Describing some wigs
Many years ago there was as site called Amphigory.com, and while it's still up, the Amphigory that 16-year-old me spent days browsing is not the Amphigory that still remains. They're still cool, but they'd really scaled back the scope of what they sell. There used to be cosmetics, jewelry, hair dye, a few more things, and wigs.
One of the things that they did about their wig sales that really set them apart was the level of description that they gave every wig. This wasn't just a single stock picture and a name. They took their own pictures of each wig, inside and out, and described each one's strengths and flaws. They weren't like Arda, who designs their own wigs from scratch. They were more like a normal costume reseller, who had a collection of vendors that they'd order stock from. But, unlike most costume wig sellers, they had multiple pictures and a detailed analysis of each wig. You knew what you were getting, which was really important for cosplayers who might need to restyle a wig. If you've never restyled a wig before, you might not be aware, but the wig can make it very easy, or the wig can make it impossible.
Amphigory's wig section is long gone, but I do still buy wigs from a similar company, one that has a collection of wig vendors whose products they sell. This is a shop that I go to is in person, and I love that. I know that I can find some wigs cheaper elsewhere, but I absolutely love that I can go to a small business, roll up to a counter, and physically touch the wigs before I buy them. I can look at them, turn them inside-out, and touch them. I also get to take the wig home that day, instead of waiting for shipping.
But not everyone has this opportunity, and on the offchance that people are considering buying a wig online and google the wig to see worn photos or reviews, here's me making a compilation of wigs I've recently bought and what they actually look like in person. Even with wigs from the same seller, some might be garbage, but some might be hidden gems. So, in the interest of making more information about which wigs are like what, here we go:
California Costumes Pink/Gray Ombre with Star Clips:
Tumblr media
First of all, California Costumes gets 0/10 for creativity with names. I love me a good little nickname for a wig. The Costume Mansion, where I bought this, called it "Harmony," and I think that's a better name.
Yes, my wig head is cosplaying its Naruto OC. Let it do its thing.
This is a textured, ombre wig. The actual fiber is ombre, so an individual strand will go from gray color to pink, and the gray is a little bit softer than the pink. Some wigs that are tipped with another color accomplish this by having the color on the ends be longer hair than the top color, but this is a true ombre. I have not tested this for colorfastness, but it's possible that the pink tips won't age super well. The skin top is about 3" wide and does not go all the way to the front of the wig. This means that you can change the part a little bit, but it will always have bangs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The whole thing is sewn onto a continuous cap, which isn't as forgiving of larger head sizes than one that's just wefts and elastic. It has the built-in net that you sometimes see with cheaper wigs, which is where your hair would go if you want to wear this wig without a wig cap. You, however, don't want to wear this wig without a wig cap. You know better. There's hooks in the back for resizing.
Wefts in the back are about an inch apart, but when I was shaking it around and trying to make it show the mesh, I couldn't actually make it show the mesh without physically parting it. Depending on how you put your hair up under the wig, you might have problems with the mesh showing in the back (lumpy hair will show mesh, hair that's smoothly under a wig cap won't). This is probably a wig you want a matching or light colored wig cap for if you have a larger head.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Overall, cute wig, stock pictures don't do it justice. Available for $20 on Amazon, in case you don't have a local costume shop to support. This item tag reads "ITEM # 7022-068 FTY # 346 HK2203" and I don't know what that means but if someone's googling the tag to look up the wig then hopefully that'll lead them here.
Yuki by Characters:
Tumblr media
At least this one has a wig name. And boy howdy is that some big hair. The place I bought this from called it "Cupcake."
I tried on this wig because I really wanted to see how it was constructed, and I bought it because, when I tried it on, it was way cuter than I thought it'd be. It's a rougher fiber, which makes the curls hold their shape really well, but you're going to be fighting to keep the bangs and long forelocks looking smooth. There's no skin top, and the hair radiates from a sort of u-shaped blob at the top. There's so much going on in this wig that it's not particularly obvious, and also you will convince absolutely no one that it's not a wig, so that's not as much a priority to me on this style.
