A Filipino childhood dessert favorite 🥥🥣 Ginataang bilo bilo is like a Filipino coconut soup with glutinous rice balls, sago, jackfruit (langka), and sometimes bananas 💛💜 A little creature poking out from the edge of the bowl

Manjar De Coco
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The instructions aren’t in English, but I loosely translated them, and they generally go like this:
Dissolve 50g (1.75 oz) of powder in 500ml (2 1/2 cups) of cold milk, stirring until fully combined.
Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it comes to a boil.
Reduce the heat to low and keep stiring for 2 more minutes.
The mixture is ready when it has thickened. Pour the mixture into a 20cm (8-inch) mold that has been moistened with cold water to prevent sticking.
Allow the mixture to cool at room temperature, then refrigerate for approximately 3 hours, or until it sets to the desired consistency.
Tips: If you prefer, make a caramel sauce to put on top of the dish.
I used more than one package of the powder, so if you do the same, be sure to adjust the amount of milk accordingly. I opted for coconut milk instead of cow's milk and skipped the caramel sauce. Instead, I used a raspberry sauce, as I find it complements the coconut flavor better.
You might also consider trying chocolate sauce, fruit compote or preserves (such as mango), coconut cream, whipped cream, honey, or maple syrup. Experiment and find the topping you prefer. I chose not to cover the entire dessert with one sauce because everyone had their own preference for what to use with their slice.
Other than that, everything turned out wonderfully and was delicious. It was great to try this out, especially since it only required about two cans of coconut milk. The process was straightforward, and didn't take that long to finish. You can either wait a few hours for it to set or prepare it the day before for convenience.

15/3/2024 - Dessert
📍 整耶耶 (Whole coconut), Changsha
🥥 Signature item (28 Yuan)
It's really whole coconut with coconut jelly inside. Topped with chewy mochi balls and mango. It's a nice treat. Wonder if the drinks taste like Mr Coconut.
We chanced upon a street with many food stalls that sell mini dumplings. They are so cute!

Coconut Jelly King, 368 N Lemon Ave, Unit B, Walnut, CA 91789
Tumblr media
I’ve had coconut jelly from a few different places and Coconut Jelly King is still my favorite because it isn’t as sweet and it has the best texture. Their coconut jelly is soft, silky and almost melts in your mouth, leaving a trace of natural sweetness. The texture is similar to soft, silken tofu.
Coconut Jelly King uses the best organic coconuts to make their jelly. The coconut jelly comes in glass jars, with flavors like blueberry, strawberry, matcha, red bean, taro, durian, pineapple, kiwi, etc. No sugar is added to the coconut jelly. They also have egg waffles, pancakes, mille crepe cake slices, and drinks.
Single coconut jelly ($6.99): The perfect breakfast or dessert because it fills you up without weighing you down. The natural sweetness of coconut and soft, silky texture are so good (and I didn’t think I liked coconut).
Blueberry coconut jelly ($8.99): Whole blueberries in a puree on the bottom of the coconut jelly. The blueberry skins add some texture. The coconut jelly part is the same as the single coconut jelly.
Coconut jelly is supposed to improve beauty and skin health and it’s full of antioxidants. The coconut jelly is good for 3-5 days if kept in the fridge or one day if topped with fresh fruit.
The Walnut space is larger with seating and cute décor (a mural on the wall shows cartoon astronauts holding coconut jelly jars). This location has a rewards program. However, they do not take their glass jars back.

The pop-up Ji Xiang Ang Ku Kueh (吉祥红龟粿) stall in Sun Plaza never fails to attract us with their colourful range of kuehs. Mum picked up some Peanut Ang Ku Kuehs (front row) and Sweet Bean Ang Ku Kuehs (back row). These traditional glutinous rice snacks are sticky and soft, packed with fillings. Best eaten on the day of purchase or keep it in the fridge then steam it.

Me, I am intrigued by these blue and white lumps of glutinous rice snacks. The inside is filled with gula melaka sweetened desiccated coconut. I couldn’t find any information on it but the nearest I came across is Pulut Inti (Steamed Glutinous Rice with Coconut Topping). Taste wise, it is comparable but lose out on the banana leaf fragrance as it uses paper wrappers.

This Labubu doll craze is taking the whole world by storm. Even Ji Xiang Ang Ku Kueh is coming out with a set of seven Labubu Ang Ku Kuehs (S$60) with a choice of peanut, sweet bean or mixture of the two fillings. If you just want to buy one piece, it will cost you S$10.
