standalone (sorta) arc—Head Hunter's Arc— happened bc of Humpty-Dumpty, the chain that was formed from Levi's body. He has the most fuck-around-and-have-fun energy of all characters, and yet, I think, I think, it might be controversial for this fandom, but I think he is deeper than what comes across. Especially, his expressions in the last few chapters did not.... seem of a person having fun with all this. although he did keep repeating that he was having fun and that's all that matters to him but.... unreliable narrator much? idk. i still hate to the core what he did to Lacie but i wanna know what made him so warped in the first place.

I have never written an analysis on Reim, but if you mean this post, then yeah i did rant about him. I didn't delete it, just took it off the main tag bc it was attracting Unnecessary Attention from the fandom.

(also please don't reblog the linked post, I didn't delete it but I don't want it to attract attention again)

My Opinions on him largely differs from the general Fandom Opinion from what I have seen. To put it simply, his character annoys me. Whatever I wrote in that post, I still stand by—two points as the tip of Iceberg Of My Opinions on him:

1] He didn't trust Break enough to reveal the nature of his Chain to him

2] I am sorry but I can never get behind his excuse for shooting a child as this:

He didn't even try to simply disarm/render her unconscious (like Break did for Zwei); no, he shot her. In the head. With full intent to kill. A child who was chatting merrily with him. A child who told him everything about the Baskervilles. A child who had wholeheartedly accepted him as her friend. In fact, the build up in the panels leading up to his shooting is… ominous, to say the least. Then he closes his eyes and tells himself that he is doing the Right Thing bc, ofc, he is The Good Guy. Nah, I can only see his selfishness here: he wanted to do something Useful for once, bc he is always called weak and useless. He wanted to go back to his people, inform them Baskervilles are here, but "oh, I took care of one of them all by myself." He (and the whole Pandora, for that matter) has this Black and White worldview: Baskervilles: Black: Bad and Pandora: White: Good. In spite of Lily telling him everything about herself, he still doesn't make the slightest attempt to change his view of them. At least, Break didn't have that kind of prejudice; he did "talk" to Lottie as he would to any other 'human enemy'—in the end, he even apologizes for being a jerk to her... and then goes on to being a jerk again lmao

Point no. 1 is..... I don't have words about how much I hate him for withholding such vital information. From Break. Break, of all people, who he knows is always looking out for him, thinks of him as his only friend, might engage in a fight for his sake etc. And then, says shit like this:

What. is. wrong. Xerx. what's. with. that. sad. face. While reading this chapter fresh, I uttered Shut Up at the same time as Break, you know. That's why I believe he was also, for once, really pissed off Reim didn't share something this important. Break would have died. Like D I E D if best boy Gil didn't arrive on the scene on time. Please. Why you look so sad. Go die in a ditch somewhere.

And, I loved Fang, okay? He might be a minor character and all, one that the fandom most likely doesn't care about but... I loved him, for all the small things that were shown to us, he was one of a kind of an honorable gentleman and a true warrior. He genuinely politely talks to his enemies—he even said he was honored to cross blades with a strong fighter like Break. He didn't want to use his chain bc he wanted to fight Break (who was using Mad Hatter anyway) one-on-one like.... what a strong warrior code! Fang died because of Reim, only and only because of him. Not only bc of all what I wrote here, but also—like what was Reim even trying to do by distracting Lily in the heat of the battle? trying to get her killed? Break was poised to kill her and she lets down her guard bc of Reim, that's why Fang couldn't even block his sword.

You know, what's sadder, Lily had no intention to kill him even if he shot her in the head with full intention to kill. See:

Yeah, the only reason he appeared 'dead' to Fang was bc he put himself in hibernation. Had Break known of this, he would have rushed to check on Reim's wounds first, instead of immediately giving him up for dead and jumping in to revenge him.

Eventually Break succumbed to his injuries from this very battle, because, you see:

Break has always passed out bc of his Chain (and he won't die from it) but he was unparalleled in his sword skills. Fang got an advantage on him bc of his underground attacks with his chain. This is the first time Break got injured. The first time Break got injured. With things moving so fast after this, his injury never heals properly; while in captivity, Vincent reopens that wound and finally, Break succumbs to it. I read a couple of meta about how time was never Break's ally that's why his time runs out,,, but I maintain he died bc someone he considered a friend didn't reciprocate his sentiment enough to trust him with vital information and that's what cost him his life in the end. and then, you wonder why he always wants to be a one-man army.

This is just the tip of Iceberg of My Opinions on him. Retrace 93 must be why he is so upheld as a beacon of diplomacy or something in this fandom but sorry to say, my views differ. I think people overlook Lottie's role there. Not everyone might agree with me, and might still credit Reim for doing something that Break already set in motion and Lottie brought to the finish line. All of his "bullet points" were nothing that couldn't have happened 40 chapters ago had he not blindly clung onto his prejudice. And, finally, happens in Retrace 93 with Reim and Lily becoming friends at the cost of one life on either side. Isn't it ironic that this 'friendship' that started off on the wrong foot thwarted the other that was actively pursued by both sides? the things that might have changed if Fang never died? Lottie might even have helped them in some way while Break, Sharon and Shirley were imprisoned. other than this, it might be bc I am already annoyed enough by him but I dislike his overall attitude toward Lily in this chapter. (annnnd if it is true, he proposed to Sharon within a year of Break's death..... well. idk if I can take it canon or it's just a non-canon sidenovel thingie buuut it rubs me in the wrong way for... reasons. or, maybe it's just me. i take those kind of things seriously)

Anyway, jic what you meant by Opinion on Reim was not this, and something in the lines of Good/Nice/Different/What a lovable character he is, isn't he? ^^

But in case, you wanna read more of My Opinions on him, I will have another 50-page rant ready lol; I can never possibly physically sit down and write a neutral unbiased analysis on him. No, I feel so strongly about him that I will always end up ranting. I might even attempt a neutral analysis on Levi, of all people, some day; can't on Reim. Sigh.

either way, i'd rather spend my time writing about characters i love than wasting my time thinking about those i don't. sooo, chances are I won't write anything more about him anyway; but yeah, to put it shortly, I don't have much of an opinion on him.

c!jack is really awesome and i love watching his pov but i don’t actively root for him, and i feel like thats because his motives are just so? misguided? like it isnt tommy’s fault that techno and dream are trigger happy and it isnt tommy’s fault that wilbur’s mental state declined to the point of blowing up lmanburg, or that dream wanted to toy with him and is power hungry, or that techno is an anarchist.

and tommy didn’t sacrifice nations and friends for the discs? in fact he gave up the discs multiple times, like to gain lmanburg’s independence, and when he told tubbo to give dream the disc right before doomsday, dream had both the discs in his possession and still blew up lmanburg.

like obviously tommy is not flawless. jack has valid reasons to dislike tommy! killing jack in the nether during exile and generally dismissing jack as weaker than himself and constantly causing jack to lose everything (intentional or otherwise) are not good things. but i just dont think that warrants jack trying to kill him, especially considering that his other reasons for hating tommy are just not...true?

and all this doesnt mean c!jack is a bad character, in fact i think he’s an amazing character and he’s stuck in a cycle of wanting to get revenge bc he’s been hurt, i just want to be able to cheer for his vengeful acts a little but i just cant bring myself to, yknow?

