The Anti-Diabetic, Health Boosting Power of Cluster Beans
Cluster beans/Gavar are low in carbohydrates—in fact, they have the least carbohydrate content of all greens, and the highest water-soluble dietary fibre among all vegetables. These factors make it an ideal anti-diabetes food, as they slow down the absorption of glucose into the bloodstream, helping the body maintain a normal blood sugar level.

Bees? Bees!
🐝
Lmao, literally everyone has asked for bees xD Alrighty, tagging @pluckyyoungdonna and @introvertbibliophile since y'all asked for bees as well.
This was a Febuwhump prompt I hadn't finished, but was very excited for. The premise being that there was an old tradition for beekeepers that if the beekeeper (or family of the beekeeper) passed away, one was supposed to knock on the hive and let them know, otherwise the bees wouldn't be able to process their grief and the hive would fail.
So this takes place post The Wake in a version where Dream and Hob grew very close (whether in a relationship or not, up to you).
Hob walks out into the back garden of his home in the countryside. The flowers were in bloom, the small patch of bush beans and tomatoes and peppers and a scattering of other vegetables they had planted together were flourishing. Their leaves were strong and hardy. Their fruit, plump and shiny. Hob still remembers Dream kneeling beside him, his fingers trailing through the dirt on the cloudy spring day. He’d just started this new life a year back and had wanted to return to his roots some. Plus, food prices kept going up and it was satisfying to eat what you’ve grown with hard work. He had planned to make a dinner for the two of them with the harvest of their garden. The sun is shining bright and the air is sticky warm with humidity. It’s far too nice of a day for this. There should be rain, he thinks. Dream would have found it thematic. He dips into the storage shed at the edge of the gate and pulls the veiled hat over his head. He wouldn’t need the whole outfit, not for what he’s doing. He’s got jeans and a long sleeved shirt on as is. It’ll do. Besides, it’s not like he can die, right? The beehive sits inside a ring of wildflowers. Dream had planted those. Said they came from the dreams of the bees themselves. Hob had laughed, said they were going to have the most spoiled bees this side of the Thames. The flowers have wilted now—the only sign of decay amongst the thriving summer life. Hob tries not to cry. Clusters of honeybees dance around the wooden box, waggling with their pollen coated legs, talking in dance to their sisters. Dream had spent hours out here when they’d first gotten the hive set-up. He says their patterns and movements reminded him of the movements of early star’s dreams and the nightmares of some alien race Hob’s never heard of. (In fact, that was the first time he’d learned that aliens are also real.) He kneels beside the hand painted wood, trailing his fingers across the sun-worn black paint of two ravens—one much more realistic than the other. Dream had drawn the first one. A small raven with a white breast. Jessamy, Hob had learned. He’d heard her name, heard her story. Now he knew what she looked like. Matthew, who’d been enjoying the bird seed left out for the natives, cawed that he deserved a spot on the box as well, so Hob had done his best to make a decent rendition of him beside Jessamy. The smaller, fine brushstrokes of Dream’s hand over his own painting—refining it, bringing life and shape to the black blob—still remain.

FFXIV Write 2024, Prompt 5 "Stamp"
Dhalmel Chili
A Recipe Sponsored by the Dhalmel Meat Advisory Committee
Dhalmel meat is a versatile ingredient in home cooking, despite its reputation as tough or gamy. From marinated kabobs or a creamy dhalmel gratin, to the savory dhalmel chili in today’s recipe, you can use dhalmel meat in every meal! Preparation is key, but ground dhalmel meat couldn’t be easier to use. Fresh ground is best, so if you can’t grind meat at home, ask your butcher. Your family will love this spicy, thick-style stew loaded with flavorful meat, finely chopped vegetables, and hearty beans!
When the Dhalmel Meat Advisory Committee asked me to create a new recipe using dhalmel meat, I immediately thought back to my time at Camp Cloudtop. The local hunters ate a dhalmel meat-filled pie stamped into the shape of a half-moon. The cast-iron press used to create this portable and delightful treat would be heated over the campfire until hot, then oiled, and stuffed with a sandwich of yesterday’s spicy stewed dhalmel and two slices of bread. While you can’t truly recreate the hunter’s pie at home, the leftover chili makes for a great griddled sandwich or pasta topping.
