The population of giant pandas in the wild has nearly doubled as China steps up its conservation efforts.
China’s National Forestry and Grassland Administration said on Jan 25 there are now around 1,900 pandas in the wild from some 1,100 in the 1980s.
This has been due to China’s efforts to protect the species, considered a national treasure, said Mr Zhang Yue, an official with the administration.
The Giant Panda National Park was established in October 2021, covering a total area of over 22,000 sq km and providing a home to around 72 per cent of the wild giant panda population.
Protected areas for giant pandas have grown from 1.39 million ha to 2.58 million ha since 2012.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature has adjusted the status of giant pandas from “endangered” to “vulnerable”.
“This indicates that China’s giant panda conservation efforts have been recognised by the international wildlife conservation community,” Mr Zhang said.
The global captive population of giant pandas, meanwhile, has now reached 728, with 46 pandas successfully bred in captivity in 2023.
The genetic diversity of captive giant pandas has also improved. The current captive population of giant pandas can maintain 90 per cent genetic diversity for up to 200 years.
As for giant pandas living abroad, Mr Zhang said China has organised field inspections and assessments of 23 overseas cooperation institutions in 19 countries since 2023.
“The cooperation institutions generally meet the requirements in terms of venue construction, feeding and nursing, and disease prevention and control measures,” Mr Zhang said, adding that pandas living abroad are generally “in good health”.
He said China will further improve the international cooperation management mechanism for giant pandas, carry out regular daily health monitoring and field inspection and assessment, and continue to strengthen cooperation with international partners for the protection of endangered species and biodiversity.

There's a plentiful supply of nature and ecology writers that criticize "Anthropocentrism" and tell readers that we shouldn't consider ourselves more important than other life forms, and then they write things that are like "We evolved to live in Nature in a Natural environment...Long ago humans lived as hunter-gatherers instead of farming and domesticating animals...But when civilization was created, man unnaturally subjugated and modified plants and animals...Bringing them under human control for his own benefit...Man replaces natural ecosystems with artificially created "post-natural" environments...Now humans live in an unnatural environment that is separated from Nature...and i'm like buddy. do you even hear yourself
Since I have access to a bigger library now, I've explored "deep ecology" and "green anarchism" and "Biocentrism" a bit more and what i've seen is still kinda silly. The writers have very thoughtful theory and philosophy of diverse subjects relating to morality, society, power, and liberation, but...they just don't know very much about Nature.
I mean several things by that: first, they're not clear on the boring, practical details of things like food systems and the way construction alters ecosystems, second, they don't try to clearly define what "nature" is, and third, they act like "nature" has a clear definition anyway.
Now nature is pretty much undefinable anyway, a couple possible definitions are "all things that exist, have existed, or are possible in the universe" and "the thing that a forest has that a parking lot doesn't." You can say "biodiversity," but every space has biodiversity, and it's not clear how much biodiversity a space is "supposed" to have, we're just going on vibes. And the vibes are right, in a way; I visited an old-growth forest and it was DIFFERENT than any place i'd ever been in a way that is hard to describe. A flourishing, biodiverse ecosystem is different than a parking lot, a lawn, a monoculture field of corn. They say it's good for your health to be "in nature." What does that mean? At what point does a place become "nature?" How many trees does it have to have?
Something that is so painful to me is when people write "Human activities" as a cause of biodiversity loss. This is an act of cowardice. WHICH human activities? Name them.
A lot of nature and ecology writings treat humans like they have an anti-biodiversity force field that emanates from them. They write like lands on Earth are each contested between two inversely proportional forces, "Nature" and "Humans."
Without any more information, this is ethereal bullshit on par with crystals having energies. I am totally perplexed at the lack of curiosity about the specific causes and details of "human impacts." The division of habitats by so many roads and relentless speeding of cars with no way for wildlife to cross...the dumping of massive amounts of poison into soils and water...the wounding and disturbance of topsoil...these are the "human activities," but we can imagine a world without such destruction, and we can create that world.
Too many essays and papers talking about Nature non-specifically, an Idea of Nature, a Concept that everyone just intuitively knows. Nature is...you know...wildness! and trees! and...well, you know, NATURE!
And we do know! When we step out into the parking lot surrounded by low, squarish buildings and blaring signs and the stink of car exhaust, we know that something is very wrong with this place! Even we find these horrible un-places harsh and unwelcoming.
But it is very hard to imagine something different, because the other type of place, the place that is beautiful and soothes the spirit and is full of life, is by definition the place where humans only go to visit, the complete opposite and inverse of a place where humans work and live! Wherever humans live, shop, eat, fulfill their daily needs, that place is Not Nature.
The huge mistake, is that we believe that it is necessary to have places that are Not Nature. We believe that for humans to exist, areas must be set aside where the very concept of Nature is utterly obliterated.
From this imaginary and dismal point of view, we have to carefully confine our own lives to places that are utterly poisoned, sterilized, made into a hostile wasteland, and leave all the rest of the living biosphere to itself in pristine preserves.
And in this imaginary and dismal point of view, the one that divides Earth into Nature and Humans, it is okay to poison and to sterilize and to destroy, because humans must live SOMEWHERE, therefore Nature must be utterly excluded from at least SOME of Earth.
BUT...WHAT IF EVERYWHERE IS NATURE? What if the dandelions in the cracks of the pavement, the lichens growing on the park bench, the wildflowers on the side of the road, the sparrows in the parking lot—what if they are all Nature just as much as anything else? What if they too are sacred? What if it is our responsibility to see the connectedness of all life and to care for all ecosystems, however broken and hurt they may be?
What if Nature is not distant and abstract, untouched in some pristine place, but always reaching out, digging into the crumbled concrete and gravel and compacted ground, clawing to return to us and bring us back home?
It does not take away from the value of the old-growth forest or the unplowed prairie if we open our eyes and see even the scraggliest patch of overgrown weeds for the powerful manifestation of Nature it truly is.
Nature is not a place or a thing. Nature is the Movement, the Endless Happening, constantly alive throughout all life, the way of all things being family, the way of all things taking care of each other, the way of all life being constantly transformed through one another. You breathe the breath of the trees of your home, you drink the water of the streams of your home, you eat the sunlight that falls on your home, grown in the soil where all things go to be transformed through death into a new form of life, fed by the mycorrhizal network, pollinated by the bees, wasps, flies, and moths, nourished by the bone, blood and manure of beasts, and ultimately the fertile river valleys where agriculture first began, were replenished by the rich silt that washed down the river, which came from the forests in the mountains that shed their leaves to make a feast for a million decomposing critters, which is how the rich soil is made.
In this way they all take care of you, and in return you are asked to Live—to take care of them in return, to live as part of the great family of everything alive, to live, to live
What are human activities...? Deforestation? Mining? Spraying pesticides? Building housing developments? But is that all? Are we inherently a "bad" and "destructive" species, or is our ability to acquire and pass down knowledge, use tools and novel behaviors, alter our surroundings, shape ecosystems, adapt our lifestyles almost infinitely, and persist in almost any environment, simply incredibly powerful for good or for evil?
First of all, what better way to demonstrate a contrast to anthropocentrism...than to compare the impact of humans alone to the impact of an ENTIRE KINGDOM OF LIFE, the fungi????? Of course all of Fungi are more important than one single species??? Wtf?!?!?
But also, we should not convince ourselves of our own insignificance and worthlessness to the biosphere, because in the same way that individual self-loathing can be a way to avoid the hard work of loving oneself and advocating for the love one deserves, collective self-loathing as a species is a way of avoiding the responsibility we have to other life forms.
How can this author not think of a single role Humans play in the ecosystem?? What species plants trees, saves seeds, documents rare plants, rescues injured animals and heals them, raises orphaned chicks, manages controlled burns, digs ponds, thoughtfully harvests in anticipation of future seasons, mercifully culls in understanding of suffering that cannot be fixed? What species writes a new chapter in the genome of the American Chestnut so it can be saved from extinction? What species mends the broken kakapo egg with sticky tape? What species addresses their own habitat with that fondest name of Home?