Got tagged by @ushauz to do Ten Favorite Characters. This post will probably take me a couple sessions to put together, so expect lateness.

As always I am stuck on the scope of the question. Ten favorite! What does that even mean. Ten I thought were the most interesting? The most enjoyable? Characters from comfort series I read a lot, or only read once but really stuck with me? Through the years? Recently? I guess I can just pick the first ten who come to mind.

1. Ista dy Chalion from the Curse of Chalion/Paladin of Souls books. People like to talk a lot about how there should be more middle-aged matron action/adventure/fantasy heroes, well, here’s one. We meet her, at the start of the books, in a very bad place -- she had a stint as a Chosen One god-avatar in her teenage years which absolutely wrecked her life, and she never recovers from it. (Although even in the midst of her Noble Tragedy, she never loses sight of the fact that her nobility does afford her a certain amount of privilege that other women will never have.)

Over the course of the second book she is finally able to move on and recover from it. She starts the book as a crushingly depressed/nervous wreck of a powerless widow, and ends it as a demon-eating sorceress-paladin of a bastard god, with a sexy illegitimate trophy twink on her arm to boot. (I very much doubt that she and Illvin would ever be able to marry, all things considered, but one of the important things she learned -- as a woman whose entire social life had formerly revolved around chastity and propriety -- was to stop letting that bother her.) And she does it all without ever letting you forget that she is a highborn noble lady.

2. Wei Wuxian from The Untamed. Given how much of my mental real estate he’s taking up recently, I surrendered to the inevitable and gave him a spot on the list. I outlined a lot of the reasons I like him so much in this post, but aside from all of that there’s the fact that good (or at least good-hearted) characters who use ‘dark’ powers are magnetically appealing to me.

3, 4, 5. I almost feel like Fai Fluorite (from Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles) Anders (from Dragon Age) and Caleb Widogast (from Critical Role) should all have to share a spot on my list given that they all follow the basic formula of being the Traumatized Cat-Loving Magic Man. It’s not quite that simple -- they all have pretty distinct stories that go in different directions -- but I sort of feel like... I spent 369,149 words explaining why I love Anders, I don’t think I can do it again but tiny.

6. Homura Akemi from Puella Magi Madoka Magica gets a spot on this list, I think, and a spot in my heart. I don’t talk much about the series because I don’t have a lot of original things to say, but I was just reminded of this show recently and how good it was and how good she was -- my brilliant, brave, determinator of a girl with a love as vast as the ocean. And sure, maybe she was willing to burn down the world for the sake of that love, but I sort of feel like that puts her in good company on this list.

7. I’ll go ahead and put Geralt of Rivia (from The Witcher, games and Netflix) on here; I dunno if he’d still make the list 10 years down the line, but I’ve spent a lot of time in 2019-2020 mooning over how great he is, so might as well. He’s not as firmly dead center My Type as some of the others, but he certainly fits the criteria of Unfairly Attractive, Extremely Traumatized, Surprisingly Sassy, and Tragically Good-Hearted. The good-heartedness is key! He could be as pretty and traumatized and witty as he likes but if he were fundamentally an asshole, I would not care about him.

8. Ciaphas Cain (of Warhammer 40k.) In a landscape of published fiction where heroic action characters all tend to follow very similar beats, the debonair, devious and cowardly Ciaphas Cain stands out in a way that really wormed its way into my heart. His books do tend to be a little formulaic, but sometimes that’s just what you need. And the best part about reading the entire series in one go is getting a sense of the shape of the man behind his constant façade of self-deprecation and realizing that as much as he demurs being the brave and kind hero that his misleading reputation paints him as, he is actually pretty damn heroic on his own measures -- he cares about people, even the people under his command who he properly should be thinking of as disposable pawns, he’s way more tolerant of (non-hostile) xenos than 99% of his countrymen, he moves time and time again to block harm and do good in a way that goes beyond his pretty flimsy excuses of ‘well I had to do it to maintain my reputation.’

The main reason he’s so convinced that he’s not a real hero is that he’s been raised in a (lbr, openly fascist) empire so steeped in propaganda of glory and sacrifice that is literally impossible to live up to (since the number one tenet is dying gloriously for the Emperor.) He led an entire caravan of people from the heart of bombed-out, occupied territory in a refugee march that ended up liberating the entire damn planet, he did that, and while he would never have survived without a healthy dose of luck it was still his leadership and skill that took full advantage of that luck. The Imperium of Man, frankly, doesn’t deserve Ciaphas Cain.

9. Raoden and Kaladin (of Elantris and The Stormlight Archives) both share a slot as Brandon Sanderson protagonists who occupy pretty much the same narrative role: they have lost everything, been socially and physically rejected pretty much down to the dust, tossed into a role of waiting for death to come for them in a variety of cruel forms; and instead of giving in to despair they both say no. they both say, I do not accept this for me, and I will not accept this for them either, and they both gather fellow outcasts around them and build themselves a kingdom out of mud and scraps. Yeah, it’s a trope he uses a lot, but it’s a trope I like. (And, come to think of it, a category that Wei Wuxian and Ciaphas Cain both fall under as well. Hm.)

10. Skywise (of Elfquest.) Honestly, at this late date I doubt I could muster an essay explaining why he is the Best Elf. All I can tell you was that this series was super duper important to me when I was a teen, and he was my favorite character from that series. He loved to explore, he loved new knowledge and the sky and the stars, and he loved his friends and family a whole lot.

cloudtail’s daughter: jayfeather

alright, strap in, it's time for jayfeather. i've been holding it in on him for what feels like forever now; he's ya boy's favorite character

also, aside from dove and ivy, he's the character with the highest volume of changes to canon. even above cloudtail and brightheart, because they continue their lives, it's not a big deal. and lion and cinder go to the tribe, but like, that's it. (i'm figuring out if jay goes with them over the course of this essay. i think i said he did in holly? but he literally hasn't been mentioned once in that arc because there's a lot going on.) anyway lion and cinder don't get up to anything. but jay's priorities shift and we see that in his books. i'm really excited to write him but i need to finish arc 1 lmao.

but first, same deal as always. this is part of my cloudtail's daughter au, where dovekit and ivykit are born to cloudtail and brightheart. i don't know how well this will read preemptively, but i suspect it will be rather dependent on the others. cloudtail's daughter: dovewing and/or the long post that explains it are both good places to start, see the cloudtail's daughter tag on my blog.

