hello i would like very much to hear about your b&b&b idea👀👀👀 (also i love that lol. b&b&b. you're so right)
Booth x Brennan x Hannah Burley:
OK SO FIRST OFF, Hannah met Booth when he was in deep grief for what he thought he and Brennan had. No matter how smooth he thinks he is, Hannah is smart and he's an open book after a few drinks. She KNEW what she was walking into, even if she didn't know it was specifically Brennan at the start. It would not take much work to figure Brennan was the "not-ex" in question.
SO its possible from the beginning that Hannah is trying to get in good with Brennan and sew a little chaotic good fun into all their lives. Now, Brennan and Booth both do not take a hint well and were oblivious/actively opposed to anything of the sort. Brennan was keeping her connection to Booth very surface level, Booth was actively trying to put a wall between them. Not exactly a lot of flexibility going on there.
BUT when Brennan confesses her feelings to Booth and he immediately tells Hannah, that's the sweet spot where I think some magic could happen. The follow up question Hannah would have would be "So, do you still have feelings for her?" Booth would try to lie, to hedge, to dodge the question, and Hannah the reporter knows when a source is lying. Hannah's not hurt, she's intrigued.
I think we gotta give Hannah full credit as a human being with her own ideas and goals, she's more than just a plot point. She's getting bored of DC, it's more pantsuits and boardrooms than explosions and revolutions. She is really fond of Seeley, and who could help but be intrigued, attracted, fascinated by Temperance. That's the kind of profile piece that gets people Pulitzers. But the more she gets to know Temperance, the more she likes her as an actual person, someone she wants to spend time with, someone she wants... to get to know a little better.
So rather than being upset by Booth's half-admission of lingering feelings, Hannah sees opportunity. The clock is ticking on how much more DC she can stand, why not bring something new to the table while time is left? I wouldn't be surprised at all if Temperance had drunkenly and/or bluntly already asked Hannah if she had intercourse with other women, and confessed the interest herself. There'd be no resistance to the idea of hooking up there.
The problem is Booth
Of course Booth had thought about the concept of threesomes when it was just him and his right hand in his bunk. It's hot, obviously. But he's a one-girl-at-a-time type guy. He's not one for random hookups, either. You can't make love to a stranger, right? So what's the point otherwise? So his rationale goes.
Hannah is the one who first suggests the idea. He laughs her off, thinking its a joke. She just raises her eyebrows at him. He goes bright red and then very pale. The way Hannah so casually talks through some practicalities, things they could do, makes him go completely blank. It's almost an out of body experience. He mutters some nothing to get out of the conversation and spends the next day hiding in his office from both Hannah and Brennan. Unfortunate side effect: when he next sees Brennan, he can't get a single coherent sentence out of his mouth. She assumes he's still upset at her and isnt going to let it go. She doesn't know he's clinging to his St Christopher medal for dear life and trying so hard not do something embarrassing.
I don't know exactly how they get there, but it all works out. Their first time is Brennan and Hannah having fun while he watches, until Hannah invites him to come join in. She gets the pleasure of playing sexy matchmaker and joining in that intensity. Booth takes it all too serious but between Hannah and Brennan, it ends in laughter.
When Hannah decides its finally time to leave DC, she at least knows she's leave the pair of them in a good place. Over the years, every time Hannah's back in town (eventually "Aunt Hannah!"), they are delighted to host her, catch up, relive old times, etc.

Sometimes its common that some films comes out without my knowledge, particularly non-Hollywood English language films. This British film was about a wealthy couple from the New York, especially the husband who tries his best to fulfill his seriously ill wife’s dream to be an opera singer. The problem is she’s not any good. Not just him, but everybody who is close to them and once laughed at her, try to understand them and give their support. But not all the occasion seems to remain the same. So on one such a big event, the disaster strikes and how it affects the couple is the rest of the tale to disclose. A very surprising film. I thought it was just a comedy like it brings small smiles on our face, but I laughed out loud on many occasions. This is definitely a right time, because I felt like it was a music and cinematic version of the American presidential candidate Don Trump. Yep, there not much difference, but still this ...

Devastated || 7. Suspicion
Paring: (Christopher "Sully" Sullivan x Original Female Character Mance!)
Word Count: 1944
Warnings: slight language, mentions death
Last: Honestly | Next: Preposition
Tumblr media
Danny and Henry go to start the generator while Shea, Trish, and Katherine go to the kitchen. "I say we go to get a boat and get the hell out of here." Sully tells the others.
"I'm in." Chloe jumps up.
"I don't feel bad if something happens to you guys. You deserve it." Jennifer tells them as they start to leave.
"Jennifer," Sully sighs.
"Fuck you." She flips him off.
After Danny and Henry successfully jump-start the Inn's generator, they were confused to see Jennifer alone, "They left while Shea, Trish, and Katherine are in the kitchen." She tells them.
Henry goes to the Marina to stop everyone from leaving, and he tells Danny to shoot anyone he doesn't recognize while he stays with the girls.
"You okay?" Danny asks Jennifer.
"Of course not. And I'm pissed off at the others. How could you live with the fact that you could be responsible for killing a little girl? Sully gets mad at Malcolm for leaving Booth, but he leaves Madison to die."
"He's scared." Danny sighs.
"We're all scared. Do you think the person Cal found in the furnace could be Malcolm?" She asks him.
"Do you think that?"
"He's missing, and I'm 100% sure he didn't run off with the money. He felt terrible after coming clean. He probably wanted to get rid of the money. What better way than burning it?" Jennifer tells him what she thinks.
"That is a possibility." He agrees with her, thinking about what if she was right.
After an hour, Sully and Beth come back, "You were willing to let my daughter die. Anyone leaves the island, Madison dies! That's what we were told. And you tried to leave." Shea yells at Sully.
"We came back, all right? It doesn't matter."
"You don't know that! Nobody knows anything!" She yells at him more.
"Where's Henry?" Trish asks.
"We found JD. He's been killed." Sully tells her.
"Well, I-I thought he was in jail." Danny speaks up.
"He was at the Marina. Henry's taken his body to the clinic with everyone else."
"So if somebody killed JD, then does that mean he didn't kill my dad?" Trish asked as tires were screeching and loud music was playing outside.
"What the hell?" Danny asks.
"That's fucking Shane." Jennifer rushes to go out.
"Jennifer!" Sully yells for her, so he and Danny rush to go outside with her.
They watch her open the truck to see no one, so she turns off the truck just for Shane to point his gun at them.
"Put your gun down." She tells him.
"Tell your friend to drop his, or I'll have to wash him off my truck." He tells her, so Sully looks at Danny to put his down.
"What do you want?" Jennifer sighs, "Because now isn't the time with everything going on."
"I'm looking for JD."
"JD's dead, Shane." She tells him.
"Don't lie to me. I saw him escape from jail earlier today."
"Well, he would have been better off if he'd stayed cause someone sliced him open down a the Marina." Sully tells him.
"It's true. JD's dead. We shouldn't be out here, man." Danny speaks up, so Shane wants their guns.
"Are you kidding me, Shane? We need protection." Jennifer huffs.
"Give me your gun." He tells Danny, so he cooperates. "Go." He motions for them to go as he points his gun at them.
"Fucking ridiculous." Jennifer takes the lead.
"It's okay." Sully tells the others as they walk in.
"Shut up. It's not okay. Well, well. All right. Everybody move to this side of the room right now." Shane tells everyone.
"Shane put down the gun." Trish tells him.
"Well, you didn't say the magic word." Shane says as a gun cocks.
"Please." Henry puts his gun to the back of Shane's head, so Sully and Danny take the guns back.
Henry says the state police will be there tomorrow, so Shea says they need a plan to find Madison, but they had to wait to be safe.
"You still mad at me?" Sully asks, standing alone with Jennifer.
"Yes,"
"I know it was wrong." He tells her, "When the others felt bad about leaving, I started to too at the last second. Then I remembered I was leaving you too." He adds.
"Good thing to know." She looks out the window to see Abby and Jimmy.
They follow Jimmy and Abby to Henry. She states that her father will probably be fine and then asks about the papers Jimmy gave him. Abby places the pages in the journal, stating that they match, and begins reading.
"That's Wakefield's journal?" Jennifer looks at Jimmy, who nods his head.
"Still the same handwriting." She turns away.
"My... My... my mom, when she was younger, sh... had an affair with Wakefield." She shoes the other, and Jennifer looks at the book.
Sarah had my child
"They had a child together?" Trish says.
"Abby, this doesn't mean anything." Henry tells her.
"Abby, you don't know what..." Jimmy starts.
"She had a child with him. I could be John Wakefield's daughter." Abby tells them.
"If it turns out true... Welcome to the team." Jennifer sighs.
"What?" Trish looks at her.
"When I was ten, I found out my mom had an affair. Since being here, I found out my real dad is Wakefield." She explains to her.
"A few of the burnt pages mention Jennifer and her mother. How she kept Jennifer from him and said, he'll never meet her." Abby speaks up.
"Well, if it's not you, he was talking about... we have another sibling somewhere." Jennifer huffs, leaving, so Abby follows her.
"Look, it doesn't mean anything." Jimmy tells Abby, and they see Shane talking to the others' whispering, so they look over at the three.
Sully gives Jennifer a look to follow him, so she does, and they go to talk alone, "Abby's Wakefield's kid too?"
"We don't know if that's for sure. Just that her mom had an affair with him, too, like mine. There could be a whole other kid somewhere." Jennifer tells him.
"Shane is set that it's yours and her fault."
"Of course he does." She tears up.
"Don't cry. I don't blame you. Remember, we already had this conversation." He pulls her into a hug.
"You don't, but you can't speak for the others." She looks up at him, so he kisses her forehead.
"Come on." He holds her hand, joining Danny and Beth, going to the kitchen.
"What does Shane mean? You and Abby are Wakefield's kids?" Danny asks Jennifer.
"We aren't sure if Abby really is, but I am. I know that for sure." Jennifer tells him.
"I don't think you or Abby are involved in this." Beth tells her.
"Thanks," Jennifer tells her.
"You son of a bitch!" They hear Henry shout so they go see what's up.
"Hey, don't shoot the messenger, man. It's not like I'm Rosemary's baby. Look, you want to blame somebody, blame them." Shane tells him.
"Hey, you don't get to talk about Jennifer or Abby."
"Really? What about the journal that says Abby's mom got knocked up by Wakefield. And says Jennifer is his daughter? Can I talk about that?" Shane adds.
"Shut up, Shane." Jimmy speaks up.
"What? Seven years, everything's cool on this island. Abby and Jennifer show up, people start dying like flies. You do the math."
"That's enough." Henry shouts.
"It's kinda weird, but we don't know anything." Sully speaks up, so Jennifer slaps him.
"Why are you defending them? Your brother's dead. You, your dad, your friends. I lost Kelly. They all connect to them." Abby leaves the room, so Jennifer follows her.
"We don't know if it's true about Abby." Jimmy tells Shane.
"You're sister is Wakefield's daughter. That was confirmed." Shane tells him.
"Yeah, she is, but she's still my sister, and I know my sister. She didn't even want to come back here, but she only did for Henry. You dated her for years, Shane. You know what type of person she is. She's not capable of being involved in these murders." Jimmy tells him.