requests are open, but you can just say hi! | bts masterlist
The flashbulbs popped incessantly, their sharp bursts of light illuminating the sleek, modern interior of the London hotel's conference room. At the center of this maelstrom of media attention stood Kim Seokjin, his perfectly coiffed hair and designer suit a stark contrast to the casual attire of the assembled journalists. His megawatt smile, the one that had graced countless movie posters and magazine covers, was firmly in place as he fielded questions about his latest career move.
"Mr. Kim," a reporter called out, "how does it feel to be the first male asian lead in a Bridgerton series?"
Jin's smile never wavered as he responded, his English crisp and barely accented. "It's an honor and a tremendous responsibility. I'm thrilled to be part of this groundbreaking moment in television history."
From her position near the back of the room, Y/N fought the urge to roll her eyes. She'd heard similar platitudes from countless celebrities over the years, and as a senior writer for Spotlight, one of the entertainment industry's most respected magazines, she'd developed a finely-tuned bullshit detector. There was something in Jin's perfectly rehearsed answers that didn't sit right with her.
As the press conference continued, Y/N observed Jin closely. Behind the charm and the practiced responses, she caught glimpses of something else – a tightness around his eyes, a barely perceptible pause before certain answers. He was nervous, she realized. The great Kim Seokjin, A-list actor and Asia's sweetheart, was out of his depth.
When it was her turn to ask a question, Y/N didn't hold back. "Mr. Kim," she began, her tone professional but with an edge that made Jin's eyes snap to hers, "your casting has been met with mixed reactions. Some praise it as a step forward for diversity, while others question whether an actor known primarily for modern roles can authentically portray a Regency-era character. How do you respond to critics who say you were cast more for your star power than your suitability for the role?"
A hush fell over the room. Jin's smile faltered for a split second before he regained his composure. "I understand the concerns," he said, his voice steady but with a new intensity. "Throughout my career, I've always sought to challenge myself with diverse roles. While it's true that this is my first period drama, I've been working tirelessly to immerse myself in the era and the character. I was cast because the producers believe in my ability to bring Lord Christopher Hawthorne to life. I intend to prove them right – and to prove the critics wrong."
Their eyes locked, a silent battle of wills. Y/N saw a flicker of something in Jin's gaze – defiance, perhaps, or determination. For a moment, the carefully constructed movie star facade slipped, revealing a glimpse of the man beneath.
The moment passed as quickly as it had come. Jin turned to answer another question, but Y/N noticed that his responses had lost some of their polish. She had rattled him, and a small part of her – the part that had clawed its way up from intern to senior writer in a cutthroat industry – felt a twinge of satisfaction.
As the press conference wound down, Y/N hung back, observing Jin as he chatted with a few lingering reporters. His charm was back in full force, but now that she had seen behind the curtain, she couldn't unsee the subtle signs of strain.
Back at the Spotlight offices, Y/N's fingers flew over her keyboard as she typed up her article. Her editor, Yannie, peered over her shoulder.
"Well?" she asked. "What's the verdict on our Hollywood heartthrob?"
Y/N leaned back in her chair, considering. "He's... interesting," she said finally. "Charming, obviously. But there's more there. He's not as confident as he wants us to believe."
Yannie raised an eyebrow. "Oh? Do tell."
"He's taking a huge risk with this role," Y/N explained. "It could make or break his career. He knows it, and he's terrified."
"Sounds like there's a story there," Yannie mused.
Y/N nodded, already formulating angles in her mind. "Oh, there is. The question is whether he'll let anyone tell it."
The article Y/N penned was a masterclass in nuanced criticism. She praised Jin's ambition and the groundbreaking nature of his casting while questioning Hollywood's motives. Was this a genuine step towards diversity, or a calculated move to tap into the global Asian market? She highlighted Jin's lack of experience in period dramas and the immense pressure he faced stepping into such an iconic role.
The piece went viral within hours of publication. #JinInBridgerton trended on Twitter, with fans and critics alike dissecting Y/N's every word. Jin himself remained silent on social media, but Y/N had a feeling her article had struck a nerve.
She was proven right a few days later when Jin appeared on The Late Late Show. The host, after some playful banter about Jin's transition from action movies to Regency romance, brought up Y/N's article.
"So, Jin," the host said, his tone light but his eyes gleaming with the scent of potential drama, "there's been a lot of buzz about your casting. One article, in particular, has gotten a lot of attention. Any thoughts?"
Jin's laugh was perfectly calibrated to sound carefree. "Oh, you know how it is," he said, waving a hand dismissively. "There's always someone looking to stir up controversy. I try not to pay too much attention to it."
"But this writer, Y/N from Spotlight, she raised some interesting points about diversity in Hollywood and the challenges you might face in this role," the host pressed.
For a split second, Jin's mask slipped. Y/N, watching the interview from her apartment, leaned forward, catching the flash of irritation in his eyes before his smile reasserted itself.
"Look," Jin said, his tone a touch cooler than before, "I respect everyone's right to their opinion. But at the end of the day, I was cast because I'm right for this role. I'm here to act, not to be a poster boy for diversity or to debate Hollywood politics. I'll let my performance speak for itself."
The host, sensing he'd struck gold, opened his mouth to ask a follow-up question, but Jin smoothly changed the subject, regaling the audience with a humorous anecdote about learning to ride horses for the show. The moment passed, but Y/N knew she'd gotten under his skin.
As the Bridgerton production ramped up, Y/N found herself assigned to cover various aspects of the show's development. She attended costume fittings, watched rehearsals from afar, and interviewed supporting cast members. But Jin remained elusive, always just out of reach.
It was at one of these events – a press day showcasing the show's elaborate sets – that Y/N first encountered Kyrie Evans, Jin's co-star and leading lady. Fresh off her Golden Globe win for a gritty indie drama, Kyrie was Hollywood's newest darling, her casting in Bridgerton seen as a coup for the show.
Kyrie was everything Jin wasn't – effortlessly cool, refreshingly candid, and undeniably talented. As Y/N watched her interact with the press, she couldn't help but draw comparisons to Jin's more guarded approach.
"Ms. Evans," Y/N said when she got her chance to speak with the actress, "your casting alongside Jin has generated a lot of excitement. How has it been working with him so far?"
Kyrie's smile was warm and genuine. "Oh, it's been wonderful," she gushed. "Jin is such a professional, always prepared and ready to give 110%. And let me tell you, the man can smolder like nobody's business. Our chemistry readings nearly set the room on fire!"
Y/N raised an eyebrow at this, her journalistic instincts tingling. "That's quite an endorsement," she said carefully. "Some have questioned whether Jin has the acting chops to carry a show of this caliber. It sounds like you disagree?"
For a moment, Kyrie's sunny demeanor faltered. "I think," she said, choosing her words with care, "that people will be very surprised by Jin's performance. He's not just a pretty face or a famous name. He's a dedicated artist who's pouring his heart and soul into this role."
As Kyrie moved on to the next reporter, Y/N mulled over her words. There was sincerity there, certainly, but also a hint of something else. Protectiveness, perhaps? Or was Kyrie simply playing the game, talking up her co-star as expected?
The interaction with Kyrie, brief as it was, added another layer to the complex picture Y/N was forming of the Bridgerton production. As she left the set that day, her mind was already piecing together the elements of her next article.
But the entertainment world never stands still, and the Jin-Kyrie dynamic was about to be complicated by an unexpected player.
News broke late one evening of a surprise announcement: Jeon Jungkook, a rising solo artist making waves in the music industry, was gearing up to release his first album. The internet exploded with excitement, #JungkookIsComing trending worldwide within minutes.
Y/N, like any entertainment journalist worth their salt, immediately began connecting the dots. Would this major music event affect the buzz around Bridgerton and Jin's high-profile role?
As she dug deeper, combing through social media and reaching out to industry contacts, Y/N stumbled upon something curious. A series of photos from a music awards show afterparty several months back showed Jungkook in deep conversation with none other than Kyrie Evans. In one blurry shot, their heads were bent close together, Kyrie's hand on Jungkook's arm.
It could be nothing, Y/N knew. Celebrities mingled all the time at such events. But her instincts told her there was more to the story.
The next day, as Y/N was piecing together her notes on the Jungkook announcement, her editor Yannie called her into her office.
"I've got a proposition for you," she said without preamble. "We want to do a deep dive on Jin's Bridgerton journey. Behind-the-scenes, exclusive access, the whole nine yards. I want you on it."
Y/N blinked in surprise. "Me? Are you sure? Jin and I... well, we haven't exactly hit it off."
Yannie grinned. "Exactly. You've gotten under his skin. You've challenged him. That's exactly the kind of energy we want for this piece. We don't need another puff piece about how dreamy he looks in Regency costumes. We want the real story – the struggles, the doubts, the triumphs. You're the one who can get it."
As the implications of the assignment sank in, Y/N felt a mix of excitement and trepidation. This was a huge opportunity, the kind that could catapult her career to new heights. But it also meant spending extended time with Jin, a prospect that filled her with an emotion she couldn't quite name.
"What about access?" she asked. "Jin's team hasn't exactly been forthcoming so far."
Yannie's grin widened. "Already taken care of. I've been in talks with the show's producers. They love the idea of an in-depth feature. Jin's been informed. He's... well, let's say he's agreed to cooperate."
Y/N could only imagine how that conversation had gone. She pictured Jin's face, that perfect mask cracking under the strain of forced politeness. Despite herself, she felt a twinge of sympathy for him. This couldn't be easy for him either.
"Alright," she said finally. "I'm in."
As she left Yannie's office, her mind was already racing with possibilities. This was her chance to really dig into Jin's story, to peel back the layers of celebrity and find the human being underneath. It was also, she realized with a mixture of anticipation and dread, a chance for Jin to challenge her own preconceptions.
The next few months promised to be a rollercoaster. Y/N took a deep breath, squaring her shoulders. Whatever happened, she was determined to tell this story – Jin's story – with all the complexity and nuance it deserved.
Little did she know that this assignment would not only change her career but would also set her on a collision course with destiny, one that would intertwine her fate with Jin's in ways neither of them could have imagined.
As she gathered her things to leave the office, Y/N's phone buzzed with a text from an unknown number. Her breath caught as she read the message:
"Ms. Y/N, I look forward to our upcoming collaboration. Let's both do our best to uncover the truth. - Kim Seokjin"

Answering some bulk questions
I am getting the same kind of questions in my inbox and instead of answering them all individually, I thought I would just make one long post. Hopefully that can clear some things up.
Why is m!pen white and f!pen black?
Mostly because the character of Pen is death. They have no form. Not a real one. Much like the MC, the image they are presenting is a construct. So, when I thought about that, I kind of thought it would be fun to play around with two very different aesthetics (I think in the final edit I might even write them a bit different). I did this for two reasons. One, because I haven't really seen this in ifs. And two, I kind of liked the duality of it. Opposites, really. It sat well with me for the character of death.
2. Why does nothing bad ever happen to Milo? Stop playing favorites.
Bad things have happened to Milo. More so than the other characters, I would argue. I have a feeling this is more from people annoyed that a very specific bad thing won't happen to Milo. Because Milo has watched Malcolm and MC die. Was beaten as a child. Orphaned. Didn't know where his real home was or who he was. Has a ghost for a sister. (who he also watched die). Has been responsible for keeping his best friend sane for quite a few years. And got the shittiest job in the world. He has also been stabbed at quite a bit. Betrayed. And used.
I do a lot of bad things to Milo. Favorites would be if nothing bad happened to him. And defending your characters decisions is not playing favorites. It is just knowing your characters as a writer.
3. Who is your favorite RO?
I have said before that Milo is not my favorite to write. So inevitably I get asked who is. I don't answer this question because I don't want the complaints.
4. Why don't you have stats?
Because I don't like them. I come from much more of a storytelling perspective than a game mechanics one. And don't get me wrong. People that do game mechanics are awesome. I admire them a ton and enjoy their games (though my field is more video games). But that's never what I wanted the Night Market to be. I just want people to be immersed.
5. Do you feel you have to have inclusivity as a writer?
I don't know why I've been getting this one a lot. Might be something going on in the community. The honest answer is no, I do not. I have never felt pressured to have a certain representation within the Night Market. That all being said, maybe I don't feel that way because I tend to have an organically more diverse cast of characters? But I can't say I have ever felt like I have to put a certain representation in. And I don't believe writers should feel pressure for that. Because a lot of times, if you are just putting in a token character to do it, it becomes a bit problematic.
6. What are your favorite IF's and do you have recomendations?
I hate to say this, but I don't read IF's. I've dabbled occasionally in the past but I find when I read IF's, it messes with my head and my ability to write. Now, I read a lot of novels. That is my preferred vehicle of reading. But as for IF's, I probably won't read a lot of them until I am officially done with the Night Market. I struggle to enjoy stories when I feel like it is a part of my day to day job.
7. Why don't you ever speak out politically?
Because that is private for me. I don't want to. I want to provide an escape from the world. Not add to discussions that are being had by people far more adept than me. I leave my political feelings and responsibilities at home.
8. Why can't you provide (insert numerous topics) to the route?
Because coding and writing are a bitch. There is a lot of work that goes into this stuff that isn't always fun. And sometimes, as much as I would like to put something in or have a new route, I just can't. I am one person. A person who has a pretty hefty personal life. I am doing what I can.

JSTOR Daily offers a profound exploration of Chicanx, a term historically associated with Mexican Americans, through a meticulously curated reading list. This collection begins by analyzing the construction of race for Mexican descendants in the U.S., highlighting how institutional racial constructs led to discrimination and overshadowed the diverse Indigenous, Black, and European ancestries. The list includes pivotal works from the Chicano Movement of the 1960s and 1970s, focusing on activism against historical injustices in education, policing, and housing.
Central to this collection is Chicana Feminism, which expanded the conversation to include intersectional views on race, gender, and sexuality. This shift mirrors the evolution of Chicanx identity, from a cultural marker to a political identity encompassing various racial and ethnic backgrounds.
Concluding with the latest interdisciplinary studies in Chicanx, the list showcases recent research on LGBTQ+ experiences and issues shared by Mexican and Central American communities. This evolution in the field is exemplified by changes in academic departments, like the renaming of the UCLA César E. Chávez Department to include Central American Studies. JSTOR Daily invites readers to a scholarly journey through the dynamic history and identity of the Chicanx community with this comprehensive reading list.