section one: the leafpool business

at the beginning of this series, leafpool and jayfeather are on bad terms. they will stay on bad terms for basically the entirity of the book series. while one of my main complaints with po3/oots is the lack of acknowledgement of adoption, jayfeather has been lied to by his mother and his mentor, something neither hollyleaf or lionblaze have to contend with, and then his sister kills herself over it. obviously she doesn't, but from his perspective. so he blames leafpool because he was really close to hollyleaf and now she's gone, and it's his first real loss, and there's so much going on.

and so he's a grouch and he's unhappy and he's just trying to function when his whole support system has been dismantled over the course of what, like, a quarter moon? yeah so dovekit and ivykit are like "wow what a grouch he sucks" the same way they don't realize prey is dying of thirst & etc.

for the most part he's j chilling and then hollyleaf comes back and man is it some family drama. unfortunately it's postponed til book 4 because hollyleaf and jayfeather have journeys but anyway i'm getting ahead of myself, because this section should end and unlike the hollyleaf essay i want to actually have decent organization.

section two: hollyleaf is away (but jayfeather doesn't get to play)

holly, cinder, and dove go to deal with beavers. we only get jayfeather through lionblaze in the books, but jayfeather is...conflicted. he got his sister back and lost her again and oh i should say. i think jayfeather and hollyleaf are the closer pair of the siblings. not that they don't love lionblaze the same, but you know how cats pair bond? like, it's usually a trauma thing, but even in feral cats, you see very close friendships. anyway yeah so for other au's i've been sorting siblings n denmates into pairs for this purpose (mostly jaywing au because there's a lot re. dovepaw and jaypaw and remember they are reincarnated siblings they've got a close bond going.) and it's kind of...i don't know my point is jayfeather misses his sister because she's like, his best friend too. or she was. and then she died and now she's back and she left again, and lionblaze is more concerned about cinderheart, so jayfeather just comes off as grouchy all the time. but really he's lonely and sad.

so yeah, jayfeather is kind of moping around camp and then the tree falls and whoops now briarpaw/light is parapalegic.

and uhh this goes more or less as in canon but we don't get pov which is fine bc u can sub in canon. but jayfeather? he's still a sad boy but now he's a sad boy with purpose and that makes all the difference

yeah he's close with her. they're sweet. it's sweet. he's pressured by brambleclaw to take an apprentice. he's bristly and angry and "you're not my real father" you know?

beaver crew gets back. jayfeather, who had missed holly, is back to being angry for...angst and plot purpose, really.

but you know, when you love & miss someone and they leave and they come back and somehow that's worse because now they can leave you again? and you can't tell them you want them to stay because you're angry and hurt but you want them to stay? god i'm excited to write these chapters i love emotional turmoil.

he's protective of briarlight, he's trying to keep dovepaw from being a medicine cat, hollyleaf is apologizing but he's not ready to hear it and lionblaze and hollyleaf are beginning to reconnect and it feels like betrayal. so when cinderheart and lionblaze go to the tribe, he tags along. everyone, uh, strongly encourages he go. he is the big grouch.

section three: time travelling times

okay so the timeline for these books is...messy. if you track the chronology of my writing, it's messy. which is to say, i was thinking i could put forgotten warrior and distant whispers over the same time span, but that actually doesn't work, as i review my notes for FW because a big part of it is ivy and holly's relationship. so. fake news. whoops. that sucks.

or maybe it doesn't? idk i don't usually tell linear stories. i like messing with emotional impact of events. so writing 600k of very linear story telling is very not easy for me. but i'm trying.

right so basically the official order of events until i change my mind again is as follows (names abbreviated as DIHLJC because they're all unique): DCH returns from beavers, DILCJ go to tribe with some other random warrior undecided, J + rando return, JH start awkwardness (beginning of TFW, middle of DW), DILC return (end of DW), time travel stuff (middle to end of TFW). hopefully that was intelligble, but it is admittedly 85% for my own benefit.

alright so we've covered during beavers, now jayfeather and hmmmm let's say, uhhhh, let's say they go with, literally any interesting background character, uh, bumblestripe! he doesn't do anything in this au bumblestripe goes with them. also since his name starts w b i can still write DIHLJCB and have things be unambigious. and it means there are fewer bs in thunderclan and trust me you don't know how frustrating the existence of like 6 b characters is.

alright so we really have 3 sets of two pairs of cats here. maybe i won't go w bumblestripe, bc he doesn't have an existing relationship w jayfeather. i dunno. i'm a big fan of jay & briar, whether as a ship or just besties, but that's just out, and hollyleaf can't come a) because i said so and b) honestly maybe she can? actually wait hold on that solves my problems. hot damn so 6/6 of the pov cats go to the tribe and this will be one of the only times all six characters are plot relevant at the same time. but i'm going george r r martin on it and seperating the books not by time but into DICL + JH because they're two completely separate character arcs that happen to take place at the same time. (don't worry i'm going to resolve the fallen leaves thing. in this essay ig bc i've already covered hollyleaf.)

okay so yeah hollyleaf is sent bc jayfeather isn't planning on staying w tribe for long time. just short time. and he's all "firestar why"

"well jayfeather," firestar says, "you don't talk to your family."

"i talk to dovewing," jayfeather says

"you're not related to her," firestar says

"there's a whole prophecy about how i'm related to her," jayfeather says

"you know about that?" firestar says

and that's how the cat gets out of the bag.

so anyway. jayfeather and hollyleaf are sent because...hold on, spinning the wheel of reasons for a character to go on a field trip...because...because...because...because...jayfeather had one of those dreams. i don't know. rock or something. now he's going.

they get there, and this is where the books get a lil time wonky, bc jayfeather and hollyleaf stay for like a moon, during which jayfeather goes back in time. i think.

i haven't worked out the details and probably won't until i do an updated au synopsis because it's hard to keep track and i'm more concerned about character through lines. like, jayfeather does this and he feels sad, and hollyleaf is sad about her ghost boyfriend, and they're travelling back together, and hollyleaf is his sister and she doesn't make him feel like he needs protection and lionblaze is bad at that, and they start to talk again.

and yeah, they bond. again. it's kind of, on top of their old bond? like they don't repair anything, they bond like strangers. but it's not nothing, and that matters.

so jayfeather gets back, and we're moving into book five, and i don't remember when the last time i made a section break was or what number we're on, so...sorry.

section ???: old man yells at cloud

alright it's finally jayfeather's moment. you know, he's one of my favorite characters, and he only gets a book and a half. "but mateo," i hear you saying, "doesn't every character get a book and a half? and more importantly, 6x1.5 is 9, so how does every character get a book and a half?" well, yes, every character does, but dovewing and ivypool are relevant in books 1-3 and 6, cinderheart in 1-3 and 5, lionblaze in 1-3, and hollyleaf in 2-5 (and has a critical role in 1 and 6, just no character development), while jayfeather is just really essential to books 4-5, and has a background role in 3. that means he's about equal to lionblaze. he's equal to lionblaze. as far as the numbers go, i cannot tell you. it's a mystery.