"Her father doesn't determine what type of person she is. She had no clue who her real dad was until like a day ago. She told me, and I told her she's not him." Sully speaks up to add while Jimmy goes to look for the girls.
Jimmy finds Abby looking over Wakefield's diary while Jennifer watches her. Abby tells him that they are at the center of the murders, and Jimmy vows to protect them. When they attempt to return, Shane had locked them out, stating that Jimmy can come in, but not the girls. Henry begins a fight with Shane, forcing Danny and Sully to break it up.
When Sully realizes Beth was missing, Henry let's the three in and follows them to the kitchen, where there was a trail of blood. Henry leads Sully, Danny, Jimmy, Jennifer, and Abby into the tunnels. At an intersection in the tunnels, the blood goes in both directions, and Abby suggests they split into two groups.
"I would kill to know whose doing the killings. It's gotta be someone close to you and Abby. Because it started when we got here." Sully says as he, Jennifer, and Danny go down their path.
"I don't believe Wakefield is dead because of my letters still." She tells him.
"Letters?" Danny asks.
"Yeah, they were saying they were my dad. Then I saw Wakefield's handwriting, and it was the same as the letters. So Sully thinks someone just did some digging and copied his handwriting." Jennifer tells him.
The three spot a pool of blood on the mouth of a crawlspace in their section of the tunnel, "Where do you think that goes?" Danny asks.
"Probably someplace even worse than here." Sully answers, "What is that?" Sully looks at the space. "There is no way I'm going in there."
"Hold my gun." Jennifer tells them.
"What? No. You aren't going in there." Sully tells her.
"Yes, I am."
"No, I'll go." Danny says, so Jennifer already starts to crawl through.
"You see anything?" Sully asks, worried about her.
"More blood." She thinks the worse. "Guys, there's another tunnel." She shouts to them.
"Jen, be careful." Danny tells her.
As she looks down the other tunnel, she sees the top half of Beth, causing her to scream and crawl backwards to get out.
"What? What is it?" Sully asks.
"It's Beth!" She screams at them.
"Dead?!" Danny asks.
"YES!" She crawls faster, and once she was close enough, they grab her legs, pulling her out. She clings to Sully as they ask her what she saw. "Half... She was in half. Her bottom half wasn't there." Her voice shakes.
"We need to go." Danny says, handing Jennifer her gun so they leave in a rush running into Henry and Jimmy.
"Where's Abby?" Jennifer asks behind Sully.
"A gate came down and separated us. We need to get some tools to get her out." Henry tells them.
"We, uh... we found Beth." Sully tells him.
"How'd it- What happened?"
"He cut her up. Stuffed her in a crawl space." Danny tells him.
Everyone meets up with Shane, asking him for the tools in his truck. Shane admits that his tools are in the truck but that Trish stole the truck earlier.
Henry finds some bolt cutters when he hears the truck returning. He runs to the kitchen window and sees that Abby is with Trish. He drops the bolt cutters before leading everyone outside.

Paper Rings (Buddie's Version)
5 times Buck makes Eddie a paper ring + 1 time Eddie gives him a real on
Read on ao3 here
1.
It started as a joke really. Buck wasn’t sure where he’d gotten the notion, maybe from that stupidly catchy Taylor Swift song May had been so insistent on playing all summer. Something about it had wormed its way into a small corner of his brain and he couldn’t shake the words.
I’d marry you with paper rings
He’d thought about marrying Eddie. Of course, he had. A small part of him felt he and Eddie had been married for years, had been married since they’d stopped posturing over a man with a grenade in his leg and became some semblance of friends. Since Eddie had looked him in the eyes, stupidly large hand on his shoulder and ridiculously soulful brown eyes filled with so much sincerity and concern and said “There is no one in this world I trust with my son more than you.” He’d thought about it more recently, as they crossed the threshold over one year of dating. He thought about the pages of bookmarked rings he was hiding from Eddie on his laptop. He was months away from clicking the button to buy one, they had time, but he wanted it more than anything.
“What’s on your mind babe?” Eddie’s voice snapped him out of his thoughts.
“Nothing important. Just drifting.”
Buck fiddled with the straw wrapped, winding it around his finger. He’d brought coffee by the station on his day off, playing the role of thoughtful, off-duty friend, but it was really a ploy to see his boyfriend. The others had recognized that, thanking Buck for the coffee and making themselves as scarce as possible in the crowded firehouse, giving him and Eddie some time alone in the loft.
“Thank you for bringing the coffee baby. You know you didn’t have to do that,” Eddie took a sip of his latte.
“It’s no big deal. I wanted to see you anyway.”
“We saw each other this morning Buck,” he chuckled.
“I know. I just don’t like being on different shifts. I don’t like you being here without me when I can’t have your back.”
“I know honey,” Eddie tapped his fingers against Buck’s wrist.”But you’re gonna be there to pick up Christopher and feed him more junk food than I would ever approve of. Then I’ll be home in the morning to take him to school and we get a whole eight hours of uninterrupted us time.”
Buck nodded, continuing to wrap the paper around his finger, twisting the ends into a knot, and using the condensation from his cup to mold it into a shape that roughly resembled a ring. He reached across the table to take Eddie’s hands and slipped it off his own finger and onto Eddie’s.
“What’s this?” Eddie laughed, lifting his hand to look at what Buck had just made.
“A ring,” he said sheepishly, ducking his head.
“A paper ring. Like that dumb song, May has insisted on blaring for weeks?”
“Yeah, I guess.”
“You’re so cute baby,” Eddie chuckled, leaning over the table to kiss Buck softly.
Buck laughed into the kiss, cutting it short in case one of their teammates decided to come upstairs and give them shit.
“You can take it off if you want.”
“Shut up, I’m keeping it. Well, I’ll take it off before the next call, but you made it for me so I’m keeping it.”
Buck blushed but didn’t have time to dwell on it as the alarm started ringing.
“Thanks for the coffee babe. I’ll see you in the morning, I love you.”
“I love you too Eds, please be safe.”
“Always,” Eddie kissed the top of his head and he passed by, jogging down the stairs to catch up to the rest of the team.
As they pulled out of the bay, Eddie looked down, remembering the flimsy paper ring on his finger. He slipped it off, tucking it safely in the pocket of his turnout coat.
“What’s that?” Chim asked curiously.
“Nothing. Just a present from Buck.”
2.
The second time, they were out to dinner with Hen and Karen. It wasn’t a double date necessarily, considering the two preteen boys occupying the booth next to them, close enough for their parents to keep an eye on them, but far enough that they felt like they were here on their own.
Buck wasn’t quite sure what was wrong with him today. His anxiety was cranked up to eleven, despite the fact that nothing was going on in his life that warranted anxiety. He’d told Eddie, and his ever-concerned boyfriend had insisted that they could stay home and take it easy that day. Christopher could still go out for lunch with Denny and he could ask Hen and Karen to drop him back by the house. But Buck had insisted, not wanting to ruin Chris’s plans, and not wanting Eddie to be trapped in the house with him all day, dealing with his funk.
So that’s how he found himself here, in a sticky booth of a pizza place in downtown LA, once again twisting a straw wrapper around his fingers.
“You alright Buckaroo?” Hen asked, looking at her friend with concern. “You seem off today.”
Buck picked mindlessly at the salad he had ordered, “Yeah I’m alright. Just didn’t sleep well last night.”
“Don’t worry, I’m forcing him to nap when we get home.”
“Like you won't immediately fall asleep next to me,” Buck teased.
The easy banter made him feel marginally better but he continued to fiddle with the wrapper, the continuous movement taking his brain off the thoughts rattling around in it. He listened half-heartedly as Eddie and Karen chatted about school and Christopher’s therapy, things Buck really should have had more of an opinion on, but he couldn’t bring his voice to work. Before he knew it, he had another ring clutched between his fingers, slightly uglier than the first one due to his shaking hands, but a ring nonetheless.
Under the table, he grabbed Eddie's hand, slipped the ring onto his left hand, and kept their fingers tangled together.
“You okay?” Eddie mouthed.
Buck nodded, squeezing lightly.
On the ride home, Buck kept glancing down at where his and Eddie’s hands were clasped over the center console. The flimsy paper ring was still nestled on his finger. It warmed his heart a little and helped to relax the fist that had been clenched tightly around his lungs since he woke up that morning. Eddie wearing his stupid paper ring made him feel ridiculously loved.
Buck forgot about the ring until dinner time. Between his forced nap, helping Christopher with homework, and keeping Eddie from burning down the kitchen making dinner, he had forgotten about the crumpled straw wrapper taking up space on Eddie’s finger. That was until Christopher brought it to his attention.
“Dad, what’s on your hand?”
“Huh?” Eddie looked down at his hand and chuckled. “Buck made it for me. It's a ring.”
He pulled it off carefully and showed it to his son.
“Why did Buck make you a ring?”
“Just a silly joke Chris,” Buck said, reaching over to ruffle his hair.
“Will you make me one next time?”
“Sure buddy.”
3.
Three is a pattern. That’s what Buck had always heard from Maddie when he tried to convince her that his stupid stunts were totally accidents.
“One is an accident. Two is a coincidence. Three is a pattern, Evan.”
So his strange habit of making Eddie paper rings out of straw wrappers had become a pattern. He was sure Eddie had a small collection of them growing somewhere. If he even kept them. He wouldn’t blame him for throwing them away, but part of him liked to imagine that Eddie kept them somewhere safe, especially since he’d taken to wearing his little tokens all day long.
It had become almost subconscious, something to do with his hands as they sat around dinner tables or bar booths. Tonight it was the latter. Hen and Karen had invited them all out after their shift, to celebrate four days of freedom after a hellish week. Eddie was three Jack and Cokes deep, pressed against Buck’s said, arm slung over his shoulders on the back of the booth. He was nursing his own vodka and Sprite, leaning into his boyfriend’s solid warmth.
Tonight, however, he was doing it on purpose. The table was littered with straw wrappers, so it was easy to snatch one and start twisting it into the shape he’d become familiar with. As he worked, Eddie’s left hand drifted to rest on his thigh, rubbing gently over the denim that covered his skin.
“Hi,” he whispered against his ear.
“Hi,” Buck broke his concentration for a moment to look at him.
“Whatcha doin'?” Eddie’s head rested against his.
“Making your ring. It’s almost done.”
Eddie stayed like that, plastered to his side, watching as Buck finished his masterpiece. He picked up Eddie’s hand and slipped the ring on.
“Thanks, baby,” Eddie kissed the side of his head. “I’m gonna get another drink, anyone else want anything?”
The rest of the team spouted off their drink orders and Bobby excused himself to help Eddie with the load.
“What was that Buckaroo?” Chimney asked, leaning forward to prop his chin in his hand and stare his brother-in-law down with a little too much intensity for a drunk person.
“What was what?”
“You sitting over there with Eddie being all lovey and gross. Then you just tie a straw wrapper on his head and he acts like it’s the best present he’s ever gotten. What gives?”
“Nothin’ gives. It’s just a joke. I make him rings out of straw wrappers and he wears them. It’s just for fun.”
“That is sickeningly cute,” Albert pretends to gag then promptly takes a sip of his beer to hide his smile.
“Albert stop flirting with my boyfriend,” Eddie demands as he comes back to the table with a tray of drinks, Bobby following closely behind with the rest.
“I was calling both of you cute,” Albert winked, taking his drink from Eddie.
