how to successfully rebrand⋆.ೃ࿔*:･🧁

this post is a collaboration with my FAVORITE @prettieinpink. in this post we'll elaborate on rebranding urself and implementing change in a way that is not only efficient but not that difficult to do ✨

FLIP THE SCRIPT ;

write down who u wanna become. what ur goals are, what ur style is like, ur schedule, achievements, relationships etc. however instead of writing it like "it'll happen one day" write it as though it happened already.

on the flip side i want u to write down what u think hinders you or blocks u from making the rebrand that u want so desperately. ur weakness. then flip them and find solutions on how to deal with it entirely, or diminish it significantly.

EXPAND ON UR BEAUTY ;

learn how to do makeup that is suited for ur own features. learn which clothes and colors compliment and flatter you the best. when u try and use a cookie-cutter approach to beauty as a way to fit a standard, you won't feel/look ur best.

thats why its important to know your own self the very best. no one knows ur beauty and body like you do so only you know best how to make ur beauty bloom.

DEVELOP UR OWN STYLE ;

u dont have to follow along with every single trend that u see in the fashion industry. although its fun at times or the particular trend can inspire u to create more outfits, its important to have a sense of individuality when u dress.

i recommend creating a pinterest board and filling it up with clothes that u love and clothes that align with ur style. find a fashion inspiration or multiple if u dont know where to start. when u go shopping, reference this board and look for clothes that r similar to the clothes in ur pinterest board.

REFRESH BUTTON ;

block the numbers of people that keep u trapped in a version of urself that u no longer associate with. get comfy with the block button girlies!! you can control who sticks around you and you're directly responsible for protecting ur peace.

delete photos of people who are no longer in ur life (like, they hurt u or walked out of ur life/vice versa) change up ur environment and what ur staring at every single day. unfollow people on social media who dont inspire you/who make u feel bad about urself and where u are on ur rebranding journey.

ADAPT ;

remember that list that we made earlier? lets learn to adapt habits can cultivate that and make this rebrand thrive. identify nonsense in ur life and learn how to get comfortable with cutting it off.

EXECUTE ;

now its time to put everything that we've covered into a action with a few easy and simple steps.

do ur SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats)

create solutions to what u classify as ur weakness

commit to yourself and your rebrand

jzx’s death all the way up to pledge conference at nightless city (where wwx dies): nightfall (chapters 76-78) in novel, episodes 32-33 in cql

yi city: grasses (chapters 33-42) in novel, episodes 37-39 in cql

I... love... pain... أ‿أ I mean it’s not just in mdzs/ cql, in any show I watch or book I read, whatever part makes me cry has a high chance of becoming my favourite part of that show/ book (‘-’*) 

(which reminds me of the 1 year with cql event back in june, where there was a prompt for favourite episode and a few people went with the really warm and happy ones - which I totally understand because I love those too - but I went with the angsty and painful 32 Ｔ▽Ｔ)

I'm definitely joining you in the XXC/SL bubble haha. The cultivator event was so much fun!! I'm really going to miss it as well! And I've yet to listen to Blackpink's album, been putting this off for too long😂 Vinyls are so great!! My dad has a vinyl player and lots of old (80s/90s) vinyls and to me, listening to them is just comfort, comfort, comfort! I've actually given him some of my favourite albums on vinyl, too, but mostly I listen to his W.A.S.P./Warlock/Steeler/Accept etc. stuff -✨

Even though my top Spotify band of 2020 was one of my oldest favourites, I've discovered so much new stuff this year! My favourite releases (albums) would have to be HUMAN:||:NATURE by Nightwish, Folkesange by Myrkur and folklore by Taylor Swift. As for songs, I really loved Endlessness by Nightwish, Abyss of Time - Countdown to Singularity by Epica, exile by Taylor Swift, God's Menu by Stray Kids and Zombie by Day6. There are lots more of course, but those are the top ones! -✨

As for books, I actually only just got a little spark for reading back, too, I really didn't read a lot this year unfortunately. My top 3 books I read were The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern, Steppenwolf by Hermann Hesse (compulsory school lecture) and The Child's First Life by Jun Cai, which I actually haven't even finished but oh well. I aspire to read a lot more (and MDZS) next year, though! -✨

Now that the year is almost over, I'd like to ask you to list the good things that happened! It's been quite the tough year but still (or maybe especially because of that) it makes me very happy to find out more about the good things that happened to others! -✨

