Today in the Department of Before They Were Star Trek Stars, DeForest Kelley guest stars in "Death in the Forest," episode 39 of the third season of The Lone Ranger (original air date June 4, 1953).

Kelley plays a gruff country doctor (typecasting!). When his patient, who overheard a plot to assassinate the territorial governor, is mysteriously killed, he believes the Lone Ranger is the killer and part of the conspiracy. His friend the sheriff deputizes him to join the manhunt.

This would be De's last appearance on The Lone Ranger, and it occurred during the season when star Clayton Moore was let go during a contract dispute and replaced by John Hart. Producers thought the audience wouldn't know or care what actor was behind the mask, but they thought wrong. Nobody likes a scab, and by the end of the season (can you imagine a thirty-nine-episode season today?) they figured the salary increase Moore was asking for didn't stack up against potential lost revenue from their big money-making hit becoming a flop. He returned the following season, and stayed in the role until the famous court case of 1979.
