The King and The Tiger.
saw their pairing from one tweet; made this render as an agreement. "Körangi" is legitimately one of the best partner names i've heard. "König" meaning "king" in German and "Horangi" meaning "Tiger" in Korean. absolute genius, i tell you.

if any filmmakers follow me for god's sake if you are on a project and you have control over this: get a good DIT. get a DIT with editing experience. get a DIT who knows how to create consistent and intuitive file structures and for the sanity of your editor(s) get a DIT who will do things right the first time so your editors won't have to redo all of that work because it was disorganized and done so badly they have to, for example, resync all the clips for an entire feature film because the proxies weren't set up properly
#cricket chirps#not related to anything specific of course not nope definitely not gonna have to relink proxies to 40TB of original media then resync it al#cricket creates blog#<- i can't decide on a tag for just when i talk about filmmaking or whatever. sigh

Unfortunately for you guys, I just started the paper my foolish professor let me write about studious deracination in James Cameron’s Avatar, so get ready for some some academic posts to start trickling in. Here is a more detailed post of the tiktok I made.
Today we are going to talk about race as an allegory in Avatar again!!! Avatar (2009) is a pretty blatant representation of indigenous peoples on Earth being colonized. Like, I don’t think anyone disputes that. But why do this and not make a movie about colonization?? Why make them aliens??
By separating these things from our real world, our real history, things we may have bias about, we can view it from a completely fresh lens. There's a deliberate choice to present a different planet and a different species and in that way, they have that allegory for colonization, for racism, for the destruction of our planet, be more evident and sympathetic to everyone viewing it as an example of our planet and these real-world things that are happening. Sometimes it’s easier to approach these issues when you don’t feel like they are targeting you.
However, I feel like there's an interesting, perhaps not intentional, thing that James Cameron did as well with the second movie and that is addressing colorism. I read a lot of your fanfictions, okay, I read ‘em. Every time they're set in the modern era and our main characters are human there is a conscious choice to have Jake Sully's biological children Tuk and Neteyam be darker skinned, and to have Lo’ak be lighter skinned. We are all picking up on something that is implied in the narrative that I don't think anyone intended to be there. I don’t wanna give James Cameron too much credit in that regard. Let’s talk about that phenomenon.
So this is studiously deracinating something, it’s a narrative strategy defined by an evacuated racial consciousness that ironizes assumptions of white universalism and uncritical postracialism. So what does that mean? That means by taking race out of the equation in something, the concept of race, it allows you to analyze the same concepts in more of an unbiased way, just as stated above with the first Avatar. It allows you to kind of look at yourself as well, your own biases and how they come into play while you’re reading or watching something. You are fully unaffected by the concept of race in the novel and are more so affected by your own assumptions.
I think there’s such an interesting example of this in Avatar because of the way we have been perceiving Lo’ak and his outcast status in this movie and the way I’ve seen so many people perceive him as lighter skinned than his siblings. He has more traditionally human features compared to the other Na’vi, and this sets him apart and he is treated differently. I think so many people connect with him without fully realizing why. In Avatar we know that the Na’vi represent the indigenous and people of color, while the humans represent colonizers, majority white people. We take the colorism step without even thinking about it, our own assumptions and biases take us there. Just a thought. :)
#i'll prob make a follow up post with books and movies and stuff centered around studious deracination texts written and intentionally used#by authors of filmmakers of color#because of course the point of avatar as james cameron and jon laundau have stated#is to elevate these voices#but ur welcome for this insight into my next paper#i hope maia regrets letting me do it#lo'ak sully#jake sully#neteyam sully#tuktirey sully#neytiri sully#james cameron#avatar#avatar the way of water#james cameron avatar#melissas academic bullshit#melissa og#melissa on avatar (cameron)#melissa is an english major

Gael García Bernal in También la lluvia (2010, dir. Icíar Bollaín)
(these gifs also feature Luis Tosar and the back of Cassandra Ciangherotti's head)
Gifs are all 540px wide so you can click to see larger.
[other gael filmography gifsets]
#gael garcía bernal#también la lluvia#ggb filmography gifs#gael garcia bernal#this is luis tosar (and juan carlos aduviri)'s film really (although gael has lots of screen time and second billing)#just in terms of who gets the biggest character arcs#touches on racism / colonialism / what narratives survive in history / impact of imf and world bank / employment relations and ethics#filmmaking / creative obsession / idealism vs. pragmatism vs. actual human relationships#plus water rights and grassroots protests obviously#there is an interesting interview on youtube with icíar bollaín#obviously when you're making a film that deals with the ethics of filmmaking there are certain expectations#also the very first version of the screenplay years earlier was for the film that they are shooting within this film#and then the stuff about bolivia and about shooting the film got added later in subsequent iterations of the script#side note i love how the film they are making plays out in sebastián's head when he's reading the script or shooting individual setups#of course this took $5.8 million at the box office while letters to juliet took $80 million#no one ever said life was fair#not that i'm still bitter about letters to juliet#(i am totally still bitter about letters to juliet)

