Polemos Trentius, youngest son of Thanatos and Drevina Trentius. Together with his older brother Cassius, the two enrolled in the Scholars Guild's mystical education programs, and both excelled, slowly but surely rising through the organization's more professional ranks, by merit and deed; no nepotistic hand guiding their paths to success.

While Cassius would eventually depart, and find a permanent residence in the court of Dawnview, Polemos would remain in Bezstrachu, as he was selected as the keeper of the family's secret vault, hidden in a mausoleum in the great city's cemetery.

As keeper, he found himself in a unique position, and used it to his advantage; drumming up a side business of "Good Faith Usury" - using the funds within the family vault to lend sparingly to promising upstarts, to be repaid with a respectable but not unreasonable interest; and for those that could not repay, he would get his pound of flesh some other way...

Beyond magic and money-lending, Polemos is something of an expert duelist, taking much after his father, both in his sinistral grip, and more elegant forms alike, preferring the usage of a custom-forged saber, over the simple, and anemic daggers, preferred by his spellcasting peers.

The Counties of Serce

PREFACE: After the founding of the Empire, and resulting unification of the formerly-fractured Heartland Territories, the recently-named Serce was subsequently divided into the Six Counties - Dawnview, Duskwatch, Dimslough, Everwatch, Cardell, and Bezstrachu.

DUSKWATCH

Taking up the northwestern fifth of Serce, Duskwatch County makes up one half of the Grand Forest region, a large swath of boreal forest, that makes up the entire northern third of the nation. The landscape of Duskwatch is notoriously riddled with hills and valleys, making infrastructure difficult to properly erect. Indeed, Duskwatch is the most sparsely populated County in Serce. The capital city of Duskwatch itself is roughly a few miles southeast of the border between Serce and Siega. Due to its proximity to Siega, the climate of Duskwatch can be rather cold for most of the year, though not so bad as to stifle out the growth of crops, in most populated regions. By and large, the people of Duskwatch are lower-middle class, with very few if any outside of the County Hall living in excess; though even fewer are in explicit poverty. Communities are tightly knit, and family and loyalty are important. Largest economic contributions are hides, leather, and root vegetables.

DAWNVIEW

The second of the "Twin Counties", Dawnview makes up the eastern half of the Grand Forest region, though unlike Duskwatch, the makeup of Dawnview's natural landscape is more subdued, with far less extreme variations in height and depth, allowing for far greater ease of construction and development. Indeed, Dawnview is the second most populated County in Serce, behind only Bezstrachu itself. Due to a closer proximity to the volcanic hellscape of Zapomnienia, Dawnview has a greater Gleboki population AND a slightly warmer climate compared do Duskwatch.

While Bezstrachu may be considered the "brain" of the Empire, Dawnview is considered by many to be its "heart", on account of its economic contributions, and its vast cultural richness. In particular, the county capital is host to no less than three open marketplaces, where independent merchants and representatives of larger businesses are able to set up and engage with the population.

Some such merchants make a permanent home of Dawnview, while others simply come and go as needed; with those that stay helping to fuel Dawnview's widening diversity and richness of culture. In the southwest of Dawnview County, near the three way border between itself, Duskwatch, and Bezstrachu, there is a small township named Newheart Hill, built around the Roebuck Abbey. The monks of the Abbey are absolutely stunning vintners, who specialize in stronger than normal blackberry-cherry wines. The notoriety of the Abbey's wine is so high, that it is a bit of an in-joke across the county, that the only reason Newheart Hill hasn't completely taken over the economy, is because everybody is too overindulged on the wine already

DIMSLOUGH

A wedge of territory due west of Bezstrachu, and ascending up the coastline, Dimslough County terminates just before the natural borders of the Grand Forest region, its own natural makeup being sloping hills with sparse tree growth, giving way to swathes of marshland, near County Cardell's own northern border. The lack of sufficiently workable land has stunted Dimslough's economic viability, and most of what is grown for crops, is kept for domestic or personal use. The largest successes that Dimslough has compared to other parts of the Empire, is the nature of the capital as a port town, paving the way for coastal trade and fishing. Indeed, in the first and second ages, Dimslough was one of the most popular ports for vessels from further north in Siega to stop at; a much more convenient process than sailing all the way south, and east, toward the lower coasts of Ladowanie.

