And Week Six of Commute Radio! Somewhat shorter this time, partly because my tolerance for reading on trains seems to be stretching. Partly because I'm running low on music (but now I know where to find more!)
Mozart clarinet concerto: Very good, unsurprisingly. Mozart DOES live up to the hype.
The Rest is History: I saw this podcast had an episode on Robin Hood and I had to listen. Things I learned include: a) Robin Hood's almost certainly not real in any meaningful sense, alas, b) Friar Tuck is a time-traveler (the Franciscans were not founded until ten years after Richard II's death, and no other mendicant orders really fit the bill either), c) a dude in the 80s apparently seriously proposed that Robin Hood was a real person AND was turned into a vampire on his death and is thus still around, which sounds like a GREAT premise for some kitchen-sink-style fantasy/folklore story, and d) Robin may well have originated in French pastoral literature, as an allegorical figure of Marian devotion. Which last I am absolutely incorporating into my belief system.
Saint-Saëns' Carnival of Animals, Jeux d'Enfants, and Mother Goose: All quite good! Carnival of Animals was my favorite, interesting and varied and fun to listen to.
New Polity: listened to their first episode. They seem interesting and fairly reasonable so far, may listen again!
Sibelius Symphony 3: Like the other Sibelius I listened to, not an instant fave but quite good. Might have liked it better than the first two.
Hadestown live off-Broadway recording: Listened to this on my birthday as a special exception. Coming from the background of the Broadway version, what mostly struck me was how much shorter it was - unfortunately, I can't tell what it would be like to listen to this fresh, because I'm automatically adding the context of songs from the Broadway version. But obviously very good, and I enjoyed some of the differences. Will listen again.
(On my way home that day I read Piranesi, which shouldn't really go on this list but IS a Commute Arts Adventure. It was good. Did a really surprisingly good job of retaining the sense of wonder even after all the explanations, which is rare and very satisfying.)
Prokofiev's The Love For Three Oranges, Acts 1 and 2: the music was good, but I fee like I don't know how to listen to opera. It almost definitely needs more than plain audio + a skimmed plot summary for a first listen, so that might be something to reassess and try in a different setting.
Sundown, album by Gordon Lightfoot: Good. Dozed through some songs do I need to listen again, but good.
I'm near the end of my classical music recs! This is exciting. Feels like an accomplishment. (Though I DO still have all the individual songs people recommended me - those are all together in a playlist waiting their turn. So I'll have those for this week. :) )

I honestly recommend listening to democracy now, they've been doing some excellent reporting + interviewing student activists and experts. their primary reporter Amy Goodman was on the ground at Columbia the night of the raid and caught some truly disturbing audio as the buses full of arrested students were pulling out through the crowd.

Awkward moment when the radio is playing a sex scene on my commute home. And everyone just acting like they here nothing and all that plays in my head is, Huh, Reminds me of when I tried listening to Yagama Yato for a couple of times but got bored anyway. Also, they sound funny and really, I just snicker more than I am embarassed

Week Five (week before last) of Commute Radio!
Pretty podcast-heavy this time, because I started taking the train more and found that instrumental music doesn't work as well for me on the train. (It's easier to get completely distracted from the music if I'm a passenger, for some reason, and also the volume variation in classical music does not get along well with my headphones or train noises.)
Sibelius symphonies 1 and 2. As said above, a little hard to listen to on the train, but I think I liked them.
The Good List (listed on Spotify as A Drink With A Friend because they changed their name at some point). An episode about morning routines that I surprisingly didn't hate. (Morning routines are a hard sell for me. :P) Also another episode on Father Brown which... I don't think told me anything new, but was nice. Think I like this podcast.
Sacred and Profane Love. This episode was on Walt Whitman and... I think love of country? See, this is why I should make these posts in a more timely fashion. But what I remember of it was good!
My Writing Sucks. This continues to be entertaining and a fun time, as I listen to loving yet mocking commentary on the host's fourteen-year-old writing. Probably won't have anything new to say about it going forward - I'll just enjoy it. :P
Pints With Aquinas. This one was on the Sacraments! Good stuff. I'd relisten for sure if I wanted more on this topic.
Stravinsky's Firebird. Very dramatic... probably a bit too dramatic for my tastes, though not bad.
An album of assorted classical music by Wieniawski. Good! Didn't become an insta-fave, but I'd listen again.
Very Best of Stan Rogers album. Very good, and definitely furthered my education.
Stuff You Should Know: 6-minute episode on lame ducks. Still deciding whether to keep this one in rotation, just because I have an embarrassment of riches at this point.
Presidential: Jefferson episode. Good! This man had some deep-running issues, is the confirmation I got from this. Looking forward to moving beyond the First Three in the next ep, though!
Artifexian: This is always fun and entertaining to listen to - the hosts have a good presence and rapport - but I'm finding that there is definitely not a consistent focus on worldbuilding. Might start skipping around a bit in the episode list, to find the ones that look more worldbuilding-centered.
Art of Manliness: An episode on "Primal Living" that had the unintended effect of turning me from "moderately pro-paleo" to "you will pry my bread and staple carb crops from my COLD DEAD HANDS" for the length of time it took to listen to it. There is a balance in all things, guys. If you start talking like agriculture was a mistake I am very quickly tuning you out.
Being Human: This podcast is still in its introductory phases in the second episode, but I'm still invested in the subject matter so I'll be sticking around! Catholic psychiatry is an important thing.
Tchaikovsky Symphony 4: I didn't like this quite as much as Swan Lake but it was good.

The Value Of Radio
Radio
The radio was my first introduction to music. As a kid and aspiring author, I’d sit in our cold unfinished basement and type out stories on my father’s old desktop computer while the radio played. As a teen, my music interests shifted a bit (aka, Glee music), and I turned to YouTube and an iPod more than the radio to get a personalized, on-demand listening experience. In university, while that…

Told a friend I was free to hang out tomorrow fully expecting them to want to meet at our usual early afternoon time. They want me to show up at their place at 7:45 AM. Now I gotta find a way to get out of this 😔

Tim: When I was a kid I won a contest to DJ at my hometown’s easy listening radio station.
Tim: I then proceeded to play an hour's worth of Evanescence deep cuts and ruin everybody’s morning commutes.

i love that i made college au a playlist but instead of like caring about Character And Vibes And Everything like a usual playlist it's literally just the music i listened to in college. oh and love from the other side bc i keep hearing it on the radio and i think it's a jam
#mostly the more fun dancey alt stuff alt nation was playing at the time#circa. 2012-2016#oh and some like late 2000s songs they had in the rotation as well#bc it was what i heard on the way to and from campus every day since i commuted so i got to hear. a great deal of radio song content
