DAMN that's even more than i found. i was admittedly crude with my scraping method, grabbing any keyword specific to she-ra i could think of (mostly characters names) and filtering for tweets by crew with those words so i wouldn't be wading through years of irrelevant posts, but obviously that first post by nate didn't include any she-ra keywords (aside from the studio i didn't know the name of before i started this current dive) so stuff slipped through the cracks. this knowledge is now going to haunt me (more tweets linked in the replies)

Amena, Murderbot, and Violence

Thinking today about Amena and violence in The Murderbot Diaries.

Like, Amena is from Preservation, a planet whose murder rate is barely above that of an uninhabited planet, where finding an unexpected dead body is so shocking that they close the entire space station IMMEDIATELY. And the other characters from Preservation tend to...let's say look askance at Murderbot's murdering. There's Gurathin challenging whether Murderbot has the right to kill Mensah's captors or Thiago being really upset at the thought that Murderbot might have killed the raiders who were trying to kidnap and/or murder the survey crew. There's also the moment that Murderbot thinks about how it's never killed anyone directly in front of Ratthi, and how it wants to keep it that way, so that Ratthi will keep thinking the best of it.

And Amena was raised on this planet, and so far as I know hadn't really left up until the survey assignment in Network Effect, who suddenly finds herself kidnapped along with Murderbot. And Murderbot is losing it because it thinks ART is dead, and ends up ripping one of the Target's lungs out in front of Amena while messily murdering it.

And Amena's response is...shockingly chill? Like, I guess she's also in shock and scared and Murderbot is the only person on her side at the moment, but it's still an incredibly violent killing done right in front of her and she never really seems to blink at it. Later, the very second that Ras shoots Murderbot, Amena jumps onto his back and tries to choke him out. Like, that's her first and immediate reaction--and this is like 30 minutes after the "Murderbot rips someone's lungs out" thing.

And there is something touching about how "ride or die" Amena is with Murderbot even though she thinks it doesn't like her. And about how willing Amena is to deal with whatever is happening. How at the end of that day, when they've been in a space battle and kidnapped and Murderbot did some murdering and Ras died and Eletra was almost fried and Murderbot was having multiple emotional breakdowns...Amena is worried that Murderbot is mad because she didn't defend it enough when Ras & Eletra were being verbally mean. Like, THAT'S what she thinks might affect their relationship.

I don't know what I'm getting at, exactly, except that I think Amena is a fascinating character.

Hey there lovelies! I saw so much continuous clowning today! 2-3 days in a row? It's been a while since we've had that much all at once! I'm so happy to see people feeling the love and camaraderie with each other again! I hope that continues even if we see things calm down! Something I heard in WJW today that really stuck with me was "We just want YOU Kristian", something David said when Kristian kept asking if his Belfast accent was okay for the role. How absolutely heartwarming is that? We knew that David and the rest of the cast and crew were kind and wanted everyone to be themselves, but to hear that out of the mouth of Kristian and how it affected him, in his book where he poured out his soul-- just hit so much harder. That really is one of the major values that drew me, and I know quite a few others of the crew to OFMD so hard. Acceptance and celebration of individual uniqueness is at the core of OFMD-- it's part of the building blocks that makes our show so special. Each crew member has their own skills they bring to the table, and we can feel safe when we're allowed to be our true selves around others.

OFMD exudes that kind of acceptance in droves. We can hear it in their varying accents, in the wide array of queer portrayal, in the character's love and acceptance and forgiveness of each other-- in the music, the stage decoration, and the cinematography. We each are different, and we all bring things to the table that make the fandom, or the world a better place. We may not always get along, but it is in the uniqueness of so many crew we find creativity, love, kindness, acceptance, and a place where we can feel safe and learn to be more of our true and authentic selves. Embrace your uniqueness lovelies. You are different from me, from your moots, from your favorite fan artist/writer and that's fucking beautiful. We want YOU, crew. Be YOU in everything you do. What Do Ability Scores Represent?

Recently, Into The Odd and the players in my home game helped me realise something fundamental:

Ability scores represent how good you are at acting under pressure.

STR isn't strength, it's toughness;

DEX really means reflexes;

WIS is more accurately calm or willpower;

etc.

It is convention in roleplaying games that your ability scores / attributes / six stats determine who your character is.

High DEX means your character is spry, capable of acrobatic flourish; a good Willpower generally means you can browbeat others / themselves / reality (if you are spellcaster) into doing what they want; etc.

