Actually no . Why are Victor&Henry so Will&Nico coded? Clerval nursing Victor for several months while he had his fever, victor always overworking himself and not wanting to open up to anyone . Clerval being so amazed by nature and science and wanting to share that with Victor . Do you see my vision

Henry: I've already sent good vibes your way… they’re coming. There’s nothing you can do to stop them. Victor: This is the most threatening way I’ve ever been cheered up.

hi quinn!!!! for the oc asks i would like to know 7 for pluto and 14 for clerval!!! i love you !!
725. What is your favorite thing about your OC?
honestly? very confidently i can say i absolutely nailed pluto's design. its probably some of my best work. i think it really set in after i got it modeled by @/streetdevil96 like yeah. fuck yeah i designed that
Tumblr media
14. How does your OC want to be seen by other characters?
clerval above all else wants to be regarded with a deep respect that they think one of their age and power deserves. although they tend to behave callously around their siblings, aware that they cannot really alter the others's opinions on them, they do make the effort to appear amicable to guests of the velvet room, and hope through that and a healthy dose of intimidation where necessary that they'll be treated with the degree of reverence they want.

Volume III Chapter IV/V of the original 1818 text of Frankenstein lives in my brain rent free. I need to rant about Clerval’s death or I’ll loose it. (It’s late and I’m exhausted rn so my ass is NOT as coherent and structured as it could be but fuck it we ball)
“He appeared to be a handsome young man, about five and twenty years of age.” MY PRECIOUS BOY
“(…) having brought the body into her house; it was not cold. They put it into a bed, and rubbed it; and Daniel went to the town for an apothecary, but life was quite gone.” HE MIGHTN’T HAVE BEEN DEAD WHEN THEY FOUND HIM BUT IT WAS TOO LATE
“I saw the lifeless form of Henry Clerval stretched before me. I gasped for breath; and, throwing myself on the body, I exclaimed, “Have my murderous machinations deprived you also, my dearest Henry, of life? Two I have already destroyed; other victims await their destiny: but you, Clerval, my friend, my benefactor”——
The human frame could no longer support the agonizing suffering that I endured, and I was carried out of the room in strong convulsions.
A fever succeeded to this. I lay for two months on the point of death (…)” THE WAY VICTOR REACTS TO AND SPIRALS FROM CLERVAL’S DEATH IS SO MUCH MORE SEVERE THAN ANYTHING ELSE THAT HAPPENS TO HIM and it’s also an extremely interesting character study to see what happens when the only person he ever really seemed to have a mutual loving and healthy relationship with gets cut out of the picture – Victor’s had his fevers, he’s wallowed, but he always had Clerval to draw him from his wallowing and to nurse him back to health. So what happens when Clerval’s death is the cause of that anguish? THE DRAMA THE ANGST I love these silly little gothic losers to death but watching Frankenstein grieve over the passing of who was pretty much essentially his lover is fascinating to me and it SHOWS how much Frankenstein adores Clerval through the latter’s death. THE MAGNITUDE OF HIS GRIEF IS A TESTAMENT TO THEIR LOVE oml i can’t rn frfr THEYRE SO GAY AND SO GOTHIC I CAN NOT
“Why did I not die? More miserable than man ever was before, why did I not sink into forgetfulness and rest?” “I thank you; but all that you mention is nothing to me: on the whole earth there is no comfort which I am capable of receiving.” “(…)surely I should have died on the coffin of Henry.” AGAIN Victor’s absolute grief tearing himself up over it
“As my sickness quitted me, I was absorbed by a gloomy and black melancholy, that nothing could dissipate. The image of Clerval was for ever before me, ghastly and murdered.” “Sometimes they were the expressive eyes of Henry, languishing in death, the dark orbs nearly covered by the lids, and the long black lashes that fringed them.” Again what I said about his grief being a testament to their love bro, REMINISCING ABOUT HIS DEAD LOVER AND HIS BEAUTY EVEN IN DEATH WHILE GRIEVING HIM I CANT BRO
“Ah! my father, do not remain in this wretched country; take me where I may forget myself, my existence, and all the world.” HERE’S THE START OF HIM PUSHING AWAY THE MEMORY AND TRYING TO SUPPRESS IT BECAUSE THE GRIEF IS TOO SEVERE and that is SO interesting for how he shifts his tone with Elizabeth and puts up that fake demeanour of wanting to marry her because he thinks it’ll make HER happy even though both of them describe dreading the wedding, also possibly another argument for the legitimacy of reading Clerval and Frankenstein’s relationship as romantic – in order to forget him, he assigns himself to the role given to him as a child by marrying Elizabeth and gives up whatever he hope he had (possibly discouraged from Clerval being murdered as a response to Victor refusing to finish the Bride and subject her to the same fate as him and Elizabeth to the Creature, a pact made without her knowledge or consent, an arranged marriage. Where has spiting that tradition led him? Where has him standing up to the shroud of his mother’s dying wishes, hanging over him the entire novel thus far, led him, by refusing to force the Bride into an arranged marriage with the Creature, as he was with Elizabeth? To the death of the one man he truly loved. So fuck it, right? He can at least “make his dear cousin happy” and not die spiting the one thing he was meant to do – make his mother proud from beyond the grave by marrying Elizabeth.)