right so the reason for this is because (a) jayfeather doesn't do that much in oots. i love him, but he's not, like, super important, and (b) he's going to work better in these books if he's concentrated. because his big theme is his relationship with hollyleaf and the past. they're both kind of stuck in it but in different ways. and that prevents them from ever properly healing. so jay never has a full arc in this. i mean he has a full arc, it's just not a satisfying one. and that means he's sort of got to be put in the containment units.

so anyway, he gets his real big moments in the fifth book, when he's reuniting starclan. i think this is one of the riskier decisions on my part: we'll see whether or not i can deliver on him the way i plan to. but i think i can pull it off so that his arc is more meaningful condensed as such.

right. so. jayfeather is decided. he is going to fix starclan. because dead cats need to get thier shit together and he dgaf.

he spends a decent amount of time arguing with yellowfang and bluestar, because basically no important cats have died. at least we're in omen of the stars so it still makes sense? i have no idea why yellow/blue are still so important. please kill more important cats. it makes us feel things.

but feathertail is also probably going to be involved, i don't know. i haven't read these books (specifically, books 4 and 5 of oots) in forever so i don't really remember what happens. but he's kind of, super done with everything. i think he'll probably try to get the support of mothwing and kestrelflight (which is canon i believe?) and try to work as a team. i feel like there's weirdness w shadowclan too i should sort out.

so yeah, there's some medicine cat bonding, everything is OK, sol is happening? but cinderheart is dealing with that. jayfeather is naturally very upset about disconnects with sol but like he's also dealing with stuff i...i really need to reread outcast and sign of the moon. well, they're on my list after "all of these fucking riverclan novels like why they don't show up in the main series but i still have to read a bunch to be able to write them that's not fair."

alright, well, with that very vague description of what happens, moving on, the prophecy gets revealed to the clans at a whole in like...the ending eighth of this book. trying to maximise the amount of exposure to other clans without messing with the pacing.

so jayfeather and undecided warrior B (definitively not hollyleaf) go to windclan. jayfeather is...very unhappy about this. he does not want to leave. thunderclan is his home, and he's blind, and it's really hard to adapt to a new space and he thinks everyone is going to treeat him badly.

and well, if you've read my culture posts, windclan is....very pro-medicine cats and pro-prophecy cats. funerals. mourning. prayer. is probably the best place to start, but to get to the meat of it, start with general clan culture. to summarize, windclan: religious. but kind of like catholics, they don't believe in an individual connection with starclan. only leaders, and medicine cats, and very rarely members of prophecies have a connection. so. jayfeather. he's twice over. that's very cool to windclan.

so cats are kind of falling over themselves to help him, and like. i mean jayfeather is a grouch and he hates that he needs someone to help him through the territory, but at least they don't treat it like a chore, or like he's pitiable. this is a desirable task. apprentices want to know about his powers. and kestrelflight is a respected part of the clan, arguably more important than onestar, and jayfeather has never really gotten over being shoved in the healer hole as a child like it was lesser or easier to be a medicine cat, and so it's a big change.

and yeah. so i mean. an unobservant reader might say jayfeather has sufficient ego. he does not need stroking. they, of course, would be wrong.

jayfeather has a complex, but it's not an ego issue. he's...he's been denied everything he's wanted, and he's jaded, and weary, and he's never really believed that his clan views him as able and equal. in canon, at present, he's lost almost every cat he's every cared about. alderheart is his strongest remaining tie, and his fear at losing him, but willingness to let him leave, is very telling.

so yeah, jayfeather enjoys being accepted. anyone would. he doesn't really have confidence issues, but....argh. i know why this is good i swear it'll come out in the writing.

anyway, that's...that's pretty much it. jayfeather? done.

Hi Linda :) I’m here for some advice, I could’ve just send you a dm and reveal myself but then I thought that maybe others can take advantage from your answer. I don’t know why I’m asking you, it’s just that you seem such a nice and smart person and I trust you? Anyway, I’ve been wanting to write for some time but I’m afraid.. I don’t know where to start and I suffer from anxiety, I’m afraid I will get anxious over hits and comments. What do I need to do? Hope you don’t mind, thank you ☺️

Hi! First, I don’t have enough words to explain how flattered and honoured I am, I’m just not over the fact that you choose me of all people to help you out. And I understand why you went on anon, I respect that, but I wanted you to know that whenever you need help my ask box and chat are always open. That said, let’s jump into the sadness.

Sadness because to be honest, the moment I read this ask, I was both overwhelmed and sad. I just kept asking myself: “why would someone be afraid of writing?” It just doesn’t feel right that a person has to feel like that. But at the same time I know where you get this fear from, I’ll come back to it later.

Where to start? Well, writing doesn’t exactly have a rule for that. I mean, I started writing about 16 years ago (omg that’s very long time) and it just... happened. I’ve always had my head filled with random stories, so I just started writing them down. Now, I speak for myself, if I have an idea I can’t just take my computer and start writing like that. I love plotting, it’s my favourite part, so I write my characters’ personalities, curiosities, random things like their favourite colour or music taste or just aspects of their characterisation. Sometimes even lines and random dialogues. I create them, I create the world around them so I have a full view of what my story will be. Then I start writing, I just let my thoughts flow through my immagination and try to stick to my main plot. Obviously once you get into it, things might change, I did sometimes change the plot while writing bc it’s just how it goes. So my main advice for that, if you have inspiration for a story or for just one character, create a world around it. Start viewing a story in your head, then the writing itself will be easier than you expect! For example, I’m currently writing a Band of Brothers fic with a female OC: I’d never imagined to write a long fic with an OC, but one day I was reading about a woman who was a hero in WWII, and she used to parachute into enemy territory... so my head connected her to the tv show and that’s how she was born. And from that, from just her, I create a whole story. It also happened sometimes that I had in mind a fantasy world (I’m very much into fantasy, my stories are basically just that haha bc you have no limits in creating that, it’s not that you have to do research - even tho I do like research, but it takes more time and energy), and from that I created characters and laws and entire countries... writing is this, is creating things, and there’s no way someone can teach you that. You can get some advice - like the ones I just gave you - but no one can tell you how to do that. You can take inspiration from everything and everyone, for me personally I get inspired from random people I see on the street. My final advice is: just go for that. If you have an idea, or a character in mind, create a background and go for it.

