Tom and Jerry: Back to Oz (2016)
Tumblr media
While I didn't enjoy this film, that doesn't mean you won't. No matter what I say, the people involved in this project did it: they actually made a movie. That's something to be applauded. With that established...
When I saw Tom and Jerry: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, I saw unintentional comedic gold. The shoehorned cat and mouse created plot holes, the crappy animation made for many meme-worthy frames, plus it was just so out-of-nowhere the very title made me laugh. What was next Tom and Jerry and Kramer vs. Kramer? Tom and Jerry and Me, Myself & Irene? I couldn't wait to see Tom and Jerry and the Wizard of Oz but it disappointed me. It’s a film made worse by being better, which is also very much the case for this sequel.
Following her return to Kansas after her adventure in the wonderful land of Oz, Dorothy Gale (voiced by Grey Griffin) learns the farm’s livestock is about to be forfeited to Mr. Bibb (Jason Alexander) unless the family repays their debt to him. Worse, the Nome King (also Jason Alexander) has attacked the Emerald City and threatens to sink it so he can reclaim its emeralds. Rejoined by her friends The Scarecrow (Michael Gough), The Cowardly Lion (Todd Stashwick), The Tinman (Rob Paulsen), her faithful dog Toto… and Tom and Jerry, Dorothy must stop this new threat to the kingdom and save the farm too.
Much like its predecessor, it’s hard to pinpoint who this film is for. “Wizard of Oz” fans may get a kick out of seeing some of the books’ less well-known elements, like the Jitterbug (James Monroe Iglehart, whose character was originally meant to appear in the 1939 classic but was ultimately cut) and the Nome King. I'd wager they'd rather watch Return to Oz, or read the books instead. It’d be different if the animation was good but it’s just ok. At its worst, it's bad without ever becoming so bad it’s hilarious. What a shame. The end credits show some pre-production stills and animatics in which the characters ARE consistently on-model and look nice. Clearly, this was a production made as cheaply and quickly as possible.
Assuming Tom and Jerry fans are interested in seeing the characters interact with L. Frank Baum’s creations, they'll find a  few decent gags here. They’re nothing special but these laughs prevent this creation from becoming painful. I guess you can also appreciate that as a sequel, this is “good” in the sense that, unlike so many other Oz sequels, we actually get to see the characters we liked the first time around come back. Well, not ALL of them. Thankfully, the irritating Tuffy (Kath Soucie) is kept to a minimum this time.
The songs are so bland and unmemorable I nearly forgot to mention them. The best bits of music is another rendition of Over the Rainbow which you’d trade in for a recording of Judy Garland’s any day of the week. That's all I've got to say about that.
Overall, Tom and Jerry: Back to Oz is betterrrr (?) than the first but not by much. It still struggles to validate its existence. This is the kind of movie you only end up watching because your grandma bought it for you at the gas station because she thought it was your birthday and forgot that you’re now a grown man. I didn’t hate it but would be hard-pressed to find anyone I'd recommend it to. (On DVD, February 8, 2019)

Matika Wilbur & Adrienne Keene|11/20/2020
This episode talks with Wampanoag scholars Paula Peters and Linda Coombs, who tell us the real story of Thanksgiving, from an Indigenous Perspective. Thanksgiving is a time for people to come together with their families and give thanks for the blessings in their lives; but the American holiday is rooted in historical fallacy and upholds tired settler colonial belief systems. Instead, let's begin to understand the real story of Thanksgiving and the complex history undergirding this event in relation to Indigenous people. The path to reconciliation starts with honest acknowledgement of our past, with open eyes, and open hearts for a better future. It is time for us to be in good relation with one another. We can do that by learning and unlearning how to give thanks in a good way. “Cabaret” show #804
Tumblr media
Anytime Cabaret is on a theatre company’s season, I get chills. This piece of musical theatre is timeless and timely, comedic and dramatic, romantic and heartbreaking (synonymous?). Sierra Repertory Theatre’s production of this masterpiece, under the sturdy and talented direction of Scott Viets, is a Cabaret where you need to be patient, lean forward in your seat, and literally leave your troubles outside. The payoff to Mr. Viets’ calculated long game of plot and gut-punch payoff is so worth the pace and disconnect between musical number and book scene staging. Where in some contexts this disconnect would detract from the impact, Sierra Rep’s production makes this disconnect precisely what the concept calls for. This is a Cabaret not to be missed.
Tumblr media
(Jerry Lee (Emcee); Photo credit: ClearyVision)
Led by the Emcee, Jerry Lee’s tongue-in-cheek, wink-to-the-audience delivery of the iconic opener “Wilkommen” doesn’t take itself too seriously while still drawing the audience in. It is in this number that the audience can take note that this musical is a true ensemble piece, where no role is more important than another; each role has its part to do and story to tell, but the message dare not be impeded by showmanship or taking the spotlight. This choice pays off in droves throughout the production. Mr. Lee though, not to be misunderstood, takes the stage as the Emcee every time he, well, takes the stage. “Two Ladies” is a frivolous romp of contradictions and promiscuity; “Money” is an excellent patter of social and political commentary, staged flawlessly by choreographer Bryan Knowlton; and Mr. Lee’s turn in “I Don’t Care Much” is a torch song  showstopper if I’ve ever seen one.
Tumblr media
(Center-Jackie Vanderbeck (Sally), surrounded by the Kit Kat Klub Girls; Photo credit: ClearyVision)
Jackie Vanderbeck is a Sally worth studying. Ms. Vanderbeck’s tonality, physicality, and optimism colors her Sally as, to be frank, a drug-addicted alcoholic who has undiagnosed ADHD. Ms. Vanderbeck never loses an ounce of energy of bombarded focus in the book scenes, but her Sally is most calm and focused when at the Kit Kit Klub, performing for her crowd, doing what Sally thinks she does best. “Don’t Tell Mama” and “Mein Herr” are precisely what the audience wants to see and hear, crisp vocal and sensual physicality from Sally and the dancers. But Ms. Vanderbeck starts peeling away the layers in a stirring, vulnerable “Maybe This Time.” Act Two is where Mr. Viets’ direction and Ms. Vanderbeck’s talents come together to crush hearts in the title song that. A showstopper of a song like “Cabaret” has so much expectation behind it, but here is done as raw and emotionally naked as can be, as if it’s the first time it has ever been performed. To cap it all off, the subsequent final book scene following that 11 0’ clock number is a masterclass in a two-hander final scene.