There is pleasure in looking at a sheet and seeing: Oh! These are the things my character is good at.

But you do run into problems. Does my 18 DEX rogue know they are fleeter than the 17 DEX bard? What if my wizard thinks she is stronger than her 10 STR? What if I have a brilliant scheme but my barbarian only has 9 INT?

How well, in other words, does the map represent the territory?

I've got three players in my home game:

Vesha plays the teenaged trader Khabar (and his buffalo friend / parent-figure, Paal);

Amanda plays the monkey warrior Boots-Ra, now going white-furred;

Aish plays Captain Phung.

Phung does not yet own a proper sea-going vessel. Perhaps he lost his previous ship? Perhaps he never had one. (He does have a magic five-person sampan, though!)

He is impulsive. He tends to make dodgy deals with hapless village-folk, pick up dangerous-looking objects, and flirt with dangerous-looking men.

Mechanics-wise, here's how my interactions with Aish / Phung tend to go:

Me: Okay, make a DEX save to duck before the hunter stabs you. Aish: Damn, my DEX is only 6, guess we'll see ... Amanda: Oh, no, Phung!

In a previous session:

Me: Okay, I think I'll call for a WIL save, because the ghost in the goat skull is trying to possess you. Aish: Well, my WIL is 5, hopefully this works out ... Vesha: Oh shit, Phung!

Some sessions back:

Me: The automaton shoves you. Make a STR save? Otherwise you'll be on the ground at its mercy. Aish: Guys I have 6 STR, I may be in trouble here. Me: Wait wait wait. What are your stats again?

So it turns out that Aish had terrible rolls at chargen. STR 6 DEX 6 WIL 5. Just going by ability scores, Phung is an idiot weakling.

Thing is, Phung isn't an idiot weakling.

I've got crafty players; they are pretty good at cooking up multi-part schemes. (Their go-to tactic is bamboozling rival factions to show up at the same place, then benefit from the fallout.)

Phung is generally the face for whatever racket they've got going: he's the most obvious leader (the party is generally "Captain Phung and crew"), and Aish plays him as a capable, charismatic go-getter.

Looking at the character sheet, is Aish playing Phung wrong?

Fuck that. A player cannot play their own character wrong. I reject this notion outright.

What's going on?

Different rulesets try to bridge the gaps between player action, character ability, and abstract math in different ways: eliminating mental attributes; going totally skill-based; etc.

The ruleset that comes closest to "solving" this, for me, is Into The Odd.

Saves are the only kind of test player-characters make, in ITO and its derivatives. This is key.

The ruleset assumes competency on the part of characters; you only go to the dice if you need to figure out stuff that is out of your control.

How badly a straight-up fight goes; whether you can jump aside in time if you've accidentally sprung a trap; whether you can improvise a lie on the fly.

Implicitly, and in practice:

The STR stat in ITO is more accurately toughness---ie: how well you can withstand a physically demanding situation you didn't prepare for.

Ditto DEX, which is an abstraction for how quickly your reflexes trigger.

Same with WIL, which is how well you stay calm under duress.

I can be sharp when I've got time and it is a subject I have experience in. But suddenly ask me to make a speech and I'm toast (low INT).

Some folks have no martial arts training but can hold their own if a brawl breaks out in a bar (high STR).

Captain Phung is a pretty cool operator when he's in control, but tends to seize up when things go off the rails (low WIL).

There's my answer to the conundrum of Captain Phung: he's a genuinely capable guy. He's just not necessarily great under stress. His reach exceeds his grasp, sometimes.

Your ability scores don't represent who your character is. Your ability scores represent who your character is, when under duress.

In other words:

Ability scores are who your character is when they are not in control. Ability scores are your character's reactions.

I do feel slow on the uptake, for only grokking this now.

Chris McDowall probably has a post from the mid 2010s or something where he discusses this aspect design in detail, the clever genius bastard. It is probably internalised play-culture within the ITO-and-descendants community; Emms points out that the current edition of Mothership explicitly talks about stats in this way.

