HELLO AND WELCOME TO PROFESSOR VAATI’S UNSCHEDULED LECTURES

@willowthearts wanted some knowledge and i wanted to train some perspective!

Btw i’m not a pro (LIKE NOT EVEN CLOSE)

Basically i just wanted to repeat that perspective is IMPERATIVE to understanding backgrounds! Sure not ALL backgrounds require precise perspective but knowing the basics is super important to be able to create believable spaces!

The first rule of perspective, and something many students don’t understand, is where to place the HORIZON. This was one of the hardest concepts to internalize for me, the horizon is always present and seems unreachable but it’s the foundation of all perspective!

To the observer the horizon line stays flat BUT it’s height changes with the elevation of the observer! The horizon is ALWAYS present and ALWAYS "flat" (perpendicular to gravity/down).

When drawing in perspective all the vanishing points* we use ALWAYS fall on the horizon line

*Not all of them but it's easier to conceptualize it that way!

Exemples

Up next are 2 scenes with the same objects. These are drawn using 1 vanishing point in the center. The first one’s "camera" is at the same height as the characters’ nose the second exemple has the camera at the height of the lower legs. That is the only difference! The camera stays perfectly level!

When working in perpective all the objects that appear above the horizon are seen from bellow and the ones that appear bellow are seen from above (you can only SEE the top surface and not the bottom surface).

All basic shapes can usually be simplified to boxes and squares that are MUCH easier to draw correctly in perpective!

I might make another one of these lessons for posing and dynamic character design but it's getting late for me ~_~

Study absolutely EVERY SINGLE IMAGE YOU SEE!

Architecture holds all kinds of perspectives, you just have to look and try to find where the horizon is and where all the vanishing points go! (Covento de mafra, 3 point perspective)

Any piece of media! Study its secrets!! (Berserk, low horizon)

(Dandadan, high horizon with curved perspective lines! Dandadan goes Ultra hard in terms of spectacular uses of perspective!)

Ainda na história da aviação

Em 1709, o Padre Bartolomeu de Gusmão (1685-1724), nascido em Santos, no Brasil, viaja para Lisboa, onde pede uma “petição de privilégio” para um “instrumento para se andar pelo ar”. Esta petição, que nos nossos dias designamos como um “pedido de patente”, referia-se a uma estrutura que, no seu conjunto, era mais leve que o ar, permitindo, de acordo com o princípio de Arquimedes, subir verticalmente ou navegar a uma altura constante do solo, aquilo que hoje designamos como balão ou aeróstato. Esta petição é-lhe concedida a 19 de abril.

Em agosto desse ano, Bartolomeu de Gusmão faz, perante a corte portuguesa, cinco experiências com balões de pequenas dimensões por ele construídos:

Dia 3 - Primeira experiência, realizada na Casa do Forte (Palácio Real): o aeróstato incendeia-se antes de subir;

Dia 5 - Segunda experiência, realizada na Casa Real (Palácio Real): o balão, tendo no fundo uma tijela com álcool em combustão, incendeia-se a 4 metros de altura;

Dia 6 - Terceira experiência, realizada na Casa do Forte (Palácio Real): o aeróstato, contendo no seu interior uma vela acesa, realiza um curto voo mas queima-se ao poisar;

Dia 7 – Quarta experiência, realizada no Terreiro do Paço: o balão eleva-se a grande altitude, poisando, minutos depois, com toda a suavidade;

Dia 8 – Quinta experiência, realizada na Sala de Audiências (Palácio Real): o aeróstato sobe até ao teto, onde permanece alguns minutos, descendo, de seguida, suavemente.

A notícia deste invento rapidamente se espalha pela Europa, passando a ser retratado em gravuras fantasiosas como uma barca em forma de pássaro. É destes desenhos que advém o nome pelo qual ficará conhecido: Passarola.

About Tracks and Covens

           Looking at a younger Principal Bump, it’s a bit tricky to see what track he’s in. The colors have me inclined to say either Yellow or Orange; It’s hard to say for sure because of the filter placed over the photo to really accomplish that ‘back in the old days’ effect… Which when you consider that Bump has three-hundred years until retirement, implies that he is VERY old…!