Leave a review below if you try our recipe!
Serves 8.
~24oz fresh ground dhalmel meat
1 large onion (cyclops or steppe), chopped
Ground rock salt, pepper, dried highland oregano, powdered cumin seeds, 1 teaspoon each
2 to 3 garlic cloves, chopped, to taste
3 to 6 teaspoons dragon chili powder, to taste
3 large cups of cooked mun-tuy beans
4 tomatoes, chopped
1 large cup of tomato sauce
2 green peppers, chopped
1 leek, chopped
3 cups stock
3 teaspoons maple sugar
8 fire crystals, optional
Brown the dhalmel meat, drain the fat, and remove. Saute onions, garlic, green peppers. Transfer to a large pot, add the remaining ingredients and spices. Simmer until liquid has reduced greatly. Serve with sour cream and cheese, if desired.
If using crystal synthesis, we recommend at least 8 fire crystals or 1 whole cluster (if affordable).

Today in vegetable gardening:
First tomatillo fruits have set. I've got 'Green Giant' and 'Tiny Coban' varieties all planted together. If I get enough of them, they're destined for salsa, either frozen or canned. I didn't get any last year because of spider mite infestation. Had to treat these for flea beetles even before they made it into the ground, but they've recovered well.
The squirrels have stolen all the sizeable tomatoes in the back, but the ones in the front bed are doing great. Probably because they're somewhat hidden by the cosmos hedge directly behind them. These are processing tomatoes (var. 'Heinz 1350VF') and will likely be made into ketchup or salsa and canned since I'm running low and have plenty of pasta sauce.
This eggplant is apparently an overachiever, setting three 'Black Beauty' fruits at once. With my conditions they never get more than softball size, but that makes them serving sized which is fine with me. Even odds whether these get turned into dip or breaded and fried for sandwiches.
And hey, looks like I've got an Asian eggplant (var. 'Ping Tung') after all - I thought all of those seedlings had died before transplant, but this one must have been mislabeled. I'll have some for stir-frying after all.
Bonus borage flower cluster because I like the color gradations.
Got another round of bush beans seeds into earthboxes as the current plants are starting to peter out. Only had five 'Contender' seeds left, so I put in those and twenty 'French Filet'. I'll probably start packaging them up for the freezer once the new plants start producing as I've been eating all the ones from this round.
I did have to pull four tomato plants that didn't make it through the heat wave, including my only sungold plant. I replaced them with my potted Japanese sweet potato slips. Put in an additional six slips here and there. Got 10 more slips potted up - hopefully it will rain again in a week or so and I can transplant them in too.
The rain we got yesterday was very gentle and didn't penetrate very far into the dry soil, but it was enough to skip watering for a day or two and it perked everything up significantly. We'd gone a whole month without, so anything that actually hit the ground was much appreciated.

Hihi hope you are doing well!
I got a Hannibal drabble/HC for you, pretty much x reader because I’m stuck in a loop rn —
Hannibal unknowingly picks up a guardian hacker. He saved them while ‘grocery shopping’ & now they’re protecting him - whilst also trying really hard not to fall for him & Bedelia. Hacker is also not really hiding from either of them.
first request feeling good
Hannibal and Bedelia with an unexpected saviour
Hannibal rarely goes out, needing to keep his face out of any public spaces to avoid potential media picking him up, but as lovely as Bedelia is, she doesn’t know italy like he does, and his tastes are so refined, he has to go out and shop for them.
he enters one of the many places he found during his youth, his hair is swept slightly differently, he can’t look identical to his wanted picture after all. he’d be a fool to get caught due to illogical actions, and hannibal is no fool.
wandering the isles, hannibal gently grasps clusters of vegetables, cheeses including parmesan, oils, beans and herbs. he’s planning on making a Ribollita tonight. he strolls to get the final piece for the dish, dry bread. in that isle he sees someone looking cautious, he instantly infers they’re being followed.