Eddie slides back down in the booth and smacks a kiss to the side of Buck’s head. “Another vodka and Sprite for my cute boyfriend.”
“Thanks, babe.”
Buck took Eddie’s hand into his lap and began playing absentmindedly with his fingers. He twisted the paper around his finger, sliding it on and off. He didn’t even notice when Eddie snatched up his own wrapper, twisting it into a similar shape and sliding it onto Buck’s hand.
“There, now we match.”
4.
Eddie had a small pile of paper rings building up in his work locker. He liked that Buck made them for him, enjoying the small, adorable gesture Buck made for him every time there was a bit of scrap paper lying in his immediate vicinity.
Tonight was a slow night at the firehouse, though no one dared utter the fated Q word, for fear of invoking another jinx or curse or whatever they wanted to call it. Eddie wasn’t complaining, instead, he was taking the opportunity to enjoy uninterrupted time with Buck. They worked the same shift, but every day other than today they had been spread thin and barely had time to speak as they passed each other, let alone spend any real time together. So tonight he was just enjoying his boyfriend’s company. Eddie was scrolling mindlessly on his phone and Buck had kicked on his boots and was lounging on the couch, feet tucked under Eddie’s thigh.
It was perfect and cozy and everything he had been missing all week. He didn’t even notice that Buck had somehow gathered some scrap paper and was currently making the most intricate ring in his collection. It wasn’t until Buck nudged him with his foot that Eddie turned his attention to him.
It was dark in the loft, lights dim since everyone else was in the bunk room taking advantage of the Q word night. He could still tell what Buck was holding out to him. A blue and white paper ring, with at least two braids and something that resembled a diamond.
“You have outdone yourself on this one Buck,” he chuckled, taking the ring and sliding it onto his finger.
“I’ve been working on it for the last half hour”, Buck said, only sounding a little bit proud of himself.
“It’s beautiful baby,” he praised. “But where did you find all of this paper.”
“I might have snagged the scraps from Chris’s art project this afternoon.”
Their son had stopped by after school with Carla and Buck and Ravi had spent the better part of an hour assisting him with his art assignment.
“You’re precious,” Eddie pulled him up to kiss him softly. “I love you, Evan Buckley.”
“I love you too, Eddie Diaz.”
5.
Eddie didn’t really notice the rings anymore. They had become such a staple he’d almost gotten used to the scratchy feel of the paper on his skin. Sometimes he even forgot to take them off, until he was sitting in the truck on his way to a high-risk call and slipped it into his pocket to keep it safe from the flames or just before he slipped into the shower, storing it someplace safe to keep the paper from disintegrating under the spray.
He’d become so used to the familiar feeling that he’d forgotten to take the latest one-off.
The newest addition to his paper ring collection had come from lunch with Buck that day.
He’d managed to slip away from his shift early, due to a very Q-word day at the station. He’d called Buck, who was hanging out at home up to his eyebrows in laundry, and asked him to meet him at a diner down the street from the station. Buck had slid into the booth across from him twenty minutes later, blue eyes bright, smile plastered to his pretty face.
“Hi babe,” he said cheerfully, leaning across the table to kiss him.
“Hey, you. You’re awfully chipper for someone who’s been folding my socks all day.”
“Just glad I got to see you earlier than expected.”
“I’m glad I got to see you too,” Eddie smiled and reached across the table to take his hand. “I ordered you an iced tea and those chips you like. That okay?”
“That’s perfect.”
He told Buck stories from their calls today, a kid who locked himself in the bathroom and his dad giving himself a broken wrist trying to take down the door was his favorite until their drinks and appetizer arrived.
Buck didn’t even hide this time. As soon as the straw was unwrapped, he was twisting the straw into a ring for Eddie.
“Here ya go,” Buck grinned, sliding the ring onto his hand.
“Ya know baby, I’m starting to get convinced you’re gonna propose to me with a ring made out of paper.”
“Maybe,” he winked.
When they arrived home, the house was still quiet. Christopher was at school for another two hours and even though there was still a mountain of laundry waiting for them in the living room, he lured Buck to bed.
They were laying together, sweaty and sated, his hand running through Buck’s curls when he caught a glimpse of the paper still on his hand. It was crumpled from their activities but still mostly intact. He slipped it off and held it in front of Buck’s face.
“You kept this on the whole time?” Buck chuckled.
“I kind of forgot about it. I’ve just gotten used to them now. It’s comfortable, having it on.”
Buck grabbed his hand and kissed his finger where the ring had been sitting, “One day I’m gonna put a real ring on your hand.”
Eddie thought of the text he’d gotten from the jeweler earlier that day, telling him that Buck’s ring was ready and waiting for him to pick up.
Not if I beat you to it.
+1
He hadn’t really meant to tell May about his plans for proposing. He wasn’t hiding it from his friends and family, but May hadn’t been the first person he thought of. However, she had a habit of seeing right through him. He wasn’t supposed to even see her before the dinner they had planned at Bobby and Athena’s place, but Buck had asked him to stop by dispatch on his way home and grab something he’d left in Maddie’s apartment a few nights ago when he’d gone over to have drinks with his sister.
Maddie had been on a call when he walked in, so Josh had sent him to wait for her in the break room, telling him he’d send her his way when she was done. He was settled at the table on his phone, grinning uncontrollably at a picture Buck had sent him of himself and Chris at the school carnival the night before, when May came in, two cups of coffee in her hand.
“Hey Eddie, what are you doing here? You’re not leaving the 118 again right?”
“No definitely not,” he laughed. “Buck and Bobby would be having a race to see who could kill me first.”
“Good.”
“I’m just here to see Maddie really quick. Buck left something at her house the other night.”
“Why did your face just do that?”
“Do what?”
“The thing it just did?”
“What thing May?”
“Your face did a weird thing when you said Buck’s name. And you were grinning like an idiot when I came in here. So I ask again, what’s going on with your face?”
“Okay look,” he turned his chair to face her completely. “If I tell you, you have to promise me you won’t rat me out. No one knows yet but,” he reached into his pocket and pulled out the ring box. “I’m gonna ask Buck to marry me tonight at the party.”
“Oh my God Eddie!”
“Shh,” he smacked her arm lightly. “Keep your voice down. I only told your mom and
Bobby but no one else. Maddie can’t find out because she’ll blab to Buck and ruin the surprise.”
“My lips are sealed,” she said resolutely, making a show of zipping her finger across her mouth. “The ring is amazing by the way.”
“I just picked it up this morning. I hope he likes it.”
He tilts the box, letting the light glint off of the band. It was relatively simple, smooth black titanium with a small stripe of gold through the middle. The meaningful part was on the inside, carefully engraved in Eddie’s own handwriting I’ve got your back, and his initials scratched next to it.
“He’s gonna love it. But what are all of those pieces of paper in the box?”
“Oh those,” he lifted one, straightening it out so May could see the real shape. “After you made us listen to that insufferable Taylor Swift song all last summer, Buck started making me rings out of straw wrappers every time we went out. I saved them all and I just thought it would be cute.”
“That's adorable,” she sighed. “And that song is good, you love it don’t even try to lie to me.”
“Whatever you say.”
He snapped the box shut and tucked it safely back into his pocket, moments before Maddie entered the room.
“Hey Eddie, sorry to keep you waiting,” she handed him the green thing she’d had slung across her shoulder. “Here’s Buck’s sweater, I washed it for him and everything.”
“Thanks, Maddie. I better get home, he’s probably getting impatient wondering where I am.”
“Have a good day Eddie. I’ll see you tonight.”
“See ya. Bye May.”
“Bye Eddie.”
He, Buck, and Chris spent the rest of the afternoon cleaning the house and getting around to the chores that they’d slacked on during the week. With an hour until the start of the party, Buck sent Christopher off to get himself ready with instructions to yell if he needed anything, and herded Eddie into their room to get ready themselves.
Eddie stood behind Buck, wrapping his arms around his waist and pressing a soft kiss to the back of his head as Buck stood in front of their closet, trying to decide what to wear.
“Wear this,” he said, reaching around to pull the newly returned green sweater off the hanger. He turned Buck around and held it up to his chest. “It does good things for your eyes.”
Buck blushed and slipped it over his head, tucking the front ever so slightly into his jeans. Eddie pulled out his own black button-down and rolled up the sleeves, distracting Buck with his perfect arm as he sat on the bed and attempted to focus on tying his shoes. One entirely too short make-out session (interrupted only by their son yelling that they were going to be late) later, they were parking their truck outside of Bobby and Athena’s house.
Eddie felt like the ring was burning a hole in his pocket as he sat through an hour of drinks and small talk before dinner. When everyone’s plates were clear and they were lounging around the table letting their food settle before they indulged in dessert, Eddie raised an eyebrow at Athena from across the room.
Is it time?
She gave him a slight nod, barely noticeable to those around them.
It’s time.
He cleared his throat and stood up, catching everyone’s attention, including his soon-to-be fiance.
“Buck can you come here please,” he asked holding out a hand.
Buck stood and pressed into his side, letting Eddie wrap a gentle arm around his waist.
“I think I can speak for both of us when I say that Buck and I are so thankful for the love and support you’ve given us over the past few years. I know it wasn’t easy, especially when we had our heads in the sand-”
“Amen!” Chimney shouted, glaring at Maddie and Hen when they elbowed him in the sides.
“But,” he resumed with a chuckle. “We got there in the end. Y’all are family, so it only felt right to do this here.”
He pulled away from Buck, fishing the ring from his pocket and dropping to one knee.
“Evan Buckley,” he ignored the squeals around them, focusing only on his favorite pair of eyes. “Will you marry me?”
“Yes,” he choked out with a sob.
He stood and pulled Buck into a fierce kiss, one rivaled only by the day they got their heads screwed on right and finally made it official. Their family was clapping and cheering, Ravi and Albert whistling at them.
When Buck finally pulled away, Eddie took his hand and slipped the ring on his finger. He looked down at it, moving his wrist to see it from all angles.
“It’s beautiful Eddie. But what’s all this paper?” he asked, plucking one from the box still cradled in Eddie’s hand.
“What do you think?”
He watched Buck study it for a minute before the realization dawned.
“These are all the paper rings I gave you. You saved them?”
“I saved them all Evan.”
“I love you so damn much,” Buck hugged him, tears returning at full force and wetting the collar of his shirt.
“I love you more Evan Buckley.”
“It’s gonna be Evan Diaz soon.”
“Damn right.”
Somewhere off to the side, there was the soft sound of a phone connecting to the speaker and after a moment of silence, the opening sounds of that damn Taylor Swift song.
“May!” they shouted in unison.
The only response was her laugh. He hated the stupid song, but he still dragged Buck out into the yard for the worst dance ever, totally absorbed by his fiance. They let May have her moment. Besides, the song was just too damn perfect.

Tumblr media
It was a beautiful day at the pier. Crowded, yet beautiful. Carnival music was playing in every direction. The smell of funnel cakes, cotton candy, and popcorn wafted through the air. There was laughing, screaming, and merriment everywhere you looked.
You had to give Evan Buckley credit. He sure knew how to pick a good first date spot.
Okay, so maybe date was pushing it a little bit. You have known the guy for a while now, but that’s mostly because of Christopher. You are the nurse at Christopher’s school. It’s how you met Buck. When Christopher is ill, or perhaps has an incident where he needs to go home, sometimes Buck picks him up. He was, after all, one of the few people Eddie Diaz trusted around his son. Since Buck quit the LAFD and Eddie was working constantly to pick up the extra work, Christopher was often in Evan Buckley’s care.