Diverse African Cultures and Beliefs about Life After Death
Introduction
Africa is a continent rich in cultural diversity and traditions, and this extends to its beliefs about life after death. Across the vast expanse of Africa, there are numerous cultures, each with its own unique perspective on what happens when life on Earth comes to an end. In this article, we will explore some of the fascinating beliefs about life after death that are deeply ingrained in African societies.
1. The Ancestor Veneration of the Akan People (Ghana and Ivory Coast)
In Akan culture, which encompasses the Ashanti, Fante, and Akuapem people, ancestors hold a significant place in the spiritual realm. They believe that after death, the souls of the departed continue to exist and influence the lives of their living descendants. Ancestor veneration involves rituals, offerings, and prayers to keep these spirits content and receive guidance and protection from them.
2. The Reincarnation Belief of the Yoruba People (Nigeria, Benin, and Togo)
The Yoruba people have a belief in reincarnation, where it is thought that the soul of a deceased person is reborn into a new body. The deceased's name may even be given to the newborn as a way of connecting the past and present lives. The Yoruba also believe that the deceased can communicate with the living in dreams and visions.
3. The Eternal Journey in Ancient Egyptian Culture (Egypt)
Ancient Egypt is renowned for its elaborate beliefs about the afterlife. Egyptians believed in a complex journey after death, where the soul faced trials and judgment before reaching the eternal paradise known as the "Field of Reeds." To ensure a successful afterlife, elaborate burial rituals and tombs were constructed, including the famous pyramids.
4. The Importance of Ancestral Connection in Zulu Beliefs (South Africa)
Among the Zulu people, the connection to ancestors is deeply cherished. It is believed that after death, the ancestors continue to play a role in the lives of their descendants. Rituals such as sacrifices and ceremonies are performed to honor and seek guidance from these ancestral spirits. Displeasing the ancestors can bring misfortune, while pleasing them can bring blessings.
5. The Dualistic Beliefs of the Dogon People (Mali)
The Dogon people have a dualistic belief system. They believe that after death, one's soul splits into two parts: one part goes to the ancestral realm, while the other is reincarnated into a new being. This complex system reflects the Dogon's spiritual connection to both their ancestors and the cycle of life.
6. The Spiritual Transition in the Akan-Bono Culture (Ghana)
The Akan-Bono people have a unique belief in the transitional phase after death. It is believed that after a person dies, their soul goes through a period of adjustment before joining the ancestors in the spiritual realm. During this time, the soul is thought to revisit important places and people from their earthly life.:
7. The Burial Rituals of the Senufo People (Ivory Coast, Mali, and Burkina Faso)
Among the Senufo people, the transition from life to the afterlife is marked by elaborate burial rituals. They believe that after death, the deceased's spirit lingers in the vicinity of their burial site. Special ceremonies and sacrifices are conducted to ensure a peaceful journey for the departed and to maintain a connection between the living and the deceased.
8. The Concept of the "Underworld" in San/Bushmen Beliefs (Southern Africa)
The San people, also known as Bushmen, have a belief in an underworld inhabited by spirits. After death, the souls of the departed are thought to travel to this underworld, which is considered a realm of ancestral spirits. The San people often use trance dance rituals to communicate with these spirits and seek guidance.
9. The Immortality Belief of the Himba People (Namibia)
The Himba people hold a belief that the spirits of their ancestors are immortal and continue to watch over the living. They also believe in reincarnation, where the spirit of a deceased person can be reborn into a new child within the same family. This belief reinforces the strong bond between generations.
10. The Role of Dreams in Khoikhoi Beliefs (South Africa)
The Khoikhoi people place great importance on dreams as a means of communication with the deceased. It is believed that dreams can provide insights, warnings, or messages from the spirit world. Special rituals are performed to interpret dreams and receive guidance from ancestors.
11. The Journey to the "Land of the Dead" in Dinka Culture (South Sudan)
Among the Dinka people, the journey to the afterlife is seen as a migration to the "Land of the Dead." They believe that the deceased will join their ancestors in this realm, where they can continue their pastoral lifestyle. Special rites and ceremonies are conducted to facilitate this transition.
12. The Symbolism of the Baobab Tree in Many African Beliefs
Across various African cultures, the mighty baobab tree is often associated with the afterlife. It is believed that these ancient trees serve as a link between the earthly realm and the world of spirits. Many cultures bury their deceased near baobab trees, believing that the tree's roots connect with the spirits below.
Conclusion

Who Is the Egyptian Tycoon Accused of Charging Palestinians to Escape Gaza?
Ibrahim al-Organi has close connections with the Egyptian government, diplomats say, and he has multiple business interests in Gaza.
By Vivian Yee, Emad Mekay and Adam Rasgon Vivian Yee and Emad Mekay reported from Cairo, and Adam Rasgon from Jerusalem.
June 20, 2024, 5:49 a.m. ET
He is an Egyptian mogul who is little known outside the region.
The tycoon, Ibrahim al-Organi, chairman of Organi Group, oversees a vast network of companies involved in construction, real estate and security. He maintains close connections to top Egyptian officials, three people who have tracked the relationship and who spoke on condition of anonymity to protect their work in the region.
But it is Hala — a company that Organi Group has listed as one of its own — that has drawn the most scrutiny.
Hala has emerged as a lifeline for Palestinians who are trying to escape war-torn Gaza but has also been accused of squeezing desperate people with exorbitant fees.
In an interview this month, Mr. Organi spoke at length and in detail about Hala’s activities, though he said that his role in the company was limited and that he was just one of many shareholders.
Officials at Hala did not respond to questions sent by email.
What is Hala?
Hala had long been listed on Organi Group’s website as one of the conglomerate’s companies, but the reference appeared to have been removed recently.
Organi Group did not respond to a request for comment about why it had removed Hala from the website. Organi Group has at least eight businesses. The company lists Mr. Organi as its chairman and his son, Essameldin Organi, as the chief executive.
The older Mr. Organi, according to the company’s website, has built “a diverse business empire acting as an inseparable backbone to the Egyptian economy in countless fields.”
In the interview in his office in Cairo, Mr. Organi described Hala as a tourism company, “just like any company that exists at an airport.”
It was set up in 2017, he said, to provide V.I.P. services to Palestinian travelers who wanted an upgraded experience crossing through Rafah, the southernmost city in Gaza. At the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and the Gaza Strip in February.
Mohamed Abd El Ghany/Reuters According to people who paid for its services during the war, Hala has charged most Gazans older than 16 years $5,000, and most of those younger than 16 half that, $2,500, to coordinate their exits. They also said V.I.P. service was missing. Mr. Organi says Hala charges $2,500 per adult — and nothing for children.
What are the mogul’s ties to Gaza?
Mr. Organi was born in 1974 in the Egyptian border town of Sheikh Zuweid near Gaza.
He says he is merely a shareholder or partner in any companies with business relating to Gaza. But in the interview, he said his companies played a key role in the reconstruction in Gaza, including the removal of rubble, after a previous round of war between Israel and Hamas in 2021. Sign up for the Israel-Hamas War Briefing.
His Instagram account features several videos that show earth-moving equipment clearing destroyed buildings in Gaza City in 2021. Text below many videos note that the work was being carried out based on the “instructions from President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.”
Mr. Organi also leases trucks to aid groups transporting supplies into the territory and procures some of those same supplies. Weeks after the Oct. 7 Hamas-led attack in Israel that led to the war, Mr. Organi appeared at the border between Egypt and Gaza and pledged to support Palestinians in Gaza. “We won’t hesitate,” he said in remarks broadcast by the Egyptian news media. “They are our brothers.” Mr. Organi also says he is in talks about potentially participating in Gaza’s reconstruction after the war.
How is he linked to the Egyptian government?
Mr. Organi has maintained close relationships with members of the Egyptian government, using his influence to advance his business interests, according to two diplomats familiar with the matter. He was already a well-known businessman in Sinai when he rose to prominence in the 2010s after he partnered with the Egyptian military to fight militants in the peninsula who claimed affiliation with the Islamic State.

In the interview, Mr. Organi said he had led the Sinai Tribes’ Union, a statebacked group that helped to fight the militants in the peninsula.“God helped us gather the tribes again under the banner of the Union and put me as the head,” he said. “We decided to help the government wipe out terror groups completely.”
In 2022, Mr. el-Sisi appointed Mr. Organi as one of two nongovernment members on the Sinai Development Authority, which is responsible for development initiatives in the peninsula.
Mr. Organi recently announced that he, along with other tribal figures, would build a city named for Mr. elSisi in Sinai. He said that did not mean he had a special relationship with the president, and that others were involved. “We are known for strongly supporting President Sisi and we love him,” Mr. Organi said, “but it’s not that we are the only ones.”

Wari Civilization
The Wari Civilization flourished in the coastal and highland areas of ancient Peru between c. 450 and c. 1000 CE. Based at their capital Huari, the Wari successfully exploited the diverse landscapes they controlled to construct an empire administered by provincial capitals connected by a large road network. Their methods of maintaining an empire and artistic style would have a significant influence on the later Inca civilization.
The Wari were contemporary with those other great Middle Horizon (c. 600 - 1000 CE) cultures centred at Tiwanaku and Pukara. The more militaristic Wari were also gifted agriculturalists and they constructed canals to irrigate terraced fields. The economic stability and prosperity this brought allowed the Wari to implement a combined strategy of military might, economic benefits, and distinct artistic imagery to forge an empire across ancient Peru. Their superior management of the land also helped them resist the 30-year drought period which during the end of the 6th century CE contributed to the decline of the neighbouring Nazca and Moche civilizations.
The Wari were undoubtedly influenced by contemporary cultures, for example, appropriating the Chavin Staff deity — a god closely associated with the sun, rain, and maize, all so vital to cultures dependent on agriculture and the whims of an unreliable climate. They transformed it into a ritual icon present on textiles and pottery, spreading their own branded iconography and leaving a lasting legacy in Andean art.
Huari
The capital at Huari (25 km north of modern Ayacucho) is located at an altitude of 2,800 m and is spread over 15 square kilometres. It was first settled around 250 CE and eventually had a population possibly as high as 70,000 at its peak. Huari shows typical features of Andean architecture: densely packed wall-enclosed rectangular structures which can be further divided into a maze of compartments. The city's walls are massive (up to 10 metres high and 4 metres thick) and built using largely unworked stones set with a mud mortar. Buildings had two or three stories, courtyards were lined with stone benches set in the walls, and drains were stone-lined. The floors and walls of buildings were generally covered with plaster and painted white.
There is little distinction in Wari architecture between public and private buildings and little evidence of town planning. A royal palace has, however, been identified in the northwest section of the city, its oldest area of habitation and called Vegachayoq Moqo. A now ruined temple was located in the Moraduchayuq compound in the southeast of the city. It was built in the 6th century CE and had subterranean parts with the whole structure once painted red. Like other buildings at the site it was deliberately destroyed and ritually buried. The city seems to have been abandoned c. 800 CE for reasons unknown.
Tombs have been excavated at Huari which contained fine examples of Wari textiles. Ceramics are also amongst finds at the site. A royal tomb was discovered in the Monjachayoq zone which consists of 25 chambers on two different levels, all lined with finely cut stone slabs. In addition, a shaft descends to a third level chamber which has the shape of a llama. Finally, a circle chamber was cut out at a fourth level down. The llama-shaped tomb, looted in antiquity, was the royal resting place and dates to 750-800 CE.
Huari was once surrounded by irrigated fields and fresh water ran through the city via underground conduits. Further indicators of prosperity are the presence of areas dedicated to the production of specific goods such as ceramics and jewellery. Precious materials for these workshops and imported goods indicate trade with far-flung places: shells from the coast and Spondylus from Ecuador, for example. The presence of buildings used for storage at Huari and other Wari cities also indicates a centrally controlled trade network spread across ancient Peru.