Tumblr media
(Kyle Smith (Cliff) and Jackie Vanderbeck (Sally); Photo credit: ClearyVision)
Kyle Smith is a loveable Cliff, one you want to see succeed while genuinely interested in seeing how difficult and enticing Germany is being to him. He and Ms. Vanderbeck do a swell job in their one duet, “Perfectly Marvelous,” and develop their chemistry on a fast-paced track to heartbreak, calibrated well by Mr. Viets’ staging. Ben Stasny has a more animated turn to Ernst Ludwig which may come across as disingenuous to the character, but certainly conveys that he is, in fact, part of the beginnings of the NAZI Party. Emily Gatesman is a positively domineering Fraulein Kost, having promiscuously-driven comedic turns in each sailor scene she has. To be sure, she has given the due diligence of legit musical theatre chops in a beautifully sung “Married.” Dianne Manaster and Marc Geller are supporting standouts as the #relationshipgoals older couple, Fraulein Schneider and Herr Schultz, respectively. To be sure, this is the love story audiences must take stock in, for it’s in their commitment to each other and commitment to their individual past that colors what a true relationship requires. Ms. Manaster delivers a passionate, vivacious Fraulein, and absolutely nails the comedic contemplation in “So What?” only to tug at the heartstrings, making the audience really feel the anguish in a heartfelt, gorgeously affecting “What Would You Do?” Mr. Geller is a charming, sweet, wise gentleman whose turns in “It Couldn’t Please Me More,” “Married” and its reprise are so well-nuanced and motivated that his optimism of Germany protecting him makes the ending all the more heart wrenching to see develop. There’s true praise to be given when the audience already knows what the ending is, but the character doesn’t, and yet, we are still hoping for something different to happen. Such is the case in Ms. Manaster’s and Mr. Geller’s performance.
Tumblr media
(Marc Geller (Herr Schultz) and Dianne Manaster (Fraulein Schneider); Photo credit: ClearyVision)
Michael Kramer’s two-level set design makes the stage look like a cinematic throne of riches, a place where the audience wants to be, and drink at, and see entertainment at. Mr. Viets and lighting designer Peter Liebold make full use of the excitement the Kit Kat Klub provides in its musical numbers while bringing in the intimate spots for the two-hander scenes. B. Benjamin Weigel’s costumes dress the cast in period, alluring costumes, giving personality to each character before a line or lyric are uttered. This Cabaret takes what Kander/Ebb/Masteroff were trying to say in the 60’s and say it just as loud in 2019. Go see this show!

Cabaret plays through October 27th

“The Road to Rock n’ Roll - Guitars” Date: March 14, 2019 © Scott Fraser Photography
Dedicated to Rod Coulter. The first guitarist in my life.
In 1971 legendary guitar player and song writer Alvin Lee wrote the song “I’d Love to Change the World. I was born in 1970, so it’s before my time. But I did grow up listening to it, thanks to three amazing uncles. In 1994, the Sunset Strip based band, L.A. Guns released a cover of it on their album Vicious Circles. With all respect to Alvin Lee, I prefer Tracii Guns’ version of the song. It’s got an edge to it. It touches my soul. Tracii’s chops, his notes, pure, clean, defined, at times ethereal, and delivered with a punch - I can’t help myself, but smile. I end up air guitaring to it every time. In my head I see his fingers on the fretboard, and his other hand as he strums and picks. I see the body of the guitar, the pick-ups, the dials. In my head while I am listening, Tracii is playing live on stage, and I am front-row right in front of him, soaking up with every sense, the moment.
But let’s back up a bit.
1975 was a seminal year for me. It was the year I decided I wanted to play drums, and it was the year I took an active interest in photography. I was five at the time. Thanks to the music of Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys, and a couple of photographers named Linda McCartney and  L.A. based photographer Greg Papazian.
Uncle Art was cool enough to allow this little kid, hang out with him and his friends. CHOM FM would play in the background while Art and his friends would flip through rock magazines. Here I was this five year old kid hanging out with a bunch of fifteen to twenty year olds, while they chilled, played cards and listening to music. I loved it, it was my sanctuary. I would sit quietly out of the way, and just listen as they talked about the music playing, and the photographs in the magazines. They would discuss for hours on end the merit of this song, or that song. Who played it better? The meaning of the lyrics, how “deep” a note went, the crunch of the electric guitar. How cool so and so looked in that shot. And they would ask me what I thought, including me in the conversations. They were teens in the mid seventies in Montreal, had long hair, and cool clothes. Leather jackets and denim, like their heroes in the bands they listened to. That bedroom in that little house on the east end of Montreal is where my rock n’ roll journey began.
In the fall of 1975 I would buy my first albums at a local record store. I knew I wanted a Beach Boy album, and I had enough money saved up to buy a second album. I had hoped that Art would come along to advise me as to what to buy because I wanted something that wasn’t my mom and dad’s music. I wanted something like the music I heard on the FM station and like what Art and his friends listened to. I ended up purchasing a K-Tel album with a bunch of different bands playing songs on it. I figured it was the best way to own new music. The first song I fell i love with on that record was “Smoking’ In The Boys Room” by Brownsville Station. I had hoped when I bought the album that I would have new songs to play my drums along to. But it was the guitar playing that caught my attention. The twang, the rhythm and the way it sounded. Yeah, I loved the drums in it as well, but it really did catch my attention because of the guitar. It’s a balls out blues tune done rock n’ roll.
The music photography of the early seventies until the late1980’s would show case some of the best photography ever done. Before the internet and modern social media, bands and musicians used photographs in magazines to define their image and look. The record labels had long ago realized you could sell more records if your band was being showcased in a music magazine. It was also the era of the fanzine as independent writers, journalists and photographers documented the local scene. It was the era as a teen that you hung posters of the bands you loved on your bedroom walls. And many went a step further, like myself, cutting photos out of magazines to pin to on our walls. Punk and Metal came of age, and Generation X grew into teens and young adults. Raised on the photographs, posters and the FM waves we grew into young adults as we searched for our own identities. Static images had been our visual medium of consumption, that is until video came along and killed a radio star.