There’s just something so cosy about listening to music playing on a record player, isn’t there? 🥰 My Mum’s always been a huge music lover, so she has a rather large collection of vinyl’s she brought when she was younger. She likes to listen to some of the vinyl’s I have too, especially since it means she’s found a few new singers she likes like Florence Welch and Lana Del Rey. My Dad mostly likes listening to movie soundtracks he has through them, which is always super nice! 💕

Reading this year has just felt so difficult to do, hasn’t it? 😫 Here’s hoping 2021 will be better for kicking us out of our reading slumps! I have the Night Circus in my too read pile as well, so I must get to that at some point! I also have the authors newer book too, The Starless Sea. I’m a little anxious to start it though since I’m not sure if I’ll like it or not since reviews for it seemed a little mixed, but I’ll never know if I don’t try it 😊

After a tough 2019, sticking to my 2020 promise to myself and trying to focus more on my own happiness rather than constantly pleasing others helped a lot with my mental health. It wasn’t easy, but it was necessary to do and even though this year has been tough and isolating in general for everyone I’ve felt a lot better in myself knowing I’m not going to let certain things bother me anymore. 

In a weird way, I feel like I’ve connected more with some of my friends this year despite seeing so little of them? Whether that’s down to reaching out and communicating through other ways or not, it’s been really nice! 😊 I kinda feel that things like all the lockdowns have also had this weird way of strengthening some connections just through how creative we’ve all had to get with keeping in touch with our friends and loved ones, and although I miss the friends and family I can’t see like I usually do, at least we’ve kept in contact!

This one’s going to sound a bit mushy - but finding a real comfort in a fandom circle again. I’ve been on tumblr for a little over ten years now, and I’ve never really felt like I’ve been a part of a fandom, despite having been involved in a number of other fandoms. The Untamed / MDZS fandom has honestly and truly been the loveliest, most inviting fandom, and I absolutely love how connected it feels. Being a part of it has given me the confidence to take part in fandom events and wanting to return to making graphics properly for the first time in years, and I now find it really relaxing to return to. The community built here is honestly so lovely, and I’m so glad I get to be a part of it 💖

Finding the Untamed, and it reigniting so many of my old loves. A love of creating content, a pull out of a long writing slump, a return to loving dramas after so long. It’s a story I know I’m going to be thankful for for a long time, because it’s just brought me so much happiness in a year that’s just been difficult for everyone. It’s given me the drive once again to explore and learn more about Chinese traditions and cultures, so much so that it sparked me buying other novels that I’m eager to enjoy. 

Some of the video games I’ve played have honestly been little pockets of happiness throughout the year. I got to fall in love with Final Fantasy VII all over again through remake, which is honestly such a dream in and of itself as I never thought we’d see such a stunning game get to shine with a remake. Animal Crossing has been a godsend, and I’m so thankful for it being there as both a relaxing escape and a way to keep in contact and connect with others. I have friends at work that play it now, and it’s brought us so much closer! Games like Ghost of Tsushima and Jedi: Fallen Order reminded me why I love single player games as much as I do, and despite the disappointments of some titles I was looking forward to, I’m really happy I got to find new (and old!) favourites through what I got to play this year. 

Seeing a childhood favourite character return into the Star Wars universe. Again, it sounds sappy, but it can mean a lot to see a character you’ve grown up with and loved so much finally come back in a way that revives that little child in you for a few moments 🥺

And finally, all the lovely new friends I’ve had the pleasure to make this year. The lovely people I’ve been able to speak to through this little fandom, the older friends from before Tumblr days that I’ve been able to speak with more due to our timezones finally matching somewhat in these crazy times. 

Thank you, CC, for being such a bright spark throughout my December ☀️ It has honestly been such a joy speaking and getting to know you throughout this month. You’ve asked such incredibly interesting questions, really made me think about things in MDZS in a way I haven’t before and might not have done so otherwise, and you’ve made me laugh and smile along the way. Honestly all I've ever wanted in my life is to marry Lan Xichen, even though I would have to live with the Lan rules he's just... the best, I agree he'd be SUCH a great husband! Xue Yang would probably really kill you if you actually tried to kiss or marry him, I imagine he's cocky and making innuendos and all that but the moment in which things get serious he's just nope-ing out of there. Boy loves his freedom, which is why I absolutely cannot see him in a relationship, not even with XXC - ✨

Let's just say I ESPECIALLY can't see him with XXC because... their "relationship" dynamic in canon is just so unhealthy and terrible that I don't even feel comfortable reading fluffy AUs with them but nvm, no shade at Xuexiao shippers, I got carried off a little😅 We are nearing the end of the year. Therefore, I'd like to make the last couple questions before the Big Reveal focused on the positive aspects of 2020! Soo, what were your favourite books/songs/albums or even your Spotify Wrapped? -✨