Tumblr media
As for how it's actually constructed, there's no teasing in the wig to keep it that big. Instead, the actual cap of the wig is sewn into the shape of the big faux twintails, and then the hair is attached to that structure. Wigs are not hair. Anyway, that means there's pretty much no major restyling that can be done. It's just curly hair about 5" long on a funky structure to make funky big hair. Anyway, because thew cap of this wig is so oversized, it's really comfortable to wear, and it's really accommodating of large head sizes or a lot of hair.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also because of the cap size, if you don't pin the temples on, it can slide back and make your bangs shorter. You can see that in my picture there. Mine did not come with the little rose clips, but it is supposed to come with the rose clips. It's much curlier than the stock images imply it will be.
This wig would be great for embellishing, since you can sew things directly to the funky shaped cap and not worry about where to support it. It also can handle a full sized BTSSB headbow, if that's a concern.
Someone's selling it on Amazon for $60 and you absolutely should not spend that much for this wig. I see other wig shops selling it for about $30, which is the upper limit on its real fair price, unless you really need the specific shape for it. I'm not going to link any specific shop since I don't have experience buying from them. "Yuki wig" and "Characters Yuki wig" are good search terms.
Characters Peggy Sue wig:
Tumblr media
Okay so please be forgiving that my detail pictures are going to be of this wig already styled, because I didn't know I was going to do this post when I started working with it. I'll make a point to spell out what's stock and what's been done. Top pictures here are the most un-styled that I have.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This wig's got a coin-shaped skin top that all the hair radiates from. It comes with long, blunt bangs. The fiber is really shiny and is very easily reshaped by low hair dryer heat. High heat on my hair dryer, too close to the scalp, was how I made the frizzy spot in the back. The cap is a closed mesh cap, but it's nice and stretchy.
The weird boogers on the top of my wig are the orange hilights that I put in (they were just chopped from another wig), but that picture's there to show the size of the skin top. You can also see where I sewed some orange wefts into the wig for all-over recoloring. I re-parted the skin coin so that the hair has a linear part instead of radiating from the center, and then painted it with liquid foundation to make the parted area larger. Mine also has a LOT of baby powder dispersed through it to combat the shine. I spent like four days to try to make this $20 wig look like it's maybe a $35 wig. (The process was: "oh hey I'll be taking my wheelchair to the comic convention. I should cosplay Barbara Gordon because that will be fun. This will be easy and I don't need to put a lot of money or time into it." and then four days passed and I'd spent hours manually highlighting a cheap wig).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And it really needs a bit of love to get it to be less frizzy. Right out of the bag, my wig did not have that outward flip. Unlike the other two, I don't see this being a really usable wig for lolita fashion in pretty much any context, but hey, I'm on a roll with this post.
This wig is listing online for like $30, and that's a bit much IMO. If you have a local shop selling it for $20, well, that's a different matter.
If you want a wig just to change your hair color so that your bright pink hair doesn't clash with your coord, I once bought this wig (according to Amazon in 2015 so it's been...almost a decade...nice to know they're tracking that) and was pretty impressed with the quality for a $17 wig. So, you know, buy that instead of this Peggy Sue wig.
I do own the Lacey Costume Little Women II Wig (Amphigory's "Innocent?" wig) but it's late and I want to go to bed, and all you really need to know about it is that the fiber texture of the ash blond color is really dicey, so that's probably a case where if you need a pigtail wig you need to just get an Arda Chibi. I can still do details if anyone wants. It's just 9:30 and I have to put all these damn wigs away, so good night, everyone.

I headcanon that Kaito has brown hair like Chikage's and Aoko's but he dyes his hair black/wears a kind of wig to look more like his father with a different hair style, I know it could be the lighting but it's driving me insane how Kid sometimes has black hair. I deeply sympathise with people who mistook his many shades of blue for purple, on the topic of eyes Chikage likes to dye her hair fun colours and wear coloured contacts so she always looks different (headcanon again - it just fits with her criminal history and free spirit lifestyle), I can't decide if I prefer her with brown, green or purple eyes.
On a similar not ho do you feel about Akako having hair such a night-black it's almost purple as opposed to her ombre of crimson and scarlet she had originally in the anime to match her red eyes? I think manga Hakuba was blonde with pale blue eyes, then anime Hakuba had light brown/dirty blonde hair and red eyes and then golden blonde (almost yellow) hair and brown eyes - what appearance of his is your favourite?