As a teenager I got five dollars a week allowance, so it would take me three weeks of saving to buy a new album which was anywhere from ten to fifteen dollars. Birthday, christmas or any gift money went towards music. In a month I could save and buy one album and one to two rock magazines. Babysitting and odd jobs were a means to an end. It was an era where a lot of the time that meant I bought an album without hearing more than one song on it. Other times you bought because you had liked the artwork, or photos on the album cover. Or maybe your friends had talked about it, or you had read about it in Circus or Hit Parader magazine.
My friends and I would make agreements as to who bought what album so that we could get together and share them. I’d buy Metallica, Rod would buy Ozzy Osbourne, Jay would buy Def Leppard. My friends and I would trade albums with one another so that each of us, could get a chance to hear new music. You went out and bought the albums for yourself so that you could look at the photos, the artwork, and the credits and if you were lucky, the lyrics while listening to the album play. You went to concerts and bought T-shirts, posters, back patches and tour books and when you got home from the concert, you’d share it all with your friends the following day.
Back to the guitar…
I’m a Randy Rhoads guy. Yes, I appreciate what Jimi Hendrix did. But I prefer the sound, the tones and the classical influence of Randy’s playing. Randy was a metal/hard-rock/classical guitarist. Those iconic photos of him with his Les Paul and Jackson V are forever burned into my memory. That first time I heard Crazy Train by Ozzy off of the Blizzard of Ozz album, I was blown away. In that moment I knew I would never ever play that good, and I was okay with that. I didn’t have to. I knew right then and there, I wanted to either play in bands and with people who could play like that, or somehow be part of the scene. Maybe I would be a roadie, maybe a guitar tech, maybe a lighting guy. I didn’t care what I did, as long as I was part of it. Over the years I played in bands, worked as a lighting tech, help promote shows and gigs, created gig posters, designed album covers and T-shirts, and have done roadie more than I care to admit.
To this day I can’t play guitar to save my life. That is on me. I have owned some beautiful guitars over the years including a 1986 USA made Kramer, but I never put the time and effort in to really learn. There was always something else I wanted to do, and I liked singing, so I would work on vocals. I did however fill my life with guitar players. Starting with Rod Coulter who had been a childhood friend and it has continued to players like Benny Kemp who plays in a rising speed metal band Roadrash. They are my friends, they are people I call Brother and Sister, they are my Rock n’ Roll Family. They have been my mentors and others have been my protege. We’re a family and I am so grateful for that.
At fourty-eight years of age, I still love my music loud. I love my punk more than ever, and am still listening to my metal. I still air guitar along to the songs I love. If I know the words odds are I am going to be singing along. I still think of putting a band together form time to time and recording album, maybe one day I will. These days though, I am happy to be the Photographer. I love photographing musicians and their instruments. I am an editorial music photographer. I’m there to document the moment and in the process make the musicians look good. I am shooting first and foremost for the musicians. I am also an artist, so i want to have something that means something to myself as well as the musician in question.
At this stage in my life my photographs have been published in music magazines, used as album covers, album art work, promo posters and T-shirts. I’d like to think I have my own style, and I thank my mentors for taking the time to teach me how to do what I now do so well. Thank you Mike, Scott, Greg and Frank - my shots wouldn’t be what they are without your tutelage.
Guitars the photographic series, is my tribute to the instruments first created by Leo Fender and Les Paul all those years ago. It’s about the players and the instruments that define rock music. The photographs within the series is for the musicians who play the notes. It may just be “a piece of wood, with six metal strings” but in the hands of a musician who knows how to play, it is tool of magic. It’s my attempt as an artist to create a visual representation of the moment, the energy, the sound being played. To capture in colour and monochrome, the feel of it all, at that moment the music is playing. The use of noise and grain to match the distortion and saturation of the Marshall amps. It is my humble attempt as an artist to say Thank You.
You can look at the photographs without music playing, but it’s better if you have the song turned up.

Tumblr media
CICELY TYSON
LOS ANGELES, CA –The Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences voted Tuesday night (September 4) to present Honorary Awards to publicist Marvin Levy, composer Lalo Schifrin and actress Cicely Tyson, and the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award to producers Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall. The three Oscar® statuettes and Thalberg Award will be presented at the Academy’s 10th Annual Governors Awards on Sunday, November 18, at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland Center®.
“Choosing the honorees for its awards each year is the happiest of all the Board of Governors’ work. And this year, its selection of five iconic artists was made with universal acclaim by the Academy’s 54 spirited governors,” said Academy President John Bailey.
Raised in Harlem, Tyson began her career as a model and a theater actress, appearing both on Broadway and Off-Broadway. After playing small roles in feature films and television, she was cast as Portia in “The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter” in 1968. Four years later, she received an Academy Award® nomination for her leading performance in “Sounder.” Her other notable film credits include “The River Niger,” “Fried Green Tomatoes,” “Diary of a Mad Black Woman,” “The Help,” “Alex Cross” and “Last Flag Flying.”

CBS SALUTES LUCY: THE FIRST 25 YEARS
November 28, 1976
Tumblr media
With Tributes By: William S. Paley, Desi Arnaz Sr., Milton Berle, Carol Burnett, Richard Burton, Johnny Carson, Sammy Davis Jr., Gale Gordon, Bob Hope, Danny Kaye, Dean Martin, Jimmy Stewart, Danny Thomas, Vivian Vance, Dick Van Dyke, John Wayne, and Lucille Ball
Archive Footage: Mary Wickes, *Harpo Marx, William Frawley, Pat Moran, Maury Thompson, Edward Everett Horton, Teresa Tirelli, Ross Elliott, Jerry Hausner, Bess Flowers, Dick Martin, Donald Briggs, Joe Ruskin, Bryan O'Byrne, Danny Borzage, Morgan Woodward, Victor Romito, Elvia Allman, John Williams, Lloyd Corrigan, Ernesto Molinari, Rosa Barbato, Eva Gabor, *Lucie Arnaz, Larry J. Blake, Larry Keating, Robert Carson, *John Bubbles, Paul Winchell, Mel Torme, *Ken Berry, *Red Skelton, *George Burns, *Patty Andrews, *Wayne Newton, Jerry Newton, *Desi Arnaz Jr., Tommy Amato, Don Vincent, *Jack Benny, *William Holden, Harry Bartell, Hazel Pierce, Bennett Green, Dede Ball, Dick Patterson, Roy Rowan, Vanda Barra, and +Eddie Albert
* credited in voice over
+ not on DVD release
Archival footage from: “I Love Lucy” (1951-57), “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour” (1957-60), “The Lucy Show” (1962-68), “Here's Lucy” (1968-74), “Carol + 2” (1964), “The Danny Kaye Show with Lucille Ball” (1962), and “Lucy In London” (1966).
