ACOTAR college AU bc I can. I originally wrote this while avoiding a math quiz and I just found it in my drafts.
Riceand
Political Science fashion design double major, you can pry this hc from my cold dead hands.
Comes from a long line of successful politicians, but fashion's the passion. Especially formal wear. Could've gone Ivy league bc of Daddy's money and influence bs, but decided to go to where Cassian and Azriel committed instead
Cassian
Probably Sports Medicine major and plans to become a certified personal trainer after college. He's on the fencing team, and in multiple martial arts clubs.
Somehow he got stuck with Eris as a roommate so he usually crashes in Azriel and Rhysands room.
Azriel
Computer science major with a focus in Cyber Security. He interns with Rhys's dad over the summers. As good as Azriel is at building firewalls, he's better at breaking them down
Feyre
Miss maam doesn't go to college. She had a Fiona Gallagher moment and dropped out of school to support her family. Eventually she starts dating Tamlin, who is like, this successful business owner in some sort of plant/gardening thing. He encourages her to get her GED. At some point she ends up with Rhysand and he encourages her to go to college and she gets a degree in Art and opens a successful gallery with art lessons.
Elaine
This bitch is an Ag major. She wants to open one of those super fancy bouquet shops after graduation. It's giving Lily Bloom
Nesta
Miss maam is a double major in political science and dance. Her mother made her choose poli sci as a major so she would prepared to be a senator's wife.
Once she and Rhys get over their little (huge) pissing contest they bond over their asshole controlling parents
She and Elaine met the bat boys when Feyre invited them over for a Christmas party. She doesn't go to the same school as they do, but an all-girls one about a 30-45 min drive away depending on traffic.
She eventually becomes a personal trainer.
Morrigan
She didn't go to college because her parents suck and tried to marry her off instead. She ends up being a polygraph operator ;)
Amren
She went to college. No body knows where or what her major was.

Madrid Week 2: Taking Time
Hola a todxs! Niko here again, back for week 2 of studying abroad in Madrid. This week felt nearly as long as my first one in the city. Class started on Monday. Thankfully, schoolwork has been pretty light thus far, so I’ve had the spare energy and time to focus on adjusting to the new schedule, commute, and teaching/class style at UC3M, all while attempting to make new friends with Spanish, American, and International students from across Europe (and Oceania!). Also, I took a weekend trip to Granada in the southern region of Andalucía — more on that later.
SCHOOL STUFF (ACADEMICS?!)
With the first week now under my belt, I wanted to quickly touch on my academic experience so far in Spain. This semester, I’m taking a Spanish language class for international students, and three classes in English for a both national and international students: “Social groups and their cultural imaginaries” (a mix between philosophy and culture, INTERHUM 300 equivalent), “Materials Science and Engineering” (MATSCI 220 Equivalent), and “Databases and Structures” (EECS 400 Level Equivalent). Given that I pass 🙏, all of these classes should count towards my degrees (aerospace engineering major, international minor for engineers, computer science minor).
School at UC3M is quite different than it is in the states. Most notably, the grading system is unfamiliar. At Michigan, a big emphasis is put on required assignments that are due throughout the semester — homeworks, problem sets, mini projects, etc.. These required assignments force students to continuously engage with the content, which I feel improves focus and learning (if the assignments are completed with the right intention). At Carlos III, the final exam constitutes 60% of the final grade for the vast majority of classes, with the remaining 40% of “continuous assessment” depending on things like in-class quizzes and one-off assignments.
With no homework to keep me on track, I’m gonna have to pay close attention to make sure my classes don’t fall to the wayside with all of the 1,000,000 other distractions in Madrid (and Europe) vying for my attention. I’ve already decided to switch one class (Neural Networks) because I thought it would require a level of effort that I simply wasn’t prepared to put in while I’m abroad with bigger priorities than school (namely, exploration, self growth, meeting people, etc.).
This is a shift in itself that I’m going to have to get used to — for my entire life, performing well in school has been at the top of my list. However, while in Spain, all I need to do is pass (get a 5/10, 50% overall) for my credits to transfer with no effect on my GPA, so that’s what I’m shooting for now. I’m certain that this will cause some internal conflict (e.g.: a 60% on [x] quiz?! Oh no!!! tbh math 216 already got me over those bad grades tho lol) when things start to pick up, but I guess we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.