And my goodness, what a charmer Evan Buckley turned out to be.
Buck and Christopher finished riding Shark Frenzy, a ride that reminded you of the teacups at Disney World. They met up with you at a blue picnic table, where you had cotton candy ready for the boys.
Buck took the blue one. “B for Buck, B for blue.”
Christopher took the pink one and dived right into it, giggling and enjoying himself.
“Mmm,” Christopher said with a satisfying smile. Pink floss was stuck to his fingers, but he paid no mind to it.
“Good?” Buck asked, and the little boy nodded. Buck went to snatch a piece, but Christopher pulled back with a laugh. It was kind of adorable to see.
“Where to next?” you asked as you looked around. In every direction, there were amusement park rides everywhere.
“Let’s take a break and play some games,” Buck said as he flashed you a charming smile.
The three of you cleaned up the table, with Buck tossing everything in the trash. You were on one side of Christopher and Buck was on the other, with the little boy using his crutches in between. Slowly, the three of you made your way to the arcade row on the pier. Games were lined up one right after another and Christopher pointed to a water gun shooting game.
“I want to play that,” he said, and Buck complied to his wishes.
You insisted on paying for a round or two, with Buck being out of a job and all, but the handsome ex-firefighter swatted your hand away and plopped two dollars on the table.
“Two rounds,” Buck told the person in charge.
“You are so stubborn,” you retorted as you pocketed your money.
Buck only smiled and sat down. He pulled Christopher into his lap and together, they began round one.
Christopher held the trigger and Buck controlled the aiming. The object of the game was to shoot a stream of water at a small target which will raise a platform. The first person whose platform reaches the top wins.
Together, they were invested. Honestly, you were watching from the sidelines and you thought for sure they had some kind of strategy planned out beforehand.
“I am so proud of you right now, I cannot be more proud of you. Come on, we’re so close! So close!” Buck was telling Christopher as their little platform was rising more and more with each passing second. Christopher was smiling the entire time, and when the bell rang, both boys acted like it was the greatest moment of their lives. They screamed and cheered, and celebrated their win.
“You did it! Come on, high five!” Buck said as he held his hand out.
Christopher slapped it as hard as he could, and Buck over-exaggerated the little boy’s strength and flailed backwards.
However, the sound of a siren interrupted the fun and games and Buck immediately turned. He was looking past you, over your shoulder. Slowly, he stood up, his eyes never leaving what was happening behind you. Curiosity got the better of you and you turned to see what the man was looking at.
“And we have a winner!” the man running the water gun booth said in the background, handing a giant brown teddy bear to Christopher.
But the two of you paid no mind to that as an ambulance rolled up through the crowd.
A person in some kind of dinosaur costume collapsed. Buck was inching closer to the scene, and you grabbed him by the arm to hold him in place. He looked down at your hand, which was around his bicep and his eyes traced your arm up to you.
“The paramedics got this,” you whispered to him and he nodded, looking defeated and a bit sad.
It broke your heart.
At school, when Christopher would see you, he would always go on and on about Buck and firefighting. Buck had such a passion for his job and to not have it at the moment must be soul-crushing.
“Buck!” Christopher said behind the two of you, “Buck!”
The paramedics shocked their patient with an AED and you could feel Buck exhale. He was holding his breath the entire time. You pulled him back and he turned to face you with a forced smile. While he would never admit it, he was so grateful you were there.
“Come on, you two. Let’s go sit down and take a break,” you said as you handed Christopher his crutches and abandoning the second round of the water gun game. The three of you found an empty bench at the edge of the pier and sat down. Christopher wanted to look out at the ocean, so Buck picked him up and helped him stand on the bench. Gripping the back of Christopher’s shirt tightly so that the boy doesn’t fall in, Buck sat down, and you sat next to him. There was silence for a little bit and you looked over at Buck, who seemed deep in thought.
“Ever think about what you wanna do with your life?” Buck asked, “What you want to be when you grow up?”
“Astronaut or a pirate,” Christopher answered instantly. It was like he didn’t even need to think about it.
Buck nodded in agreement. “Some good choices. Cool outfits too.”
“No wait,” Christopher said with a smile, “a firefighter.”
Of course, it made sense. His father was a firefighter and Buck used to be one. Growing up in that field and being around that environment made such an impression on Christopher.
Buck only chuckled and nodded a little to accept Christopher’s answer. He clenched his jaw, wanting to clearly move on from the topic. “What about you, Y/N? Was nursing what you always wanted to do?”
You turned to look at him, a little confused by the question. No one ever asked you that before. Everyone just assumed nursing was your passion, considering the overwhelming amount of schooling you need to become one.
“Yes,” you said with a nod, “I like helping others.”
Buck grinned and turned his head to look at you. He knew all about helping others. It was one of the many reasons the two of you relate so well with each other. Slowly, his hand was creeping off to the side, getting closer and closer to yours without trying to seem obvious. You didn’t even realize until his pinky finger was brushing the back of your hand.
“Yeah, me too.” Buck’s pinky linked through your own and you could swear that your heart fluttered as he touched you. Could it be? Did Evan Buckley have a little crush on you? Did you have a crush on Evan Buckley? Was this really happening?
He was gazing into your eyes and…wait a minute, was he leaning in? Should you lean in too? Not going to lie, you wanted to. And… there goes your head, getting closer and closer to his.
But he stopped. He looked alarmed, shocked even, and turned his head to look out at the ocean. You slumped back with a slight pout, knowing it was too good to be true. It was stupid to have a little crush on Buck.
The ex-firefighter was gripping onto Christopher’s shirt tightly as he stood up, your pinkies unlocking, and you could tell instantly that something was very wrong. You stood up too and looked at Buck.
He held onto Christopher as a crowd of people were gathering behind you, watching was well. Everyone seemed to stop in their tracks and stare at the ocean.
“What’s wrong?” you asked as you followed his line of sight out to the ocean.
But the answer was right there in front of you. The water had pulled back drastically.
“Where did all the water go?” Christopher asked, looking confused.
Panic was slowly rising inside of you as you stood next to Buck. You felt his hand slip into yours, holding your fingers tightly in a grip. You clung back onto him with your other hand wrapping around his arm tightly.
A warning siren blasted through the loudspeakers in place of the fun carnival music.
A giant wave was rolling back, taking in as much water as it could possibly carry. Your panic turned into fear as you saw the wave approach the shore. A massive tsunami was about to hit and you, along with Buck and Christopher, were trapped on the pier.

Rising to the Challenge
Written for @911fluffweek : Day 7 -  Free choice.
All my love to the wonderful @alilypea for beta-reading this for me and to @noxsoulmate who provided the original prompts.  Go read their fics!
Pairing: Evan ‘Buck’ Buckley/Eddie Diaz
Rating: T
Word Count: 894
Summary: Maddie dares Buck to kiss someone in the bar for $20....
Can also be read on A03.
*****
"So let me get this right," Buck said, looking back and forth between Maddie and Chim.  "You are daring me, a measly $20, to randomly kiss someone in this bar?"  The whole team was at their favourite karaoke bar near the station, and Maddie wasn’t letting up on her attempt to set Buck up with someone.
Maddie nodded eagerly while Chim was looking a tad queasy, feeling unsettled at his girlfriend's eagerness to set up her brother.  "And an extra $20 if they kiss you back." She added, doubling down on the original dare, waving the two bills in her hand.  Chim groaned audibly at the latest addition, hunching down in his seat as if he was trying to disappear into the booth itself.
Buck glanced around the room, grinning as his eyes settled on Eddie.  He slowly made his way over to his boyfriend, trying not to laugh at the easy money he was about to make.  "Hey there, handsome," Buck said with a grin, obviously checking out his partner from head to toe.
Eddie shifted uneasily, not used to this sort of attention from Buck in public, but couldn't help but feel a bit flattered as well.  He let out a small smile as Buck moved closer, placing a hand on Eddie's waist.
Glancing up at his boyfriend, the noise of the bar - including the hoots and cheers from their teammates faded into the background, as Buck leaned down slightly to capture his lips, his tongue sliding in to explore his mouth gently.  Eddie couldn't help but to moan into the kiss, reaching his hands up to grip Buck's curly hair and pulling himself flush against Buck as they continued to make out against the bar.
Finally, remembering that they were in the middle of a bar surrounded by their teammates, Buck pulled back reluctantly, letting his forehead rest against Eddie's, trying to catch his breath.  "Will you marry me?" The words came tumbling out of Buck's mouth as he gazed into Eddie's eyes.  This wasn't how he had planned to propose, but he meant every word of it.  He wanted to spend the rest of his life with Eddie and with Christopher.
Eddie nodded, finally managing to utter a quiet yes as he leaned in to kiss his boyfriend - wait fiance - again.
XXXXX
After all the cheers, handshakes, and congratulations, Buck and Eddie made their way back over, hand in hand, to where Maddie and Chimney were sitting.
Expecting more congratulations and likely some hugs, Buck was surprised when Maddie stood up and punched him lightly in the shoulder instead.  “I’ve spent all this time wondering and worrying about you. You didn’t think of me once?” Maddie said, waving her arms around in frustration.
“Uh, sorry?” Buck said, exchanging confused looks with Chimney and Eddie.  Chimney gave a slight shrug of his shoulders to indicate that he had no idea what Maddie was going on about.
“You should have told me that you were dating Eddie!” Maddie exclaimed, punching him again in the same shoulder, a bit harder this time.
“Maddie, Maddie, could you please avoid hitting my boyfriend?” Eddie asked, stepping in front of Buck, his arms up as if he was confronting a frightened animal.
“Fiance,” both Buckley siblings corrected, looking at each other and then bursting out laughing.  Maddie finally calmed down enough to smother both Eddie and Buck in huge hugs, with Chimney repeating her actions right after.
The four of them sat down as Maddie motioned for another pitcher of beer for the table.  Buck reached out his hand for his money, but Maddie simply shoved a mug of beer in his hand instead.  “No money for you, cheater,” she replied, handing the extra money to their waiter as a tip instead.
“What’s this about money?” Eddie asked, a confused look on his face as he glanced back and forth between Maddie and Buck.
“Boy do I have a story to fill you in on,” Chimney said with a grin, ignoring the threatening glares he was receiving from both Buckleys.  As he started to explain the bet, Eddie’s grin only got wider until he started laughing out loud.
“So you mean I have Maddie to thank for a marriage proposal?”  Eddie finally choked out, still laughing hard.
“Hey, no, no!  That was all me,” Buck said, pointing at his chest.  “It wasn’t how I planned on asking, but that was all my idea,” Buck confessed, wanting to make it clear to his partner that the proposal was absolutely not Maddie’s idea.  At that point, Chimney was able to pull Maddie away from the two, feeling like they needed a bit more privacy for this conversation.
Once they were on their own, Eddie reached across the table and grabbed both of Buck’s hands.  “So you’ve been thinking about proposing….” Eddie asked, not really elaborating further.
“Since the first day I met you,” Buck confessed, blushing a deep shade of red that only got darker as Eddie pulled him into a passionate kiss that promised much more later.  Not willing to wait any longer, Buck broke the kiss, grabbing Eddie’s arm and pulling him out of the bar, barely remembering to wave bye to their team on their way out.  It was time to show Eddie just how much he loved him but in private this time around.