Team Supernova's Admins!
Just a while until the year anniversary, so I finally got around to sketching/writing down more about the different sectors in the team and what they do. This might be a bit of a long read so you can just scroll through the photos since they sum it up ^^
Elesa is the Civil Admin, her job mainly revolves around managing the people living in the tunnels directly under Nimbasa. She was originally asked to do this work because she was well known and well liked in Nimbasa and would have an easier time talking to and organizing them. Generally she does well with the work, and often assists people with tasks where possible.
The identifying colour for this sector is yellow. The armbands created by the team use a strip of fabric dyed with onion skins and connected with a diagonal stitch.
Position overview:
Mess Cooking - A large number of people need to be fed due to the size of the team. Mealtimes are fixed, with groups of members being called down at a time to prevent overcrowding. Generally rations are not very large or diverse due to the limitations of what food can be found/grown in the ice Pantry - Whenever meats, certain plants, or other high nutrient/long lasting foods are brought in, a portion is served fresh during the day before being smoked, dried, or preserved for the future. Pantry stocking also includes checking what recovered canned goods are safe to eat and store
Material Textiles - Clothing, blankets, cords, ropes, tarps, and other fiber based goods are necessary to survive the new environment. A formal uniform does not exist for Team Supernova, however there are specific clothing articles made and used by the team (scarves, coat linings, sweaters, armbands, bags, etc). The fabric made in-house is cotton from the team's herd of whimsicott or mareep, but it's common for members to use clothing and materials scavenged from upstairs Tools - Similar to clothing, many tools are scavenged from the surface. This group works mainly to maintain and repair tools for the team, though they can sometimes craft their own given enough time and materials. They are also responsible for the care and maintenance of weapons Furnishing - The base is sparse in terms of furniture, however there are a number of beds, shelves, low tables, and other furnishings that are made or repaired by the team. They are also responsible for building carry crates and sturdy boxes for Shipment and Supply. They most commonly work in wood that is either cut or scavenged
Custodial Bunks - The bunk custodians are responsible for keeping the members' quarters clean and organized. Their work extends to cleaning certain work rooms as well, mainly kitchens herd spaces Halls - Hall custodians are tunnel custodians, they are sent to keep the entrance gates to the tunnels clear and to clean the aftermath of any attacks that occur within them. Security members commonly assist them in cleaning, and some even switch to working as custodians if/when they can't work on the field anymore
Structural Building Repair - Team Supernova's base is not prone to damage, since it's meant to run trains and all, but in cases where an attack occurs, the building repair team will deal with it. Usually they patch up floors and walls, however they also make temporary structures for the team (curtain rooms, sheds, tents, etc) Reinforcement - Where building repair seeks to make the base more liveable, reinforcement specializes in barricades and perimeter walls/fencing. Most of their construction happens outside the base, where they seal up certain areas/buildings that that the team has interest in, is using, or needs to keep from Team Plasma
Repair Machines - When complex items are salvaged, they are brought to the mechanics to make use of them. These are also the people who work with the more complicated weapons the Team uses. When Team Supernova begins developing its own weapons to counter Team Plasma, these are the members who make it possible Scrap and Recycling - If an item is too damaged to repair, or is deemed not significant enough to repair, it is broken down into its components to be utilized elsewhere. This is most common with scavenged furniture and tools, where they are broken into their metal, wood, textile, padding, and other extra pieces
Part timers/trainees - New members of Team Supernova often need a little time to settle into a particular job. These people are considered trainees and rotate between a few work stations until they find one that they can work well in. Some members do not have a fixed job at all, and are instead considered extra hands. They are sent to assist with any particular department that needs more manpower. Children do not work, however they can assist with some work if they would like, and those over the age of 14 are welcome to become apprentices and join a certain job
Skyla is the Shipment Admin, her job involves tracking, organizing, and accompanying members during the transportation of items around and beyond the base. She was asked to do this work due to her experience handling the influx and efflux of planes at her airport (though she also requested to do this as she wanted connections between Supernova's homebase in Nimbasa and nearby settlements). She mostly handles organization, however she will always assist for transporting vital goods and for moving fast.
The identifying colour for this sector is red. The armbands created by the team use a strip of fabric dyed with various tree materials (chokecherry, slippery elm, black willow) and have two layers, with the outer layer being twisted.
Position overview:
Above Ground Short Distance - Above ground, short distance is anywhere within the range of Nimbasa City itself. This kind of transportation is typically used to carry goods that are otherwise too difficult or too unwieldy for the Supply corps, or for delivering items within the base to dropoff sites on the perimeter. They also carry materials for the reinforcement workers when going onto the surface Long Distance - Above ground, long distance is anywhere within the range of three cities, with the outermost limits being Undella, Mistralton, and Nacrene. Long distance transport is typically reserved for clearing out cities originally claimed by Team Plasma or warehouses used to store resources for Team Plasma Stealth Transport - When ambushes, surprise attacks, or supply interceptions are planned, stealth transport members are sent to carry the spoils following the operation. These workers tend to have no loose openings on their clothes, keeping everything tucked. Their bags tend to cling tighter to their bodies and have padding in the inside to limit the noise of clinking items. They also tend to wear grey or black uniforms to blend into the snow and shadows during the night
Below ground Short Distance - Below ground, short distance is anywhere within the range of neighbouring cities, with the outermost limits being Black City, Driftveil, and Castelia. Because the road is smooth and the transport route is sheltered, short distance missions are able to cover more ground safely. Short transportation is usually for assisting on supply runs, where more resources need to be carried from whatever area they come from Long Distance - Below ground, long distance is anywhere within the range of four cities and the main Single loop, with the outermost limits being Humilau and Accumula. This kind of travel is not commonly utilized until Team Supernova begins opening stations in other cities as they are freed. Certain missions can have distances so long that an entire survival crew must be sent out, and may not return until weeks later. Once there are more members, these workers may carry mail between stations. Fast transport - Fast transport is typically reserved for important or emergency cargo. Members responsible for fast transport usually use a dolly, cart, small wagon, or other unpowered wheeled device to carry items, making them both faster and able to carry greater weight. Like with stealth transport, the uniforms are more fitted and tucked
Mamoru is the Security Admin, his job mainly involves managing sector members and ensuring that the base and its points of interest are well protected, as well as planning attacks against set Team Plasma bases. He requested the position to lighten Emmet's workload shortly after the team's formation. Though he was previously an assistant/secretary working with Emmet after Ingo's disappearance, he has taken the job with surprising grace and has performed well.
The identifying colour for this sector is blue. The armbands created by the team use a strip of salvaged fabric stitched in a continuous ring. Most, or at least many, security members were originally depot agents who kept both their green coat and blue armband, and new security members simply either wear discarded armbands or replicas. The green coats have been phased out in recent times, being replaced by/turned into either a white or black coat.
Position overview:
Patrol Above Ground - Patrol officers typically carry one communication device to report anything troubling, however each group has every member armed. Above ground, patrol officers wear white and grey, typically sticking to buildings and keeping watch for anything of interest/concern Below Ground - Organization and communication is identical to above ground patrolling, however below ground operators tend to work in pairs as the tunnels are generally safer. They wear black or dark colours to blend into the dull shadows. Some members also have eye covers which they switch out as they patrol, making their eyes more accustomed to seeing in the dark.
Guard Watchman - Posted around vantage points where they can see the perimeter and entrances to the tunnels, watchmen generally work solo and use a radio to report anything of interest/concern. They change places for day and night shifts Fixed Position - Guards who are fixed usually protect one area of the base at all time, typically entrance points, high traffic rooms and halls, or rooms storing important resources. A guard can work alone or in a pair depending on what they are looking after Escort - During shipment or supply runs, a group of security operators are sent to protect them during travel. Escort guards are more likely to carry ranged weapons, however many carry melee weapons. They will have at least one radio to update home base on their situation
Response Assault - If a call comes in reporting a Team Plasma attack, a set of security operators are dispatched to reach and resolve the situation as fast as possible. These members nearly always carry a firearm or complex weapon, and work in a group of at least 4. If a team is not readily available, all nearby active members are sent to respond instead Emergency - Emergency security operators are meant to respond to cases of injury or recovering unresponsive members. Generally these responders carry some basic medical supplies and have a partner with a radio and weapon. They work in groups of at least 3
Offense Melee weapons - In the event of a coordinated attack plan, melee weapons operators are sent to deal with threats up close and apprehend any Team Plasma members they can. Stealth - For ambush attacks, stealth operators are to deal with any threats as quickly and quietly as possible. All carry melee weapons, and tend to wear dark clothes to work at night. There are instances where members are disguised as Team Plasma grunts and infiltrate bases from inside as preparation for an upcoming attack Firearms/Heavy Weapons - During coordinated attacks, armed operators begin attacking from further away and begin closing in. They deal with ranged threats and clear the way for melee operators to finish off the rest. Heavy weapons are a similar story, however the kind of cannons they operate are usually reserved only for taking down Plasma bases
Burgh is the Supply Admin, his job focuses on organizing mission to secure resources from all areas outside the base. He requested the position as he wanted to see what could be recovered from the environment in terms of pokemon and what they could do to sustain them and themselves as long as possible. He often assists with foraging as he can recognize different plants.
The identifying colour for this sector is green. The armbands created by the team use a long strip of fabric dyed with stinging nettles and are tied around the arm twice. Some may be made from repurposed fabric from depot agent uniforms.
Position overview:
Forage Food - As simple as it sounds, members are sent out to look for edible plants to use for rations. This includes any wild fruit, vegetables, roots, or others that can be cooked or preserved Material - Foraging for materials mostly involves looking for wood, plants, soil, stones, and other such materials that can be used to make things such as tools, dyed fabrics, barricades, garden plots, etc.
Scavenge Usable - Scavengers are urban foragers, looking for functional goods within the buildings of Nimbasa. Hauls can be anything from tools, wood panels, metal bars, clothing, canned food, etc. They generally have more carrying space than foragers since they can't compress what they find Scrap - If scavengers find a non functional item that still has some usable parts, scrappers are sent to pick it clean and take all the raw materials back to base. They also take apart sections of structures if they can use the wood/metal
Produce Greenhouse - When Mistralton is taken from Team Plasma's control, sections of the greenhouses are saved to grow crops for rations. These members work off base and tend to the plants, sending back harvests when they happen Grotto - If the area is not overly icy, hidden grottos have gardens built inside them to grow food. Since they're out of the way, a lot of the produced food is grown and hidden in these grottos to keep them from being tampered by Team Plasma
Herd Husbandry - Particularly with whimsicott, mareep, or pokemon that can be raised for food, supply members are set to look after groups of pokemon for the team. They are fed, cleaned, checked, and bred to provide resources for the team Hunting - To supply protein for rations, some members are sent to hunt or fish for different pokemon. As much of the pokemon is used as possible, even if not for food
Whew, ok long review over. Alright any remaining notes:
These are not the only jobs on site but they are jobs that have at least 7-10 people minimum. For example there are medics/doctors, but they are spread thin and usually aren't called unless something goes very wrong
Admins usually add something extra to their uniform so people can easily identify them if they need anything from them. Elesa's stripes are an example of this, as well as Skyla's blue underlayer and Burgh's tassel cloak
A lot of team members will rotate between positions. The Civil sector is basically the only one that doesn't have them; Security operators will switch between guard, respons, patrol, etc every few weeks, Shipment members rotate after 1-3 missions to keep them from getting exhausted on long missions, and Supply members will shift around as missions require. The sector is essentially the only fixed job title, the team needs to be flexible so members will bend as needed
That's as far as I'll type on this one. If you made it this far in reading, thank you! Enjoy Team Leader Emmet on break for your troubles.
He's getting used to using his defrosted arm again ^^