“the wind that blew me from the detested shore of Ireland(…)” sorry my country traumatised you bro (I mentioned to one of my teachers while explaining the plot of Frankenstein to them, as you do, that this chapter takes place in Ireland and the “god damn ok” face was priceless)
“I was deceived by no vision, and that Clerval, my friend and dearest companion, had fallen a victim to me and the monster of my creation. I repassed, in my memory, my whole life; my quiet happiness while residing with my family in Geneva, the death of my mother, and my departure for Ingolstadt. I remembered shuddering at the mad enthusiasm that hurried me on to the creation of my hideous enemy, and I called to mind the night during which he first lived. I was unable to pursue the train of thought; a thousand feelings pressed upon me, and I wept bitterly.” HE’S TRYING SO DESPERATELY TO LEAVE IT BEHIND AND TO REPRESS IT but now he’s left Ireland and he’s no longer feverish, the clarity washes over him and he can’t do anything except just lie there and cry over everything that’s happened AND MY POOR LAD HE CANT EVEN CONTINUE BEYOND THE POINT OF THE CREATURES REANIMATION BECAUSE THOSE FEELINGS PRESS DOWN ON HIM AND CROWD HIM AND OVERWHELM HIM AND HE JUST BREAKS INTO SOBS
And what happens after “the night during which he first lived”?
He’s saved from his own downward spiral by Clerval.
What’s he doing now?
Going on a downward spiral.
Where’s Clerval?
Dead.
“Ever since my recovery from the fever I had been in the custom of taking every night a small quantity of laudanum; for it was by means of this drug only that I was enabled to gain the rest necessary for the preservation of life. Oppressed by the recollection of my various misfortunes, I now took a double dose, and soon slept profoundly. But sleep did not afford me respite from thought and misery; my dreams presented a thousand objects that scared me.” And Christ above THIS LINE, not only can he now physically not sleep at night after what happened, but he’s gotten into the habit of drug use over it – which wouldn’t have been too bizarre by Victorian standards, but in the 18th century, laudanum wasn’t administered nearly as liberally and was mostly used for surgery, from what I can find, anyway. Not to mention that fact that he starts double dosing on it as the memories come back to him – his grief starts getting to the point where he’s using drug use in order to cope, but it hardly matters as his torment follows him to sleep.
“We had resolved not to go to London, but to cross the country to Portsmouth, and thence to embark for Havre. I preferred this plan principally because I dreaded to see again those places in which I had enjoyed a few moments of tranquillity with my beloved Clerval. I thought with horror of seeing again those persons whom we had been accustomed to visit together, and who might make inquiries concerning an event, the very remembrance of which made me again feel the pang I endured when I gazed on his lifeless form in the inn at ——.” THIS LINE LIVES IN MY BRAIN. RENT FREE. HOW COULD SHELLEY HAVE CUT THIS OUT OF THE 1831 PUBLICATION THIS IS SO GOLDEN DEAR LORD I ADORE THEM.
“MY BELOVED CLERVAL”
BUT ALSO AGAIN we’ve got Frankenstein trying SO desperately to forget everything, and he knows that he can’t face the people who knew Clerval or he’d break down. And I love the way this version continues on his grief to the next chapter – it’s not done and dropped, its ongoing and it plagues him, and it will plague him as long as he lives. I wonder what would happen if he did go through London, if he did meet those people again. Would things have turned out differently? Would he finally have been given a sense of comfort and clarity through mutual grief, as nobody so far since Henry’s death and for the rest of the book, except the creature, ironically, has grieved for Clerval except for Frankenstein. If he met people who took as fondly to Clerval as he did, at least on meeting him briefly, who would have sympathy towards Victor – would he finally have that space to grieve for him in a healthy way, to be comforted by people who at least vaguely understand a fraction of his anguish?
The way Victor Frankenstein BREAKS after the death of Henry Clerval is one of the most fascinating and endearing parts of the novel that completely lives in my head rent free. He spirals, he becomes ill, he becomes deeply suicidal and depressed, he begins drug misuse – and adaptations have the sheer balls to cut Clerval out of the story altogether.
