Horror haterating hollerating:

EATING MISS CAMPBELL (2022): Scattershot, self-consciously edgy Troma pastiche/parody of HEATHERS, JAWBREAKER, and GINGER SNAPS, about a sardonic, fourth-wall-breaking Goth British vegan lesbian teen (Lyndsey Craine), whose attraction to her new American English teacher (Lala Barlow) coincides with her discovery of a powerful appetite for human flesh, and with a deranged new high school contest whose winner will receive a handgun and the opportunity to turn it on either their classmates or themselves. One of those comedies that's so determined to offend that the best response is to just roll your eyes, it would probably work better if it were at least a little bit coherent and less cluttered with unfunny private jokes. Nonetheless, Craine's bitchy snark is kind of fun, and the script takes potshots at so many satiric targets that it does occasionally hit one or two. CONTAINS LESBIANS? The protagonist and the titular Miss Campbell are both gay, but note that the double entendre title is meant very literally in both senses. VERDICT: Depending on your tolerance for sophomoric edgelord bullshit and jokes about school shootings, CSA, and teen suicide (not to mention the cannibalism!), you might find this either mildly amusing or the worst thing you've ever seen; fans of the CHUCKY show may appreciate its brand of glib, self-aware ghoulishness.

VENUS (2022): Occasionally creepy but ultimately rather routine horror movie about a nightclub dancer named Lucía (Ester Expósito), who seeks refuge with her estranged sister Rocío (Ángela Cremonte) after stealing a bag of drugs from her employers and ends up acting in loco parentis for her young niece Alba (Inés Fernández) after Rocío unexpectedly flees in terror of an old woman downstairs (Magüi Mira), who Alba says has the power to enter other people's dreams. Allegedly based on the H.P. Lovecraft story "The Dreams in the Witch House" (WEIRD TALES, July 1933), although the resemblance is very slight, the story's gradual segue from gritty drama to horror is interesting, but the disparate pieces never quite gel and the eventual explanation of what's going on is ho-hum. Expósito is very good at this sort of thing, and she has a nice rapport with Fernández — excellent as a little girl who doesn't yet understand when she should be afraid — but the supernatural elements never attain a really Lovecraftian sense of dread, and pale next to grislier but more mundane moments like a memorably gruesome scene where Lucía tries to patch herself up after being stabbed. CONTAINS LESBIANS? No. VERDICT: Not bad of its type, but it could have used more Lovecraft and less ROSEMARY'S BABY.

theory on why max was there before the other campers in season 5!!!!

okay it was probably to replicate the start of the series but idc!!!! i wanna think that david would probably arrive at camp campbell 2 weeks minimum before it actually opens - and therefore max’s parents would just make max get a bus to camp campbell like a week early to get him out the house asap.

they’d probably leave david a voice mail and send max on his way, and then he’d arrive at camp and have to stay in the counsellors cabin with david until he set the tents up (assuming CJ wouldnt get there as early, and if we factor in past years then gwen) so that’d probably be atleast 5 days of max kinda living with david every year.

also i think max has definitely been to camp more times than we’ve seen or atleast just the year prior to the one we see. based on the fact he “misses chucky” in reigny day who was a camper the year before so it makes sense!!! basically i wanna think max’s parents made arrangements with david to get max there the earliest he could possibly be, and david being david (and a people pleaser) obviously didn’t support the idea but was okay with max staying if his parents insisted because yk its max!!!

oh and i don’t think max would be pleased with being sent early at all because it’d probably make him feel outcasted and different (which is how he felt in the first episode of season 5 might i add!!!) but i’m also sure a part of him is okay with the one on one attention he can get for a week or so

comic-con wrap-up ✨

Thursday Did the dexter offsite. Honestly not really worth the hour wait, but the shipping container theming was cool!

After that I said no more offsites or lines. The rest of my trip was exhibit floor and panels. I just didn't even try for any big Hall H panels this year. Too much camping. Other panels were pretty easy to get into if you just show up a bit early. I typically sit through one to three panels to make sure I get in and get a good seat for what I actually want to see. So there's a lot of random stuff in here. But a lot of the random stuff was fun! The Todd McFarlane panel had David Dastmalchian as a surprise guest to talk about a new comic he's writing. I'm like 90% sure David waved at me as I was taking pics of him. I was off to the side, towards the front, with not many other people around and I'll just say it was trippy.

Then I was there for the Teacup panel which I knew nothing about except James Wan was producing so thought it'd be cool to check out. And it was!

Friday

Okay, so I reallllly wanted to get into the Dexter panel so I sat through four (4) random panels for this one. You can kind of see my pics get progressively better as I move up seats between panels lol.

The panels were Snowpiercer, "Brave New Warriors" (basically a random guys panel about action roles), "Collider's Ladies Night" (random ladies panel), and "TV Guide Fan Favorites" (just completely random lol). The TV Guide panel was my fave and a lot of fun. Bruce Campbell is always a riot and idk anything about Percy Jackson but Leah Jeffries was adorable. Oh, also back to the ladies panel... shout-out to Katy O'Brian for being a Sinister fan.

Then the main event was the Dexter: Original Sin panel. I was happy enough just for anything Dexter, but then Michael C. Hall showed up as a surprise guest and made my life. They also showed the intro for the new show and it looks great. Everything I heard just makes me extra hyped for it. And hyped about Michael C. Hall narrating. I'm still working out my feelings on the Dexter: Resurrections announcement, will have to wait and hear more on that one haha.

Saturday

Saturday was my see-random-panels-for-actors-i-like day. Jack Quaid, hollywood's good boy (cbb joke I can't resist), was there for the The Safe Man audio drama.

And then Hamish Linklater was there for a panel for voicing Batman: Caped Crusader. My Hamish feelings are resurfacing after this, he's just such an interesting soul and a joy to listen to. Matt Reeves was also there which I guess is pretty cool!!! (But this panel only got vague references to the wider DC universe.)

Sunday

Sunday was just me finishing walking the rest of the floor I hadn't hit yet. And finishing my game of how much chucky merch can I find.

Thought I'd share this, I met Jamie Campbell Bower at comic con a couple years ago!! And honestly he is such a sweetheart and the funniest!! He put "nice doll" on the autograph because I took my life size Chucky doll there that day! As we know most his in various things like Stranger Things, Harry Potter, Fantastic beasts, Twilight, Mortal instrument movies etc ♥️ his a fantastic actor and has the best personality!!! I'll always have fond memories meeting him!! I also met Joseph Quinn aka Eddie Munson from Stranger Things 4....but Jamie is probably the 1st wizarding world actor I met. Atleast. 😁😊��️✨️✨️