Thinking about the social and legal construct of Wilderness (USA edition)
Motorized vehicles cannot be used in Wilderness backcountry — trail-building in Wilderness uses human muscle and livestock to carry supplies.
“Untouched” or “Unspoiled” wilderness. The (false) idea that human hands have never affected parts of Nature. The notion that human influence fundamentally takes away from the Naturalness.
Contrast these Touches for a moment: the Hetch-Hetchy dam, which provides water to the 39 million-population human city of San Francisco, whose creation was fought bitterly by conservationists. The desert razed into half-empty speculative rows of suburbs around Las Vegas, sprawl in an area inhospitable to human life. Food forests and Native American agriculture that supports a higher load of animal and plant life/diversity a century after it was left unattended. Invasive species control. Wildlife rehabilitation. Farming. Ranching. Ecosystems tended and bent by human hands.
Leave No Trace
Controlled burns. Firefighting.
The Wilderness Act of 1964 states that namelessness is an aspect of wilderness. Basically this means the namelessness of things must be preserved, and you can’t just go naming mountain peaks and rivers and stuff in places that are designated Wilderness.
Zion National Park has a valley which the native Americans who lived there called “Mukuntuweap.” Some still do call it Mukuntuweap. “Zion” is a name Mormons gave it. It is an oasis in the desert, a place where humans performed agriculture on the river and hunted animals. Today the valley is subject to millions of human visitors from all over the world. There is no farming or hunting, though native Americans are Permitted to harvest some for personal use. The land is, in the NPS fashion, preserved in a ‘natural’ a state as possible.
In Capitol Reef National Park, another Utah oasis, there is an orchard of fruit trees fed by the water. You can camp there today. The orchard was created by Mormon settlers, and there are historical installations about it.
I’m not against conservation, Leave No Trace, or the works that National Parks or forest service has done in the USA, but, listen. This too is a form of deliberate design. It’s an expression of human ideas of how the Ecosystem should be. Wilderness is to an extent a concept and ideal of human imagination. We have the power and responsibility to shape our shared environment.
I think. There exists among some people a squeamishness and embarrassment about existing as humans. How dare we take up space. Look at all the destruction our indiscriminate self-centeredness has wrought on the natural world: suburbs, strip-mining, fallow fields. But these industrial-scale extractive endeavors are recent.
And we are also part of the world. To live and die is to consume and rot. We are part of the wild. We take of it and we tend it.

DAY 5782
Jalsa, Mumbai Dec 16/17, 2023 Sat/Sun 1:51 AM
I tried , but could not .. so up and about and here with the most desired .. my Ef .. in non sleep condition ..
when work is absent , the desire is absent too .. to be occupied, to contribute to do some work differently or bring change ..
OR
study ..
With time now there is keenness to devote to some of the left over important tasks .. learning recording and satisfying the long cherished absolute firmed intent to preserve that which has been inherited , to leave and acknowledge legacy ..
the desire remains potent .. shared often with many .. but then it remains dormant in their thoughts and minds and unfinished attention less modes erupt ..
gravity respectability need judgement by them that can give it what it truly deserves is perhaps not readily ready .. that judgement shall be and should be of the 'me' .. I feel ..
But the hesitancy to execute it , and the desire at times merge into an abyss of unlimited depth .. and that is when time takes over and we are done .. for the moment ..
pushing a substance down your throat is a process, understood by the one feeding you .. there are many that profess that but the morsels are scarce and diffident .. assessed as an absence of desired grace and meaning ..
that shall ever be the gravitational pull of sensibility ..
works fine .. mostly does not work - disaster !
the fear of not working is immense , for when shared the feel is ever that the value of its commerce comes first in the mind of the proposer, not its intensity of the gravios ..
and that stops me in the tracks .. philosophical
do it your own sense and privacy .. do not give or share .. what you think and create, if that is what can be defined, then keep it closeted within ..
If the linked wires of the soul and the verbiage live apart in oblivion , then best to be in ONE than in the company that may have been desired or proposed .. to the OTHER ..
and the OTHER has a remarkable dissertative potential of doctorate assessment ..
It does .. seems odd and insignificant but it does .. the annals of the language say so and debrief ..
The word "other" is a linguistic prism refracting the complexities of identity, inclusion, and the nuanced interplay of differences. It serves as a vessel through which we navigate the multifaceted landscape of human experience, illuminating the myriad shades that define our relationships, perceptions, and understanding of the world. At its core, "other" denotes that which exists beyond the scope of the self or the familiar. It embodies the essence of contrast, highlighting distinctions and delineating boundaries. In societal discourse, it often assumes a role that transcends mere semantics, assuming a position of immense significance in discussions of diversity, belonging, and the fabric of human interactions. The concept of the "other" is intrinsic to our social dynamics. It molds our perspectives and influences our attitudes toward those perceived as different or dissimilar. This construct, while inherently dichotomous, blurs the lines between inclusion and exclusion, often reflecting societal norms and power structures. The "other" can be a means of fostering unity through appreciation of diversity or a tool for marginalization and alienation. One of its most profound implications lies in its ability to shape our understanding of identity. It is instrumental in the formation of self-identity, as individuals often define themselves in relation to the "other." This comparative element contributes to the tapestry of personal identity, underscoring the significance of context and interaction in shaping who we are. Moreover, the "other" extends beyond the human realm, permeating fields such as philosophy and anthropology. Philosophically, it raises questions about the nature of existence and the boundaries of perception. Anthropologically, it serves as a lens through which societies classify and understand different cultures, practices, and belief systems. In contemporary discourse, the notion of the "other" has garnered heightened attention in discussions surrounding inclusivity, equity, and social justice. Embracing the "other" involves transcending biases, dismantling stereotypes, and fostering empathy. It calls for a recognition of shared humanity while honoring the richness of diverse perspectives and experiences. However, navigating the terrain of the "other" is not devoid of challenges. It requires a conscious effort to transcend preconceived notions and embrace pluralism. Genuine understanding necessitates active engagement, empathy, and a willingness to celebrate the diverse tapestry of existence. In essence, the word "other" encapsulates a paradoxical duality – a divider and a unifier, a source of both division and enrichment. It compels us to confront the multifaceted nature of our reality, urging us to embrace the richness of diversity while acknowledging the inherent complexities within our shared human experience. Embracing the "other" opens gateways to profound insights, fostering a more inclusive and compassionate world.
😂
a reading to last you an entire weekend ..