it’s not his business, it really isn’t. but when they leave the store as he’s finishing paying, he can see the silhouette of a man cornering them. carrying his groceries, he stalks outside, he clears his throat calmly, turning the sharp corner to a shrouded alley.
the brick walls are newly stained with blood, they’re fighting the man who has them pinned, and their face is bleeding slowly. their fingernails are covered in congealed blood from trying to gauge out the man’s eyes. Hannibal respects the fight, and almost clicks his tongue when he sees the man pull out a knife, and perhaps if the attacker looked in the reflection, he would’ve had a warning for the gun pulled on him.
with the silencer on, hannibal pulls the trigger effortlessly, and wipes down his suit as a speck of blood splatters on his ironed pants. “nice to meet you.” he quirks his lip.
you are in shock, covered in blood that surprisingly isn’t yours. you nod at the well clothed man, and briskly stand in the rain that’s starting to pour, washing all of the evidence away.
you leave hannibal with a smile, knowing exactly who he was when you saw him. any photos of him online have been tampered with, changing the location he was seen. his wanted photo keeps changing to other people entirely to throw off the public. you change news articles, giving variations or lies, that hannibal has been apprehended, has been found deceased, is in custody.
it seems with ill intent when you take a candid photo of hannibal when he’s not aware. but it’s to throw off the officials completely, in the photo he’s next to a street sign. you change it to a street which is in bulgaria.
one night when you are shopping once again, and you cut through the same alley, that still had brown stains on the floor, you see a familiar figure waiting for you.
“hello there.” he rasps out kindly, adjusting the cuffs of his sleeves, his hair is more collected this time, he looks stunning, and you can’t deny the flames that dart to your cheeks. “i believe a thank you is in order, you were almost untraceable.” he smiled, offering his hand. “would you like to have dinner with me?”
of course you said yes, although cautiously, you were not stupid to what dinner could mean for this man. you listened as he continued on talking in a hushed manner, looping his arm through yours. “one of my wanted pictures, you changed it to the face of the man who attacked you. it gave you away.”
you tutted, “ah, i should’ve gathered.” but in truth, it wasn’t your goal to stay hidden from hannibal. after 20 minutes of walking in mostly comfortable silence and occasional hums from the man beside you. his body warmth started to deep through your clothes, and it was hard to stay focused and unflustered.
both of you arrived at a cosy apartment in a pretty unsuspecting area, it felt comforting. you didn’t expect to see a woman, graceful and beautiful awaiting your arrival. “this is my wife, Bedelia.” hannibal spoke smoothly, ushering her over. her walk was powerful and clean, the click of her heels made you nervous.
“well you are a sight to see.” Bedelia whispered, a smile tugging up at her rosy lips as she leaned in close to your ear. the warmth air from her mouth hit your skin, and it sent a rush of adrenaline through your poor trembling body.
everything was too hot, the room felt warped and dizziness coated your head. you felt drunk, drunk on these strikingly attractive people. “i need a moment for the toilet.” you smiled politely, Bedelia raised her arm and pointed down the hall on the left.
while in there, you stared at the drastically different person staring back. cheeks rosy, forehead sweaty, chest rising and falling rapidly. your heart felt restrained by the rib cage in front of it, serving as a barrier as the heart thumped ridiculously hard.
after composing yourself, you flattened your hair and strode into the dining room, you were at the head of the table, which felt out of place. the table was lined with a red cloth, blue and white plates which housed traditional italian cuisines, like Ossobuco and Bruschetta, it looked divine.
you avoided their gaze as you settled down, hannibal insisted on tucking your chair in as you sat, his hands had glided across your shoulders in the process, it was hard not to tell him you wanted them to stay there.
as the three of you sat, eating in content, the dishes were more than satisfactory. “how could we ever repay you?” Hannibal and Bedelia coincidentally said simultaneously, and chuffed slightly afterwards.
lewd and inappropriate thoughts came to mind- but were interrupted by the large hand trapping yours on the table. “or perhaps you already know hm?”