Lan Xichen is top tier husband material 👍 We know how caring our Twin Jades are, and we’ve seen what a loving Lan Wangji is like. Xichen’s probably just as loving, but a little more open publicly with his emotions 😊

Ha ha, no I get it. I’m not overly fond of the relationship between Xue Yang and Xiao Xingchen either, buuuut on the other hand I can’t say too much because I understand the appeal to ships of the sort, even if it’s not for me. If it makes people happy though and it’s not hurting anyone, I say ship what you like! I’ll just avoid that sandbox and happily stay in my Xiao Xingchen and Song Lan bubble instead 😊

We’re so close to the big reveal time, CC! Where has this month gone? I’m gunna miss this cultivator event when it’s over 😭, but I’m also super excited to find out who you are! 💖 

I actually don’t use spotify too often unless I’m doing something around the house like cleaning, so my spotify wrapped probably isn’t very interesting (I haven’t even checked it, but I can guarantee it’ll likely be full of Disney songs and mixed 80′s music 😂). I really enjoyed Miley Cyrus’ Plastic Hearts album though, as well as BLACKPINK’s the album. Oh! And didn’t Lady Gaga’s Chromatica come out this year too? I almost forgot about that! When lockdown lifted for a bit on my country I brought a lot of vinyl’s during a long sale period, so I’ve also been enjoying a lot of old, favourite music this year through that, including some of the older Killers albums. With how 2020′s been a lot of my music has been comfort listening, haha!

As for books, again I went through a period of a reading slump at the beginning of the year so I haven’t read as much as I would have liked (I had to change my Goodreads reading challenge half way through the year because there was no way I was meeting my target). I’ve recently gotten my reading mood back through, so fingers crossed I can carry it over into 2021 and read a bunch more than I did this year. I am determined! 😤 Some of my favourites from what I did read however include Michael Crichtons Jurassic Park, Stephen King’s Misery and Timothy Zhan’s Thrawn Ascendancy: Chaos Rising. I wish I could add MDZS to the list too, but I haven’t actually finished reading it yet! 😂

My favourite thing about Samhain is indeed the spiritual energy I mentioned, which to me is not quite as strong on other holidays. However, I like these others too because... I guess it's hard to explain, but it makes me feel more in tune with nature? The wheel of the year is basically the celebrations of equinoxes and solstices, it has three harvest festivals etc. so the main thing for me is that feeling of honouring, feeling and experiencing the nature we come from! -✨

I definitely see your points about LQR, too! I think he's incredibly dutiful, which in my opinion is a similarity to Denethor, they both have a duty towards their people (for LQR it's his nephews, for Denethor the entirety of Gondor). But yes, LQR definitely wants to protect LWJ from... rash decisions, maybe? Seeing how quickly and entirely he falls for WWX, I imagine LQR is scared of him ending up like his father. The rules also play a very important part -✨

I feel like they are some kind of thing that the Lans, especially LQR, hold onto very tightly because a) it's basically their heritage and b) it gives a very clear guide for life. I don't want to say LQR doesn't know to live life without those rules, but he definitely sees them as incredibly important and cannot accept that LWJ is trying to bend them because a) again, they're basically heritage and b) he just wants the best for him, and maybe the rules have made a good life possible for LQR -✨

Christmas was lovely, thanks! I spent it at home with my parents, so we had a rather relaxed Christmas from usual. But we still got to speak to the family over the phone and on video chat, so that was nice. 

How you describe the spiritual energy and being more in tune with and honouring nature sounds really nice, actually! I can imagine that would be a great feeling and way of celebrating and connecting more with it, especially since nature is always there and does so much for us! 🍃 I think that’s such a cool thing to honour and respect. 

You explain my Lan Qiren feelings perfectly! I imagine that a lot of the Lan elders are very much beholden to the tradition of the rules, since to them it’s just the done thing to abide by and they’ve probably not really felt that they’ve led them wrong. There was a photoset I saw earlier today which seemed to sit almost perfectly with what we were talking about, which was this comparison here. To Lan Qiren, his brothers’ downfall was breaking off from the path they all followed and doing what he liked in the name of love, and he was only rewarded with tragedy in the end by doing so. To him, as long as his nephews stick to the path and abide by the rules set by their clan, they won’t suffer in the same way. He wants the best for them, and Lan Qiren truly believes the best is ‘abide by our rules for they won’t steer you wrong’.