no kiss ready in an hour - very fine morning F50 ½° at 7 50 am - wrote out for A- fair copy of the letter I wrote for her last night -  Had John Bottomley to ask me if he should vote for Mr Rawson (Christopher) a candidate for the Borough on the supposition of Mr Wood’s vacating his seat on accepting office from the new Whig radical Melbourne ministers - had come to ask me because he knew Mr R- had not behaved very well to me about the coal - I said that was a private affair - his election was a public one - he was a good conservative, and therefore if I had a hundred votes he should have them - breakfast at 9 1/2 - Had Mrs Dewhirst to ask if I would take her fixtures and the skin pits and shed, but in fact to see if I would let them stay beyond mayday the house at Upper brea not being likely to be ready by that time - said I would send Washington to see about the fixtures - had told him long since I would not take the shed or pits - should be happy to accommodate Mrs Dewhirst if I could, but had promised Mawson the house till he could get into the Stump x Inn, and therefore I could not now say anything - would speak to Washington and see what could be done - Booth the mason come and Mr Bradley - had them both at the dry bridge - explained and left them to agree about time and price - Booth to do the job for 40/. - at 10 40 got into the drift-corve - John Mann went before and the old man they employ pushed me alone, and I went up the drift and along the little cross drift that brings the water out just above the fish-pond and up to Walker pit (all along the drift) - examined the ring-dam that carries the water of the dist band from all round the pit into the drift - drawn up at the pit’s mouth - very good neatly worked drift and nice well sunk pit - gave John Mann 5/. for a footing with which he seemed well pleased - stood talking sometime - he thinks there must be a good deal of upper bed coal left - it  would be some expense but might be as well to examine into the old upper brea works from Walker pit - thought Rawsons were getting my upper bed now - sometime with Mr. Bradley had him in Trough of Bolland wood about throwing bridge over the glen and desired him to give me a plan for a Lodge - and then with him on the top of the house putting in new window (5 lights instead of 3) to light the passage to my aunt’s room etc - came in with Mr. B- at 1 ½ and sat talking to him while he dined - he thinks the old bridge over the brook, going to Breakneck, might be thrown over Trough of Bolland wood glen - completed - for £50 and that a Lodge done in part so that a person might live in it might be done for less than £100 - A- rode to Hove edge to speak to Ann Lee about taking the Sunday School scholars to church on Sunday and was back about 4 ¼ - then walked with her ¾ hour in the garden - except these 3/4 hour out from 2 to 6 ¾ with John and Robert Mann ordered bringing out the drift just above the fish-pond and 2 or 3 times on the top of the house - told Mr B- to order for me about sawing up the oak logs and to come on Monday to give orders about the granary and doing up the laundry - Mr B- had coffee while we dined and went away very soon after 7 - dinner at 7 - coffee - sometime with my father and Marian - came upstairs at 8 ¾ - asleep on the sofa - with my aunt from 9 50 to 10 ¼. - before and after till 10 ½ wrote out all but the first 8 lines of yesterday and the whole of today - very fine day - F51° now at 10 ½ pm in my study - Letter tonight from Mr Thomas Register office for servants York mentioning John Clark aetatis 23 who lived last with ‘Mrs Chator of Spennithorne near Bedale.’

Hii, so i saw you were taking buddie prompts and i wanted to ask if you could do one with fake dating? No rush!! Thank you
I’m going to be completely honest, I wrote and rewrote this so many times but this one has been the best one. I started writing it almost immediately after the finale and I’m pretty excited about it- hence why it’s so long. Also, there are some things in here that I’m not a 100% sure are canonically correct, but I’m just going with it so bear with me.
Eddie frowned as he watched Buck distractedly wash and then dry the lunch dishes. Ever since the train derailment he’d been acting off, Eddie had just figured it had to do with seeing Abby again and the ensuing conversation that the two of them had apparently had- not that Buck had told Eddie that himself, oh no he’d had to hear about it from Bobby. Not that he was hurt by that, or jealous. Because that would be childish.
Eddie got up from the table and he moved to lean back against the counter next to where Buck was washing the same plate that he’d just dried off. “Everything okay?” Eddie asked quietly and leaned in a little to brush their shoulders together.
“Huh?” Buck asked and looked up, obviously broken out of whatever headspace he’d been in by Eddie’s touch. “Oh, yeah. Everything’s fine.”
Eddie wanted to push because he knew that something was wrong with Buck, but he didn’t know how to without being a jackass and making Buck get all defensive with him. He scratched at the corner of his eye with his thumb and tried a different tactic. “You know that Christopher’s still at sleep-away camp and the house has been too quiet without him around. You want to come over for a bit? We can watch some movies, play some video games, or whatever. We could go out if you wanted to do that instead.”
Buck watched him for a moment, obvious suspicion in his blue eyes at Eddie’s question being followed up by the offer, but then he nodded. “You know there’s that place down on South Figueroa…” Buck trailed off and Eddie nodded.
“Sounds great,” Eddie said and he took the dish towel from Buck’s hand to finish up drying the dishes. Buck grinned at him and Eddie rolled his eyes before snapping the towel at Buck’s hip playfully. Buck danced away from the towel with a laugh that had something warm and content settling into Eddie’s chest at managing to lighten Buck’s mood- even if it was just for a little while.
…..
Eddie followed Buck in his truck so that both of them would have their vehicles when it came time to finally head home. Buck’s semi-flirty smile that he gave the hostess- typical Buck behavior because he knew how that smile made people melt- wasn’t as bright as usual and Eddie winced a little as they were walked over to a corner booth.
Buck glanced over the drinks menu before he looked at the waiter with a charming smile. “I’ll take an old-fashioned but instead of the house bourbon I’ll take Jack, please.” The waiter nodded and Eddie shot Buck a surprised look. Buck didn’t usually drink hard liquor, so something had to be bothering him for him to order something so strong. “Eddie,” Buck said expectantly, and Eddie snapped out of it.
He sent the waiter an apologetic smile. “Tequila, straight.” Buck’s eyes widened and Eddie just bumped his foot under the table. The waiter simply nodded and went to take their orders over to the bar. “What?” Eddie asked when Buck kept looking at him with that worried puppy-dog look.
           “Tequila?” Buck questioned.
“An old-fashioned?” Eddie countered with a raised eyebrow. Buck slumped down a little in the booth and Eddie bumped Buck’s leg under the table again so that Buck would look at him. “What’s going on, Buck?” Buck fidgeted in his seat and after a moment he reached over to pull something out of the inside pocket of his jacket. He tossed it over to Eddie and kept his eyes down on where he was resting his wrists on the table.
Eddie leaned over to take the envelope. He saw Buck’s name written in a neat and objectively pretty handwriting. He traced his fingers over it before flipping it over and pulling out the cardstock that was inside. He flinched as he read it over. It was an invitation to Abby Clark’s wedding. He could certainly see why Buck was ordering hard liquor now.
“Well shit,” Eddie said and tucked the invitation back into the envelope before he dropped it onto the table.
“Yeah,” Buck murmured softly and picked at his nails. The waiter came- effectively cutting of their awkward attempts at a conversation- and gave them their drinks. Eddie thanked the waiter as the shots were set out and the waiter handed him a couple of lime wedges and a salt grinder.
Eddie nodded his thanks before he turned his attention back to where Buck was resolutely staring either down at the table for into the bottom of his glass. “So what are you wanting to do?” Eddie asked before he licked the back of his hand and sprinkled salt on his hand as he waited for Buck to find his voice.
His eyes had lifted from the table to track Eddie’s movements, so Eddie took that as a minor victory. “I don’t know,” Buck admitted after a moment before he lifted his own glass to take a drink. He fiddled with the glass as Eddie licked the salt off his hand and threw back his first shot. He swallowed thickly before taking a lime wedge from the bowl and taking a bite. He wrinkled his nose at the sourness. “I don’t want to be the pathetic ex that shows up to the wedding alone and moping. I- I don’t want to get back together with Abby- she left me in the worst way possible and I don’t think I could ever trust her again- but she was my first love, you know?” Buck shrugged almost nervously as he fiddled with his drink.
“Then don’t go alone,” Eddie said as if it were that easy. He understood how heavily a first love could weigh on someone. He’d had a hard time letting go of Shannon when she’d left him and then once she’d told him that she wanted a divorce. He felt for Buck, but he also knew that Buck wanted to be a good friend to Abby despite everything. And good friends went to their friend’s wedding.
“It’s not exactly like I have anyone I could bring with me. You know I haven’t been… well, I haven’t been looking but that’s besides the point. I’m not good at this.” Buck grimaced and Eddie could hear the dejected note to Buck’s voice.
“What do you mean?” Eddie asked after he’d downed his second shot. He couldn’t understand why anyone would want to leave Buck- let alone the way that Abby, or even Ali though that one wasn’t nearly as bad, had done it. Buck was smart and kind and so considerate- and not to mention so incredibly hot: with the eyes and the biceps and the cute little birthmark. Eddie blinked and thought maybe he needed to slow down a little on the tequila. Not that he wouldn’t normally think about how attractive Buck was- he wasn’t blind- but it certainly didn’t sit so warmly in his stomach.
“Dating,” Buck said and finally looked up at Eddie. “I guess I’m pretty good at the physical part,” Buck said with a bit of a smirk that had Eddie snorting and shaking his head fondly, “but the emotional part.” He made a noise in the back of his throat. “I don’t know.”
“You haven’t found the right person, Buck. You’re twenty-eight, that’s young enough to still be making mistakes with love.” Eddie shrugged and Buck gave him a bland look.
“You’re only three years older than me, Eddie. And you were married with a kid,” Buck pointed out blandly.
“And we see how that turned out,” Eddie shot back. Buck’s mouth clamped shut and Eddie shook his head again. “Don’t turn this around on me. We’re talking about you.” Eddie downed his last shot and stacked the glasses inside themselves before thoughtfully chewing on the lime wedge that was left. He tossed it back into the bowl. “Easy solution to all of this is just ask a friend with to come with you and act like you’re together.”
Buck looked at him for a long while before he shook his head. “There’s not really anyone that I could ask- not that Abby doesn’t already know- so...”
“Abby doesn’t know me,” Eddie said and he had no idea where that had come from, but he wouldn’t take it back. Not with the stunned and maybe- just maybe- hopeful expression it put on Buck’s face. “I could go with you.”
Buck’s face flushed prettily and Eddie couldn’t help but feel a small smile tug at his lips. “I can’t ask you to do that.”
“You’re not asking, Buck. I’m offering.” Eddie shrugged despite the nerves now squirming in his stomach. Buck watched him for a long moment and chewed his lip, Eddie’s eyes reflexively dropping down to focus on Buck’s mouth.
Buck released his lower lip from between his teeth and downed the rest of his drink. “Okay.”
“Okay?” Eddie asked, having been momentarily distracted.
“Yeah, let’s do it.” Buck said and tucked his hands underneath his thighs. Eddie grinned and he felt warm all over when Buck grinned back, the flush from earlier still highlighting his cheeks.
…..