here's a fun picture of anthropomorphic veggie aliens.
I'm learning a lot about pixel art lately and really admiring the art i've seen others make. I have been wanting to make something just as polished and beautiful in this style, but over the last few days i noticed i wasn't making any art, because i don't have the skill or motor control to make it as "perfect" as it is in my mind.
I wanted to fight against this feeling in myself, and so i made some art that is at my current skill level, with the programs i have and the physical ability i have.
I'm extremely proud of myself for trying this out, and I like how playful it looks.
it feels very fun and expressive because i'm not concerned about the technical skill or "correctness" of it.
I really enjoy making art in this way.
{description: A janky, stylized drawling in MS paint, that depicts anthropomorphic vegetables on a dark green background.
One is a plump orange tomato person with a CRT instead of a head, and leaf nipples. The CRT displays a galaxy with a green star as a location icon.
To their right is a yellow and orange corn with wide open mouth and eyes. They eyes and mouth are black ovals with other red and white rings in the eyes. The corn seems distressed and is holding their large leaves up to express this. Between them is a cluster of small tomatoes, each with one very large eye.
In the background, over the shoulder of the large tomato person, is a simple flying saucer with three more small tomatoes.
The corn has a speech bubble in yellow and orange that says "AWE BEANS!" in all caps.

Easy From Seed Vegetables
The content of this blog post is from Home Garden Seed Association. It’s an excellent resource for home gardeners. They promote gardening from seed as the easy, natural and economical way to garden. Their website provides well researched and useful articles about how to garden from seed. Need inspo?
Beans, Beets, Cucumbers, Kale, Peas, Radishes, Salad Greens, Squash, Swiss Chard
Most of the vegetables typically grown in a home garden can be sown directly in the garden soil. These include salad greens of all kinds—lettuces, mizuna, arugula, spinach, and mustards—as well as beans and peas, root vegetables, summer and winter squash, and cool season cooked greens like kale and chard.
First, prepare the garden bed, loosening the soil and incorporating plenty of compost. Then, simply follow the guidelines below. In just weeks, your bountiful, delectable summer harvest will begin!
Left to right: Bean seedling, lettuce seedlings, chard seedling
Beans may be pole beans, or they may have a bush habit. In either case, wait until nighttime temps stay consistently above 50ºF to sow. For bush beans, poke seeds into the soil about an inch deep and 4 inches apart in rows that are about 1½ feet apart. Two sowings, about 3 weeks apart, will extend the harvest. For pole beans, be sure set up the trellis prior to planting time.
Beet seeds are actually clusters of seeds. Once danger of frost has passed plant them about an inch apart and ½ inch deep—and don’t be surprised if clumps of seedlings emerge. Thin them to about 2 inches apart when they are an inch or two tall, and again as the plants develop. When plants are 3 inches apart and plump enough for your purposes, you can harvest some at the baby stage, allowing others to enlarge.
Cucumbers will be set back by cold nights, so wait until nighttime temps stay above 50ºF. Sow 5 or 6 seeds, covered by an inch of soil, in a low mound, and thin to the 3 best plants as they start to develop. In a small garden, you can grow cucumbers up a trellis or fence.
Kale seeds can be sown in early spring, about 2 inches apart and ½ inch deep. Thin plants to about 12 inches apart when they are 3 to 4 inches tall, using the thinnings in salads. Begin harvesting outside leaves when plants have at least 6 sets of leaves. A second kale sowing in late summer will provide greens into the winter.
Peas, especially edible-podded peas, are a productive spring crop. They require some support, so plant seeds next to a fence or erect a structure to support them before planting. Sow seeds an inch deep and 2 to 3 inches apart in early spring. Generally, no thinning is needed.
Radish seeds can be sown in early spring, spaced 1 inch apart and covered with ½ inch of soil. Thin them early to 2 inches apart to give them room to develop. Rather than planting a big row, sow small amounts a week apart for a continuous harvest.