And to be honest with you, when he see’s what happens to both Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian when they do fall off the path, Lan Qiren probably feels justified in his belief. To him, the troublesome Wei Wuxian dies for doing his own thing and practicing in the art of an unnatural cultivation, and Lan Wangji suffers through both a) the grief of loosing him and b) the punishment he receives through the effort of defending and protecting him. He doesn’t want to punish his nephew, but then again Lan Wangji wouldn’t have ended up in such a situation if he had just followed the path that the rest of them do. 

Of course, we as the reader/viewer know that Lan Wangji is right in questioning what he’s always known and that Wei Wuxian has changed his views for the better by allowing him to see that the world isn’t black and white but rather different shades of grey, but Lan Qiren doesn’t know that. His view is different, and all he sees is his youngest nephew being led astray by the troublesome boy from his childhood. If the rules of tradition have never steered Lan Qiren wrong, why would he not have faith that they would always guide his nephews in the right direction? 

Oooh, Kiss, Marry, Kills are always fun! Let’s see:

1. Wei Wuxian - Jiang Cheng - Jiang Yanli

😧 You want me to kill one of the Yunmeng trio? That is cruel! 😭

I’d kiss Wei Wuxian - because I think if I even thought about marrying him I’d have Lan Wangji on my case and nope. I’m not risking death by cold stare 😂. Probably marry Jiang Yanli, because she is an absolute sweetheart and I cannot, will not hurt her. And I am so sorry my angry purple berry, but I think I’d end up killing Jiang Cheng just because he’d be so stubborn and angry over something we’d be arguing about and I would have enough™

2. Lan Jingyi - Jin Ling - Lan Sizhui 

I’d kiss Sizhui (wow that’s weird after saying I’d kiss Wei Wuxian but there is no way I am killing the best son). Marry Jingyi, because I reckon that would be hilarious and a marriage where there is always entertainment (plus we could both be the most un-Lan Lan’s together that way 😂 ). Once again, I am so sorry golden boy, but I guess I’m killing Jin Ling here. 

3. Nie Huaisang - Nie Mingjue - Lan Xichen

I’d kiss Nie Huaisang. Marry Lan Xichen - he’d be such a good husband! 😍 Plus I think he needs some happiness in his life after all the death and betrayal that’s happened. Sorry Mingjue, guess you’re staying dead in this scenario too. 

 4. Xue Yang - Song Lan - Xiao Xingchen

Kiss Song Lan. Marry Xiao Xingchen. And kill the murder boy Xue Yang. You’re an interesting character Xue Yang, but I gotta protect the boys. Plus I’m sorry, if I even tried to kiss or marry him he’d probably just stab me with a dagger or sword he has hidden somewhere on his person. Boy’s a menace 🗡️

I did take the patronus quiz, but I can't remember for the life of me what the result was😂 I think it's really nice that your parents like energetic people, I couldn't even tell what kind of people my parents like haha - on one side, they probably wouldn't like somebody as... stiff as LWJ but WWX might be TOO energetic, though I believe they would prefer him over LWJ. Most of all they might like JGY actually (if he's not being outright murderous ofc). Anyways, WWX lovers tend to dislike JZX -✨

And honestly, I love the thought of WWX being a computer geek/good at computers, it really fits his inventive character! Also!! Your dad sounds pretty cool with fictional characters, my parents always look at me weirdly and tell me to "live in reality" when I have strong feelings on them😅 but!! Imo Denethor is one of the most complex and the best characters in LotR, of course he's really a dick but I tend to differentiate between characters I love and characters I find interesting -✨

Personally, I'm pagan so I celebrate the Wiccan holidays even though I am not Wiccan. I think they're actually Celtic holidays but I'm not too sure about that... My favourite night of the year is Samhain/Halloween, I used to love Christmas so much but with the years the festive spirit got... less and less. On Samhain I always feel the spiritual energy, though, that's why I love it so much! -✨

I was talking of Denethor earlier, and since he's a kinda asshole guy hindering one of the best things I was wondering what you thought of LQR! I feel like many people dislike him because he dislikes WWX, a fan favourite, similarly to Denethor and Faramir. And do you see any parallels between LQR and Denethor? I never thought about whether I see any, but this came to my mind spontaneously😅 -✨

Ha, no that’s fair! I think I only really remember that my patronus was a dolphin since they’re one of my favourite animals, so I was really excited about it at the time. If I took it again it would probably change though, those quizzes usually always do 😂

I think my Dad’s cool with fictional characters because he’s a big fanboy himself with his own favourites, honestly. My Mum’s just happy to see people having interests in fictional worlds and characters, especially with how happy my Dad gets with his own interests. I grew up on local trips to conventions and things of the like, so it’s no wonder my interests and love of fandom is the way it is 😊 It was probably their influence!