ON RELATIONSHIPS
Going into my study abroad experience, my biggest goal was to understand the culture of Madrid & Spain from a local point of view. I knew from studying in Buenos Aires that living in a different city can be a much more enriching experience than touring it for vacation, so long as I put in the effort. A big part of that goal was to make friends with people local to Madrid, along with other Americans*/ International students who shared that same mindset. I think that in explicitly setting this goal, I inadvertently put a lot of pressure on myself to make all these friends really quickly, in an environment and language I’m unfamiliar with, all while trying to adjust to and internalize a major lifestyle shift.
As a result, I think that — up until this week — this self-imposed pressure gave me unnecessary anxiety that inhibited me from being my true self. I spent time worrying about whether the Spanish students in my class would like me, if my Spanish was good enough to communicate with them, if they would judge me for being an American, how soon I should message the new person I met in the cafeteria so I wouldn’t appear too clingy… the list goes on. I was stressing and strategizing to make friends, when the best strategy is always to just be myself.
This is a lesson I’ve learned during my transition to Michigan, but being implanted into a new environment and University gave me a bit of a factory reset. I had to remind myself that I’ve only been here for 2.5 weeks. Directing my attention inwards instead of outwards will enable me to be fully present (and able to overcome the initial discomfort of making new relationships [see week 1 for discussion on discomfort]) when people that I can click with inevitably come along. Through this process, I’ll undoubtedly develop a stronger relationship with myself and increased comfort being alone, which is another personal goal of mine.
Funnily enough, that’s how things started to turn out in the second half of the first week. When I caught myself overthinking and was able to redirect my focus, I slowly started to reach out and become more friendly with some of the Spanish students in my culture class, and I met a group of Spaniards by chance that I really vibe with at the club on a Wednesday (oops, sorry it’s syllabus week :P ). Simultaneously, I’ve begun to get closer to some fellow American study abroad students. By no means have I found the perfect group of friend-soulmates that I’ll proceed to travel and experience Europe with for the rest of my 17 weeks in Spain, but that wasn’t something that I was ever expecting, anyways. Moving forward, I’m going to do my best to avoid resisting flow, always assuming positive intent to keep myself open to new interactions (check out what I mean by this by watching this video clip from a speech Mark Rober gave at the MIT graduation, I highly recommend the whole video), all the while prioritizing my own peace and happiness.
This weekend, I also visited Granada, a small town in the south of Spain famous for its Moorish influence and the incredible La Alhambra palace nestled in its hills. I might cover the trip in more detail next week, I guess we’ll see… but it was a beautiful weekend filled with beautiful architecture, beautiful sunsets, and great company. Per usual, check out the photo captions for some more context.
Until next week :)

*A LONG ASIDE ON THE WORD “AMERICAN”, for context & completeness
I would like to be clear about my use of the word "American". In English, there is no succinct way to say “Person from the United States of America”, unlike other nationalities (Spaniard, Argentinian, Norwegian, etc). American is the best word that we have. However, in conversations about US culture with people from other countries, I’ve been met with a similar critique in multiple instances (both with Europeans and South Americans). The Americas include the entire continent of North America and South America, which encompasses a huge variety of countries, cultures, and nationalities. When saying the word “American” while describing a person from the United States, we are inadvertently reinforcing the narrative that the United States is the most significant country across both continents and thus more righteously deserves the blanket term “American” over any other country in the region.
This conclusion is obviously more nuanced than what I’ve stated. The United States of America uses the word “America” in its name, which is likely where this blanket term came from. Also, I don’t think that the perpetuation of this US-centric language is due to intentional individual action, but rather a result of complicated cultural and etymological phenomena which I don’t have a comprehensive understanding of.
I won’t stop saying American in these blogs — primarily because saying “person from the United States” each time would likely distract from the points I'm trying to make — but I felt that an acknowledgement of this common criticism was important. In Spanish, Estados Unidos = United States, and US citizens are more precisely described as “Estadounidenses” (although the word “Americano” is still commonly used). When introducing myself to people from other countries, I always do my best to use the most precise language possible when referring to my nationality, which is one of the many ways I practice cultural humility. Stay tuned for another blog sometime this semester about how I go about practicing cultural humility, something that I think is very important for Americans who come from one of the most — if not the most — influential countries on earth (something that has also become apparent through my conversations).