The people of Dimslough are largely married to their work; bakers, carpenters, masons, and brewers alike. Simple and humble folk, who work hard for everything they earn.

CARDELL

Taking up the southwestern-most segment of Serce's territory, County Cardell takes up the land south of the border marshlands from Dimslough's south, all down and along the coast, curving to the south, and terminating near the natural border of the rolling hills of Everwatch County. Cardell is made up largely of wide open plains, interrupted only by shallow riverways and vast lakes. Considerable portions of Cardell's townships and villages are built adjacent to the lakes and rivers, from the smallest fishing communities, all the way up to the capital of Cardell - which itself was built overtop of the ruins of the Half-Elves' sole colony.

For export, Cardell makes good use of its warmer climate, for the growing of various tender fruits and cultivated berries, for the sake of the brewing and distillation of many wines, liqueurs, and brandies. Such products are among the most popular of their kind, across most of Cierpienie itself.

The population of Cardell is fairly well-off, and there is a considerably higher concentration of scholars and mystics among their population, than most other counties in Serce, beaten out only by Bezstrachu proper. In history, County Cardell found itself besieged by an invading force from the island of Samotny, located only a few miles off of the southwestern coast. The Empire pushed back this invading force so severely, that the would-be conquerors became staunch isolationists; with the only vessels ever coming from Samotny to Cierpienie, being small ships bearing refugees and political dissidents.

As such, Cardell is host to many refugee camps along its coast, and the county itself has the highest populations of Xalrathi and Flesh Wraiths on the entire continent.

EVERWATCH

So named for the founding site of Fort Everwatch; a pre-Imperial compound, that was designed as a border watch post, to protect it's former master's territory in the Heartlands' southeast, from any potential invaders from Ladowanie. A paranoid purpose, that would later serve as the framework for one of the Empire's most abundantly-populated military presences across the continent. The hills of Everwatch are rich in ore and minerals, and mines have been carved into the earth for longer than the Empire itself has existed. Abundant deposits of iron, copper, tin, zinc, gold, silver, sulfur, lead, aluminum, and various types of gemstones. Everwatch's mining industry is the largest on the continent, with the long-standing Heartland Ironworks company supplying both the Empire, vassal states, and civilian markets, with over half of the continent's market iron, with smaller companies and mining operations supplying far less - or simply different materials altogether. The Cardius Mountains to the eastern coast of Everwatch peer over the County, and cause cooler winds to blow over most of the land in their wake, making for less reliable crop growth, due to the unpredictable weather changes that can result from these winds.

The people of Everwatch are some of the most spiritually-devout in the Empire, with many of the long-standing religious sects in the nation, able to trace their roots to some community or shrine site in the County. The Order of the Myoki in particular, got their start as an ofshoot of the common Imperial Faith, worshipping the Creator-God, Vendellius; though came to take on a more active role in the community. The Myoki are largely wanderers and healers, but some higher-ranking Clerics make roots in cities, for the sake of "serving" the local community. Making no open fact of their deeper nature as vampire hunters. Healing the world, one tragic, needless death, at a time...

The most crop growth in Everwatch, is produced in the warmer southwest near the border with Cardell, With many grain crops, alliums, and greens being grown for local use and export alike. Companies and farms in Everwatch are the producers of roughly a quarter of the continent's entire wheat flour stock.

BEZSTRACHU

Named after the "City Without Fear", Bezstrachu is a centralized county that holds territory in every natural region of Serce, not counting the marshlands. The population of Bezstrachu is fairly centralized, with most of the population living within the vast, walled city proper, and those that live outside of the city, spread out around the county, are farmers and hunters.

Bezstrachu Capital, is the largest city in Serce, and second largest on Cierpienie itself. Home to both the Imperial Palace and the primary Scholars Guild compound, Bezstrachu is of considerable cultural significance. Outside the capital, there exist many different warehouses, shipping depots, and military garrisons - all for the purpose of receiving, processing, distributing, and protecting assets for purchase, sale, and barter. By and large, Bezstrachu is the safest County to travel through, thanks in no small part to the constant military presence, making even the smallest of highway robberies a statistical improbability.