           Orange for Beastkeeping makes sense- It would fit with that thing Bump is wearing on his head (which was alive back when Eda was a child, implying that it was alive when he wore it in this photo… unless it’s a different creature), but Yellow for Potions is also possible! It’s also funny because given how he chose Potions for Luz (and possibly Eda), the implication would be that Bump is biased towards his old track!

           Alas, however… comparing Bump’s sleeves to the cyclops on the left, THAT kid seems to be having yellow sleeves; And given how his sleeves are lighter than Bump’s, I think it’s safe to say that Bump was a Beast Keeper!

           Obviously that’s fascinating, because as a Principal… He also has access to Abomination Magic. Did he switch tracks, and that’s why he’s willing to make changes to the rules- Because he has personal experience for his criticisms on the Coven System? Or is the position of Principal (and how one needs to overlook the education of students from ALL tracks) enable one to perform multiple forms of magic? We know that as a Principal, Bump has some connection to the Emperor’s Coven- Likely through funding, but it’s implied by The First Day that even if the EC doesn’t choose to fund Hexside, the school can still operate, albeit at a disadvantage.

           (Which makes me wonder if that stole that Bump is wearing is basically an official ‘seal of approval’ for schools that meet the standards required to get the Emperor’s Coven’s sponsorship.)

           If Bump were to fully lose support from the Emperor’s Coven, would this mean he’d be restricted to one form of magic? It’s worth nothing that the EC is the only ‘coven’ to have access to all forms of magic… As a principal, does Bump have access to multiple forms of magic, but not all of them? Or does the specific wording mean that Principals can use all forms of magic, but it’s stil the EC that’s the only Covento practice all magic? Thus, specific individuals not affiliated with each other can be another exception, albeit not as their own separate Coven.

           …Actually, rewatching Covention, I don’t think anyone ever explicitly says that only the Emperor’s Coven has access to all forms of magic- Just that they do! So that means it’s possible that there are other Covens who have access to all magic, but it’s likely that such groups are very far and few-between, and require vigorous testing to prove one’s worth. The Emperor’s Coven could potentially be easier to join than a ‘Principal Coven’, or just be seen as more glamorous.

I can see Belos restricting the EC for only the best, but still leaving it open enough that he has a good number of enforcers. Whereas with school Principals, he can afford to be pickier on the requirements because he doesn’t need as many of them- Especially since we know that some Principals are probably long-lived (i.e. Bump), and don’t have to worry about losing their lives while enforcing the law.

…HOWEVER, we need to remember something- The Tracks may not always have been the same! We see that in Eda’s time, there were colors that don’t exist now, which poses many possibilities. Perhaps the nine Tracks had different colors back then? Or Hexside offered Tracks on the other, less important Covens, before focusing specifically on the nine main ones… Perhaps because of less funding, or Belos making a change in designated curriculum! For all we know, the nine main covens (and their corresponding tracks) may have even been different from the ones we know today, with some forms of magic classified underneath one track in the past, or vice-versa!

And this was back in Eda’s day- Presumably within a few decades. We can guess that she’s at least thirty, and younger than she looks no less… But Bump? If his line of having onlythree-hundred years of retirement is any indication, then he is VERY long-lived! Which indicates that the time between him establishing Hexside’s foundations, and today, is likely MUCH longer than three centuries!

In the photo we see, Hexside wasn’t even built yet either! Who knows how much has changed in the past, how old the Coven System is… What it was like back then, if rules have been progressively getting stricter as the Coven System becomes more incorporated into society, etc.! So while the possibility of there being OTHER covens that practice multiple forms of magic (and maybe even all of them) exists, I’m not sure how much we can definitively say about Principal Bump himself! Just when I thought we had his past Track pinned down, this possibility comes up…

I swear, I’ve got a million questions for Dana’s potential Reddit AMA after the Season 1 Finale, and it’s going to be a trip deciding which ones to ask, and seeing if they even get answered! And that’s just the LORE questions, and not the ones related to the experience of making the show itself, Dana’s personal thoughts and feelings on some things, etc.!
