my best near headcanons: he has multiple congenital disabilities impacting joint inflammation, deformation, hypermobility, nystagmus, and a variety of other miscellaneous disabilities that heavily affects how much he walks and the way he walks. when he’s not on the ground he’s using forearm crutches and AFO ankle+foot braces for stability and pain management. i think it would be cool to see mello with all of his harbored feelings, but still refusing to be cruel enough to not help get near his crutches when it’s time for lunch
I love how specific you got with these, thanks for sharing! I learn something new every day through you guys 🖤
And I’M DIGGING the thought of Mello showing compassion towards Near - that’s such a strong gesture, showing so much character, holy shit--

Albinism is a congenital condition characterized in humans by the partial or complete absence of pigment in the skin, hair and eyes. Albinism is associated with a number of vision defects, such as photophobia, nystagmus, and amblyopia.
Yeah, I want to show off my albino-Berg headcanon, and so what? Yeah, I don't understand how in hell his hair ever must look like (I know it's more about short and straight + maybe some shaved out parts, but, uh... chardesign is difficult, okay?). Yeah, I want to express his photophobia by making you photophobic with as much eyestrain as my own eyes are able to bear.
No, I am not stepping away from the trail of angst I swear on Broken God's name for it! And yeah, I'll be posting out something interesting in relation to that in a few days, hehee. (Though, okay, no, you're not getting it, it is still an angst because if you read these images as a story - Iceberg takes off his glasses and puts them away, then stares at the sun and shrieks in agony - yep, we're still on the right path!)

Jane's family tree 2/2
(The Seymour family has Leber Congenital Amaurosis (LCA), an Inherited Retinal Disorder (IRD). It's a family of congenital retinal dystrophies that results in severe vision loss at an early age. Patients usually present with nystagmus, sluggish or near-absent pupillary responses, severely decreased visual acuity, photophobia, and high hyperopia. It is the most severe retinal dystrophy causing blindness by the age of 1 year in most cases. The white pupil represents who inherited the disorder)

So for those of you who are unaware, I'm visually impaired. I have a rare genetic retinal disorder, congenital nystagmus, generally bad vision and astigmatism.
I bought new glasses today since my vision got worse again (yay for adult progressive myopia I suppose.) My insurance covered $250cad of the $717cad total. I paid the other $467cad out of pocket, which I don't really have the money to do alongside my other expenses.
I'm on government disability and am paying off student loans, so I don't have a lot of money to spare for things like this, but not having functioning glasses isn't an option.
If anybody has any money to spare (please only if you have extra) and would like to help, I have a Ko-fi, but please don't feel pressured to give. I know that things are hard for everybody right now.
This is the bill. It was $309.99 per lens and $99 for the frame, totaling to $717.00. Insurance (the name of which is censored for privacy) covered $250.00, and the remaining patient total is $467.00

Qorbyn Ozwen, Post Vol .3 Character Sheet
Heyooooo, as much as I would’ve loved to shade this bad boy, the layer limit (and my way of shading) disallowed me from doing that. But it still looks great!
To all my friends whom are also artists, this is the official Qorbyn reference sheet in case you ever want to draw her!
I’ll be making another ref sheet for her weapon when I can find the energy lol.
I will also be creating a more cohesive pallet drawing for Qorbyn too.
(Click/tap for better quality)
Anyways, some quick facts about Qorbyn’s outfit!
- Qorbyn’s under shirt and pants are actually a jumpsuit.
- Qorbyn made her clothes herself however she had someone custom make her shoes.
- Qorbyn’s outfit consists of a lot of breathable, yet nice and warm fabrics. Her shoes are even breathable!
- Qorbyn’s case for Vendetta holds both bidents, one on top of the other. When she’s in a situation where she knows there may be trouble, she carries both Vendetta of the Empty out of it’s case. If she knows things will be at rest, she’ll have them inside their case. However if she’s unsure, she’ll have Vendetta out still. If she’s caught off guard, she’s taught herself the quickest way to take Vendetta out of it’s case, but typically will only take one bident out instead of the two.
- Qorbyn refers to Vendetta by feminine pronouns! Similarly to how sailors refer to their boats or ships.
- Vendetta of the Empty’s name, while brooding and kinda edgy, actually has a very personal meaning to Qorbyn. She used to be called “empty” by peers for not having a semblance or an aura. Vendetta represents her fight against the expectations of people.
This is precisely why I chose for her to leave Vendetta behind, because of what it’s supposed to represent. She’s still tying herself to the expectations of people around her, trying to strive to meet them. Her leaving Vendetta signifies that she’s still letting those expectations dictate what she does.
- Qorbyn made the first concept for Vendetta when she was in 6th grade! It was a doodle on a science test that she got back after it was graded. From there she began refining the design.
- Qorbyn made Vendetta herself! Similarly to how Qrow and Olivia made their weapons.
- Qorbyn’s signifying colors are Red, Black, and Gold! But mainly gold haha
- Qorbyn prefers not to wear an eyepatch over her blind eye because the heat and sweat that generates underneath it in hot weather is uncomfortable to her. She does however wear one in Atlas to prevent the cold from causing them to tense up too much.
- Qorbyn is completely blind in her right eye, but she’s made up for it by training her hearing in her right ear to be able to hear better.
- Qorbyn is nearsighted, light sensitive, and has mild congenital nystagmus (the author also had these! Along with a few other eye problems and severe congenital nystagmus)
- Qorbyn (similarly to her pops) freckles super easily in the sunlight! So in Vacuo she’ll definitely have freckles all over. Although she can’t seem to keep them for very long until they fade :(