Eddie was in the middle of getting his bills in order and was chewing on the cap of his pen when the door to his house opened up and Buck swept into the room. His hair was damp and sticking up in soft waves that Buck was usually so careful to gel down. Eddie tried not to ignore the slight flutter in his chest.
“We’re going to have to come up with a plausible cover story if this is going to work,” Buck said without any sort of context. “The social media aspect is covered because I’ve been posting pictures with you and Christopher for- well basically since we’ve been friends.”
“Buck, what’re you talking about?” Eddie asked and shuffled his papers into a pile so that he could give Buck his whole attention while not having to worry about Buck’s flailing knocking them onto the floor.
“About the whole fake-dating thing for Abby’s wedding,” Buck said and he tucked his hands into his pockets. “If we don’t have our story straight, the whole thing will fall apart and that will be more embarrassing than if I showed up alone.”
Eddie watched Buck fidget for a while before nodding for Buck to sit down. “Well, every good lie starts with the truth. We met at work,” Eddie said tentatively. “Abby saw me at the crash, so I assume she’ll remember that I’m with the 118.”
“Right,” Buck said and he squirmed a little in his seat. “So how did we get together?”
Eddie frowned. “I don’t know, Buck. Like normal people do.”
Buck rolled his eyes. “I meant who asked who out? When? Why? That sort of stuff.”
Eddie sighed and scrubbed a hand over his face. “Uh… we could say that you asked me out,” Eddie said. “Not going to sting my pride and anyone who knows you will probably believe that. You’re more… personable.” Buck was an extrovert that thrived on attention. Granted, all of the people Buck had gone out with- to the extent of Eddie’s knowledge- had been the one to ask him out but that didn’t necessarily mean anything.
“Okay…” Buck said and nodded, obviously trying to think. “We can’t say that it’s a new thing because you don’t invite a new partner to something like a wedding. Gives off the wrong kind of vibes. So I guess… about a year? Seems a good timeline for ‘be my plus one to a wedding’ type of commitment.”
“Sounds fine to me,” Eddie said not really understanding at all what Buck was talking about. If you had a significant other and were invited to a wedding did it really matter how long you’d been together? With the look Buck was giving him, apparently it did. “As for the why- that’s none of anyone’s business. Besides, one look and five minutes with you and everyone will get why.” Eddie felt the back of his neck heating up at how much he’d revealed, and he cleared his throat. “Good enough?”
“Yeah,” Buck said and his voice was a little strained. He pushed his fingers through his hair, mussing it up further, and let out a harsh breath. “You really don’t have to do this, Eddie.”
Eddie let out a short laugh and shook his head. “It’s not a big deal. We go to a wedding, have a nice time, and then you get to come back home feeling better about this whole Abby thing. I’m alright with being part of that. I don’t get enough opportunities to get dressed up,” Eddie teased and knocked his foot against Buck’s ankle.
Buck opened his mouth- probably to say something smart- but then he flushed and closed his mouth firmly. Eddie frowned a little at that, it wasn’t like Buck to be careful with his words, not around Eddie anyways, but he didn’t push. He didn’t really get the chance anyways because Buck was launching into a million questions about Eddie’s plans for when Christopher got home.
…..
“Hey, Eddie, can I talk to you in my office for a second?” Bobby asked and Eddie looked up from the book Carla had recommended to him.
“Yeah,” Eddie said and folded down the corner of the page before closing his book and tossing it onto the side table. He made his way into Bobby’s office and only felt a little nervous as Bobby closed the door and went to sit behind his desk. “Everything alright, Cap?”
“I was about to ask you the same thing,” Bobby said and gestured for Eddie to sit.
“What do you mean?” Eddie asked with a frown.
“Well, Buck just told me that you and him are going to need some time off. Because you’re his date to Abby’s wedding.” Bobby fixed him with a pointed look and Eddie tried not to squirm under Bobby’s gaze. “Is there paperwork I need to be filling out?”
Eddie felt his face get hot and he was sure that he was turning red. “This isn’t like that,” Eddie said and shook his head. “Buck didn’t want to show up to Abby’s wedding alone. I guess he thought that it would look bad- or make him look desperate- and so I offered to go with him.”
“As his date.” Bobby raised an eyebrow but it wasn’t really a question.
“Yeah. As his fake-date.” Eddie’s stomach flopped as Bobby’s face slowly turned from a confused frown to an almost knowing smile.
“Oh, I see. His fake-date,” Bobby said and his mouth quirked up in amusement, only making Eddie’s face burn all the hotter.
“So can you get someone to cover or should I tell Buck that both of us can’t go?” Eddie asked, a little defensively in his embarrassment.
“I’ll make it work,” Bobby said and waved Eddie off. Eddie stood and he straightened out his uniform shirt to try and salvage some of his dignity in the face of Bobby’s fatherly teasing. “Have fun.”
Eddie nodded at Bobby and turned to walk out.
“But not too much fun,” Bobby teased and Eddie turned to give Bobby a sharp look as a blush bloomed across his face and down his neck.
…..
“What do you think?” Eddie asked and stepped out into the living room where Carla and Christopher were sitting at the table, working on a new craft project that Christopher had learned at sleep-away camp and wanted to recreate at home. Eddie had put on his suit to make sure that it still fit and that it would be nice enough for the wedding, though he’d sprung for a new shirt and tie. And if his shirt and tie were specifically picked to complement Buck then no one needed to comment on it, thank you very much, Carla.
“Well look at you,” Carla said with a laugh. “Very handsome.” Carla came over and helped settle his collar a little better and to pick imaginary lint off of his jacket.
“You look good, Daddy,” Christopher said and beamed at Eddie for a moment. Eddie grinned back just as brightly.
“Should get it off and packed up then,” Eddie said and fiddled with the buttons at his cuffs.
“Oh no, not yet. Buckaroo made me promise to get pictures,” Carla said and pulled out her phone.
“He doesn’t trust me to dress myself?” Eddie asked and tucked his hands into his pockets awkwardly as Carla got her phone ready to take some pictures.
“I’m pretty sure he just wants to make sure you two match,” Carla said and lifted her phone before frowning at him. “Oh come on, Eddie. Strut a little. You know you look good.” It pulled a laugh from Eddie and Carla snapped a picture while he laughed. “That one’s a keeper.” Eddie pushed a hand through his hair and sent Carla a flat look when she snapped a picture then too. She snapped another of his unimpressed face before Eddie shook his head and held up his hand.
“Alright, alright. That’s enough. I don’t need a paparazzi moment,” Eddie laughed and rocked on his feet before nodding over his shoulder. “I’m going to get out of this. Eddie leaned down and pressed a kiss to the top of Christopher’s head. “Do I pass, Superman?”
“Yeah. Buck’s going to think you look really handsome, Daddy.” Christopher said it so innocently, but it made Eddie blush a little to think of Buck looking at the pictures of him in a suit and thinking Eddie was handsome. Eddie nodded and he went back into this room to change into one of his old Army t-shirts and a well-worn pair of jeans.
…..
Buck was trying to piece together a suit that didn’t make him cringe when his phone chimed with a message from Carla. He thumbed open the messages and he felt his eyes get wide as he looked at the pictures of Eddie in a suit. He bit his lip and smiled a little as he looked at Eddie’s bright laughter, expertly captured by Carla’s photography skills. Eddie looked really nice in his suit but in this picture, he looked relaxed and happy. The second picture though, that was… well. Buck bit his lip harder but not for the purposes of stepping on his growing smile. Eddie was handsome all the time, Buck had often found himself thinking about the various aspects of Eddie that were attractive, but this… this was next level. Eddie looked sexy.
Buck scrolled past the picture and couldn’t help but snort at the annoyed expression on Eddie’s face in the last one. After a moment, a message from Carla came through. Seems like your mans knows what he’s about and he’s not playing around. Everyone’s going to be very jealous of you, Buckaroo.
Buck’s face felt hot and he tapped his finger on the corner of his phone as he tried to think of a response. He couldn’t think of anything and he tried to busy himself with matching his shirt and tie to Eddie’s suit, and if he took more time than necessary to study the pictures of Eddie to do so- well there was no one around to call him out on it. His phone went off again and he picked it up to see a text from Eddie.
Eddie: Do I pass inspection?
Buck huffed a short laugh before tapping out his response.
Buck: I don’t think you need me to stroke your ego.
         You look great, Eddie
You certainly made my life easier by having a black suit that I can match mine to.
Eddie: Well, we wouldn’t want you to have a fashion melt-down 😉
Buck snorted and he definitely would have to thank whoever it was that finally taught Eddie to use emojis- it was probably Christopher or Hen if he had to hazard a guess.
Buck: Nope. No meltdown here.
Okay, maybe there was the beginnings of a meltdown, but that’s not the point.
Buck could almost hear the way that Eddie would be laughing at him on the other end of the phone. The little ellipses popped up one or twice and Buck frowned at it, but nothing came through. Buck tucked his phone into his pocket and finished up picking his suit and getting it packed up, trying not to overthink what Eddie had been trying to tell him.
…..
Eddie lifted Christopher onto his hip and pressed another kiss to his son’s cheek. “You’ve got to promise to be good for Hen and Karen, alright? It’s only a few days, but-”
“I’ve already promised three times,” Christopher said and pressed his hands against Eddie’s cheeks seriously. “You can go, Daddy. It’s going to be o-kay.” He patted Eddie’s face and Eddie could hear Buck stifling his laughter behind them.
“Alright, alright. You know that you can call me whenever you want,” Eddie said and settled Chris down, smoothing a hand through his son’s hair.
“Yes, now go!” Christopher said and gave Eddie a playful push towards Buck.
“If you need anything-” Eddie said, looking at where Hen was watching the whole display with a grin.
“I will call Carla or Isabel,” Hen said with a firm look. “Like you said, it’s only a few days. We’ve got this, Eddie. You and Buck have some fun.” The way she said it made Eddie’s neck burn and he gave her a short nod before turning to look at Buck.
“Ready?” Eddie asked and shouldered his carry-on bag. He and Buck had decided to just put their suits and couple of sets of clothes into one checked bag. To save money. Of course.
“Are you?” Buck asked teasingly and Eddie rolled his eyes before shoving him and grabbing their checked bag. They made their way over to where they could drop off their bag and Eddie couldn’t help but keep looking over his shoulder to where Hen and Christopher were waiting, Christopher waving at him. Eddie waved back as Buck handed their bag off.
“Honeymooning?” The woman asked conversationally as she tapped at the computer and printed out a label for their bag. She glanced up at them as she fixed it to their bag.
“Uh, not quite. Friend’s wedding,” Buck said and glanced at Eddie out of the corner of his eye.
“Well, if it makes you feel any better, your son seems to be in good hands. The first trip without them is always the worse.” Eddie blushed and he fumbled for a second, not sure if she should correct her assumption that Eddie and Buck were together.
“Thank you,” Buck said easily, and she nodded before she put their bag on the conveyer belt.
“You’re all set. Have a nice flight.”
Both of then nodded and they went through security in relative silence, not that it was particularly easy to talk to each other while you were going through security, but when they were on the other side, Eddie gave Buck an apologetic grimace. “Sorry about that- back there,” Eddie said and pointed over his shoulder.
“No big deal, Eddie. Not like it’s the first time,” Buck shrugged and tucked his hands into his pockets. Eddie felt a sharp spike in his heartbeat.
           “What?”
