Under the Mistletoe Collection with stories from Ali Hazelwood, Tessa Bailey, Alexandra Bellefleur, and Alexis Daria
Cruel Winter with You by Ali Hazelwood, 4 stars– lots of emotions and angst here, but some really cute moments too
Merry Ever After by Tessa Bailey, 5 stars – oh wow, the heat that radiated off the pages between these two, shy, vulnerable people, it was scorching!
All By My Elf by Olivia Dade, 1 star – I got confused by the tense and who was who almost immediately and skimmed the story because of that
Merriment and Mayhem by Alexandra Bellefleur, 4 stars – a cute romcom with a firefighter and a bad luck heroine
Only Santas in the Building by Alexis Daria, 3 stars – cute story about neighbours who keep having miscommunication problems

Cirsium vulgare (bull thistle) and Bombus (bumble bee)
Neonicotinoids
Insecticides in general, have a bad history and many, like DDT, have been banned over the years. The problem is that you can't produce insecticides to kill one type of insect that doesn't kill other insects, like bumble bees for instance. In the mid-1970s a new class of insecticide was introduced called neonicotinoids, synthetic versions of nicotine. Neonicotinoids block open an insect's nerve receptors, causing brain damage, and are neurotoxic in unbelievably tiny amounts. A single gram could conceivably kill 250 million honey bees.
This type of pesticide was enormously popular with farmers but commercial bee hive operators started to report significant problems. Studies on bumble bees showed that they easily became lost and failed to find their way back to the nest. Bumble bee nests that had formerly produced thirteen new queens a year had fallen to just two or three. In addition, these chemicals persist in the soil for ten years, partly explaining the current Bumble Bee Crisis.
Neonicotinoids have been banned in the European Union since 2018 and tightly controlled in many other countries (for example: farmers are not allowed to use them on fruit trees or commercial crops while they are in flower). However they are still the most widely used insecticides in the world. In 2023, California joined ten other US states restricting their commercial use and over-the-counter sales for household use will stop in 2025. Of course, these restrictions are just preliminary steps and are being vigorously opposed by the companies that make them and their political allies.

I greatly admire Suzanne Collins goal to never explain any of her stories. She just drops them and goes.

The funniest thing about Ambessa in her book is that by the end she's so excited by the idea of what Rell and Mel could accomplish together as mages and leaders of the clan, and yet everything Ambessa does poisons the well between those two. Ambessa showing such clear favor to Rell over Mel, clearly upset Mel in a way that was obvious to everyone who knew her. Even people who weren't directly involved in the daily Medarda drama, like Rudo, could see what a slap in the face it was to Mel.
Meanwhile you've got Ambessa grooming Rell for a leadership and exposing her to the brutality of the battlefield (that even her parents who put her in the gladiator pits didn't want), all the while she's incredibly ambiguous about Rell's place in the Medarda Clan. Sure Ambessa said she told Rell she'd adopt her, but she never explicitly said how Rell was supposed to help "lead this family to glory". And that's because Ambessa didn't actually know who she wanted as heir, she'd cycled between Rell as the leader, Rell as Mel's #2 (like her and Rictus), and Rell and Mel as co-leaders.
The big punchline for it all is that while Ambessa's inner monologue goes on and on about how powerful those two would be together, Mel and Rell's respective POV chapters are clearly indicating the conflict those two are headed for. For example, when Ambessa was taunted by Gintara that no one would (or could, a dig at her kids) avenge Ambessa's death, Rell privately tells her she would. That statement nearly made Ambessa cry, but we all know that Mel KILLED AMBESSA!!!
This family is cursed.

There was so much I loved about these characters! Alessia was so strong, knew herself, and when confronted, doesn’t back down. Matteo is so determined and loyal, and once he makes up his mind, there is no changing it. These two clash, and that just makes the sparks and chemistry between them all the hotter. It only stands to reason that there will be bumps in their road, but once they work things out, they are so solid <3

I read another few chapters of "Drawn to Life" which I started some months ago and got an instant motivation boost to draw! There's some amazing advice in there which I need to remind myself constantly of. The book is about drawing for animation but it applies to all pose drawings. Here's one tip:
When you're pose drawing, don't think of the object you're drawing as a 'noun' but as a 'verb'. You're not only drawing a person, but a person reading smth, a person looking at smth, etc! Also you can add adverbs that further describe HOW the person is doing that, which adds extra life and movement.