…..”My beloved Clerval” HELP ME HE ACTUALLY SAID IT I LOVE THEM SO MUCH

Keep seeing people like hahahehe I hope Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein is sooooooo gay hehe I hope Victor and the Creature have soooo much homoerotic tension hehehe
I hope the fuck not
Frankenstein already has gay in it. His name is Henry fucking ray-of-sunshine-i-can-fix-him Clerval. Put him back in the goddamn narrative or so help me. We don't need to put the gay in where it doesn't belong when we can have Victor be his little gay self with the actual person canonically has Strong Feelings About (and who canonically has Strong Feelings About him too).

hey sorry for the inactivity ! been super busy with my school’s show nd shit pls take this as swisstom peace offering
“So, Mary Shelley wrote ‘Frankenstein’ why?” Swiss asked, listening intently to Phantom’s rambling of a recent documentary he watched.
Phantom leans forward from where he’s sitting on his bed, setting both hands in between his crossed legs.
“Right, so she was with her friends and her future husband Percy Bysshe Shelley, and Mr. Shelley proposed a challenge. The challenge was who could write the scariest story over the summer—also the only reason why Mary Shelley wrote so beautifully is because her father was a philosopher and often times let Mary Shelley listen in on his academic conversations with his fellow philosophers.”
“Uh huh.” Swiss nods his head, not really following along with the words Phantom is saying.
“Yes so anyway, Mary Shelley is struggling to come up with an idea—OH also she has a lot of trauma with her mother because she died giving birth to Mary just an FYI. Ok so Mary is struggling to come up with an idea and one night she gets a nightmare and this nightmare sparks her idea for ‘Frankenstein’ and that’s why she wrote the first science fiction novel and started the whole genre.”
Phantom finishes his explanation, clearly looking at Swiss with the intent of asking him if he wanted to hear about the book too. It’s not like Swiss didn’t want to hear about the themes of ‘Frankenstein’ he just was caught off guard by this impromptu rambling.
Unsure how to respond, Swiss hesitates for a moment before nodding in agreement. Intrigued, he leans forward, signaling Phantom to go on with the explanation of "Frankenstein."
Halfway into Phantom’s retelling of chapter 6, Swiss interrupts him, “So buggy, you’re telling me…Henry Clerval and Victor Frankenstein are not gay?”
Phantom pauses, caught off guard by Swiss's unexpected question. A bemused smile forms on his face as he responds,
"Well, there are a lot of interpretations, but I think the focus of 'Frankenstein' is more focused on things like…responsibility and isolation. Although, some people probably have explored the relationship between Victor and Henry. I think there’s also some writings involving Victor and Robert Walton from the letters too"
Swiss leans back, contemplating this revelation, a mischievous grin forming.
"Imagine rewriting this into making it a love story between Victor and Henry" he muses, sparking a playful discussion.
Phantom stares at Swiss for a second.
“I think that defeats the whole purpose of what Mary Shelley was trying to say.”
Swiss rolls his eyes, “If Mary Shelley didn’t want people to think about Henry and Victor in this way she wouldn’t have made this so homoerotic!”
“I should’ve just talked to Rain about this” Phantom groans
Swiss feigns a hurt look on his face before crossing his arms and turning away from Phantom, seemingly fake pouting.
Phantom panics before scooting towards Swiss in his bed. “Oh Swiss baby I didn’t mean it like that I’m sorry!”
Swiss shakes his head, refusing to look at Phantom which causes him to quietly whine.
“Swissss I’m sorry! Please forgive me I didn’t mean it like that!!” Phantom looks apologetically at Swiss, staring at him with teary doe eyes.
Swiss opens one eye to glance at Phantom, smiling before suddenly turning and tickling his sides to no abandon.
Phantom shrieks and immediately starts squirming. Laughing and jerking limbs everywhere. Soon tears are streaming down his face from laughing so hard.
“S-Swiss st—“ He giggles, “Stop stop!!”
“This is what happens when you’d rather talk with Rain than hang out with me!” Swiss giggles back at Phantom.
Within fits of laughter, Phantom stutters out broken apologies to Swiss, never escaping his ongoing tickling.
“I’ll forgive you if you admit that Victor and Henry are gay” Swiss grins, pausing his tickle punishment to give Phantom a chance to respond.
Phantom look’s at Swiss and wipes away his tears, quietly sighing before agreeing with him that Henry and Victor, are in fact gay.
Swiss kisses Phantom earnestly on the cheek, before deciding to give a quick kiss all over the rest of his face. The room fills with soft giggling as Swiss continues his playful assault of kisses, each one met with Phantom's contagious laughter.
Phantom settled in on Swiss’ chest, grounded by his warmth. The weight of documentary still fresh in his mind slowly turning into appreciation for Swiss.
Who would he talk to after he’s done with his shows if not for Swiss?
Instead of worrying about it too much he just finds good company in Swiss, leeching off of his warmth and slowly falling asleep.