“People have assumed that Christopher was our son before. It’s not a big deal. He’s a sweet kid and-” Buck was about to go on one of his incredibly heart-warming rambles about how great Christopher was, but Eddie cut him off.
“Like when?” Eddie asked as they started to make their way towards their gate.
“Remember when we took Chris to see Santa. That first time.” When Eddie nodded, Buck continued. “Well, one of the elves thought Chris was our son. Told me that we had an adorable son.”
“What did you say to that?” Eddie asked, his heart hammering against his chest. He wasn’t sure what he wanted Buck to have said.
“I said thank you,” Buck shrugged casually. He glanced over at Eddie and winced at whatever he saw in Eddie’s face. “Should I not have?”
“It’s not a big deal, I just… I never thought about how it looked to have you with me when I took him. That’s all,” Eddie said and bumped their shoulders together. Buck quirked a small smile and leaned in so that their shoulders were pressed together the whole time they were walking.
They sat outside their gate for a while, just talking about nothing mostly, before they were able to board. Buck seemed to get a little tense as they walked up, had their tickets checked, and then started to get onto the plane. Eddie watched the tension in Buck’s shoulders and he reached out and rubbed Buck’s back softly as they made their way to their seats.
“You okay?” Eddie asked and covered Buck’s hand where Buck was gripping the arm rests of his seat.
“Yeah, I just- when I first started working at the 118, I worked a crash,” Buck whispered so that only Eddie would be able to hear him. “I just remembered it and-”
“Hey,” Eddie said soothingly and he slipped his hand between Buck’s and the arm rest so that Buck was holding onto him. “It’s gonna be okay. It’s only about an hour and a half.” Buck nodded and he just held onto Eddie’s hand as everyone else boarded the flight. “I’ve got a book in my bag if you want to try and distract yourself.”
“Yeah?” Buck asked, almost like he was worried that Eddie was going to shut him down.
“Yeah. It’s probably right up your alley too. It’s about space,” Eddie teased. Buck and Christopher both had such a fascination with space and Eddie had watched the two of them fall into documentary and research holes more than once. Buck rolled his eyes but when Eddie held it out to him, he took it and opened it to the first page eagerly. Eddie watched him fondly for a minute before he settled, his hand still folded in Buck’s as Buck balanced the book open with one hand and one of his knees.
When the plane started to move to take off, Buck’s eyes squeezed shut and Eddie gently tugged at Buck’s hand to get Buck to look at him. “So what do you think Christopher is going to get up to with Hen, Karen, and Denny while we’re gone?” Eddie asked to keep Buck’s mind off the feeling of them taking off.
“Probably con Hen into way too much sugar,” Buck said and he laughed, even though it sounded a little strained. “Though I wonder how well he’s going to get along with having a toddler in the house. It’s always just been you and him, or him and his friends.”
“Hen said that Nia’s sleeping through the night most of the time, so I’m sure it’ll be fine. If anything, Chris’ll probably be excited to not be the youngest.” Harry was a few years older than Chris, and Denny was the same age- though as he like to proudly declare he was actually a few months older than Christopher- so Nia might be his chance to play big brother for a bit.” Eddie gave Buck’s hand a squeeze as they evened out. Buck let out a short breath and Eddie stroked a thumb over his knuckles. “Good?”
“Yeah, thanks.” Buck said and he gave Eddie a soft smile before he went back to the book in his lap, though he never let go of Eddie’s hand and would every so often trace little patterns against Eddie’s wrist. Eddie just smiled to himself and tipped his head to look out the small window.
…..
Buck shot a grin over his shoulder to Eddie as he unlocked their hotel room and stepped inside. Though he froze when he took in the room. He was sure that he’d booked a room with two beds, but right in the middle of the room was one large bed and Buck felt his mouth go dry.
Eddie didn’t seem fazed as he moved to set his carry on down and opened up their bag. “We should hang up our suits to make sure they don’t get too wrinkled before the wedding tomorrow,” Eddie said and bumped Buck’s hip as he moved past him with his suit folded over his arm.
“There’s only one bed,” Buck blurted out and turned to look at Eddie with a frown. Eddie froze from where he was hanging his clothes up and turned to look at Buck. Before Eddie could say anything, Buck was shuffling over to the phone. “I’ll call and have them bring a folding bed. You can sleep in the bed and I’ll just-”
“Buck, it’s fine. It’s not like there isn’t plenty of room. We can put the extra pillows between us if you’re that worried about us touching.” Buck looked up at Eddie and both saw and heard the bitterness in Eddie’s tone.
“Why would I care if we touched?” Buck asked with a frown. Anytime they were stood or sat next to each other they were plastered to each other’s sides from shoulder to thigh.
“Why would I?” Eddie challenged and raised a pointed eyebrow. “It’s not like we’ve never been in close quarters before, Buck.” It was one thing to be in separate but close together bunk in the bunk room and another thing entirely to be in the same bed, but Buck wasn’t going to argue.
Buck nodded and tucked his hands into his pockets. “Okay then,” Buck said, aiming for casual but his voice came out just a bit squeakier than he would have liked. He ducked his head at Eddie’s warm grin and moved to gather his suit so he could hang it up.
“I’m gonna text Chris so he knows we’ve landed,” Eddie said and he moved to sit down on the edge of his bed with his phone. Buck just nodded and finished up with his suit before he started tossing his other clothes- really just for the flight back home- into the dresser. He grabbed his bathroom bag and settled it on the counter in the bathroom before he stepped back out and sat next to Eddie on the bed. “Seems like he and Denny are living it up.” Eddie leaned in closer, his breath ghosting along Buck’s neck warmly, as he showed Buck a picture of the boys that Karen had texted him. Both of them were in a blanket fort with little bowls of popcorn and candy as they watched Coco.
“Hen and Karen are going to have quite the time trying to get Christopher to sleep after that,” Buck laughed and his chest ached a little. Looking at the picture made him miss Christopher a little bit more than he’d have thought. “I have made that mistake one too many times.”
“You learn to roll with it,” Eddie said and bumped Buck’s shoulder. “What do you say we take a walk? Just kind of explore, find some place to get something to eat, and then we can turn in early. I’m sure you’re gonna want to take your time tomorrow and make yourself all pretty.” Eddie was teasing him but Buck blushed a little. He knew that Eddie wasn’t calling him pretty, but it was close enough.
“Sounds good to me,” Buck said and Eddie nodded before he stood up and nodded towards the door. Buck followed after him with something warm settling in his chest as they fell into step beside each other.
…..
Getting to sleep the night before the wedding hadn’t been as difficult as Buck would have thought. He and Eddie had felt that initial awkwardness of trying to settle into bed with someone you’d never slept beside before, but once they’d figured it out- it was easy to fall asleep.
Buck woke up slowly to the familiar soft sound of his alarm and he grumbled his displeasure as he reached over to turn it off. He pressed his face further into his pillow but then he frowned when he heard a soft huff of breath right by his ear.
“Comfortable?” Eddie’s voice, a little rough and thick from sleep, said from right by his ear. Buck blearily lifted his head and found himself nose to nose with Eddie. He’d been pressing his face into Eddie’s shoulder and now that he was more aware, he could feel how he’d plastered himself to Eddie’s side.
“Shuddup,” Buck mumbled and he let his head fall back onto Eddie’s shoulder. Eddie huffed another small laugh and he combed his fingers through Buck’s hair for a moment before he nudged the side of Buck’s head.
“Come on,” Eddie said and slipped his hand down from Buck’s hair to squeeze the back of his neck. “Up.”
Buck huffed against Eddie’s neck before he rolled away and pushed himself out of bed. “How are you so awake?” Buck muttered and he scrubbed a hand down his face.
“I have a kid who is determined to be up right around the time the sun comes up. And of course, former Army.” Eddie’s smile was soft and almost liquid around the edges. Buck felt something warm pool in his stomach and he grinned as he pushed his hair away from his face. “Don’t use up all the hot water, I’ve got to shower too,” Eddie said and stretched to poke Buck’s thigh with his foot.
Buck caught his ankle and gave it a squeeze before he stood. “I won’t.” He let his touch linger a little before he padded over to the bathroom. He shut the door behind him and turned the water on to start getting warm while he brushed his teeth.
The hot water felt good but he didn’t let himself linger like he would if he were showering at home. They didn’t really have time for it, and Eddie did ask him to leave him some hot water. An unbidden image of Eddie in the shower flashed in Buck’s head and he sucked in shaky breath before shoving it away and turning the water off. He dried off his hair and dried himself off before knotting the towel around his waist and opening the door.
“All yours,” Buck murmured as he moved to open up the dresser and pull out a clean set of underwear. He had to focus on getting his clothes so that he didn’t look over at Eddie as Eddie made his way over to the shower.
Buck waited until the door was shut before he tossed his towel over the back of a chair and pulled his underwear on. He pulled his undershirt and slacks. He didn’t want to pull his shirt on yet because he knew that he should probably shave before they left.
The bathroom door opened and to show Eddie in his underwear and his undershirt as he rubbed a towel over his hair. “I’ve got to shave,” Buck said and pointed into the bathroom with a raised eyebrow.
“Just need to shave and brush my teeth,” Eddie said and Buck nodded as he stepped into the humidity of the bathroom.
“Not like we can’t share,” Buck said and his hip brushed against Eddie’s as he leaned over the sink to grab his bathroom bag. They both went about their routines silently and Buck couldn’t help but glance over at Eddie every so often in the mirror. He’d seen Eddie clean up after a shift, but this felt different. More intimate.
Eddie sent him a small smile in the mirror around his toothbrush before he spit into the sink and rinsed it off. Buck’s hand nearly slipped at the warm jolt of electricity it sent through him. They both finished up shaving and Eddie laughed softly before he tilted Buck’s face and wiped away a bit of shaving cream that was just behind the curve of his jaw where he couldn’t see it. “Wouldn’t want you walking in with that,” Eddie said and his thumb on Buck’s skin felt like getting too close to a live wire- that same prickling sensation breaking out along his skin. Eddie dropped his hand from Buck’s skin and combed his hair back from his face so that it sat flat. “You should leave your hair wavy,” Eddie said abruptly as he glanced at Buck in the mirror.
Buck pushed his hand through his still slightly damp hair. It wasn’t long enough to fall into his face, but it laid across his forehead in almost curls. “You think so?”
“Yeah,” Eddie said casually and Buck just nodded. Eddie touched the small of Buck’s back before stepping out and going to get dressed. Buck knew he should finish up, but he felt overwhelmed a little at how easily he and Eddie were falling into these roles. He swallowed thickly and reminded himself that Eddie was just doing this as a favor to a friend. He was being supportive because he was Buck’s friend and that’s what friends did.
Buck blew out a breath and went to finish getting dressed. He stood in front of the closet mirror and fixed his tie and made sure his collar wasn’t twisted up before he slid his jacket into place. He gave himself a short nod in the mirror before he glanced over to where Eddie was pulling his jacket on as well. He rolled his eyes a little as he noticed that Eddie’s collar wasn’t sitting right because of how his tie was adjusted. Buck just wordless turned Eddie around and tugged at his tie before leaning in so he could smooth his collar.
When he stepped back, his hands still on Eddie’s lapels, Eddie was blushing a little and Buck bit his lip. “Wouldn’t want you walking in like that,” Buck said, teasingly repeating Eddie’s words back to him. Eddie’s face broke out into a smile and he swatted at Buck’s hands playfully. “If you’re ready, we better get going,” Buck said as he glanced down at his watch.
