CDC finally fuckin' recommended the new COVID boosters for everyone in the US. letting my american followers who don't check the news know because i've been turned away for wanting to get an extra booster & now won't be anymore & it's Lovely. most americans are not going to get these and are going to grumble about them, which sucks as far as spread goes - but DOES mean u can schedule with ur local pharmacy sooner rather than later. please do so. ur immunocompromised friends and ur own body will thank u.
#coronavirus#covid#we're all gonna catch covid like the common cold for the next several decades#PLEASE get as protected as u can in the face of that reality.#it's not worth becoming disabled or further disabling/killing ur disabled friends and family members.#autoimmune tag

Mucus Buster
Everyone's got lingering congestion this year, so as someone who's no stranger to phlegm, and inherited the folk wisdom of a stage actress (the show must go on!) I share with you my recipe for making things better:
2L water
the juice and rind of one lemon (just dump the juiced rinds in, don't zest them, you maniac)
a small thumb of fresh ginger, sliced in coins
about a dozen cloves, some star anise, peppercorns, and maybe whole cinnamon or allspice or whatever else you like, in a tea ball (except the cinnamon if it doesn't fit, obvs)
good dollop of honey, to taste
Bring the water to a boil then dump in all the stuff. Keep it hot but not boiling – a slow cooker is good for this. Keep this pot on a low heat all day and serve yourself a mug every so often, adding water as necessary. At some point you will need to add a new lemon and some more honey, but the spices can generally carry over two pots if you're drinking it regularly.
The acid helps clear the gunk, ginger is good for the circulation, and clove/aniseed/pepper have some sort of decongestant/soothing properties. Honey is both nice and antiseptic, and apparently is a cough suppressant as well? Anyway, I just got over another run of Covid and this was wasn't 100% effective but it worked better than phenylephrine.

Cat in the Hat:
"The German Health Minister gave an important update on the Covid situation yesterday.
I’ve written up the section of his speech from the video below for easy reading.
It’s immensely refreshing to see a government minister warning of the harms of Covid in such a transparent way."
https://x.com/_catinthehat/status/1732092683508678954
Prof. Karl Lauterbach
Health Minister, Germany
4 December 2023
"This second (long Covid) round table was very interesting, lasting three and a half hours. It serves as a unique forum for dialogue among scientists, researchers and those affected by long Covid, facilitating the exchange of ideas.
There are many new findings about long Covid. Not all of them are good news. One piece of not-so-good news concerns the fact that long Covid is actually still a problem for those who are newly infected. One estimate that has been put forward is that the risk of contracting long Covid now, even after vaccination, is around 3%. Now you may say, "that's not such a big risk" , but there are tens of thousands of people who are repeatedly affected in a short period of time. And so, the long Covid problem has not yet been solved.
We have also established that there really are many subgroups of long Covid and that we do not yet have a cure. And it was clearly pointed out that we are also dealing with problems here that will challenge society as a whole, because vascular diseases often occur after long Covid. Throughout Europe, we are currently seeing an increased incidence of cardiovascular disease in the middle-age group - from 25 to 50. This is associated with the consequences of Covid infections.
We also very often find cognitive impairment in older people. And one participant pointed out that it may well be like the Spanish flu, where 20 years after the Spanish flu there was a significant increase in Parkinson's disease and probably also dementia.
This is something we must pay attention to, as the past infection afiects how the immune system in the brain functions, as well as the brain's blood vessels, potentially increasing the long-term risk of these major neurodegenerative diseases. This is why we need to conduct very intensive research. This research has played a major role.
What is the overall assessment of the situation now?
We have to be careful. Long Covid is not curable at the moment. We also know that over 40% of those who have several manifestations of long Covid, for example, five or more, still have symptoms after 2 years, so it doesn't seem to heal spontaneously. We also know that those whose symptoms are more pronounced at the beginning are less likely to heal.
So some of what we know from the demographics of long Covid has been confirmed, and we now know more precisely which mechanisms in the brain, but also in the blood vessels and the immune system, are responsible for this. Professor Scheibenbogan will explain this briefly later.
At this point, I can only say the following - this is particularly important to me:
First of all, long Covid is a disease that stays with us and that we cannot yet cure. And we are seeing an increasing number of cases as the waves of infection continue to affect us.
Secondly, Covid is not a cold - with a cold, you don't usually see any long-term effects. You don't see any changes in the blood vessels. You don't usually see an autoimmune disease developing. You also don't usually see neurological inflammation - these are all things that we see with long Covid. Therefore, one should not assume that Covid infection is just a common cold. It can affect brain tissue and the vascular system, and we still lack an effective treatment, making these studies crucial.
Significantly, we know that the risk of long Covid decreases when you're infected but have been vaccinated. That's why it's concerning that only 3 million people have been vaccinated with the new, adapted vaccine. That is a very bad result.
Please protect yourself from severe infections.
Please protect yourself from long Covid.
Currently, the danger posed by Covid is indeed being underestimated. Nothing is worse than infecting someone at Christmas who then becomes seriously ill and may not fully recover."

No one should be fooled into thinking that COVID-19 no longer matters. Research efforts on COVD-19’s delayed health effects continue. Its expanding list now includes a higher risk of type 2 diabetes, lower cognition, higher rates of anxiety and depression, and a two to three-fold increased risk of heart attack and stroke.
These delayed health risks resulted in an estimated 90,500 excess deaths in 2023. That’s over 11 times what the Public Health Agency of Canada had reported over the same period and more than 45 times the deaths from motor vehicle accidents in Canada during the same year.
Such profound harms should have galvanized Ontario into ramping up testing, prevention and transmission of SARS CoV-2. Instead, the opposite happened: Rather than educate the public on its delayed health consequences, Ontario continued to fixate on only its immediate hospitalizations and deaths.

I’m so tired and conflicted. My mother in law is visiting us. She got off the plane, nose streaming insisting it was just allergies. She masked on the plane at our request. When I heard her congestion levels I immediately masked in the car but my wife didn’t.
We had a very slightly expired covid test that came back negative but she also said antihistamines hadn’t reduced her symptoms at all. My wife has gotten exposure and is asking if I feel safe sleeping in bed with them and I am too tired to make decisions but every time we’ve visited people we’ve gotten sick. They always say something is no big deal and we end up sick.
I’m graduating Sunday and I’m gonna be a huge bummer to everyone if I ask for masking protocols until Sunday so I can graduate without worrying about illness. I don’t know what the right call is and I hate it.
Edit: my wife is gonna sleep masked but I do feel reassured that this is allergies based on what they’re saying. If their mom is feeling better tomorrow that’d be great too but I think I’ll feel less frantic in the morning

its 4am, my entire body aches something severe and i cannot sleep because of it, and i cannot tell if this is just because of the cold or something when i have heating pads and arson or if i possibly caught something sickly while air traveling two days ago
the entire skeleton feels like it's achey but oh my god my lower back and legs
#it feels like a slightly less intensive version of when i had covid that took away my ability to walk for a while#which makes me think if its something sickly then it could be a cold or flu and ill be fine in a week prob#or shorter which i can handle#i can be sick for christmas but if im sick for friend birthday im showing up in a hazmat suit LKGDGDSLG#sara shush#medical