About the anxiety due to views and comments... well, that’s another story. But if you like writing and creating contents, you first and foremost are doing it FOR YOU AND ONLY YOU. Don’t write just because other people do. I know the feeling of being proud of something and then when you post it it gets zero response, or barely a few. If you think about fanfictions, that also depends a lot on the fandom. Back in the day, when I used to write a fic every two days (sob, those were good days!), I was part of a few fandoms; for example when I used to post in the Harry Potter section I usually got loads of views and comments, same with Merlin and Glee. Because they were popular back then. But when I would write a fanfiction about Chronicles of Narnia or Lost, they barely had 2 views per day. And it was always me, like, Linda’s writing. Only thing different was the fandom. Obviously if someone loves your writing but their not into the same fandoms as yours, they happen to read your stories no matter what. Others don’t do that, and I don’t blame them bc sometimes I don’t do that either.

So, basically, you just have to get used to it and not let it ruin your creativity. Believe me, I know how it feels; I stopped some long fics just because I didn’t have enough appreciation and I learned just after that that it was wrong. Because again, you write for you. For example (sorry for so many examples but I find them useful), when I introduced my fic Hélène here on tumblr I got so many enthusiastic messages and 61 notes on the post, so in my head I was expecting at least 100 views the first day! Why? Dunno, I just did. The first day I posted my fic had barely 50 views, but it didn’t upset me bc I’m passionate about writing and especially about this story I’m just creating, that I won’t let a few views and votes let me down. It takes time to realise that, it really does, but trust me when I say it works eventually. It also depends on the website you will rely on. If you post on tumblr you have people reblogging and so your post reaches other people and so on. With Wattpad or Ao3 or Fanfiction Net or whatever, it’s just a matter of luck and honestly how you present your story: the title, the tags, the warnings, the summary...! Also, I learned that here on tumblr time zone does half the work. If I post in the morning no one sees, if I post from middle afternoon/night I get quite enough views! It might sound stupid, but it’s just how social media works haha same when I post on Instagram.

But I’m gonna say this: VIEWS DON’T DEFINE YOUR WORK.

To sum it up: you have an idea? Perfect, that’s your start. You upload a fanfiction and it doesn’t get the appreciation you expected? Don’t stress about it, if you keep stressing about it you won’t write anymore. I don’t know in which fandom you’re currently swimming, but in the BoB fandom I swear to you that everybody is so nice and supportive! I didn’t expect that at first, I was so surprised and in awe and I just love being here and share things with y’all. If you’re new to the writing obviously it takes time before people get to know you and your works, so just bear with that! And for the comments, I personally love leaving comments, because I like the feeling when I get them and so I want other people feel like that. I love critics as well, as long as they have a purpose, bc most of the time they help me as a person and as a writer. Remember: if someone takes the time to help you out, it means a lot.

Well, sorry for this never ending essay, I hope it’ll help you somehow! I’m not used to people trusting me like this, so I hope I made sense! Please know that whenever you need something I’m here for you always.

Thoughts on The Moon Video

Hey guysss I dunno how many of my followers actually check out my text posts like these but I just watched The Moon Video and have some thoughts. Not necessarily theories, not necessarily criticisms, just... thoughts.

What’s most interesting to me is that the video isn’t set up how I thought it would be. Most of the time, when someone on Youtube (or even on here) is introducing new ideas/theories to a fandom, they do it in an essay format. I’m sure we’ve all come across plenty of video essays, and I very much thought that’s what was going on here. But it’s.... not. It’s not a video essay. As far as I’m aware, there wasn’t even any commentary at all. Which goes into my next thought:

The video opened my mind and then didn’t put anything in it. The video is a conversation starter. From what I could tell (I didn’t have captions on or anything, I don’t know if there was extra commentary somewhere) there was absolutely no insertion of opinion or conclusions drawn. I described it in a liveblog to my friends as my brain feeling like “an open sunroof on a moving car.” The most information we get is from the titles of each segment, as well as the order in which the clips are presented. But other than that the whole thing is entirely objective. The only fan theory it even proposes is the “Fjord is Goku” one, which from what I understand wasn’t the original idea of the poster, but was the headcanon of the man who asked the question at the panel.

Speaking of, does anyone have more evidence on that? I’m going to go look in the tags later to see if I can find more arguments for it but I went from 0 to 65% convinced. Pointing out Travis’s love of Dragon Ball is the most convincing thing for me (I’ve never seen Dragon Ball so I wouldn’t have made that connection myself), along with Matt’s descriptions of falling. One thing I didn’t see OP mention to support it was the “power words” Ukotoa was using in Fjord’s initial dreams. Obviously the ones we all remember are “Consume” and “Reward”. But iirc, the “consume” dream (and ones before that, if there were any we saw) was heavily implying that Fjord could only please Ukotoa by slaughtering in his name, similarly to what Yasha did as Orphanmaker. Obviously Ukotoa would want this for his own gain, but it would fit right into Fjord being sent to destroy the world, especially in an age of the rising of the personification of Chaos. But yeah by the time I was starting to get on the bandwagon and wanted to see more evidence the segment was over so that was kind of disappointing.

Again, aside from that ^ theory, there really aren’t any that the video presents? It just gives you the information and people are drawing their own conclusions. Which is great!!! It’s fucking phenomenal! But it’s far from what I expected nor am used to in fandom. Information being presented objectively, without comment??? Unheard of. I’m still barely able to comprehend the idea.

That being said, some of yall were obviously paying more attention than I was because I never put together any of the “Rudinis IS the Luxon” shit. I just knew things like metals were falling from the sky and assumed this whole video was just a buildup to the Fjord theory.

My own theory about what Rudinis is: a portal

Again, take this with a grain of salt because I clearly wasn’t paying enough attention. But portals have already been a pretty major obstacle that the M9 are having to face, especially in the context of the BBEG (which I’m assuming is going to be Tharizdun). As in, portals have been behind basically everything so far. And while, yes, Rudinis being the body of a dead god or something is fucking awesome, it just seems unlikely given what’s been supposedly falling from it?? I know that metals and shit being organic material isn’t out of the realm of possibility for a god, but if you tie in everything thats fallen AND the Fjord theory, then that’s an awful lot of random shit to come from one organic creature. You know what else is random though? Portals. Anything can fall through a portal. Metal, beacons, whole ass alien babies, other gods. In fact, if you do wanna tie in the Fjord theory, then how many times in media have we discovered that our hero was an alien who fell/was sent through a portal down onto our world? Off the top of my head I can think of Doctor Who, She-Ra & the Princesses of Power, Dragon Ball Z, Megamind, Superman. I’m honestly a little sick of it but the trope is already there to fit in with that theory, and again, it allows for way more diversity than Rudinis just being a decaying body.

The mental image of level 20 Caduceus decaying away the fucking moon tho??? Sick as hell

Anyway yeah I think that might be all you have to say. It’s a really interesting video and it’s starting up really good conversations but it’s not necessarily as enlightening as people are making it out to be? At least to me. I’m so used to getting presented with opinions that an hour’s worth of pure information is like. Unsettling.