Oh, cool! I don’t know too much about Wiccan holiday and tradition personally, but I know a few people that lean towards the traditions themselves. Just out of interest, what do you enjoy the most out of celebrating holidays like Halloween? You mention that you love the feel of the spiritual energy, what other things about the holidays do you enjoy? I hope you don’t mind me asking, I’m just curious and would love to know more! 😊

Oddly enough, I don’t have many feelings about Lan Qiren. He’s a character that I neither like nor dislike (well. Maybe a little bit of dislike when Lan Wangji was punished. But not like, out right ‘this character is on the evil list now 😠’). I think the thing people forget is that Lan Qiren has a right to his fear for and protect over his nephews? Whether those feelings are wrong or right are another question - but from his point of view he’s already seen what loving too much can do and how it can ruin a person through what it did to his brother and how it left him with Wangji and Xichen to raise. I think he also sees Lan Wangji’s feelings for Wei Wuxian and worries that history is repeating itself (especially since we know Lans don’t really have a good track record with love). 

Given his history of knowing Cangse Sanren as well and the fact that Wei Wuxian seems to mirror his mother a lot, I can imagine that he knows well enough that Wei Wuxian is like fire and smoke. He’s wild and untameable (pun not intended), and not something you can catch and just hide away. I think there’s frustration there for his own past and whatever relationship he had with Cangse Sanren, and the fear of how wild Wei Wuxian is and how taken his youngest nephew quickly becomes for him. I don’t think Lan Qiren really knows what to do in certain situations either, especially since he ties himself so tightly to the clan rules that they restrain him. Unlike the Twin Jades he’s not really struggling against the rules and attempting to bend and question them, but I think there are a few instances where he’s like ‘rules are rules - even if I don’t want to do this, I have to’.

As for parallels between him and Denethor ... it has been a very long time since I read Lord of the Rings, so a lot of what I remember of the character these days comes from the films. There’s nothing that really springs directly to my mind? It’s not a connection I’ve ever really thought about honestly, but if you had any thoughts about it I’d be interested to know! 😊

I'm very happy that you like the office!AU, it's quickly become one of my favourites! I absolutely agree with you in preferring WWX's CQL death, to me it is somehow comforting that his last action was, in fact, one that he had control over. His loss of control in MDZS is incredibly devastating to me, I honestly can't even describe what it does to me :') The fic I found was take him (save him) by an anonymous writer on AO3, fair warning it's a dead dove kink fic but his condition is... woah -✨

It also very much hurts me how much LWJ loved WWX, and it must have been so terrible for him to just... let go, but he loved him enough to do it and ahhh honestly these two are probably the most tragic, well written relationship I know of. But crossing over to less heartbreaking matters, today's question I have for you is what sect could you see yourself in? And which one couldn't you ever live in? This is kind of like the Hogwarts houses question just better imo😂 -✨

Oh gosh I absolutely agree. Wei Wuxian’s death in either adaption is sad enough as is, but at least in the drama it’s more controlled for him. The novel is just ... I found it brutal. I also just like in general that Lan Wangji doesn’t just ... hear about it later like he does in the novel. It’s devastating for him enough to know the man he loves died, but during one of the rare times he’s not there to try and protect him and while he’s so injured from his punishment for helping Wei Wuxian? Ouch. 

Thank you for telling me the fic title! I think I have seen that fic floating around after searching it up! I hadn’t read it yet because I think I was wary with the tags. Although I gotta say, I had a moment just now where I misread the notes and thought they said ‘The Handmaiden’s Tale’ rather than just ‘The Handmaiden’ and just went ‘... huh. I didn’t expect the Handmaiden’s Tale to end like that’ 😂 Was very confused for a second until I realised my mistake!

Ooh yay sect talk! 

As much as I would absolutely love to, I very much don’t think I could be in the Gusu Lan sect 😔 I’d probably end up breaking the rules left right and centre without realising it, and although I do prefer having a schedule to my day I doubt I could do the ‘wake at five, sleep at nine’ routine. Musical cultivation? I would love that. The aesthetic in general? So beautiful! The (generally) calm manner of most in the sect? Sounds very peaceful to me! But I also love animals too much and would just want to adopt so many as pets. 

I’d probably fit in nicely in the Yunmeng sect, honestly. Lotus Pier seems like a beautiful place to grow up and live in, and it seems a bit more relaxed. Of course there’s still hard work to do there, but to end the day on a boat on the lake? Sounds pretty good to me. Purple is a nice colour to wear too, and pets are allowed! Plus I like that the sect motto is ‘attempt the impossible’.