Salad Greens, planted thickly in wide rows, can be harvested two or even three times. Make successive small sowings until the weather turns hot for a steady supply of baby greens. Beginning in early spring, broadcast the seeds so that they fall about an inch apart and cover with ¼ inch of soil. Firm gently and keep the bed evenly moist. Harvest with scissors when they are 4 to 5 inches tall, and allow the plants to regrow.
Squash will be set back by cold nights, so wait to plant until nighttime temps stay above 50ºF. Sow 4 or 5 seeds in a low mound, covered by an inch of soil, and thin to the 2 best plants as they start to develop. Summer squash, such as zucchini or patty pan, are tender and tasty when harvested young, no larger than 6 inches. If you have the space, you can also plant summer and winter squashes in staggered rows.
Swiss Chard seeds, like beets, are clustered seeds. Sow them ½ inch deep and 2 inches apart once danger of frost has passed. Thin the seedlings when they develop two sets of leaves and add the thinnings to salads. Final spacing should be 12 to 15 inches apart.

Research | Common Garden Pests
The main enemies in my game are pests and other garden nuisances that one may commonly encounter when gardening. Since I want to keep to the theme of the micro-scale conflict, I decided that I want to mainly have pests be represented by insects and other small creatures.
Aphids
Aphids appear to get into every garden one way or the other, by far they are the most common pest. They are soft-bodied insects that feed by sucking the nutrient-rich liquids out of plants in order to sustain themselves. There are about 4,000 different species of aphids around the world. Low to moderate populations rarely need to be controlled and typically do not harm plants. However, the issue arises when they infest in droves.
Generally, adults are wingless, but some can grow wings, especially if populations are high. They have two whip-like antennae at the tip of the head and a pair of tube-like structures, called cornicles, projecting backward out of their hind end.
One surprising benefactor of aphids are ants, who protect them and use them as a source of food. Ants do not eat the aphids themselves, but sustain themselves on a secretion made by aphids called honeydew.
Aphids cluster together and quickly reproduce once they have colonized their selected host plant. Aphids pierce plant leaves and stems with their mouthparts, just like other sap-sucking insects do, to drain sap, nutrients, and moisture from the plant in the process. Adults and nymphs consume plant juices. Depending on the species, they attack leaves, stems, buds, flowers, fruit, and even the roots of the plant. Aphids are particularly attracted to fresh, new growth. Many aphid species, like the green peach aphid, are generalist feeders, while others, like the rosy apple aphid, are highly specific in the plants they feed on. The younger the plant, the more vulnerable it is to long-term damage. As they feed on the plant, certain kinds of aphids inject a toxin into the plant, which causes additional difficulties to the plant’s growth.
Beetle Pests
Beetles are a divisive group of insects in gardens. Some are beneficial, especially in vegetable gardens, while others are garden pests. Many beetle varieties feed on plant material, including a plant’s leaves and stems, which can ultimately kill a plant. Other beetle varieties are harmful because they carry bacteria that can infect plants. For any type of pest, it's important to kill a bad bug before it can lay eggs and cause a larger infestation. These are a few types of potentially harmful garden beetles.
Cucumber Beetle : Can destroy a garden in two ways: by feeding on or infecting the plant. The larvae feed on roots, and the adults eat the stems, stalks, and blossoms of flowering plants. If they don’t destroy your garden by eating the plants, they also carry bacteria that can cause a condition called bacteria wilt. Once the beetle infects it, the plant will die.
Flea Beetle : Eats plant materials like leaves, but they are more harmful because they carry viral and bacterial diseases that destroy plants.
Japanese Beetle : Capable of eating plant tissue quickly, and can kill a plant in a few days. A tell-tale sign of a Japanese beetle infestation is a plant with skeleton-looking leaves
Leaf Beetle : There are several thousand species of leaf beetles, and each one feeds on a different type of plant. For example, there are potato beetles, elm leaf beetles, bean leaf beetles, willow leaf beetles, and tens of thousands more. What they all have in common is that they destroy the plant by eating its leaves.
Earwig
Earwigs are among the most readily recognized insect pests in home gardens. Although earwigs can devastate seedling vegetables or annual flowers and often seriously damage maturing soft fruit or corn silks, they also have a beneficial role in the landscape and have been shown to be important predators of aphids.
