Terminado o corpo do gorro, comecei a pensar em como ia fazer as orelheiras. Tinha arranjado em Portugal um pdf do livro "Andean Folk Knitting", da Cynthia Gravelle LeCount, que foi aonde fui buscar a inspiração.

Once I finished the body of the hat, I began to think about how I was going to do the earflaps. While I was in Portugal, I'd found a pdf of "Andean Folk Knitting" by Cynthia Gravelle LeCount, which is where I got my inspiration from.

Optei por este estilo, feito todo em manta de gato. Faz-se uma tira com modulação a carreiras incompletas no meio para dobrar ou curvar e depois remalha-se a borda de dentro e vai-se tricotanto e aproximando os lados ao meio com minguados.

I opted for this style, all done in garter stitch. You do a strip with short row shaping in the middle so it bends or curves at that point, then you pick up stitches along the inner edge and you just knit while gradually drawing the sides closer with decreases.

Gostei muito do resultado e fiz logo o par, mas ficaram demasiado grandes infelizmente. Então agora estou a experimentar com uma orelheira um pouco diferente.

I really liked the result and made the pair right away, but they came out too big unfortunately. So now I'm trying out a slightly different earflap.

Já tentei costurar a orelheira nova ao gorro e parece que a curva que faz em cima vai ter de ser corrigida porque deforma o gorro. Também fiz um crochezinho na ourela para não enrolar e coloquei uma borla na ponta do gorro, mas não sei se vou deixar assim, aparar um pouco mais ou fazer outra com menos fio.

I've tried sewing the new earflap on to the hat and it's looking like I'm going to have to correct the curve it makes at the top because it warps the hat. I've also added a little crochet border to the the brim so it doesn't curl and a tassel to the point of the hat, but I don't know if I'm leaving it as it is, trimming it a little shorter or making another with less yarn.

This is the Buddy for today, August 27th. It's a Sunday.

This Buddy is surrounded by some other people, because I felt like drawing different characters. I kind of like the long horizontal strip with multiple characters, but it was kind of hard to work with it on FireAlpaca, because the file was too big. I think it might be hard to see on tumblr, too, so here's a vertical version of the strip:

Ando a fazer este gorrinho há mês e pouco; comecei no fim de outubro.

I've been working on this hat for a month and a bit; I started it at the end of October.

Os desenhos foram diretamente retirados duma imagem que vi no Pinterest deste gorrinho, mas a estrutura desenhei eu, para se aproximar mais do estilo de gorro em que se inspiraram para criar o modelo, o ch'ullu, tradicional da região dos Andes.

The designs were taken directly from a picture I saw on Pinterest of this hat, but I came up with the actual structure of it so it would be closer to the style of hat which inspired that pattern, the traditional Andean ch'ullu.

Então, copiei os desenhos do gorro e criei um esquema para seguir com as cores que tinha.

So I copied the designs from the hat and made a chart I could follow in the colours I had.

Depois fiz uma amostrinha em jacquard, tirei a medida da circunferência da minha cabeça, fiz os meus cálculos e montei malhas. Decidi fazer sempre na mesma medida até ao final da secção das forminhas encaracoladas.

Then I did a tension square in stranded colourwork, I measured the circumference of my head, did my calculations and casted on. I decided not to do any decreasing until I got to the end of the section with the curly shapes.

Neste projeto, por ter tantas trocas de cor e por ser uma malha relativamente fechadinha, em vez de deixar as pontinhas todas soltas para depois esconder, eu fui-as entretecendo pelas minhas malhas. Um bom bocadinho antes da troca de cor, eu começava a entretecer a(s) nova(s) cor(es): fazia uma malha metendo a nova cor por cima do(s) fio(s) tensionado(s) e na malha seguinte deixava ficar por baixo; e se fosse introduzir duas novas cores, intercalava, ou seja, ia uma por cima e a outra por baixo e depois trocavam e iam ficando torcidas uma em torno da outra. Depois da troca de cor, fazia a mesma coisa para esconder a(s) cor(es) de antes da troca.

In this project, since it has so many colour changes and because it's a relatively tightly knit fabric, instead of leaving my ends loose and sewing them in later, I chose to knit them in as I went along. A good bit before the colour change, I would begin knitting in my new colour(s): I'd knit one stitch with the new colour over the tensioned yarn(s) and on the next stitch I'd leave it underneath; and when I'd introduce two new colours, one would be on top and the other underneath and then they'd switch and this would twist them. After the colour change, I would do the same thing with the colour(s) from before the change.

Enquanto trabalhava nesta primeira secção, já ia pensando em como ia fazer o afunilamento do gorro. Testei várias opções em ponto pequeno e decidi fazer duas reduções de 20%, mas acabei por fazer três – uma de 20% e duas de 30%.

While I worked on this first section, I was already trying to plan out how I would do the decreases to make the hat pointy. I tested different possibilities in miniature scale and decided to do two decrease rounds where I would bring in the circumference by 20%, but I actually ended up doing three rounds – a 20% one and two 30% ones.

Alguns dias após terminar esta secção, fiz uma viagem a Portugal para ir ao casamento da minha prima. Inicialmente não pude trabalhar no gorro porque não tinha trazido agulhas – não queria que mas confiscassem no aeroporto – mas assim que arranjei umas lá peguei logo no tricô de novo.

A few days after finishing this section, I went to Portugal for my cousin's wedding. Initially I wasn't able to work on the hat because I didn't bring any needles – I didn't want them to be confiscated at the airport – but as soon as I got my hands on some there I picked my knitting back up right away.

Fui para a sala fazer tricô e fazer companhia à minha avó, ela com o gatinho a aquecer-lhe os pés; depois fui para o quarto e fiz mais uma secçãozinha. Consegui fazer muito progresso nessa noite só!

I went to the front room to knit and keep my granny company, who had a lovely warm cat at her feet the whole time; then I went to my room and knitted up another little section. I was able to make a lot of progress just on that single evening!

Eu pensava que aqui ia ser o fim da parte em jacquard e ia encerrar o gorro em cima, mas não gostei do resultado e desfiz o final. Quando voltei de Portugal, decidi fazer mais voltas de desenhos até mais pertinho da ponta do gorro.

I thought this was where I would end the stranded part of the hat and I was going to decrease to a point, but I didn't like how that was looking so I undid that bit. When I got back from Portugal, I decided to work some more stranded rounds until I got closer to the point of the hat.

Depois fiz cinco minguados simétricos por volta até ficar com dez pontos e terminei a ponta.

Then I decreased five ways until I got down to ten stitches and finished the top.