Some stars mentioned in the opening credits by the announcer as “starring” do not actually appear in newly created tributes, but only in archival footage. This is likely due to negotiations with the stars agents (or estates) who gave permission for their images to be used in exchange for opening title credit. Those stars include: Patty Andrews, Jack Benny (died 1974), Ken Berry, John Bubbles, George Burns, William Holden, Harpo Marx (died 1964), and Wayne Newton, all of whom have considerable screen time in the clips. Although some of these names might have been used to lure viewers into watching (and not tuning away from) the two-hour program, it is probably not likely with someone like John Bubbles.
Some of those absent from archival footage include Mary Jane Croft, Kathryn Card, Doris Singleton, Charles Lane, Frank Nelson, Ann Sothern, and Sid Gould, all of whom made many appearances opposite Lucille Ball over the years.
Tumblr media
The program was very well received and received a 29 rating and 39 share of audience, figures unheard of today. Because of the anniversary theme of the show, it was never repeated.
Tumblr media
The special was issued on DVD by Image Entertainment. The cover photo is of Lucille Ball at the Emmy Awards.
Tumblr media
CBS used other artwork, inexplicably based on her costume from “Lucy Goes To Scotland” (ILL S5;E17).
Tumblr media
For the DVD release, eight minutes of the show were trimmed for a total running time of 97 minutes Among the missing segments was a tribute to the late William Frawley, hosted by Gale Gordon, featuring Frawley and Vivian Vance singing "Carolina in the Morning." Frawley died in 1966. In 1976 he was the only member of the main “I Love Lucy” cast to have passed away.  Also missing is Lucy's soft-shoe of "Makin' Whoopee" with Eddie Albert. It is possible that the owners of the music copyrights were asking more for licensing fees than the DVD producers were willing to pay or that Albert declined permission for his image to be used. Naturally, it may also have just been an editorially decision to edit the show.
Tumblr media
This special was produced before technology made restored, pristine prints available. Scenes from “I Love Lucy” (owned by CBS) are the clearest but clips from “The Lucy Show” and “Here's Lucy” (owned by others) are often quite poor.
This special is billed “The First 25 Years” but sadly Lucille Ball would only work for another decade, and not at CBS.  Although it seemed like the Tiffany Network (who adopted their ‘CBS eye’ logo the same month “I Love Lucy” premiered) and Lucy would never part, Ball joined NBC in 1980, announcing her changed allegiance with a star-studded special “Lucy Moves to NBC.” The partnership was short-lived, however. In 1986 CBS declined to pick-up “Life With Lucy” (perhaps still stinging from her departure), so it went to ABC.  This means Lucille Ball was seen on all three major networks.
Tumblr media
INTRODUCTION
The tribute show is introduced by CBS Chairman William S. Paley.  In 1964 episode of “The Lucy Show” (TLS S3;E15), Danny Kaye telephones Paley about getting tickets to his show for Lucy Carmichael. Paley, however, was not seen or heard.
To kick things off, a montage of memorable moments of Lucy on TV is underscored by Frank Sinatra singing “My Kind of Girl” by Leslie Bricusse.
Tumblr media
LUCY & DESI
A clip from “The Audition” (ILL S1;E3) leads into an appearance by Desi Arnaz Sr. standing outside Stage 2 of General Service Studios where “I Love Lucy” was first shot. Desi describes this as a scene from their pilot. The unaired “I Love Lucy” pilot (not seen until 1990), included this same material, but it was re-staged for the actual series in October 1951. This leads into a compilation of clips of Lucy Ricardo making fun of Ricky's English. Desi estimates the he and Lucy did nearly 200 shows together. Including “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hours” (13), the un-aired pilot, and the “Christmas Special,” Desi is not far off. The total comes to 194 shows, not counting their guest appearances on other programs.
Tumblr media
VITAMEATAVEGAMIN
Desi's awe and admiration of his ex-wife's craft and talent is demonstrated with a clip from the classic episode “Lucy Does a TV Commercial” (ILL S1;E30) aka “Vitameatavegamin.” Arnaz watched Lucy do the scene just off camera and his recognizable laugh can be heard on the soundtrack.
Tumblr media
HAVING A BABY
Desi recalls the show that is closest to his heart: “Lucy is Enceinte” (ILL S2;E10). The clip that follows has Ricky singing “We’re Having a Baby (My Baby and Me)” first written in 1941 for the Broadway musical Banjo Eyes. For this special, the edit includes clips of other scenes of Lucy Ricardo when expecting, including “Lucy Goes to the Hospital” (ILL S2 E16).
Tumblr media
SILENT COMEDY
To introduce his segment, Dick Van Dyke begins with pantomiming netting a butterfly on the set of his short-lived variety show “Van Dyke & Company.” A week later, Ball would guest star on the series. This intro was probably filmed at that time. Here he defines 'mime' for the audience and then introduces a clip of Lucy doing a silent movie skit as Charlie Chaplin from “Chris's New Year's Eve Party” (TLS S1;E14) and the mirror routine in “Lucy Meets Harpo Marx” (ILL S4;E28).
Tumblr media
LUCY & THE DUKE
Western star John Wayne emerges from a back lot saloon and jokingly says that of all his on-screen opponents, the most formidable one was Lucy. A clip from 1966's “Lucy and John Wayne” (TLS S5;E10) follows. In the scene Lucy Carmichael is visiting the set of Wayne's latest western and (naturally) disrupts the shoot.
Tumblr media
FRIENDS FOREVER
Vivian Vance, drinking a cup of tea in her home, talks about her beginnings on television as Mrs. Fred Mertz. Vance remembers the schemes Lucy got her involved in, mostly to get Lucy into show business. Clips include “The Operetta” (ILL S2;E5) with Lucy as Camille, the snaggle-toothed Queen of the Gypsies. In the clip, the chorus upstage her big number, “The Queen of the Gypsies” written by Eliot Daniel, who also wrote the series' theme song. Vance says they lived out their childhood fantasies on screen, like working in a chocolate factory. A clip from “Job Switching” (ILL S2;E1) has Lucy and Ethel on the candy wrapping assembly line at Kramer’s Candy Kitchen.