New Yorker cracked Britain’s premier quiz show
Brandon Blackwell, 22, earned about $400,000 after appearing on “Jeopardy!” Teen Tournament, “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” and other shows, The New York Times reported.
Blackwell aspires to become even better, wanting to turn quizzes into a full time job. The more he thought about it, the more he realised that he would have to move to London.
“Eight of the top 20 quizzers on the planet lived there. It’s the epicenter and competing in the city was the only way I was going to improve quickly.”
Blackwell, who has a degree in computer science from New York University, applied to Imperial College, a science and engineering school with about 20,000 students, located in the South Kensington section of London. Imperial had not won the “University Challenge” since 2001, but Blackwell knew that when players entered to answer questions, the name of the school was revealed, followed by the player’s name.
So he would have to yell ‘Imperial Brandon!’ I’m a ‘Star Wars’ fan. I loved that.

For instance, “to take a test” has so many regionalisms it’s difficult to list them all. In Mexico you’re probably going to hear presentar un examen. Some places will say hacer un examen, some even put it as el maestro / la maestra pone un examen a los estudiantes.
The default way of saying “to take a test” is dar un examen which is literally “to give an exam”, because you hand a test in to your teacher. Along the same lines, the default way a teacher “gives a test” is tomar un examen because they “take” the tests that the students turn in. For that reason, dar un examen is often translated as “to sit for an exam” to help the meaning come across more easily.

Apps for education
Technology has had a huge impact on children and education during the last few decades. Education used to be associated with wealth, but times have changed. Children's education is no longer a pipe fantasy. It is cost-effective. Even middle class households may buy a cell phone with application download capabilities.
While the app store is flooded with options, finding the appropriate one for your child might transform their perspective on the learning process. Educational apps are making things easier for children to understand. Children typically find books to be laborious and uninteresting, but replacing them with colorful pages and moving animations may make studying a lot more enjoyable.
Some of the free Educational Apps for Students:

I once got celebrated for hobbling the education of an entire AP English class.
I went to high school in a very small town; my graduating class had around 80 people. So my senior year was the first time it offered any courses aimed at prepping for the Advanced Placement tests that earn college credits, theoretically thus getting you out of freshman General Ed requirements. I ended up taking all four that were offered: AP Computer Science, AP US History, AP Calculus, and AP English. Because this was the pilot year, the teachers ran the courses with varying degrees of change from their previous versions; for example, the CompSci teacher used her regular Pascal syllabus until December, when she handed the two of us who expressed interest in taking the test the list of topics that would be on it, and which we'd have to teach ourselves in the next three months.
(I did not end up taking the AP Comp Sci test.)
But the AP English course was pretty well handled, following the designated syllabus in most ways, except for one thing. There was a weekly set of vocabulary words, which you were expected to be able to both define and use in a sentence on the quiz each Friday. This teacher had long been accustomed to doing this in her other Senior English classes, and she'd always had the caveat that if a student could do those things for a word when it was introduced on Monday, it wouldn't be on the list. I think the idea was to encourage being well-read, and to negate anyone's advanced knowledge.
The trouble was me. I invariably knew every word she came up with. Now, I learned to read early and habitually read anything within arm's length; this included, by that stage in my life, a lot of paperback fantasy and science fiction novels, with those genres' penchant for language games, but also mythology, meta-mythology like Frazer's The Golden Bough and Joseph Campbell's The Masks of God tetrology, books on science and technology, computer philosophy like Gödel, Escher, Bach, and, failing all else, encyclopedias and dictionaries.
Our Monday ritual was her writing a half-dozen words on the board, and me defining them. I knew every word on the lists she had, and then she struggled mightily to come up with new ones. She pretty much lost heart for the project by January.
(I tried offering a few words once — I remember specifically "anthropomorphism", which she recognized, but only from a theological context — but I don't think it helped.)
We never had a single vocabulary test the whole year. Everybody in class appreciated this, though looking back, it probably didn't help them in the long run.