Hi let me introduce myself
I’m Abi
I’m 23.
I live in the uk.
I have congenital nystagmus (from birth, involuntary movement of the eyes).
I got the official paperwork done when I was 7 but have been wearing glasses since I was 10 months old (I have the hospital records of that eye test).
I am going into first year having done a foundation year last year.
I use a symbol cane not a long cane and people constantly confuse it for a long cane or ignore it. One lady where I volunteer thought it was a pointer .
When I’m able I volunteer with English heritage at a local site
Unlike HIV living in an actual genuine person(if you want a deep dive on that mess, well there’s YouTube videos on the topic)
I’m in and out of different doctors offices for different things some where I’m attending uni and some where I grew up cos I’m fairly local but moved into dorms for independence.

**Congenital Aniridia Overview**
* **Definition**: Congenital aniridia is a rare hereditary condition marked by the complete or partial absence of the iris, affecting about 1 in every 50,000 individuals globally.
* **Effects**: This condition results in various visual challenges, including diminished visual sharpness, heightened light sensitivity, and difficulties with depth perception.
* **Care Strategies**: Individuals often benefit from the use of visual aids such as glasses or contact lenses, coupled with support systems to help them adapt and succeed.
* A major hurdle for those with congenital aniridia is reduced visual acuity.
* The lack of an iris, which normally regulates light intake, can lead to unclear and fuzzy vision.
* Such visual limitations can hinder everyday tasks, including reading, recognizing faces, and moving through different environments.
* Another significant issue is light sensitivity, or photophobia.
* The absence of the iris makes the eyes more susceptible to bright light, resulting in discomfort and pain.
* To alleviate light sensitivity and safeguard their eyes, individuals often wear sunglasses or tinted contacts.
* Challenges with depth perception are also prevalent among those with congenital aniridia.
* The missing iris negatively affects the eye's focusing ability and distance judgment.
* This can complicate activities like catching objects, navigating stairs, and moving through crowded areas.
**Related Conditions**
* **Amblyopia**: This condition arises when the brain fails to fully process visual input from one eye, often due to factors like strabismus, ptosis, or cataracts occurring in the crucial first six years of life.
* **Buphthalmos**: Buphthalmos describes an abnormal enlargement of the eyeball due to elevated intraocular pressure, potentially leading to stretched eye tissues and damage to the optic nerve, which can impair vision.
* **Cataract**: Individuals with aniridia may develop cataracts, although surgical intervention is only necessary if their vision is significantly compromised.
* **Glaucoma**: This condition is characterized by increased pressure within the eye, which can result in irreversible optic nerve damage and loss of vision if not addressed promptly.
* **Nystagmus**: Nystagmus refers to involuntary eye movements, which are thought to result from foveal hypoplasia, typically manifesting within the first few months of life in those with aniridia.
* **Ptosis**: Ptosis involves the drooping of the upper eyelid, which may create an appearance of drowsiness or intoxication. Surgical correction may be required if it severely obstructs vision.
* **Strabismus**: Commonly known as crossed eyes, strabismus occurs when one eye diverges from the intended line of sight. Early treatment through surgery or patching can effectively realign the eyes.