Tumblr media
There is also a clip from “Lucy and Viv Put in a Shower” (TLS S1;E18) where Lucy Carmichael and Vivian Bagley install a home shower, only to get trapped inside as it fills with water.
Tumblr media
TWO REDHEADS
To the music of the theme from her show, Carol Burnett (redhead #1) is seen backstage, sitting in a director's chair. She recalls meeting Lucy for the first time, when she came to the second night of Once Upon a Mattress on May 12, 1959. Carol fondly recalls that Lucy always called her “kid.” Carol introduces a clip from “Carol + 2” (1964) in which Lucy and Carol play night cleaning ladies at a talent agency singing “Chutzpah!”
Tumblr media
Danny Kaye (redhead #2) comes down a staircase to talk about Lucy's skill at physical comedy.
Kaye: “Calling Lucille Ball 'just' a comedian is like calling Margot Fonteyne 'just' a dancer.”
The dance metaphor helps Kaye introduce a clip of Lucy's dancer-like physical agility in a sketch seen on the Emmy nominated “The Danny Kaye Show with Lucille Ball” (1962) in which Lucy and Kaye go to a Japanese restaurant and must adapt to the customs of the Tea House – all without dialogue.
LUCY AROUND THE WORLD
Tumblr media
Kaye reports that Lucille Ball is on television in 78 different countries. This leads to clips from shows dubbed in French (“Lucy and the Great Bank Robbery” TLS S3;E5)...
Tumblr media
Japanese (“Lucy Becomes an Astronaut” TLS S1;E16)...
Tumblr media
Spanish (“Lucy Thinks Ricky Is Trying to Murder Her” ILL S1;E4)...
Tumblr media
and capped off with the famous grape stomping scene from “Lucy's Italian Movie” (ILL S5;E23), which was already mostly in Italian, with (humorous) English subtitles.
Tumblr media
Kaye states that Lucille Ball is so popular because she has universal appeal. He introduces a clip from “The Hollywood Unemployment Follies” (HL S3;E22) where Lucy Carter sings “Falling in Love Again (Never Wanted To)” in costume as Marlene Dietrich from the 1930 German film The Blue Angel to Gale Gordon.
Tumblr media
ALWAYS GETTING IT
This conveniently leads to discovering Gale Gordon sitting on a park bench. He says he likes the quiet of the park as opposed to working with Lucy, because nothing can spill on him. He then casts a cautionary glance at the sky and says “Watch it, pigeons!” A series of clips from “Here's Lucy” reveals Gordon “getting it” - getting wet, dirty, and generally messy through a variety of assaults.
Tumblr media
DANCING FOOL
Sammy Davis Jr. is discovered dancing on a stage. Davis is one of the only stars in the Tribute who appeared with Lucy on her show (in 1970), but is not seen in archival footage.
Sammy: “That lady does it all, man!”
He introduces clips of Lucy singing and dancing.
Lucy and John Bubbles do a soft-shoe in “Main Street USA” (TLS S5;E17);
A production number from “Lucy Helps Ken Berry” (TLS S6;E21);
A hobo number with Red Skelton in “Lucy Goes to Alaska” (LDCH 1959);
A soft shoe from “Lucy with George Burns” (TLS S5;E1);
Singing “The Pennsylvania Polka” with Lucie Arnaz and Patty Andrews in “Lucy and the Andrews Sisters” (HL S2;E6);
Tthe big finale from “Lucy Puts Main Street on the Map” (TLS S5;E18);
Playing banjo and singing “Waiting for the Robert E. Lee” with Lucie Arnaz and Wayne Newton, while Desi Jr. plays drums in the background in “Lucy Sells Craig to Wayne Newton” (HL S1;E9).
Tumblr media
A transitional clip from “Lucy Gets Jack Benny's Account” (TLS S6;E6) which ends with Lucy and Benny sinking in a pit of quicksand and leads into...
Tumblr media
THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES
Bob Hope singing his signature song “Thanks for the Memory” with special lyrics about Lucy. A clip of “Lucy and Bob Hope” (ILL S6;E1) has Lucy undercover as a hot dog vendor at Yankee Stadium and Hope getting conked on the head with a fly ball. After the clip, Bob Hope says that the title of world's funniest lady is a tie between Lucille Ball and Milton Berle, which is a cue for a clip from 1958's “Milton Berle Hides Out at the Ricardos” (LDCH 1958) with Milton Berle in full drag as Mildred Burke.
Tumblr media
STAR-STRUCK
Cut to Milton Berle standing in front of the Hollywood Brown Derby to introduce a clip from “Hollywood at Last!” (ILL S4;E16) starring William Holden. The iconic derby-shaped eatery was closed and razed in 1980. The derby dome could be glimpsed in the view from the Ricardo's Hollywood hotel room balcony. In the scene (set in a studio recreation of the restaurant), Lucy can't help but spy on the star in the next booth, ending with her clumsily causing a waiter to dump a tray of food on him.
Tumblr media
BEING UPSTAGED
Johnny Carson, on the set of “The Tonight Show” reminisces about the time he played himself on “Here's Lucy” (S2;E11) where Lucy is picked from his audience to play “Stump the Band” and wins by singing “Snoops the Lawyer.” While she is singing, Carson sits on the arm of an aisle seat occupied by Lucy's real-life mom, Dede Ball.
Tumblr media
A DATE WITH EDDIE
Feldman, that is, not Albert! Dean Martin says he loves working with Lucy. A clip from “Lucy Dates Dean Martin” (TLS S4;E21) has Lucy dating a man she thinks is Dean's stunt double, Eddie Feldman, but is actually Martin himself filling in for Feldman, who has to work. In the clip Martin sings “Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime” causing Lucy Carmichael to remark “You even sing better than he does!”
Tumblr media
SAM THE PLUMBER
Richard Burton comes out of his on-set trailer to talk about his 1970 guest-appearance on “Here's Lucy” (S3;E1) where he tried to pass himself off as Sam the Plumber, but is ensnared by Lucy, who has a leaky sink. He recites Shakespeare while fixing the sink, but Lucy Carter tells him not to quit his day job!
Tumblr media
TWO LEFT FEET
Danny Thomas, is found standing on the set of his 1976 sitcom “The Practice.” A month earlier, Lucille Ball guest-starred on the series, which only lasted one season. He introduces a clip from “Lucy Helps Danny Thomas” (TLS S4;E7), which has Lucy as a clumsy showgirl turning Danny's TV show production number of “Broadway Melody” upside down!