The adult earwig is readily identified by a pair of prominent appendages that resemble forceps at the tail end of its body. Most species have wings under short, hard wing covers, but they seldom fly. Immature earwigs look like adults except they are smaller and lack wings. Earwigs feed on a variety of dead and living organisms, including insects, mites, and growing shoots of plants. They are voracious feeders on soft-bodied insects such as aphids and insect eggs and can exert significant biological control under some circumstances.
Despite their benefits, they can cause substantial damage to seedling plants and soft fruit as well as to sweet corn. Damaged seedlings may be missing all or parts of their leaves and stem. Leaves on older plants, including fruit trees, have numerous irregular holes or are chewed around the edges. This damage may resemble that caused by caterpillars. They are also common in moist environments.
Whiteflies
Whiteflies are a common pest of plants, particularly greenhouse plants, and a vector of several plant diseases. Despite their name, whiteflies are not true flies. Rather, they are in the order Hemiptera along with many other plant pests such as aphids, mealybugs, and scales.
The exact appearance of whiteflies depends on the species. Generally, adult whiteflies measure less than 2mm in length and have four wings covered in white wax. The wings are usually white, sometimes with gray markings. All immature stages are wingless, and the first nymphal stage, called a crawler, is barely visible as it moves around the leaf before settling to feed. Later instar nymphs are immobile and flattened with reduced legs, resembling small scale insects, and may be visible on the underside of leaves. Adults and nymphs feed by penetrating the phloem with their proboscis and sucking plant fluids.
The main threat that comes with whiteflies is not the damage the bug can do to the plant itself, but the disease it carries with its infestations, and the potential spread of this disease to other plants.
Mealybugs
Mealybugs, similar to aphids, can pose a serious threat, especially to young plants. They feed off plants by sucking the juice from them, and can cause severe damage to most plants. One can spot mealybugs by their white, cottony appearance. They are small, flat, and waxy with oval, segmented bodies. Mealybugs are quite small, usually between 1/20 and 1/5-inch long. Mealybugs prefer warm temperatures and are often found in houseplants or outdoor plants in warm climates.
The first sign of a mealybug infestation is white, cottony, or waxy substances on your plants. Mealybugs often cluster together in colonies, typically where they lay their eggs and continue to feed. These clusters can range in size from small groups to larger masses, resembling fluffy white cotton balls. Another telltale sign is the secretion of honeydew, similar to aphids. As such, they too have a symbiotic relationship with ants, who act as their protectors, which makes it even more challenging to cull the infestation. Overwatering your plants and over-fertilizing them can increase the risk of mealybugs, so it must be noted to keep these things in check when caring for growing plants.
Slugs and Snails
Pest snails and slugs damage plant seeds, seedlings, underground tubers, leaves and fruit. Damage to seedlings often results in the death of the plant, which means major production losses. Snails like wet and damp conditions. They tend to come out into the open after dark, or after rainfall.
Snails are one of the more deadly pests that one can encounter in their home garden, and can sometimes come in waves that destroy entire gardens very quickly. They are not fussy about their meals and are particularly attracted to citric aromas.
Interestingly, some plants offer a natural line of defense against snails. Planting these snail-resistant varieties in a garden can help deter these pests and reduce the damage they cause.
Geraniums : These beautiful flowering plants have a scent that snails find unattractive, making them an excellent choice for a snail-proof garden.
Ferns : Many ferns, particularly the sword fern, are unpalatable to snails due to their leathery leaves and lack of tender, juicy stems that snails love.
Mint : This aromatic herb has a strong scent that snails dislike.
Lavender : Much like mint, lavender’s strong scent is off-putting to snails. It is also very hardy, and resilient against drought conditions.
Rosemary : This herb is both unappetizing to snails, and is a perennial plant requiring minimal maintenance.
These are the main, most threatening common garden presences when considering pests in a home garden setting. Others, such as porcupines, peacocks, groundhogs, and other small mammals are less common, but cause much larger scale damages to the infrastructure of the garden.