The Jin sect seems a bit too excessive to me, but that’s likely just due to those in charge of running the sect throughout the story. With someone like Jin Ling in control it probably get’s a lot better, but it’s not for me. And I do like the Nie sect too, but the whole ‘dying of qi deviation’ is a bit of a negative 😂

Ahh WWX being happy just gives me lots of feels! Speaking of feels, I personally haven't read the novel except for bits and pieces but I recently learned that WWX's death there was different to what was presented in the series and I don't know which one breaks me more! Like, is it him throwing himself off the cliff in front of LWJ or is it him being ripped apart by the resentful energy he HAD to utilize because he couldn't use a different cultivation method anymore?? -✨

Overall, the "control" theme that plays a huge part in demonic cultivation is what really gets me. This is personal now, but to me there are few things scarier than losing control. Plus, I recently found a very dark, angsty fic about LWJ bringing WWX back to the Burial Mounds where WWX is incredibly far gone already and basically insane, and just the thought of it really messed with me. What do you think of this? Which version of his death is more interesting for you, which one sadder? -✨

Wei Wuxian’s happiness makes me happy 😊 The boy has been through enough, he deserves to live in happy AU’s where his biggest concern is his feelings over Lan Wangji.

Oof, that is a question. I actually had to have a think about my response for a little bit, because although I have my preferences over which I prefer, I haven’t actually thought too much into why that is.

You’re absolutely right on the theme of control. In both versions of MDZS control is present - and it’s all about the unpredictability of a cultivation method that is so feared and misunderstood / unknown to the larger majority of the cultivation world. Wei Wuxian is constantly saying he can control it, but can he really? Even he doesn’t really understand the extent of what he’s utilising. 

I personally prefer the drama version of Wei Wuxian’s death. It’s the first one I was made aware of and until I learnt differently, I just assumed the novel followed the same pattern. My first instinct when I read what happened to him in the novel was to recoil and go ‘don’t like that’ to him being torn apart. I’m still not fond on it, but I get it in terms of the story.

I like the drama version more though because, even though Wei Wuxian’s death is really a suicide in it, his control over his fate was never taken from him. He honestly believed at that point in the story that he had nothing left to live for - his sister had just died for him, he’d lost the Wens, lost A Yuan. The cultivation world hated him to the point they were ready to murder him ... as far as Wei Wuxian was concerned, he wasn’t leaving Nightless City alive anyway. It was just a matter of how he was going to die. 

Yet although he’d lost everything, although he believed everyone hated him, although he knew he was going to likely die - he took that decision of how he was going to die into his own hands. His last act is his own: one which he has complete control over. He is exhausted and heartbroken, and no longer sees a place for himself in the world anymore. He thinks he brought more harm to those he loved than ever bringing any good, so Wei Wuxian decides no more. 

He decides to let go.

I even believe Lan Wangji understands that it is Wei Wuxian’s choice to die at this point. Although Wei Wuxian shakes free of the grasp he has on him and despite his own injury, Lan Wangji could have reached to grab him again. He doesn’t attempt a second time though, and it’s because - even though the act truly shatters his own heart - Lan Wangji loves Wei Wuxian so much that he even respects the choice he makes. 

I also just really love how the drama has this consistency of mirroring throughout it. Even Wei Wuxian’s death mirrors an episode that happened not long before, where they have the exchange in the rain and Wei Wuxian says things like ‘if there’s a war between me and them, then I’d rather battle to the death with you’ and ‘if I die, at least I will die by your hand. That would be fair.’ These are his choices and his decisions - he’s saying to Lan Wangji that he would welcome death by his hand which is ... oof. That’s a big thing to lay on someone!

That’s what I see from the scene, anyway. The book death is effective in it’s own right, and it’s still sad. But I just prefer the drama one because there’s so much tangled up within it and to me? It hurts more 😢 Especially when I think of this quote from The Song of Achilles which reminds me of Wei Wuxian’s choice here (and how it affects those who continued to live that did still care for him).

“It is right to seek peace for the dead. You and I both know there is no peace for those who live after.”