What do you think are some of your biggest flaws/shortcomings as a writer? Like what are things that you're trying to improve upon for yourself or what things do you try to seek out advice from others about? Just curious :)

I mean, I don’t really seek advice because I don’t have anyone to seek advice from. I look to works of writing that I respect and attempt to mimic those things, but–and this is going to sound arrogant and conceited and that’s fine I guess–I’ve never been in a situation where my peers have been on the same level I am. That isn’t to say I’m the best writer in the world, because I’m not, but literally I’ve never been in a place where my peers and even teachers have anything to offer me in the way of helpful criticism. More often than not, I am leaned upon to be one of the few people that are able to edit and critique someone else’s work and actually be useful.

When I would submit stories for review, my profs would either, one, give me 100%s, which is silly because I did not deserve that, or tell me they have nothing to say because it’s “so good.” And if I sound irritated by this attitude, I am. I have grad students telling me my work is so good they can’t give me critique, yet my advisor won’t let me take graduate level classes despite the fact that I am utterly wasted with my peers, who do little more than write stories for class because they’re required and not because they bother to practice their craft everyday. And they consider themselves “writers.”

So no, I very rarely seek out advice because it has been a very useless endeavor a good majority of the time.

It has, however, taught me to be very self-reflective and progressive in my own attempts to learn and improve. I go out of my way to improve myself when I feel I am lacking, which is something a lot of writers apparently don’t do? I mean, if I were to be honestly critical, I’d tell you that everything I do is sub-par, because I know from experience that if I work hard enough, I can always come up with something better. I go in to edit a piece having already accepted that I could likely re-write the entire thing and it’d be done better, but only the fact that I can’t do that my whole life and hope to be successful stops me from doing so.

As far as specifics? It depends on the piece and what my focus is, really. Writing isn’t so much a game of what is best so much as it is picking what’s best for the story you’re trying to tell. My aptitude for writing overly emotional scenes might be well-suited to a story about relationships, but is only going to drag in a fantasy adventure story, where each scenes needs to serve as something to pull the story forward. Part of the mark of a good writer is being able to utilize different strategies for different scenes. It’s why my writing style will vary vastly from a romantic scene to an action scene. This isn’t a fault, it’s a purposeful change in tone.

But I’m not here to give advice, despite how I am used to doing so. As far as technical things I know I can improve on, I tend to put too many tags in dialogue, which I have been working on remedying for the last year or more. I also tend to focus far too much on eyebrows and facial expressions, which is a hold-over fanfiction habit that I am ruthlessly trying to break myself of, because me saying a character looks curious does not then require me to tell you how furrowed their eyebrows are–if a character looks curious, most people are more than capable of imagining what that looks like. I also tend to have too many one-sentence paragraphs, which harken back to my fondness for emotional melodrama. I’ve also gotten really lazy about describing locations, which is another bad habit picked up in fanfiction, as it is rare that description is required at all in fanfic. But it makes me all the more proud when I do a description of a place that I really enjoy reading, because it reminds me how much it can add to a story. What other annoying things do I do? I have a few words that I repeat too often, but every writer goes through that and there will always be words I get into the habit of using that I then have to break myself of, only for others to take their place anew. That’s what editing is for I guess. What else do I do? I dunno, there are a lot of things I do that are shitty. I’m sure there are plenty more.

But I get the feeling you’re looking for something more… vast? Like me coming in and saying, oh I’m bad at dialogue, or romance, or character building. But I don’t think I’m really very bad at any of that, as I work very hard to make sure that I’m not butchering any concept I’m going to write about? Like, if I’m writing a romance, I go out of my way to make sure that romance is well-executed by looking at examples of what good romance looks like. Like, I do research and seek out sources and references. And I also practice a lot. And I’m a boss at dialogue when I get my tagging reeled in, so that one is a moot point ;D

I mean, maybe I’m a bit long-winded? But… I like reading long things, so I guess that fault is up for debate and varies from person to person. I think maybe I get a little repetitive in concept–as in repeating the same things every couple of chapters because I’m afraid the reader won’t remember. So I guess I do ask about that, as I will ask my family when they read my novel to tell me if there are certain ideas that get repeated too often or if they need those reminders. But that’s still up in the air so… *shrugs*

I… am really bad at introducing minor character appropriately, which I again blame on fanfiction. And by minor characters, I mean things like pets. When you write fanfic, you can introduce these characters without explanation, which means I now have horses in my novel that go through half of it with no names and then suddenly they have names and I have not figured out an appropriate time to introduce their name formally into the narrative.

A lot of the issues I guess I’m working on stem from separating fanfic practices from writing original pieces. Fanfic has it’s positives, don’t get me wrong. I could write essays on the benefits of fanfic. But it does have a few quirks specific to its form that I now have to combat, hence my uncertainty about whether I’m elaborating on an idea too repetitively or not. In fanfic, that’s not an issue you normally have to deal with, as the writer is usually dealing with themes already apparent in the canon.

I guess fanfic is my biggest weakness. At least as far as writing original stuff, lol. Funny though, it doesn’t work the other way around. I tackle writing fanfic the way I do original work and I get twice as much praise. Which basically tells me that fanfic shortcomings boil down to laziness the community has just… accepted.

I’m lazy. My writing has become lazy. Almost all my fanfic is lazy, even Serendipitous Fate to a certain extent. You’d probably all be shocked to read my original novel and all the detail and precision that comes with it, lol.

The last thing Daisy expected on a Wednesday night was for Jemma Simmons to show up at her door, wasted and missing her tie.

Daisy notices that first. Jemma always wears a tie, had one on this afternoon when they were in class together. A cute plaid design that went with her raspberry-colored sweater. And now it’s inexplicably gone.

Daisy is so surprised to see her, looking nauseous and dazed, that she simply stands in the doorway of her dorm room, eyebrows raised, mouth open, for a good long minute. “Uhhh,” the taller brunette eventually says, observing the rest of Jemma’s attire. She’s still wearing pants, Daisy notes. “What happened to you, Hermione?”

Despite her clearly intoxicated state, Jemma groans at the nickname. “Shut up. Can I come in?”

“Sure.” Daisy doesn’t hesitate. She steps aside, allowing the scientist to enter. Jemma stumbles to Daisy’s desk chair as Daisy closes the door, giving them privacy. She folds her arms and stands in front of Jemma, eyeing her critically. “Are you drunk?”

“Drunk I’m not,” Jemma slurs, elbows on her knees, face in her hands. “Bit queasy, that’s all.”

“Right,” Daisy responds bluntly, moving to grab the wastebin by her desk. She places it near Jemma, just in case.

“I feel terrible,” Jemma whines a moment later, grabbing the can and hoisting it onto her lap. Daisy has to suppress a laugh since it looks rather funny, this tiny, generally orthodox girl clutching a garbage can for dear life.

“How much did you have to drink?” Daisy sighs, reaching out to brush Jemma’s hair off her clammy face.