your cousin from florida who works in marketing (your dads age. she’s not my age) will come stay the night at your house and it will literally become Bother The Recent College Graduate About Career Prospects Night. i don’t mean to be rude but i am literally going to hide in my room for the rest of the night like peace and love but the next person who asks me what i want to do will be getting strangled
#and the thing is she’s rich and thinks her 13 year old gay son is the messiah#so of course he’s a filmmaking prodigy because he edits little videos on his ipad#sorry to my little 13 year old cousin. i love him dearly. we don’t know for sure that he’s gay. but i know. sorry again to him

happy sleepover saturday!!!!! if you could only ever watch one of these for the rest of your life would it be sexy oklahoma or don giovanni (i think it's. aioux? production? your special one, you know)
also!! here is spitfire & the girls
A CRUEL AND VICIOUS CHOICE. they are like two sides of the same coin to me.... Well considering i am literally watching the latter right now,
also OMG what fantastic beasts!! Girls Night
[ask meme]
#the dramaturgical parallels between don giovanni and oklahoma have gone unexplored for TOO LONG#also you have to introduce me to the gerbils they are new beasties to me#i like that they are all always in a pile. like the weird sisters from macbeth#ask meme#sleepover saturday#sasha answers#domesticatedanimals#ty jack beloved <3 <3#living up to your url tonight lol#in more seriousness it's a very tough choice bc both are so heavily dependent on the cast to me#and the Experience of watching#bc sexy oklahoma in its Prime Form to me was broadway with the immersive thrust stage and the cast#it suffered a bit in the move to touring (although the differences were juicy to chew on)#meanwhile the aix don g i've of course only ever seen the videos not live#(gd. if i'd seen this thing live LOL)#and the 2017 aix video not only has an Amazing cast but literally the most gorgeous and effective filmmaking i've seen in an opera recordin#it's just gorgeous to watch. so well lit and shot and edited...#AND there's actually a replica/revival production of this staging out of. barcelona i think it was? somewhere in spain.#with a different cast as well as Much simpler (and. worse) camera and editing work#and it's Also on youtube haha#and. ngl! it kind of sucks! at least in comparison to the grand high that is 2017 aix lol#it's just so much flatter and blander. which is so interesting to me because i think the staging itself is SO good#but the effect doesn't hit right without the right cast...and in video without good camerawork#so it's Really hard to choose one or the other for me lol

i know we're in tour mode, but i wonder if anyone else thinks way too much about taylor's obsession with legacy in entertainment and the culture, and then her choice to buy and restore the goldwyn estate in LA... like i think about that A LOT. and the fact that she immediately submitted it for landmark status and put millions of dollars into restoring it like hmmmmmm very rich woman needed a hobby but also psychologically revealing in a way. inch resting to say the least
#not to like psychoanalyze her cuz like lol#but it's just a choice that i'm like huh suggests a few things going on here that i find interesting to think about#her oscar bids over the years#her new direction of getting into filmmaking and how she apparently always wanted to#there's a bit of like maybe the greatest form of artistic legacy is film to her#the most prestigious which is HILARIOUS that she may think that because#we all only think that cuz of the oscars and the oscars only started to suppress unions and#fix the PR nightmare that was the working conditions and debauchery of the golden age of hollywood like aldkfjaldskfjadkf#idk it's giving howard hughs a little but of course minus you know#all that stuff#but plus the secret gay rumors i mean! lots to think about#NOT SAYING ANYTHING just like drawing parallels in my brain filled with film school history shit that's ingrained in there#don't be weird tho i don't wanna delve further into this like we're not gonna psychoanalyze her on tumblr dot com

ok. hear me out, you know the scene in the piece your animating, the scar and grian one that goes across multiple seasons. the scene whee its grians wings posed dramatic and angsty, lingering shot over scars dead body, right before moving to scar and the camel in season five? Hear me out.
move it down just a little bit , or up, I think that if you have the very wing tips reaching the top line when you use the rule of thirds would further draw the eye.
I've done three semester on filmmaking and one of the things that help dramatiasize a scene is to have something end right on those third lines, trust me here, just, move it a littttttle bit down, having more sky above it might be fun to add somthing small, a very translucent scar looking down perhaps?
It took me so long to quite figure out what you're saying but I think I get it and I think you are right, I will look into it and see if I can adjust the framing a bit if it's not too much work. I'm not adding anything to the sky simply because my artistic ability is lacking and I would probably make it look really stupid lol. Thanks so much for the tip!! I really just yolo my way through animation past basic principles but I would love to study more filmmaking etc myself for stuff like this
#I did take a filmmaking course in high school so really I should have had more foresight there haha#thank you kind anon#much appreciated!#blabber