I totally understand what you mean! Like, the characters can be ‘different’, because in modern AU’s they’re more challenged by situations they never would be put in in the main canon. I actually love when I find fics with Wei Wuxian and Wen Qing as friends in med school / both work in medicine, because while you can see it for Wen Qing from what she does in canon you don’t necessarily see it for Wei Wuxian, but it works! It works so well! There’s so many scenarios like that that are just fun to read or think about 😊

I’m like you in that I haven’t seen Fatal Journey yet - I’m actually hoping to maybe watch it next week, as a little holiday treat to myself. From what I know about it it’s Nie Sect centric, especially focused on Mingjue and Huaisang. It has a lot of character growth on Huaisang’s part that’s otherwise more offscreen in the main series (since we follow Wei Wuxian’s story there). I think it also helps to explain a bit more about what happened with Mingjue and how Huaisang became the ultimate plotting mastermind. The fact it’s Huaisang centric is what really interests me, since after watching the show I wanted more of him.

Oh yes, JC and WWX are a very well written sibling relationship, just like all the others! Each one is different, and that's what makes them unique, I don't think I've ever seen a series with such well written, and well developing, relationships! Even though it is very heartbreaking, indeed, and I'm still sad that JC and WWX didn't get to reconcile in the end... although that was plausible. "What am I supposed to do? Say thank you, and then sorry?" sums it up p well -✨

as JC cannot change the past anymore, he now knows that WWX was not the one mainly responsible for all the terrible things but after all that happened I understand that there is no reconciliation, even though it does break my heart. The friendships between WN and WWX/NHS and WWX are some of my favourites as well! Especially NHS and WWX, they're just so innocent in the beginning and seeing how time changes them is very interesting. My fav sibling dynamic to explore is NHS and NMJ, though! -✨

It's very interesting how different they are, and obviously NHS loved NMJ a great deal, while NMJ was rather strict to him... I'm also not ashamed of saying I love modern AUs where they're best bros. One of my favourite modern AU things, though, is platonic 3zun and WWX/NHS//JYL/JZX all coexisting and 3zun being excited brothers about everything. Now, do you enjoy reading modern AUs? Ugh, the variation and depth to all the sibling and friend relationships in MDZS are just 👏 so 👏 good! It really makes it difficult to pick favourites sometimes, doesn’t it? I adore Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng and knew from the get go they were my favourite siblings, but then you have their interactions with Yanli too who is, best older sister right there alongside Wen Qing. I have a bit of a weakness for well written sibling bonds, so finding so many in the series without expecting it? Honestly, it just made me love the series all the more 💖

I absolutely agree with you! Half the heartache of Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng’s lack of reconciliation is just ... where do you even begin, really? All either of them ever wanted to do was protect the other, and look what happened. There’s a lot of anger and resentment (on Jiang Cheng’s part at least) there, but also a lot of yearning and sadness. Because they love each other so dearly and both want to be brothers again, but they’re older now and know that sometimes, you just can’t return to the way things were 💔

I actually sort of see the end of the drama as rather hopeful for their relationship, though. Because the important thing (at least on Wei Wuxian’s part) has been talked about, and even if Jiang Cheng is still struggling with the golden core reveal, it’s the step forward they needed. Jin Ling knows the two of them want to talk and sort things out but are too stubborn to do so ... but I wouldn’t be surprised if Jin Ling ends up bringing them together somehow. He is, after all, their sisters’ son for all he seems to mirror Jiang Cheng. Jin Ling has her caring side and the stubborn side to likely lock them in a room together until they talked things through 😂

The Nie brothers are so interesting! They care so much (enough that Nie Huaisang came up with the ultimate revenge plan. Honestly, what a king 👑). Have you had a chance to watch Fatal Journey with them at all? It’s high up on my to watch list, and it looks so intriguing! To be honest I think Huaisang is just an incredible character anyway. His brother is a little strict, yes, but it feels like tough love to me. Mingjue knows what Huaisang is really capable of and what potential he has, even with the facade Huaisang puts up for the rest of the world. 

Oh, I love reading modern AU’s 😍 Since we’ve shared fic recs before CC, here are a few good ones I’ve read recently: Martial Claims by yeolinski, I’ll have you and you’ll have me by sundiscus and These Things Stay the Same by notevenyou.

As for tropes ... oh, wow. It sort of depends on the pairing and the story. I’ve read a lot of fic set in settings that I never thought I’d like half as much as I do, and a lot of the time it’s down to how good the writing is! As clique as it sounds, I do enjoy a good coffee shop or college au from time to time. But I also really enjoy things like ‘meeting in a bookstore’ or ‘flowershop au’s’. I think my favourite tropes are sort of getting together, mutual pining, miscommunication and a lot of fluff and comfort smut is always welcome too, but sometimes it’s not necessary if the story doesn’t feel it needs it, you know? 