2 with beau? ❤️
Happy almost end of blurb weekend!

2.“I won’t let you do this alone.”
Warning: contains science
Word Count: 557
____________________________
You let out a groan so loud it was practically a scream. Nothing was more frustrating to you than studying for an exam, something that you told yourself you would never do again once you graduated college. Yet, there you were, sitting at the kitchen table, flashcards, blank pieces of computer paper, three open textbooks, and upwards of 100 colored pens scattered around you and your computer, studying for an exam.
“I like those groans better when they come from the bedroom,” Anthony says, poking his head into the kitchen. “They’re more fun when you make them because you’re happy.”
He comes up behind you, rubbing your shoulders in an attempt to relax you. “Why the fuck did I think it was a good idea to get a master’s degree?”
“Because you'll have more knowledge and make more money.”
“Ok, but why the fuck did I think it was a good idea to get one in chemistry of all subjects? Who likes chemistry?”
“You do. You have piles of notes next to our bed and you read them for fun before we go to sleep each night.”
“Fuck, I do, don’t I,” you groan, putting your head down on the table. “This is the worst idea I’ve ever had.”
“Hey, you’re going to be fine,” your boyfriend says, sitting down next to you and grabbing a stack of your flashcards. “I’m sure you know more than you think. I’ll quiz you.”
“Are you even going to know if I’m right?”
“If you made the flashcards right, then I’m sure I can figure it out,” he says, tapping them on the table to get them all even, flipping through the first few of them. “I’m not going to let you do this alone.”
“Fine,” you say begrudgingly, not sure this was even going to work.
“Alright, what are the two ways to prepare an alcohol from 1-methyl-1-cyclohexene?” he starts, struggling through the name of the compound. “This isn’t English.”
“You’re right, it’s organic chemistry. It’s a whole other language.”
“Well, what are they, though?”
You groan, knowing that he was going to have no idea what you were about to tell him. “The first is hydroboration, which is oxidation, and it’s syn-addition, and follows an anti-Markovnikov hydration. So the BH3 attacks the cyclohexene, and one hydrogen adds on to the same carbon that has the methyl group attached to it, while the BH2 attacks to the other carbon involved in the double bond, trans to the methyl, forming the intermediate. Then hydrogen peroxide attacks and the hydroxide replaces the boron group and yields trans-2-methylcyclohexanol,” you rant, Anthony nodding along as you explain to him the second one.
“Yes, fuck, babe, you got it perfectly!” Anthony yells, getting up to kiss you. “How about, every question you get right, you get a reward from me?”
“I like incentives, but it depends on what they are,” you tell him, giving him another kiss before he sits back down.
“Every question you get right, is one night where you have complete control in the bedroom. Anything you want, I will do, no questions asked,” he offers, taking one of the unused sheets of printer paper to keep tally.
“I like the sound of that,” you tell him. “What if I get it wrong?”
“I have control.”
“Deal. Ask me another question.”

hi! how have you been since the hell that ensued after halloween is?
also could you do a batboys college au? like their major and how the reader would meet them and all that jazz? 👉👈
-🐥
hi anon!! i’m not sure what ur talking about @ the halloween stuff hvsdhjs but! here are the batboys hc’s! i’m not very familiar with duke thomas’s character enough to write about him tbh, so he’s not included here :( but if you want me to add him let me know!! i hope you enjoy!!
dick grayson
out of all the batboys i really didn’t know how to choose a major for him
but
i think he’d do law tbh, specifically criminal law
his main motivation to become a police officer in bludhaven had been to be able to help people in any way he can
i forgot if it’s canon or not but he does realize how corrupt it is and he quits but that’s another thing we won’t get into that lmao
anyways yes let’s just stick with law
meeting you !