“Dunno,” Jemma mutters, shrugging. “Two, three…maybe five.” She hiccups. “No, four an’ a half.”

“Christ, Simmons.” Daisy pinches the bridge of her nose. “Honey, why on earth were you drinking? It’s not even Friday.”

Jemma’s face crumples and Daisy regrets how harsh that sounded. Apparently Jemma is a sensitive drunk. “Daisy, I have so much fucking work to do,” she tells her hoarsely, and Daisy actually jumps, taken aback. “I needed a break, okay? I have too much on my plate an’ it was making me anxious so I went an’ had a few beers.”

“Why didn’t you text me?” Daisy murmurs, a tad miffed. “We could’ve been drinking buddies. Keep each other in check.”

Jemma gives her the nastiest look. She puts both her palms up apologetically.

Jemma falls silent after that, focused on not throwing up even though Daisy wouldn’t really mind. Daisy sighs and runs her fingers through her hair, suddenly realizing how tired she is. It’s quarter to eleven and she usually tries to be in bed by now, but her own homework kept her up late. Today, she’s sort of glad it did.

Once another wave of nausea passes, Jemma sets the wastebin back down and fixes Daisy with a morose look. “I’m sorry,” says the smaller woman, fiddling with her hands in her lap. “I hope I didn’t ruin your evening.”

Daisy smiles softly and shakes her head, gesturing to the amount of work she has left. “Nothing much to ruin.”

Jemma gazes at her desktop like she’s seeing it for the first time. “Ugh,” is all she has to say.

She’s definitely drunk, Daisy thinks affectionately. Sober Jemma would be all over this. “Um, hey,” she says out loud, grabbing Jemma’s attention again. “Why don’t you, uh…stay here for a bit,” she suggests, hoping Jemma can’t detect her reddening cheeks. “You rest while I finish my essay. I can take you back to your dorm later when I’m done.”

“Oh, no, you don’t have to do that,” Jemma quickly objects, waving a hand dismissively and trying to stand to prove her point. But she wobbles and Daisy hurries to catch her before the poor girl faceplants onto the carpet.

“I gotcha,” Daisy assures her, and Jemma unintentionally leans her head on Daisy’s chest. There’s a brief moment where they freeze like that, Daisy’s arms curled borderline protectively around Jemma’s torso, Jemma holding on weakly to Daisy’s shoulders. Daisy’s heart does a funny little skippy thing and Jemma is overwhelmed by the familiar scent clinging to Daisy’s fluffy sweater.

So, maybe there’s something they need to discuss. Not right now, though. Now definitely isn’t the right time.

I really wish I was drunk, too, Daisy thinks vaguely as she snaps back to herself then returns Jemma to the chair, face even pinker.

Jemma’s eyes are glassy and she looks sad. Daisy tries not to think too hard about that.

“Yeah, uh—you’re staying here,” Daisy affirms, squeezing Jemma’s shoulders.

Jemma nods mutely, not up for arguing. She just wants Daisy to hold her again. How does she ask without it sounding desperate?

There’s an awkward silence that doubles into a tense pause that makes Daisy herself feel sick. “Um,” she says, just to fill the silence with something. “You, uh…you need anything? Water? Tylenol?”

Jemma scoffs. “I can’t mix alcohol and Tylenol, silly,” she criticizes. “Water would be nice, though. Please.”

Daisy hurries to the bathroom to pour Jemma a cup, and Jemma thanks her softly when she takes it from her hands. Their fingers touch and Daisy gets that fluttery sensation in her chest again. Knock it off, she scolds herself.

Jemma downs the water in one big gulp. A rookie mistake. She retches into the basket not ten seconds later.

Daisy holds her hair back and pats her shoulder, knowing exactly how she’s feeling.

Once Jemma gets it all out of her system, she apologizes tearfully to Daisy—again—but Daisy shushes her gently, pressing a kiss to her temple. “Don’t be sorry,” she whispers. “It’s alright. Been there, done that.”

Jemma laughs croakily. The sound is adorable. Daisy’s heart melts.

Daisy helps Jemma wash up and lets her borrow a pair of sweatpants and a hoodie. Daisy changes the garbage bag and places the can next to her bed, where Jemma is now curled up, already half-asleep.

Jemma drifts off while Daisy resumes her studies, but Daisy keeps looking over at Jemma, to either check on or admire her, Daisy can’t decide; all she knows is that tonight of all nights awoke something inside her she had no idea was there.

Hopefully, maybe, Jemma got that feeling, too.

I had not known about my other health insurance company, Aetna student health care, since they never gave me any information or membership details, and I was automatically enrolled for it when I entered my university. Car Accident and Insurance?

On 7/24 I was at a Dairy Queen drive thru the person behind me hit the truck I was driving. I was looking at her in the rear view mirror the entire time. She had a cigarette hanging from her mouth that was unlit and she eventually backed up after hitting me. I got out of the truck and looked and I did not see any damage. She then said I didn't move you hit me I then told her No I did not hit you I am in front of you and this truck was never in reverse. Since there was no damage to the truck I did not bother getting any of her information since it was not my fault. On 7/27 I got a call from the police saying she told them I hit her. I gave them my side of the story and they said she had a witness who was a passenger in her car and they will be in touch. I also let them know I had a witness as well. The cop called me back yesterday and wanted to get my insurance information so her and I could exchange information. My question is do I have to give my insurance information to this cop? I did not hit this woman and I think she is trying to get one over on the insurance company. The cop said yesterday I'm surprised the truck does not have any damage because her car does have damage. This truck was a rental truck which was inspected at the time it was dropped back off at the rental company obviously there was no damage to it. This woman looked like she was on something to begin with and I'm guessing she was not paying attention probably looking for a lighter and let off the break and hit me. Which I still don't see how her car would be so damaged. I don't want this con artist having my information. I agree that no one should be criticized for what ship they like. That's pretty shitty. But I guess I didn't really see OP's post as criticism of the people who like it, just the ship itself, but I could be wrong! That was just my initial interpretation.

I can understand if someone was constantly complaining about the same ship and just hating on it all the time, but frankly I don't see anything wrong with writing an essay about your thoughts on something. Fans write essays about what they love about stuff or their theories all the time, so I feel like a negative essay should be fine too? I dunno heheh.

Now I'll recognize that I'm kinda over-sensitive, so I don't know if I would feel very good about someone being really negative about my favorite ship in the tags, but I think it would depend on what they actually said. As long as there's no "wow I can't believe anyone likes this, you're dumb is you like this" kinda shit, I would hope that I could be fine with it existing.

I am torn about how I feel about putting it in the tags still. And believe me, I want to like lapidot, I really do. I admit it, I even shipped it for a little while after Room for Ruby aired. It had it's moments and it worked fairly well.

Notice how I say "worked,"

Why did I say "worked" And not "works"?

Because along came "Raising The Barn" and F U C K E D everything up.