At the moment, I have found that I am yearning for a good ice skating!wangxian fic. I think that’s due to a mix of me thinking it would be perfect for them, watching this ice skating performance too many times for it to be regarded as healthy, desperately missing watching ice skating on the telly, the announcement for more Yuri on Ice a while back, and it just being winter time 😅 (Plus like ... wangxian ice skating to songs Lan Wangji writes and creates for Wei Wuxian them? Perfect!)

I have found that for wangxian (since that’s the Untamed ship I read the most) that I prefer modern AU’s for the getting together, and canon more for established relationships / exploring already existing character connections. Not saying it doesn’t switch out between the two ever, but I just seem to gravitate to that more. 

I know you mentioned before you often write darker fic, but do you have any specific tropes you enjoy reading or writing more than others?

Oh! And while I remember and we’re on the topic of fic, if you enjoy the Nie brothers, I also recommend the fic The Light that Fails to Dim by glowingreverie. It includes a Wei Wuxian that is found and adopted by the Nie sect, Nie brothers (there are three of them with Wei Ying included!), Wei Wuxian still having connections to the Jiang clang, and is honestly just such an unusual yet interesting take on things that I think you’d really enjoy it! 💖

Before sending you this ask, I actually never thought about what might have happened if JZX had lived, but your concepts are incredibly interesting! Personally I think that it might have looked like a happy ending, with WWX arriving at the celebration and reuniting with JYL, but I suspect that after that it wouldn't have gone much different to canon, especially since he cannot reveal the golden core things and... he's still a demonic cultivator, after all, and the other sects don't like that -✨

Yes, that’s exactly it! I think Wei Wuxian would have likely made it to see his sister and new nephew, as well as Jiang Cheng and Lan Wangji. He probably would have even had a day or two of peaceful reunion with them all too (although likely with an edge of tension from some of the Jin clan that didn’t know or trust him). But then Jin Guangshan would have started pressuring him about his cultivation technique and the location of the Yin Iron, and knowing the tensions that were around at the time it would have probably escalated into disaster. Something would have happened at least, since there was so much distrust around Wei Wuxian even though his efforts were critical in winning the war for the cultivation world 😒 There were too many that were power hungry and working for their own gains behind the scenes. 

Aww thank you! 💖 I sometimes worry I talk or overthink about these sort of scenarios, but then I remember that it also helps with creativity related things! I gotta tell ya CC, ever since replying to your last message and talking about Wei Wuxian following Baoshan Sanren’s lead and younger cultivators learning from him and wearing little red ribbons in their hair as a nod to him, I’ve really been toying with ideas of an older Wen Yuan who got to study under Wei Wuxian in a scenario where Wei Wuxian didn’t die. I think it’d be cute, and there’s nothing to say Lan Wangji didn’t still help in his upbringing secretly too in such a scenario!

Two of Wei Wuxian’s biggest weaknesses are both his self worth and the fact he hides so much of himself from even those that love him unconditionally, which if he did still die would be the biggest reason why. I actually also wonder if, in such a scenario where his health was degrading drastically, Wen Ning would still interfere like he does in canon and just tell Lan Wangji or the Jiang’s what’s really going on with him. I think Wen Qing would want to but also begrudgingly respect Wei Wuxian’s decision (as much as she would still argue with him to just talk to them), but Wen Ning seems the most likely to just be like ‘nah, I’m not watching you die. Especially not because you’ve been killing yourself by protecting us. We’re fixing this even if you hate me later for sharing this secret’ 🤷‍♂️

Favourite platonic and favourite sibling relationships! Ooh, another good question!

I love a lot of the sibling relationships, but my absolute favourite is Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian. I just want reconciliation between them, is that too much to ask for, MDZS? 🥺 I absolutely adore how much they love one another, even if they struggle to show it most of the time (especially in Jiang Cheng’s case!). Second and third places for favourite sibling relationships are Lan Wangji and Lan Xichen, and Nie Huaisang and Nie Mingjue (I still need to watch the spinoff movie for more Nie sibling action ... and tears).

For platonic relationships, I want to say it’s a joint first place between Wei Wuxian and Nie Huaisang, and Wei Wuxian and the Wen siblings. Wei Wuxian and Wen Ning especially have such a great friendship, especially when Wei Wuxian was worried Wen Ning needed more friendships and to find happiness for himself. Wen Ning is just, a good boy, in every sense of the word. He deserves all the good things! And I just have a lot of feelings about Nie Huaisang silently missing Wei Wuxian himself during the years he’d been dead, up until the point he and Mo Xuanyu decided to summon him back to help.
