#cleaned to the nines

Dear Ken Diary,

So I did something today for like the first time ever, and I’m not proud of it. But! I had a good reason! And it wasn’t like I chose to do it; it just happened before I even realized I did it.

You ready for this? You’re not ready for this. I wasn’t even ready for this. Here it goes…

I fainted.

Dude. I fainted. Eyes rolled to the back of my head, fell ungraciously backwards, and I’m pretty sure my feet kicked up and out after I fell. You know like

Yeah, it wasn’t pretty. Thankfully though! No one got it on camera, so I’m safe there.

But the reason why it happened to begin with was because Artist Ken was moving his painting supplies to a different room in the Mojo Dojo Casa House that waded more suited for painting, and one of the Kens helping him accidentally spilled like 5 pints of paint on my fauxjo mojo mink coat! 😱

I know! Not the coat! But yeah, the coat.

After I was revived, Ken and Artist Ken apologized like a bunch of times which I really appreciated, and then! We rushed my poor coat to the cleaners. The Barbie who runs the cleaners - Cleaned to the Nines - was like…I think the best word is flabbergasted. Which is also like a really fun word to say. Try it. Flabbergasted. Flabbergasted. Who came up with that anyway? It’s a Weird one. I like it.

Anyway, Barbie was flabbergasted. Nevertheless, she was totally confident in her ability to restore the coat to its former glory. But it was a tough job. Most jobs of hers take like 5 minutes. Mine took 15 whole minutes! It was a total nail-biter!

But finally! My beloved fauxjo mojo mink was returned to me. I’m wearing it right now. First of all, it’s totally comfortable and warm, and secondly, I’m totally rewriting the whole “patriarchy” (gag!) connection the coat has. It’s totally so much more than that!

Kakanaru au where kakashi gets hurt on a mission and passes out in the middle of a forest on the way back to Konoha.

When he wakes up he’s neatly laid out in the middle of an old shrine, with fresh bandages wrapped around his stitched up wounds and warm tea at his elbow.

The fact he remained unconscious through someone moving him and closing his wounds was discontenting even if it wasn’t particularly surprising. He did lose a lot of blood and chakra after all.

Now that he’s awake, kakashi knows he should leave. He knows better than to test his luck staying in place for too long anywhere outside of the village.

But…he’s curious. And despite the stitches, he’s still in danger of infection considering Konoha is over a week away in his current state.

So he leverages himself up, and tries to look around as much as he can. But the entire shrine is empty. Not a single sign of the one that helped him.

When he wakes up again a few hours later there’s a pot of warm tea at his side to replace the old cup, a little pile of fruit, and new bandages. The day after that, there’s sake and plum wine added to the mix.

Kakashi doesn’t really know what’s happening but he’s never been one to sit idle nor has he ever been an ungrateful man. So as soon as he’s able to get up without his head spinning he gets to work. he sweeps the floors and dusts the cobwebs. Even polishes a little golden fox statue he finds tucked behind a wooden alter.

It’s the least he could do for his hidden host. The caretaker of this place maybe?

Kakashi’s body and chakra recovers faster than he anticipated. After five days he leaves even as the Hatake part of him that lives in back of his head keens.

Before he goes he pats the golden fox on the head. It was oddly cute compared to the 9 statues of snarling stone foxes surrounding it, though there was undeniable beauty in those too.

A few months later he’s injured again and realizes the shrine is on his way back to Konoha. He stops there to rest for the night and heads out in the morning, only taking the time to drink some of the tea and wipe down the alter, barely noticing how his chakra coils have refilled already.

And it keeps happening whenever he gets injured. He comes, he rests, he cleans, and goes with a pat to the gold statues head.

Until one day he wakes up to a long limbed blond at his side instead of the usual tea and fruits. When the blanket shifts to reveal a bare back and smooth tan skin he thanks every god out there for his mask covering his blush. Sleepy blue eyes blink open at him right on cue and honestly? Kakashi thinks he deserved that for not putting the pieces together earlier.

“Then what if one day I wake up and I cannot remember you? Or the girls?”

“Then we’ll help you remember all over again. All of us.”

“But what if”—

“You were having that nightmare about Tantiss, weren’t you?”

“Yes. I…don’t want to…go back to being….”

“Listen, Tech Ninety-Nine Genoa: you are never going back to that ever again. I promise.”

For the day five prompt of ND Tech Week. I’m thinking it takes Tech a little while to get back home, and a little while longer to figure out who he really is. He still has some rough days, and worries in ways he didn’t before. Whatever happened to him, and whatever he did afterwards, was something he couldn’t control—and it kept him away for so much longer than he wanted. Still, every once in while it hits him how much they lost, and how much they got back, and in spite of everything he thinks he must be the luckiest man in the galaxy to have come out the other side. After all, better late than dead. As Phee always says. (Or did that one time.)

I live for your DAV opinions. It's so nice to know I'm not alone in being bitterly disappointed with the destruction of the lore, our previous choices and what could have been.

I feel that the worst part about the whole destruction of southern thedas/previous choices/story is that it really adds nothing to DATV? Rook/new players have no connection to southern thedas, we don't even see southern thedas...the only people who will care about the southern half of the continent are the players who have played the past games.

If you're a newcomer to the series, you're not going to care about some far off nations that you've never seen. If you're a returning player? Of course, it's going to be devastating! Especially since they specifically mention all the places we went in the previous games - really hammering it in, thanks BioWare!

It's the equivalent of a DM clearing the board, tearing up character sheets, and telling you to 'shut up, move on. we're over this character/place! stop asking about them - they're dead now!'

Like, I'm sorry you made me care for the world/characters/story you crafted? It just feels oddly spiteful, especially since they made a point to deliberately single out places like Kirkwall and Denerim. By all means, have the south face their own troubles - but going scorched earth? Telling us this in some missives and a few lines of dialogue? For a series that differentiated itself from other games by selling us a continuous/interconnected story narrative...nuking it all was a wild choice.

Mad At Yi Why Anon - Thanks for explaining! It makes more sense now lol. I never expected them to be grateful for being "saved," I'd just think it's certainly a choice for them to Most Mad at the only guy who wasn't going to let them rot. But if it's a "we need someone to blame" then that makes sense.

Even if he wasn’t gonna let them rot, he WAS gonna take them out with him had his True Ending Sacrifice gone as it had in the game. They don’t know this, this is just extra DoobYi characterization. But he wasn’t expecting to be alive, either tbh.

That said, he takes the public opinion of him and the Sols very seriously and doesn’t blame them even if sometimes the grievances are heavy-handed. This is a Yi who will apologize many times over for the actions of the council, for the failure of the project, for the lies and the lives ruined, both apemen and solarian, and for the individual hurts he’s caused to Kuafu, Goumang, Shaunshuan and Heng. If Eigong and many of the other Sols are not here to share the responsibility, then he will shoulder the blame, as he believes he should. Even if, y’know, everyone who IS glad he didn’t die is telling him to knock it off.