I will stand by my opinion no matter WHAT anyone says, lapidot is a toxic relationship.

Quick side note: A toxic relationship and an abusive relationship are two completely different things. A toxic relationship is when you're good friends with somebody but it isn't exactly healthy. They can be manipulating you intentionally or unintentionally, and sometimes they can be fixed and worked out. An abusive relationship is where someone is actively and purposely hurts you either physically or emotionally, and you should never work out that kind of relationship no matter what.

Now back on topic. Before you leave a comment saying something like "LaPiDoT Isn'T tOxIc yOU fUCkER, yOu'RE JuST a PIssY AMEdOt SHiPPeR gO KYS." Let me explain why I beileve lapidot is toxic.

To start off, I always noticed something about the way Peridot acted around Lapis was...off, but I could never put my finger on exactly what it was. All I knew was something in my gut told me that something was wrong, and ding ding ding I was right. Rasing The Barn, gave me the anwser I had been seeking all that time.

Notice Peridot's behavior around literally anyone else besides Lapis. She's not afraid to speak her mind or lash out if she gets angry, however, when she's around Lapis, this isn't the case. She would lie about her true feelings in order to not upset Lapis. In Raising The Barn, Peridot straight up says to Lapis "Well, there are many things I should say, but they would upset you so in general I don't say those things." This behavior is very out of character for Peridot, as I said, she doesn't restrict herself around anybody else. She doesn't conceal anything around Garnet, Pearl, Amethyst, or Steven, and even strangers. As she was not afraid to yell at Mr. Smiley for refusing to let her on the rollar coaster at funland.

Also, there are several examples of Peridot getting nervous and/or scared when someone else mentions Lapis' triggers or when Lapis actually is upset.

The first example of this is in Beta. Where after Amethyst exclaims, "Who has time for any of that when Jasper is out there?!" Peridot breaks a nervous sweat and repiles while pointing to Lapis, "Uh, Amethyst I'd, uh, try not to use the 'J' word so loosely around here."

The next example is in Back To The Moon where Amethyst (shapeshifted as Jasper) asks Peridot and Lapis, "Oh, hey, you guys wanna be prisoners too?" And Peridot doesn't reply verbally but instead puts on a very anxious face as she grabs Lapis.

Another example is in Room for Ruby Where after Lapis storms off, Peridot can be seen cowering in fear shortly afterwards.

The final examples are definitely the strongest. Both of these examples are In Raising the Barn, The first starts off at the beginning of the episode. Peridot clearly doesnt want to leave Earth, but instead of directly comforting Lapis that she doesn't want to leave, she tries to work around the problem by stalling her with questions of how they can't leave behind their stuff. Eventually Lapis gets fed up and shouts, "There's no need to get so emotional!" To which Peridot flinches back, muffles herself with a very scared and hurt face, and mumbles, "You're right. I'm sorry."

Near the end of the episode Peridot yanks Pumpkin around so hard she falls. Afterwards, she goes to apologise to her, to which this conversation between Peridot and Steven happens.

Steven: "Whoa, Peridot, it sounds like you don't really want to go!"

Peridot: "I'm sorry, Pumpkin. I didn't mean to yank you around. It's just we don't have a choice in this."

Steven: "What do you mean you don't have a choice? Peridot, you should really talk to Lapis about this!"

Peridot: "I can't"

Steven: "What, why not?!

The fact Peridot straight up admits she feels as if she doesn't have a choice but to do what Lapis wants, and that she can't talk to her about it, says a lot about their true off-screen relationship. I am aware there was a deleted line where Lapis was going to ask Peridot "Are you afraid of me?". The crewniverse ended up cutting it out because they didn't want the conflict to be one sided. The fact that this line was even considered proves to me that something was up between Lapis and Peridot off screen, that in which, we never got to see and probably will never see.

The exact reason of why Peridot felt this way is unknown, but I would place my bets its because of how Lapis treated her in Barn Mates, In my eyes, Peridot quickly learned to fear Lapis' temper because of how destuctive she can be when angry. The meep morp "Wow Thanks," (the scupture of Peridot's crushed tape recorder) served as a reminder of what Lapis could do to Peridot if she got upset with her. So Peridot decided to just keep everything to herself when around Lapis in fear of upsetting Lapis. (Now that's all just speculation, but to me its the most logical reason.)

It's not just that Peridot was afraid of comforting Lapis with her true feelings, Peridot also was a complete doormat around

Lapis, which again, is something extremely out of character for Peridot. because whenever she's around others besides Lapis she's not afraid to stand up for herself. Peridot can be seen standing up for herself as early as The Return and Jailbreak where she's willingy questioning Jasper's attitude and decisions depsite Jasper being her superior. She is even seen standing up to Yellow Diamond, an intergalactic dictator who could shatter her on the spot if she really wanted to, two seperate times. Yet, she sumbisses herself to Lapis of all people? In "Rasing the Barn," Peridot was willing to literally give up her livelihood, abandon Earth when she beileved needed her, give up all her crops, and possibly never see her other friends again, depsite not wanting to do so just because in her eyes "Lapis needed her," This doesn't make sense given that she's stood up for herself to much, much more powerful people. So...why not Lapis? Again, this ties into Peridot being afraid of Lapis' temper.

Peridot would also do a lot of work in order to keep Lapis happy, an example of this would be her literally bending over backwards in order to cheer Lapis up after Steven was abducted. Another being in Room For Ruby where she is seen comforting Lapis after she storms off, (she seemed very nervous during the entire time she was comforting her as well). However, Lapis almost never gave anything back. There is only one brief time where Lapis is shown comforting Peridot, and it was very short and sweet. When Peridot is sad that Pumpkin was made by Steven and not her and Lapis, all Lapis does is say "Well we made this [pumpkin]."

Look, deny it all you want, but doesnt this sound like an extremely unheahlty relastionship to have with literally anyone? If you said yes, then you're saying lapidot is a toxic relationship and that proves my argument.

Since we didn't see how Lapis and Peridot made up after the whole Lapis leaving Earth arc, it's very likely that their relationship has not changed, and I will NEVER change my mind that lapidot is toxic unless we see Lapis and Peridot talking about their previous relationship before Raising The Barn and argeeing to fix it.

So in conclusion, in my opinion Lapidot is without a doubt worst ship in SU besides Japis because of moral and narrative reasons, and I will stick by this verdict unless we get to see Lapis and Peridot talk things out on screen.

Ending note: If you read this all the way to the end, well, I really appaicate it. I spent four hours writing and revising this in order to make it as perfect and clear as possible. Also, kudos to any lapidot shippers who read this entire thing and don't wanna reach their arms through their phone/computer and strangle me on the spot. I'm honestly really glad you can find something in lapidot that you enjoy that I can't. Of course, I completely respect your opinion if you enjoy lapidot, and I'm not trying to hate on people who enjoy the ship.