he shares one or two courses with you
one that’s really early in the morning
and one that’s later on in the afternoon
dick is like a magnetic okay
anywhere he goes people are just attracted to him
like literally he will breathe
but someone call the ambulance there’s a person that’s passed out bc of how beautiful he is
but this is an 8 am class 😃
so there’s no way ur awake enough to notice him
coincidentally he sits next to you one time
and this is the one time
you decide
yeah lemme just fkn sleep is uni even worth it
dick definitely notices right away but he doesn’t say anything
he thinks you look so cute passed out on your desk like this 🥺
when the professor signals the end of the class, he watches as people file out and then he just leans over and nudges you slightly
you nearly punch him bc he scared you ❤️
he just laughs and goes “class is over”
you just sigh like the guilt starts to hit you and your heart begins to sink
and he sees your disappointed face and just goes
“i took a lot notes. i can share them w you?”
lifesaver in every single way dick grayson 😻😻😻
you had another class that you had to run to and you were rushing
he was like “dw i’ll just give them to you whenever i see you next”
and you 🏃🏻♀️ outta there
imagine ur surprise when u enter class at 12 pm and he’s there in all his glory
after the lecture is over, he walks up to you as you’re packing and asks if you want to go to the coffee shop nearby
to take his notes of course
and you finally register just how handsome he is
so obviously you say yes wtf
and the rest is history 😼
he asks you out, properly, pretty early on tbh
so unfazed lmfao
now you take naps on his shoulder instead of the desk 💞💞💞
soooo into pda
kisses u when he first sees you
when you’re parting ways
when he feels like it
straight up cuddles w during lectures i’m not even joking
it’s disgusting how cute you two are
gets you coffee for all those 8 am classes u have w him hehe
study dates always turn into karaoke sessions somehow don’t even ask lmao
jason todd
english literature
this is a collective agreement right?
right
definitely english literature
i dont even think he wants to go to uni but he’s going to waste time plus this is bruce’s money 😏🤑
your major doesn’t necessarily have to be english literature as well
but you share one class
and my god
you two disagree on everything
like every little thing
at this point if he says something and you slightly agree internally you’ll still say some opposing shit
that’s kinda what draws you to him
at first you genuinely had nothing against him
but then this kind of rivalry developed for no specific reason
but it was fun
and he was hot
so seeing him get flustered or angry made him even hotter somehow
but then
but t h e n
you’re not sure if your professor like ships you or something
so you’re assigned a debate topic on one of the books you’d discussed in class/one of the books you’ve read outside, and within each group are the two sides for and against
not only were you in the same team as jason, but you were on the same side as him
so you had to work with him
the audacity of the professor omg
but jason needs this course
and
well you don’t but it’s too late to back out now
you two meet in the campus library after deciding on a book with the other two of your team
and
honestly???
you two work so well together
like insanely well
during the debate you destroyed the other team
spoiler alert
doing so well with jason kinda made you like hot and bothered
seeing him in his zone
sexy <3
what i mean to say is
you both end up making out in some storage room lmfao
or hate sex 😏
professor has a phd in matchmaking 🤔😻
i think you two don’t admit you like each other
bc you’re both stubborn as fuck
but eventually you’re literally on his lap on his couch and it just hits you
and you lean back and go
“wanna go out w me”
and he just shrugs and goes “sure” and pulls you in for more kissing hehe
he’s not v good at the boyfriend thing tbh
you have to chase him around and be like “sir!!! did u forget about me huh!!!”
he doesn’t mean to i promise
he gets all blushy and flustered once he realizes
only ever into pda if he’s insanely jealous
will straight up make out w u regardless of where u are or who ur with lmfao
he’s still getting used to the little intimacies and all
debates in class are so much more fun now cause he finds it so hot when u get all riled up hehe
that eng lit professor is so happy for you two omg
tim drake
okay i also couldn’t really decide for him
but maybe he’d study something like physics (or maybe computer engineering/computer science)
idk u have to have a death wish to wanna major in physics so tim’s major it is
i’m not sure how it works for every other uni but my uni requires 6 credits of sciences to graduate
so let’s say for the sake of this hc u take like just the first level of physics to get 3 credits
and
you’re struggling 😃👍🏼
so you like approach your professor with a few questions before the quiz
but tim is also there
and he kinda makes small talk while you two wait outside the office
and he asks why you’re here
you show him
and he’s like “oh i took this course w the same professor as well, i could help?”
it’s like an angel had descended from the heavens for you personally
you take his number and decide to meet up with him after a few hours
he’s of so much more help than your professor would’ve been, even if ur prof is a really nice and smart person
and he’s super like
patient with you?
