Thirteen witches. Two ordinary sisters. One locked-room murder. This whodunit is giving Knives Out meets The Inheritance Games with magic.
An eccentric old woman approaches sisters Ruby and Wren with an offer too good to pass up: attend a fancy dinner party posing as her granddaughters for two grand each. Sounds like a great arrangement—what could possibly go wrong? Literally EVERYTHING!
Shortly after arriving at the mysterious Hegemony Manor, the hostess is dead and a killer lies among the dinner guests. Did we mention the guests are all powerful witches? Ruby and Wren must solve the murder if they hope to make it out of the manor alive.

The Good Sister
This thriller by Sally Hepworth was fantastic. I really enjoyed this book - zipped right through it! Unreliable narratives in a thriller like this is absolute perfection! I loved Wally and Fern and Rose, they are such interesting characters, each which reflect a different aspect of each other in such interesting ways. With Rose's diary and Fern's direct narrative, a tangled web is slowly revealed and the messy relationship between sisters is brought to light.

A darkly funny domestic horror novel about a woman who must take drastic measures to save her husband and herself from the vengeful ghost of her mother-in-law. When Ralph and Abby Lamb move in with Ralph’s mother, Laura, Abby hopes it’s just what she and her mother-in-law need to finally connect. After a traumatic childhood, Abby is desperate for a mother figure, especially now that she and Ralph are trying to become parents themselves. Abby just has so much love to give—to Ralph, to Laura, and to Mrs. Bondy, her favorite resident at the long-term care home where she works. But Laura isn’t interested in bonding with her daughter-in-law. She’s venomous and cruel, especially to Abby, and life with her is hellish. When Laura takes her own life, her ghost haunts Abby and Ralph in very different ways: Ralph is plunged into depression, and Abby is terrorized by a force intent on destroying everything she loves. To make matters worse, Mrs. Bondy’s daughter is threatening to move Mrs. Bondy from the home, leaving Abby totally alone. With everything on the line, Abby comes up with a chilling plan that will allow her to keep Mrs. Bondy, rescue Ralph from his tortured mind, and break Laura's hold on the family for good. All it requires is a little ingenuity, a lot of determination, and a unique recipe for chicken à la king…

Compound Fracture by Andrew Joseph White
Tumblr media
4.5 stars
This book was fantastically gruesome. Something I noticed and really liked was how Dallas and Cooper represented two different viewpoints on how to improve the world- Cooper reminded me of leftists who kind of want the 'glorious revolution,' while Dallas reminded me of the leftist idealists that are more about improving the world in small, complex ways. Similarly to this, I appreciated how this book had more nuanced takes than I expected (especially around Paul). Obviously, because it's a 300 page YA thriller, not every subject gets the same amount of nuance and detail, but that's kind of to be expected. While I was reading it, I kind of felt like the ending was a little overly idealistic, but now that it's been a few days I  think it's probable that a lot happened off screen because the community organizing was more of Dallas's storyline than Miles's. I thought as a thriller this was well-written and I liked how the book dealt with family and legacy in a really compelling way. Also as an aro person I really appreciate the use of the word in the actual book, I got so excited when I read that.
If you like books about a family legacy haunting the main character, this could be the book for you. Also if you: want to read more diverse books set in Appalachian areas, think YA that isn't scared of political issues would be a fun read, or if you just want a thriller where everything gets intense but things end up alright at the end.