Tumblr media
25 YEARS OF LAUGHTER
The last segment, James Stewart stands at a podium and introduces the lady of the hour (or two), the first lady of television, Lucille Ball. Although Stewart was Ball's friend and neighbor, the two never acted opposite each other on film or television. They appeared together on many award shows and specials. He presents Lucy with a plaque from the National Academy of Arts and Sciences for 25 years of laughter.  A montage of moments from Lucy's quarter-century career is accompanied by the song “Look at that Face” sung by Steve Lawrence as the credits roll.

1963
The biggest news from 1963 was the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy on November 22, which thrust Lyndon B. Johnson into the role of president. The assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald, was murdered two days later by nightclub owner Jack Ruby. This was a difficult time to become president, with the mounting troubles in Vietnam where the Viet Cong Guerrillas had now killed 80 American advisers. The continued campaign for civil rights by the black community caused violent reactions from whites in places such as Mississippi, Virginia, and Alabama, where the black civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested. Films included The Birds and The Great Escape, and popular TV programs The Virginian and Lassie. Women’s fashion and hairstyles included fur boots and towering hairdos for evening wear. In music, it was the beginning of Beatlemania, after the release of Meet the Beatles.

Shameless Season 11 Episode 2 Review: Go Home, Gentrifier!
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
This Shameless review contains spoilers.
Shameless Season 11 Episode 2
“I want some nice things in my life for a change.”
A major hurdle that season ten of Shameless had to work through was not only the loss of Emmy Rossum’s Fiona, but also the idea that some other Gallagher should now take her place as the show’s central protagonist and stabilizing force in the family. Their decision to appoint Debbie to this position did not work in the show’s favor, but season eleven is already off to a strong start by how it’s relegated Debbie back to more of a supporting status. If anything, Shameless’ final season understands that it doesn’t need someone to fill Fiona’s place and that truly showcasing the cast as an ensemble is the strongest way to go out. Lip’s struggles get a little more attention than everything else, but the episode’s reasonably balanced and all the stories are driven by the same economic conflicts and desire for acceptance, whether it’s in a new neighborhood, job, or from a family member.
Right from moment one “Go Home, Gentrifier!” feels more natural than last week’s premiere and the whole episode eases into a very comfortable rhythm. It’s extremely satisfying to see the Gallagher family operate as a unit for large portions of this episode. There’s such infectious chemistry between these characters when they all get to bounce off of each other and Frannie’s fifth birthday operates as a reason for everyone to get together for the bookends of this hour. There’s such an enjoyable energy to these scenes between Gallaghers, but this also extends into how this is genuinely a very funny installment. Longtime Shameless writer Nancy M. Pimental’s script features exceptional dialogue, which helps “Go Home, Gentrifier!” work a lot better than it necessarily should.
There’s a strong sense of comedic timing and joke development through many of the scenes, which helps give mundane scenarios a lot more impact. There’s a great running gag in The Alibi Room about Tony and Kermit’s distance that beautifully develops. On that note, Shameless also deserves credit for turning the strange hookup between Tony and Kermit from the premiere into a legitimate storyline. It felt odd and not necessarily earned when it first happened, but I’m now excited to see where it goes. If this season ends with the two of them in a relationship together I’ll be genuinely happy.
Mickey is often presented as one of the series’ broader characters, but “Go Home, Gentrifier!” makes beautiful use of him and he’s another strong example of this episode’s comedic strength. The fact that a derivative infomercial bullies Mickey into finally getting a job (while he also ignores the point of that infomercial) is actually perfect. His roleplay scenario at his interview is just as good and a testament to how much potential there is to have Mickey out of his element and in a nine-to-five context. Granted, that plan becomes very short-lived, but it opens the door for even more rewarding material between Mickey and Ian over their contrasting strategies to make an income.
Ian and Mickey’s problem becomes representative for many of Shameless’ characters as they all adopt wildly diverse approaches towards economic oppression. It’s worth pointing out that both of the characters with the most conventional jobs are the most frustrated. Carl begins his illustrious career as a South Side police officer and his partner is played by Joshua Malina here who’s in fine form as a deleted character from Grandma’s Boy. Carl’s attitude is incredibly gung ho to get into some real police work, even if he manipulated the system to get this far. Ironically, his partner is the laziest kind of cop that skirts by on the bare minimum and has perfected the art of staying in the background.
It’s an interesting idea to neuter Carl and use the police force to reflect another broken area of Chicago. The premiere hinted that this corruption would be through the police force’s abuses of power, but it’s a more unique turn to have Carl aggravated over the opposite problem. Despite his frustrations, the way in which Carl supports his partner and still finds ways to embody the unity of the police force is really sweet. This camaraderie may inadvertently ruin his partner’s life and solve Carl’s problem in the process, but he only has altruistic intentions here.
Shameless’ biggest weak spots over its past seasons have been its treatment of Frank, Kevin, and V. In Frank’s case, he’s continually paired up with a revolving door of guest stars like Luis Guzman or Katey Segal, only to know that his latest get rich quick scheme will have to come to an end by the season’s close, if not sooner. Kevin and V also continually work through extremely odd jobs that feel like rejected Kramer subplots, most of which are incredibly disconnected from the rest of the series. It shouldn’t have taken Shameless this long to have Frank, Kevin, and V all share a storyline, which easily solves both of those problems.
A story arc where Frank is Kevin and V’s weed connoisseur so that they can get the best possible product also makes a lot of sense for everyone involved. The detail that Frank’s actually a skilled gourmand in the field is the icing on the pot brownie. “Go Home, Gentrifier!” succeeds when it brings these characters together and it already seeds more compelling developments to come as Frank’s worth begins to cause friction in their new business. It’s also a rare situation where Frank is completely on point and fully capable. He doesn’t screw up once in this episode and he even is able to unintentionally read between the lines with Tony and Kermit. If this was someone’s first Shameless episode they’d think Frank is some Heisenberg-esque genius and that’s a fantastic angle for him during this final season. Maybe some Nazis will end up executing Kevin in front of him during one of the series’ final episodes.
Liam also attempts to make some easy money off of food, but his product is completely legal and functions more as a commentary on the depressing state of public schools. Liam has become a real joy over the course of Shameless’ latest seasons and the show lucked out with how Christian Isaiah has turned into such a charismatic performer. This energy often sees Liam turn into an inspirational leader and that’s no different here when he transforms subpar cafeteria food into the opportunity to become a martyr. Forget about Ian’s Gay Jesus and get ready for Liam’s Cafeteria Food Jesus.