also he pays for all the coffee and snacks you’re getting after you already get them
ur like bruh i didnt
dont pay pls
and he’s like no im loaded let me 😼
swooning <3
and guess what!!
you ace the quiz out of some miracle
first thing you do is text him and he congratulates you
and then
bc ur not blind and tim is so fucking cute
you’re like “can i take u out to thank u”
tim’s brain stops working but !
he does say yes eventually
he becomes your designated physics tutor + your amazing boyfriend
being with tim is so like
chill
it’s a very relaxed time
lots of study dates! and cafe dates! all hours of the day whether the sun is up or not
into pda but to a certain degree
like yes of course have a kiss pretty baby
but also it will only be a small peck
any time anyone passes by like common rooms you two will be there snuggling on the couch, one or both of you completely passed out
damian wayne
business major 100%
or a bsba econ major, which is basically the business side of economics
he has to take over his father’s company one day duh
also i genuinely think damian would excel in this field
he’s a very keeps to himself kinda guy in uni
like you only ever see him in your common classes and then he just
disappears
anyways there was this party that everyone was going to, and damian wasn’t planning to
but dick accidentally read some groupchat’s messages and was like are u going
damian went 🏃🏻♀️
but dick was like go and try to make friends !!!!
and dames cant say no to his big bro 🥺 so he goes
stays in a corner on the settings app the entire time
like half an hr in he just leaves and is walking home/back to his dorm when you come like rushing up to him
you’re zooming
and then you just latch onto his hand and lean up to press a kiss to his cheek, whispering in his ear “this person’s been following me for like 15 mins just please go along w this”
he kinda stiffens but when he does notice that there’s a person eyeing you he slips his arm around your waist and just carries on walking
he walks you to your home/dorm and is like
so awkward
but it’s okay ! ur a people’s person enough for the two of you
you thank him so much over and over
and then you’re like
“can i take you out on a real date?”
and then he becomes ur real boyfriend hehe
is still super stiff but it’s only bc he’s so hyper aware of how attractive you are
and i’m super positive he doesn’t have that much experience with dating so
you hold the reigns
but he’s a great boyfriend all in all tbh
super attentive, super protective, and so loving
isn’t into pda especially on college campus but he does like subtle pda
things like linking your pinkies or giving you his hoodie to just parade around campus hehe
end note; i’m sorry if these feel rushed or anything like. i used to be an avid writer for the batboys, but i just haven’t been feeling it lately. i still love to write from them bc i know these boys so well eeeeppp. anyways feel free to request some more!!

Hello!! I was wondering if you could ship me with a stranger things character? Totally ok if you're not doing them anymore, just ignore this then!!!
Appearance: I am 18 years old. I am a 5' 8.5" female-presenting genderfluid person. I'm not gonna lie, I do have a bit larger tits (nothing like super big, but they are there) and absolutely no ass unless I desperately grab for it. I am Nepali, so I have some south Asian mixed with East Asian features, but I am so pale from never going out, I can pass as white some days. Pretty long thin blackish-brown hair that reaches mid-back and is really wavy. Got some very faint acne scars on my forehead. Got my ears and nostril pierced, planning on doing my cartilage very very soon!!! I got a couple of burn marks, simply because I'm a bit clumsy and a little dazy sometimes. As for how I dress? Pretty feminine. I do dress very masculine some days, but I prefer to dress feminine just because it makes me feel super pretty!!!
Personality: I am a Hufflepuff through and through. No matter how many times I take the Pottermore quiz, I get the same thing. I fall under neutral good, I'm an INFP and a Taurus. I'm pretty quiet and love to read. If I talk to you once, you are immediately my friend. I can be really social at the drop of a hat and HATE awkward silence. I always have a new story or am trying to find something I have in common with other people. Socializing exhausts me, but I prefer it to be lonely. I'm constantly making stupid jokes and can be a bit mean sometimes.
