Are atoms (proto-)conscious? This is something that philosophy is generally positing as an explanation for conscious as part of panpyshic revival, but does it sound reasonable?

Anthropologist David Abram develops an animistic (all objects have a spiritual essence) account of reason itself. He holds that civilised reason is sustained only by intensely animistic participation between human beings and their own written signs. If we adopt this logic, then by calling forth the word ‘Consciousness’ we raise its spirit. We start to see atoms, everything embodied with this ghost.

To exorcise consciousness from the Universe we must remove its label and sense the ineffable, experience the indescribable. However, this perspective does not sit well with our subjective experience of the World. Is it better then to assign a property of spirit to everything?

We are human, no different to those Indigenous peoples who ascribe a personhood to a human, a bear and a rock. Is it our world of symbols, ascribed through information, that has led science to posit the fundamental fabric of the Universe is information as if it were a reality? It appears to me that it we are only displaying the same human behaviour as did our anscestors. Has it taken 1,000s of years to return to what was our ancestors understood, that everything is conscious, everything has personhood?

Is it now time to learn from those that still hold the animistic worldview to recover our own personhood? Can we use their wisdom to save all personhood from the ‘human-masterrace’ by re-entering a reciprocal relationship with them? I don’t see much choice.

Reality is a purely parallel process, atemporal in the sense that cause and effect are indistinguishable.