Also I headcanon that Midoriko has British heritage and that's partly why she's extra excited to befriend Hakuba (Gosho doesn't understand recessive genes, red and purple eyes could by due to albinism but blue eyes? No), it would fit the theme more if she had green eyes and Aoko's blue eyes were a mutation/skipped a generation and so happened to fit her birthstone but blue eyes would make more sense genetically (maybe she can have turquoise eyes, a blue-green colour).
THIS WAS ONE OF THE QUESTIONS I WAS VERY EXCITED TO ANSWER.
One thing I really liked about 1412 was Kaito's hair color change, how he decided to dye it black every time he disguises himself as KID. I think this is a great move because Toichi had black hair and can trick Snake better this way!
GOD, do you know what Kaito's hair looked like in episode 76? If you don't remember, please check out this screenshot.
Tumblr media
Okay, I know that his hair is actually spiked, but I really like to think that it actually looks like that and he only combs it in spikes because that's how Aoko combs her hair.
BUT I LIKE TO FANTASIZE ABOUT HIS HAIR BEING LIKE THIS, WAVY. Can you imagine if he dyed it red? Well, this is very off topic, but I like to fantasize that when Kaito stops being a CHILD he dyes his hair to close cycles.
Note: I actually have an argument in my head to justify why Kaito should grow his curly hair, dye it red and dress like a biker while traveling the world.
I stop being a normal person when we talk about Kaito's hair, here, I have this appreciation post and a video of simply, Kaito's hair.
In fact, in some movies his hair as KID looks black and in 1412 he actually changes it to black. I've also seen episodes of Detco where he has it black, friend, don't worry, you're not crazy I believe you. In fact, I really love Kaito's curly black hair from movie 3.
Back to the topic of his eyes, I actually watched Magic Kaito 1412 first before Detco, so I was always confused as to why people said Kaito's eyes were purple… Then I understood! In Detco sometimes his eye color looked different.
I'm all for saying his eyes are blue or purple, or even the idea that they're actually purple and he just wears contact lenses.
Tumblr media
Personally, I really like (TOO MUCH) the headcanon that Chikage is French, according to Google, in France the majority of women have brown hair and some are natural blondes. I like to think her original hair color was actually blonde or red… I’m going to adopt your headcanon! Because Chikage could definitely dye her hair and wear contact lenses!
Personally, I'm leaning towards the fact that she's originally a redhead with green eyes, but it would also be cool if she had purple eyes to pass down to Kaito.
For a long time I thought Chikage's eyes were yellow, lmao, you could say she wears contact lenses. Let's take all the colors! She could change her outfit every week! I mean, she's also a master of disguise, I don't doubt she has wigs a long list of contact lenses available.
Tumblr media
I think red eyes and dark hair make Akako look super pretty! But I'll always prefer her as a redhead, however, I have a headcanon here that might interest you.
My headcanon is that Akako has dark hair (like in 1412) and blue eyes without magic, and it's thanks to her powers that her eyes and hair turn red (it could be canon, but without confirmation from gosho I won't say anything).
There's an image that came out a few months ago where Akako actually has brown hair and blue eyes, there's also Hakuba with blonde hair and blue eyes. (I couldn't find the image).
I wonder what gosho has with brown hair and blue eyes, there's more variety than just that. Anyway, I can say that I like Saguru's almost yellow blonde hair color in 1412 with his brown eye color. But I don't reject the other variables, the red eye color makes me think of vampires. It would be interesting if Hakuba was one, in fact, it's funny but a while ago I came across an anime about vampire detectives.
Tumblr media
I really love the idea of Midoriko having British heritage! Also the headcanon that Aoko's eyes aren't blue but aquamarine, but turquoise would look beautiful too. I'm going to adopt your headcanon.

Are the phantom production costumes getting closer to each other now? Look at the styles of the mask... West-end ish... less forehead... and the star princesses are now following the west end color scheme and style.
With Broadway closing and with the original Australian costume shop closing two major and long-time styles are no longer produced. Which means the West End / UK style kinda dictates the costume styles around the world. EXCEPT in Japan, I might add. They still make their own costumes.