“Flame” by Fayetape
Finnick Odair x Reader
Word count: 1854
CW: Angst, typical THG stuff
Summary of series: Reader and Finnick met when they were very young. They experience the horrors of Panem together as they grow up. Throughout the years they fight for a happy ending. Whatever that may look like… Angst/Fluff/Smut/Series/Minimal use of Y/N!
Important note: The reader starts out very young but there is a time skip, don’t worry!
Hey everyone! My name is Faye. This is my first story I’ve ever published on here. I’m very new to this. This is the first part of my series “Flame” I hope you guys enjoy! Feel free to leave any constructive criticism or suggestions in the comments :)
Chapter One: Promises
A short white dress was displayed on her twin-sized mattress. The dress was beautiful. White and lacy. Tied with small, delicate ribbons on the shoulders and in the middle of the chest. Any other day she would have been delighted to have found such a gift. She knew what it meant. Reaping day. Her first one too. All the people of district four get dressed up in their sunday-best to be forced to watch as two of their children ages 12-18 get sent off to the games, almost certain to die. This time her life was part of the draw. She had no other choice but to put on the dress. Against her own will she kept thinking about this process as if it was one of her last times ever to do such a simple thing. Last time undressing. Last time tying a ribbon. She sighed anxiously and put on a pair of white tights and black buckle mary-janes. It felt like she was preparing herself to die or dressing herself up for her own funeral. She heard the sizzle and cracks of her mom cooking in the kitchen. Her mother had been quiet lately. She had a thought. It’s because she knows her daughter has a chance to be taken from her, even when her daughter is all she has, the capitol spares no mercy. Disturbed by these thoughts, the girl walked past her mother without saying a word, only exchanging a sullen glance as she turned the handle of the front door.
“Y/N! Hey!” a recognizable voice yelled in the distance.
“Finnick! Hi.” She was excited to see him, but today there could only be but so much happiness in her voice.
He walked over to her and put an arm around her shoulder, “I like your dress.”
She didn’t say anything in response.
“Look, I know today is scary, but your name is only in that bowl once out of hundreds of other slips. You’re gonna be fine.”
Finnick was older. He had already gone through the horrors of being part of the reaping for two years now. He knew how to navigate it, at least more than she did. He took upon himself some unassigned duty to protect her from the moment they met. This was the one thing he couldn’t shield her from and it made him feel unsettled. The very least he could do is be realistic and try his best to console her. He looked down at her. She was still quiet. He let go of her shoulder and held her hand. He stroked her hand with his thumb and led her into a nearby field. They would go here when things got hard. Not that they would talk about it much. Not many people knew about it or dared to explore it. Technically it was off-bounds to district four and they knew they could get in a lot of trouble with the peacekeepers. Regardless, they both agreed that a little bit of risk was healthy. He checked in all directions to make sure nobody was watching before he reached ahead to pull branches aside to clear a path. The landscape never failed to hypnotize them. A luscious field with an array of diverse greenery and wildflowers sloping down a hill to the marsh. The sound of light wind blowing through the grass and the small creek bubbling instantly calmed their nerves. Even Finnicks, as much as he tried to hide his fear.
They pushed through the tall grass onto the path they carved out several years ago. Walking until they got to the bottom of the tall, gentle hill. He always loved the water. He let go of her hand and he sat down on the damp ground. He shot her a glance proposing her to sit down.
“I don’t want to get my dress dirty.”
“You mean your MOM doesn’t want you to get your dress dirty. Since when did you care about dirt?”
He was right. She lifted up the skirt of her dress and sat down on a patch of grass that looked cleaner than the rest.
He looked over at her, a few feet away, “Not gonna dare to get any closer, huh?” He always flirted like this. Bold enough to get her attention, but sly enough to give her plausible deniability.
“Today is the one day I can’t get messy. Tomorrow I’ll take more of a risk, okay?”
He laughed, “See? You do know that it is going to be okay!”
“What?”
“You said tomorrow. You know deep down that it’s gonna be fine.”
She rolled her eyes, “I just forgot about it for a second..”
That was good enough for him. They sat in silence for a few minutes listening to the sounds of the bugs and frogs in the marsh.
“Hey,” he said.
“I’m not moving closer.”
“Fine.” He scooted closer to her.
Instinctively she put her head on his shoulder. He smiled.
“Finn? Can you promise me something?”
“Yes?”
“Promise you’ll always take care of me like this ?”
“Yes.” He said without any hesitation.
“You promise?”
“Of course.”
“I need to hear you say it,” she said.
“I promise. You know I’ll always take care of you. I won’t leave you alone, love.”
After that she just stared at him for a while, “Okay,” she said and looked back at the morning sky.
“Hey,” he said in a quiet voice.
She looked over at him and he nervously grabbed her chin and pulled her in. She didn’t resist. The two stared at each other with their faces so close before he leaned in and gave her a swift kiss on the lips before letting go.
They sat in silence for a bit. “Was that okay?” He asked nervously.
Through slightly labored breath she said, “Yeah. Of course.”
He smiled, “Was I your first?”
“No,” She giggled playfully.
Matching her demeanor, “Yeah right.”
“How would you know? Maybe I kissed that boy on Dove Street.”
“You don’t even know his name!” He exclaimed, “Plus I worked my ass off to keep those dumbass neighborhood boys
off of you.”
“Yeah whatever!” She said and swept sand onto his lap.
He dramatically put his hand over his chest, “How could you!” and splashed dirty water in her direction.
“Finnick!”
“You started it!” It was too
late, her dress was already muddied. “I’m sorry, baby.”
“Baby?”
“Sorry. Was that not okay?” he asked her.
“No. No. It’s okay,” she paused, “Are we dating?”
He laughed at her innocence. “If that’s what you want.”
“Is that what you want?” she asked anxiously.
“Of course.”
“Okay then.”
“Okay then,” he confirmed.
Just as he was about to kiss her again, they heard the sound of the warning bell.
“Shit.” He pulled her up and they ran back up the hill away towards their town.
Once they got out of the field they ran their separate ways towards their houses, breathlessly exchanging goodbye glances.
Panting and sweating she ran across the railroad tracks towards her small house. Slowing down once she could see the white paint chipping off the frame. She heard the front screen door slam shut.
“Where have you been?” Her mother yelled, “What the hell happened to your dress?”
Catching her breath she tried to find a believable excuse. Before she could explain her mother grabbed her arm and dragged her inside.
“Were you with that boy again? He’s so disrespectful.”
Her mother was always one to hold a grudge. She couldn’t let go of the time that Finnick purposely broke one of her daughter’s toys when they were younger. Ever since then she thought of him as a bully, even though he was only eight at the time and wasn’t trying to be malicious.
“No,” She tried lying.
Her mother didn’t say anything in response and just continued to wipe down her dress with a wet rag.
Her mother smoothed out her dress, “Come on. Let’s go.”
They hurried their way to the town square.
“You’re gonna be fine.” Her mother kissed the top of her head. “I love you.”
“Love you too, mom.”
They separated and she was pushed forward by the peacekeepers before she could even look back. They pricked her finger and checked her into the drawing system. Her throat burned and there was suddenly a deeper hole of anxiety in her chest. Reality was setting in. Her eyes darted across the space searching for Finnick. Panicking when she couldn’t find him.
“Hey,” He said on the other side of the barrier.
Her shoulders untensed ever so slightly. She smiled at him.
The chatter of the crowd stopped as the stage microphone rang out ear piercing frequencies.
“Ahem,” the announcer decorated in a ridiculous, loud purple dress spoke, “Welcome to the 65th annual Hunger Games!”
As if waiting for an applause the woman paused, “Alright then. We won’t waste anymore time here.”
She dipped her hand into the bowl swirling the strips of paper. “And the female tribute for the 65th annual Hunger Games iss…”
The girl held her breath. Feeling like she was going to faint or die right then and there.
“Julianne Halmbern!” the crowd gasped.
The pit in the girl's stomach disappeared for a split second. Not her this year. Then it set in. A girl who lived on the poorer side of the district. She hardly knew her but she still felt sickenly guilty for being relieved. Another person she knew would be sent to almost certain death. She watched as the crowd parted, making a path for the poor blonde girl, Julianne. She was stiff in fear and disbelief as she was guided up on stage.
“And the male tribute iss…”
“Finnick Odair!” The announcer exclaimed as if she had just announced the lottery.
Y/N’s stomach dropped. No. No. The crowd parted and revealed sweet Finnick. She watched his every move. She watched as he stood there in utter shock, then as he took small steps up to the stage.
“Finnick!” she cried out.
The peacekeepers were getting impatient as they ushered him to the front. “It’s okay!” he yelled out to her.
She wanted to run to him. The older girl next to her noticed her expression and held her arm protectively preventing her from charging the boy. “Finnick!”
He stepped onto the stage, hiding tears in his eyes as she yelped out for him. He thought the sound of her screams was more disturbing than getting chosen like this. Even in this moment he felt the need to console her. Before the woman in the obnoxious dress could say anything else he yelled, “Y/N! I promise! Okay? I promise!”
She nodded through her sobs. She knew he was promising to make it back to her. He vowed not to leave her alone. She tried her best to believe him. To trust him. Her thoughts raced. He was a career. He trained for this. He’s going to be okay. No. He’s fourteen. He can’t. I can’t- No. She cried harder.
And they took him away.