Achromatopsia
Achromatopsia is a congenital condition characterized by the absence of color vision, photophobia, and nystagmus. Fundus autofluorescence (FAF) imaging in achromatopsia may show normal or subtle abnormalities in the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) typically reveals structural changes in the photoreceptor layer, such as the absence or disruption of the…

This might be kind of a weird question, but would someone who has had nystagmus since birth be able to have schizoaffective disorder, and if so, would they experience visual hallucinations?
Don't worry about questions being weird!
This answer is gonna be long, I apologize in advance!
Small disclaimer that we don't currently have blind mods, but this answer is based on research.
So, a 2011 research study seems to suggest that being born congenitally blind or going blind very early in life 'protects' against developing schizophrenia later in life. I know you mentioned schizoaffective disorder, but it is closely related to schizophrenia that it is relevant to this discussion; the treatment for both is very similar, as well. If you've ever seen the claim "No blind person has ever been diagnosed with schizophrenia," this is probably where it comes from.
The study itself has a 2012 commentary (which is what I linked above) that mentions that it might not be definitive, and that what might be happening is that both conditions are uncommon enough that a joint occurrence is therefore much rarer; especially because it specifically refers to congenital or early blindness, as opposed to blindness that can happen later in life. It also refers specifically to blindness as opposed to low vision/visual impairment, which may or may not be what your character has.
From it, I quote:
"[I]t is remarkable that in over 60 years, and with several investigations [including several before DSM-III (1980) when criteria for schizophrenia were broader than at present], not a single case of a C/E blind schizophrenia patient has been reported."
As well as:
"These data suggest a unique relationship between C/E blindness and schizophrenia. However, we acknowledge that the absence of evidence (of people with both conditions) is not evidence of absence."
Now, from what I know of nystagmus, it often causes visual impairment/low vision as opposed to exclusively blindness, which is a significantly lower visual acuity. The study speaks specifically of congenital blindness, which is often the lowest visual acuity or maybe just light perception or similar.
Doing elaborate research study math, if your character is visually impaired rather than legally or totally blind, this means your character is more likely to be able to develop schizoaffective disorder than a character who is legally or totally blind. The chances might still be low, but I feel it's an existing possibility, taking into account the information I have about all of these.
Additionally, whether they're able to experience visual hallucination will likely depends on whether they've ever experienced visual information. Someone who never has experienced visual information due to being born totally blind will not experience visual hallucinations, because that part of their brain isn't "turned on," so to speak, and wouldn't have anything to go off of. But they could experience auditory hallucinations, or tactile ones.
Anyway, I know this doesn't give you a definitive answer because I could not find one, but I hope this helps!

Dizziness - Causes, Symptoms And Treatments: Regain Your Balance - Manipal Hospitals
Imagine a world painted in blurred strokes, where clarity is a distant dream. For children affected by paediatric cataracts, this isn't a hypothetical scenario—it's a harsh reality. Recent data reveals an alarming rise in paediatric cataracts, impacting not just vision but also the development of these young minds. But there's a glimmer of hope: advancements in cataract surgery offer a pathway to fix clarity and transform lives. Let's explore the medical miracles to restore the lost colours of our young future.

Understanding Cataracts in Children
Cataracts are typically associated with ageing, and can also affect children. These cloudy formations within the eye's lens hinder vision. While cataracts in children are relatively rare, affecting around 3 out of every 10,000 kids, their impact is profound. It not only disrupts vision but also impedes vital developmental milestones. Effectiveness in treating paediatric cataracts largely depends on early diagnosis and tailored interventions. Various types of paediatric cataracts exist, often classified based on their location within the lens or the underlying cause. Congenital cataracts, occurring at birth, and developmental cataracts that manifest in early childhood, are among the common types.
Identifying Paediatric Cataracts
Detecting paediatric cataracts demands a keen eye for subtle signs. Parents should remain vigilant for indications like crossed eyes, rapid eye movements, or an unusual clouding in the eye's pupil. Diagnostic tests, from basic eye exams to specialised imaging techniques like ultrasound or MRI, help confirm the diagnosis before the top ophthalmologist in Kolkata suggests a cataract eye surgery. Some of the prominent signs and symptoms are listed below:
Clouded, blurry, or hazy vision
Abnormal eye movements (nystagmus)
Poor depth perception
Light sensitivity
Rubbing or squinting of eyes
Tumblr media
Diagnostic Tests and Imaging Techniques to Identify Cataracts in Children
Accurate diagnosis relies on comprehensive eye examinations, including:
Visual acuity tests
Slit-lamp examinations, and
Dilated eye evaluations
Advanced imaging techniques such as:
Ultrasound
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) and
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
The above diagnostic tests and imaging techniques aid in assessing the extent and nature of the cataract.
Surgical Procedures - Paediatric Cataract Surgery
Paediatric cataract surgery is intricate due to the developing eye structures. Specialised techniques like paediatric intraocular lenses (IOLs) and minimally invasive procedures cater to these unique challenges. Advanced surgical approaches, including phacoemulsification and aspiration, enable precise removal of the cataract. Additionally, the implementation of capsular tension rings and iris hooks assists in stabilising the lens capsule and maintaining optimal conditions during the cataract surgery procedure.
