hey. hey cm. why are we learning this about the new character six minutes into the episode. also why is she saying this to hotch and rossi who clearly already know. like this is a pretty interesting character backstory and i feel like revealing it this quickly does such a disservice to it. at least wait until the end of her first episode?

something i think could have worked:

keep this conversation. and if you keep it, i do think you need to do the backstory reveal in the same episode because otherwise it's just...weird. it's too heavyhanded to carry an arc. or, cut it entirely and sprinkle hints before a reveal.

but anyway, if you keep it: don't end the conversation like this. end it at "i appreciate the concern." episode happens, la la la, at the end, either hotch or rossi (probably rossi? from what i understand, he winds up having the best dynamic with seaver) checks in with her, asking whether or not the case wound up triggering painful memories. she says no.

someone else overhears, and as they leave the jet, they stop her— "painful memories?"

and then have this line. also, whether you keep the scene and do the reveal at the end of the episode, or scrap the scene and do the reveal later (and in that case i think only rossi should know) you could do a little bait-and-switch where you imply that she's lost someone to a killer rather than losing someone because they were a killer.

like. i don't know how the rest of the episode goes. maybe this wouldn't work. maybe i don't know what i'm talking about and i'm being pretentious. but ough. i don't like this. imagine if every other character had their backstory revealed six minutes into their introduction.

Criminal Minds seems to have changed so much. Season 1 to 6 seemed to focus on the science and logistics. Season 7 onward seemed more focused on the personal lives of the characters, which I think could've been done better. I'm not sure what to think of season 13? The mini series? I don't know what the show is trying to be anymore.

ive said it before and i’ll say it again: foyet began the overarching plotlines that killed the og criminal minds. when the studio fucked the show by terminating aj and paget’s contracts, i feel like the writers really needed to advocate for those characters by emphasizing that the team is a family. which is nice, but the heavy-handedness of the found family is a bit overdone imo. starting with season six it really starts to turn more into a drama, and the episodic plots get sent to the backburner. i really preferred the earlier seasons where the family dynamic was definitely present, it just wasnt addressed so directly

With decent armor, good training and high quality weapons, Wights hold the line for other troops to deliver the killing blow.

Encyclopedia: Skeleton

Skeletons are the weakest troops at the Necro Archon’s disposal. Their mental capacity is limited to executing orders, with no trace of sapience. They perform mundane and repetitive jobs like work in the mines, farming or guard duties. Their combat use is rare, since their lackluster skills make placing cores inside them a waste of time, resources and Necro energy that could be spent on creating Wights. Despite this, they are cheap and easy to summon en masse as meat shields for more valuable troops, temporary protection for liches and necromancers or for flooding enemy positions. They fare decently against weak and average fighters, making up for their temporary nature. 

Pros: 

+ High ATK + Shielded + Summoned in high numbers + Doesn’t explode upon death by Pyro + Fairly fast

Cons: 

- Low DEF - Low HP - Low lifespan - No ability to attack floating enemies - No ranged attack

Skeletons don’t feature voice lines. 

Passive I: Forged In Bloodshed

Equips Wights with heavy armor, granting them +60% DEF. Their shields are steel-plated, making them unburnable.

Playing around Ditto

Turn 1: Cress vs. Ditto is an interesting lead matchup. Opponent will switch out; so will I. Ursaring is bulky.

Turn 2: Ursaring threatens EQ vs. Toxapex. I fear TSpikes; switch to Hatterene. 23% with Leftovers is bearable. I debate between Psychic vs. Draining Kiss. Psychic does more damage, no Dark-types vs. Cress. In retrospect I should've clicked Mystical Fire, which didn't occur to me as an option. Same BP as Draining Kiss and Defiant is annoying. (This was a mistake; what Defiant mon would want to switch in?)

Turn 3: I predict Iron Head and get read. Stonjourner is a threat. It might force me into Tera Ground Ursaring. I go Cress.

Math excursion: Stone Edge is 80% to hit. if you roll two five-sided dice, what are the odds that neither comes up 5? There are 25 outcomes: (1 1), (2 1) ... (5 1), (1 2) ... (5 2), ... (5 5). Out of these, we have (1 5) (2 5) (3 5) (4 5) (5 5) and (5 1) (5 2) (5 3) (5 4) (5 5), but 5 appears twice, so (25 - 9)/25 = 16/25 = 4²/5² = 64% to hit.

But it's 20% that I can stay in. Ursaring is a new 20% and a roll on top of the 64%. I'd rather sac than tera early.

Non-math excursion: this is all System 1. I don't know probability. If it's an 80.9% roll with a 64% chance to hit, what are the odds of a 2HKO? But there are better and worse outcomes. Stone Edge has a high crit chance (1/8 = 12.5%), but that doesn't matter here; the worst outcome is a 2HKO, and there are better outcomes where I hit. I don't think it really matters, though; if I'd seen a better line I'd taken it, and getting better at probability will pay off on the ladder way less than learning not to tilt. I suspect that generalizes.

Turn 8: I get one EQ and give up Ursaring for damage on Stonjourner. I can RK with Beartic. But opponent switches out to Toxapex, which is a good play.

I can't set up because of Ditto, and I have to answer Toxapex with Hatterene to play around Toxic or TSpikes, I don't know which. I haven't revealed Swalot yet; I'm hoping to bait TSpikes, but I also also haven't needed to reveal it. I need an information advantage.

Opponent's gameplan is to chip me down with Toxapex and Forretress. Forretress can't switch in on Hatterene safely, but Toxapex can't stay in.

Palafin revealed. Another threat, but TBolt looks good here. I'll try to set up, pressure Ditto, and Tera Electric at the right moment.