Liam’s actions bring him together with his fellow student, but Lip and Tami don’t receive the same warm reception from their community. Lip and Tami’s problems with a neighborhood vandal turns into a deceptively deep story. A lot of characters get pushed out of their comfort zones in this episode and slotted into roles that feel foreign to them, but billing Lip as a gentrifier is by far the most extreme example.
The reasons behind this are crushing in their own way, but Lip is not a character who has fundamentally changed or sold out his values with his new life and house. This turns this episode into more of an examination on false labels and the widespread damage that they can cause. It’s really quite sweet to see Lip side with the greater good and help out his community rather than take pride in the good condition of his new home. In a strange way, the vandalism that adorns his house becomes a badge of courage for how strong Lip’s values really are.
Labels are also crucial when it comes to Debbie’s desire to be viewed as a princess, even in lieu of Frannie’s repeated dismissals of the idea. Her actions over Frannie’s birthday help unpack the episode’s themes in a very different way. “Go Home, Gentrifier!” mildly addresses Debbie’s quarter-life crisis here and that she’s reacting out of anxiety over getting older, but it feels pretty baked into this storyline. It’s Frannie’s birthday, but Debbie is also older and the fact that she has a daughter that’s now five certainly subconsciously contributes to Debbie’s desire to dress up as a princess and hide away in fantasy. The episode simplifies this to some extent, but the deeper implications are still there.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
“Go Home, Gentrifier!” works out any of the kinks present in Shameless’ season premiere as it confidently moves ahead in its final season. This episode is very crowded, which is something that Shameless always struggles with, but all of these storylines feel natural and that they’re contributing to a larger whole. It’s still very early on and it’s possible that none of these plot threads will be relevant by the end of the season, but “Go Home, Gentrifier!” officially has me optimistic for what’s to come and that Shameless can end on a note that’s worthy of its eleven-year run.

September 20 1934
On this day in 1934, Sofia Villani Scicolone, later known to the world as the actress and screen siren Sophia Loren, is born in Rome, Italy. Loren, who was raised in poverty in Naples, rose to become Italy’s most famous film star and an international icon of beauty and glamour.
As a teenager, Sofia began entering beauty contests, and she eventually caught the attention of the Italian movie producer Carlo Ponti (1912-2007). In the early 1950s, Ponti (who later produced Federico Fellini’s 1954 La Strada and 1965’s Doctor Zhivago), started using her for small roles and by the mid-1950s, the dark-haired beauty (now known as Sophia Loren) was a star in Italy. She earned international notice in the 1957 English-language films Boy on a Dolphin, co-starring Alan Ladd, and The Pride and the Passion, co-starring Frank Sinatra and Cary Grant and directed by Stanley Kramer (The Defiant Ones, Judgment at Nuremberg, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner).
In 1957, Loren married the divorced Ponti by proxy in Mexico, which caused a scandal in Italy, a heavily Catholic country where divorce was illegal. Loren continued to make movies in Italy and America, co-starring with a long list of Hollywood’s top leading men. She appeared with Clark Gable in 1960’s It Started in Naples,Peter Sellars in 1960’s The Millionairess and Charlton Heston in 1961’s El Cid. In 1962, Loren won a Best Actress Academy Award for her role as a widowed mother trapped in a love triangle with her teenage daughter in the Italian film Two Women (released in the United States in 1961). Her Oscar win made her the first actress ever to win that honor for a foreign-language film. She was nominated for a second Best Actress Oscar for her performance in Matrimonio all’Italia, or Marriage Italian Style, which co-starred Marcello Mastroianni. Released in the United States in 1964, Marriage Italian Style was also nominated in the category of Best Foreign Language Film. Among Loren’s other film credits in the 1960s were Lady L (1965) with Paul Newman, Arabesque (1966) with Gregory Peck and A Countess from Hong Kong (1967), co-starring Marlon Brando and helmed by Charlie Chaplin in his final time in the director’s chair.
After giving birth to her two sons, Loren stepped back from the spotlight and began acting less frequently. In 1994, she appeared in Robert Altman’s Pret-a-Porter, and in 1995 she was featured in Grumpier Old Men alongside Walter Matthau, Jack Lemmon and Ann-Margret. In 2002, Loren starred in Between Strangers, directed by her younger son, Edoardo Ponti.

Little Women: All the Main Actors and Where You've Seen Them Before
You could say there have been several Little Women adaptations in film and television, and that'd still probably be an understatement. However, there's no hiding our excitement for the new film that's set to come out later this year, in December 2019.
RELATED: Little Women: 10 Things We Need To See In Greta Gerwig's New Adaptation
Directed by Greta Gerwig (director of Lady Bird (2017)), we're more than stoked for this stacked cast and incredibly classic tale. So who will be playing these iconic characters? We thought you should probably know all of the famous faces behind the foursome of sisters, the parents, and the lover boy. So without further ado, here all of the actors and actresses in the new film, and where you've seen them before.
8 Emma Watson
Tumblr media
We'll start off easy, with the beautiful and brilliant Emma Watson. You may recognize this stunning face, and it's likely from the Harry Potter series where she plays Hermione Granger. However, this fierce woman was also Belle in the new live-action of Beauty and the Beast, and played the main gal, Sam, in The Perks of Being a Wallflower.
Emma definitely isn't new to the big screen, and she certainly has more credits to share, but these are our personal favorites that you should check out in preparation for this film. We're excited for her to bring her expertise to the character of one of the four sisters, Meg March.
7 Florence Pugh
Tumblr media
This young woman is relatively new to the big screen, and her first break-out role actually also came this year, when she starred in Midsommar as Dani. This was her first main role, and critics have had nothing but praise for her stunning performance.
RELATED: Midsommar: 10 Hidden Details Everyone Completely Missed
She's been in a few things here and there, but this promising actress will definitely continue to make waves after her role as another one of the sisters, Amy March, in this new film.
6 Laura Dern
Tumblr media
Laura Dern is an expert actress, to be quite frank, and we can't wait to see her embody the character of the mother of these four wild gals, Marmee March. You'll probably remember a younger Laura Dern for her starring role in the Jurassic Park franchise, where she played Ellie.