Basically all new costumes added to the World Tour has been UK style, with a few exceptions. For some curious reasons they ended up with US style Hannibal 'slavegirl' bodices and tiaras. Which also means they keep doing the US bodice / UK skirt combo for Christine's Elissa, with no super good transaction between bodice and skirt. Though I appreciate that they tried smooth out the transition in the Chinese production, by adding gold decorations and a brooched "belt". A big improvement from Kaley Ann Voorhees' undecorated look in Taiwan to what's worn by Yang Chengxiyi in the Chinese production and Grace Roberts in the World Tour:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A few other US costumes has also been added into the lot, and quite a few vintage costumes are also still in use. But new stuff made for the principals - including Jonathan Roxmouth's new mask and Red Death costume, and most of Grace Robert's wardrobe - is very much UK style.
I guess the only thing to add some fun is that the costume BASE is made in the UK, but the exact decorations are left for the local costume crew, to add after the final fitting. It means that even if they would use the same materials, they may interpret it differently. This was very prominent in the UK made costumes in the most recent South Korean production. All the extra gold on the bodices!
Tumblr media
All the extra lace, all the red, the ROSE!
Tumblr media
But that the STAR PRINCESS costumes would take after West End... that's probably my biggest regret. Those costumes have issues. Or I have issues with them. The bodices tend to wrinkle or not appear well fitted, I find the colours over-saturated and the decorations underwhelming, and I don't care much for the updo and the flattening of the tiaras either. In this I appreciate Grace Roberts' costume way more. OK, it has a lesser decorated bodice. But beautifully fitted and perfect good ombre effect, no wig updo and a more distinct tiara tilt. It reminds more of what Maria Bjørnson designed, frankly.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So yeah, the UK costumes dominate the world right now, due to its presence in West End, the World Tour and the Restaged Tour. For better and for worse, some costumes are absolutely fantastic, while others are not my favourites. But fun to compare anyhow.

Wig makers should start disclosing what they are using for dyeing their wigs and give warnings in sales description about colors fading with time. I spent hundreds of dollars on bright, colorful ombre wigs that all faded into a bleak mess. Human dyes might be more convenient to use, but if someone wants to charge a hefty price for their wigs then they should use dyes dedicated for mohair (acid dyes)

INTEL 🞂 FILE 001 🞂 BASIC APPEARANCE.
Tumblr media
repost from my old blog with some tweaks!
her hair is naturally fairly curly with a 3b-3c curl type. lack of proper care and years of straightening, bleaching, and dye have lead to damaged hair. when it’s not straightened, her hair appears more like the 2c type due to lack of curl definition and hydration. she mostly wore her hair in a side braid until her pre-teen years when she had the money to start trying out new styles.
on the topic of hair, sombra changes her appearance regularly. for simplicity’s sake i will always refer to her hair as the canonical straightened purple ombre (in her main verse. varies between verses), but it’s common that she will change it every few months. it’s a habit that began as an experimental phase in her teenage years that evolved into something to keep her from being easily recognizable. she frequently changes the way she wears her hair as well- anything from switching sides to wearing it down completely to hide her cybernetics, curling it, tying it back, etc.
she owns lots of wigs that she cycles between for missions or if she’s craving a new look without the temporary commitment.
she regularly changes how she does her makeup but you’ll rarely see her without it. even on days where she looks more natural, there’s always mascara, lipstick and a few new beauty marks.
compared to much of the cast, sombra does not have a very athletic build. she’s fit enough due to talon’s training regime for her, but most of her muscle is in her legs. she has much less arm strength. in a fair 1v1 fight where she can’t run, she’s likely to lose. because of this she relies on the element of surprise and outside factors to secure a victory.
she’s had her fair share of piercings, including but not limited to: eyebrows, lips, tongue, bellybutton, nipples, and loads of ear piercings. she prefers piercings over tattoos since you can just take them out, let them heal, and forget you ever had them. since joining talon she’s toned down the piercings to just her gauges so she doesn’t set off any alarms on missions.
her eyes are cybernetically enhanced so they are always an unnatural color. her natural dark brown is visible if she turns off the cosmetic function of her cybernetics. in main verse threads, her eyes will be referred to as the unnatural purple she has in canon but she changes it up along with everything else regularly. they tend to match her hair and cybernetic colors.
speaking of cybernetics, she’s able to change the color of them along with the intensity of the lights. she can turn them off completely and often chooses to during missions and undercover work.
very small hc but i think she has a dimple on her right cheek :) for fun. also she has a lot of extra moles on her face and body besides the one on her cheek and chin.