After some shuffling, turn 15: Toxapex comes in vs. Cress. Pex can live a hit, Toxic my wincon, and switch out, and with Regenerator that's not enough progress for that concession. I reveal Swalot predicting Toxic.

Turn 19: TSpikes is a mistake. I can always go Swalot. Stonjourner can't switch in and Cress has TBolt for Palafin. I'll have to make concessions for chip on Forretress. Cress can tank and recover.

Turn 28: Picking up Stonjourner is nice. I don't have to worry about a future LO-boosted Stone Edge and I don't have to preserve Beartic. My team is pretty slow and Volc does nothing with Palafin around.

Turn 32: Band? I still don't want to tera. I don't need to. Precise calculation is important.

Turn 35: I could Tera Electric here, but I want the optionality, so I take a quieter line and concede Toxic for the initiative. Obviously Pex will switch out. I'm not sure that this was accurate - if I'd gotten predicted and switched in Swalot on a Recover, the position would get hairy. I don't fear Band Palafin.

Everything I do has to be positioned against Ditto. Cress improofs itself as long as it doesn't tera. Swalot improofs Hatterene. Cress improofs Swalot. Beartic can't come in, but at some point I can CC and sac to pressure Ditto... and the last mon is a Torterra!

hello I've been an on-and-off CM enjoyer(?) for a decade, with Hotch being my main area of interest… I just spent literal hours going through your blog lol. tbh it was exactly the kind of CM content I desperately wanted but had trouble finding initially (jfc the sea of x reader I had to wade through) anyway I stopped watching full eps at around S5, but I'm aware of how things go for Hotch and I'm v bitter about the missed opportunities. maybe a popular opinion in the fandom, but I've always hated how the Foyet attack was glossed over for example - my disbelief when I first watched 5x02 and Hotch just... shows up to work?? why'd they bother with such a major injury if its consequences were limited to one (1) episode years later, and even then the mental trauma was 99% ignored. no mention of meds/painkillers/recovery? nothing about "your scars are gonna look just the same"?? BUT that almost pales in comparison to all the other Hotchner things you got me thinking about, like his subtle aversion to fire or autistic traits or other facets of his character/relationships that are soooo tantalizingly hinted at but not expanded upon. I don't know the whole show that well so idk how Hotch fared compared to other characters but it felt like we got crumbs, especially since he was there for 11 goddamn seasons sorry this is so long but I've never talked CM to anyone before and you've made me love Hotch even more as a character, and now I'll have to further stew in my despair over him getting zero closure

i have similar issues with the show and fandom. the show looooves to traumatize its characters and then pretend it didnt even happen the second the arc is over. i understand its the nature of an episodic show like this (and i love that style for this show! i do!) but they could MENTION how hotch has scars (especially in season 10 when theyre all comparing scars on the plane) or how he needs medication (considering thats the only reason why they found foyet in the first place). foyet was the first big arc, so i understand why they needed to get on with it and bring hotch back to work by 5x02, but i wish they’d had an extra episode in between dealing with the team’s emotions about their leader being attacked (the way we kinda see them reeling from haley’s death and the potential of hotch not returning in 5x11 (or whatever the next ep after 100 is)).

no matter who your favorite cm character is, anyone can have the same complaint of them not following through about what undergoing these kind of traumatic events would mean for the characters. it’s definitely a sore point with criminal minds. especially because the only time they do it is when they want a character to leave (like gideon, blake, and kate). it fucking sucks bc there’s so much potential

and that’s where i feel like the fandom lets me down too. there’s not a lot of talk about it—mostly it’s just self inserts and shipping. there’s hardly any good character analysis out there, but that’s why i started this blog in the first place: if it doesn’t exist, make it yourself! (i would encourage you to do the same if you still feel this way. i talk shit ab the fandom all day but i still get so much positivity despite that from people who value the characters just as much but express it differently)

im not sure garvez was ever endgame. ill be happy for people who like them if they are, but after the date flashback im kinda done. i want luke with someone who can be with him without insulting him

my biggest issue is penelope’s terrible character development. by s16ep5 its pretty cringe. its completely avoidable too! if tyler was a detective obsessed with the case, maybe it’d be different. as a victim’s family member, every interaction with him is so bad. the yelling “no no no!” scene about interviewing him was embarrassing. she argues with tyler constantly, which would be fine if he wasn't a victim’s family member! when she ends things with him, she takes 0 responsibility for putting the case in jeopardy or disobeying emily. emily could get fired if it got out but oh well!! not penny's problem <3

her character is completely different now. penelope overstepped with victims' families before, but for THEIR benefit. shes struggled on cases before but handled it differently with hotch. i just dont think the current writers get her character. shes always brought comic relief, but the show used to be balanced about it. her character does things to find happiness and keep the horrors from her job at bay, but no one is better than her. she chooses to see the best in people while being the most professional when she needs to be. when she teases derek and the team, its usually at appropriate times. she has her moments, but shes not really an immature character. for most of the early seasons, shes probably the most well adjusted. shes given every character emotional support. kevin is a no, but for years she did have one of the most stable relationships on the team.

by the time luke joins, it feels like the funny parts of her personality are her entire personality. and then shes rude to luke for years!! in the moment it felt fine bc it was her immature reaction to a crush. looking back its weird. why is she suddenly like this? shes been in relationships before. she corrected herself after being cold to alex when she first joined the team, but shes so immature she can only deal with liking luke by insulting him for 3 years?

they’ve been writing penelope’s character poorly for years, but this is the first season where i’ve struggled watching her scenes. its actually impressive how they were able to ruin a character in 10 eps sdfkjsk. hopefully s17 will be better but i don’t have a lot of faith. mostly i dont want to see luke trying to win her over. if theyre together it better be because shes written completely differently and makes the effort.