against the logic of the lawn
Imagine a box.
This box is sealed with tape or adhesive, which shows you that it has never been opened or re-used. It is in pristine condition. Apart from that, the box could hold anything. It could contain a Star Wars Funko Pop, a printer, a shirt ordered from some sketchy online vendor, a knockoff store-brand cereal, six individually wrapped protein bars.
As a Consumer ("the" Consumer) this is your fundamental right: To purchase a box that is, presumably, identical to every other box like it.
When you Buy Product, it arrives in a box, entire of itself and without context. It has not changed since its creation. If and when Product does change—whether it is broken, spoiled, used up, or eaten—you can Buy Product that is identical in every meaningful way to the original.
It's okay if this doesn't make sense yet. (You can stop imagining the box now.)
Imagine instead a suburban housing development, somewhere in the USA.
Imagine row on row of pristine, newly built houses, each constructed with small, meaningless variations in their aesthetic, all with beige or white vinyl siding and perhaps some decorative brick, all situated on identical rectangles of land covered with freshly unrolled sod. This is the Product that every consumer aspires to Buy.
I am not exactly—qualified, or entitled, to speak on the politics of land ownership in this country. My ancestors benefited directly from the genocide of Native Americans, which allowed Europeans to steal the land they lived on, which is where a lot of wealth comes from in the end, even today. However, I have eyes in my head to see that the act of colonizing a continent, and an economic system that formed as a supporting infrastructure to colonization, have embedded something almost irreparably dysfunctional into the dominant American culture's relationship to land.
This dysfunctional Thing, this Sickness, leads us to consider land to be a Product, and to consider a human upon the land to be a Consumer.
From this point of view, land is either locked into this relationship of control and "use" to varying extents, or it is free of human influence. People trying to reason about how to preserve Earth's biosphere, working within this framework without realizing, decide that we must "set aside" large areas of land for "nature."
This is a naive and, I would reckon, probably itself colonialist way of seeing things. It appears to be well-validated by evidence. Where human population is largest, there is less biodiversity.
But I find the broad conclusions to be strikingly unscientific. The plan of "setting aside part of Earth for nature" displays little curiosity about the mechanisms by which human presence impacts biodiversity. Otherwise intelligent people, perhaps caught up in the "bargaining" phase of climate grief, seem taken in by the idea that the human species gives off a magical anti-biodiversity force field, as if feeling guiltier will fix the problems.
(Never mind that lands managed by indigenous folk actually have MORE biodiversity...almost like our species' relationship to the planet isn't inherently exploitative, but rather, the capitalist and colonialist powers destroying everything.......)
Let's go back to the image of the new housing development. This image could be just about anywhere in the USA, because the American suburban home is made for universal interchangeability, where each little house and yard is static and replaceable with any other.
Others have written about the generic-ification of the interiors of homes, how houses are decorated with the most soul-killing, colorless furnishings to make them into Products more effectively. (I think @mcmansionhell wrote about it.)
This, likewise, is the Earth turned into a Product—razed down into something with no pre-existing context, history, or responsibility. Identical parcels of land, identical houses, where once there was a unique and diverse distribution of life. The American lawn, the American garden, the industry that promotes these aesthetics, is the environmental version of that ghastly, ugly "minimalism" infecting the interiors of homes.
The extremely neat, sparse, manicured look that is so totally inescapable in American yards originated from the estates of European aristocracy, which displayed the owner's wealth by flaunting an abundance of land that was both heavily managed and useless. People defend the lawn on the basis that grass tolerates being walked upon and is good for children to play, but to say this is *the* purpose of a lawn is bullshit—children are far more interested in trees, creeks, sticks, weeds, flowers, and mud than Grass Surface, many people with lawns do not have children, and most people spend more time mowing their lawn than they do doing literally anything else outside. How often do you see Americans outside in their yards doing anything except mowing?
What is there to do, anyway? Why would you want to go outside with nothing but the sun beating down on you and the noise of your neighbors' lawn mowers? American culture tries to make mowing "manly" and emphasizes that it is somehow fulfilling in of itself. Mowing the lawn is something Men enjoy doing—almost a sort of leisure activity.
I don't have something against wanting a usable outdoor area that is good for outdoor activities, I do, however, have something against the idea that a lawn is good for outdoor activities. Parents have been bitching for decades about how impossible it is to drag kids outdoors, and there have been a million PSAs about how children need to be outside playing instead of spending their lives on video games. Meanwhile, at the place I work, every kid is ECSTATIC and vibrating with enthusiasm to be in the woods surrounded by trees, sticks, leaves, and mud.
The literal, straightforward historical answer to the lawn is that the American lawn exists to get Americans to spend money on chemicals. The modern lawn ideal was invented to sell a surplus of fertilizer created after WW2 chemical plants that had been used to make explosives were repurposed to produce fertilizer. Now you know! The more analytical, sociological answer is that the purpose of the lawn is to distance you from the lower class. A less strictly maintained space lowers property values, it looks shabby and unkempt, it reflects badly on the neighborhood, it makes you look like a "redneck." And so on. The largest, most lavish McMansions in my area all have the emptiest, most desolate yards, and the lush gardens all belong to tiny, run-down houses.
But the answer that really cuts to the core of it, I think, is that lawns are a technology for making land into a Product for consumers. (This coexists with the above answers.) Turfgrass is a perfectly generic blank slate onto which anything can be projected. It is emptiness. It is stasis.
I worry about the flattening of our imaginations. Illustrations in books generally cover the ground outdoors in a uniform layer of green, sometimes with strokes suggesting individual blades of grass if they want to get fancy. Video games do this. Animated shows and movies do this.
Short, carpet-like turfgrass as the Universal Outdoor Surface is so ubiquitous and intuitive that any alternative is bizarre, socially unacceptable, and for many, completely unimaginable. When I am a passenger in a car, what horrifies me the most to see out the window is not only the turfgrass lawns of individuals, but rather, the turfgrass Surface that the entire inhabited landscape has been rendered into—vacant stretches of land surrounding businesses and churches, separating parking lots, bordering Wal-Marts, apartment complexes, and roadsides.
These spaces are not used, they are almost never walked upon. They do nothing. They are maintained, ceaselessly, by gas-powered machines that are far, far more carbon-emitting than cars per hour of use, emitting in one hour the same amount of pollution as a 500-mile drive. It is an endless effort to keep the land in the same state, never mind that it's a shitty, useless state.
Nature is dynamic. Biodiversity is dynamic. From a business point of view, the lawn care industry has found a brilliant scheme to milk limitless money from people, since trying to put a stop to the dynamism and constant change of nature is a Sisyphean situation, and nature responds with increasingly aggressive and rapid change as disturbance gets more intense.
On r/lawncare, a man posted despairingly that he had spent over $1500 tearing out every inch of sod in his yard, only for the exact same weeds to return. That subreddit strikes horror in my heart that I cannot describe, and the more I learn about ecology, the more terrible it gets. It was common practice for people in r/lawncare to advise others to soak their entire yard in Roundup to kill all plant life and start over from a "blank slate."
Before giving up, I tried to explain over and over that it was 100% impossible to get a "blank slate." Weeds typically spread by wind and their seeds can persist for DECADES in the soil seed bank, waiting for a disastrous event to trigger them to sprout. They will always come back. It's their job.
It was impossible for those guys to understand that they were inherently not just constructing a lawn from scratch, and were contending with another power or entity (Nature) with its own interests.
The logic of the lawn also extends into our gardens. We are encouraged to see the dynamism of nature as something that acts against our interests (and thus requires Buy Product) so much, that we think any unexpected change in our yard is bad. People are sometimes baffled when I see a random plant popping up among my flowers as potentially a good thing.
"That's a weed!" Maybe! Nonetheless, it has a purpose. I don't know who this stranger is, so I would be a fool to kill it!
A good caretaker knows that the place they care for will change on its own, and that this is GOOD and brings blessings or at least messages. I didn't have to buy goldenrod plants—they came by themselves! Several of our trees arrived on their own. The logic that sees all "weeds" as an enemy to be destroyed without even identifying ignores the wisdom of nature's processes.
The other day at work, the ecologist took me to see pink lady's slipper orchids. The forest there was razed and logged about a hundred years ago, and it got into my head to ask how the orchids returned. He only shrugged. "Who knows?"
Garden centers put plants out for sale when they are blooming. People buy trees from Fast Growing Trees dot com. The quick, final results that are standard with Buy Product, which are so completely opposite the constant slow chaos of nature, have become so standard in the gardening world that the hideous black mulch sold at garden centers is severed from the very purpose of mulch, and instead serves to visually emphasize small, lonely plants against its dark background. (For the record, once your plants mature, you should not be able to SEE the mulch.)
Landscapers regularly place shrubs, bushes, trees and flowers in places where they have no room to reach maturity. It's standard—landscapers seem to plan with the expectation that everything will be ripped out within 5-10 years. The average person has no clue how big trees and bushes get because their entire surroundings, which are made of living things (which do in fact feel and communicate) are treated as disposable.
Because in ten years, this building won't be an orthodontists' office, in ten years, this old lady will be dead, in ten years, the kids will have grown, and capitalism is incapable of preparing for a future, only for the next buyer.
The logic of the lawn is that gardens and ecosystems that take time to build are not to be valued, because a lush, biodiverse garden is not easily sold, easily bought, easily maintained, easily owned, or easily treated with indifference. An ecosystem requires wisdom from the caretaker. That runs contrary to the Consumer identity.
And it's this disposable-ness, this indifference, that I am ultimately so strongly against, not grass, or low turf that you can step on.
What if we saw buying land as implying a responsibility to be its caretaker? To respect the inhabitants, whether or not we are personally pleased by them or think they look pretty? What creature could deserve to be killed just because it didn't make a person happy?
But the Consumer identity gives you something else...a sense of entitlement. "This is MY yard, and that possum doesn't get to live there." "This is MY yard, and I don't want bugs in it." "This is MY yard, and I can kill the spiders if I want to."
Meanwhile there is no responsibility to build the soil up for the next gardener. No responsibility to plant oaks that will grow mighty and life-giving. No responsibility to plant fruit-producing trees, brambles, and bushes. None of these things, any of which could have fulfilled a responsibility to the future. Rather, just to do whatever you damn well please, and leave those that come after with depleted, compacted soil and the aftermath of years of constant damage. It took my Meadow ten years to recover from being the garden patch of the guy that lived here before us. Who knows what he did to it.
The loss of topsoil in all our farmland is a bigger example, and explains how this is directly connected to colonialism. The Dust Bowl, the unsustainable farming practices that followed, the disappearance of the lush fertile prairie topsoil because of greed and colonizer mindset, and simple refusal to learn from what could be observed in nature. The colonizing peoples envisioned the continent as an "Empty" place, a Blank Slate that could be used and exploited however.
THAT is what's killing the planet, this idea that the planet is to be used and abused and bought and sold, that the power given by wealth gives you entitlement to do whatever you want. That "Land" is just another Product, and our strategies for taking care of Earth should be whatever causes the most Buy Product.
It's like I always write..."You are not a consumer! You are a caretaker!"

Ancient Roman Elite Necropolis Discovered in Italy
A two-year dig to install a solar power plant near Rome has unearthed an ancient Roman necropolis containing 67 skeletons buried in 57 ornate tombs.
Archaeologists were baffled by the find — thought to date between the second and fourth centuries — not least because the skeletons were discovered wearing golden jewelry and expensive leather footwear, inside tombs designed to resemble their homes.
The discovery, on a 52-acre patch of land close to the ancient city of Tarquinia, north of Rome, was a surprise to authorities, despite the area being renowned for such findings.
Silver rings with amber and engraved initials, precious stones, terracotta pottery, coins, shiny glasses, amulets and even items of clothing were found alongside the golden necklaces and earrings.
“We found several skeletons still wearing their expensive stockings and shoes,” Emanuele Giannini, lead excavation archaeologist at the site said. “All these riches, and the fact that the bones show no sign of stress or physical labor, (leads us to believe) these weren’t local farmers, but upper-crust members of Roman families coming from cities.”
Giannini said techniques of “pre-emptive archaeology” such as field surveys and trial trenches were used to identify potentially ancient constructions below ground.
“We did have a faint idea that some treasure could lie there, as historical sources mentioned the location of a postal station for travelers near the site,” explained Giannini. “Many Romans would stop (here) for the night to eat and rest, but the magnitude of the discovery is unmatched.”
The diversity of funerary objects laid near the remains, and the luxurious designs and linings inside the tombs, have led archaeologists to believe that the occupants wanted to recreate heavenly spaces similar to their earthly homes. The interior of many tombs originally featured elaborate cloth linings, or were surrounded and covered by tiles or terracotta pieces like little houses.
Giannini said another astounding aspect is that most of the discovered tombs were communal — built for at least two occupants who likely shared a family link. A few skeletons were found wrapped around each other.
“Building tombs for entire family nuclei is a typical ancient Roman trait,” he said, “but these are outstanding in their inner decor, which shows wealth and status.”
The shallow tombs were found just 20 inches below the surface — almost popping out of the grass — yet nobody had ever noticed anything peculiar.
The site’s unique state of preservation has been attributed to the fact that “huge limestone blocks that stick out of the ground (made) ploughing, seeding and modern farming impossible in the area,” said Giannini. “It has remained untouched (for) centuries.”
Findings from the dig, which started in 2022, are being preserved as they’re found and many are going on show at the castle of Santa Severa in the coastal town of Santa Marinella. The skeletons however, are being analyzed to determine their origins and will not be put on display until forensic tests have been carried out.
Whatever their genesis, authorities are certain more hidden wonders will come to light as digs for the solar park move to another nearby site.
“We are excavating a huge rural area to redevelop the land and are balancing the need to avoid ruining such unique wonders with the goal of boosting clean energy production,” Margherita Eichberg, art heritage superintendent of the provinces of Viterbo and southern Etruria for Italy’s Culture Ministry said. The area where the necropolis has been discovered will not form part of the solar park and will be cordoned off for safety reasons, without public access.
“This is the fascination and beauty of Italy: Each time there’s a dig, incredible wonders from the past come out of the ground which need to be preserved.”
By Silvia Marchetti.