Interests/Hobbies: Am a big reader. Gets to be a large problem sometimes. Like I will tell everyone I know, sorry I'm really busy, just to finish a book or read a Webtoon update. I like watching sci-fi/fantasy TV shows and prefer crime/thriller movies. When I read, I like action and romance so yeah taste is all over the place :D. I love playing video games, and coding is my number one thing rn. Actually going to college this fall and working towards a computer science degree with a concentration in video game development. I stream occasionally and don't have a large following, but it's really fun!! Love writing songs, and playing the acoustic guitar though I'm kind of saving up for an electric one cause I feel like more of the songs I write would sound better on that. Also currently writing a novel for funsies that has to do with Hindu mythology and fantasy worlds.
And yeah! I feel like this is a lot of information and definitley feel like I overshared. Hope I didn't overwhelm you :) Thank you for doing this, and keep doing you !!
Take care <3
Here you goo <33 :)
Stranger Things
Eddie Munson
When you said you didn't like socializing that much, I instantly thought of Eddie Munson. He keeps to himself much and he enjoys talking to people he likes. Otherwise he won't interact with you at all. I could defiantly see you guys playing video games together as well! He would be so fascinated by how creative and ambitious you are. He also loves that you have a big heart! You guys would meet probably outside of school somewhere. You were a friends with Dustin, Will, used to be Lucas, Mike, Max, and Eleven. Your friend group started splitting apart but as soon as Steve, Eleven, and Mike came back the group formed again. This time adding a couple other people like Eddie. You two really got a long and then eventually he saved you from Vecna at one point and you instantly fell for him. (he had already fell for you)
Hope you liked it!

got an English vocabulary score of top 0.27% and a Grammar score of top 0.10% on a quiz site i saw linked here
it surprises me how confident and experienced I am with English despite it not being my native language (first ~3 years of my life I was learning/speaking Tagalog because I lived in the Philippines until my family moved to the U.S.)
it’s also kind of worrying to think that i might not be able to fully leverage this in life, given my actual degree & career in Computer Science and software and all that. Hopefully my future employers aren’t STEMpilled and can appreciate a good essay/speech/presentation OR i have time outside of work to keep up my own writing projects
#also i want to learn a new language mostly as a means to keep my brain Wrinkled and Healthy#but there’s like 3 choices for me. spanish because it’s the second most common U.S. language#or Tagalog because it’s literally my native tongue and culture#or Japanese because i am lowkey a weeb + it has super different grammar/sentence structure than english#personaI

Week 1 - I’m a grad student!
This week was one of the hardest I’ve ever experienced. The learning curve to being a full-time working parent and grad student is STEEP. All the planning in the world couldn’t have prepared me for this. A few reflections (and wins!) from this week:
Reading textbooks and academic research is WAY different than my current guilty pleasure - Diana Gabaldon’s “Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone”. My eyes can’t seem to keep the words straight and jump around the electronic page. I long for a physical textbook (it’s on back order). That said, I do love the searchability (but I am an old and can also use an index :-)).
I completely over thought my first discussion post and assignment, but I got them in earlier than the deadlines. AND I did get a 100 on my first quiz! Now I anxiously await the discussion and assignment grades
Community is EVERYTHING! Just like my Women in Testing community, this cohort is amazingly welcoming and helpful as we learn together. We quickly found smaller study groups to share tips and check our thinking and help each other through the week
Office hours are important. Ignore the “optional”. I can’t make it to both for personal/family reasons, but my community has my back (and I have theirs). We share notes and talk about important things, like HOW TO READ A RESEARCH ARTICLE (start to finish? Oh no. Abstract first. Then conclusions. Then the stuff in the middle).
I’m also now not the same reader as I was in my youth. I need assistive technology. Bigger font. Better contrast. Read aloud options. Reading online triggered three migraines. Ugh. Keyboard navigation. As someone that’s been in Ed tech for 17 years some of the solutions I used this week PAIN me after having tested for accessibility.
BioSig? Lockdown browser? Security theater I say. I’m too old and worked too hard to even be tempted to cheat for what I want out of this degree. I’m actually offended it’s a thing. (Psst. It’s also ableist).