Am glad to have a regular TTRPG group again, and I have them to thank for my epiphany!

another thing that bugs me about adora's/she-ra's character design is how inconsistent her muscles are. her arms look like this in some frames

which looks somewhat decently muscular. but then in other frames, they look like this

where there's basically no girth at all. besides, the crew's idea of muscles seem to be a bump and a line, which really doesn't communicate much.

for example, look at korra's character design.

the animators never, and i mean NEVER forget to make her look as ripped as possible, especially during fight scenes. because that was her charm, her muscles are an important part of who she is. and they look like actual biceps, not arms with a slight bump on it.

she only looks less muscular in s4, because she was disabled and inactive for several years and lost a lot of muscle mass due to that.

so yeah, it does confuse me when people say that adora or she-ra is muscular, because she's really not. and it's not a matter of the art style either, because characters like huntara and scorpia are drawn way more muscular. if the creators really wanted diverse body types and a strong female warrior, why didn't they make adora more muscular?

Ok ive already done that in part here, but have some more! :D

If he was sensitive to storms before, he’s super sensitive now. Perks up like a rabbit smelling a predator.

Similarly, I think it’d be fun if Ras used his acute senses as a way to send him a recall signal. Either a signal using electricity, like an EMP, or more comedically a whole ass dog whistle. He pauses in the middle of an interaction before just leaving to return to the Shadow Dojo crew without a single word of explanation to whoever he’s interacting with.

You may have noticed that I’ve begun giving him wolf-like eyes in my recent art of him. This is because I think it looks cool.

He probably chews as a stim a lot more. I imagine he already did but now the problem is 200% worse.

Leaning a bit more into werewolf territory here, for when i decide to give him a wolf form:

He will go wolf form whenever he doesn’t want to talk or interact with people. Everyone seems to take his growls a bit more seriously when he has a long maw full of sharp teeth.

Everyone but Wyldfyre, that is; she appears to lack any fear instincts and, to be fair, Jay can’t bring himself to maul a 13 year old. When the others tried to follow her lead, they quickly found out that they did not have the same immunity.

Y’know the fantastic mr fox wolf scene. That's the vibes i want between Jay and the Ninja before they realise it’s him..

At first he kills a few small animals that live near the monastery. Rabbits, squirrels, he kills a rat at one point and leaves it on Cole’s bed. He mostly does this to piss the ninja off, so once again this behaviour mostly stops when he stops being an asshole, but at some point post-memory-return he accidentally kills a rabbit when trying to play with it and goes crying to Nya about it.

While Murderbot is processing ART's probable death and the signs of ART's crew's probable deaths it has a flash of what if it found Dr. Mensah's family's house invaded and empty like this.... Oh Murderbot

I forgot about this bit. Their colony was seeded and then left to die. Then an independent colony ship got them all out of there...

I love how Amena's first contact with corporates is like: dehumanisation of my protector and mothers friend, casual treatment of colony genocide like the one that almost killed my people, and: these people don't even understand that slavery makes people angry.

I LOVE the interactions between Amena and murderbot. Amena going: im no intrepid explorer like my mom (Mensah) or a genius!

But she's trying obviously to be the intrepid explorer in future (why else intern) and she's definitely doing very good. Mensah stock right there. Helps to have secunit there ofc

I love how Amena is like: my teacher SAID corporations are genocidal evil maniacs but ITS ACTUALLY TRUE

And that bit about Amena going: you could just cut it out out of your neck! And murderbot going: note to self don't give her a reason to do that

This is my boy Caspian or Cas for short. He's meant to be based on a lionfish, and I'm slowly tweaking his design so he reads as such 😅

I shan't bore you with his full backstory, so I'll give you a tl;dr version. Although hmu if you wanna hear all of his backstory 👀

In his official canon, Cas is an ex-Sun Pirate turned Revolutionary. He was framed for murder and has spent time in Impel Down. He is the doctor of the crew/The RA, and herbal/traditional medicine is his field of expertise. He loves plants and is very passionate about them, he will gladly infodump about them if you let him. He also really loves reading and is a huge bookworm. Oh, and he was an old friend/flame of Arlong at some point ❤️‍🔥

However, his lore/backstory is slightly different in my One Piece D&D game. He's a lot younger, he didn't join the Sun Pirates, although they did save him from being kidnapped when he was a child. Our pirate crew is called The Winged Wyverns, our ship is The Red Maw, and Cas is the first mate instead of the doctor.

Some of the hijinks that D&D!Cas has gotten upto include:

° Walked into the wrong restaurant and nearly getting killed by Celestial Dragons.

°Failed his Con save, got wasted and drunkenly joked that Blackbeard is his bestie. Now everyone believes that The Winged Wyverns and the Blackbeard Pirates are allies and is scared of us.

°Is currently pretending to be a CP0 agent and is enjoying scaring the shit out of local Marines