“If you’re not ashamed to be seen with me in public, then I think we’re good,” Eddie joked and Buck shoved at his shoulder. Eddie wrapped his arm around Buck’s back and guided him towards the door where their shoes were lined up and ready for them to slip them on.
…..
Eddie settled his arm over the back of Buck’s chair as the ceremony started- Abby’s procession having already led her up to the altar with her brother on her arm. Buck had tensed a little when the wedding march had started and when he’d first caught sight of Abby- who Eddie had to begrudgingly admit look really pretty in her soft pink dress- but Eddie had just stroked his thumb over the back of Buck’s shoulder and he’d slowly relaxed. The ceremony was much shorter than Eddie had remembered his being, but then again he’d had the full Catholic ceremony as a way to appease his family’s traditionalists.
They started inside, the wedding having been held just outside the reception hall, but Eddie stepped away from Buck when his shoe came untied. He stepped out of the way so that he could crouch down and tighten the laces of his shoe before quickly knotting them and tugging to make sure it wasn’t going to fall out again. When he was satisfied, he found Buck in the small crowd and frowned as he noticed that Buck was talking to Abby and Sam at the entrance to the reception. His whole body was screaming how uncomfortable he was so Eddie politely made his way through the people towards Buck.
“I thought you were bringing a date? I didn’t see her with you,” Abby said and it shouldn’t have struck a nerve- at least not with Eddie- but it did. Eddie stepped up and wrapped an arm around Buck’s waist securely.
“Sorry, didn’t mean to leave you out to dry,” Eddie said and brushed a kiss against Buck’s cheek for good measure. He put on his most charming smile as he looked at the newly married couple. “Hey,” Eddie said brightly. “I’m sure that you don’t remember me, but I’m Eddie.” He held out his hand and both of them shook it. “It’s nice to get a proper introduction and under much better circumstances.” There was an almost brittleness to his tone that neither of the strangers picked up on, but Buck did as he turned to look at Eddie with a slightly shocked expression.
“You’re the firefighter from the crash,” Sam said as it clicked into place. His smile brightened marginally.
“One of many,” Eddie joked as he smoothed his thumb over the soft material of Buck’s jacket. “I’m glad to see you’re doing better.”
“I couldn’t do much worse,” Sam joked and Eddie laughed. It wasn’t Sam that he had anything against. The man had just happened to fall in love and who could really fault him for that?
“I didn’t know Buck…” Abby started but faltered as she glanced between the two of them in a way that made Eddie’s blood start to simmer.
“Buck was into men?” Eddie asked, his polite façade never faltering for a second as he shrugged casually in the wake of Abby’s obvious embarrassment. “Well, there’s a lot about Buck that will surprise you when you actually get to know him.” It was said with the right balance of pleasantness and pointedness that it could be seen as just giving Buck a compliment. He smiled at Buck fondly and Buck seemed to be in quiet awe as he smiled back at Eddie. Eddie looked back at them and gave them a short nod. “We shouldn’t monopolize your time. You’ve got other guests.” Eddie led Buck into the spacious room with a glowing feeling in his chest at the ringing silence that was left behind.
“You… Eddie,” Buck said in a hushed tone, the same soft expression on his face from earlier.
“I told you that I’d have your back, Buck,” Eddie said and he rubbed Buck’s back as they found an empty table and sat down. “I meant that.” Buck ducked his head and Eddie nudged at his foot carefully, not wanted to scuff either of their dress shoes.
Buck’s blue eyes were bright with something that Eddie couldn’t place before it was replaced with one of his huge, genuine smiles. “Thanks, Eddie.”
…..
The reception is winding down and Buck actually found himself having a good time. They talked a little with the other people at their table- who were absolutely enthralled that Buck and Eddie were both firefighters- but most of the people had gotten up and wandered to mingle with other guests or dance. Since Buck and Eddie only knew each other, it hadn’t been a problem for them to just relax in their own little bubble.
The song changed and shifted into something slow and sweet, an Ed Sheeran song if Buck was right, and Eddie knocked his shoulder against Buck’s. “I’ve been a terrible date, I haven’t even asked you to dance yet.” Eddie’s smile was soft and only had a slight note of teasing to it. Eddie slipped his hand into Buck’s and gave it a gentle tug. “Come on. I promise I won’t step on your toes.”
“Yeah,” Buck said and he followed Eddie out onto a corner of the dance floor. Eddie wrapped his arm around Buck’s waist and held onto his other hand.
“I only know how to lead,” Eddie said with a hint of an apology in his voice. Buck just shrugged a little and let Eddie lead him. The same sort of easy intimacy from the bathroom earlier settled over them and Buck let himself lean into it tentatively. Eddie’s cheek brushed against his own and Buck let out a soft breath at the slight rasp of Eddie’s stubble despite having shaved just this morning. Buck could practically hear Eddie thinking as they danced slowly to the acoustic guitar and Ed Sheeran- and it was Ed Sheeran now that Buck was listening closer- singing about home. “Let’s…” Eddie faltered and then he pulled back a little bit so that they could look at each other. “Let’s get out of here.”
Buck felt his breathing hitch in his chest as the suggestion in Eddie’s eyes. He was being purposefully vague so that Buck could just brush it off if he wanted to, but Buck didn’t want to. He was tired of this song and dance between them. If Eddie was ready and offering, then Buck wasn’t going to say now.
           “Yeah.”
“Yeah?” Eddie asked and his smile was blinding as he held Buck just that little bit tighter.
“Yeah,” Buck laughed and leaned in to bump their noses together. He wanted to kiss Eddie so badly, but he also didn’t want their first kiss to be in a room full of strangers. Eddie stepped away but he laced his fingers through Buck’s as he guided them towards the exit, not even bothering to tell the happy couple goodbye.
           It felt good.
But not as good as when they were finally back at their hotel room and Eddie crowded Buck back against the door and finally- fucking finally- kissed him.

Chapter 3
Eddie waits a few days before talking to Buck about his recovery. He doesn't want him to feel like he's being ganged up on, knowing that both Maddie and Bobby spoke to Buck about it the day of his shield ceremony.
Buck convinces Eddie to take him to the gym to lift some weights. He won't start proper physical therapy until after the cast comes off (after the next surgery) but he wants to keep up his upper body strength. Especially since he now needs it to get himself around on the crutches.
After the workout, Eddie takes them to their favorite diner for burgers and milkshakes.
"Trying to undo all my hard work," Buck teases as they slide into a booth, Buck sitting sideways so that he can prop up his cast.
"Trying to keep you from collapsing after expending so much energy," Eddie counters. "I can't carry you if you pass out."
"Oh, I bet you could if properly motivated," Buck teases, unconsciously licking his bottom lip.
Eddie bites back a groan at the image of Buck's legs wrapped around him as he carries him to his bed. Having Buck living with him during his recovery has been the best kind of torture. He knows that Buck flirts with everyone, but it's hard not to wish it was intentional.
He clears his throat and picks up a menu, needing something to do with his hands - and to avoid looking at Buck. "Perhaps."
Buck laughs as he glances over his own menu. They've eaten here enough that they both know what they're going to order, but at least this lets the waitress know they're ready to order when they set them back down.
After giving their order, Eddie decides that now is as good a time as any.
"The pre-op appointment with your surgeon is next week, right?" he asks, trying to keep his voice neutral.
Buck perks up. "Yeah, on Monday. If all goes well, the surgery will be on Wednesday. You got that day off, right?"
"I did," Eddie hesitantly says. "For your pre-op appointment, too." He shifts nervously. "I'd like to come to that appointment with you, if it's okay with you."
Buck frowns. "Yeah, sure. It'll be pretty boring for you, but you can come if you want. Maddie's gonna be there, too."
Eddie swallows. "I figured. Since we're the ones who will be taking care of you, it makes sense for us to hear what the doctor has to say in person."
"You don't trust me to tell you what he says?"
"No, it's not that at all. I just, we just, want to make sure that this surgery is really necessary."
Buck's face crumples. "You've been talking about me behind my back?"
Eddie reaches across the table to capture Buck's hand before he can fully withdraw into himself. "It's only because we care about you and are worried that you're pushing yourself too hard."
"I have to," Buck says with so much conviction in his voice that it scares Eddie. "I have to get back to work."
"Yes, but you don't need to put so much extra strain on your body to do so. You will recover and you will come back to work. No one doubts that. Except for you."
Eddie suddenly wishes they weren't at a booth so that he could sit next to Buck. He wants to grab the other man's face and force him to meet his eyes. But he can't get close enough to Buck right now. Not with his leg resting on the seat, effectively keeping Eddie at a distance.
"You're going to get used to me not being there," Buck says. "You'll get someone else from B or C shift to fill in on the team and you won't need me."
The food arrives then, but instead of starting to eat, Eddie slides out of the booth.
"Eddie, what are you doing?" Buck asks, laughing as Eddie stretches awkwardly with one foot on the ground and the other knee on the booth, his hip resting against the table as he leans towards Buck.
"I need you to understand when I tell you this," Eddie says, grasping Buck's face with his hands and forcing him to meet his eyes. "I will always need you. You are my partner. I will not trust anyone on or off the job as much as I trust you. I need you to slow down and do your recovery right because I need you back and I do not want you to risk injuring yourself more with unnecessary surgery that will keep you from watching my back for one minute longer than absolutely necessary."
"But don't you see, I can be back there, watching your back, that much faster with the surgery," Buck says.
"You don't know that," Eddie counters.
"I can't let them replace me," Buck whines. "I can't lose our team. I can't lose you."
"You're never going to lose me," Eddie says with such certainty that Buck's breath catches. "You are my partner, no matter what. At work and at home."
"You don't mean that," Buck says, unable to accept what he hopes Eddie is really saying. "Not the way I want you to." Not after Eddie just lost his wife.
Uncaring that they are in the middle of a busy diner, Eddie leans forward and kisses Buck. The kiss is short, but full of love.
"I mean it," Eddie promises. He brushes his lips against Buck's again quickly before withdrawing to his side of the booth.
Buck is left staring at him in awe as Eddie picks up his burger and takes a large bite.
Eddie licks a stray bit of ketchup from the corner of his mouth before saying, "You don't want that getting cold."
Buck blinks at him before looking down and is almost surprised to see the burger sitting in front of him. He silently picks it up and begins eating, suddenly ravenous. Although not just for the food on the table.
"We're not done talking about this," Buck mumbles around his food.
"No, we're not," Eddie agrees. "We'll see what the doctor has to say and you, Maddie, and I will discuss this together before any final decisions are made."
"If…If I have the surgery, does that mean you won't want to kiss me anymore?" Buck nervously asks.
Eddie sighs, not wanting to appear to be withholding affection in order to get Buck to do what he wants. "No, I always want to kiss you. That won't change because you do or do not have more surgery."
"Good, because I want more of that," Buck says, taking an obscenely long slurp of his milkshake through the straw. "And hopefully more than just kisses?"
"We can, um, talk to the doctor about that, too," Eddie says. "Without Maddie in the room."
Buck laughs. "Yeah, that would be my preference as well."
Eddie knows they have a lot more to discuss, especially with this new development in their relationship, but he also knows that he and Buck will get through all of it. Together.
The End
(for real this time)