But enough about my experiences. What did we go over? This week was an intro to I-O psych
What exactly IS industrial and organizational psychology? A form of applied psychology, I-O psychology is the science of human behavior as it pertains to work. Industrial psychology aspects cover topics such as employee selection, performance management, procedures and processes, etc. Organizational psychology tends to look at areas like leadership, teamwork, and more. It’s rare to study one over the other, given the impact each has on “the other side”. My preference though right now is organizational ;-)
It was fascinating to see the impact of I-o psych throughout historical events. From selection methods in the army in World War I through more classification methods in World War II, an impact on civil rights and Americans with Disabilities acts. I’d never thought of it from that perspective before. And if you’ve never heard of Lillian Gilbreth go look her up. Too tired to write more about her right now :-)
One area that gives me pause, and I kind of dread the course, is employee selection methods. If science tells us that selection tests work, wtf happened to me? On paper I did not make sense. I had to take the Computer Programmer Aptitude and Battery test to get my job. I am pretty sure someone told me I did awful (omg I hate tests!). We have also since done away with that required part of the interview process. How do we ensure we consider the context of the individual? How do we check our biases and explore what biases may be introduced in these tests? Well, at least I have a few questions to go after when it’s time.
Another interesting thing we discussed was the scientist-practitioner gap. It’s almost like this field needs its own form of DevRel to make sure the science is making its way to the practitioners.
Anyway, a hard, but good week teeing up topics for the future - glad to see I’m at least still interested in (even if skeptical… hello performance management! It’s totally review season here and I still haven’t written mine up).
That’s all for now. Week 2 will be interesting as I’m slammed in work and life, but I have a tiny bit more confidence having made it through week 1. 1 down, 79-ish to go!).
Thanks to everyone that has reached out and supported me so far - especially on the days I wanted to quit (yes, already at least three of those). But especially to my husband, best friend and partner, Scott, who has been a tremendous help and encouraged me to stick with it as I cried myself to sleep on more than one occasion.

LOL so a) random conversations with strangers are happening again and b) my brain is still wired to have a freak-out bc SOCIAL DISTANCING stay away 6 ft!!! and c) i feel guilty as hell bc im vaccinated so shouldnt i not be freaking out even if we are all maskless? these are weird mental times guys.
anyway, we met a random dude with a super friendly little white dog (who tried to follow us home, possibly because we were carrying ice cream), and the guy must have heard my roommate say something bc he asked if my rommie went to penn state (yes) and then proceeded to tell us who all on the neighborhood street also went to penn state (cool!) and i confirmed that i am also a transplant from PA but pittsburgh instead, and the dude was like ‘oh uPitt!’ and i was like ‘carnegie mellon actually’, and to my surprise he recognized it and was immediately all ‘yes, known for science and acting!’ which like yeah, ok, but then he also added, ‘you must have gone for acting!’. which of course felt like those darn computer science professors assuming i was a ‘booth babe’ during all those S*GCSE conferences so i was slightly rude in asserting that i went there for computer science (i left out the art double major thing, it takes too long to explain) and instead of him launching into a quiz about all the computer science concepts i know, he accepted it without explanation and seemed disappointed and then i realized...wait...im in LOS ANGELES...where acting actually makes /more sense/, of course acting is going to be assumed to be the default, this isn’t like SF or seattle or some other city where there’s a high chance the random stranger you just met is a tech geek. anyway, it made me feel bad for being so gut reaction defensive over my ‘computer science’ nerd status. and made me laugh bc while yes, cmu actually is known for their acting department literally the rest of the school tries to forget about it (there’s a bridge connecting the drama building to the computer science building, i used to work underneath it, it was dedicated to the guy who founded our research project bc he ‘bridged’ the gap between theater and computer science, and there were secret penguins embedded in the computer driven design, and ANYWAY i loved it mostly because if you went out there to the middle of the bridge during snowfall at like 3am when only the most dedicated CS geeks were out, it was quiet and beautiful, and you could just lean against the opposite bridge wall and watch the rainbow colors change and dance) tldr i feel like i dont appreciate this city for what it is yet rather than what it isnt, and also walking outside in 90 degree heat is making rainbow bridges in the snow sound sooooo good right now.
#journal shit#i have to say i have a seen a number of steelers shirt around#and i saw ONE fat heads sticker on a red mini van that made me do a double take#in the middle of traffic like WHAT STATE AM I IN AGAIN????#of all the stickers to bring with you from the burgh they decide to bring a fat heads sticker