However, if you're not a dinosaur fan, you can find this bombshell in The Fault in Our Stars as Hazel's mom, or as the brilliant and fiery Renata Klein in HBO's Big Little Lies. Oh yeah, she's also in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Is there anything this woman can't do?
5 Timothée Chalamet
Tumblr media
Honestly, Timothée Chalamet is probably one of the fastest-growing actors of this decade. He took the 2018 Oscars by storm for Lady Bird (where he was directed by Greta Gerwig) and Call Me By Your Name, even receiving a nomination for the latter. In 2019, he received a Golden Globe nominee for Beautiful Boy, where he starred alongside Steve Carell.
RELATED: 10 Movies and TV Shows You Forgot Timothée Chalamet Appears In
While he's officially making waves in Hollywood, this heartthrob has been hitting the big screen since 2014, and we cannot wait to see what he does with the character of Theodore Laurence, Jo's main squeeze. If you love him as much as we do, you can also find him in the upcoming Netflix film The King.
4 Meryl Streep
Tumblr media
We probably don't have to tell you who Meryl Streep is, but we're still excited to see her playing Aunt March. This experienced actress has three Academy Awards to her name, for The Iron Lady (2011), Sophie's Choice (1982), and Kramer vs. Kramer (1979).
Her latest nomination was for The Post (2017), where she starred alongside Tom Hanks. However, her acting career is far from over, and we could spend all day listing her acting credits. So, we'll just say you can also find her in the second season of Big Little Lies (alongside Laura Dern!) where she plays the fierce and manipulative mother-in-law of Nicole Kidman's character. You know all her other films, right? Right.
3 Eliza Scanlen
Tumblr media
This young, Aussie actress is definitely new to the big screen, and she only has a few acting credits under her belt. However, you might, in fact, recognize her as Amma Crellin from Sharp Objects, where she appears in all 8 episodes of the mini-series alongside Amy Adams.
RELATED: 5 Meryl Streep Movies We Wish Had A Sequel (& 5 That Are Perfect On Their Own)
She'll be playing the younger sister, Beth March, in this Little Women remake, and we're sure this young actresses's career will take off from there.
2 Bob Odenkirk
Tumblr media
Bob Odenkirk
Variety Portrait Studio, AFI Fest, Los Angeles, USA - 12 Nov 2017[/caption]
This writer, actor, and producer will be playing Mr. March. As a writer, Odenkirk is the mastermind behind many of your favorite talk-shows, including Saturday Night Live, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, and the Jenny McCarthy Show.
On the other side of the camera, you might recognize this man from Breaking Bad (as Saul Goodman), Fargo (as Bill Oswalt), Better Call Saul (as Jimmy McGill), or even alongside Meryl Streep in The Post (2017). This guy is definitely no newbie, and we expect he has a lot to offer to this incredible role.
1 Saoirse Ronan
Tumblr media
Saoirse is another one of our absolutely favorite upcoming and young actresses of this generation. Born to Irish parents, this hilarious and relatable woman slays us on AND off the big screen. She'll be our leading lady (and main sister), Jo March, in this new film. Where have you seen her before? She starred in Brooklyn in 2015, which was arguably her break-out role in Hollywood.
She also found herself at the 2018 Oscars alongside her main squeeze of this film, Timothée Chalamet, when she played the main role in Lady Bird. (Therefore, this actress has also been directed by Greta Gerwig before. Clearly, Gerwig loved these two.) Most recently, however, this brilliant woman starred alongside Margot Robbie in Mary Queen of Scots. Honestly, all of these films are critically acclaimed, and you should DEFINITELY watch every single one of them.

About the author: Francis DiClemente lives in Syracuse, New York. His previous full-length collection, Sidewalk Stories, was published by Kelsay Books in 2017. His stage play Beyond the Glass, inspired by Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks, was produced by a regional theater in Las Vegas, Nevada, in 2017. His blog can be found at francisdiclemente.com.
ADVANCE PRAISE FOR Dreaming of Lemon Trees: Selected Poems by Francis DiClemente
In Dreaming of Lemon Trees, poet Francis DiClemente has given us a retrospective of his deeply affecting poems from three earlier books. The power of the selected works presented here resides in DiClemente’s no-holds-barred vision of life. He gives us people—himself, his family, even strangers—with such vivid language that we know them. And we care about them—a pregnant bridesmaid, a mother at a school bus stop, Mr. Brown in the park and of course, the poet himself. Place, too, feels like a character in this collection. Located mostly in the rust belt of upstate New York, the reader is reminded of William Kennedy’s Ironweed, with its cold wind and grit. Again, DiClemente’s skill with incisive, descriptive language gives the collection a filmic quality, allowing us to see what he sees, feel what he feels. These poems are full of intense emotion, but with their sharp vision and language, they are never sentimental. This is a collection of note.
–Kathleen Kramer, poet and playwright
Poet Francis DiClemente covers a lot of ground in this deeply affecting collection: love, loss, family and religion. Dreaming of Lemon Trees is a study in contrast—selected poems that address life’s duality and the pain and suffering that often accompany it. Issues of self-worth figure prominently in these poems, owing to a pituitary tumor that DiClemente suffered during adolescence, hindering his “normal progression” and sending any sense of normalcy into a tailspin. Yet this self-described “modern Prodigal Son” does not bemoan his fate as much as he contemplates it. Like most confessional poetry, DiClemente’s is unflinchingly honest and at times autumnal; it also is funny and beautiful. He flirts with rhythm and meter, but not at the expense of telling a good story. In the tradition of Charles Bukowksi, DiClemente takes American lowlife poetry to new heights, and shows us there can be redemption through chaos.
–Rob Enslin, journalist and author
Francis DiClemente’s Dreaming of Lemon Trees brings together poems from three previous collections, poems of keen perception and introspection, of solitude and yearning. Throughout, the flavor and texture of DiClemente’s central New York home carry through—from old movie theaters to the “cavernous darkness” of basement poker clubs, from backyards to strip malls to a stadium’s “small town pride.” In many of the most moving poems here, DiClemente explores his experiences with a pituitary deficiency that significantly delayed puberty and kept him “like a boy wrapped in toddler’s clothes.” The exploration of masculinity in these pieces is brave, frank and necessary. “My dreams are reasonable,” he writes in one poem, “I just want the man to sneak out … to unveil his beauty like a sunset extended …” And here, he does just that.