Swiss runs his hands through Phantom’s hair, twirling it between his fingers in a soothing manner until Phantom fell asleep. Swiss gives one final kiss to his forehead before pulling a blanket over them both and drifting off to sleep.
In the morning Swiss woke up to a cold bed, but he found a copy of ‘Frankenstein’ on his bedside table with a note saying,
“i highlighted all of the tension between henry and victor for you <3
— phan”

Gothic Horror HCs But Using The Penny Dreadful Versions As Well Cus I Like Them
Hello, So recently I have been really obsessed with 1800s gothic horror literature.
My favorite books are (in order);
1. Frankenstein The Modern Prometheus
2. The Picture Of Dorian Gray
3. The Strange Case Of Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde
4. Dracula
So imagine my fucking excitement when I heard there was a show that used THOSE EXACT FOUR BOOKS!!!!
Anyway I thought I'd take the time to talk about my favorite characters from the books/show and hcs I have for them all.
Now massive Trigger Warning for some ableism/sanism from the victorian era but also current day, and also queermisia.
All of these characters are canon ND I believe based off of their canon "madness" and I also believe they were all queer men.
----
Victor Frankenstein
Tumblr media
Victor is a trans man you must understand this. He literally has postpartum depression in the book. He is also forced into an arranged marriage with a woman but has so much more chemistry with his best friend Henry Clerval. I think he's gay and his love for both Elizabeth and Lilly are just comphet. (He loves Elizabeth like a sister tho).
Victor is also disabled in the book. In Penny Dreadful he also has asthma! I also hc Victor is autistic. In the book he has a special interest in alchemy and science. He info dumps about poetry and clocks a lot in Penny Dreadful lmao. He's also just awkward like me fr fr. There was also a rlly funny scene in Penny Dreadful where everyone noticed this one character was a trans woman and made a "face" of surprise. Victor never did because honestly I don't think he fucking noticed. Which made me laugh because I didn't either.
Dorian Gray
Tumblr media
This man is just me sometimes and I kinda hate it. Definitely has BPD. He treats life as a fantasy and has a hard time applying reality to reality. He also will love you one second and can hate you so passionately the next. Henry Wotton is most definitely his favorite person. There's also an entire chapter in the book dedicated to talking about his hyperfixations. Dorian is also bisexual! He falls in love with a few women in the book and Penny Dreadful. But also many men! Oscar Wilde was gay and put a lot of himself into Dorian lmao.
Henry Jekyll
Tumblr media
Look the guy with daddy issues. Seriously out of all the things they chose to adapt for Penny Dreadful this made me laugh the most (in a good way). It's a random throwaway line in the book but I'm glad they kept it because his father leads to Henry's toxic mindset. Henry feels the need to be respectful in high society and not indulge his "indecent" thoughts. These thoughts include things like murder but also homosexual desires. The man is gay, love that for him. Don't let the musical fool you. I think his other violent thoughts come from OCD intrusive thoughts. As a median system I do also relate to the duality he feels. But I also would be careful ever putting a plural reading on Jekyll and Hyde for obvious reasons.
Robert Montague Renfield
Tumblr media
Oh Renfield so much to say about you my man. (This is where that TW comes in handy)
Ok so the R.M. of his name standing for "Robert Montague" is ONLY from the new 2023 movie "Renfield". Renfield never had a first name because Bram Stoker was an ableist dick who saw Renfield as less than human for his mental illness. So out of spite of him and love for Renfield I hc his name to be Robert in all versions. This isn't to praise the new movie for its handle on mental illness though. While I absolutely adore the movie and it's camp and message I can't look past the ableism. It constantly demonizes NPD and for the topic of our discussion writes out Robert's mental illness. Robert in the book has psychosis and periods of mania and depression. Honestly I'll have to reread his sections of the book soon and see if I change my opinion because I had a hard time thinking of a label for him. Anyway I think he has Bipolar! But this is why I prefer Penny Dreadful over Renfield 2023 for the character. He gets to be mentally ill and still do a good thing and be just like everyone else in the show (not good or bad, just gray). On the topic of Renfield 2023 again I also think they (Drac and Ren) are ex lovers lmao, I mean it's literally framed like that they just don't have the balls to say it. I now just read every version like this. So yes another Bi king! Wow this ended up mainly being about Renfield whoops.
----
So yeah as you can see I really like the books and Penny Dreadful. I loved that Penny Dreadful wasn't scared to make its characters ND coded like a certain someone *cough* Renfield 2023 *cough* and be faithful to the OGs!
Anyway I'm not a medical professional lmao, I've just researched a lot of stuff trying to figure out my own problems and it's also smth I take an interest in. The queer stuff I am a professional tho /j.
Was this post messy? Oh yeah, wouldn't have it any other way.