TAURUS: The Taurus Midheaven represents the importance of material comfort and security in achieving life goals. While societal expectations may play a big role in defining success, you also value hard work, perseverance, and responsibility. It's no surprise that accumulating possessions, especially in a monetary sense, is a big part of determining success for you. But don't worry, you have other values too that are supported by your super-ego. It's important to remember not to get too attached to the trappings of success and to share its benefits with others. With this placement, careers in money matters, like accounting, stocks, bonds, and banking, could be advantageous for you. You also have artistic and creative talents that could bring financial gain or improve your reputation. Once you establish yourself in a profession, you value being in control and are unlikely to switch careers. Work and relaxation alternate in your life, and you possess characteristics like purpose, resistance, tolerance, narcissism, and mistrust. While you have good friendships, it's important not to rely too heavily on them. Overall, you're known for your capacity to work hard and enjoy life's pleasures. Keep up the good work!
GEMINI: You're in luck because you have many potential paths to success. You have a unique ability to stay objective, which makes it easier for you to define success on your own terms. However, it can be challenging to commit to a single goal since you're fascinated by many things. As a Gemini MC, your perception of success is likely to be conceptual, with a wide field of vision that suits you well in mental professions or those that offer diverse experiences. Stimulation, action, and communication are key to your professional life, and you thrive when recognized for your intelligence. You may even excel in multiple professions simultaneously, particularly those in the communication industry such as writing, publishing, or speaking. You're a great communicator, making you an excellent instructor and valuable in the communication field. You likely inherited your intelligence and realism from your opposite-sex parents, which contributes to your sociable nature and many friendships. Monotony and repetition are not your style, as you strive for creativity and diversity in your life and work.
CANCER: Your Midheaven is in the sign opposite its natural position in Cancer, which means that your emotions have a big impact on your decision-making. Your family and their traditions have likely played a significant role in shaping your values and beliefs. If your family embodies the same values as your ego and super-ego, you may not notice much difference in behavior from someone with a Midheaven in Capricorn. Because your super-ego has a strong influence, you may tend to conform to societal norms and avoid conflict. However, when it comes to your personal needs and desires, you may prioritize them over societal expectations. This can sometimes be perceived as unreasonable by others who don't understand your emotions and subconscious motivations. You have a unique perspective and a good understanding of people. You may change your career path a few times, but you're intelligent and take ownership of your professional responsibilities. You value stability and a solid income, and you're successful in service and mercy-oriented professions. You prefer to work in a team and are sensitive to criticism, but you also have a longing for independence. You have a small circle of close friends and prefer quiet conversations over big social events. You have a diplomatic approach to achieving your objectives and try to avoid conflicts with others. Overall, you're a one-of-a-kind and eccentric personality with a sensitive and impressionable nature. It's important to be aware that suppressing your emotions can lead to skin problems, so it's important to take care of your mental health.
LEO: You're likely to have a strong and fiery energy and enjoy seeking control and authority. Sometimes this desire to express yourself and follow the demands of your super-ego can come across as dominant, but it can also provide greater freedom for you to define and express your individuality. You take pride in your work and have a desire to achieve something in life. You may be drawn to careers in education, finance, or even the public spotlight, as you enjoy being acknowledged and praised for your efforts. It's important for you to shine in your career and gain recognition, but you know that it takes hard work to get there. You have a strong sense of self and are self-assured in your abilities, but you also demonstrate subtlety, adaptability, charm, and diplomatic abilities. While you can be powerful and ambitious, excessive autocracy is something to be mindful of. It's okay to work on your own as you prefer to be in control, but it's important to also acknowledge the efforts of those around you. You're responsible for your own decisions and actions, and you have a strong desire to make a difference in the world. Overall, you're an optimistic and noble individual with a strong desire for success and personal growth.
VIRGO: You are likely to be focused on achieving success and professional accomplishments. You have a natural talent for assessing events and paying attention to details, and you work effectively with others to achieve your goals. You have high standards for yourself and may strive for perfection, but it's important to remember to be kind to yourself and not become too critical. In terms of career, you may be drawn to fields that involve communication, such as publishing or the electronics industry. You could also excel in administration and enjoy working in an office setting or a job that requires a lot of travel. It's important for you to have cerebral stimulation and to feel like your work is making a positive impact on society. You have a practical and prudent approach to life, and you enjoy bringing structure and organization to your surroundings. You may be interested in careers that involve teaching, nursing, or the service industry, and you are always looking for opportunities to improve your skills and make a difference.
LIBRA: So, here's the deal: there's this natural square thingy between the Midheaven and the seventh house naturally ruled by Libra, which may not always align perfectly with your super-ego objectives. But hey, that's not the end of the world. If you've got a Libra MC, you've got some serious skills when it comes to using your social prowess to chase those super goals. The only issue arises when your desire to maintain harmony and accommodate others in your professional life starts overshadowing your ego's need for super achievement. If that happens, you might find yourself always bending over backward for others at the expense of your own success, or focusing too much on connections for the sake of it instead of how they can help you reach your goals (and your ego's goals too). Now, to keep you motivated and nurture those ideals of competition, responsibility, and accomplishment ingrained in your super-ego awareness, your super-ego likes to remind you that you should prioritize being courteous to others. And let's be honest, these two messages can sometimes clash in your mind, leaving you with a boatload of guilt. It's like you feel guilty for either using others to get ahead or for letting people walk all over you and missing out on your own shot at success. But fear not, my friend! The key to resolving this inner conflict lies in using your people skills and abilities to bring harmony and balance to any situation. When you merge your interpersonal affinities with your goal of achievement, magic happens. Seriously! You can achieve success, satisfy your ego, and make your super-ego proud all at once. It's like becoming a master at turning your social connections into career opportunities. Your creative flair can come in handy in fields that deal with aesthetics. You might excel in industries like gemstone cutting, jewelry design, interior design, and décor. And let me tell you, in public, you come across as attractive and graceful. It's like you've got that natural charm that draws people in.
SCORPIO: You're seriously determined to achieve your big goals. Like, you've got this intense drive to succeed, and it's all tied up with your subconscious desires and the idea of what success means to you. Getting that success and meeting those super high expectations gives you a sense of emotional security. When your status or chances for success are threatened, you can feel pretty intimidated. It's like you're willing to do whatever it takes to make sure you come out on top and get that super ego approval. Sometimes that might mean using your power and influence to climb the ladder. And if you can't get there yourself, you'll probably try to surround yourself with people who have that power. But hey, here's the cool part - you've got some seriously keen insight and intuition that can help you reach your goals and fulfill those super high expectations. You're a natural-born leader, and you've got some impressive self-control and discipline. Just be careful not to go overboard with your need to control everything to ensure success. You've got this strong desire to be recognized at work, and you're not afraid to dig deep and put in the hard work. I wouldn't be surprised if you're drawn to careers that involve research and resource gathering. And get this, you might find yourself working near or on the sea. Like, maybe you'll own a seafood restaurant on Fisherman's Wharf or dive into the world of underwater applications. You could even find your calling in medicine, working in a lab or researching diseases. Once you've made up your mind about your career path, you're not one to easily change direction. You're driven and focused on achieving your goals. You might even be interested in industries like soda, beer, or chemicals. But watch out for partnerships that could hinder your independence and desire to run your own show. People see you as powerful and strong in public, and you've got this mysterious, passionate, and slightly pessimistic detective vibe going on.
SAGITTARIUS: You have an advantage when it comes to handling ego-driven aspirations and achieving success. The fiery and expansive qualities of Sagittarius, along with the influence of Jupiter, make it easier for you to seek success in unconventional places and expand your horizons in pursuit of your ambitious goals. This naturally increases your chances of finding a path where you can thrive. The energy of Sagittarius also means you'll be enthusiastic and driven to accomplish your objectives. One thing to be mindful of with a Sagittarian Midheaven is setting your goals too high and taking on more than you can handle. Individuals with this placement often have grand visions of achievement and ambitious schemes to reach their goals. While having a vision can be instrumental in achieving success, it's important to strike a balance and not overreach. Taking calculated risks and enjoying the journey toward your goals are key. It's crucial to find satisfaction in your work or the role assigned by your ambitious self. Careers in government service, particularly in diplomacy or consular roles, might pique your interest. You might also be drawn to positions in the private sector, such as representing a large corporation in a foreign country. Financial markets, including credit institutions, stock markets, banks, accounting firms, and insurance companies, could spark your interest. The field of international trade, particularly in the maritime industry, offers opportunities for success. If you put in the effort, the publishing industry can also bring you a certain level of achievement. In essence, as you choose and pursue a specific profession or occupation, you have a favorable influence working in your favor. Your positive mindset toward your goals keeps you motivated, and as long as you work hard, you won't lose yourself in your work. Remember that you don't have to dedicate your entire life to just one job; you have a natural talent for sales, and your friendly and optimistic demeanor shines through. Careers in travel, teaching, writing, public speaking, expansion, or working with people from different cultures might resonate with you.
CAPRICORN: If you have a Capricorn Midheaven, it means you're all about those super-idealistic ego goals and aspirations. This is especially true when your tenth house doesn't have any planets in Aquarius. You're more inclined to chase after and achieve those ego-rewards through your super-ambitious pursuit of accomplishments. We're talking about going for that dream job, aiming for public recognition and status, or making some other socially useful achievement. Now, if you can't quite reach those goals, don't worry, you'll keep striving for them. You might start looking up to someone who embodies success or feeling a twinge of envy towards those who make it big, according to your super-concept of success. Capricorn characteristics are just the ticket for fulfilling those super-objectives. You've got motivation, ambition, a strong work ethic, a practical mindset, and a focus on the material world (being an Earth sign and all). Keep improving your skills, working effectively within organizations, and staying disciplined, and you'll eventually reach those objectives. Even if you don't quite hit the jackpot of success and prestige, at least you can take pride in knowing that you were responsible and did what you were supposed to do. This gig is perfect for starting and growing a successful business, but brace yourself for lots of hard work and patience. Your organizational skills and management prowess will help you climb the ladder to executive positions. You might find yourself thriving in the manufacturing industry, especially in producing everyday goods that people need. Whether you're working in the office or getting your hands dirty on the ground, you'll have various responsibilities in the mining business. Selling land and real estate can be a lucrative venture for you, and your perseverance will give you an edge and possibly set you up to start your own business. You approach things slowly, steadily, and with caution, giving off an air of determination and practicality. Success is likely to come later in life after years of hard work and gradual progress.
AQUARIUS: When it comes to this house, the super-ego might face its biggest challenge in dominating the psyche, especially with a Uranus-ruled Aquarian Midheaven. But hey, here's the thing, you might be able to find a way to balance the self with the ego and embrace those individualistic tendencies of Aquarius. Even if you manage that, there's still a chance of some conflict between your ego and super-ego. The super-ego's rules and directives can really rub you the wrong way with your Aquarian Midheaven. You just want to be free, you know? Free from all those rigid rules and predetermined goals that the super-ego has set for you. But here's the twist, even though you associate "freedom" with "success," the super-ego still plays a role in motivating you to achieve. You might see yourself as someone who's liberated from the traditional careers and organizations that hold others captive, as you pursue your own ambitions, doing things independently and even breaking a few rules along the way. You're more likely than most to find success on unconventional paths. Even if you outwardly conform, your approach to achieving your goals and contributing to an organization is likely to be innovative and out-of-the-box. In any job or company, you're all about seeking maximum autonomy for yourself. It could mean following the organization's rules (both written and unwritten) in order to climb up the ladder where you're above the rules or at least not accountable to others. You've got that visionary spirit, always drawn to careers or professions at the forefront of technology or finding new ways to do old things. Your interests are wide-ranging, from aircraft and computer technology to electronics and beyond—anything that tests your mental abilities. You might find fulfillment in writing, architectural design, or running a new-age bookstore. Whatever path you choose, one thing's for sure: it's gonna be unconventional and unpredictable. In your career, you bring a unique approach to the table, always doing things differently. You're a big-picture thinker, always planning for the long run and knowing exactly what you want right from the start. And here's a fun fact: despite feeling a bit uncomfortable, you actually work well in a group or in front of a crowd. Deep down, you'd rather have your work noticed than yourself.
PISCES: The sextile between Pisces and the natural Midheaven (Capricorn) offers opportunities, but it can also pose challenges for those with a Pisces Midheaven. Your ambition is fueled by a desire to succeed in various areas, but you may struggle with the discipline and structure necessary to actually achieve your goals. As a result, you might have a general desire to follow societal expectations, but lack the specific direction and motivation to take action and accomplish what you want. With so many different goals to consider, you may find yourself not focusing on any one of them in particular. This can lead to a lack of clarity regarding your life's path, vague thoughts that you should be doing something, or high levels of anxiety about success or failure. Others may perceive you as indifferent, disorganized, or unsure about where you want to go in life. However, with proper guidance and enough structure and discipline, both internally and externally, you can make significant progress and achieve success. Trusting your instincts will often guide you on the right path to success. Your natural inclination towards wholeness allows you to understand the hopes and aspirations of others, making you a unifier. This ability can help motivate others while also working towards your own objectives. You have a strong affinity for water, which may inspire you to pursue a career in marine biology, fisheries, or managing a maritime company that covers various aspects, from tugboats to salvage operations. Careers in healthcare, particularly those involving patient services like nursing, may also resonate with you. You are inclined towards occupations that are off the beaten path, where you can work alone or in small settings. Examples include working in prisons, hospitals, reformatories, or sanatoriums. You may develop strong emotional connections with the people around you, as they share similar experiences, or you may become deeply attached to your chosen field and spend a significant amount of time in it.
